President’s Message

A look forward by Trey Fly, CAFS, NCT II

Dear Members, I hope you all had a great holiday season and are looking forward to an exciting 2019. It is such an honor to be President of NAFA - an organization that I am tied so closely to. As many of you may know, I am a third generation owner of a 53 year old Air Filtration company in Texas. I feel extremely blessed to be part of this family, this company, this organization and our industry as a whole. Life is good right now for those of us in this industry and it is really nice to have a Trade Association as strong as NAFA to help us along the way. I have an archive of NAFA memories spanning back to around 2003 when I first got started. My involvement with NAFA has morphed over time. The first time attending I was fresh out of school and really new to business in general. Then came several years of attending just to see a cool destination and hopefully learn something that may help in our business. After that, I started to actually get involved with committees and found that sometimes the best way to learn is through participation. Years later, I volunteered for the Board of Directors. Then I spent the past several years being an Officer and now I start my humble duty as President. Honestly though, every step was important in my development. I learned so much just by meeting people that are in NAFA and talking to them about their experiences. Through my NAFA journey, I had the opportunity and honor to work with many very successful business people with decades of experience. That is the hidden benefit of being a part of this group. Relationships forged in NAFA justify every dollar spent on dues. I have so much gratitude for each and every member, past and present. The only way to capitalize on this hidden benefit is to be involved, be active, and be present. I also need to take a moment to thank the NAFA staff. Over the past several years, Michelle, Terry and Amanda have been instrumental in bringing innovation to the association and helping us prepare for a bright future. I have enjoyed working with them and look forward to this upcoming year. I would like to give special thanks to Jay Reese for showing me the way to be an excellent President – I hope to make you proud as I follow in your footsteps.

Here are some of my personal goals as President: New Involvement (new members or past members stepping up that haven’t before), Excellent Conferences with the Best Speakers, and Having Fun. Also I really want to focus on young people getting involved. Since we have an aging membership and if we aren’t proactive in nurturing young people, we will not continue to thrive. I think this is of paramount importance to the future success and health of NAFA. So if you are new, young, or haven’t been involved, where do you start? Ask questions, volunteer, and participate. Join a committee, nominate yourself for the Board, and ask for advice. There are plenty of members that are more than willing to take you under their wing, or call me or Michelle and we will point you in the right direction. By getting involved, you are investing in your industry, your job, your community and ultimately your future. I also wanted to announce a new initiative that is currently being formed called the Strategic Planning Committee. This will be a rotating group of people that create and uphold “big picture” strategic goals for the organization. The Strategic Plan will focus on the top objectives for the betterment of the organization. We plan to have this Committee formed in December and will work off-line until Technical this spring in Dallas. There should be some big announcements at that time! I am very excited about being involved with this new Committee to guide NAFA into the future. There is a lot to be excited about for NAFA members. We are representing a crucial niche industry, in the best economy ever, while technology is changing the way we do business at a frantic pace. Exciting times are ahead with lots of opportunity to learn and grow. The future looks very promising. As you renew your NAFA membership this year, make plans to get involved so you can receive the benefit of being in this amazing group. Thank you all and I look forward to a great year ahead. See you in Dallas for networking, fun, and amazing presentations in the Lone Star State! Sincerely, Trey Fly NAFA President

Clouds of dust By Brandon E. Boor, Ph.D.A, B A. B.

Lyles School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University, 550 Stadium Mall Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47907 Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, Center for High Performance Buildings, Purdue University, 177 South Russell Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907

