016 – what a year it’s been so far for major events in our region. To date we have welcomed thousands of competitors and spectators to a myriad of national and international events. In April, we welcomed 7000 competitors and 20,000 spectators to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. The event was hailed by Australian Surf Life Saving President Graham Ford as the “best ever Aussies”. In May, our region welcomed thousands of paddlers, spectators, officials, volunteers and dignitaries as part of the Va’a World Outrigging Championships. It was a truly multicultural celebration, which was deemed the most successful World Outrigging Championships ever staged. In June, our Hinterland played host to the International Rally of Queensland – held here for the past 36 years and again (despite the rain) enjoyed by competitors and spectators. In July, an estimated 38,000 green thumbs and novice gardeners were out in force at the annual Queensland Garden Expo, a three-day “must see” celebration of all things gardening. All of these fantastic events provide the perfect opportunity to showcase our region as the regional events capital of Australia and as a great tourism destination. The economic impact of major events is broad and far-reaching. They are worth tens of millions of dollars to our local economy each year. Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Mayor

his is a very special year for the region as we host an exciting raft of new national and international events, in addition to our already impressive events calendar. Literally, the World is Coming to the Sunshine Coast! The Sunshine Coast has proven it can successfully host large-scale events with an impressive staging of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, Va’a World Outrigger Sprint Championships and the International Rally of Queensland receiving rave reviews from organisers, participants and spectators. Events are important drivers of tourism. Research indicates three-quarters of event attendees would not have gone to a destination, if not for an event. In addition, for 57% of first-time visitors to the region, the event is the main reason for visiting and likewise for 69% of repeat visitors. We look forward to other exciting international events to be held throughout 2016, including the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Wanderlust and the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games. These events will attract more national and international visitors to the region during the events but also build on our reputation for repeat visitation for years to come. Together with our volunteer ambassadors, tourism operators, council and wider community, we will continue to provide world class service for these world-class events and invite the local community to be part of the thrilling action. t has been an extraordinary year already for events on the Sunshine Coast. Our region staged the “best ever Aussies” the 2016 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in April. Then, the most successful World Outrigger Sprint Championships ever held. In July we saw record breaking crowds visit the Queensland Garden Expo at Nambour. We were also thrilled and honoured to announce that the Sunshine Coast has been chosen as the first regional centre to host the Australian Event Awards. This will be for 3 years starting in September 2016. The staging of these national awards on the Sunshine Coast reinforces our growing reputation for being Australia’s leading regional events destination. We pride ourselves on being an ‘event-friendly’ destination; a reputation which has been many years in the making. In calendar year 2016 we will host 60 major events and will welcome around 150,000 national and international guests generating about $100 million in economic activity. The successful staging of events on the Sunshine Coast would not be possible without the support of our community, residents and businesses who have welcomed our event guests. The Sunshine Coast Events Board recognises the event promoters and their teams. They continue to deliver successful events which are embraced by our local community and by the many visitors to our region.

s we race towards the end of the year, we can look back on the events hosted by our Sunshine Coast community and be immensely proud of what we have achieved. The Australian Surf Life Saving Champions were hailed as the “Best Ever Aussies” by Australian Surf Life Saving president Graham Ford; the Va’a World Outrigger Sprint Championships brought an estimated contribution of $18m to the region and the Queensland Garden Expo was the biggest yet with 40,000 people passing through the gates. The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon, now in its fifth year,
attracts over 7,000 competitors and 10,000 spectators to the scenic Alexandria Headland course. The iconic community run festival raises funds for over 70 charities with the quest this year to make it a million dollars for community. We have been a foundation partner of this world-class event and have made considerable investments in it to ensure the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon’s ongoing success. Also ahead of us in 2016 is the Caloundra Music Festival, one of Queensland’s top music festivals that have developed a huge national following; the Ironman 70.3 World Championships; Wanderlust and the Australasian Police and

