Egg-cellent DIY PROJECTS With the long weekend ahead of us, now is a great time to plan and prioritise those DIY tasks that have been building up around home. We have some project suggestions to get you started, and they are sure to brighten up your indoor and outdoor areas.
PAINT: FEATURES There are many ways to introduce a feature colour into your home. For homeowners who like to think outside the box, we have two great project ideas that take no time at all. 1. Arch wall feature This on-trend look will create an interesting focal point in any room, and is also a great way to highlight a unique piece of furniture or homewares product. Time: 1.5 hours work time WHAT YOU NEED: Sugar soap, masking tape, dropsheet (for the floor), string, pencil, measuring tape, roller and roller pole, roller tray, paint brush and paint. We like the Accent Interior Low Sheen product in pink. METHOD Clean the wall and then measure your arch. The width and height will be dependent on the size of your space. Make a pencil mark on both sides at the same height and then measure the gap between the two sides and mark the mid-point. Attach a pencil to the end of a length of string. The string needs to be half the width of your arch. Pin the string at the mid-point mark and keeping the
string taught, draw a semi-circle from one side to the other to form the top of your arch. Tape off the straight edges at the bottom of your arch shape with masking tape. To make sure it’s straight, you can make a plumb by attaching keys to a long length of string and holding against the wall. Tape along this line. Using a paint brush, paint the outline of the arch following the semi-circle pencil line. Start by painting just inside the line, then press the paint brush down with a little pressure and move slowly along the line for maximum control. Once you’ve painted the arch use the same paint brush to cut in along the masking taped edges then fill in the inside using the roller. Allow two hours to dry and then apply a second coat. Once you have finished the second coat, gently remove the masking tape while the paint is still slightly wet. Begin at one end and pull the tape back on itself in a steady, slow motion at a 45-degree angle to the painted surface. Stand back and admire your handiwork! Project by Mitre 10. tip! When it comes to DIY weekend work, don’t get over-ambitious. Keep the number of jobs to a reasonable number and be sure to balance work with family and downtime.
2. Upcycle furniture Bring new life to an old favourite. Time: 2 hours work time. WHAT YOU NEED: Your piece of furniture (chair, desk, table, sideboards all work great), sandpaper, dropsheet (for the floor), brush, paint, clear coat and primer undercoat. We like the Haymes Paint Elite Quick Dry Primer Undercoat as it’s a sealer and undercoat in one. It’s easy to apply and fast drying. METHOD Clean and sand the furniture. Apply the undercoat and allow to dry. Apply paint in your chosen colour. Once dry, apply the clear coat.

VALUE OF AUSTRALIA’S HOUSING MARKET SWELLS Residential property prices rose 23.7 per cent in 2021, the strongest annual growth in 18 years. WORDS: AAP. The value of Australia’s housing market now stands at close to $10 trillion after growing at the fastest annual pace in at least 18 years during 2021. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) earlier this month reported that residential property prices rose 23.7 per cent through 2021. This is the strongest annual growth since its records began in the September quarter of 2003. It said the value of residential dwellings has risen by just over $2 trillion since the December quarter 2020. e’ve all been there; a tradesperson arrives at your home, whether that be a painter, plumber, or carpenter, and begins preparing for the job. All is well, and you continue with your daily tasks. But then you make a cuppa, and can’t help but wonder, do you offer them one? Or what about offering them a helping hand to get the job done quicker and take some of the pressure off them? It’s difficult to know what the right thing to do is. With renovation projects at a high across the nation, having a tradesperson at your home seems like an inevitability in 2022. But, what are the expectations when it comes to common courtesy and having workers in your home? The team from industry group WD-40 have spoken with a group of plumbers, carpenters and all-rounder tradespeople, to find out once and for all what the ideal tradesman etiquette is. Here’s what they discovered…
TRADE EXPECTATIONS What’s the expectation when it comes to hosting tradies? We find out.
A BITE TO EAT? While you have tradespeople working in your home, it’s only natural to feel the need
to supply them with food and drinks, as if they were guests. However, we’ve found that tradesmen never actually expect this. When it comes to drinks, 100 per cent of the tradespeople questioned said they would never expect to be provided with a beverage. However, they would like to be offered one. This is fairly common sense, as drinks are easier to prepare and cheaper than food. On the other hand, the tradespeople also said that they would never expect food to be supplied for them, so you needn’t feel guilty for having your lunch alone!
A HELPING HAND? There are many reasons we may feel inclined to help tradespeople with their jobs while they’re working in our homes. Whether you’re trying to help get the job done quicker, learning a new skill, or attempting to reduce the cost – the research finds that most tradespeople would rather work solo. Although some of the tradespeople mentioned said they don’t mind a helping hand now and again, the majority claimed they would prefer to be left alone to complete their jobs

tradespeople actually prefer to be paid? When as asked what their preferred method of payment was, 100 per cent said they would choose a bank transfer as their top choice. Simple, hands-free, and easy to track, bank transfers seem to be the most popular payment method amongst tradespeople. Coming up a close second was cold hard cash. Some tradesmen are now beginning to carry around their own card machines, for ultimate ease.
“I don’t expect to get a drink, but it is always a nice gesture. I find it helps to build client relationships if you have a drink and a chat. If you’re lucky, you might get offered a biscuit or two with your cuppa, or there are the odd few clients who will offer lunch or cakes, but they are rare. Some are good as gold and some are drier than the Sahara, so I never expect anything”

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY Now that you’ve provided a cup of tea, the job has been done, and you’ve helped clean up – all that’s left is the simple matter of balancing the cheque. We’ve heard of some weird and wacky ways of paying people for a job, from hundreds of coins in change to offering favours in exchange – but how do

Looking for some inspiration on how to transform the entry to your home? This month we are showcasing a concept of a beautiful Sunshine Coast home that needed an entry design to improve the first impressions and functionality of the residence. With extended family living arrangements and children living at home longer, car parking is often a challenge. In this design we needed to provide car parking for five cars and also create a design concept to enhance the entry of the property. Fortunately this land parcel had enough space to design a four-car garage as shown in the concept, with the addition of a visitor park to the left of the driveway. By designing the new garage in the existing carport location we were able to utilise the existing slab and simply extend it on both sides to add functionality and a design element.

Before Retaining the existing slab also lowers the cost for the client. The location of the garage hides the water tank and air conditioning units at the side of the house. The referencing of the existing roof pitches of the house, and architectural cues, provide an aesthetically pleasing built-form that ties into the home design appropriately. To further enhance the entrance, the visitor car park was deliberately not specified as concrete hardstand. Instead, we opted for sleepers with gravel and planting to soften the zone and add more of a garden entry feel. Balanced planting zones on both sides of the driveway welcome visitors but aren’t too large that they become a maintenance chore, while bollard lighting will add a soft glow for evening guests.
We hope this concept has inspired fellow renovators to look outside of the square with their landscape designs and property entry improvements.

Adding blue and black accents also helps break up all of the tonality within the room, providing the dining area with a related identity to the open-plan living area.”
