W
hile the first quarter of 2022 has thrown some considerable curve balls to our community and local businesses, it is energising to feel the vibrancy and excitement that is building in Caloundra. The new neighbours that we are all welcoming to the region are bringing a youthful joy and eagerness to celebrate, and respect the best of what our town has to offer. Looking forward into 2022, two things should give us all confidence. The first is the trend of an expansion of the types of businesses and sectors represented in Caloundra. To add to this, we have more businesses exporting their products and knowledge outside of the region than ever. Businesses like Greaseboss, Beachtree Distilling Co. or Wander + Wild are no longer rarities on the Coast. This should breathe confidence into us all, as not only do we have increased opportunities now, but so will our
children or grandkids in the years to come. Secondly is the increasing glimmer of light of improving transport and cultural infrastructure to support this region we love. Council will begin construction on the state-of-the-art Caloundra library late 2022, while the state and federal governments have initiated some transport infrastructure spends. Plus, the opening and announcement of numerous bars, cafes and mixed-use residences is improving opportunities for us all to get out and enjoy Caloundra. Caloundra chamber continues to work hard to advocate for available and affordable housing, transport and cultural infrastructure as it is essential to support our community and industry. Bribie breakthrough: Changing tides
I
n January, powerful king tides and a flurry of wild seas left in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Seth caused the northern tip of Bribie Island to split. Now, after months of watching and waiting, it’s official. The Sunshine Coast has a brand-new coastal crossing – and another island! After mapping dramatic changes to the northern part of Bribie Island, the state government has gazetted the impressive breach that has become a dominant feature opposite Golden Beach. This means the new entrance will now be known as the Bribie Island Bar and included in updated charts used by southeast Queensland mariners. The revised charts also will show two islands in the area: Bribie Island (North) and Bribie Island (South). The breakthrough has grown from a few metres to 400-metres wide in a few months since the ocean burst through the fragile isle in early January, about two kilometres south of Caloundra’s Happy Valley.
History of the passage Pumicestone Passage is a 35-kilometre channel of pristine water, which is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, stretching from the tip of Bribie Island near Caloundra in the north, to Deception Bay in the south. The passage has been protected by the fragile strip that forms the northern tip of Bribie Island, creating a calm and attractive waterway for recreational use off Golden Beach. Aware of its fragility and susceptibility to erosion, Sunshine Coast Council has had a Bribie Island Breakthrough Action Plan in place since 2014. This plan outlines the threats to the Golden Beach foreshore in the event of a breakthrough at Bribie Island, and actions to help the council reduce these effects.
Carving a channel On December 14, 2020, pounding seas began breaching Bribie, with waves breaking through to Pumicestone Passage and carving a channel through the island. The Department of Environment and Science (DES) described it as an “unprecedented ocean breakthrough”.
Taking care The major break took place in January this year, two kilometres from the tip of the island. The heavy conditions from the ex-cyclone combined with 2.2 metre tides broke through to the passage in line with Nelson Street, Golden Beach. A Maritime Safety Queensland survey, conducted in February, recorded depths at the site between one to three metres, but they were “generally around a metre”. Coast Guard Caloundra Commander Roger Pearce says the official recognition of the new bar, tabled on March 18, is aimed at informing mariners and improving their safety. He says declaring the Bribie Island Bar as a designated coastal bar will require the use of lifejackets when crossing the waterway. Having made several rescues and watercraft salvages over recent months, the Coast Guard is urging people to stay away from the area, in rough weather conditions. Mr Pearce says the Coast Guard has noticed much more traffic using the entrance. He says, as it is opposite the Caloundra Power Boat Club, it provides quicker access to the sea, but he warns boaties to take care. “While it will be a better bar, it is currently still a washing machine and only navigable at high tide,” Mr Pearce says. “We don’t use it and won’t until it stabilises further.” For up-to-date coverage of Bribie Island, visit sunshinecoastnews.com.au. Caloundra’s big win We’ve long known about Caloundra’s status as a hidden gem and now the rest of the world is in on the secret. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
O