The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon
T
here are a few ways to travel 42 kilometres on the Sunshine Coast. You can do a shopping trip from Caloundra to the Plaza and back, you can do a coastal tour from Coolum to Moffat, or you can attempt the most rewarding journey on offer – the Channel 7 Marathon. Hundreds of competitors will set out on Sunday August 21 to challenge the course and themselves in the final event of the Community Running Festival 2016 which also includes the McDonalds Half Marathon, Westpac 10 kilometre run, Love and Partners 5 kilometre run, Queensland Government Family Dash and the Cricks Fun Run. This year, the not-for-profit event aims to raise in excess of $250,000 making it $1,000,000 to charity and community groups in the five years since the event began. Originally the vision of three mates who loved running and wanted to give back to a cause close to their hearts; this event now aspires to be the largest fundraising marathon event in Australia. Run as an individual, a school team, a community group, a workplace crew or a running group – whatever the

Name Dion Finocchiaro Age 27 Where are you from? Chelsea, Victoria. How would you describe yourself in three words? Hardworking, competitive, passionate. How did you get started in your sport? Running as a child is what got me going. I ran a bit in primary school without really knowing why and it was never really thought of or recognised. Once high school started I really developed my passion for the sport while never really becoming serious in any way. After I completed my chef apprenticeship is when it all started happening for me. Since then, it’s been a constant stream of improvements and making amazing friends. What’s your greatest achievement in your sport? Australian record holder for six hour running in 2015 (85.037km). What’s your ultimate goal in your sport? To represent Australia in the marathon. Hopefully the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Also the 100km World Championships which is at the end of this year. What do you like most about competing? The feeling of hard work paying off and knowing that you’ve left everything out on the course and being proud of the effort put in. Favourite moment while competing? I’m going to be boring and say the feeling of crossing the finish line. Worst moment while competing? The feeling of collapsing at the Melbourne Marathon in 2015 with 500m to go. I was the first Victorian athlete at this stage in the Marathon Championships. Although, while this was a horrible feeling, I have taken many positives from this event and it has made me a much stronger runner both mentally and physically. Who do you admire most in your sport? Anyone who laces up and lives a healthy lifestyle. But for me, in terms of inspiring athletes it’s the usual
marathon greats - Steve Moneghetti, Robert de Castella, Lee Troop, Michael Shelly, Liam Adams. Do you have any pre-competition ritual or superstition? Pasta the night before. All gear packed the night before too. What would an average meal look like? A normal day may be two toasts with Vegemite, a few muesli bars, two salad sandwiches for lunch, a few pieces of fruit, possibly another snack. Dinner would be either salad wraps with some sort of protein and vegetables or roast chicken with sweet potato, broccolini and mushrooms. And maybe a Milo to end the night. How would you describe your sport in three words? Fun, Challenging, Rewarding What attracted you to the Sunshine Coast event? I came last year for the event and it was the most enjoyable event I’ve ran and the best birthday I’ve ever had too. Who doesn’t love a warm sunny day on your birthday while doing what you love! What has drawn you back? I had such a great time last year that I couldn’t resist this year’s event. Plus I would like to go one place better than last year which was second. What would be a good result for you in the Sunshine Coast event? I would love to beat last year’s time of 2:29, which was a training run at the time.

