fter welcoming a child into the world, and taking a much-needed six months away from my desk, I am excited to be back at the helm of My Renovation. After a pause on publication through COVID, to since celebrating our 100th edition, the past 12 months have been quite the ride. Now is the time to get ahead of autumn trends and welcome in warm earthy colours, a sense of rich beauty and home comforts. Seasonal tones Dulux’s colour forecast for 2021 introduced three new palettes: Retreat, Nourish and Reset. With its uplifting colours and a sense of renewal, the Reset colour palette embraces unified colours and is a perfect fit for autumn decorating. From the pink tones of the colour Treeless to the orange-red Hot Chillie, the selected hues are reminiscent of nature. Layer the look with quilted fabrics, woven materials and furniture which is functional and durable. TIP: Introduce warm welcoming hues of burnt orange, rust, green, pink, cream and mustard.
TREND: Cottagecore Making its debut in 2020, the Cottagecore aesthetic is flowing through to the latest season in all its simplicity. This trend is about reconnecting with nature, adapting to a slower pace of living and celebrating everything pretty. Think floral prints, rustic wooden accents, antique jars and tea sets, whimsical artwork, natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, plus vases overflowing with leaves, twigs and hand-picked flowers. According to the Government of South Australia Good Living website, there are many different types of raingardens, such as above-ground planter boxes, in-ground gardens or even swales, which all aim to collect rainwater. These specially-designed garden beds aim to gather and retain runoff, which is then used to soak your plants. By collecting the rain that runs off your roof, driveway and other hard surfaces and directing it into a raingarden, you create a natural watering system. I have to comment on how beautiful your backyard makeover is (featured in My Renovation, Christmas edition). Amazing changes and the plants look sensational. view, my recommendations to improve the aesthetics would be as follows: Screen and soften: While the fences are a great base colour the next step is to start to layer and soften the yard. Some screen planting along the fences would be great. To reflect the formal lines of the pool a simple hedge would look great, with a single layer of feature planting below to reflect the style of your home. If you have a modern home then some succulents or something structural looking would work
amongst a gravel mulch. If you have more of a traditional home, a flowering feature planting strip in front of the hedge may suit. Shady relief: In our hot climate a backyard is not as appealing if it is without shade. A small feature tree could be a simple solution, or perhaps a vine framed structure to read a book under. There are many options to consider. Create a focal point: With such a beautiful pool you may decide to use this as the focal point. However you may also want to consider a
water feature, sculpture or a fire pit as a feature, then the balance of the design can be inspired from this piece. Keep in style: Ensure your exterior space works with your home. If your home is new or renovated, reference the style and materials from the home in your outside spaces. If you are planning further renovation, make sure that the material choices and style will work with what you have planned for the inside. Function and form: As discussed initially, you will need to refine your functional needs and then create outdoor rooms or spaces to accommodate them. Make sure adjacent spaces are complementary and also ensure good connectivity of spaces. Also, think about ensuring these spaces promote good access. Some compromises may need to be made along
the way to balance function and form of your space. Don’t rush it. A makeover such as this requires careful thought and planning.

white When it comes to style you can’t go past a clean and crisp palette. Choosing the correct shade of white can be challenging. Here, the colour experts from Haymes Paint share their advice.
Warm
Greys
To inject softness into a south-facing room, choose a warm white. Warm whites have yellow, brown or red undertones and project into a room, creating a cosy atmosphere. They also work well with earthy, organic shades, so if your furnishings are of natural and warm hues, your paint probably should be too.
Cool and warm greys are now standards of the neutral palette. There are many ways grey can be used. The result can look casual and relaxed, or chic and elegant. Tip: Just be careful when opting for greys that are pale in tone as they can come up looking like dirt white. A mid-toned grey is still soft and works as a neutral backdrop.
Cool Cool whites have a blue or black base and work well in rooms that get a lot of sun, as they tend to neutralise bright light. There is also a crispness to these whites that suits a home with modern lines and minimal schemes.
Biscuits Biscuits are both warm and cool neutrals that are deeper than whites, being closer to natural stone hues. These paint colours add depth to interiors yet contain a harmonious presence of their own. However, to prevent a dated feel, avoid biscuit-coloured paints with heavy yellow or pink bases.
Choose a biscuit white to create a feature wall that is soft and subtle. When used alongside a traditional warm white, the stone hue will pop nicely.
