WHERE TO START
Spring is here and what better time than now to enhance your home with a little TLC. When it comes to landscaping projects, think of your yard as a blank canvas and build from there. For the inside, the obvious place to start is with a spring clean and a splash of paint. And, if it’s a new style you seek, the cottagecore trend is a favourite this season.
The beginning of spring is an important time in the world of gardening. Here are five tasks to ensure your garden grows well through to the warmer months. • Ready the garden bed. Rake, mulch and add fresh soil. • Feed your lawn. Early spring is the ideal time to feed and repair the grass prior to the hot summer months. Aerate the soil and then use a good fertiliser. • Prune. Get to work and cut back overhanging tree branches and slowgrowing hedges. Trimming back plants will encourage growth. • Start planting. Seeds and seedlings should be planted into pots and transferred once they strengthen and the weather warms up. However, plant vegetables straight into the ground.
ON TREND: COTTAGECORE Cosy, whimsical and featuring a muted colour palette, cottagecore conjures feelings of nostalgia and introduces a sense of calm into any space. First and foremost a lifestyle movement, it has now made its way into interior design circles. Cottagecore brings simple textures, hues and materials together to create a traditional homely style. Introduce nature to your space with bunches of flowers, potted plants, various green tones and sustainable materials including jute, bamboo and timber. Get to work on a DIY project and upcycle old chairs, tables and cabinets to bring additional charm to your home.
SIMPLE SPACES Your outdoor entertaining area can be as styled or as simple as you like it. We love this space with its natural surroundings and plantings, solid timber furniture and decking. Add interchangeable seasonal colour with flowers. For spring, we like tulips, pretty wisteria and daffodils.

Cottage: This theme conjures up themes of quaint English gardens filled with colour. Plant a wide variety of flowering plants including roses and blue lace flower. BE INSPIRED The Australian Institute of Architects’ Queensland Architecture Awards celebrate the best of the best. Categories range from residential to commercial, sustainable architecture and urban design. Here, we take a look at two of our favourite winning homes.
PROPERTY: Beck Street, LineburgWang DESCRIPTION: The Beck Street residence makes an intriguing delight of the building’s location in a flood prone area, while enhancing the qualities of an existing 1960s brick and hardwood framed home. The concrete and brick base of the refurbishment, constrained by an overland flow path and sewer that run through the site, enables the lower level of the house to be permeable to flood waters. Defined with a palette of red and terracotta, the base is cool and robust, moderating the light and temperature in an inventive and effective response to southeast Queensland’s sub-tropical weather and hydrology.

2. CREATE A POOL DESIGN LOOKBOOK It’s often difficult to put your ideas into words. Pool builders and designers appreciate when customers come to them with pictures from magazines, swimming pool photo galleries, or even beautiful photos from your holiday. They give your pool builder an understanding of what you’re interested in and how to incorporate your style preferences into the swimming pool design. It also ensures that you and your builder are on the same page. 3. RESEARCH THE THREE TYPES OF INGROUND POOLS Dig deep to find the right pool design for your home. A swimming pool is an investment, like a car or a house. You wouldn’t just buy any house on any block, would you? The same rules apply