he tradition continues at the Coolum Pines MX track this August when it hosts the final championship round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals. The Coolum MX track, which is considered one of the country’s premier MX venues, has played host to the series final (championship round) for several years and 2016 promises a new level of spectator thrills as the final round is broadcast live to an expected 100,000 plus audience via www. mysportlive.com.au. The series is sanctioned by Motorcycling Australia (MA), the premier professional motorcycle racing organisation in Australia and features the best riders from across Australia and New Zealand in a 10-round battle for ultimate supremacy. T
he IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to be held on the Sunshine Coast is exactly half the distance of the holy grail of triathlon, the IRONMAN World Championship held in Kailua-Kona Hawaii. The 70.3 refers to the distance of the race in miles, in kilometres the athletes will cover a 1.9km swim, 90km ride and finish with a 21.1km run. The 70.3 world championship is in its 10th year and for the first time ever is being held in Australia. A year of more than 90 qualifying events saw 200,000 plus athletes fight for the opportunity to become one of the more than 3,000 athletes who will line up at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, Sunshine Coast. Garth Prowd - the Coast’s real Ironman It’s been an amazing journey to get to the stage where the Sunshine Coast is hosting the Ironman 70.3 World Championships – can you take us back to how it started? It really started way back in about 1983 with the first Noosa Triathlon which was grown and developed over many years to become the largest triathlon in the world and is now generally recognised as a benchmark for successful sports tourism events globally. That was followed about 10 years later by the introduction of the Mooloolaba Triathlon which also quickly achieved national and international recognition and for many years has been one of the most prominent events on the ITU WORLD CUP Triathlon Series. USM EVENTS, the company which managed both events, started not long after and grew to become one of the largest sports events management companies in Australia with ownership / management of more than 50 events per annum in Australia and around the
Pacific Rim. USM EVENTS is now part of one of the world’s largest sports management companies under the global IRONMAN banner with its Australian and NZ headquarters still based on the Sunshine Coast. Could you in your wildest dreams imagined that from those beginnings the Sunshine Coast would get to stage the world championships this year? It was actually pretty clear almost from the beginning that the Sunshine Coast had all the necessary topographical, climatic and technical attributes required to stage successful major triathlon events - without a doubt one of the best triathlon venues in the world. There was also strong council and community support for these two events from the beginning as the local business community soon realised the benefits that these successful tourismbased events could bring to the region and the general community became aware of the many diversified benefits that would flow from the events. The long-term goal was always to have the Sunshine Coast become recognised as the “home of triathlon” in Australia and that has now been well and truly achieved with this event being one of the final few pieces in the puzzle, and
even though it’s taken a bit longer to come to fruition than was first envisaged, it’s still a pretty good feeling. Over those many staging of events on the Sunshine Coast are there any races that stand out more than others? Why? I think that the first ever World Cup held on the Sunshine Coast in 1996 would be a standout because it was the first time that big numbers of international athletes came to the region to compete in any sporting event - and the first time that the region was showcased in a global television broadcast. This also helped to establish the region’s current international reputation of excellence in the delivery of major sports events and also to show off the many tourism attributes of the region to a completely new international audience who have since become very strong advocates for the Sunshine Coast region. Everyone who enters these events is tough – but do any competitors stand out over all those years? Certainly Craig Walton who was generally renowned as the toughest competitor in triathlon. He would ALWAYS go as hard as he could for as long as he could right from the start gun and then
challenge the rest of the field to catch up to him if they could. You could always count on him to show up AND put on show. Emma Carney was also a standout because, even though she generally came out of the swim leg right at the back of the pack, she is arguably still the fastest ever female triathlete in the world over the Olympic distance. Emma Snowsill is also a standout for her contribution to the sport in taking the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, and the sheer number of triumphs she had through her career. What is the future of Ironman on the Sunshine Coast? I’m sure the IRONMAN company and its associates will continue to grow and prosper as an entity in this region while the annual Sunshine Coast 70.3 will also retain its position as the best 70.3 in the country. I’m also quite certain the 2016 World 70.3 Championships will be such a resounding success that everyone involved will be looking for the very first opportunity to bring the World 70.3 Championships back to the Sunshine Coast again – the sooner the better.

Athlete Profile – Tim Reed Name/Nickname Tim Reed (Reedy) Age 31 Where are you from? Byron Bay How would you describe yourself in three words? Short, determined and quirky. How long have you been competing in your sport? 10 years. How did you get started in your sport? I was talked into doing an Ironman by a good friend. He signed me up, sorted me out with my first bike and gave me a couple of months to start swimming, biking and running. What’s your greatest achievement in your sport? I think my most prestigious victory was the Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships in 2015 but my most sentimental was winning Ironman Australia this year. What’s your ultimate goal in your sport? To achieve my potential without
sacrificing the important relationships in my life - family, friends etc. Sorry to give a vomit worthy cliché answer like that. However I’ve learnt that any result achieved will never really satisfy, the expectations just get higher. What do you like most about competing? There are those races that only come maybe once or twice a year where you feel invincible out on the race course. There is always another gear available and mentally you are numb to the pain. Unfortunately most races don’t feel like this but when they do, it’s the most amazing feeling. Favourite moment while competing? The finish line. Whether it’s a bad day or a great day, that finish line can spell the ultimate feeling of elation or more often than not, pure relief it’s over. Worst moment while competing?
When you’re overtrained and you can’t get out of your own way. Who do you admire most in your sport? Craig Alexander. Not because of his multiple world titles but rather because he’s made it work as a very involved father of three. Do you have any pre-competition ritual or superstition? If I haven’t gone to the toilet three times before race start I get a little anxious. How strict are you on your eating regimen? – What would an average meal look like? Relatively strict when I’m heading into a bigger race. I try to minimise processed carbs and eat real food with the majority of my calories coming from healthy fat sources. A typical meal would be grass-fed beef with a big salad full of avocado, nuts, cheese with a liberal dose of olive oil dressing.