“You know what I am? I’m a dust magnet!” enthusiastically proclaimed Pig-Pen, a beloved character in the popular comic strip, Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. It is said that Schulz drew inspiration for the character from observing his own son’s propensity for being surrounded by dirt1. Indeed, if you take a magnifying glass to inspect the air around your body, you will find millions of tiny airborne particles floating about. While Schulz may not have been an aerosol scientist, his portrayal of Pig-Pen as being perpetually enveloped by a cloud of particles is quite accurate. Our activity patterns and movements indoors are responsible for creating personal clouds of dust. As we walk across the carpet or move in bed, we continually stir-up indoor dust – complex deposits of settled particles and their associated biological, chemical, and elemental material. This process, referred to as resuspension, is a major source of coarse-mode (> 1 µm) particles in our homes and offices, particularly particles of biological origin, such as bacteria, fungi, and allergens. The quality of indoor air can be significantly influenced by human-driven resuspension of settled dust. An adult walking across the floor can resuspend 10 to 100 million particles per minute2, while tossing and turning on a mattress can stir-up similar levels of microbialladen dust3. The episodic release of dust to air is an inherently transient process, changing minute by minute due to human occupancy and movement patterns. While we have insights into how adults kick-up particles indoors, we know comparatively less about how small infants resuspend dust. As toddlers crawl, play, learn to walk, and move during sleep we would expect them to generate their own personal dust clouds (Figure 1). Given the close proximity of their

4

Figure 1. Infant dust clouds.

breathing zones to flooring and bedding surfaces, they are likely to be exposed to elevated concentrations of resuspended particles in their near-surface microenvironments. Resuspension may contribute meaningfully to earlychildhood inhalation exposures to the microbial and allergenic content of indoor dust. Such exposures can play a significant role in both the development of, and protection against, asthma, hay fever, and allergies. Working with microbiologists and aerosol scientists in Finland, my research group recently published two of the first studies investigating dust clouds around crawling infants4, 5. To characterize the infant Pig-Pen effect, we developed a simplified mechanical crawling infant that bravely explored the particle plumes released from carpets. We used a laserinduced fluorescence (LIF)-based aerosol instrument to monitor biological particles in the infant dust clouds in real-time, along with off-line DNA-based analysis to probe specific bacterial and fungal taxa. We discovered that the crawling motion of an infant delivers a substantial number of resuspended particles to their

breathing zones (Figure 2), with concentrations ranging from 50 to 600 µg/ m3(number range of 0.5 to 2 cm-3). Infants create very concentrated clouds of dust around themselves, with breathing zone concentrations roughly ten times greater than those in the bulk air of the room. Crawling-induced resuspension is a highly transient process, as illustrated in the size distribution time-series plot of Figure 2. An abrupt burst of resuspended fluorescent biological aerosol particles in the infant breathing zone can be observed at the onset of crawling. The particle concentration then fluctuated with respect to time during the remainder of the resuspension period and decreased rapidly following the cessation of crawling. The accelerated decay in particle concentrations post-crawling suggests that an infant will receive much of their exposure to self-induced resuspended dust during periods where they are actively engaged in locomotion. We found most of the resuspended particles to be larger than 1 µm in diameter. The size distributions exhibited a prominent mode between 3 and 5 μm, while a partial second mode was observed

for particles greater than 10 µm. Given the results of our DNA-based analysis, we believe the 3 to 5 μm mode is likely comprised of bacterial cell agglomerates. For the particular carpet samples studied, the most abundant bacterial genera in resuspended dust included: Oxalobacteraceae gen., Acinetobacter, Paracoccus, Corynebacterium, Micrococcus, Propionibacterium, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium, and Sediminibacterium. The detailed size-resolved concentration data enabled us to predict how many resuspended biological particles deposit in the infant respiratory system per unit time crawling. In one minute of crawling across a carpet, on

5.

the order of 1,000 to 10,000 resuspended particles will deposit in the infant respiratory system. Infants will receive much of their inhaled dose in their lower airways – the tracheobronchial and pulmonary regions of their lungs. Much like Pig-Pen, babies are surrounded by clouds of dust they resuspend from indoor surfaces. As house dust is heavily enriched with an amazing diversity of microorganisms, much of the resuspended particles are of biological origin. Understanding sources of indoor particles, and their contributions to human exposure, is an important step in working towards indoor environments that promote human health and well-being. ■

