I
will never forget our first home pool. We lived in north Queensland – it was hot, humid and a pool was a necessity, or so, as a teenager, I told my parents. One day I arrived home from school to discover a huge hole dug out in the backyard. That afternoon is now one of my most memorable childhood moments. The tropical-inspired pebblecrete pool was a haven and the greatest gift, which gave us so many happy moments as a family. Now, as a parent, it is my turn to pass on those beautiful memories of weekends spent in the backyard pool. My husband and I have quietly started the planning process and cannot wait to surprise our little boy in the coming months. During our research, we have discovered there is so much more to installing a pool than first meets the eye. Planning, location, fencing, hardscaping, landscaping, drainage, safety… the list goes on. INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING The design lends itself to the Sunshine Coast’s beautiful weather and takes advantage of the location by incorporating a cohesive link between the internal and external living areas. The dining space is bordered by wide retracting doors, ceiling-high windows and glass panelling. Not only does this create a feeling of space, but it calls on the biophilic principles of living as one with the environment.
When the owners of this early 1980s double brick and concrete house approached Shoreline Constructions, little did they know their dream home would be named as the best renovation/addition project at the 2020 Queensland Housing Awards, let alone up for the national title. There was no expense spared for the extensive renovation of this Sunshine Beach home – the project came in over the $1 million mark and took around two years to complete. HIA’s awards program provides home builders and designers the opportunity to receive recognition, and showcase their work to the broader industry. The annual awards cater for entrants ranging from small family-owned businesses right up to the biggest names in the residential building industry and recognise quality workmanship, design excellence and innovation.

After a long time in lockdown, and that lockdown having sent many people to work from home, there has suddenly formed an onus on architects and designers to make workplaces more focussed and aware of wellness. If you haven’t yet heard of the term ‘biophilic design’, you soon will as it continues to garner a substantial following. Although it has been around since the 1980s, this design principle is only now gaining moment in the wake of COVID-19, which made many feel disengaged from the environment. In brief, biophilic design is how you engage nature in your environment. It’s about incorporating the outside world into the inside world, harnessing plants and design elements from the natural world. The concept functions through three different bases: the nature of space, the nature in space, and natural analogues. What’s more, research indicates there are many wellness benefits that come from incorporating natural elements into your living, work and

volleyball in Venice Beach, California, Cory Walker is an architect who is highly regarded in professional circles for his ‘wellness innovations’ in the field. His firm was launched in February 2020, just before the pandemic hit. I spoke with Cory recently on my podcast, talkdesign.show, and he shared several ideas for how the office spaces and homes of the future could embrace nature to improve our general wellbeing. Speaking on biophilic design, Cory said that people were meant to be in union with nature. “One of the biggest things you could do is bring nature inside of your home. Get a bunch of plants and take care of them and have them thrive and it will make your mind thrive.” He said static nature is good for wellness, as is dynamic nature, taking a break from work and walking in a park. “Experiencing (dynamic nature) is super healthy,” he said. “Surrounding yourself with nature would be a first step, and it’s the most economically reachable.” Bringing nature into the world of architecture is also important. “Coming home should be something that feels good and you’re proud of… that’s the first step of wellness.” To view Cory Walker’s work, visit walks-studio.com

Sunshine Mitre 10 celebrated the opening of the new flagship store at Nambour on Saturday, July 24 with The Block TV star Scott Cam, as well as 2020 series winners Jimmy and Tam Wilkins there to celebrate. Sunshine Mitre 10 general manager Neil Hutchins says it is exciting to see the new 13,000-square metre site open. “The store will employ 40 staff and offer the latest variety of products to our retail and trade customers,” Mr Hutchins says. Sunshine Coast residents Jimmy and Tam, together with much-loved television personality Scotty Cam, joined together to cut the ribbon to officially open the store, before chatting with fans who joined in the celebrations. With 19 stores throughout

Queensland, Sunshine Mitre 10 is one of the largest independently operated and owned hardware suppliers in Queensland. It is also one of the oldest surviving businesses here on the Coast, celebrating its 110th milestone this year. Established in 1910 by Walter Lanham, W Lanham & Sons Saw Mill was built on Price Street in Nambour. The business eventually shifted to its current location on Court Road in 1945, and by 1975 became known simply as Lanhams. Meanwhile a little way down the road, the Melville family-owned business Melco had spent the past 20 years supplying Noosa and surrounds with timber and builders’ hardware. Realising a demand in the market, it became apparent to Keith, John and Mark Melville that in order to reach new heights, they needed to be associated with a national brand. The Melco business joined the Mitre 10 group, and with the expansion, they invested in a new purpose-built space. Located on Venture Drive, in Noosa, the store was called Melco
Mitre 10. The year 2008 saw the merger between both the Melco and Lanhams companies, creating an entity that was previously known as MelcoLanhams and today is known as Sunshine Mitre 10. Fast forward to 2021 and the company now has stores across Brisbane, including Eagle Farm, Bundaberg, Caloundra, Coolum, Cooroy, Dalby, Gympie, Kawana, Kingaroy, Kunda Park, Mareeba, Nambour, Noosa, Roma, St George and Weipa. “We have been steadily expanding over the past few years, with new sites in Bundaberg, St George, Brisbane City and now a flagship in Nambour,” Mr Hutchins says. “This new Nambour location is special, because Nambour is where the company’s 110-year history began. So, it is great to see this new store, which will support our retail customers as well as the increasing demand on the Sunshine Coast for trade supplies. “Sunshine Mitre 10 already employs more than 400 staff across

HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT DECK If you have space, a well-designed deck is a great way to add extra entertaining room and value to your house. Sunshine Mitre 10 provides the following advice on creating your own space at home. STEP 1: DESIGN Deck design is a personal choice, but site location will come down to a few factors. You may need to build a hillside deck on a sloping block, or an isolated deck around a pool or a garden feature like a gazebo. A great way to add extra space to a family room or living area is a low-level deck extension for that inside/outside feel. Handy tip: Most decks require council approval so make sure you do your research and if you are unsure, it’s always best to check. STEP 2: ASPECTS TO THINK ABOUT Start thinking of how you want the deck to work for you. Ask yourself questions such as, how big is the table you want to put on the deck, do you want shade or sun, do you need stairs or safety railings, does it need a roof, will you need power (think waterproof power points), do you need lighting or blinds, do you want the deck
to have easy access to the kitchen, do you want a quiet deck or is it an extra play area for the kids? All of these considerations will change the position, shape and idea of your perfect deck. STEP 3: DECKING BOARDS The next step is to decide which way you want the decking boards to run, parallel to the house or even diagonal. Also take into account the finish you prefer. The deck should be coated with something that will help protect it from the elements. STEP 4: PLACEMENT PLANNING Familiarise yourself with your preferred deck area to prepare. You may need to remove trees or obstructions or level out the land. Drainage may be required as well, you may need to put in ag pipes so the surface water doesn’t pool underneath the deck. Weed control matting can also be a good idea. STEP 5: GETTING READY TO BUILD Accuracy in the planning stage is going to save you a lot of pain later on. Don’t rush this part, as it will ensure a great

THE PRICE IS RIGHT When it comes to planning a pool project, the first step is to identify your budget and the second is to compare quotes. Comparing pool quotes can be a little like comparing apples and oranges, says Poolfab Pool and Landscape Creations managing director Sean Lynch. “The promise of a cheap price and a quick deal can seem alluring, but do you know what your quote actually includes? Cheap materials, poor craftsmanship and an unfinished pool, can put a damper on your poolside fun. A professional pool builder will provide a detailed quote that explains all of the components needed to install your pool. Most importantly, you won’t have to call different subcontractors to finish the job.” Here are Mr Lynch’s four fundamental questions to ask when comparing pool quotes.

1. Does your pool quote include council approval? Adding a pool to your home requires building approval from your local council. To avoid delaying the construction process, find a pool builder who includes the council’s tick of approval in their quote. If they don’t, you will have to organise the documentation yourself and front any extra fees.
It pays to check if your pool builder also includes insurance or warranty for the project. The right poolside professionals will have Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) accreditations and be able to provide peace of mind with a warranty for your investment. 2. Does your pool quote include landscaping? Building a pool should be more than just putting a concrete hole in the ground. A pool should reflect an oasis, a place you can relax on a summer afternoon. 3. Does your pool quote include fencing? One of the most important aspects of your pool is being able to keep your family safe. Ask your pool builder whether the fencing is following Queensland laws and whether it is a temporary fixture. Some pool quotes will only include a temporary fence and will expect you to organise someone to finish the job. Does the pool builder include a safety gate or certificate on completion? With the cooler weather, it’s a great time to get outside in the garden and get your outdoor areas ready for when the temperature warms up. There is nothing worse than slogging it out in your backyard in the middle of summer, so I thought it might be a good time to showcase a recent backyard concept design to give the readers out there some inspiration. This design aimed to keep the existing alfresco and pool area, but update the space in a more aesthetically pleasing way and create some more recreational opportunities for the family. Starting from the base up it was important to create a design with new tiles and boundary works to create a better backdrop. When we looked at the large existing expanse of tiled alfresco area, we realised that the backyard only had a small amount of grass and a lot of hardstand that was never actually used. We decided to minimise the tiled area and increase the turf zones so there were more soft spaces for the children to play. The new tile
CURRENT POOL selection works with the interior palette of the home which is important to ensure a good indoor and outdoor flow. The back fence and neighbouring house needed screening so we included a lilly pilly hedge and some planting along the rear boundary. The side fence needed replacing and the existing pool water feature was disused, so we swapped it out for a long planter box and new stained timber fence to provide softening
and a lush backdrop to the pool. There was also a pool pump that needed screening. A faux vertical fencing screen was added to hide the pool pump and include a pool storage area with bench seating and a retractable pergola over a new outdoor spa. The client wanted to include a spa but there wasn’t a lot of room and the shape of the pool made it difficult to include a traditional square

The increased turf zone afforded us the room to include another item on the client’s wishlist, which was a fire pit. We designed the
fire pit to have the ability to be swapped out as a feature plant box or solar-powered water feature reservoir in the summer. The fire pit also provided an opportunity to add feature shelving, which breaks up a large blank rendered patio wall. This shelving area contains pre-cut firewood to bring warm timber
tones into the design. It also works well with the cedar tub finishes. As you can see, the photo-real concept design not only beautifies the space, it also adds more outdoor entertainment and play opportunities for the entire family. It’s a win-win that everyone will enjoy.
