As Mother’s Day approaches, we take a moment to honour the women who have helped shape our lives in so many ways. It’s a special day for every mum – biological, adoptive, foster, stepmothers and the many mother figures who offer their love, strength and support. It’s also a day for those who’ve walked the often challenging path to motherhood through IVF, surrogacy or other means that required immense courage and hope. And just as importantly, we acknowledge those still on that journey, those who long to be mothers, and those for whom this day carries mixed emotions. As a mum of three grown children myself, some of my most treasured memories include cold cups of tea and slightly burnt toast delivered proudly to my bedside, and the joy of handmade cards and schoolstall gifts given with wide-eyed excitement. In this issue, journalist Linda Hooper shares the stories of two remarkable local women who are not only inspiring in their own right, but also happen to be mums. Their journeys remind us of the many diverse and beautiful ways that motherhood is lived. To all the mums – wherever you are on your journey – you are seen, appreciated and celebrated. limate change is set to affect the health of blood donors globally, while rising rates of disease and natural disasters may drive increased demand for blood, new research reveals. The study, conducted by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, comes just weeks after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused a record number of cancelled blood donations. It urges governments and blood services to begin preparing for the growing challenges posed by a changing climate. Dr Elvina Viennet, Lifeblood researcher and Adjunct Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), warns that future

blood supplies will be affected by weather events from fires to floods, changing patterns of blood-borne diseases including dengue fever, and other health issues associated with climate change such as blood pressure and ‘climate anxiety’. “As well as limiting the mobility of large numbers of people, these events disrupt the storage, safety and transportation of blood which has a short shelf life,” Dr Viennet says. “Climate change may impact some infectious diseases that can be transmitted via blood and can prevent people from donating. For example, predictions of increased rainfall and warmer temperatures in certain regions, including

donation appointments in New South Wales and on the Queensland coast were cancelled, resulting in a steep drop in the nation’s blood stocks, with many people unable to give and hospitals stockpiling blood in preparation. “For the first time here in Australia, we saw a weather event have an unprecedented impact on donations. We’re fortunate to have a stable and safe blood supply, with thousands of people in other states across Australia responding to our urgent call for blood,” she says. “Here in Australia, we’re now particularly focused on blood-borne diseases, which can increase after flooding events due to water lying around. This is a concern for the safety and stability of the blood supply as severe flooding continues for parts of Australia. “For example, Queensland Health recently confirmed the first detection of the tropical disease Japanese encephalitis in mosquitoes in Brisbane, and warns that the risk of human exposure may increase following the recent flooding.” The study emphasises the need to reduce reliance on traditional bloodsupply chains and have adaptable strategies that offer rapid responses to climate-related challenges. It recommends governments and blood services prepare with critical tools such as early warning systems, disease surveillance, flexible approaches to donor eligibility and blood transport in emergencies, hospital preparation and expanding collection services so donations can be relocated quickly. Recent global innovations included: cell-salvage techniques during surgery; the use of drones to transport blood when other transit is disrupted: and ‘walking blood banks’ which collect donations at the site of crises.

Australia, could intensify mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, West Nile Virus and malaria, and potentially see them spread to new areas. “This research is important because blood and blood-product supplies are critical for medical treatments like surgeries, trauma care and chronic disease management – plus they save lives in emergency situations,” Dr Viennet says. Lead researcher and UniSC Associate Professor Helen Faddy says it’s believed to be the first study to globally examine the full extent of the risks of climate change – from donor health to blood distribution – on each stage of the blood supply chain. It was based on a comprehensive literature review of international studies. Assoc Prof Faddy says less obvious health conditions and heat-related illness could reduce people’s eligibility and willingness to give blood. “We could see new diseases emerge and other health issues such as blood pressure and hydration exacerbated by heat, as well as psychological distress and ‘climate anxiety’ impact donors,” she says. “At the same time, shifts in disease prevalence and natural disaster frequency could increase the demand for blood transfusions due to conditions such as pregnancy complications, cardiovascular disease and sickle cell disease. “We could also face greater difficulty in finding the right blood for patients. With rising sea levels increasing migration rates, it’s essential to have more blood donors from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and to increase the number of people who give blood.” The research team says Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and its aftermath illustrates the impacts natural disasters could have on Australia’s blood supply. Dr Viennet says more than 3500 blood

