In the short time since the announcement, the bright hue has been surfacing in everything from home design to beauty and fashion. And, we love it! This month we show you exactly how to have some fun and incorporate the colour purple into your own property. Year on year, interior and architectural design continues to evolve. As with the fashion industry, design concepts never die, instead often being brought back to life years later with a contemporary twist. With 2018 now in full swing, My Renovation takes a look at the colours and trends that will influence home design in the coming 12 months. It’s sure to be an exciting year. The colour purple Each year thousands of keen decorators, designers and stylists anticipate the launch of Pantone’s Colour of the Year, which sets the tone for the 12 months ahead. The Pantone Color Institute – the worldwide authority on colour – has declared 2018 to be the year of purple and we couldn’t be more excited. Critics are celebrating the launch of Ultra Violet, a vibrant blue-purple hue, which is already shaping makeup, fashion and home trends around the globe. Described as inventive and imaginative, Pantone says the colour is “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade”. The company says the colour “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking”.
SHADE – Whether bold or subtle, purple can look great. Which direction you choose to go in should depend on your personality and preference. If you prefer muted colours, use soft tones in simple ways. ACCESSORISE - Scour vintage stores to dig up unique pieces such as jewellery boxes, glasses, mirrors and lanterns. COLOUR MATCH – Couple purple with soft greys and jewel-tone hues such as emerald. COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY – Colours can stir emotion. Familiarise yourself with the different colours and how each can affect your mood. Warm purple is calming, while a deep tone will evoke a sense of wealth and sophistication.

WHERE TO NOW? In our first renovating column, we set out to determine why you would consider undertaking a renovation. Understanding the rationale behind a reno, helps determine some key aspects of any potential renovation. Namely, is it viable, what budget you should set and the design direction you should take? Having considered your why, you will have now determined if you should simply stay in the house as is, move house, renovate and stay, or renovate for profit either to rent or to sell. If after weighing up all the factors you have decided a renovation is not viable and you will simply stay in the house, then your job is done. If after consideration you determine it is best to move house, typically when looking to upsize or modify a house to meet changing family needs rather than go through the disruption of renovating,

then it is best to analyse the market to determine a good time to sell. Deciding to sell usually also entails a little bit of sprucing up of your property – lawns and gardens trimmed or replanted, paint touch ups and excess belongings taken away. Your real estate agent of choice will usually recommend a few jobs to be completed to improve your sale or rental return. Kylie Bond, sales agent with McGrath, advises conducting at least eight mini-renovation tasks prior to putting a property on the market. These include clearing rubbish and excess items from the home and yard; washing walls, floors and driveways; clearing or planting plants if needed for better street appeal; applying fresh paint in a neutral colour; replacing old curtains or blinds; replacing bulbs if dull and lightshades; change floor coverings if needed; install airconditioning and give the kitchens

If you’ve considered your why and decided that renovating to improve financial return is your renovation raison d’être, then you need to be financially astute, design savvy and know some reliable and affordable tradespeople. Finally, if you choose to renovate and stay, you can really have some fun. You must now start to prioritise exactly what improvements you would like to see in your existing property – whether it be add a rumpus room, convert a carport, install an ensuite, put in a pool or add on a parent’s retreat. The options are endless. Now that you have decided your why, which way you are headed in terms of whether you will undertake a renovation, and for what purpose, we can look forward to analysing the renovation process in more detail.

1. Hire a professional. My clients engage me as an interior designer. Even if you decide to project manage the renovation yourself, you can save yourself a lot of time, money and heartache with some solid professional advice. Interior designers are up to date with the latest in design, fittings, surfaces and technology. 2. Set a budget and stick to it. By adding a small amount for project hiccups it can ease the stress. You never know what is behind that old wall or cupboard you are about to pull down. 3. Plan the layout. You need to consider how you live, work, cook, store products and shop. 4. Get rid of the clutter. I repeat myself a lot on this one but it is a good time to purge all of those silly kitchen gadgets that never see the light of day. 5. Choose colours and textures which complement the rest of your home or planned renovation style. 6. Use surfaces that are robust and easy to clean. The client of this kitchen (pictured) has children and also loves cooking. Therefore, the end result had to be beautiful yet functional. 7. Find the trades you are comfortable with. Source a minimum of three quotes from kitchen suppliers, an electrician, plumber, stone mason, painter and tiler. 8. Consider family life and plan how you will function in the home while the renovation is taking place. Also, keep kids safe and away from the project area.

Terrazzo
Did you know… Hexagon, square or oblong terrazzo tiles can easily transform the walls of any room. Check out the texture and life these tiles create to enhance this bathroom.
Reminiscent of a shopping centre floor, one of the biggest reemerging trends in homes for 2018 is terrazzo. The Italian flooring system has an enviable versatility that allows for complete personalisation of any space. Renovators can choose a simple palate to complement a minimalist design or go all out with elaborate designs in any colour imaginable. Prepare to see more terrazzo-inspired flooring spread throughout homes this year.
What is terrazzo? Terrazzo flooring is created by embedding aggregates of stone, glass, and marble, in cement or a resin base to achieve a beautiful, strong and durable surface. When installed traditionally, three levels are created on top of a waterproof base – a layer of cement, the desired aggregate mix which is then buffered and smoothed out and then topped with a sealant. This is not a procedure for the average DIYer, but luckily, terrazzo floor tiles that can be installed in a similar way to linoleum tiles are coming on to the market.

Ceiling fan master class by WWOL After 22 years in the ceiling fan industry the WWOL staff have seen dramatic changes in the design and technologies associated with new products coming to market. Products now have better form, function and aesthetics, ultimately trying to achieve a balance over all three key areas. WWOL is a designer and manufacturer of the Air Design ceiling fan brand, and is at the forefront of the latest designs being brought to market. One thing is certain – a fan is simply not just a fan anymore. DC VS AC CEILING FANS At a time when efficiency is on the tip of every consumer’s tongue, even in times of high temperatures, the question being asked is: how do you keep cool at a reasonable cost? Traditionally AC (alternating current) ceiling fans were once the only option for consumers. The consumption of energy was in range of 50 to 120 watts to operate a ceiling fan, which is still a far more efficient option than air-conditioning. However, it’s not as efficient
as the latest DC (direct current) technology. With the introduction of DC ceiling fans came the addition of five to six speed remote controls, giving you more control over the speeds of the fan. And yet, power consumption is as little as 4.8 to 32 watts. Having a remote has an additional benefit. You can also install an LED light, in lieu of just an existing light point, with no extra wiring required.

Timber vs metal and plastic ceiling fans Ceiling fan manufacturers in the early 1990s offered the consumer just two choices of product – timber rattan ceiling fans (which gave little to no air flow) or three- to four-blade aluminium ceiling fans (which produced tremendous amounts of air flow). Therefore the precedent was set for most consumers. If you wanted aesthetics you would lean towards timber, and if you wanted function you would lean toward metal-bladed ceiling fans. However, with new technology, things have changed. With materials such as ABS or air-foil plastic being used for the blade or entire fan, the deciding factors that determined how the fan produced airflow have changed. Other major factors consumers take into account when considering fans is how well the product will last in a damp or corrosive environment. In these situations marine-ply timber, ABS plastic or 316 marine grade stainless are the perfect materials for minimal maintenance products.