ur very own Caloundra has taken out a silver medal in the annual Wotif. com Aussie Town of the Year Awards. It was named as a “hidden gem” thanks to its pristine beaches and location a stone’s throw from the spectacular Glass House Mountains. The awards recognise the country’s top destinations for 2022. Caloundra came in after Launceston in Tasmania, with Tamworth in New South Wales rounding out the top three Aussie towns. Hervey Bay was the only other Queensland town to make the list, coming in at number seven. The awards are determined by Wotif’s data index that looks at accommodation affordability, quality and traveller satisfaction. It aims to highlight the best of Australia’s diverse destinations to encourage Aussies to explore their own backyard. The data reveals travel interest for Caloundra increasing by close to 50 per cent on Wotif.com in the past 12 months. A contributing factor to its top two placing is the town’s affordability, with an average accommodation rate of $228 per night. Wotif managing director Daniel Finch says 2022 is set to be a pivotal year for domestic tourism and it is wonderful for Caloundra be recognised on the list. “We’re thrilled to see Caloundra come in at second place in the Aussie Town of the Year Award,” Mr Finch says. “Pristine beaches, wonderful accommodation on offer and wow, what a little hidden gem it is on the Sunshine Coast.” Head of industry, trade and development at Visit Sunshine Coast, Andrew Fairbairn, says this recognition is a big win, especially after the Sunshine Coast was voted the world’s number one most loved tourist destination in the 2021 Tourism Sentiment Index. “This is awesome news for the Caloundra tourism industry,” he says. “We really are passionate about tourism and all the visitors that come here. “Recently the Sunshine Coast was
named the most desirable destination in the world, so having Caloundra recognised as the top town is awesome news.” Wotif data also revealed Australia’s travel plans for 2022. Research commissioned by Wotif indicates 88 per cent of Aussies planning to travel this year are looking to explore more of Australia, with two in five (40 per cent) saying they plan to visit Queensland in 2022.

Suitcases bring hope to children Caloundra businesswoman Vicki Barry is calling on the community for help. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
A
long-standing Caloundra hairdressing salon is doing its part to make a difference to the lives of children in the foster system. Frangipani Cutting Crew has been servicing and styling the needs of its clients for more than 20 years. Managing director Vicki Barry has always wanted to do something to help children less fortunate and after hearing about charity Hope in a Suitcase she realised there was a simple yet meaningful way to do her part. Hope in a Suitcase Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with child safety service centres and foster care agencies to bring every child that enters care a new suitcase filled with items of their own.
When children enter the system, they often have nothing more than the clothes on their backs. The suitcases cater to specific age groups, from newborn to early teenagers and includee essential items such as toiletries, underwear// nappies, pyjamas and d clothing. They also include toys, activity packs and books. Ms Barry has registered her salon as collection point for donation items where residents can drop off items that go directly to the charity. “I always wanted to help children in foster care but always had children of my own or worked full-time,” she says. “These children are so in need. They get pulled out of homes, often without warning or if they are in danger. Knowing sometimes (children) arrive at a foster carer’s home and they have nothing, it’s a lovely thing to do to be able to fill up a suitcase for them.” Ms Barry says the generosity of the
Vicki Barry Caloundra community is overwhelming. “We’ve had people bring whole suitcases in. They’ve gone and bought a suitcase and filled it up for a particular age group. It is so amazing how generous people are. ‘Yes, not Noosa!’ campaign sparks interest in Caloundra An innovative ad campaign for a new Caloundra hotel has hit the spot with southern visitors eyeing off the Coast.
I
nterest in Caloundra as an alternative lifestyle destination to Noosa has been sparked by a new $250-million boutique development’s marketing campaign. The team behind the proposed Paloma Paloma on Bulcock Street say a suite of cheeky billboards that went up in Melbourne proclaiming ‘Not Noosa’ had drawn massive southern interest. The bright and bold billboards will now be rolled out in Byron Bay and Sydney to promote the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. “There were almost 100 enquiries in the four days following the billboards going up,” says Colliers director, Daniel Hirst. “The billboards sparked lots of questions and supportive comments through enquiries, along the lines of ‘Yes, not Noosa!’. “Our feedback was that people believe
Caloundra’s a hidden gem and its natural beauty, diversity and safe beaches have been greatly under recognised for years and it’s time this changes.” A billboard promoted the Caloundra development on a busy highway at Tullamarine in Melbourne. “The message we have received from potential buyers is ‘Noosa is great but we love Caloundra and the southern Sunshine Coast’. “The billboards combined with the articles and radio ads produced a groundswell of awareness about Paloma Paloma and what it is bringing to Caloundra.” Paloma Paloma has been described as a world-class development unlike anything seen before in the region, with a boutique hotel and 84 residences.