t’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11 – a day to honour the special women in our lives, whether it’s a mum, stepmother, adoptive mother, foster carer or mother figure. To celebrate, My Weekly Preview spoke with two inspirational women: Lauren Applegate and Jenna Punshon. When Lauren Applegate was a toddler, her grandfather nicknamed her ‘Possum’ because she was always climbing, exploring and pushing the boundaries. That confident and stubborn spirit still burns brightly in the 40-year-old Nirimba mum who has defied pregnancy hurdles and fought a brave battle against breast cancer – all the while excelling in her career. Sitting in the dining room of Lauren and her husband Brad’s exquisitely furnished Hamptons-style home, it’s hard to believe that the past three years have been filled with so many challenges. Lauren looks stunning and when I comment on her long, lustrous hair, she proudly tells me it is a wig. Later, she pulls it off to show me her short, silver-coloured hair, which is growing again following many months of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation and a bi-lateral mastectomy. For the record, she looks just as pretty with short-cropped hair. Lauren became a mum at the age of 38, after growing up thinking it would be very difficult to fall pregnant. “When I was around 13, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and went

on the pill at a very young age,” she says. “After Brad and I married, I went to a specialist at Buderim Private Hospital, and he said he did not think I had polycystic ovaries. He thought I just hadn’t been ovulating.” Lauren took Clomid to help her ovulate and after four months, she fell pregnant with Beau. “I loved being pregnant and seeing my body change,” she recalls. “I felt well and had no nausea but because of low blood pressure, I had a couple of fainting spells.” Lauren was determined not to have an epidural or caesarean section, but ended up having both as Beau was in a ‘frank breech’ position (when the baby’s legs are folded flat up against his head and his bottom is closest to the birth canal). “He was a little blue when he was born, so they took him away to administer oxygen,” she says. “Brad was getting panicked, so he ended up on the floor with some of the nurses comforting him.” Lauren and Brad settled happily into parenthood, both working from home, while they marvelled at the growth of their “cheeky and confident” son. Sixteen months after his birth, their world came crashing down when Lauren was diagnosed with Grade 3 aggressive cancer in her right breast. “I had a pain at the side of my breast, so called my doctor to ask for an ultrasound. In my mid-20s, I had fibroadenomas – nonmyweeklypreview.com.au

cancerous cysts, so wasn’t too worried. But when I looked at the screen and saw it was different, I had a bad feeling straight away. They did a mammogram the same day, followed by a core needle biopsy. Then, I got the diagnosis.” Lauren is the sort of person who likes to know all the facts and statistics: “The day I got my diagnosis, I had a cry in the car but by the time I got home, I was straight onto our health insurance company, life insurance company and was making medical appointments.” Lauren also set about “making the most” of her cancer treatment time. After she started to lose her hair, she invited girlfriends around for champagne and had her head shaved. For her weekly chemotherapy treatment, she chose a special outfit of the day. “I would take a photo and send it to my Group Chat, my support network,” Lauren says. “I wanted to get dressed up as if I was going somewhere nice. It made me feel better. For my last chemo session, I joked that I would go in a ballgown – and I did.” Between her last immunotherapy session and surgery, Lauren and Brad took Beau to Santa’s Village in Lapland, visiting nine countries in four weeks. Lauren kept working in her role as director of customer success and marketing for Envestnet Yodlee: an international, New York-based company. She’ll be visiting New York in June with her mum. Lauren and Brad are not sure if they will be able to have any more children, but they are filled with gratitude that they were able to have Beau – a child whom his daycare teachers describe as “the boyest boy they have”. “He loves full-on, rough-and-tumble play and is very confident – in fact, too confident,” Lauren says. “He’s the kid who will take a bike up to the top of a slide and try to ride it down. He’s super independent and a bit of a daredevil. And he loves climbing.”

