CALMING OUTLOOK

As the world’s biggest colour houses revealed their forecasts for 2026, one thing was certain – we’re entering a year shaped by softness, serenity and connection. From Pantone’s contemplative white to Dulux’s warm, earth-driven palettes, the mood for the year ahead is grounded.

A softer direction

If last year leaned into bold expression, 2026 is taking a quieter, more reflective path. According to the Pantone Color Institute, the hue defining the year is Cloud Dancer 11-4201 – a billowy, lofty white chosen for its peacefulness and sense of clarity. Pantone’s executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, says it arrives at exactly the right moment. “At this time of transformation, when we are reimagining our future and our place in the world, Pantone 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is a discrete white hue offering a promise of clarity,” she says. For Australian homes – where natural light, coastal breezes and relaxed living are in focus – it’s a colour that slips easily into existing interiors. Think whitewashed walls, soft linen, textural ceramics and a shift toward a more pared-back palette.

Dulux leads with warmth

While Pantone sets the global tone, Dulux offers a distinctly Australian perspective with its 2026 Colour Forecast, and the theme is clear: grounding, warm and emotional reconnection.

Curated into three palettes – Ethereal, Elemental and Evoke – this year’s forecast champions warm earth-based neutrals, rich burnt oranges, caramels and greens such as sage, moss and spearmint. Soft pinks and vintage rose tones, pastels and muted berry shades also feature.

Led by the Dulux colour team, comprising of colour and design manager Lauren Treloar and colour and communications manager Andrea LucenaOrr, the annual Dulux Colour Forecast is grounded in extensive, yearround research into global and local trends set to shape Australian interior design and the way we live. Since its inception in 1999, the forecast has become a trusted guide for designers, architects and homeowners alike.

“In times of uncertainty, including today’s cost-of-living pressures and geopolitical unrest, consumers tend to gravitate toward stability in design,” Andrea says. “That’s why we’re seeing a continued preference for warm, comforting colours in this year’s palettes. Colour has the power to lift spirits, offer emotional reassurance and bring a sense of calm into our homes.”

“Australians are feeling digitally overwhelmed. There’s a strong shift towards emotional reconnection – with ourselves, with others and with nature. This translates into a need for warm, calming interiors that encourage reflection and joy.”

“Among the most notable changes this year is the rising dominance of spearmint green, complemented by soft earthy pinks that pair beautifully with browns and burgundies. These trends mirror our collective desire for grounding and positivity. In contrast, brighter colours are used sparingly to bring personality and optimism into spaces.”

Dulux Ethereal

Dulux Ethereal is a soft, whimsical palette designed to soothe and uplift, blending gentle greens, mauves and blush tones that feel serene, romantic and quietly luxurious. Inspired by nature, fantasy and restorative rituals, it encourages emotional reconnection and offers a calm escape from a fast-moving world. With pastel hues, plush textures and subtle light-reflective finishes, Ethereal creates a dreamy, layered look that feels both expressive and inviting.

Dulux Evoke is a bold, nostalgic palette that blends emotional warmth with expressive, character-rich colour, inspired by maximalism, ‘nana chic’ and the charm of cherished, repurposed pieces. Deep blush pinks, burnt oranges and warm golds are layered with rich purples and reds to create personality, depth and a sense of storytelling. With vintage materials, handcrafted details and eclectic styling, Evoke celebrates individuality and the beauty of collected, lived-in spaces.

Dulux Elemental

Dulux Elemental is a calm, grounded palette inspired by slow living and purposeful simplicity, offering a steady counterbalance to modern overstimulation. Built around warm whites, golden browns and layered greys, it creates a timeless, quietly confident look with gentle depth and structure. Durable materials like linen, concrete and polished stone reinforce its practical beauty, softened by warm tones and subtle metallic accents.

How to bring the 2026 palette home

With this year’s colours steering us toward calm, the design direction for the coming year centres on softness, comfort and thoughtful layering. Start with Cloud Dancer as your base: a warm, quiet white that refreshes walls, trims or cabinetry without overpowering the space. Introduce those softer hues through textiles and accents – sage cushions, burnt-orange throws, rose-toned ceramics or a spearmint feature wall. This combination creates a home that feels both serene and grounded.

Texture will be key in 2026. Pair gentle colours with boucle upholstery, ribbed timber, rattan lighting or organic stone. The combination of matte and glossy surfaces helps keep a soft palette interesting.