How would you describe your sport in three words? Community, Type A, Addictive What attracted you to the Sunshine Coast event? A world championship just up the road from my house. Sold, to the little chap from Byron Bay. What are you most looking forward to? A tough fair race. I watched the race last year and to be honest I wasn’t convinced the bike course was suitable for a World Championship. However the event team has changed the bike course to include some of the more beautiful and challenging riding terrain of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, transforming the nature of this race to very world championship worthy. How would you describe the Sunshine Coast in three words? Pretty bloody good.

2016 events, the story so far...
Australian Surf Life Saving Championships • 7000 competitors • Attended by an estimated 22,000 spectators • Accommodation booked solidly from Mooloolaba to Maroochydore It was 36 years since the Sunshine Coast last hosted the event and our community did us proud by providing a warm welcome which was greatly appreciated by all who attended. The event was hailed by Australian Surf Life Saving President Graham Ford as the “Best Ever Aussies”, an accolade to be proud of.
Va’a World Outrigging Championships • 2200 competitors • 25 countries • 75% of competitors from interstate and overseas In May, our region welcomed thousands of paddlers, spectators, officials, volunteers and dignitaries to the Sunshine Coast, as part of the Va’a World Outrigging Championships, which was declared the most successful World Outrigging Championships ever staged. We understand that many competitors and spectators extended their stay and experienced our region as tourists and we estimate that the event generated a significant economic contribution to the region. Further testament to the success of the Championships on the Sunshine Coast is the fact that the International Va’a Federation / International Outrigger Canoe Federation has invited AOCRA to submit a bid to host the 2019 World Outrigger Marathon Championships on the Sunshine Coast.
A highly successful family fun evening was held on the Friday evening, with approximately 1000 local residents getting to meet the stars of some very fast cars.

Record breaking year The Sunshine Coast has never had a year quite like this one for staging events in such quantity and quality. 2016 has already set the standard for many years to come… the facts and figures tells the story, and the amazing thing is, there are still plenty more events to come.
Queensland Garden Expo The Queensland Garden Expo was once again a bloomin’ success with almost 40,000 garden lovers attending the event at the Nambour Showground. Full-size gardens provided the centrepiece of the event which included more than 360 exhibitors, seven live stages hosting lectures, demos and workshops, and nearly 40,000 plants for sale each day. Gardeners were attracted from as far away as New Zealand, New South Wales and Victoria.
International Rally of Queensland In June, our hinterland region played host to the International Rally of Queensland – held here for the past 36 years and again (despite the rain) was enjoyed by both competitors and spectators alike.

Horizon Ignites on September 2 Maroochy Music and Arts Festival The second annual Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival is back this September, kicking off the start of spring with a sensory feast celebrating the hottest contemporary Australian and international bands and visual artists. Sunshine Coast Art Prize Since it began 11 years ago, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize has grown to become a nationally recognised award that attracts both emerging and established contemporary Australian artists. This year more than 625 entries were received from artists across Australia. The 40 finalists are showcased in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 18 to October 2. The exhibition is a must see. Featuring painting, photography, linoprint, digital print, mixed media, illustration and textiles, it’s sure to delight, intrigue and inspire gallery visitors. The exhibition includes work by local artists Jandamarra Cadd, Michael Cook, Stefan Dunlop, Peter Hudson, Dasha Riley and AJ Taylor as well as 12 other Queensland based and 22 interstate finalists. The winner will be announced on
September 1 with the winning artwork acquired for the Sunshine Coast Art Collection so it can be enjoyed by the community for years to come. The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 winner will receive a $25,000 cash prize sponsored by Audi Centre Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, plus an artist residency, sponsored by Montville Country Cabins. A Highly Commended artist will receive a $5000 cash prize sponsored by the Proost De Deyne family, and a People’s Choice Prize is also on offer with the winner to receive $2500 thanks to Caloundra Chamber of Commerce. Caloundra Music Festival
F
rom small things, big things grow - so the song goes. Back in 2007 the first Caloundra Music festival featured 30 bands on two stages and attracted about 5500 people. This year more than 36,000 people will see 70 bands perform over five stages - contributing $10 million to the local economy. In that first year headline acts included Jimmy Barnes, Richard Clapton and Mental as Anything. This year will feature Michael Franti and Spearhead, Guy Sebastian, The Cat Empire, Icehouse and Kate MillerHeidke. The Caloundra Music Festival has featured some of Australia’s biggest and best acts over the past 10 years including Powderfinger, John Butler Trio, Wolfmother, Empire of the Sun,

