The top five scamming
success by paying dividends from new victims’ money, accounted for $8 million. Ponzi schemes are named after Charles Ponzi, who in the 1920s promised to double people’s money in 45 days. One such scheme doing the rounds in 2021 was the Hope Business app, which promised windfall returns simply by paying money into an account. The consumer watchdog’s report says men are almost twice as likely to be victims of investment scams and reported double the losses of female victims.
trends As more and more Australians get caught out by scammers, the nation’s consumer watchdog has identified the top five scam types fraudsters use to bleed their victims of billions of dollars.
G
reed, desire and naivety are lucrative markets for scam artists, and their age-old hustles are increasingly being supplemented by digital chicanery. In 2021 Australians lost an estimated $2 billion to fraudsters, more than double that of 2020, according to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission. The consumer watchdog’s latest scam report details more than 20 different scam types, primarily based on reports made to its Scamwatch agency. Some scams are perennials. Topping the list are investment scams, dating and romance scams, false billing, remote access scams (convincing you to allow access to your computer or phone), and threats. The top five trends are:
1. RANSOMWARE AND MALWARE This type of scam has been on the wane due to the use of anti-malware protection. But in 2021 it roared back with a 1482 per cent rise in reported losses over 2020. The reported costs per incident (about $21,704) are worrying given how easily such scams can be spread. They typically involve installing malicious software on your computer or phone to lock the device or
5. PHISHING make files inaccessible. This is done by sending a bogus email, text message or voicemail with an enticing message directing you to a link that automatically installs the malicious software when you open it. The scammer then demands a payment to ‘unlock’ the system. Contributing to ransomware’s resurgence was the Flubot scam, in which tens of thousands of Australians received scam text messages about missed calls or deliveries. The malware could harvest banking details and use contact lists to spread to other devices.
2. PYRAMID SCHEMES Pyramid schemes promise you riches by recruiting others to the scheme. While such recruitment is also a feature of multi-level marketing (or referral selling) schemes, in an illegal pyramid scheme financial returns are substantially or entirely reliant on convincing other people to join. In 2021 reported losses from pyramid schemes were 368 per cent higher than in 2020. This was due, as with malware, to losses in 2020 being abnormally low. But even though the total number of reported cases was quite low (fewer than 500) the percentage of those reports involving people losing money was one of the highest (44 per cent), with an average loss of $6239.
This suggests pyramid scams remain quite alluring to some people.
3. IDENTITY THEFT Identity theft – using personal information to steal money from you or someone else – is one of the most challenging scams to deal with. It may involve stealing money from your own account or using your identity for credit purchases, which you then have to untangle. This is a true growth area. In 2021 there were 22,354 identity theft reports, up from 20,939 in 2020. While only 951 of these cases (about four per cent) reported losses, average losses more than doubled to about $10,683. The total losses ($10,159,930) were 230 per cent higher than in 2020.
4. INVESTMENT SCAMS Investment scams tempt victims with promises of large profits from share deals and cryptocurrency opportunities. In 2021, 4068 Australians reported losing more than $177 million on such scams – an average loss of about $45,350. While investment scams come in many varieties, Scamwatch itemises three main types. Cryptocurrency scams accounted for $99 million of reported losses. Fake high-yield corporate or government bonds accounted for $16 million. Ponzi schemes, which create the charade of investment

