President’s Message

Greetings NAFA, As I write my first message to you as your NAFA President for 2021 - 2022, I am reflecting on our successful NAFA Annual Convention that was held in Clearwater, Florida. It was a great conference program with lots of insight for our attendees. It was well organized and well attended, with the appropriate safety protocols in place. I would like to thank our NAFA staff who executed the event seamlessly and it was so nice to see familiar and new faces together again. Networking is such an important value that our members always appreciate so thank you to everyone who attended. I’m proud of the work that our Committees, Board of Directors and Executive Officers have put into the association and there is great momentum being carried into 2022. Thank you to Nathan Wittman for his leadership as our 2020 - 2021 President. It has certainly been a challenging one for the history books, and he did a great job. Special thanks to our outgoing Executive Director, Michelle Czosek, CAE for her leadership and hard work over the last six years. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Executive Director, Emily Bardach, CAE. I look forward to working closely with Emily over the next year. At NAFA we have a lot to be grateful for as an association and as members. Our industry is in even greater demand than ever before as our customers and our industry further their understanding of the importance air filtration and indoor air quality to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne contaminants. Our association and our membership are healthy and are in a strong position to further our purpose of being the global resource for education, expertise, and best practices.

Through the last 18 months, our members have endured an incredible challenge in keeping their employees and customers safe. The ongoing pandemic and resulting supply chain crisis have made it incredibly difficult for our members to fulfill the needs of their customers. As we all continue to adapt to the ever-changing new normal, NAFA’s goals are to be there to support our members and support the broader air filtration community with more resources, and more guidance through best practices. Our board will be meeting at AHR Expo in Las Vegas to develop a new strategic plan that will continue to increase NAFA’s voice to educate and inform our members and our industry. I look forward to sharing this plan with our NAFA association at the 2022 Technical Seminar in Louisville, Kentucky, April 5 - 7, please put those dates in your calendar. 2021 Annual Convention drew any in person On November 2-4 in Clearwater Beach, Florida, 131 NAFA members and guests gathered for the 2021 NAFA Annual Convention to share networking and educational opportunities. Catching up in person and yes, sharing handshakes and hugs, was welcome since some have not been to a live NAFA event since the last time the annual convention was held in the fall of 2019 in Montreal. Along with the many opportunities to network and share with peers, there was an outstanding educational line up. We were lucky to welcome Bill Banfleth, PhD, PE, Professor, Architectural Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and Chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force, as our opening keynote presenter. Presenters also discussed employment issues faced during the pandemic, air quality monitoring and sensor technologies, the state of the nonwovens market, changes to the ASHRAE 170 standard in the ventilation of healthcare facilities, a panel discussion covered market trends in filtration during 2021 and attracting tomorrow’s talent with today’s leaders. The breaks, welcome reception, awards dinner and NAFA Foundation Golf Outing provided plenty of scheduled networking time. The peer-to-peer exchanges provided by in-person events can’t be beat! We look forward to welcoming everyone to the 2022 Technical Seminar in Louisville on April 2-4! ■

Bert Boulet accepts the 2021 Clean Air Award for the 10405 Jasper Building located in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Bert has been a building operator for 33 years and has spent the last ten at Canderel Property Management where he is now the Operations Manager. When approached by Aqua Air Systems, Bert did not hesitate for a moment to put his building to the test. Bert is a big believer of preventative maintenance and getting things done. He believes this award will help his tenants feel comfortable and safe as they slowly return to work. Congratulations to Bert and his team.
We want to thank and acknowledge Gino Antinozzi, the Maintenance and Operations Coordinator (Coordonnateur de l’Entretien et des Opérations) of the FrancoSud School Division in Alberta Canada, for the work he has done with BGE Indoor Air Quality Solutions, Ltd. to improve the indoor air quality for the schools in his school division. Gino and the FrancoSud School Division were recently presented with a number of 2021 NAFA Clean Air Awards for their work and dedication to providing clean air in their schools. At the ceremony that took place at the award-winning Ecole Beausoleil, Gino was quick to acknowledge that the FrancoSud School Division recognizes the importance of indoor air quality for its students, staff, and visitors and that being recognized for this work is great, but it's just one step towards achieving their indoor air quality goals.