Festival Director Richie Eyles It’s been an amazing journey to get to the stage where the Caloundra Music Festival has reached 10 years– can you take us back to how it started? The Festival was originally imagined by the Caloundra mayor Don Aldous, who wanted to put Caloundra firmly on the map and drive tourism to the area. Could you in your wildest dreams imagined that from those beginnings that you would be where you are today with the festival? How does it feel? Yes, from the outset we did see the event succeeding. It feels good to
Over those many staging of the Caloundra Music Festival – do any performances stand out more than others? Why? I guess the performance by Powderfinger on their final tour in 2010 stands out, as much for the size of the crowd as for the terrible weather. What are you most proud of after all these years? We have a hard earned reputation for presenting quality and eclectic acts which appeal to a wide range of music lovers – in all age groups. Personally I’m most proud of presenting quality international acts like Alan Touissant, Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Booker T, Trombone Shorty, Dumpstaphunk…
and dedication of our event team and passionate volunteers. What will make this year’s event special? The Celebration of 10 years of Sun, Surf and Soul of course. For me, I can’t wait to see Michael Franti, Tower of Power, Incognito, Erica Falls… What sort of benefits are brought to the Sunshine Coast through the staging of this event? Great music is its own benefit! People travel from all
over the country to attend CMF. They spend their money here and that has a flow on effect. Plenty of young bands have had their start at CMF and have gone on to bigger and better things. What is the future of the Caloundra Music Festival on the Sunshine Coast? Every year we strive to create even better musical and an overall festival experiences for our patrons which flow on to benefits the local community.
What has been the secret of your success with this event? We embrace our unique points of difference – our beachside location, the eclectic nature of our program, the family friendly vibe and the quality of the line ups. Of course the event wouldn’t be as successful as it is without the hard work

Police and Emergency Services Games
T
he 16th Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games will be held on October 8 – 15 with more than 50 sports on offer. First held in 1984, the inaugural Australian National Police Games were founded with the intention of bringing Police Service personnel together under the common banner of sport. This spirit of friendly competition has been expanded to embrace competitors from New Zealand and other Pacific nations. From 1999, all full-time Emergency Services personnel were also invited to compete. Like no other event on the Emergency Services calendar, the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games builds camaraderie and promotes a healthy lifestyle through the participation in sport, while heightening the public’s awareness of
Police and Emergency Services. The games are conducted every second year at a new location which also provides competitors the opportunity to travel and enjoy a holiday at numerous locations throughout Australia and New Zealand. The games are for all the emergency services across the board, including volunteer organisations, such as the state emergency and volunteer fire services, lifesavers and marine coast guard. Invitations have also been forwarded to the Australian Defence Force specialist units —such as the military police and the medical paramedics. The different sports will be contested at a number of venues around the Coast, with the hub based at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Dragon boat racing will be on offer,
stand-up paddle boarding will be held on both still and open water, and Surf Life Saving Queensland will hold a carnival on the Wednesday at the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. One of the premium events will be the triathlon which has a massive following on the Sunshine Coast. This event will be the last scheduled at the games. For the first time since the games inception, a torch will be run into the stadium by Special Olympians shadowed along with officers from the Law Enforcement Torch Run at the opening ceremony and a cauldron will be lit. About half of the participants will come from around Queensland, with the remainder from around the country, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Australian Event Awards
T
he Australian Event Awards are an event in themselves and will be held on the Sunshine Coast for the first time this year. After a bid put forward by Business Events Sunshine Coast, Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, the Awards will take place at Novotel Twin Waters in 2016 and 2018 and The Events Centre in Caloundra in 2017. The bid is also backed by additional support from Qantas and airport transfer service Con-X-ion. Managing Director of the Event Awards Ian Steigrad says he is excited by the prospect of taking the Event Awards to a regional location for the first time. “Having the Awards on the Sunshine Coast is a great opportunity to showcase a unique part of Australia – a stretch of that magnificent coastline
for which we are so famous – and to demonstrate that regional destinations can offer the same level of service and innovation as a capital city, but with the added benefits of the breath-taking landscapes and accompanying activities that you don’t come across in a big city,” he said. “Set to host its largest ever portfolio of events in 2016, including over 60 major and regional events, the Sunshine Coast is well placed to be the home of the Australian Event Awards for the next three years, and by extension of that, a focal point for the national events industry each September when the Awards take place.” The Sunshine Coast will also host the accompanying two-day Australian Event Symposium, which in 2016 will be centred around “Inspiration, Operation and Communication”, bringing together
the creative directors of some of Australia’s biggest events and festivals as well as offering a variety of sessions exploring how to deliver the best creative events. The Australian Event Awards have been held annually since 2009, recognising the best events and achievements in the industry regardless of event size, audience, location or

