his month, it’s our pleasure to share with you some of the stunning building and design work happening here on the Sunshine Coast via the HIA-Truecore Steel Awards for our local area. Wait until you see the overall winner, a spectacular home in the pea-green hills of Maleny. It really has been designed with the surroundings in mind. If you’ve been watching The Block, you’ll recognise Jimmy and Tam from Brisbane and Luke and Jasmin from WA. On the popular Channel Nine show, the two couples tied in the contest for best master ensuite. Check out their results on pages 14 and 15 . Cassandra Fenaughty shares a great backyard redesign with us and we offer some tips on prepping your yard for summer. TROPICAL DELIGHT The HIA Outdoor Project Award went to Contemporary Landscaping for turning an unused, dated courtyard into a low-maintenance tropical haven. This recently renovated terrace home in Noosa needed a serious update of its 64-square metre courtyard. The team at Contemporary Landscaping redesigned the space to include a plunge pool and stone feature wall with stainless steel waterspouts, an outdoor stainless steel shower, tropical plantings and a barbecue area. One of the challenges was the excavation of the plunge pool due to very sandy soil and the pool’s location being close to existing block rendered walls. They had to shore up the pool as they dug so as to avoid cave-ins. The plumbing ran through where the new pool is located, so it needed to be relocated. Also needing a relocation was the front gate, where they had to remove a section of the wall, build a new section of wall and refit a new powder-coated gate. We think they did a great job – what you do think?

bathrooms FROM THE BLOCK Jimmy and Tam from Brisbane tied with Luke and Jasmin from Western Australia to win the Master Ensuite Bathroom room reveal for Channel Nine’s The Block 2020. Which one is your favourite?
Jimmy & Tam As seen on The Block on Sunday, September 20, Jimmy and Tam spent $18,945 to renovate the master ensuite for House No 5, a 1950s home. Jimmy and Tam made some huge planning changes after criticism the previous week. Their powder room moved, which enabled them to extend their walk-in robe and build a separate entrance into their master ensuite bathroom.
The judges were impressed. Judge Neale Whitaker noticed there was no bath but understood because of the floor size. The judges advised they must have a bath upstairs because of this. All three loved the choices Jimmy and Tam made with their colour palette, pink and terrazzo tiles and the black vanity. The judges said the room made their hearts sing.

Luke & Jasmin Luke and Jasmin spent $24,487 to renovate the master ensuite of House No 4, a home from the 1910s. They had to deal with the first ever curved wall in a bathroom on The Block and judges Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer said the same thing: “What?” Shaynna thought the wall, with the circular skylight was literally heaven. She and Darren loved the black bath. All three judges thought
the bathroom was modern, but a nod to the period. Interesting thoughts, as this week Jasmin and Luke were open about how they were going for the perfect bathroom they wanted to deliver, and not thinking of the era too much. The only issue they had was the vanity could have been longer and the toilet roll was in the wrong position.

Mix the wood cleaner with water and use the broom to give the timber a scrub, then rinse with the pressure cleaner. Once the deck is dry, check the weather to make sure it won’t rain for a few days and then get set to start painting. Give the tin a good stir then pour the oil or stain into the tray. You can use the paintbrush for the edges and the decking applicator or roller for larger areas. As you apply the stain, run in the direction of the boards and finish each board before moving onto the next. You’ll need to move quickly as you don’t want the stain to dry or the oil to penetrate too much as you work, because this could make the job look patchy. OIL OR STAIN? The two main options for revamping a timber deck are an oil and stain. So which is the best for your project? Decking oil is designed to protect timber without dramatically changing the natural look of the wood. Most oils are naturally pigmented, so they will change the colour of the timber, but usually only slightly. If you want to make a more dramatic colour change, a stain is a good choice. They have a higher level of pigment than oils, so can change the colour of the timber quite significantly.

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting another lovely Sunshine Coast client. The family’s builder had just finished renovations on their now beautiful home, and they have just moved in. The property has been transformed from a plain double-storey brick house to a beautiful contemporary coastal cottage-style home with a splash of boho, Scandi and Hamptons in all of the right places. While the house itself has turned out to be amazing, the exterior spaces still needed a little work. The main aims for the family were to have a large grassed kickabout space for their children, improve the pool area and renovate their gardens and landscaping within a reasonable budget. Through the consultation we decided to push back and excavate an area of the yard to create a flat grassed space coming off the back of the patio. To save money we retained the existing link block walls and are aiming to reuse the moved blocks. To soften the walls we have added cascading groundcovers, which also complement the coastal cottage theme of the home.
The owners had already taken a pressure cleaner to the back fences, which really improved the initial look of the timber fence, however, a coat of grey paint will assist in making the yard look more finished and the dark colour will recede, making the yard look larger. It will also
help the new planting really ‘pop’ and stand out. Alternated shrubs and decorative vines add visual interest and a design feature. The pool area is to be tidied up, with hardstand and pool coping being removed to make way for new stone-look tiles on a concrete

white is forever It’s the most popular paint colour for interiors, but if you’re going for white because you think it will simplify your decorating, think again. Experts say its harder to choose white than any other colour, so read on for our tips.
White is the most popular interior paint colour for home renovators. But all whites aren’t created equal and you need to do your homework so you’re happy with the whites you choose. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, which maintains colour standards, cautions against choosing pure, untinted white, saying it can be very sterile and cold. It can even give people sore eyes because it’s so dazzlingly bright. It’s okay to start browsing the multitudes of white paint available online, but you shouldn’t make your decision without heading into a paint shop. Colours on a computer screen can look totally different in real life. Visit a paint store and take a piece of plain white paper. you’ll get a better idea of the whites you like. When deciding on the perfect shade of white, consider the natural light in your home. North-facing rooms generally have weak, cool natural light, so you’ll need to compensate for this by choosing a warm white. South-facing rooms usually have plenty of strong light from sunshine, so you may find it helpful to choose a cool white that balances glare. The experts at Dulux suggest a cool white in living rooms with good natural light and a warm white in darker living rooms. In bedrooms, white with a hint of teal or moss is calming. In a small bathroom with poor natural light, a white that tends towards a warm blue with a hint of purple can make it appear larger. To create a calm kitchen, go for a white with touch of fresh pastel green or blue. The ceiling is like the fifth wall. Most people prefer a flat white on the ceiling, but you can bring focus to the ceiling with a semi-gloss.

GET YOUR GARDEN IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER It’s not too late to have a garden blitz in time to get the most out of your outdoor areas this summer.
Week 1 – Garden blitz Your garden will be looking for a good pruning to stop it from turning into a jungle, as many plants experience plenty of growth in the warmer months.