Bounty balls That luscious combination of coconut and chocolate! Breakfast cups MAKES 10 Customise these however you like; cream cheese with smoked salmon and fresh dill, Brie and cranberry sauce, ham and cheese etc. I particularly love cafe-style scrambled eggs. • 10 slices wholemeal sandwich bread • 2 tbsp. butter, room temperature • 4 large eggs • 1/2 cup thickened cream Preheat oven to 180˚C. Cut the crusts off the bread (freeze for a later use). Roll over the bread gently with a rolling pin to flatten, then cut a large round from each. Butter each side and press into the cup. Bake until golden, six to eight minutes. In a microwaveable dish, beat together the eggs and cream; season with sea salt and cracked pepper. Cook for 2 1/2 minutes or until the eggs start to rise. Scoop out into the bread cups to serve.
MAKES 40 • 4 cups desiccated coconut (plus a little extra for garnish) • 395g can condensed milk • 200g milk chocolate • 1 tbsp. coconut oil In a large bowl, mix together the coconut and condensed milk. Using a teaspoon, roll the mixture into balls and place on a paper-lined baking tray. Place the balls in the freezer for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a microwaveable bowl, melt the chocolate on medium power in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until smooth and creamy. Add the oil and stir until well combined (the oil will thin the chocolate, which makes it go further when coating). Remove the balls from the freezer and dip, one at a time, into the melted chocolate. Return to the tray and sprinkle with a little coconut. Refrigerate until set. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
• 4 slices wholemeal bread • 250g wheel double-cream Brie cheese • 2 tbsp. raspberry jam • 1/4 cup slivered almonds Preheat oven to 180˚C. Remove the crusts from the bread slices (freeze the crusts for making breadcrumbs at a later date). Cut each piece of bread diagonally into quarters. Place on a baking tray. Place the Brie cheese in a small paper-lined cake tin and bake both for six minutes. Remove both, spread the jam over the Brie and sprinkle with almonds. Bake for eight more minutes (or until puffed and lightly golden). Using an egg flip, remove the Brie to a serving plate and dollop over any loose jam and almonds. Serve with the crispy Melba toast.

he Caloundra Chamber of Commerce operates three markets on the Sunshine Coast: The Caloundra Street Fair, Currimundi Lake Twilight Market and the Caloundra Twilight Market. These markets are a wonderful way for the chamber to give back to, and help activate our wonderful community. The markets are also an essential mechanism for the Caloundra chamber to fund the resources needed to help connect, empower and promote our local small and family business community. So why not head down to enjoy the smells, tastes and sounds of your local market? You’ll be helping to support local business owners and their employees. The Caloundra Street Fair operates every Sunday, 8am to 1pm, along Bulcock Street and features more than 120 unique stalls. The Street Fair offerings are handselected, ensuring a wide variety of
products, health and wellbeing services, plus lots of fresh food options and street food. It also features a range of local performers every week, from well-known established performers to emerging artists across a multitude of music genres, performance and street theatre, giving the Street Fair that awesome, laid-back Sunday vibe. Also operating in the heart of Caloundra, the Caloundra Twilight Market operates along the Bulcock Beach Esplanade on the last Friday of each month (excluding July and August) from 5pm to 9pm. Just a short walk down from the main street of Caloundra, this market is the perfect place to relax after a long work week. Bring the whole family down for a night of fun on the waterfront. The Currimundi Lake Twilight Market is a popular local hangout with Your Mates providing its amazing beer on tap, running on the third Friday of each month from 4pm to 8pm (excluding July and August). The Currimundi market has been operating for over a year now and has become incredibly popular with the locals who walk down to
the lake for dinner and drinks. This market is eco-friendly, with no power or generators in use to reduce noise and environmental pollution. Stallholders provide all their products in eco-friendly packaging and no lighting is brought in that could disrupt the local animals, such as the turtles who often nest nearby. With 20 individual food stalls, plus beer, this market is the ultimate foodie location.