Lake Kawana Community Centre
P
erformance, community and sporting venues are valuable assets of the Sunshine Coast. Council has six major performance, sport and community venues, located through out the region. Lake Kawana Community Centre The Lake Kawana Community Centre is a modern performance, community and cultural venue with 15 different spaces available for hire. Set on the picturesque banks of Lake Kawana, this multi-purpose venue is ideal for a wide range of activities from community yoga classes through to gala events for up to 1000 people. Events held at this venue include major live music performances by artists such as Angus and Julia Stone and Xavier Rudd, as well as Sunshine Coast Women’s Expo, Lifeline Bookfest, Flip Side Circus and Play School Live in Concert. Caloundra Indoor Stadium The Caloundra Indoor Stadium, is the Coast’s only four court indoor multipurpose stadium. Set within a larger outdoor sporting precinct, the Stadium also offers five outdoor netball courts and meeting space for hire. The venue hosts large sporting events such as the Australian School Futsal Titles, Australian U21 Netball Titles,
Queensland Club Gymnastics Championships, National Veterans Table Tennis Championships and Cheer Unlimited Australia Cheerleading Championships, as well as the Sunshine Coast Antiques and Collectibles Fair. Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex The Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex is the Sunshine Coast’s premier AFL facility and is also the region’s largest outdoor netball facility. Located only 15 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Airport across from the picturesque Maroochy River, the complex has three flood lit AFL ovals and 26 netball courts. The complex has hosted a number of significant national, state and regional events including national AFL pre-season camps, School Sport Australia National AFL Championships, AFL Masters National Championships, Mission Primary Schools Netball Cup and Queensland State Netball Championships. Sunshine Coast Stadium The Sunshine Coast Stadium is the premier venue for sport, leisure and entertainment for the Sunshine Coast Region. It is adjacent to Lake Kawana,
making it a versatile venue for a wide range of large scale events both on land and water. The stadium has a capacity of 1,050 in the tiered grandstand, and can accommodate 15,000 people for an outdoor event. The precinct has hosted many large scale events including the upcoming Australasian Police and Emergency Games, Va’a World Outrigging Championships, National Dragon Boat Titles, Touch Football National Youth Championships, AOCRA (outriggers), Australia vs NZ under 19’s Gridiron International and the Swisse Color Run. It has also played host to the Wallabies Rugby Union team and the Brisbane Roar for training and preseason activities during 2016 and 2015 and the 2016 pre season NRL Trial game between Melbourne Storm and West Tigers. An innovative new partnership has been formed with the Melbourne Storm NRL Club and Sunshine Coast Council, with the Sunshine Coast Stadium now the home base for the Storm Under 20s National Youth Competition (NYC) team and Academy. Queensland Cricket, Queensland Rugby League, Sunshine Coast Falcons and Sunshine Coast Fire continue to utilise the stadium as their local home base and administrative hub. Nambour Showgrounds The Nambour Showgrounds is centrally located within the Sunshine Coast region ideally situated close to the Bruce Highway. This venue successfully hosts large events, festivals, expos and trade shows. The venue is a 14.52 hectare recreational, sporting and events facility, with multi-purpose ovals, grandstand to accommodate up to 600 seated patrons, large equestrian
Sunshine Coast Stadium precinct, several fully equipped catering facilities and a number of meeting/function rooms for daytime and evening bookings. Major events held each year include the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show, Queensland Garden Expo, Swap Meet and South Queensland Caravan Camping Boating and Fishing Expo. Just some of the regular activities include cricket, tennis, equestrian and badminton. Events Centre The Events Centre Caloundra is the region’s primary performance venue and patrons will enjoy a better, more comfortable theatre-going experience when The Events Centre’s popular Playhouse Theatre undergoes a $665,000 facelift later this year. New ceilings, walls and floor will have acoustic linings to theatre standards, and the seating has been replaced with modern, comfortable seats. The Playhouse Theatre is the smaller and more intimate of the two theatres in The Events Centre. The theatre has been serving the needs of patrons for 35 years. The wonder of Wanderlust - a chat with Dustin Brown You will be teaching people how to do yoga + surf– how can that change a person’s life? My intention is to share my knowledge of surfing and yoga and to give people the tools to continue their journey after the festival. Spending time in nature and in the ocean allows you to reconnect, de-stress and to strengthen your mind and body. I hope to share this through my teaching and to empower others in the way that yoga and surfing has empowered me.
Dustin Brown We have a quick chat with Dustin Brown - one of Australia’s leading yoga practitioners... What attracted you to Wanderlust on the Sunshine Coast? Wanderlust Sunshine Coast combines two of my greatest passions, yoga and surfing. I grew up in Hawaii so the ocean was my true home and I spent most of my time surfing. Bringing a yoga festival to such a beautiful coastal location is perfection to me and I cannot wait to share my passions with the Wanderlust tribe!
How did you get into yoga/meditation? My wife convinced me to try a hot yoga class after completing a 30-day challenge herself. I knew it would complement my Jiu-Jitsu and surfing, but I was still resistant. Needless to say, after one class my obsession with asana yoga was born! The athlete in me recognised the enormous physical and mental challenge that yoga truly is and I set an intention of practicing for 60 days straight, which turned into six years straight and counting!
Meditation came years later. I started meditating and I became aware that is was a large piece of the puzzle that was missing. I went onto do my Vedic meditation training and now mediation is a huge part of my life and a non-negotiable twice-daily practice. What effect has it had on your life? It has allowed me to sharpen my mental focus, heighten body awareness, and boost my physical performance in my disciplines. Yoga has given me the clarity and power to push past my own limitations. Every time I show up to the mat my mind and body thanks me. Yoga and meditation has completely changed my perspective on life as well as my relationship to others and myself. Yoga has allowed me to give back to myself and when you come from a place of self-love and self-care, only then can you truly give your best to others.
Why do you think events like Wanderlust are so important? Wanderlust is a one-of-a-kind yoga experience. The connection and community people feel at an event like Wanderlust is beautiful to watch and be apart of. Stepping away from your regular life for a few days and fully immersing yourself in the experience will leave you recharged and full of inspiration. The Sunshine Coast scores its first national elite sports team
T
he Sunshine Coast will have its own national sporting team next year, with the region to be represented in the National Netball League (currently known as the ANZ Championship). The Melbourne Storm and the University of the Sunshine Coast are partners in the team – with the Sunshine Coast Council also supporting the initiative. The team will be based at the University of the Sunshine Coast sports stadium – a national standard indoor facility – and forms part of the university’s High Performance Sports Strategy and ambition to be the preferred destination for elite athletes and teams. It will be coached by New Zealand’s most successful ANZ Championship netball coach Noeline Taurua.
The foundation coach says the opportunity to come on board with the Sunshine Coast netball team for the new Australian National Netball League was “perfect timing”. “Coaching overseas has always been one of my goals and with the highlyregarded Melbourne Storm picking up the reins of the first ever national elite-level sport’s team to represent the Sunshine Coast, the timing was perfect to be part of a new venture and new era for netball. “It doesn’t get any more exciting than moving to a new country to coach a brand new team in a ground-breaking competition”. The Sunshine Coast’s first national senior sporting team will be a female team in a sporting code that is one of the fastest growing in the country. The new season competition will commence in February 2017.