Phishing, closely linked to identity theft, was the most reported scam in 2021 – with 71,308 cases, compared with 44,079 in 2020 and 25,168 in 2019. These scams are usually seeking to obtain our passwords to various services including email, online banking and government services such as myGov. That just 861 cases reported a direct financial loss suggests this is one of the most recognised scams. We’ve all had emails or SMS messages asking us to confirm our details or click a link to listen to a voicemail or receive a parcel. Even so, a total of $4.3 million was reported lost from phishing scams in 2021 – 156 per cent more than in 2020. The average loss was slightly more than $5000.
HOW TO AVOID BEING SCAMMED If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you have any inkling you are being scammed, stop and think. If you are being asked to move money, make an unexpected payment or send personal information to someone, stop. If you are being asked to provide information or take some action, contact the organisation involved using a number you already have or find the number yourself. fter a two year-hiatus due to the pandemic, the Sunshine Coast’s most-anticipated culinary festival is finally making a comeback. Kicking off later this month with a fabulous line-up of events to suit all tastes and budgets, The Curated (side) Plate will showcase the plethora of talented growers, producers, tourism operators and chefs we have right here on our doorstep. From July 29 to August 7, local restaurants, farms, tourism and event operators will open their doors to the public, offering the very best of the region’s local food and beverage experiences over a 10-day period. From paddock to plate experiences to well-known local producers including Montville Coffee, Sunshine & Sons and Sunshine Coast Cider, plus plenty of hidden gems and collaborations between businesses to create unique culinary experiences, The Curated (side) Plate is set to put the region firmly on the map as one of Australia’s best foodie destinations. co-ordinator Zoe Sparks, the response from local businesses has been even better than anticipated this year, with many unique experiences on offer. “The exciting thing for us is that Sunshine Coast businesses have really embraced it; the take-up has been terrific,” Ms Sparks says. “Events are coming back with a vengeance. Everyone is keen to get out and about and everyone loves food and wine. Quite a few of the events are already sold out, which is terrific and shows people are super keen to come along and enjoy.” With a focus on building from the ground up, Ms Sparks says this year’s event is all about showcasing the wonderful homegrown talent we have on the Sunshine Coast. “It’s quite different to what we did in 2019,” she says. “It’s now a councilowned event, supported by the Food & Agribusiness Network, and we are making sure we have gone back to grass roots, focusing on local businesses and setting the foundations to grow the event year

It’s the perfect setting for long conversations as the sun sets.”
Malt Shovel Taphouse is also collaborating with two of its local suppliers for two bespoke dining events including an exciting crab lunch and a special threecourse menu especially paired with gins from Sunshine & Sons distillery. “It is important to promote the diversity of the Sunshine Coast and everything that it offers to the local community, their friends and tourists alike,” Ms Christoe says. “Food festivals create bonds within the community and an identity for the industry. “The Sunshine Coast is an exciting foodie destination and it is an opportunity for further showcasing, to locals and visitors alike, that our local produce and food experiences are second to none. Yes, we are an amazing tourism destination for beaches and the hinterland… but not only that, the culture of food, drinks and entertainment here should be celebrated with events like The Curated Plate.” According to Ms Sparks, the biggest problem for visitors to this year’s festival will be deciding which events to go to. “The collaborations that have come out of it have been terrific,” Ms Sparks says. “For example, Sunshine & Sons distillery has joined with Silver Tongue foods for an event where you can enjoy a masterclass showing what’s involved in making and filling handmade donuts while Sunshine & Sons create their next batch of ‘Mr Barista’ coffee macadamia liqueur.” With a rise in the popularity of paddock to plate and farm gate experiences, The Curated (side) Plate also offers plenty of opportunities to connect with our local growers and producers, while enjoying the freshest produce on offer. “People are wanting to understand more about their food,” Ms Sparks says. “We have become more health conscious. We want it to be local, we want it to be fresh, we want it to be good quality. “We are all interested in the environment and getting back to nature. We want to know where our food comes from. “The Food & Agribusiness Network [FAN] are a partner of The Curated Plate and have allowed us to connect with some of the region’s best growers and producers.” FAN CEO Emma Greenhatch says the event is a fantastic council initiative which FAN is proud to support. “It provides our Sunshine Coast members and the local business
community the opportunity to collaborate and show locals and visitors everything we have to offer,” Ms Greenhatch says. “The event is designed to give all local businesses and producers a chance to shine and create further opportunities during The Curated Plate and all year round.” A long lunch experience celebrating the amazing produce from one of our region’s best regenerative family farms is just one of the many paddock to plate events on offer. ALIVE AND KICKING Marking 20 years of bringing arts and culture to the region, NOOSA alive! 2022 promises to be bigger and better than ever. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
A
n internationally recognised cultural festival that brings the best in arts and entertainment to the region will return this July as it celebrates 20 years. NOOSA alive! is returning from July 21 to 31 and will feature events that organisers say have “never been seen before”. Beginning in 2002 as The Noosa Long Weekend Festival, founders David and Kristin Williamson had a dream to shape Noosa’s arts and cultural scene, and with the support of patrons and supporters the event has grown and adapted to what it is today. This year more than 25 events are happening across various locations showcasing performers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, chefs, environmentalists and commentators. Festival director Ian Mackellar says since the festival’s inception it has brought thousands of events and several exclusive performances to the region. “Over the past two decades NOOSA alive! has presented the creme of local, national and international talent. “One of those highlights was two exclusive Australian performances with nine principal soloists from the San Francisco Ballet Company to great public acclaim. “NOOSA alive! has presented more than 2000 performances and varied events and more than 3500 performers, including special guests.” Festival president Andrew Stafford says this year the popular Long Lunch on Hastings Street is returning, as well as a two-day Seaside Vibes music festival, a

