warmers If you haven’t yet invested in a fire pit, now is the time to do so.
THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE Your outdoor area can be as simple or as opulent as you choose. The first step is, as always, to set your budget. This will provide guidance on all future decisions – from the build work to the seating. Before you jump ahead to those stages though, you need to find your fire pit. Once you have that baseline, you can build from there. This sunken entertainment area (pictured) comes with a hefty price tag. Of course, the design is beautiful, but it is a significant investment. Some people choose to splurge on the fire pit and reduce spend on furniture. For a less expensive option, and a more rustic aesthetic, use stone blocks, rocks or timber off-cuts for seating.

Safety is the number one priority when it comes to selecting the position of your fire pit. You will want to ensure that the pit is at a safe distance from your home, as well as shrubs and trees. The general rule of thumb is to locate the pit at least three metres from any structure or combustible material. While your landscaping aim is to create a lovely social space to be enjoyed year round, it is also wise to remember that fire pits are prone to making a mess. Keep this in mind to ensure the proximity of seating is at an appropriate distance from the fire.
ASKIN CABINETS
Always use hardwood as it burns hotter and creates less smoke than soft wood. Your wood off cuts should also be stored in a dry location. For safety, you should also always use natural fire wood only.
The Sunshine Coast council permits fires in urban/residential areas. Backyard fires are allowed in urban areas when made in a barbecue, pizza oven or brazier for cooking or heating. The council urges residents to be conscious of their neighbours and the amenity of our neighbourhoods. Green waste, plastics, treated wood or paper must not be burned. Fires must not cause a smoke nuisance.
EXPERT ADVICE Consumer watchdog group Choice reminds homeowners that a fire pit should never be placed directly on grass. Instead, it should be placed on a level, non-combustible surface such as pavers or concrete. Other recommendations include: never leaving the pit unattended while it’s alight and to always keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose close by.
Upon receiving a complaint about a fire in an urban area that does not meet the requirements, penalties may apply.

For homeowners, the desire to renovate and rejuvenate their interiors can become more and more demanding the longer you live in your home. However, sometimes our budget or renovation knowledge isn’t quite as big as our aspirations, and not all changes seem feasible. Fortunately, there are many impactful updates you can make to the existing spaces in your home that can be achieved with very little time, DIY experience and budget. According to Dulux colour and communications manager, Andrea Lucena-Orr, many people assume you need to undergo a big renovation to add ‘wow’ back into your interiors. However, there are easier ways to fall in love with your home all over again.
“A lot can be achieved by just playing with colour and accessories in the existing spaces of your home to give it a new sense of freshness,” Ms Lucena-Orr says. To show you how, Dulux partnered with interior stylist and Greenhouse Interiors founder, Julia Green, to give us an insider look at some of the clever, creative, and inexpensive ways you can instantly refresh the appearance of your home using colours from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast. “Not all renovations start out as a blank canvas, in fact, many people buy renovated homes that are not styled to their liking,” Ms Green says. “That’s where a fresh coat of paint and injection of colour can really come in handy. “It’s one of the best ways to change up the look and feel of your home, without committing to a
full-blown renovation.” Ms Green and her team recently took on one of their biggest projects to date, transforming a 600 square metre heritage warehouse into a retail concept flagship store for Greenhouse Interiors. Designed like a home, the store features a fully functioning kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and lounge space, where every single room is considered and shoppable. “When designing the space, we wanted people to feel like they were being invited into our home, to show them how simple it can be to style and decorate their own rooms using unique homewares and of course, colour,” she explains. In doing so, Ms Green applied colours from the Flourish palette –