enna Punshon was just seven years old when she decided she wanted to be a foster carer. Her wish came true at the age of 21 and, 16 years later, Jenna and her husband Casey have fostered more than 50 children. It’s an incredible milestone that she can reflect on with pride this Mother’s Day. But Jenna says the rewards that come from being foster parents far outweigh any sense of personal achievement. “To know that you’ve played a tiny part in making a difference to someone’s life is so rewarding,” she says. “It’s not always easy. There are times when I think, ‘What have I done?’. But we’re still doing it 16 years later, so it’s right for us.” As a little girl, Jenna was always interested in global humanitarian issues. “It made me aware that there were people less fortunate than me,” she says. “When I was seven years old, I was at

the library and saw a flyer advertising for foster carers. I gave it to my mum and asked if we could be a foster family. “She said it was something she had always wanted to do but she didn’t think it was the right thing for us at that time. “I decided that if they wouldn’t do it, then I would. I started inquiring about it as soon as I turned 18.” Jenna describes her own childhood as idyllic: “My mum was a stay-at-home mum. Her world revolved around my brother and I and we had a fortunate childhood. “When we got home from school, we would sit on the veranda and do our homework while enjoying focaccia bread or cupcakes. It was wonderful.” Despite her close relationship with her mum, Jenna moved out when she was 17. “I was quite independent and didn’t want to follow rules. In hindsight, moving out of home was a good thing as my mum

and I became closer once I moved out.” Jenna met her future husband when she was aged 17 and he was 19. “When I turned 18, I told him I wanted to be a foster carer and he said, ‘Okay, that’s fine but can you wait until we are married?’,” she remembers. They married when Jenna was 21. The day after they returned from their honeymoon, they applied to become foster carers. “It took about six months for all the assessments and on the day we were approved, we got our first phone call for a baby needing a placement,” Jenna says. “We hit the ground running from day one.” A year after they started fostering, Jenna and Casey had their own child and now have three biological children aged 15, 13 and three. “We also have an adult daughter who came into our lives when she was just nine, and we have a beautiful little girl who joined our family when we picked her up from the hospital as a newborn – she is nearly eight now,” Jenna says. “Some children have just stayed a few nights, and some go back and forth. Last week, we cared for a newborn baby for a week, straight from hospital, and it was beautiful to have baby snuggles again.” Jenna says many people considering foster parenting worry about how they will give the child back to their families. “It’s not about you, though – it’s about the child,” she says. “Children should be with their families if they can be, and as hard as it may be to say goodbye as their carers, knowing you can be a soft landing for what can be the scariest, loneliest part of a child’s life is so rewarding. I just want them to feel loved, safe and as happy as they can be. “I hope that they will remember their time with us positively and want that for their own families one day, too.” IFYS (Integrated Family and Youth Services) is always in need of foster parents. Invitation to participate in Parkinson’s Disease research The University of the Sunshine Coast are seeking research participants who have diagnosed Parkinson’s Disease. We are undertaking a 4-week research project to investigate different modes of balance and gait training that may help to improve motor symptoms in people with Parkinson’s. The research team are seeking participants with Parkinson’s Disease aged 18 years and over who are able to stand and walk unassisted. The research project involves a 4-week balance and gait training intervention, with 3 training sessions each week (approximately 20 minutes each). WHEELS TURN SLOWLY A parliamentary inquiry into the use of electric mobility devices has been welcomed amid increasing injury presentations at hospitals.

he announcement of a parliamentary inquiry into the use of e-mobility devices, including electric scooters and bikes, has been welcomed amid growing safety concerns about their use. The inquiry will be established by the State Development, Infrastructure and Works Committee and focus on the benefits, safety risks, rules, enforcement and importation laws around the devices. The state government says there was a 112 per cent rise in injuries to personal e-mobility device (PMD) riders, passengers

and pedestrians from 2021 to 2024. Tragically, eight PMD users died last year. Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg, who is also the Member for Buderim, says he is committed to improving safety for all road users and pedestrians. “The increase in injuries and deaths we are seeing because of unsafe and unlawful riding cannot be ignored and I share the community’s concern,” Mr Mickelberg says. “We want to hear from community members, road-use groups, disability