RECORD AMOUNT RAISED FOR MIX FM GIVE ME 5 APPEAL This year’s 92.7 Mix FM Give Me 5 appeal has raised a record funding amount to help young patients at local public hospitals. Thanks to the generosity of the community, a mammoth $544,719 will be donated to Wishlist from the month-long appeal that saw several local business, volunteers and supporters attend a calendar of events throughout June. Passionate in spearheading the campaign each year, breakfast radio hosts Mark Darin and Caroline Hutchinson are grateful for the support of the Sunshine Coast community in 2022, especially after what has been a difficult
financial time for many residents. “We had to rebuild after COVID but we are back. We are just so excited with this number and can’t thank everyone enough,” a statement from the breakfast duo reads. Proceeds from this year will go towards providing vital health staff positions to give greater access to services for children, as well as young pregnant women. CALOUNDRA GALLERY ART PRIZE FINALISTS ANNOUNCED Finalists for the region’s flagship 2D art prize have been announced ahead of an exhibition in Caloundra this August. From an impressive Mirror by New South Wales 487 high-level entries artist Gerwyn Davies from across the nation, 40 finalists will now be judged for prizes including major winner, highly commended and people’s choice. Caloundra Regional Gallery manager and curator Jo Duke says the finalist works chosen will create an extraordinarily colourful and exuberant exhibition from August 26 to October 16. “Colour was a strong element within all the entries received, perhaps providing an outlet to our way of thinking and living during the past year,” Ms Duke says. “The exhibition balances between abstract, realism and impressionist style of making. It is also always wonderful to have several of our local artists showing alongside their national peers and we’re delighted to present them within the show.” Of the 16 Queensland artists selected as finalists, three Sunshine Coast locals made the grade with Alexandra Headland’s Jordyn Burnett, Coolum Beach artist Casey Hewitt and First Nations artist from Mount Mellum, Cholena Hughes. Winners will be announced by this year’s guest judge Ellie Buttrose on October 6, while the people’s choice prize is chosen by visitors to the exhibition.
NEW WASTE COLLECTION TRUCKS A fresh fleet of waste collection trucks, with sustainable thinking in mind, have been unveiled on the Sunshine Coast. This new era, which include the region’s first electric waste vehicle, comes as family-owned company JJ’s Waste and Recycling takes local collection services and coincides with the start of Sunshine Coast Council’s expanded garden organics program. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the announcement will open more opportunities for the region to reach its goal of zero emissions by 2041. “In the beginning, the new fleet will include one electric vehicle, which will service public place bins in our community,” Mayor Jamieson says. “We also plan to trial a hydrogen fuel cell waste truck later this year and, depending on the success of the trials, determine how we might transition to electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks in future years as technology matures.”
Sunshine Coast locals will soon be able to fly to New York City as a key international airline resumes services from Marcoola. On Saturday, Air New Zealand touched down at Sunshine Coast Airport, restarting direct trans-Tasman travel to Auckland. It coincides with Air New Zealand’s first-ever direct flights between Auckland and New York, starting on September 17. This means Coast residents will soon be able to fly four hours from Marcoola to Auckland and onwards 17 hours to New York. Last Saturday also marked the resumption of transTasman travel direct between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast, with Air New Zealand operating flights each Monday and Saturday until October 15.