How to prepare for the 2019 NAFA Annual Convention in Montreal, Canada September 10 - 12 Hotel Bonaventure Montreal 900 Rue de la Gauchetière O Montréal, Quebec Canada

It’s time to think about some preparations you’ll need to make. If you are traveling from the United States, you will need a passport for travel to both Canada and Mexico, and of course other countries. Don’t wait until the last second. You can get a passport in two weeks, but it cost you rush fees and some gray hairs worrying about it! Here’s how to get a passport. Ensure your current passport will still be current for your return trip! You may not be able to depart if your passport expires within a month or two of your journey. Renew it now if it does. 8

If you travel extensively consider getting CLEAR or TSA PreCheck which can streamline your trip through TSA and security checkpoints and the Global Entry which simplifies reentry to the United States through Customs. Brush up on your French. 59% of the city speaks both English and French, so when in Rome…er…Montreal… Do your best! Did you know that most of the City of Montreal is situated on an island? Go ahead, Google Map it. We’ll wait. There’s nothing you should do with this information. But it’s interesting!

Three email subject lines that will kill your chances of winning a new customer By Spencer X. Smith, AmpliPhi

How many times have you gotten an email with one of these three subject lines? “Checking In” “Touching Base” “Following Up” I’ve received dozens of emails like this and am guilty of sending a whole bunch of them too. Think about it: Aren’t these just euphemisms for, “Wanna buy my stuff?” “What else am I supposed to say?” you might be wondering. The last thing you want is to be forgotten by your prospect. When we send emails to prospects, wouldn’t it be worth their while if we told them something that is important to them? Important things to prospective customers include cost of ownership, drawbacks to buying what you’re selling, stories of people like them, etc. Since you interact with customers specific to your business all the time, wouldn’t it benefit your potential customers to hear about those experiences? If we adopt a mindset of sharing ideas instead of just selling things, then our potential customers will actually value the emails we’re sending. Can you see why they’d feel better about you – and more confident about the decision to do business with you – if you’re the one educating them? Instead of emailing someone to remind them you would like to sell them something, take advantage of the opportunity to provide targeted education by assigning that prospective client to a simple workflow based on their interests. These Digital Assets – which can be articles, blog posts, or other educational material you already have – will allow you to maintain time-of-mind awareness with your prospective clients by sending them relevant educational messages from

10

this asset repository on a regular basis. That’s when your role evolves from one who is pitching a product that helps you to offering a commodity to a valued partner that helps them. To get started, consider this: What questions are your prospective clients asking you every single day that you’re manually answering via email or phone calls? Distill these frequently asked questions into concise and actionable articles, blog posts or videos. Start writing articles on your website that teach your customers. Use these articles as links to your site in emails you send so you can educate your prospects. Once these customers are on your website, use remarketing/retargeting (i.e. those “creepy” Facebook ads that work so well) technology to show them advertisements or sponsored content on social media and throughout the web. By offering specific information assets geared at fixing specific problems, you can gauge your prospects’ interests immediately, and not be left guessing what issues they’re facing. Which asset do you create first? Don’t over think it – what question do you hear more than any other? Create that one first – now. Have you produced education-based material for follow-up purposes? Can you see this working in your business development activities? ■

More about NAFA Certification programs

The Certified Air Filter Specialist (CAFS) program distinguishes those professionals who have demonstrated a thorough, up-to-date understanding of air filtration technology and high level of professionalism. In order to become certified, air filtration professionals must pass an extensive examination on the principles, methods and applications of air filtration. When purchasing products or services from a Certified Air Filter Specialist, customers are assured that their particular requirements and needs will be addressed by a knowledgeable professional. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT) Program was first introduced to NAFA members in January 1999 as an effort to add more credibility and professionalism to the air filtration industry. Since its introduction, nearly 300 air filter service technicians have taken the exam based on the NAFA Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems manual. Interest started growing to make this program available to a much wider audience than just the NAFA membership. NAFA members saw the NCT program as an opportunity to spread knowledge and professionalism to technicians they encountered in the workplace who might not otherwise be involved in NAFA. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT II) program is an accreditation provided for learning the correct and safe protocol for changing of Bag in/Bag out (BIBO) hazardous air filter housings. BIBO housings are becoming more commonplace at hospital and healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical facilities, and biopharma research operations. The need for properly trained personnel for this hazardous protocol has prompted the National Air Filtration Association to launch the NAFA Certified Technician Level II accreditation program. â–