when thinking about your pool design. You can build your pool out of concrete, fibreglass, and even vinyl. And that’s just the first step. Coping, cleaning systems, filtering systems, and artistic finishing touches. The list of variations goes on and on. FIND A CREDIBLE POOL BUILDER Once you’ve decided to dive into owning a swimming pool, the best way to ensure a smooth building process is to choose a seasoned swimming pool construction professional. 6. CONSIDER THE WEATHER IN YOUR AREA Depending on where you live, the weather can dictate certain pool design decisions. People in colder climates should consider enclosures to prolong the pool season. Those living in wetter climates also reap the benefits of having an indoor pool. In temperate climates – places where it never gets overly warm – pool heaters are useful. Have you considered adding a pool cover to your pool design? Many of these options are good ideas to think about for your pool design, and your local weather can make them necessities. 7. KNOW HOW YOU WANT TO USE YOUR POOL Stop and think about why you’re installing a swimming pool. Is it for your kids? For entertaining? Is it an investment? Do you want it to make a dramatic architectural statement? Or is a relaxing retreat for you and your spouse? Answering these questions will help tell you what kind of swimming pool you want. A swimming pool for kids might include a slide and a wading area. It probably doesn’t need high-end glass tile finishing or a vanishing edge. But if you want something that is as visually appealing as it is enjoyable to use, you might consider a built-in water feature, more expensive coping and a negative edge. A client with a clear idea for their pool design is a builder’s best friend. And, don’t forget to think about sun safety during this process. 8. ESTABLISH A BUDGET You probably already know what you’re willing to spend on a new swimming pool, but it’s important to speak with your pool builder to
gather more information and get a sense of what your project will cost. Your pool builder will be able to listen to what you want and give you an estimate on what it will cost to make it happen. You may have to adjust your plans, or you may find you have the resources to add to your initial pool design. Either way, it’s crucial that both you and your builder know what your budget is from the start. 9. CONSIDER LONG-TERM COSTS Owning a swimming pool can be quite affordable. Upkeep, especially if you take a few energy-saving steps, can literally cost pennies a day. But it’s best to have an idea of what those costs are. Factor in how much water it will take to keep your swimming pool full, cleaning and water maintenance costs, and any accessories (pool covers, filters, toys, etc.) you willl need to purchase. 10. CHECK YOUR LOCAL BUILDING CODES Your local pool builder can help you with this, but it’s also a good idea to know the rules yourself. Some areas require perimeter fences of a certain height. Some need the fences to lock. Others require a fence around only the swimming pool itself. You’ll also want to inquire about building permits, building restrictions, noise policies, and property tax concerns. Keeping on top of the local codes will mean you
won’t be disappointed if you aren’t able to have the pool design of your dreams. 11. DON’T FORGET ABOUT INSURANCE When establishing a budget, don’t forget to think long term. Contact your insurance carrier and find out if owning a swimming pool affects your homeowner’s policy—no one likes to be surprised. 12. DON’T SKIMP ON THE POOL DESIGN FEATURES YOU WANT Yes, we told you to stick to your budget, but it is also important to have the pool design you have been dreaming of. Retrofitting a swimming pool is never as easy as the initial install. So, if you pool design dream includes the slide or the cascading waterfall over the slab of granite, then go for it. If it busts the budget, ask your pool builder where you might be able to save elsewhere. You never want the swimming pool that’s almost perfect.
14. BE GREEN AND ECO-FRIENDLY Some shy away from swimming pools for fear of their environmental impact, but the industry has worked hard in the past few years to make pools eco-friendly. Today’s pool heaters can be heated almost entirely using solar energy. There are even swimming pools filtered using natural methods—an attached pond does all the work— and other alternatives that can now replace many chemical water treatments. Swimming pool covers also help with water lost in evaporation, saving you time and money. 15. DON’T FORGET WATER FEATURES IN YOUR POOL DESIGN Elegant waterfalls, spouting sconces, bubbling fountains – people love water features almost

Retrofitting can be tricky and sometimes impossible, depending on your swimming pool and what you want done. It also costs more than twice as much to install water features or to remodel the pool design. 16. PLANT WITH PURPOSE Plants are especially important when thinking about your pool design. A swimming pool without landscaping can look bare so consider what you’d like to plant and where. Avoid planting messy trees, palms, gums, sycamores or trees with far-reaching, shallow root systems near your swimming pool, for instance. Instead, go with bushy perennials that don’t grow as tall and can be moved.

HOW TO DO YOUR OWN FLOOR POLISHING AND PREPARATION Flooring is a significant step in any home renovation project. Sunshine Mitre 10 provides the following advice for DIY floor polishing. STEP 1: FLOOR SURFACE PREPARATIONS Once your existing flooring has been removed, it’s time to prep the floor surface. Remove all nails that are protruding above the surface of the flooring, and with a nail punch and hammer, punch each floor fixing nail below the surface of the floor 3-4mm. In rare instances vinyl is laid direct to the flooring with an adhesive. This is very hard to remove and some research will need to be carried out to find a suitable solvent to break down the glue. Otherwise good old elbow grease with a lot of patience and persistence is the answer. Sanding generally does not work on the glue as it only melts and clogs up the paper. Squeaks and loose boards can be re-nailed down into the floor frame with 50mm bullet head nails. If this proves unsuccessful you will need to gain access under the floor. Locate over which floor joist the problem is and how far the loose area is along the floor joist. Cut a piece of 42mm x 19mm pine 300mm longer than the area under
which the problem is, then apply a thick and generous bead of liquid nails to the junction of the joist and flooring and to the flooring and side of the joist. Press the 42mm x 19mm pine firmly into position ensuring that there is an excess of adhesive to both surfaces. Hold the timber firmly against both surfaces and nail the 42mm x 19mm pine to the floor joist with the 50mm nails at 300mm spacings. Allow the adhesive a day or two to set before commencing any sanding. Clear all furniture, furnishings and pictures out of the room to be sanded and thoroughly clean the floor; a vacuum is best for this. And either remove items from built-in furniture or protect them by covering and sealing them with drop sheets and duct tape. STEP 2: GETTING READY TO SAND Cover all power points, ducted floor and ceiling vents and computer outlets with masking tape as the sanding dust is extremely fine and could cause damage later. Thoroughly clean the floor and

finally vacuum the whole area. Familiarise yourself with the hire equipment, and have the hirer go through all procedures of operation and sandpaper changing with you. The drum sander is a heavy machine on wheels or rollers, and depth of sand cut is generally operated by a hand operated winder near the handles. The sanding machine is operated much like a lawn mower; the sanding is done as the machine is pushed forward only. Sanding contact is broken as you walk back to the starting position. STEP 3: THE FIRST SAND, THE ‘ROUGH’ SAND Some first and most important operation tips: do not start the machine with the sandpaper belt
resting on the flooring; do not stop the movement of the machine while the belt is still in contact with the flooring; resist all temptation to speed the job by being heavy-handed with the machine. And wear your earmuffs, safety goggle and dust mask. Also, provide good ventilation to the room by opening fully any windows or doors to external air. The rough sand is done diagonally across the floor from one corner to the other, and continued at 45 degrees to the floorboards. This helps prevent any irregularities or gouges in the flooring boards. Tilt the drum sander so that the sandpaper is not in contact with the floor then turn the machine on. continued over >