A
World War II centenarian is celebrating a momentous milestone – one he shares with the Royal Australian Air Force. After celebrating his 100th birthday on January 18 this year, Buderim’s Jack Alsbury is being recognised for his service to the RAAF, which is also celebrating a century in 2022. Born in Ballarat, Victoria, at the age of 20 Mr Alsbury enlisted in the RAAF, going on to serve as a leading aircraftman in the No.1 Airfield Construction Squad

in Papua New Guinea and Borneo. “I am proud of my service in the RAAF and am extremely impressed that both I and the Air Force turned 100 in the same year,” Mr Alsbury says. “I am grateful for the assistance and recognition they have given me and many other servicemen for many years.” To commemorate his service, Mr Alsbury has been presented with framed Air Force centenary mementos after a visit from RAAF Group Captain Iain Carty from the Amberley base at Ipswich.
Maroochy RSL board member Jon Welch also presented Mr Alsbury with a certificate of recognition for his 60 years of RSL membership in Queensland. He has been a member of the RSL in Australia since 1944, in what is believed to be a record 78 years. Mr Alsbury still lives at home by himself at EdenLea village in Buderim where he receives regular visits from the RSL welfare and assistance service through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. In 1944 he married his late wife Dorothy and the couple spent 70 years together. A carpenter by trade, in 1954 he built a family home for £2012, the equivalent of about $3500. With three children, nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, Mr Alsbury attributes reaching 100 to “hard work, regular exercise and doing what you are told”. The veteran has marched every Anzac Day until this year and his proudest family moment was when he had four generations marching with him in 2015. The keen Carlton supporter also enjoys regularly riding his three-wheel bike around EdenLea and is proud of the 8758 laps he has now completed.
Three projects in the region focusing on upgrades and revitalisations have been recognised at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Awards. A standout was the Nambour Forecourt revamp, taking out both the 2022 AILA QLD Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects and the Regional Achievement Award. The infrastructure upgrades along Sippy Downs Drive boulevard and entryway have been recognised with the Landscape Architecture Award for Infrastructure. Meanwhile, the revitalisation of Cribb Street in Landsborough was a finalist in the Community Contribution category of the Landscape Architecture Awards. AILA Queensland president Tessa Leggo says this year’s entries reflect Australia’s first-class landscape architectural sector. “Ranging from unique artist interventions to regional scale planning, landscape architecture is making a positive impact on how we interact with our spaces and places.” The Nambour Forecourt revamp and Sippy Downs Drive will now proceed to the National Landscape Architecture Awards program.

RESPECTED ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS A well-known Buderim orthopaedic surgeon is set to hang up his scrubs after 37 years practising medicine. Dr Tze-Ki (TK) Ho is a familiar face on the Sunshine Coast, helping patients in the region since 1994. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr Ho completed his medical training in Northern Ireland before moving to the Sunshine Coast to practice orthopaedics. He began as the director of orthopaedics at Nambour General Hospital, before taking up his role at Buderim Private Hospital in 1996. When Dr Ho first began practising on the Sunshine Coast, he says there were not many orthopaedic surgeons in the area, but over the years he has been able to
sub-specialise in shoulder surgery after completing a prestigious shoulder fellowship in Switzerland earlier in his career. Reflecting on his long career with “too many patients to count”, Dr Ho says the most rewarding part is helping his patients and being part of a supportive medical community. “It is a pleasure for me to study the X-rays after an operation that confirm it went well and understand how much it will help my patient. I find this reassuring and rewarding,” Dr Ho says. As his patients are usually treated for episodes of care, Dr Ho says he does not take offence when he is told: “As much as I like you and your work, I hope I don’t have to see you again.” He does enjoy when they stop him in the street to say hello. It is the birth of his first grandchild that is inspiring the decision to retire, and Dr Ho looks forward to spending more time with his family. He says he will miss coming to work each day, especially after almost 30 years watching the hospital grow. “I will miss interacting with all my colleagues and patients of course – it’s hard to say goodbye to people you are so happy to work alongside for so many years. I have watched the Buderim Private Hospital grow over the years from two theatres to eight and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here as the culture of staff is most precious.” Acting director of clinical services Shane Mitchell says Dr Ho has been an asset to the hospital and wider community. “On behalf of Buderim Private Hospital, we would thank you Dr Ho for his incredible service to the people of the Sunshine Coast over the past 25 years and wish him all the very best for a long and happy retirement,” he says.