The ten laws of personal growth By Chris Jennings, Sales, Leadership, and Client Retention Coaching

As someone who coaches companies on how to increase revenue and profits, I am always paying close attention to high-performing CEOs and top-notch business executives. Myself and my team of coaches work with people whose companies are looking for meaningful ways to improve themselves, their company, and operate at the top of their game. Several years ago, I began to record the key attributes of top performing people with the hopes that if I could identify and document them, I could help others achieve similar success. People who are making considerable impacts within their companies and in their industries, all seemed to share a consistent group of ten attributes. I call these “The Ten Laws of Personal Growth” that if implemented will result in significant net positive results. The Ten Laws for Personal Growth: 1. Remain teachable – fight the urge to resist learning. It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts. Continually dive into learning from books, coaches, and everything around you. The most successful people are looking for learning moments that add up to a mountain of experience. 2. Get comfortable, feeling uncomfortable. It’s ok, it won’t kill you. It means you are getting stronger. Progress, not perfection. Growth doesn’t come from operating within your comfort zone. Growth happens with you have opened up to accepting change and pushing your limitations to achieve self-improvement. 3. Write and rewrite your personal goals and visions you want to create. Reaffirm everything you deserve, even if you don’t yet believe that you do. The most successful people have written personal goals, with a daily and weekly plan on how to achieve them, including pictures symbolizing their goals as a reminder of what results you’re working to achieve 4. Borrow from others that appear stronger. Act as if you are them. Try on their confidence for size until it is really who you are. You can choose

20

how your personal growth is built. Identifying attributes that when taken on help you be your best you. 5. Find a source of strength outside of yourself. Be it religion, nature, the gym, the piano; create a never ending well to draw from. Utilizing this law not only improves physical, mental, and spiritual wellness, but also creates an outlet for the daily stresses that we inevitably face. 6. Use the old tapes and head trash that lie within you as a reminder of what was and be strong and faithful as you set your new course and rewrite your beliefs. These reminders of how far you have come are mental wins that stack up to be the motivational building blocks of your personal growth. 7. Be grateful for every lesson that you receive. Disappointment is always followed by a return to greatness. Take the lesson with grace and humility. Appreciate how far you have come and look with eagerness to who you are becoming.

Knowledge of The Ten Laws for Personal Growth is just the first step. If some or all of these feel uncomfortable, you shouldn’t feel alone. The people who have fully implemented them are few and far between which is why they achieve what so many others do not. Leaving our comfort zones and incorporating the Ten Laws of Personal Growth into your life will undoubtedly be worth the investment of time and effort. Should you, another NAFA member, or maybe someone from another industry you are connected with be interested in a conversation with our team of experienced sales coaches feel free to call me or send an email at the contact info below. We have helped thousands of companies build consistent revenue generating systems and implement processes to efficiently achieve higher sales results from new and existing customers. I am looking forward to speaking at the 2019 NAFA Technical Seminar in Irving, Texas on April 2nd which will be a great opportunity for professionals in the air filtration industry to meet, build connections, and share best practices. See you there. ■

8. When your head tells you not to show up, not to try or not to commit or that you are already doing that; reframe, and ask yourself, how can I do this even better? What simple adjustments could elevate my game to even higher highs? Write these adjustments down and make them visible as a constant reminder on how your can improve. 9. Stay humble. There are many teachers all around; your coach, trainer, fellow student, boss, employee, prospect, children, parent and random encounters are all brought to you to teach you something. Your job is to discover the lesson. 10. Embrace sacrifice. Invest in yourself. Give yourself the time, you are worth the investment, even if it is hard to do, it all will bring you so much more. Open your mind to your future self. Let your dreams materialize, they always will, if you work for them.