advocates, health and trauma experts, academia, the e-mobility industry and all levels of government. “It’s important we consider all research and opinions, to ensure a safe and reliable future for e-scooters and e-bikes, especially as we welcome visitors from all over the world for the 2032 Games.” Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton, who has provided recommendations from first responders, local community groups and residents on what reforms are needed to increase safety around PMDs, has welcomed the announcement. “The Noosa community appreciates the announcement following our advocacy and call for action last parliament sitting to see an end to the unlawful riding and illegal e-motorbikes,” she says. “May this inquiry, and recommendations from it, deliver real improvements for safety on our roads and pathways.” Ms Bolton’s attempts to have the committee report delivered by August 1 this year failed. It will instead be due by March 30 next year, which she called “deeply disappointing”. The RACQ is also welcoming the inquiry announcement, after years of advocating for reforms. General manager of advocacy Joshua

Cooney says the inquiry is a necessary and sensible step towards change. “We cannot deny that e-scooters have become a popular mode of transport across the state and will continue to become increasingly important in the mobility landscape,” he says. “Our members and the research tell us that we must find ways to co-exist and make them safer for all road users.” The club has been calling for major changes to e-scooter rules following research that reveals presentations to emergency departments are becoming more frequent and more severe in Queensland. Severe facial and head injuries have become a major concern for hospitals. RACQ has been advocating for full-face helmets to be mandatory for people using private, stand-up e-scooters and for hired scooters to transition to more stable sit-down scooters that have a lower centre of gravity. “We are looking forward to making a detailed submission to the inquiry and working with the government to make all personal mobility devices safer,” he says. CULTURAL HERITAGE PARTNER Blue Heart Sunshine Coast has begun a new chapter in collaboration with the Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation (KKPAC), now an official partner. KKPAC joins Sunshine Coast Council, Unitywater and the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation in this partnership-based project focused on floodplain management in the Maroochy River catchment. The 5000-hectare project area includes more than 1700 hectares of public land, surrounded mostly by rural and rurallifestyle properties. The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Blue Heart partners. KKPAC chair Norman Bond says the organisation has long been involved with Blue Heart activities, providing advice and helping safeguard cultural heritage. “While our role in this project has been focused on cultural heritage, we recognise the broader importance of initiatives like the Blue Heart in addressing environmental challenges and creating a sustainable future,” Mr Bond says. Council liveability and natural assets group executive Bill Haddrill says welcoming Traditional Custodians as equal partners will bring deep knowledge and new insights to the project.

MYTHBUSTING SPORT DIETS The latest research explodes some popular ideas on how to optimise performance and reach sporting goals.

hree University of the Sunshine Coast sports dietitians are busting popular myths for people wanting to improve their fitness or sporting goals. Professor Gary Slater, lecturer Dr Amy-Lee Bowler and clinical educator Zara Nance have decades of experience in advising athletes, working with state and national organisations across rugby league, swimming and skateboarding. They hope their latest research sheds light on the facts, to help everyone from

gym junkies and amateur athletes to professional sportspeople. They say fuelling your body correctly for sport is vital to provide energy to perform and that the correct nutrition can support muscle repair, prevent fatigue and decreases risk of injury – all while optimising performance. Myth 1: the carnivore diet enhances performance Zara Nance’s response: Though popular online, the carnivore diet – comprising only animal products and

excluding carbs, fibre, and plants – is not ideal for athletes. Low carbohydrate intake leads to under-fuelling and reduced performance. The absence of fibre harms gut health, and excessive protein and saturated fats can impair immunity, bone and heart health. Socially and practically, it’s hard to sustain. The diet’s hype is often driven by anecdotal evidence and financial motives rather than science. Myth 2: fasted training boosts fat loss Professor Gary Slater’s response: Training on an empty stomach may slightly increase fat use during exercise, but it does not significantly impact long-term fat loss. Fuel needs depend on session length and intensity. Longer or intense sessions benefit from pre-exercise snacks or liquids for better performance and recovery. Ultimately, food is fuel. Myth 3: magnesium supplements improve recovery and sleep Dr Amy Bowler’s response: Despite widespread use, there’s no scientific evidence supporting magnesium supplements for improved recovery or sleep in athletes. Most studies showing benefits were conducted in at-risk populations, not athletes. Instead, recovery should focus on quality carbs, lean protein, hydration and whole foods. Managing caffeine intake also supports better sleep.