MOOLOOLAH SPEED LIMIT REDUCED The speed limit on a busy section of Mooloolah Road in Mooloolah Valley has been reduced to improve safety. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) North Coast acting regional director Bonnie Johnstone says the speed limit on a short section between Neill Road and Way Street has reduced from 60 kilometres per hour to 50 kilometres per hour. “The new lower speed limit will align with the existing 50-kilometre per hour limit on the connecting Bray Road, providing a consistent speed through the Mooloolah Valley either side of the railway level crossing,” Ms Johnstone says. The change comes after a speed limit review process where TMR considers a range of factors such as road function, roadside environment, construction standards, prevailing traffic speeds and crash history. The Sunshine Coast Speed Management Committee, which includes representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Council and TMR, then endorse the reduction. The changes came into effect on July 11 and Ms Johnstone is urging all motorists to observe the change, which is outlined with new signage.

A CASE FOR CHANGE
TIME TO STOP THE ABUSE
We can no longer be contained in our quest to use less plastic, writes Jane Stephens, who believes we can all do better.
As he nears retirement, Ashley Robinson is pondering his future, but he can guarantee it won’t be as a cab driver.
T
here is a certain buzz that comes with being first. It’s a heady feeling of breaking new ground, setting the pace and guiding others into pristine, uncharted territory. When that first brings about a positive social change and might even make the world a little better (or at least not quite so bad) the result is an extra-positive high. So it feels a bit sad for Queensland to yet again be a bit behind. This month, the Queensland government announced it would ban lots of fiddly little plasticky items like cotton buds, disposable coffee cups, microbeads in beauty products and the mass release of lighter-than-air balloons. Goodness knows it has been a long time coming, but the clamp will not be applied until next year to allow businesses to find alternatives. That’s all very good, but others are doing better. Making Queensland looking like a scruffy laggard, South Australia this week removed liability from shops that let their customers bring their own plastic containers. They won’t make it compulsory, and vendors are still responsible for their food’s safety, but they have cleared the way.
We have known we had to change our plastic-dependent ways for years. We have learnt that for all its handiness, plastic is a long-lasting disaster for our world and we need to stop making more. So it strikes me as strange that so many of us don’t act until we are made to, particularly with government data showing 90 per cent of us support more limits. We have come a long way in a short time in adjusting our attitude. Remember the kerfuffle over phasing out plastic shopping bags? But we adapted. Last year, we said goodbye to straws, stirrers and expanded polystyrene and we’re doing okay. The attitude with passing on plastic, and on changing our consumer behaviour generally, used to be ‘what difference can one person make?’ We now know the answer is lots when there are lots of ones. Communities have the power of transformation. So let’s get ahead of the government and encourage our local butchers, supermarkets, delis and food outlets to let us use our own containers. Our community and environment need us not to wait for instructions to go that extra mile.

s I near retirement, redundancy or being put out to pasture, one thing I am 100 per cent sure of is I will need to find a job of some description to keep me out of the house for my own safety and old mate’s mental health. I mentioned this to a friend of mine a few weeks ago and she suggested I take up Uber driving. I thought she was joking but after she made a few points I started to think it may be an okay idea. That was until recently. Fair dinkum, who would drive a taxi? I caught one the other night and from the moment I jumped in until I got home old mate complained about everything possible to do with taxi driving, Uber and the world in general. Who the bloody hell would do the job, particularly the night shift, being at the mercy of every idiot in town. I guess the answer is people who want to work, who want to contribute to the economy. So shouldn’t those people be treated with respect and protected from knobs that can’t behave themselves? Bus drivers on public transport are the other victims of idiots; again there is little or no respect.
Some of these violent souls always have an excuse – alcohol, drugs, personal problems, someone made them do it – but I think we are all missing the point. Ask an Indian, Nepalese or Pakistan taxi driver what he thinks of an intoxicated Australian customer and they will usually just give you a smile and a shake of the head. I have seen it, some bogan gets in the cab and starts calling them driver or cabbie instead of asking their name and by the end of the trip is hurling abuse, all because some poor soul is trying to earn a living. It is about time judges in this country start punishing people for their actions, not slapping their wrists with a good behaviour bond. There has to be consequences, particularly for assault, physical or verbal, on an innocent party. As the song goes, “we’re doing fine in the lucky country”. Well in my opinion we are being far too tolerant to the wrong people and less to the right people. So I think I probably should keep looking for another line of work in semiretirement as I could easily end up a victim or a perpetrator, depending on which way the judge looked at it.