Paul DaSilva, is the Senior Building Operator and is a 5th Class power Engineer with 12 years experience. Joel Mariano is the Building Operator and is also a 5th Class Engineer with seven years' experience. Both were excited about the award and will proudly display it for all their tenants to see. Ray Nowak CAFS from Tri State Filter Company, presented the 2021 Clean Air Award to Lynn Richardson, Corporate Facilities Property Manager for Meijer Corporate Headquarters, located in Grand Rapids Michigan. Lynn and her team have worked diligently to improve the air quality in all three of the corporate buildings located on this campus. Improvements include all new gaskets and seals on doors and second stage filters and they improved the MERV rating on the first and second stage filtration, conducted regular coil cleaning and close monitoring of all units. Their hard work has earned them this prestigious award.
Joe W. Fly Co., Inc. is happy to recognize our partners at Rio Grande Regional Hospital that were awarded the 2021 National Air Filtration Association Clean Air Award. This award highlights the facilities that go above and beyond the normal standards to ensure building occupants stay safe, healthy, and comfortable. Air filtration is something that for many years has been taken for granted and only happens “behind the scenes.” Now more than ever, air filtration has become a daily topic for everyone in the world and their proactivity will be appreciated by all individuals who enter their facilities. Rio Grande Regional Hospital staff worked hard for the award and were happy receive the recognition for their efforts.
On Thursday, October 7, The Filter Shop presented the University of Nebraska, with the 2021 National Air Filtration Association Clean Air Award for their utilization of best air filtration practices in Hamilton Hall at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Hamilton Hall is home to the University’s Department of Chemistry. Josh Brandl, CAFS of The Filter Shop, presented the award to members of UNL's Building Systems Maintenance Department, Ron Peters, Recommissioning Manager and Andrew Mook, Manager, Building Systems Maintenance.

Lorne Stewart, Territory Sales Manager with Camfil Canada Inc. (Camfil USA, Inc.), presented two Clean Air Awards to SFU's Ron Van Vliet. The SFU Student Union Building and Education Building won the awards in recognition of excellence in air filtration and creating a healthy work environment. “These awards recognize the work SFU is doing every day to keep our community safe,” says Bernard Chan, Energy Manager with SFU’s Facilities Services. “Ventilation, along with other factors, plays an important role in keeping our community healthy and safe.” Lorne, who worked on the two buildings and submitted the nominations on SFU’s behalf, says the university has upgraded its filters to MERV-13A, the same standard found within common air spaces of hospitals in the Lower Mainland. “We at Camfil believe breathing clean air should be a human right,” says Stewart. “With higher levels of filtration implemented – students, faculty and staff should be more productive, focused and have better overall health.”

SFU follows the health and safety standards, set by ASHRAE, the society that governs heating and ventilation equipment, and used by WorkSafeBC for workplace indoor quality. Adequate ventilation can help reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases that spread through droplets and aerosols. To make sure the university was prepared for the return to campus this fall, Facilities Services upgraded centralized HVAC system filters to MERV-13 and maximized the amount of outdoor air whenever possible. The team also flushes the air in buildings prior to occupancy daily and conducts an HVAC assessment of classrooms, labs and other high-occupancy areas. Stewart worked with Travis Vilac, Maintenance and Operations Manager for SFU Facilities Services, to submit maintenance and cleaning logs. “I look forward to continue supporting SFUs initiatives, and wish to nominate more SFU buildings in the future,” says Stewart, after presenting the awards to Facilities Services.
In prioritizing a safe return to campus, UTSA facilities followed recommendations from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for the safe reopening of buildings. “Proper filtration is essential under any conditions, but especially in today’s environment,” said Associate Vice President for Facilities, Paul Goodman. “We are committed to achieving and maintaining high indoor air quality in our buildings through filtration and other means. We are proud to be honored by the National Air Filtration Association.” After a thorough inspection of the university’s HVAC system, the Facilities Preventative Maintenance team partnered with Joe Fly Co., Inc. to improve indoor air quality. Significant HVAC system improvements included superior ventilation and filtration upgrades to a total of 56 large air handler units. The installation of MERV 13 filters will help trap and filter airborne particles and other contaminants, promoting a superior indoor environment. Additionally, another 65 other units received an evaporator coil cleaning and disinfection process. ■

