elcome to the first edition of My Renovation for 2022. There is no escaping that the start of this new year has brought further uncertainty due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases. With thousands of people deemed close contacts and forced into isolation, industry experts have predicted that the increased interest in home renovation projects will continue. In fact, the past 12 months have resulted in a 37.5 per cent increase on the value of renovations approved within Australia, with numbers predicted to remain steady. To help kickstart your project, we have researched the biggest renovation trends of 2022. Turn to page six to find out more. of 2022 As home renovation spend continues to rise, we take a look at the trends that will be at the forefront of the industry during the next 12 months.

THE HOME OFFICE As a result of COVID and the subsequent changes to our work routine, office spaces within the home continue to grow in popularity. Here are our five tips to create a stylish, functional office... 1. The expert team at Haymes Paint recommend injecting some fun and colour into your home office. If you have some paint lying around that you can use, create a feature wall. Or, research the psychology behind colour to find a hue that is calming and motivating, such as blue tones. 2. Introduce some personality. Deck your walls with photos, textures and colours that make you feel inspired and happy. Do flowers make you smile? Choose a pretty faux

bouquet to have on display. Anything that makes you feel great is a good choice for your office. 3. Place your desk in a space that stimulates the mind. If you have a window, take advantage of the natural light and outlook and angle your desk towards that. 4. Consider your workflow and what you need to function well, whether that be shelves, trays or a pen holder. Do you work better with a monitor propped to a certain height? Test every aspect to ensure comfort. This will help motivate you to work. 5. Invest in key pieces such as a desk and chair. Think about ergonomics and be sure to try your office furniture before you buy.

GREENING UP The pandemic has shone a spotlight on the importance of introducing our natural environment into the home environment with an interest in outdoor living, natural lighting and plants continuing to grow. While large decks and poolside entertaining areas are favourites, a comfortable outdoor living space can be as simple as renovating or refreshing a front patio or small courtyard. At the end of the day, it comes down to budget, space and personal choice. The key is to incorporate natural materials, which bring a sense of relaxation and escapism. Invest in stone, potted plants, hedges, water features and timber, rattan or bamboo design elements.

CREATIVE SPACE If there is one positive that COVID has brought, it has given people an opportunity to reassess their work-life situation. MEASUREMENT When starting a tiling project, it’s important to get your calculations right. Begin by drawing up the space with a pen and paper and use that as a guide to determine what area of the room you want to tile. For a splashback, measure the length of the wall up and down, followed by the width left to right. Next, multiply the length and width measurements to calculate the total square meterage. Always allow for more tiles – multiply your square meterage by 15 per cent to determine how many tiles you should buy.

PROJECT Shannon’s father’s old workshop was a strong influence on her growing up and when he retired Shannon and her mother Wynne decided to convert the workshop into their home. Shannon’s home is one of the two light and bright apartments that Tim Jackson from

Jackson Clements Burrows Architects and interior designer Hamish Guthrie (Shannon’s then-husband) of Hecker Guthrie helped transform. Their plan was to have two interconnected apartments, they would be separate but accessible through external walkways. The great news was that the council approved the project, however life and a lack of funds got in the way of starting the renovation. Still holding onto their dream home plans, Shannon and her mum finally got to start the project in 2017. For Shannon it was really important having her mum and her mum’s partner Danny Rae, who was also the project builder, around for her young daughters Sybil and Jos when she couldn’t be. As a working mum family close by was a priority.

Holding on to the heritage elements of the workshop building was a big part of the design plans, the distinctive brick being one of those. “We created what I describe as a two-storey extrusion, which echoes the garage’s original pitched roof,” Shannon says. Another key element of the build for both apartments was natural light. Shannon is a

strong believer in an airy and bright home that still feels light in the middle of winter, which is why Haymes colour White Marble complements the space so perfectly. Shannon’s top floor apartment lets in ample amounts of light due to the large glass wall. The bonus of such a glass wall is the beautiful treetop city vistas.

Wynne’s ground floor apartment also has a great connection to the outside, with views of a park opposite the house. The use of White Marble paired with the soft and eloquent tones of the subtle pinks, green and a hint of blue just makes this space feel like the perfect combination to create an area that allows the family to just breathe. Once the building was complete it was time to start work on the interiors with Hamish Guthrie and his business partner Paul Hecker. The palette for the interiors was inspired by nature. By pairing blonde timber furniture with soft linens and moss-green fabrics like the rug, it creates natural light without the glare. Natural light is the hero here and the soft tones brought in through little accents like the green of the rug make the connection to the outside space effortless. The additions of leather, linen and rattan complement Shannon’s collection of handmade ceramics effortlessly. Before Shannon was a photographer, she studied fine arts with a focus on ceramics. It definitely shows in her choices of materials that are raw and have a sense of tactile sensibility. Lots of Shannon’s design choices were instinctive and motivated by her wish to

memories alive. When you have a smaller space and want to make a big impact using greenery against grey makes a really great statement and creates a dynamic area.

FINISHED PRODUCT Once the build was finished it was time for Shannon to do her thing and photograph her new home. Given this is what she does each and every day you’d figure it would be a walk in the park, however Shannon struggled to capture her own space. “I am used to appreciating another person’s taste and style and communicating that in images, but trying to capture my own space made me question everything.”
