They say you can never have too much, but it’s not just about quantity, as quality matters too. Advice to ensure your DIY paint job is a splashing success rather than a streaky mess.

There is a sequence to painting a room – after cleaning and prepping, you should paint the skirting boards, picture rails and door frames. Then do the ceiling by f rst cutting in, and then rollering. Lastly get to the walls by cutting in f rst and then rollering.

When painting bathrooms, ensure you buy mould-resistant paint that is made especially for this application. Don’t forget to calculate how much paint you need before hitting the paint shop, by measuring to work out the total square metreage of the wall or room you’ll be working on. And if you’re doing two coats don’t forget to double that f gure. As a rule acrylic paint will cover about 15 square metres per litre.

Paint manufacturers have great websites these days that have heaps of inspirational photos, tips and tools to help you get the right colour and product for the job. It’s worth checking these out before heading to your local paint shop.

ardwood timber decks can be cared for with minimal effort and in many cases, a little preventative maintenance will keep your deck looking spotless for years to come. Regular or daily upkeep requires no more than a sweep with a soft bristle broom to remove dirt and garden residue. Pressure washing is another option, but always be mindful as it can splinter wood and strip the deck of its protective coating. Once a year, mop the deck with a specialised cleaning product. Without this care, exposed timber will become weathered and you’ll have boards that rot and become loose. After cleaning, sand the deck in the

direction of the timber to remove splinters and then, reseal with deck oil, paint or varnish. Before the decking f nish is applied, remove plants and furniture. But if your timber f ooring is turning grey from weather or is discoloured due to construction, a suitable range of staining products are available to enhance the timber’s natural colour. It’s not surprising home renovation apps are becoming more popular and are making the process less stressful for consumers. Following the success of its iPhone app late last year, Onef are has recently launched an iPad equivalent to connect customers with more than 40,000 local businesses including electricians, plumbers, painters and landscapers. The app aims to save customers time by allowing

users to post photos of their remodel designs and receive quotes from tradies in the area within 24 hours. Similar to Onef are, the Builder App also allows renovators to get in contact with builders and suppliers. Designed by TV presenter Shelley Craft and her husband, the most impressive feature is the ‘get quotes’ function, which sends a message to all tradies and supplies within 25 kilometres of the job. The app is specif c to Australia and free. MagicPlan is another free app to aid in the planning and

managing of your renovation or build and aims to give users an image of their current f oor plan. The iOS and Android-designed app makes full use of the smartphone’s camera, compass and GPS. Simply stand in the centre of a room and point the camera to all four corners. The app will then accurately measure rooms to generate a 3D f oor plan which can be downloaded into PDF, JPG or DXF format. Solar has been a hot topic over the past 12 months with the government changing the rules on tariffs. WWOL staff have seen an increase in demand due to power price increases. Consumer conf dence in solar (PV) systems has been increasing and rather than relying on rebates from energy retailers, many consumers now want to buy a solar system to offset their power bills (or at least come close to it). They are also changing the way they use power. WWOL customers also say energy retailers are becoming more competitive in relation to the buy back and purchasing of energy. The price of solar systems have reduced in cost – for example in 2008 a 1.5-kilowatt system cost $15,000. It is now $1990 installed.

WIDE WORLD OF LIGHTS

• LED globes and lighting use up to 80 per cent less power than incandescent lamps and last up to 25 years. • Unlike halogen and f uoro, LED does not produce UV. • LED has 100 per cent luminosity from the f rst second you f ick the switch, unlike f uoros which take a couple of minutes to reach full brightness. • LED produces minimal heat, which means they are safe with insulation and combustible materials in the ceiling space. Halogens can become very hot and need a 200mm clearance around every downlight. • LED lamps have very little colour fade over the life of the lamp. On the other

hand, f uoros fade dramatically. • LED lamps are environmentally friendly. • LED lamps are available in all shapes and sizes to f t 99 per cent of f ttings on the market. • Other benef ts of LEDs are that in commercial settings they reduce OH&S concerns as there is less need to get up into high areas to change them, and they reduce heat, therefore air-conditioning units are not having to work as hard.