he 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast will be officially commemorated on August 1, 2017. Sunshine Coast Council is supporting celebrations throughout 2017 to mark this historic occasion. A new, one-off Community Grants program for new and existing events, projects and activities has been developed especially for the 50th anniversary year. This program will provide grants to
Sunshine Coast not-for-profit community groups and organisations for events and activities that support the 50th Anniversary and its legacy. There are two types of grants available. Applications open Monday, September 5 and are due by 5pm Monday, October 31. Photography enthusiasts are invited to dig out their photo albums and cardboard boxes in search of their favourite 1960s photo of the Sunshine Coast for the chance to be featured in
History of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast The name ‘Sunshine Coast’ was launched in December 1958 at the inaugural dinner of the Sunshine Coast Branch of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, held at the Hotel Caloundra. The branch had begun a drive to popularise and obtain recognition for the name, to replace the
term ‘Near North Coast’, which was not considered distinct enough, and had ‘no significance for southerners’. The name ‘Sunshine Coast’ was officially endorsed by the then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils in November 1966 when it was agreed to utilise the name to cover the three shires. The name tied in with the decision to form the Sunshine Coast Promotion Bureau to promote the district covered by the three shires. It gave the district ‘a great start in developing a tourist industry’; ‘Sunshine’, signifying ‘brightness and warmth’ (and providing a different attraction to the Gold Coast). A “Notification of Decision to Adopt a Place Name” under the Queensland Place Names Act of 1958 appeared in the Queensland Government Gazette in July 1967. The name was endorsed by the Minister for Lands, Alan Fletcher, who advised that the decision would take effect from 1 August, 1967.