A BITTER END Sami Muirhead’s heart goes out to former federal minister Julie Bishop, who has just been the victim of a public dumping.
I
was cringing as I read about the details of the break-up of former foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop and her beau of eight years. His name is David Panton and he is a successful businessperson who has been her plus one for a long time. But he reportedly dumped Jules at a restaurant, and not just any restaurant. Eastbank restaurant in Sydney is a tourist trap where the menu warns diners that seagulls can swoop at any moment. The stress of this alone sparks anxiety in me, let alone adding the fact this cad told Julie (surrounded by diners) that their relationship was over. Ditched to the fancy curb. Ouch! A girl would not know if she should cover her chips from the swooping seagulls or hold her hand over her broken heart. Tone-deaf Dave then went to the media and confirmed he had ended the union and went as far as saying it was during a meal of fish and chips at Eastbank. The guy is 61 and supposedly worldly and intelligent. Surely such matters should be conducted in private. We all have a bad break-up story. I have been the dumper at times and once I ditched a guy because of his obsession with Spider-Man. He was a grown man and had a Spider-Man tattoo and a Spider-Man doona cover. A girlfriend once ditched a bloke because he refused to wear fake tan. Another friend broke up with a guy because he wore yellow denim jeans on the third date. But back to our classy Julie. She and David the destroyer were at a dinner party hosted by Prince Charles at St James’s Palace in London just a week before their split. He has also been her date to dozens of red carpet events over the years. Jules, I say drink lots of wine and go gentle on yourself. Watch chick flicks and eat pasta and chocolate. I recommend the movie The Vow or anything with Jennifer Lopez in it and endless Bounty bars with a hot water bottle in bed. You and your fabulous pearl earrings (the woman really does have amazing earrings) will bounce back before you can say “see you later loser”, and remember, today’s fish and chip wrapper is news about someone else tomorrow.

PAINT PREP Planning to paint the exterior of your home? The experts at Haymes Paint share their best tips and tricks to help you prepare. 1. DETERMINE THE CONDITION OF YOUR EXISTING PAINT To avoid blistering or flaking over time, it’s important to check the condition of your existing paint. Do this by cutting an X into the surface with a sharp knife or blade, press some masking tape firmly over the X and then pull it off in one swift motion. If any existing paint is stuck to the tape or lifts the edge of the X then the surface is not a suitable base and will need to be removed by scraping or sanding it back. 2. CLEAN THE SURFACE Thoroughly wash away any chalky residue, dirt, dust or mould from the surface. The easiest and most timeeffective way to clean a large area is by using a high-pressure washer. 3. START SANDING One of the most crucial preparation steps is sanding the exterior walls. This will even out, smooth and remove existing paint from the surface. 4. CHECK THE WEATHER When preparing to paint outdoors, the weather will play a vital role in the outcome. Stark, direct sunlight and
extreme heat make it difficult to get an even application as the paint will dry very quickly. Very windy conditions will also cause the paint to dry too quickly and can deposit dust onto the surface. Rain, of course, will cause the paint to run. Try to plan the paint job when there are mild temperatures and minimal wind. 5. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCT Finding a paint that will be able to withstand everything the Australian weather throws at it is very important. It’s recommended that you use a high-quality acrylic exterior paint such as Haymes Solashield as this is a specifically formulated exterior paint. As it is an acrylic base, it has a high UV resistance and will last longer than solvent-based enamel paints. 6. STAY SAFE Look up! When moving ladders or planks around your site don’t forget to look for overhead power lines. Also, when using ladders and work platforms ensure they have a firm footing so you can stand on them safely. Modern-day equipment contains self-levellers on the legs.

NDIS FEATURE “Our disability and aged-care courses are a great opportunity for those who have been out of work or have not been able to find stable employment. We have many parents who want to re-enter the workforce as well as retail and hospitality workers who are looking for a positive change in their lives,” Ms Du-Shane says. A career in care can be challenging at times but the rewards are huge. NEW LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM LAUNCHING ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Are you, or someone you know, looking to enhance literacy, self-confidence, independence and work placement opportunities? Adults with intellectual disability who would like to be a part of an exciting new program are invited to take part in Latch-On. Latch-On is an innovative, evidencebased literacy program that changes the lives of young adults with intellectual disabilities. The program provides opportunities for students to increase their literacy skills in a post-secondary school environment, using technology to enhance literacy, self-confidence, independence and work placement opportunities. Latch-On combines traditional literacy and numeracy teaching styles with technology instruction, also including health and fitness education. The program has been developed by The University of Queensland and is backed by more than 20 years of research. The program will be delivered two days per week for two years and is aimed
at young adults who have goals of employment, further education or general independence. Key elements of the program are: • It is research based, developed by The University of Queensland. • It runs two days per week for two years, and may be funded through NDIS plans. • It is for students with employment, further education or general independence goals. • It offers scaffolding activities (activities
become more challenging throughout the program). Down Syndrome Queensland has partnered with Sapphire Support to host the program, in a modern training room facilities in Forest Glen.

