In 2016, the Apple Hotel Torgglerhof was complemented with a small sauna building. The concept of the hotel to create a green oasis in the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol, follows the cycle of an apple during the course of the year: flowering, harvesting, grafting and resting period. In this context, the apple sauna is representing the resting period. The Finnish outdoor sauna has been integrated into the farm landscape as an independent and exposed building and can only be accessed through the outdoor area of the wellness premises. Just as the visitors should be able to immerse themselves into recreation without efforts, the sauna blends seamlessly into the surrounding nature with its conception and materiality. From the outside, it appears to be a small hill amidst the numerous apple trees, in the middle of otherwise untouched nature. The hilly character results from the building’s curved semicircle, which extends vertically over two stories, but also from the roof greening, incorporating the intense green of the omnipresent apple trees. Due to its location at the edge of the 10,000 m² property, the arising slope allows the sauna guests to overlook the apple orchard panorama. On two floors, the 50 m² spa offers a variety of regeneration options. The sauna with changing rooms and a shower are located upstairs, whereas a large relaxation room with ample views of nature is set on the ground floor. Here, large glass windows allow natural lighting of the interiors on a functional level and nature to flow into the spaces on a sensual level. This idea of incorporating the surrounding charm into the interiors is pursued by the choice of natural materials for the interiors such as wooden sauna benches and a concrete ceiling in earthy colors. On the walls, the lines of the concrete formwork correspond with the wooden slats of the benches and thus assimilate the rounded shape of the room. Concrete luminaires round off the recreational atmosphere with subdued light.

Im Jahr 2016 wurde das Apfelhotel Torgglerhof um eine Sauna ergänzt. Die Konzeption des Hotels folgt leitmotivisch dem Zyklus eines Apfels im Jahresverlauf: Blüte, Ernte, Veredelung und Ruheperiode. In diesem Kontext bildet die Apfelsauna inmitten der grünen Oase des Passeiertals in Südtirol die Ruheperiode ab. Die finnische Außensauna wurde als eigenständiges und exponiertes Gebäude in die Farmlandschaft eingebunden und kann nur über den Außenbereich des Wellnessbereichs erreicht werden. So wie die BesucherInnen in die Erholung eintauchen sollen, fügt sich die Sauna in ihrer Konzeption und Materialität nahtlos in die sie umgreifende Natur ein. Von außen erscheint sie wie ein kleiner Hügel inmitten der zahlreichen Apfelbäume in ansonsten unberührter Natur. Dieser hügelige Charakter resultiert zum einen aus dem geschwungenen Halbrund des Gebäudes, das sich vertikal über zwei Geschosse erstreckt, und zum anderen aus der äußeren Begrünung, die das kräftige Grün der omnipräsenten Apfelbäume aufnimmt. Durch die Randlage auf dem über 10.000 m2 großen Grundstück entsteht ein Gefälle, dass die BesucherInnen der Sauna über die Apfelwiese hinwegblicken lässt. Auf zwei Etagen hält das 50 m2 große Spa vielfältige Regenerationsmöglichkeiten bereit. Während sich im Obergeschoss die Sauna mit Umkleiden und einer Dusche befindet, bietet das Erdgeschoss Platz für einen behaglichen Ruheraum mit weitem Ausblick in die Natur. Dieser wird durch die großen Glasfenster ermöglicht, die auf funktioneller Ebene eine natürliche Belichtung der Innenräume zulassen und auf sinnlicher Ebene die Natur in das Innere einfließen lassen. Aus der Motivation heraus, den Charme der Umgebung nach innen zu transportieren, setzt sich die natürliche Materialwahl hier fort und verbindet das Holz der Saunabänke harmonisch mit einer Decke aus erdfarbenem Lehmputz. Dabei korrespondieren die Linien der Betonwände mit den Latten der Bänke und nehmen damit den kugelförmigen Charakter auf. Leuchten aus Beton runden mit gedämpftem Licht die erholsame Atmosphäre ab.