one of three palettes from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast – to the store’s display bedroom. “Our aim was to demonstrate how much difference just a touch of colour can make,” she says. “The Flourish palette was perfect for this. It’s sophisticated without any sense of ego or pretension; sometimes earthy, sometimes daring, and easy to style. It’s also highly versatile with hues that are both soft,
beautiful and timeless.” Given the bones of the building were already in place, it was a simple process to refresh the room with a quick application of paint to change the wall colour, using a combination of Dulux Clay Pipe Half, a soft neutral with pink undertones, and Dulux Kenepuru Sound, a deep, rich blue with a beautiful hint of purple. Ms Green complemented these tones by injecting pops of other contrasting colours across the decorations and furnishings. “Bedrooms are often sanctuaries and places of rest; because of this, considered splashes of colour were made in the creation of this space,” she says. The result is a bedroom that, according to Ms Green, feels far more contemporary and edgy, with unexpected combinations of soft clay pink walls and rich, deep claret reds. “When it comes to interior design, I’m a firm believer that opposites attract. “I love nothing more than a daring colour palette with bold, clashing, pops of colour set amongst a gentle backdrop. It creates an element of surprise and evokes a sense of excitement within. “When designing the room, I wanted the space to feel evocative but relaxing – a room
with a contemporary edge that harmoniously incorporates the old with the new.” To complement the wall colours, Ms Green chose decorative items that incorporated colours from the Flourish palette and dotted them throughout. “I see the process of decorating much like a jigsaw puzzle, where all the pieces need to fit to make it work. One misshapen piece will mean it’s not complete,” she says. “So don’t forget, when it comes to the finishing touches, it’s the decorative choices you make that will help the space feel truly cohesive and complete.” When it comes to selecting the right colour to update the home, Ms Green says the most important thing is to not be swayed by others and their opinion. “At the end of the day, the space is yours and only you have to love it. Find a colour that you connect with and that makes you feel good. There’s no science to it, it’s about what makes you happy.” Adding colour to your home can be transformative, so don’t be afraid to experiment and explore. It may not always work out the first time, but it’s worth persisting until you achieve the perfect balance, she adds.
JULIA GREEN’S STYLING TIPS • Colour evokes emotions, so it’s best to consider how certain hues make you feel – while you may love a bold red, living with a whole room of it may be overwhelming. The good news about paint is, if you don’t love it, you can always paint over it. If in doubt, ask a friend or get a second opinion from a trade specialist – they are there to help. • Don’t be afraid to mix the old with the new and use bolder hues as accents rather than solid colours enmass to avoid being too overpowering. • When decorating, always start with a blank canvas and add one piece at a time to ensure the balance is right. Sometimes how you edit your space can be more important than adding the homewares itself, so go slow. • Purchase Dulux A4 swatches, Colour stickers or sample pots from your local paint shop to accurately test the colours around the room and view at different times of the day. That way, you’ll feel assured you’ve selected a colour you’ll love.

PAVE THE WAY Create your own stylish entryway path. WHAT YOU WILL NEED • Railway sleepers • Drop saw • Measuring tape • Pencil • Shovel • Level • Thick bristle paint brush • Scrubbing brush • Cabot’s New Timber Prep • Stain of choice (we opted for Cabot’s Aquadeck Natural Exterior Decking Oil • Landscaping rocks. We used a ‘coastal’ mix STEP ONE Prepare the sleepers using the timber prep. Allow to dry thoroughly. STEP TWO Stain the sleepers. Be sure to apply a second coat after giving the first a chance to settle and dry for at least an hour. Once complete, we recommend allowing the sleepers a solid few hours to dry.
STEP THREE Determine the desired length for your steps. We chose to divide each sleeper in two. Measure up and mark with a pencil and then use the drop saw to cut through the sleepers. STEP FOUR It’s time to prepare the area and dig! Lay the sleepers in your chosen pattern and with your preferred spacing. We allowed 18 centimetres between each step. Use the level to ensure each sleeper is as flat as possible. STEP FIVE Shovel in the rocks. Make sure they are compact particularly around each sleeper to provide adequate support. STEP SIX Hose down the area and then flatten any rock areas that require levelling.

2. MASK Use the masking tape to mask off the ceiling, cupboards and splashbacks. Cover the taps, sink, benchtop and cupboards to avoid getting drips or spatter on them. 3. CUT IN Now that your walls are prepared, and you’ve masked off cupboards and covered your hardware and benchtops, it’s time to
cut in. Cutting in means that you use a paintbrush for spots that you can’t reach with a paint roller. Firstly, remember to mix the paint with a stirrer in a circular lifting motion before you begin. Cut in with a brush around edges and corners where the roller can’t reach. Work in sections and retain a wet edge so the rolled paint blends in with the brushed edges. 4. PAINT Load roller with an even amount of paint. Start at the edge and roll in an overlapping ‘W’ across the wall to ensure even distribution. Once the section is covered and the paint is still wet, lay off with the unloaded roller.