Get in touch with Mother Nature. Ancient volcanic peaks, peaceful rainforests, awe-inspiring waterfalls and pristine waterways - the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast will take your breath away. Relax and refresh beside waterfalls and crystal clear creeks or wander among tall open forests. Choose from Kondalilla, Mapleton, Buderim Forest Park - just to name a few. Or explore a beautiful coastline as you wind your way along the coastal path, and picnic with sweeping ocean views. 4. Lace up the hiking boots. The region boasts many family-friendly beaches Mountains and Mount Coolum national parks. Perhaps you have a few days to spare? The 58-km Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk will take you through some of the area’s most scenic locations. 5. Cruise along the sandy highway of the Great Beach Drive. If you want to get off the beaten track, head for the Great Sandy National Park and take to the beach in your four-wheel drive (4WD). Cruise along the shoreline to Rainbow Beach and marvel at the coastal cliffs and coloured sands, throw in your fishing line and catch yourself dinner. You’ll need a vehicle permit to drive along the sand and there are some places where camping is restricted, so be sure to check the signs before you set off on your adventure. 6. Enjoy family time at local attractions. Australia Zoo allows kids to get up close to and learn all about native and exotic wildlife, plus their daily Wildlife Warriors show features some of the Zoo’s favourite stars. Another place where the kids can meet wildlife is Sea Life Mooloolaba, with hundreds of creatures from the deep on display, including some very loveable seals. Feast on our local fresh seafood and produce. Mooloolaba is home to one of the busiest ports on the east coast of Australia, where you can feast on the freshest seafood straight off the trawler. Whether you are hungry for Mooloolaba prawns, oysters, swordfish, lobster or crab the catch of the day is waiting for you. Just head to the end of Parkyn Parade and take your pick! The region also boasts an abundance of fresh produce. You can also learn how to create your own culinary masterpieces at one of the many Sunshine Coast cooking schools.

If you wander through the many markets in this corner of Queensland, it won’t take you long to realise why the Sunshine Coast ranks as one of the top market destinations in Australia. You will find some great hidden treasures at the Eumundi Markets, Caloundra Street Fair or the Cotton Tree Markets, among many. 9. Take a drive through the hinterland.
