In today’s rapidly evolving elevator and accessibility industry, contractor companies must balance safety, compliance, and technical excellence while remaining competitive. One of the most effective ways to demonstrate professionalism and commitment to quality is through industry-recognized certification. The National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) offers three respected certifications designed to support workforce development and elevate industry standards: CAT, CET, and QEI. Each certification serves a unique role within the industry and provides tangible benefits to both employees and the companies that support them.

CAT – CERTIFIED ACCESSIBILITY TECHNICIAN

The Certified Accessibility Technician (CAT) certification is designed specifically for professionals working with accessibility equipment such as stairway lifts, vertical platform lifts, and residential elevators. As demand for accessibility solutions continues to grow with an aging population and increased focus on inclusive design, contractors who employ CAT-certified technicians demonstrate their commitment to proper installation, maintenance, and safety practices for these specialized systems.

For contractor companies, supporting CAT certification helps ensure technicians possess verified knowledge of accessibility equipment, applicable codes, and industry best practices. This not only improves service quality but also builds trust with customers, inspectors, and regulatory authorities. Companies that invest in CAT certification position themselves as knowledgeable leaders in the accessibility market while reducing risk and improving consistency across their workforce.

Another significant benefit for technicians and contractors operating in New York is regulatory recognition. The State of New York accepts the annual renewal of the CAT certification as proof of continuing education for individuals who also hold a New York elevator mechanic license. This means that when a technician maintains their CAT certification through NAEC, the renewed badge can be submitted to support the renewal of their New York state license—simplifying the compliance process while reinforcing professional development. For a list of the other states that recognize CAT certification for license renewal, reach out to the Certification Team.

CET – CERTIFIED ELEVATOR TECHNICIAN

The Certified Elevator Technician (CET) certification recognizes experienced elevator professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competency in elevator installation, maintenance, and service. The CET credential verifies that a technician has met rigorous standards of technical knowledge and industry experience.

For contractors, employing CET-certified technicians provides a competitive advantage. The certification signals to clients, building owners, and regulators that your team meets nationally recognized standards. CET-certified employees often bring increased efficiency, stronger troubleshooting skills, and a deeper understanding of safety and code requirements—resulting in improved job performance and reduced operational risk. Similar to the CAT credential, the State of New York recognizes the annual renewal of the CET certification as acceptable documentation for continuing education when renewing a New York elevator mechanic license. Contractors with technicians who maintain their CET certification can use the renewal verification from NAEC as supporting documentation during the state licensing renewal process, helping streamline compliance while ensuring technicians remain current with industry standards. For a list of the other states that recognize CET certification for license renewal, reach out to the Certification Team.

QEI – QUALIFIED ELEVATOR INSPECTOR

The Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification is the industry’s premier credential for elevator inspectors. QEI-certified professionals are recognized for their extensive knowledge of elevator codes, inspection procedures, and safety requirements. Many jurisdictions require QEI certification for inspectors performing code-mandated elevator inspections, making it an essential credential in the regulatory landscape.

For contractor companies, having QEI-certified personnel on staff can be a significant asset. It ensures your organization has in-depth expertise in inspection standards, code compliance, and system safety. This knowledge can improve internal quality control, assist with complex compliance requirements, and strengthen relationships with regulators and building owners. Supporting QEI certification also demonstrates your company’s commitment to the highest levels of safety and professionalism within the industry.

NAEC certifications are more than individual credentials— they represent a commitment to professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement. Contractor companies that support CAT, CET, and QEI certifications are investing in a more skilled workforce, building credibility with customers and regulators, and contributing to a stronger, safer industry overall.

Whether your focus is accessibility equipment, elevator service, or inspection expertise, NAEC certifications provide a pathway to elevate both your employees and your organization.

NAEC Advances its Commitment to Safety & Education

NAEC continues to strengthen its commitment to safety and education with the launch of the new Work Manual. The manual was officially debuted by the Education and Safety Committee during the 2026 Spring Conference in Long Beach.

Designed specifically for field mechanics, the Safe Work Manual expands on the industry’s 9 Safety Absolutes focus on Fall Protection, Lockout/Tagout, Electrical and Mechanical Stored Energy, and Material Handling.

Included in the manual, several supplemental safety resources are now available, including the Confined Space Declassification Form, JHA/JSA Pre Task Plan, and Safety Bag Contents checklist. These materials are accessible digitally on the NAEC website, and members are encouraged to print and share these resources with their teams for inclusion in their safety bags.