CRUISING INTO CONVENIENCE WITH PRINCESS With so many restrictions and changes to travel over the past two years, I was curious and excited to experience one of the first cruises to resume in Australia. Princess made it extremely easy by taking all our personal information in the lead-up to the cruise so that getting through the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal was a breeze. Once onboard, aside from remembering to wear a mask when entering the restaurants, it was very much a holiday as normal. The friendly Princess staff were always at hand to welcome and help us. TIME FOR A CHANGE OF HOUSING POLICIES A new report suggests government first homebuyer assistance schemes have unintended negative consequences. WORDS: Gail Forrer.
R
EIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella has called for the First Home Owners’ Grant availability to be extended beyond the limitations of new constructions or the purchase of a new home, saying that because of these constraints, the grant has become “virtually redundant”. She says the latest Queensland government budget, announced at a time when construction of new homes has ground to a screeching halt, has missed a valuable opportunity to implement key reforms and bring forward creative solutions to assist Queenslanders towards home ownership. “Despite a construction sector in crisis, and the government itself conceding that builders and building supplies are rare as hens’ teeth, the First Home Owners’ Grant continues to overlook established housing, remaining restricted to new construction,” Ms Mercorella says. “With rising construction costs and financial entry barriers making building or purchasing a brand-new home simply unfeasible for many first homebuyers, surely it’s time to extend this initiative to established housing options.”
Meanwhile, a report undertaken for the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) this month reveals Australian governments spent more than $20.5 billion supporting first homebuyers (FHBs) in the decade to 2021 through FHB grants, stamp duty concessions and other cash grants. The report, Assisting First Homebuyers: an International Policy Review, asked if such assistance expanded access to home ownership to those whose entry would be otherwise delayed or impossible or made the cost of home
ownership more affordable and less risky. Research found the Australian FHB assistance measures primarily act to bring forward first home purchase by households already close to doing so, rather than opening home ownership access to households otherwise excluded. In doing so, these measures add to demand and hence house prices. Direct Collective managing director Mal Cayley says in essence the report is correct. He says FHB schemes are a typical government policy with great intent that
fail in the execution as they are not solving the core issue. “FHB have market entry affordability issues due to a lack of supply. If there was sufficient supply then there would be more competition in the market for buyers and property would be more affordable. “It is a typical policy of pretending to solve issues by promoting a popular policy that is easy to digest and therefore ‘vote worthy’, when in effect, FHB grants, in a supply crisis, harm first homebuyers.” He says the effects of the pandemic, massive increase in construction costs and supply chain challenge have contributed to fewer properties in the market but a growing population to consume them. “With fewer properties to meet demand, competition is high and those who can afford more can outbid the market.” He says there is only answer to make property affordable for FHB and that is supply. “We need a dramatic, pivoting change in housing policy to deal with this crisis. We need all kinds of built form, predominately the missing middle (homes such as units, terrace homes, duplex etcetera), in all price categories to unblock the system.”

he last block of land on the dry side of Oceanic Drive South, Wurtulla fetched $1,325,000 at a weekend auction. Ray White real estate agent Adam Budd says there were six registered bidders and on the day there were three active bidders, with a crowd of 75 people turning up for the big event. “The bidding started at $750,000 and went up in increments of $100,000,” Mr Budd says. Finally, after a slight pause and words with the potential buyers, Mr Budd says the property reached the successful selling price. Mr Budd says until the auction, the land had been in the hands of the same owner for 22 years, and he had conducted intermittent conversations with him over the past five years. “He then decided that based on the current climate it was time to sell.” A family from Little Mountain purchased the property with the goal of building their dream home on it. North Shore Realty agent Jay Pashley says both vendor and buyer were delighted with the sale price of