NAFA announces 40 Clean Air Award recipients for 2021 The National Air Filtration Association has announced its recipients of the Clean Air Awards for 2021. The Clean Air Award is presented each year to the building owners and managers who take steps to significantly improve the quality of their indoor air by increasing the level or efficiency of their HVAC air filtration system in 10 specific categories. Candidates are nominated for the award by NAFA members, and must submit detailed and specific steps taken toward cleaning the indoor environment through “best air filtration practices” and system hygiene. Nominees are judged by the NAFA Clean Air Award Committee and each recipient receives a custom-designed award, a listing on the NAFA website and recognition for their efforts. Award-winning buildings must maintain IAQ diligence and submit inspection data each year in order to maintain the NAFA Clean Air Award. Aidan graduated from De La Salle Collegiate High School and is continuing studies at the University of Michigan State, where he has been accepted to an early admin program for the Supply Chain Management in the college of business. Aidan began work at the warehouse of Aero Filter, Inc. in Madison Heights, Michigan. Working with packaging and product turnover and seeing how a thirty thousand square foot warehouse and thirty employees could do so much, his interest in supply chain logistics grew and he is attending the best supply chain program at Michigan State. Aidan has pushed himself in both academics and athletics from an early age, making him a well-rounded individual. Noting that since the filter industry helped shape his career goals into what they are today, NAFA has played an influential role in his life.
Ryan is majoring in Computer Science at the University of Virginia. After years of volunteering and working with children to teach coding at Code Ninjas®, a business that teaches collegelevel computer coding to kids aged 6 to 14, Ryan realized he wanted to pursue a career in teaching this subject. Ryan was impressed with how quickly children learn (and enjoy learning) code, with many of them seeming to struggle in social situations and helping provide this safe environment is very rewarding. He credits his journey through the Eagle Scouts and his love for skateboarding for giving him the drive and tools to help guide his decision to be a mentor and ultimately being the change he wants to see in the world.
Her father’s “mini me,” Alison uses her inherited traits of confidence, sociable personality, and ability to command attention in her volunteer work allowing her to grow into her strengths. She recognizes her defining trait as her love for the people she meets Hoping to step into a larger role within her father’s company someday, Alison will attend Ohio University to study media arts, with a minor in business.

The Certified Air Filter Specialist (CAFS) program distinguishes those professionals who have demonstrated a thorough, up-to-date understanding of air filtration technology and high level of professionalism. In order to become certified, air filtration professionals must pass an extensive examination on the principles, methods and applications of air filtration. When purchasing products or services from a Certified Air Filter Specialist, customers are assured that their particular requirements and needs will be addressed by a knowledgeable professional. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT) Program was first introduced to NAFA members in January 1999 as an effort to add more credibility and professionalism to the air filtration industry. Since its introduction, nearly 300 air filter service technicians have taken the exam based on the NAFA Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems manual. Interest started growing to make this program available to a much wider audience than just the NAFA membership. NAFA members saw the NCT program as an opportunity to spread knowledge and professionalism to technicians they encountered in the workplace who might not otherwise be involved in NAFA. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT II) program is an accreditation provided for learning the correct and safe protocol for changing of Bag in/Bag out (BIBO) hazardous air filter housings. BIBO housings are becoming more commonplace at hospital and healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical facilities, and biopharma research operations. The need for properly trained personnel for this hazardous protocol has prompted the National Air Filtration Association to launch the NAFA Certified Technician Level II accreditation program. ■

Longer Lead Times and the Importance of Maintaining Your High-Efficiency Air Filter BACKGROUND
Due to the pandemic, facilities are prioritizing their indoor air filtration and as a result, demand for high-efficiency air filters has gone through the roof. This has led to long lead times for orders, production shortages, soaring costs and other issues. The solution to these problems lies in a relatively lowcost and necessary filtration product: the prefilter. PRODUCTION DELAYS AND SHORTAGES
Air filters with ratings of MERV 13 and higher can block microorganisms as small as the COVID-19 virus. As a result, demand for these high-efficiency air filters has increased by up to 10X (as reported by Fortune).
All this demand would be great for air filter manufacturers if they could keep up. But they can’t. Air filter companies are facing the same labor shortages seen by many manufacturers. Manpower issues slow down production, leading to lead times that can be months long. Other problems are related to transportation logistics, such as a lack of truck drivers, backlogged ports and even a shortage of shipping containers. These issues not only slow the delivery of the high-efficiency air filters but of raw materials coming into the factories. Some experts predict air filter shortages will not be ending soon. Says Talbot Gee, CEO of HARDI (a nonprofit association for HVACR wholesalers), “As long as demand stays strong, we’re going to have these shortages … Everyone is assuming this is going to take at least the full calendar year to work itself all the way out.” GETTING YOUR HIGH-EFFICIENCY AIR FILTERS TO LAST 3X LONGER
If you can’t get new air filters, what do you do? Easy—you make sure your high-efficiency air filters stay clean, so they last longer and without a dip in performance. After all, dirty filters need to be cleaned often or replaced due to dirty media blocking the airflow, or you risk sky-high energy bills and broken HVAC equipment (and with shortages on HVAC equipment in general, including replacement coils, equipment replacement is an entirely different and even worse challenge than air filter replacement!).
The best way to keep your final air filters working more efficiently is with good, reusable prefilters. They are also commonly referred to as air intake filters or cottonwood filters. You put them outside or inside your HVAC unit filter bank, where they act as a barrier for those more fragile and pleated highefficiency air filters, keeping larger debris out. By blocking larger contaminants, prefilters extend the life of your final air filters by up to 2-3X. Marisa Jimenez de Segovia, CAFS, NCT President, Air-Care de Mexico How did you get your start in the filter industry? My grandfather, husband and I started Air-Care as an air duct cleaning company in 1992 and we imported air filters from Air-Care Las Vegas. At that time, in Mexico, most of the air filter sizes were nonstandard, so having filters in stock was not an option for us. It was my grandfather’s idea to start manufacturing them in Mexico, due to the lead times and import processes for small quantities of air filters.
Marisa Jimenez de Segovia, CAFS, NCT, ASCS, CEICC is co-founder of Air-Care de Mexico. Of Mexican and Spanish nationality, Marisa as born in Monterrey, Mexico. She has been married to Gabriel for 32 years, and has three children and two grandchildren... for the moment. Marisa is an ASHRAE Fellow Member, Past President of NAFA, Past President of ASHRAE Monterrey Chapter, Past President of American Chamber of Mexico Monterrey Chapter and ASHRAE Voting member on the 52.2 & TC 2.4 committees.