Simple DIY projects for impact

1. Build a batten feature wall –

Using MDF battens, create vertical or geometric lines across a section of wall. Paint in a tone similar to Cloud Dancer for a sleek, textural finish.

2. Upcycle side tables with textured paint – Use a Moroccan-inspired textured paint or chalk paint to revive an old bedside or coffee table. Choose a soft pink, sage or warm caramel to tie into the forecasts.

3. Create a spearmint reading nook – As spearmint rises in popularity, try painting a small corner or alcove in this gentle hue. Add a cosy chair and linen throw.

4. Make your own rose-toned table centrepiece – Repurpose jars or bowls with a wash of vintage rose acrylic paint. Paired with Cloud Dancer-inspired linens, it creates a gentle, modern look for summer dining.

WALLPAPERING YOUR HALLWAY

The hallway serves as the initial point of contact for visitors to your home, offering an opportunity to establish an immediate and lasting impression. Applying wallpaper in the hallway provides an opportunity to reflect your personal character and style, ensuring alignment with the overall aesthetic of the home. Here, the expert team from Ivory T Wallpaper Australia share their tips. Visit wallpaperaustralia.com.au.

DESIGN TIPS

1. It is important to carefully assess the dimensions of the hallway (including both width and height) as these measurements are essential for determining the most appropriate wallpaper style and colour.

2. In narrow or dimly lit hallways, it is advisable to use lightcoloured wallpapers that feature an open background or a subtle sheen. These elements help reflect light, thereby enhancing the sense of openness and making the area feel more inviting.

3. Textured wallpapers introduce depth and a refined aesthetic that paint alone cannot achieve. They establish a neutral backdrop, enabling the addition of artwork, photographs and other decorative elements.

4. For those seeking a cosy or a more dramatic atmosphere in their hallway, consider dark or vibrant wallpapers. It is important to note that such

choices will make the space appear smaller and more enclosed, particularly in areas with limited natural light or low illumination.

5. To enhance a long hallway, consider applying wallpaper to a single accent wall. While it is possible to wallpaper both walls, this approach is recommended only if the wallpaper features neutral colours or subtle patterns. Using bold and vibrant designs on both walls will overpower the space and create a visually narrower effect.

6. It is advisable to avoid bold, large-scale patterns in narrow hallways, as highly detailed florals, damasks, or geometric designs may create a sense of chaos and limit visual space. Opting for neutral tones can effectively balance these design choices and contribute to a more open and refined atmosphere.

7. Vertical stripes can make a hallway’s ceiling appear higher, and horizontal stripes can

make a space feel wider.

8. Hallways can be a high-traffic area; therefore, it is advisable to select a durable wallpaper, such as vinyl or vinyl-coated options. Vinyl wallpapers are especially suitable as they offer greater ease of cleaning compared to non-woven wallpapers.

9. For narrow hallways, select a design featuring a small- to mid-scale pattern, a subtle motif, or a tone-on-tone effect. These options can help ensure the space remains visually balanced and not overwhelming.

10. If your hallway is spacious, you have greater flexibility in your design options. Mid to large-scale patterns and increased use of colour can be successfully incorporated. In some cases, hallways may be sufficiently large enough to accommodate a wall mural. However, it remains advisable to choose neutral colours and understated designs for an elegant effect.

11. Wallcoverings that feature

pearlescent finishes or glass bead accents effectively reflect light, creating a more open atmosphere and feel in narrow areas.

A word about chair rail/ wainscoting…

If you are uncertain about applying wallpaper to an entire wall, consider alternatives such as wainscoting or installing a chair rail. These options can enhance both the aesthetic of the space and the impact of the wallpaper.

When choosing a wallpaper option, take into account the dimensions of your hallway and whether the wallpaper will be installed above or below the chair rail.

Select a wallpaper that features a pattern or texture that harmonises with your wainscoting.

Ensure that the colours and tones of the wallpaper situated above or below the chair rail contribute to a cohesive aesthetic, avoiding any sense of visual overwhelm.

THE CLOUD DANCER EFFECT

Pantone’s highly coveted Color of the Year is easy to incorporate into your space. Cloud Dancer – a soft natural white that represents a fresh start in a chaotic world – can be used as a base (think walls, floors, major furnishings), as well as in your accent pieces.