NAFA Guidelines Many international HVAC/R organizations promulgate standards for the air filtration industry, and many of these standards become part of a national building code. For the most part, these codes dictate “minimum standards” that must be met to be in compliance with the code. NAFA publishes a series of air filtration best practice guidelines based on these codes, but that go further to recommend and incorporate the “highest level of air filtration standards” for specific applications. NAFA currently offers the following guidelines which are available on the our website: 

2018 NAFA membership and recognition awards The NAFA Distinguished Service Award is given to a NAFA member who, by their long-time consistent efforts helps promote NAFA through their participation in committees, contribution of articles to Air Media, writing or revising text for the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration and the Installation, Operations and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems texts, and generally doing work that promotes the air filter industry while being part of NAFA. The DSA is open and available to any member of NAFA while they are still active in the industry. Recipients of the DSA are recommended by another member and then voted upon by the executive officers of NAFA. The board has set the maximum number of DSA’s given in any year to two which always makes for tough decisions. This year, we are fortunate to have two winners:

Kevin Delahunt, CAFS, B.G.E. Service & Supply Ltd.

Kevin has dedicated a big part of his career to volunteering with NAFA. He served on the NAFA Board of Directors from 2013 – 2015 as the Southeast Regional Director. He is a very active participant in and Vice Chair of the Guidelines Committee and was voted in as the 2018 - 2020 Chair.

Ray Riopel, CAFS, B. C. Air Filter, Ltd.

Ray has served on the NAFA Board of Directors since 2013 and rolled off this year. In addition to his commitment as a member of the Board, Ray has been very involved in the Education & Training Committee as well as the Technical Committee. He consistently supports NAFA and is a familiar face at both Annual and Technical.

The NAFA Lifetime Achievement award honors Monroe Britt, Green Leaf Technologies, LLC

The Lifetime Achievement Award, instituted in 2008, recognizes individuals either in or outside the NAFA membership who have contributed to the overall knowledge of the art and science of air filtration. These people would have been involved in providing insight and research into the principles of air filtration, testing and validating performance, and promoting proper filtration to or through the industry. Monroe has spent untold amounts of his time and money doing filtration research and was one of the key driving forces pushing for improved repeatability and reproducibility in the original SSPC 52.2 Method of Testing. Monroe built the first PLA vapor test chamber here in the US and as we have come to expect, he shared test data as well as chamber design with the ASHRAE committee. Aside from ASHRAE he has served on the ISO committee and continues to serve to this day. Monroe is an active member and supporter of NAFA, serving on the Technical Committee and attending the Technical Seminar on a regular basis.

Annual Conference Chair, Nathan Wittman and committee members Michael Corbat, Jeff Gradek, Tom Justice, Paula Levasseur, Jim Rosenthal and Leslye Sandberg put together an excellent educational program!

30

Roberta MacGillivray and Ray Riopel recognized for their service on the NAFA Board of Directors.

The accomplishments of NAFA would not be possible without the individuals that volunteer their time to NAFA. Outgoing Guidelines Committee Chair, Roberta MacGillivray receives her service plaque.

Brian A. Morris, CAFS, Filtration Technology Systems receives his anniversary pin for 10 years of service to NAFA. 

Technology Corner Powered by Permatron Corporation

Open and Shut. The Importance of Air Intake Filters for Equipment Enclosures Out-of-sight, out-of-mind, and a potential nightmare. Equipment enclosures keep your switches and wires away from damage, and keep equipment running efficiently. But while they keep vital technology components functioning and out of harm’s way, enclosures are more than metal frames and doors. To be effective, they also need adequate temperature control and air filtration. Which means without quality air intake filters they can do more harm than good. In order to provide optimal protection, equipment enclosures need: Temperature control. Overheating can not only harm sensitive equipment but reduce their lifespan. An enclosed metal box is just that: an enclosed metal box. It’s important to harness the ambient air outside enclosures in order to efficiently maintain a constant temperature inside. Process heat has to be continuously dissipated from the enclosure with an adequate venting system.