The best time to start your pool project is actually in winter so that you can ensure you have enough time to have it ready by next summer. Hopefully our pool renovation story this month provides ideas and inspiration for your new pool or pool makeover. Whenever I carry out a consultation with a client who is looking to build a pool, I always mention that your pool will be the most expensive water feature you ever install. Many people think about their pool area as a functional space for swimming, having fun and relaxing. We need to remember when designing a pool area that if we can make it double as an impressive

Before water feature, we can gain enjoyment from it all year round and every time we view the space. As you will see in the before photos, our side yard appeared small. It wasn’t usable and certainly not the type of space you want to stay in for long. This yard connects from the entry to the residence and also travels along the side of the property and connects to the backyard. Our backyard is full of mature hoop pine trees and it’s also quite steep which made it an unrealistic location for a swimming pool. While the side yard appeared to be quite narrow and unusable,

once we put pen to paper and measured some critical dimensions and heights, we realised it was the perfect space for a pool. The aspect is north-facing and it is in full sun for almost a whole day. This is great as it is nature’s way of warming the pool without the bills that come with electric or gas heating. There are also very few trees that drop leaves nearby which means the pool does not get messy easily and is quite low-maintenance. The pool area is right alongside our entry stairs that connect to our entertaining verandah zone, it is well-placed from a functional perspective. All of these elements are important to consider when doing the initial site planning for your pool placement. Once we decided on the general area for the pool zone, we needed to design access ways and lounging areas, while also maximising the size of the actual pool. We decided to have a dual-gate arrangement so it was necessary to walk through the pool area
to get from the front to the backyard. While this may be inconvenient at times, it meant we could use the entire width from our property boundary to the side of the house for the pool zone. The pool area was on a slight slope so a concrete pool worked best as it was half in ground and half out of the ground. Decking
at either end of the pool was the most suitable solution for the lounging areas, however we were not keen to be sanding and staining decks every six months to keep them in good condition so we shopped around for a composite decking material continued over>

tiled with a beautiful stone-look porcelain tile, which referenced the sandstone used in our front facade and entry works. Being porcelain means the tile is an extremely low-maintenance option and far more cost-effective than using real stone. Glass pool fencing at either end enabled us to make the space feel unrestricted however we needed a splash proof 1800mm high fence along our side boundary for pool regulations. It was difficult to access this area as a neighbouring property has a mature vine frame inside its boundary we wanted to retain. We discovered a fantastic DIY double-lapped style fence system which we pre-painted prior to construction and assembled from only one side. This system from Dyna Group worked extremely well in our situation and also looks quite high-end with a double lap and cap style. Feature subtropical landscaping softened and framed the space, breaking up the fences and screening under the house while providing a cooling effect in the summer. We wanted the space to be a feature at night time also, so we installed

DIY up-lights, which literally took around 10 minutes to fit off, install and plug-in. These up-lights provide a soft glow through the garden areas, creating a magical space in the evenings. We also installed some LED spotlights for entertaining and parties at night. To finish off the space we furnished the pool area with two generous market umbrellas and luxe resort-style seating. The matching Malibu lounges and side table fit perfectly at the far end of the pool. The timber and linen-look finishes work well with the stone-look tiles and walnut decking. Feature Warlukurlangu cushions were a must. The colour and style were a perfect fit with the island-inspired palette and the best part is that sales from this range directly benefit the artist and their communities in the Northern Territory. A single wicker accent armchair located at the opposite end of the pool is both functional and further references our nod to a contemporary British Colonial coastal home style.

TAKE A LOOK: NATION’S BEST A multimillion-dollar Sunshine Coast home draped in lush plants and with a sparkling pool submerged in the middle has been named Australia’s best. The architecturally designed concrete and timber property brings the “jungle” to riverside living, with masses of greenery tumbling over the building’s angular lines. Among the most unique features of the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home (which
also has two powder rooms) are the windowframed pool in the courtyard and luxurious glass-encased wine cellar. The property on Witta Circle in Noosa was named Australian Home of the Year at the 2022 HIA-CSR National Housing Awards. It also won the national Custom Built Home title. Last year the home was awarded the Sunshine Coast and Queensland titles. The skilful design and construction, which connects the natural and built environments, was built by Sunshine Coast-based company JW Constructions. The holiday home was designed by Brisbane firm Lockyer Architects and the landscaping was completed by the Conlon Group. The home centres on biophilic design principles bridging the gap between the indoor and outdoor environments. The combination of board-formed concrete paired with warm wood-grained accents creates an inviting interior. Outside, the natural greenery that drapes from the upper-level gardens softens the angular lines of the home. At its heart, the central courtyard and swimming pool evoke a sense of tranquillity.