Stockists

1. The Tarma accent chair from Domayne, Maroochydore Homemaker Centre is surprisingly affordable considering its style and quality. Soft boucle fabric upholstery pairs with a timber frame to create a timeless and elegant piece for your home. 2. Haymes Paint’s Crushed Paper is a popular white paint option that has a creamy, warmth that echoes the balanced, soft white of Cloud Dancer. It still has a slight brightness to it without feeling icy. Visit haymespaint. com.au. 3. The elegant Telbix Hulong table lamp demonstrates the beautiful matching of white and deep blue tones. Available from Discount Lighting and Fans, Warana. 4. Décor accents such as these planters from Coastal Drift Home, Caloundra blend the combination of blue and white well and bring colour and balance to your home. 5. Featuring a neutral background and touches of yellow, green and blue, the classic oil painting style of the Junee canvas will bring a pop of colour to your space. It’s from Coast Store, Cotton Tree.

IDEAS THAT WILL LAST

Renovating in 2026 isn’t about chasing bold statements or ripping everything out for the sake of it. The shift is toward homes that feel layered, flexible and genuinely lived in. Whether you’re planning a full-scale reno or working room by room, these 2026 trends are practical and achievable.

LIGHTING THAT WORKS HARDER

Single overhead lights are officially outdated. In 2026, lighting is layered just like interiors. Pendant lighting is no longer limited to one perfect fixture. Instead, designers are mixing sizes, heights and finishes to create visual interest.

Over kitchen islands, this might mean two smaller pendants instead of one large statement. In living areas, pendants are paired with wall sconces and lamps to soften the space and create zones.

DIY tip: If rewiring isn’t on the cards, focus on plug-in wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps. Swapping out pendant shades is also a simple upgrade that can dramatically change the feel of a room.

SUSTAINABLE CHOICES THAT FEEL NATURAL

Sustainability in 2026 is less about buzzwords and more about longevity. Durable materials, timeless layouts and quality finishes are prioritised over fast trends. Reusing what you can, such as existing cabinetry, timber floors and structural elements, is cost-effective and environmentally sensible.

DIY tip: Before replacing, consider refinishing. Painting cabinetry, sanding timber floors, or updating benchtops can extend the life of what you already have while aligning with current trends.

DIY-FRIENDLY UPGRADES THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT

One of the most practical renovation trends of 2026 is the focus on upgrades that homeowners can tackle themselves, or in stages. Paint continues to be the most powerful tool. Soft neutrals, earthy tones and gentle texture fi nishes can completely change a space. Hardware upgrades — handles, taps, switches — are another highimpact, low-effort update.

DIY tip: Stick to one metal fi nish per room to keep things cohesive. Consistency instantly elevates even budget-friendly choices.

WARM MATERIALS WITH A NATURAL EDGE

Cold, glossy finishes are giving way to warmer, tactile materials. Timber, stone, clay, brushed metals and handmade tiles are everywhere in modern renovations and they’re being used in ways that feel relaxed rather than precious.

Stone doesn’t need to be polished. Timber doesn’t need to match perfectly. Variation and imperfection are part of the appeal, creating spaces that feel welcoming and lived-in.

DIY tip: Introduce warmth with timber shelving, a stonelook splashback, or by replacing chrome fittings with brushed brass or aged bronze. These are small upgrades that instantly soften a space.

ROOMS THAT MULTI-TASK

Homes are working harder than ever, and renovations are responding accordingly. Laundries double as mudrooms. Guest rooms double as home offices. Kitchens include tucked-away study nooks or appliance cupboards to reduce visual clutter. The key is smart planning rather than extra square metres. Storage is integrated, joinery is flexible and furniture choices are intentional.

DIY tip: Look at how your rooms are actually used day to day. Could a hallway wall become storage? Could open shelving replace upper cabinetry? Sometimes the most effective changes are about rethinking layout rather than rebuilding.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TIMBER FLOOR

Transforming houses into dream homes

Solid or engineered? That is the question many renovators face when it comes to selecting the right option for their home. Here, the expert team at Queensland Timber Flooring, Maroochydore share their insights to help you make an informed decision. Visit queenslandtimberflooring.com.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

While both options offer the natural warmth and timeless appeal of timber, solid and engineered floors are built quite differently. Solid timber flooring is exactly that – one continuous piece of hardwood from top to bottom. Engineered flooring, on the other hand, features a sturdy ply base with a layer of solid timber (known as the lamella) on top. Both are available in a range of widths and thickness, so the choice often comes down to lifestyle, installation needs and the look you’re hoping to achieve.