NEW DV HOUSING PROJECT A Sunshine Coast children’s support charity has launched a transitional housing project that will help families fleeing domestic violence. The $5 million initiative will help SunnyKids provide safe and supported accommodation. The announcement comes as Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month continues in May. The first stage, including three three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouses, is being made possible through Peter Stannard and Ann Smales, from Firefly Education. “We believe every family deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and stable home,” Mr Stannard says. “Supporting this project through SunnyKids is our way of giving families a second chance.” SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope says the need for transitional housing is urgent. “We see the heartbreaking impact of the housing crisis every day,” she says. “These homes will provide more than just a roof over a family’s head. They will offer the support, stability and space to heal and move toward independence.” SunnyKids has launched the $100K Challenge to help raise the remaining $2.5 million needed to complete the next three homes. Rally for a Cause chair Kerry Spencer says the award win is a ‘thank you’ to those who have supported the charity since its inception. “These awards are for everybody that has supported us, the small and large businesses, the individuals that have rallied and raised funds whether it be through sausage sizzles, auctions or even raffles – this is for you,” Ms Spencer says. “What

started as a well-intentioned group of businesspeople wanting to do more to help a family facing life-changing news about their son, to today being able to assist every eligible recipient that is nominated, we truly are making the communities we serve more caring and compassionate. We don’t do it for recognition, but it is humbling to know that what we are doing is getting noticed and it is helping to shine a positive light on our communities and the lengths we will go to help others during some of the most challenging times in their lives.” Celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, Rally for a Cause has raised more than $4 million and assisted 360 families. The charity’s biggest annual fundraising event is a four-day mystery car rally, the Dunga Derby, that leaves the coast each August and heads inland with more than 200 participants. The 150m bridge also acts as a crucial wildlife corridor for native animals such as insects, frogs, reptiles and small mammals, including sugar gliders and echidnas. The structure connects habitats south of the bridge – for example, Edward Corbould Environment Reserve, Bobbie Sattler Nature Refuge and the Caloundra Conservation Park – with reserves to the north. These include the Honey Farm Road Environment Reserve and the Mooloolah River floodplain. Recent repairs completed by Sunshine

Coast Council have brought this vital link back to life for the large variety of precious creatures that use it each day. Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Tim Burns says the project is vital for connecting habitat for wildlife across the region. “Our surveys have shown that the Cresswell Road bridge is used by a large variety of native animals as a safe passage over the busy Caloundra Road,” Cr Burns says. For arboreal mammals that primarily live in trees (such as possums and squirrel gliders), a 130m long elevated rope bridge was replaced with new and durable

ladder-style rope netting. Back on land, a vegetated section of the bridge caters to small mammals, frog, insects and reptiles and was weeded and replanted with 530 native plants. Shelter from predators for animals crossing the land bridge has been provided in the form of innovative habitat pods. These are tiny, biodegradable, teepeeshaped cardboard structures, which provide a temporary wildlife habitat until the native plants mature. These pods, created by wildlife ecologists at ReHabitat, will biodegrade over time, enriching the soil and promoting vegetation regeneration.

Buderim VIEW Club president Antoinette O’Connor says the 65th anniversary is a chance to reflect on decades of “making a difference” and look ahead to the future, particularly in the current economic climate. “We have all been hit by the rising cost of living – be it power prices, food or petrol, but these rises have had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough,” she says. “Parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting dinner on the table or

THE FAMOUS VS THE INFAMOUS

GIVING ‘NESTING’ A NEW MEANING

He may not have quite become a legend in his own lifetime yet, but Ashley Robinson has still managed to turn heads and make the headlines.