Air Filtration. Just as important as the air temperature is the quality of that air. While vents and fans keep the enclosure from overheating, it also means dirt and other airborne debris is continually drawn inside the cabinet. The buildup of airborne dirt on interior filters and mechanical components will impact the equipment’s ability to work efficiently. The location of equipment enclosures and their air intake vents may also increase the chances of attracting dirt, especially in crowded and heavily populated work environments such as restaurants, laundries, loading docks, industrial processing areas or remote locations such as bitcoin mining server racks, cell towers and wind turbines. Also, as mentioned earlier, they are often out-of-sight and out-ofmind, and so might only be sporadically cleaned. The Sofidel Group faced both those problems.

A Solution for Sofidel The Sofidel Group is a world leader in tissue paper production. Located in the UK, they make toilet paper, kitchen paper and tissues. They use Rittal electrical control enclosures in their factories to house paper processing and conveying controls. As the paper rolls are formed and slit, they are processed onto cardboard tubes before being conveyed down the line into packaging. Each electrical cabinet has an intake fan and filter unit on the bottom and an exhaust vent on top.

But in their dusty paper environment, the fan filters clogged up quickly and it was difficult to tell when they were clogged. As a result, changing the interior filters was done infrequently and, as they were changed, loose paper fines were immediately sucked into the enclosure. Sofidel Group engineers tried all sorts of workarounds on their enclosures to keep the dust from clogging the interior filters. The most popular solution was using a pair of women’s tights and insulation tape over the vents. They were time consuming to slip on and, frankly, a little embarrassing.

The Advantage of Air Intake Filters The solution for Sofidel Group and their Rittal enclosures was using Permatron’s PreVent® prefilter. These air intake filters go on the outside of enclosures, over openings, for easy access and removal. They keep out the larger contaminants, greatly reducing the need to change interior filters. PreVent prefilters are a snap to install, too. Literally. They are held on by strong magnets, powerful enough to stay in place but easy enough to remove and clean. Because dust accumulation is obvious to the eye, the air intake filters are cleaned quickly and reused indefinitely, even by unskilled labor. PreVent prefilters are used around the world. These high flow air intake filters are made with electrostatic media— dirt, dust and environmental contaminants cling to it like iron filings to a magnet. They are sturdy–encased in rigid steel frames–available in custom thicknesses to accommodate applications that can’t be flush mounted to the cabinet because of raised inlet louvers.

Well-maintained equipment costs less to operate, ensures optimal life expectancy, minimizes breakdowns and downtime, and maintains energy efficiencies. That’s exactly what an equipment enclosure, with proper air intake filters help ensure. And in the case of Rittal and the Sofidel Group, just because their enclosure filters are out-of-sight and out-ofmind no longer means they have to be out-of-pocket with overheated equipment, and high maintenance costs.

NAFA announces 32 Clean Air Award recipients for 2018 The National Air Filtration Association has announced its recipients of the Clean Air Awards for 2018.* The Clean Air Award is presented each year to the building owners and managers who take steps to significantly improve the quality of their indoor air by increasing the level or efficiency of their HVAC air filtration system in 10 specific categories. Candidates are nominated for the award by both NAFA members and members of the facility management community, and must submit detailed and specific steps taken toward cleaning the indoor environment through “best air filtration practices” and system hygiene. A NAFA Certified Air Filter Specialist confirms these improvements. Nominees are judged by the NAFA Clean Air Award Committee and each recipient receives a custom-designed award, building signage and recognition for their efforts. Award-winning buildings must maintain IAQ diligence and submit inspection data each year in order to maintain the NAFA Clean Air Award. 2018 facilities that utilize best air filtration practices in their buildings:

Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it? When I began my career in the air filtration industry, I had a substantial amount to learn about various products as well as the HVAC industry. Our sister plant in Ohio staff supported my learning curve during this time. Mr. Chuck Watts which is now our V.P. of Manufacturing and Mr. Ray Reisiger which at that time was our Sales Manager for the East Coast, helped guide me through the various aspects of filtration principles, supply chains, competitors and the many other aspects of the industry. What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you? At an early age, I learned that honesty, loyalty and appreciation for the opportunities in life was important in being successful. Those early lessons still support my personal life and my professional career. What is the most challenging aspect n the running your company? As the air filtration market continues to grow, there are increased challenges for competitive but yet reliable transportation of goods from the supply chain side to the finished goods side throughout the industry. The strong and growing economy has put increased pressure on many freight companies in securing enough available equipment and quality drivers on a daily basis.

Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals? I believe the up and coming filter professionals will have a bright future in the growing air filtration industry. Staying active and participating in industry organizations like NAFA can be invaluable to their knowledge and success. NAFA offers educational benefits as well as networking opportunities with other companies in different regions of the U.S. How has your company benefited from NAFA membership? Over the many years of our membership, NAFA has provided Glasfloss numerous opportunities to network with customers, suppliers and other manufacturers of air filtration products around the Continent. NAFA has also helped us and other members with educational benefits at the Technical and National Meetings each year. ■

From the Executive Director by Michelle Czosek, CAE

I’m sharing my top 5 personal thoughtproducers from this presentation in hopes that you’ll find something that strikes a chord with you and really gets you thinking. 1.

Do it about right now, instead of just right later.

2.

It’s not the big lumbering organization’s that are your biggest competitors – it’s the ones that are nimble and innovative. So, be nimble and innovative. For a good illustration of this concept, Google “Running of the Squirrels” and view the EDS video.

3.

Get clear about where you are going.

4.

Courage is an underrated leadership characteristic. To be a good leader, you have to have the courage to make a decision and stick with it.

5.

If you grow as a person, you’ll grow as a leader.

Look Beyond the “Usual Suspects” to Draw Inspiration NAFA’s Annual Convention in Lake Tahoe included the opportunity to see an outstanding presenter, Dan Barnett of The Primavera Company. Dan has a wealth of experience leading some very large corporations such as Nestlé, Pillsbury, Weyerhaeuser, and Constellation Brands. During his presentation, Make or Break Execution – The Core of Success, I was jotting down a tremendous amount of notes. I started out with good old pen and paper and quickly had to switch to my laptop to keep up.

I’ve seen a lot of presenters since beginning my first association position in 1990. I walk away from the really good ones feeling inspired for days. I think about everything they said and how I can apply those things in my daily work and personal life.

My favorite is “Do it about right now, instead of just right later”. That one hit home with me because oftentimes we want things to be perfect. We’re afraid of an idea we have failing, and worry about how it will reflect on our organization, as well as on us personally. Sometimes, we’re so paralyzed by that fear that we end up doing nothing. In reality, we learn more lessons when we fail than when

we succeed. We become stronger and more resilient. And, we learn more about the courage it takes to make a decision and stand by it, even if the result wasn’t exactly what we expected. Dan’s presentation was also a good reminder that we have many places to seek inspiration outside of similar organizations. We can and should adapt any size corporations’ successful ideas to fit our own needs. Often, when we hear about things that other organizations are doing that are not of similar size and budget scope, we discount what we can learn from it or how we can apply it in our own world. We see perceived barriers because of financial constraints, staff size or being unable to envision how such a big idea can play itself out in our small or large (in comparison) organization. We shouldn’t be so quick to discount though. Upon closer examination, I’m certain with some creativity you can find ways to work around perceived issues. I hope that when you attend the 2019 Technical Seminar, you’ll learn from the presenters and your peers from all of the organizations in the room, no matter their size or type. We have plenty to learn from each other. I look forward to seeing you at the AHR Expo in Atlanta! Best, Michelle Czosek, CAE