WHY CHOOSE SOLID TIMBER?

Solid timber remains the classic choice for homeowners who love

Pictured is the engineered Genuine Oak range from Queensland Timber Flooring

longevity and a premium finish. Because each board is cut from a single species of hardwood, the lengths tend to be more random and often longer, creating a seamless visual flow across a room. Once installed, solid timber must be sanded and polished on site – a step that takes time but delivers a beautifully tailored finish. When properly maintained, solid timber can last for generations, thanks to its strength and ability to be refinished multiple times.

WHY CHOOSE ENGINEERED TIMBER?

Engineered boards have risen sharply in popularity, particularly for renovations. Because they are pre-finished, they can be laid quickly and walked on almost immediately. In most cases, furniture can be moved back in the next day, making them ideal for homeowners wanting minimal disruption. While

engineered boards typically come in maximum lengths of around two metres, they still deliver the authentic look and feel of real timber. Their layered construction also provides stability, which can be beneficial in homes that may be prone to environmental changes and because the floors are glued down, they can be resurfaced in the future, ensuring they last a lifetime.

CARING FOR YOUR NEW FLOOR

No matter which timber option you choose, proper care will help protect its beauty for decades. The golden rules: use a pHneutral cleaner, mop with a damp, not wet, mop and sweep regularly with a modacrylic dust broom to remove grit before it causes scratches. With routine care, your timber floor will continue to enhance

your home’s character, warmth and value well into the future.

WHICH OPTION SUITS?

Both solid and engineered timber floors offer durability, warmth, easy maintenance and the ability to refresh your surface over time. Ultimately, your decision will come down to how you live, how quickly you need the space ready and the style you’re aiming for.

Pool feature

Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations managing director Sean Lynch says it’s a smart idea to plan your pool landscaping from the start of your project. Visit poolfab.com.au.

POOL LANDSCAPING AND ITS BENEFITS

It’s a great asset to maintain a pool in your backyard, especially during the warmer months, when having a place to cool off nearby can be essential. Therefore, it makes sense to plan, to get the most out of what you’ve invested in home pool facilities because they can be expensive to build and maintain. Enhancing the area around your pool is also one way to get the most use out of it.

Types of swimming pool landscaping

The term landscaping itself is defined as the process of improving the aesthetic appeal of a yard or other area of land by changing the existing design. In other words, landscaping can be pretty much anything you do to decorate your yard.

Pool landscaping can be customised to meet your preferences, requirements, and of certainty, your budget, just like the rest of your yard’s landscaping.

Hardscaping and softscaping are the two primary categories of landscaping. While softscaping deals with the installation and maintenance of plants, hardscaping includes artificial elements. These two forms of landscaping have various functions…

Hardscaping

Your backyard or pool area can get a complete makeover thanks to hardscaping. For instance, the addition of a patio can set the scene for the ideal backyard barbecue with close companions, it can also be a location for the ideal morning coffee with a view, or basically a great place for changing out of wet clothes when heading out of your concrete pool, or fibreglass pool.

Also, to help you create the ideal getaway in the comfort of your own home, paths, walkways and steps can be added throughout your backyard. In addition, for your

backyard or pool area, hardscaping is a great investment because it will last for many years without the added stress of routine maintenance.

Softscaping

Softscape refers to the horticultural components of your backyard, whereas hardscape typically refers to hard concrete parts of landscaping. The addition of flowers, trees, shrubs and more establish a flawless garden environment around your backyard or pool area. You can create tropical surroundings around your pool by carefully selecting the plants that you include in your landscape. Although softscape is a lovely addition to your pool area and backyard, there are a few things to consider before making a horticulture purchase.

Why should you consider pool landscaping?

For you to use and enjoy your pool as much as possible, pool landscaping is a wise investment. The advantages of pool landscaping are infinite. Here are just a few advantages

your backyard is likely to experience if you’re looking for pool ideas, and you wondering if pool landscaping is the right choice for your home.

1. Protects you from direct sunlight Shade is an advantage of landscaping that may not be as frequently thought about. A swimming pool is essentially a necessity if you want to appreciate the warmer months.

However, on regular occasions, not even cool water can make an afternoon spent outside bearable. Therefore, to ensure that a cool, pleasant area is always accessible, adding vegetation to your backyard is a good idea in helping to create shaded areas close to your pool.

You can maximise your investment in a swimming pool by designing shaded areas because you’ll be much more likely to use it throughout the summer if you can occasionally escape the sun.