DIY // < from previous page Steadily lower the machine while moving forward so the sandpaper makes contact with the floor surface. As you approach the opposite end of the run tilt the machine to lift the sanding drum off the floor – do not stop with the drum still sanding the floor surface. Pull the sander back to the starting position and position the sander so that 70mm or so of the belt overlaps the line already sanded, sand as already instructed and keep going progressively across the floor until completed. The floor may need to be sanded over two or three times, depending on the state of the floor or any other polyethene coatings. There will be an unsanded border around the perimeter of the floor that the drum sander could not reach. This is sanded with a hand-held disc sander fitted with coarse sandpaper by moving the sander in a sideways sweeping manner from left to right. You will be able to complete the floor surface with the disc sander except for the extreme corners, which are cleaned down by using the handheld wood scraper and sandpaper on a sanding block. Carefully vacuum the floor to remove all dust before proceeding any further, taking care not to scratch the floor surface with dirty footwear or any rough treatment.
tip If hiring machinery such as a sander, familiarise yourself with the equipment first. Ask the hire business to take you through the procedures of operation, as well as any safety requirements.
STEP 4: FINISH SANDING Fill all nail holes, splits and knot holes with a water based putty, and allow it to dry. The next sanding is done with medium grade sand paper on the drum sander. This is done in the same manner as earlier mentioned but from now on sand along the grain not diagonally. Again finish the border with the hand-held disc sander, scraper and medium sand paper. The last sand is with fine sand paper fitted to
the drum sander, then the disc sander and fine sand paper finishing the edge border and the scraper and fine sand paper for the corners. The finish will be very fine, almost a polished feeling. STEP 5: APPLYING THE FLOOR FINISH You have the choice of either two-pack polyurethane finish or water based polyurethane which is low odour and fast drying. The waterbased polyurethane is the easiest and quickest
to apply and provides a good durable finish and allows several coats to be applied in one day. Both finishes will cover approximately 12-14 square metres per litre, and a minimum of three coats is recommended. Naturally, the application method will be instructed on the container by the manufacturer and must be followed. As a general rule though, methods of application are by brush or lambswool applicator. Do not use a paint roller as coverage is not as thorough. It is important that the floor surface is thoroughly cleared of all dust particles; this is completed by vacuuming the floor then wiping over with a water moistened cloth to remove any remnant dust.

COURTYARD The Palm Springs-inspired styling continued outdoors. Judge Darren Palmer loved the inclusion of brickwork. “Out here it works so beautifully, so you’ve got that real Miami, very outdoor colour palette of blue and white,” he said. “I like the little touches of pink.”
VERANDAHS Mitch and Mark presented two different spaces for their second- and third-floor verandahs. “Level two comes off a guest bedroom, so it had to tie into that bedroom, but also, because it’s a verandah, I didn’t want to have it as formal as the guest bedroom, I wanted to have it a bit more casual,” Mitch said of level two. At the time, judge Neale Whitaker called their second-floor verandah “an extension of the
home, and I think we are so good at doing that in Australia... We kind of lead the world in terms of our outdoor rooms, and this is a really good example of that.” Featuring a Bangalow woven day bed, Malawi occasional chair and woven coffee and side tables, the verandah was described as a tranquil sanctuary. The added elements of hanging plants and mismatched furniture adds to the charm.

This month I thought it may be interesting for the readers to learn about the interior design of a local yoga, barre and Pilates studio in Buderim. Haven Yoga Studio has been designed beautifully to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Being a multi-discipline studio, it was important to keep the space open for flexibility of use; the design purposely minimises physical barriers allowing clients and
teachers to move freely together through the space. This feeling of openness needed to be balanced with fabrics and finishes to create a warm and inviting environment for the classes that are taught. Privacy from the main street was important so the addition of ceiling-to-floor sheer flax linen curtains softened the space and allowed filtered natural light while providing privacy for clients during class time. The
inclusion of VJ wall panelling also included texture and form to break up the openness and make the studio feel more homely. Natural timbers, woven furnishings and indoor plants break up the white space and create a calm and natural environment for the users. The indoor plants also provide air purification and a pop of colour. The director of the studio, Charmaine Cowling, ensured that the products and services
