From the editor It’s no secret the live music scene is one of the industries hardest hit by the COVID pandemic, and although there is still a way to go, it’s great to see things slowly return to normal for our talented local artists. One of our biggest advocates for the arts is revered songbird and ARIA Award-winning performer Katie Noonan. A Eumundi local for the past 15 years, Katie is passionate about the importance of music to connect the community. As a long-time supporter of our young talent, Katie also founded the Eumundi School of Rock seven years ago, offering free training and mentorship to up-andcoming young singers. The superwoman songstress is also at the helm of Sunshine Sounds Festival, which is making a much-anticipated return to the Sunshine Coast later this month. Candice Holznagel caught up with

Katie to discover what this year’s festival has in store. With an awesome line-up of local talent, the all-ages event is definitely one to put in your diary! Why you can get the flu after

your shot While getting your ﬂu shot is as important as ever this winter, you could still develop the ﬂu even if you’re vaccinated, and there is a good reason why.

influenza A and influenza B. The 2022 influenza vaccine is quadrivalent (targets four distinct viruses): two influenza A viruses (subtypes H3N2 and H1N1) and two influenza B viruses from distinct lineages. Within each flu A subtype, further genetic variation can arise, with mutations (known as genetic drift) generating many viral variants that are classified into ‘clades’ and sub-clades. H3N2 is particularly good at generating lots of diversity in this way. So predicting exactly which H3N2 virus to target in the vaccine is especially difficult. A key challenge for flu vaccines is the decision for which virus to target has to be made months ahead of time. The the H3N2 virus in the Australian flu vaccine (A/Darwin/9/2021) was chosen in September 2021 to enable the vaccine to be manufactured and distributed in time for the 2022 winter. There is no guarantee a different H3N2 virus that isn’t so well targeted by the vaccine won’t arrive in the country in

absence. Suddenly, major flu outbreaks are occurring across the country, catching many Australians off guard. Flu vaccinations aim to protect against four influenza viruses that cause disease in humans (two subtypes from influenza A and two from influenza B). But vaccine-mediated protection varies each year depending on how well the vaccine matches the disease-causing influenza viruses that are circulating at a given time. Vaccine effectiveness – a real-world measure based on the proportion of vaccinated people who still develop the flu – ranges from 16 per cent to 60 per cent. However, it’s still important to get your flu shot. If you’ve been vaccinated and still get the flu, you’re less likely to get as sick. Of the four types of influenza viruses that exist in nature, two cause significant disease in humans:

the months leading into winter and start causing disease. Another factor that has made predicting which H3N2 virus to target in the vaccine uniquely difficult for 2022 is the lack of data on which viruses were dominant in the preceding flu seasons, both in Australia and on the other side of the Equator. With travel restrictions easing towards the end of 2021, flu cases did start to reappear during the northern hemisphere 2021-22 winter. But the lack of flu cases during the preceding seasons (due to COVID) meant the data used to predict which viruses to target was inadequate. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) analysed data from more than 3000 children and found a vaccine effectiveness of just 16 per cent protection from mild to moderate disease from H3N2. Protection from more severe disease was just 14 per cent. Data about flu vaccine effectiveness in the southern hemisphere 2022 winter isn’t yet available, and it’s unclear how protective the current vaccine is against

the currently circulating disease-causing subtypes. While H3N2 viruses appears to be driving some disease now, other flu viruses may become more prevalent later in the season. The flu vaccine is a quadrivalent vaccine, so in addition to influenza A H3N2, it will protect against another influenza A subtype (H1N1) and two distinct lineages of influenza B virus. These viruses don’t change as rapidly as H3N2, so it’s more likely the vaccine will give better protection against these other influenza viruses. Even if vaccine protection against H3N2 is lower than usual this year, the vaccine could make the difference between recovering at home versus ending up in hospital. The flu vaccine offers the highest level of protection in the first three to four months after vaccination. The season generally peaks between June and September – although this year we have seen a much earlier than usual start to the flu season. It’s unclear whether this early start will mean a longer flu season or an early finish. So it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone aged six months and over, but are particularly important for people who are more at risk of complications from influenza, including: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over; • children aged six months to five years; • pregnant women; • people aged 65 years or over; and • people aged six months or over who have medical conditions that mean they have a higher risk of getting serious disease. stage As the Australian performing arts and music industries continue their slow recovery from the effects of COVID, Eumundi local Katie Noonan is doing all she can to reconnect the community through music, with the second annual Sunshine Sounds Festival. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