What is the most challenging aspect running a filter company As with every other company: finding the right people to work with you. Definitely it is WHO you work with, so finding people with the right attitude, who are accountable for their actions and willing to always learn is the most challenging thing in running a business. Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it This is a difficult question as we have had different mentors through this journey. When we founded Air-Care de Mexico, we had zero experience. We were three founders: my grandfather who was a retired economist, my husband a financial consultant and myself, a 22 year old, just graduated psychologist, and first time mom with a five month old baby. Dick Papaleo from Air-Care Las Vegas and his team, at the time, Mary Dziak and Mike Stanovich, were our first mentors as they shared their knowledge and wisdom with us. They introduced us to the IAQ business and literally taught us how to manufacture our first filters. What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you. “Make sure everyone in Air-Care de Mexico knows the core values of the company.” Sometimes, a company’s values are numerous and make it hard to remember, other times they may be posted on websites or as wall decor. So the idea is to narrow down to three or four values and tattoo them on our hearts. Values reflect who we are and what we believe in. I strongly believe, that by living the core values, these will act as a guide. Therefore, our actions, roles and decisions should always be aligned to these values.
How do you motivate your employees? Celebrating small steps, giving positive feedback and recognition for a job well done. Offering opportunities to learn, grow and having flexible schedules. For example, 15 years ago, Air-Care de Mexico implemented remote/home office setups for certain employees. This was not something common in Mexico before the pandemic. Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals? I would invite everyone to join NAFA. After joining you need to get involved: make plans to attend NAFA meetings, join the committees and get certified. As with any other organization, the key to getting the most benefits is to participate in the activities. Two of the most valuable aspects of participating, is the informal benchmarking and networking that occurs while attending the meetings. The first time my grandfather visited the NAFA booth at an AHR, he bought the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration. Years later we joined the association, I sincerely regret not becoming a member earlier. How has your company benefited from NAFA membership. Our company has benefited in multiple ways, we have learned from the seminars and best practices. We have networked and made long lasting relationships with suppliers we know and trust through NAFA. We have received a lot of tips and support by NAFA members. But most importantly we have met bright colleagues and made true enduring friends. NAFA is like family and some of my NAFA friends are now my best friends. ■

I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome! I am eager to get started and learn about an industry that has seen so much growth and innovation over the last two years. Never in a million years did I think I would be telling my friends and family over the holidays about working in air filtration and their eyes lighting up, saying “AIR FILTRATION! What an amazing opportunity!” There is a lot to learn so I will thank you in advance for your patience and welcome all ideas and advice. A huge thank you to my dear friend and colleague Michelle Czosek (and of course Terry!) for helping me get up to speed. The impact you have made on NAFA will be felt for years to come. Thank you also to those who have reached out or welcomed my phones calls. It is clear that NAFA is a respected community of professionals who believe in their products and services, support the organization, and like to have a little fun while connecting with others. I am excited to jump in and support a thriving NAFA! I had the opportunity to meet many NAFA leaders and members at the Annual Convention in November. Florida did not disappoint with perfect weather and many opportunities to connect, learn, and share. Despite safety concerns, our members were ready to get together in person. We had 131 attendees representing 67 companies, from across 23 states and Canada. There was renewed energy and excitement about the future of the industry, and it was great to be a part of it.

Planning is now underway for the 2022 Technical Seminar, and I hope to see many of you in Louisville, Kentucky, April 5-7. The seminar will include three days of programming, a NAFA Foundation activity, and networking receptions as well as CAFS and NCT Testing. We are positioned to have a successful year under Roberta’s leadership and the support of the NAFA Board of Directors. We are eager to get working on a refreshed strategic plan and keep the momentum our industry has seen over the last 20 months. On the operational side of things, we will be focused on increasing our visibility and brand, making sure our governance practices support the work that we do and the growth that is ahead, and making sure we have an engaged membership through multiple touchpoints and opportunities to get involved. If you have ideas about how we can support you and your company or want to get more involved, please let me know. Our team looks forward to seeing many of you at the AHR Expo in Vegas next month.
