Head into the shop with an idea of your needs and the design of your bedroom beforehand – it can be overwhelming once you are there. If you are planning a very contemporary space, it will be a mistake to buy an ornate dark timber frame. If extra storage is important, there are a range of frames that cleverly incorporate this into the bed.

The furniture What about the rest of the furniture? It’s a good idea to buy bedside tables that are the same height as the bed – these give a streamlined look and you’ll f nd

A storage trunk at the end of the bed is a great idea for extra throws and cushions and to give you a place to sit down to take off your shoes at night. A reading chair in the corner is a great touch if you have the space. Some people won’t be able to do without a dressing table, others will need lots of storage. Work through your routine, your needs and wants and design your space from there.

The lighting Lighting is not only integral to the mood and feel of your bedroom, but it also needs to be practical. Avoid downlights in the bedroom as they are just too harsh. Instead, invest in bedside lamps, recessed LED strip lighting under shelving and task lighting over by the reading chair or near the dressing table. If your space is otherwise quite neutral, create drama with a pendant light or two.

f the exhausting number of choices the home renovator has to make in relation to the kitchen, you would think choosing a sink would be easy. But here too you are spoilt for choice. Here are a few: Stainless steel – The most popular, and inexpensive choice, stainless steel sinks come in a variety of types and sizes. A good choice for most kitchens, stainless steel isn’t always stainless, as it can scratch and show up water spots, but for other stains it is pretty good. Composite – Usually made from granite or quartz and a

resin or acrylic f ller. This makes composite sinks very durable, and good looking, as they take on the look of granite or quartz. Fireclay – Made from ceramic covered by a porcelain enamel, f reclay sinks are tough, but not always resistant to chipping. Australian renovators are rediscovering the classic shapes of farmhouse and butler sinks, which look great in many different styles of kitchens. Single or double – Single bowl sinks are great for compact rooms and in second kitchens, bar areas or butler’s pantries. While some owners shy away

Create a two-tone feature wall. Using two colours on the one wall is easy and really lifts the space. Here’s how: 1. When choosing paint, go for colours with a similar intensity or brightness. Then work out which will go on top and which is best for the lower half of the wall – as a rule the darker shade looks best on the bottom. 2. You will need to then work out the height at which the two colours will meet. Picture your furniture in the room – it will look better if the meeting point does not line up with the top of your furniture. 3. Use painters tape to mark out the line and paint the top colour f rst. Wait until the paint is touch dry before pulling off the tape.
