MESSAGE Kia ora and welcome all to Old Timer’s Day 2nd May 2026. A special welcome and thanks to Colin Reive who travels down from Auckland each year. We continue to have this important day in our club calendar to pay tribute to, and bring together, those who have been a part of this club and helped make it what it is today – a community club bringing everyone together in the name of Naenae Football Club. This is our 78th year of operation and that is something to be proud of! We hope you all enjoy watching the games, sharing some stories, eating some kai, having a drink and laughing lots. REMEMBERING
DAVID CROSS Naenae FC mourns the passing of a true club legend, David Cross, who left us on Friday, April 17th, after a long and courageous battle. Known to everyone simply as “Newsy,” he was far more than just a man on the side line, he was the heartbeat and the soul of the infamous Nighthawks. As an original member of that legendary crew, Newsy set the tone for what it meant to be part of a social football team. Indeed, many of those who have walked through our clubrooms wouldn’t be here without Newsy’s persuasive Nighthawk recruitment. He had a gift for making you feel like you’d found your second home before you’d even laced up a boot. Many of us will remember him at club events with a cold drink in hand, always sporting his signature white Nighthawks tee and, of course, those from the team will never forget the pre-match ritual that was pure Newsy - the long stare at his car boot while he decided which pair of football boots he was going to wear pitch side. More than the boots or banter, he was a great mate. A leader of the pack who made sure everyone was included and that the laughter lasted longer than the game. Our thoughts are with his family and his extended Nighthawks brothers during this time. Rest easy, Newsy. The laces are undone and the boots are hung up.