Sami Muirhead offers some food for thought for gift ideas and celebrations as she contemplates being spoilt this Mother’s Day.

was filling in at Sea FM the other morning while the brekky crew were on holidays. Ever-patient professional announcer Bec Turnbull tossed up to what I was famous for: Priscilla the python which crawled into Robert Irwin’s pocket at an inappropriate time and stole the show. I have a few ‘claims to fame’ – probably none to be proud of but still infamous. As a 15-year-old hot head playing AFL for the Nambour Blues, I pushed an umpire (there was more to it, but still no excuse), got sent to the judiciary and made the Nambour Chronicle for all the wrong reasons. They wanted to give me a life ban but a very nice goal umpire at my end (possibly my best mate’s dad) told the judiciary that the umpire poked me in the chest first, so I got six weeks. Phew! A few years later, I made the front page of the Longreach Leader for being the first player sin-binned in Central West Rugby League when the new rule was introduced: game 1, first half. A couple of years later, playing for Maroochydore, I got sin-binned three times in one game after coach Harry Reed told me to keep doing the same thing to the same bloke. By the way, we won the game,

and I only found out two decades later (when I went to work for Harry) that he thought we were a better chance winning the game with 12 men rather than having me on the field. Nice. Then, there was the time I was in a busy bookstore in Eumundi and I was staring at this bloke and he was staring back. It turned out he thought I was someone he knew but was wrong, and I thought he was comedian Eric Idle. We both exchanged greetings and I told him how much he looked like Eric Idle. He went on to say how talented Eric was and laid it on pretty thick, which was all fine – until I found out the next day that it was him (via a media friend I had). So, I guess I am famous for getting the p*ss taken out of me by someone who was really famous. While all of the above probably explain my mediocre existence, the real icing on the cake must be my starring role on a certain social media page. Vision of me in a fluoro Bintang singlet, barefooted, trying to solve a traffic altercation on Nicklin Way and nearly getting punched by a female has to be my shining moment. Eat your heart out, Priscilla!

ou know what my secret desire is for Mother’s Day? To order a Combination Phoenix Nest Deluxe. What is this, you ask? It’s king prawns, Chinese barbecued pork, straw mushrooms and bamboo shoots served in a golden fried-potato nest, topped with cashew nuts and quail eggs. Okay, you can hold the quail eggs. But I have wanted to eat this bucketlist dish since I was a kid because it was the most expensive thing on my favourite Chinese restaurant menu. I will also be partaking in lemon chicken, prawn toast and sizzling steak. Forget chrysanthemums and chocolates. I would eat Chinese for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If it is good enough for billions in China, why do we have to ration ourselves with these tasty treats? The other big activity I have planned for Mother’s Day (can you tell I am overinvested in this one perfect day of the year?) is to read the actual newspaper in bed. Remember the days when you felt smugly up to date because you read the paper from back to front? These days,

there is no start or finish to the news cycle. Endless doom scrolling makes me feel anxious and overwhelmed as I know I will never get to the end. Oh, for the sense of completion of a finished newspaper. Okay, back to happier thoughts. Chinese. My local favourite restaurant is in Caloundra. It has dragons, red and gold wallpaper and little chubby Buddhas scattered everywhere (very 1985). Some of the tables even have lazy Susans. When we celebrated the birth of our first baby, we got the lazy Susan table and I thought I had hit the jackpot. Over the years, we have gone there for just about every family celebration you can imagine. We embrace the authentic aesthetic and we just love the menu. So whether it’s a newspaper or rice paper, here’s to all our beautiful mums. Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for all that you do. You nurture and inspire us, run around, worry and protect us. We are your biggest cheerleaders. My mum did a great job raising three kids all by herself ... even if she never did splurge on that Combination Phoenix Nest Deluxe.