2. Greatly enhances your backyard aesthetics Beautification is one of the landscaping’s main advantages.

You can make your yard more appealing by doing so, this will encourage you to spend more time outside. You can customise this ambience to your preferences, whether you want to experience swimming in a tropical oasis or cruising through a classic garden setting. Also, you can create this atmosphere in your backyard by making it more attractive, allowing you to take full advantage of your pool area, and backyard at all times.

3. Provides greater levels of privacy

The increased privacy that comes with the addition of buildings and vegetation is one of the biggest advantages of landscaping your pool and your backyard in general. One of the most significant benefits of owning a pool for many pool owners is the freedom from having to share it with neighbours if they don’t want to.

< from previous page

You and your fellow guests are welcome to use the pool and you can enjoy anonymity as you float within the water in your area. However, if you reside in a neighbourhood with close-knit homes, any fantasies of having a private pool may be quickly dashed.

4) Makes your pool the centrepiece Making the most of your pool construction investment in every way is crucial because it can be a significant time and financial commitment. A well-designed pool can be a stunning addition to your yard in addition to being a great place to cool off and have fun in the sun.

A unique way to set up your pool so that the sparkling blue water is enveloped by plants, gazebos and other ornamentation of your choice is by adding landscaping to your yard. Your backyard will now have a centralised focal point, greatly enhancing its aesthetic appeal and monetary value.

Top tips!

• The best plant species to use will depend on your region’s climate, but even pool owners in regions of the country that require more robust plants can achieve the same visual appeal with ferns, hostas and hibiscus. Some palms can even withstand sub-zero temperatures.

• For the most custom appearance, rock can be integrated directly into the design of the pool during construction, but even if you are remodelling your landscaping to a present pool, you can tap into this idea with both real or synthetic boulders, including some that offer built-in speakers, to really enhance your pool’s landscaping.

• Give your softscaping a focal point with eye-catching planters that are integrated right into your landscaping. Built-in planters are a great way to show off blooming flowers, shrubs, or even trees and they instantly up the ‘wow’ factor of your pool landscaping.

COMMERCIAL PROJECTS

From home-cleaning robots to helpful holograms and smartphones that fold in three, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has again set the agenda for the year in technology.

Predictably, artificial intelligence dominated many of the announcements, although the software was often given a more practical role in consumers’ lives.

While AI was added to the NuraLogix Longevity Mirror and Withings Body Scan 2 scale to assess users’ health, for example, the technology also featured in a swathe of home appliances to automate chores.

Samsung announced a partnership with Google to add Gemini AI to a smart fridge and wine cellar, which Samsung Australia audiovisual director Simon Howe says could change the way consumers purchase groceries.

“In 2025, AI Vision could recognise up to 37 foods. With Gemini, AI Vision can recognise thousands of ingredients, including fresh, packaged and self-

labelled foods, with higher accuracy,” he says.

“AI Vision with Gemini can automatically generate a detailed food list, making it far easier for users to keep track of what food they have, what ingredients need to be used based on expiry dates and what should be replenished.”

Rival LG also made AI announcements for its home products, revealing a humanoid robot named CLOiD that connects to and works with smart appliances.

The company calls its vision “zero labour home” and chief executive Lyu Jaecheol says the use of AI-powered robotics could “set a new standard for future home life”.

Other technologies unveiled at CES included more powerful laptop chips, more healthtracking devices and more autonomous vehicle plans.

Switchbot’s home helper is powered by AI and a camera, moves on wheels like a robotic vacuum and is programmed to help with cooking and cleaning.

A demonstration showed the robot collecting dirty laundry and putting it in a washing machine, albeit slowly, and it’s due to launch in 2026 for less than $US10,000 ($A14,900).

LG CLOiD

The South Korean firm showed off its take on an artificially intelligent home at CES in a 163-centimetre tall humanoid robot named CLOiD.

It connects to appliances such as fridges, washing machines and ovens to complete chores.

Testing on the robot is expected to begin in 2027.

Treat the laundry like any other room, not just a work zone. A timber bench, woven basket or ceramic jar helps softens the space, while open shelving gives everyday items a place to look intentional rather than hidden away. Layered interiors are about depth, not excess. Mix materials and finishes – timber with stone, linen against ceramics – and build the room slowly rather than all at once. Vary heights, textures and tones, then leave space between pieces so each layer has room to breathe.