RETAIL SPENDING REMAINS ‘AT A STEADY PACE’ Anticipation of cyclone helped push up grocery sales in Queensland, despite a negative effect on restaurants, cafes and other stores.

onsumer spending continues to tick higher, albeit at a sluggish pace, especially in supermarkets and grocery stores. Retail trade rose 0.3 per cent in March for a strong annual pace of 4.3 per cent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported recently. The data implies that a Reserve Bank cash interest rate cut in February had little impact on spending in March. That cut to 4.10 per cent was the first in four years. “Retail spending continues to grow at a steady pace, with food-related spending in supermarkets and grocery stores the main driver of growth,” ABS business statistics head Robert Ewing says. “Supermarket and grocery store sales were especially strong in Queensland, where households stockpiled essentials in anticipation of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.” Turnover for the month totalled $37.3 billion. Food retailing had the largest rise in turnover, up 0.7 per cent, along with other retailing, while sales fell 0.5 per cent for cafes, restaurants and takeaway food, along with services and department stores. Spending on clothing, footwear and accessories rose 0.3 per cent in the month. Retail spending grew in all states in March except Queensland, which was in the midst of Alfred. “The extreme weather early in the month led to significant disruptions for businesses and households throughout

Queensland,” Mr Ewing says. “These included temporary business closures for many retailers, particularly cafes and restaurants, while people were also advised to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.” The statistics bureau also released the producer price index: a measure of inflation for sellers of goods and services. It rose 0.3 per cent in the March quarter to be up 3.7 per cent over the year. The retail spending figures will play a role in the Reserve Bank’s next decision on May 20 on monetary policy, AMP chief economist Shane Oliver says. The current market consensus is for a cut of up to 25 points on the day, taking the rate to under three per cent. – AAP.

‘RESILIENT’ HOUSING MARKET CONTINUES TO THRIVE April marks the fourth-consecutive month of growth, with regional Queensland posting strong figures.

ustralia’s property market is staging a powerful resurgence, echoing the strong conditions of 2021, as national housing prices continue their upward trajectory. Ray White chief economist Nerida Conisbee says that in the latest data, April marked the fourth consecutive month of growth, signalling renewed momentum across house and unit markets. Figures show national house prices climbed 0.4 per cent in April to a median of $917,433 – up 5.2 per cent over the past year. Units rose even faster, increasing by 0.5 per cent for the month and 4.6 per cent annually, reaching a median of $685,637. “This widespread acceleration suggests we’re entering a new phase in the market cycle, with stronger conditions likely ahead as interest rate cuts materialise,” Ms Conisbee says. She says the recovery, which began in January, has strengthened with each passing month. Analysis shows that 13 out of 14 regions across Australia have seen accelerating growth when comparing the

past three months to the previous quarter. In many areas, monthly growth is nearing or exceeding 1 per cent, with unit markets often outperforming houses. Ms Conisbee says the resurgence comes against a backdrop of significant global financial turbulence. Recent economic shocks, including market volatility triggered by the US ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, have heightened investor caution. Yet, in the face of this uncertainty, Australian residential property is emerging as a preferred safe haven.

“Property offers a unique combination of stability and tangibility that appeals to investors during times of volatility,” Ms Conisbee says. “It’s a physical asset with enduring value, and it responds positively to interest rate movements.” The Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to cut interest rates at its next meeting on May 20. Markets are already pricing in several more reductions throughout the year – moves that could dramatically increase borrowing capacity and further stoke demand.

Figures show that Western and South Australia are setting the pace, with both capital and regional markets delivering double-digit growth. Regional Queensland and Brisbane also posted strong figures, with annual growth of 8.4 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively. The ripple effect is now reaching previously lagging markets, suggesting that price growth is broadening nationwide. Ms Conisbee says that, looking ahead, all signs point to continued strength in the housing market through the second quarter and beyond. A combination of rate cuts, investor appetite, supply constraints and policydriven demand is setting the stage for a sustained period of growth. “With interest rate cuts on the horizon and increasing investor interest in the stability of residential property amid global volatility, this momentum appears likely to continue through the remainder of the second quarter,” Ms Conisbee says. For buyers, sellers, and investors alike, Australia’s housing market is once again proving its resilience – and its ability to thrive, even in uncertain times.