he past two years have pathed a rocky road for the arts sector. Deemed non-essential, the industry – like many others – took a substantial hit during the pandemic. The number of gigs cancelled is in the vicinity of 374,000, while arts and recreation industry employees’ work hours decreased by 21 per cent between the March and June quarters of 2022. This compares with the all-industry average of five per cent. The Parliament of Australia’s The Impact of COVID-19 report also revealed that it was the second hardest hit industry with regard to job loss, and its recovery has been deemed the slowest. Leading arts and culture think tank A New Approach (ANA) predicts, “It could be years before this industry division fully recovers, due to the public’s discomfort with being in shared spaces like live performance venues. Ongoing social distancing requirements and the risk of events and venues being shut down is likely to continue undermining both consumer and investor confidence in the sector.” Sadly, the cost to the nation has been more than a financial one, according to Sunshine Coast-based musician Katie Noonan. The five-time ARIA Award-winning artist believes the arts are essential to

“being human” and denying people access to performance affects their wellbeing and mental health. “Music is the great connector, the great equaliser, the greatest maker of friends,” she tells My Weekly Preview. “I honestly believe there is nothing more powerful than music in order to bring us together and realise our commonality rather than our difference. “I believe music is the greatest tool for our collective wellbeing and my wish is to do what I can to bring the magic of music to young people’s lives and in particular people in regional Australia. “Having lived regionally for almost 15 years, I know the innate power of the arts in our communities and am passionate about ensuring world-quality programs are not just presented in our major cities.” This is exactly what Ms Noonan has ensured with the creation of the Sunshine Sounds Festival. To be staged at the Eumundi Showgrounds on July 29 and 30, the second annual family-friendly festival also marks a special occasion for Katie and her brother Tyrone Noonan who are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their former band george’s debut album, the award-winning Polyserena. “It is very special to be back making music with my big bro Tyrone and my son Dexter. Our band started in the lounge room of my uni share house in early 1996

in Brisbane with two sets of siblings jamming together. My bro had just returned from living in Europe and I had just started uni,” Ms Noonan says. “I was 18, so only a little older than Dexter is now. Twenty-six years later to be celebrating our debut album with my

17-year-old-son and two wonderful young musicians – Brandon Mamata on guitars and Steele Chabau on bass – feels like a wonderful full circle moment with multiple generations sharing music together. “This album was the soundtrack of me becoming a woman and trying to find my place in the world. It’s funny how songs morph with time and they come to mean something different. “That young Katie still has a lot to teach me and I look forward to singing her words in this very special concert with my big bro and my first-born son.” Sunshine Sounds features a varied line-up including ARIA Award-winning performer Clare Bowditch and band, Asha Jefferies, Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers, Andrea Kirwin, Band of Frequencies and more. No stranger to the spotlight, 13-year-old First Nations singer Layla has shared the stage with Ms Noonan, and in April she performed a duet with Uncle Archie Roach at the National Folk Festival in Canberra. “Before I auditioned for ESOR [in 2020], I had never had a singing lesson; I just used to sing songs around the house,” she says.

FORMER DETECTIVE SERGEANT JOINS SUNSHINE COAST CHARITY BOARD Tara Dunn is bringing years of experience from the New South Wales Police to the No More Fake Smiles board. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

atching a policewoman help others in a ’90s New South Wales Police advertising campaign featuring The Hollies’ He Aint’ Heavy, He’s My Brother inspired a two-decade long career in the police service for Tara Dunn. The former detective sergeant worked a number of murder strike forces, including the murder of a child, as well as major drug importation before moving into the State Crime Command Child Abuse Squad. It was during her time in the Child Abuse Squad that she met Annie Jones and Tracey Morris, two inspirational women who went on to become the co-founders of Sunshine Coast-based charity No More Fake Smiles. Now retired from the police service, Ms Dunn has thrown her support behind the charity, which assists child victims of sexual abuse with judicial advocacy and support as well as funding therapy of choice so they can emotionally heal from the trauma they have endured. Ms Dunn recalls her shock when Ms Jones showed up to police interviews happy and smiling while making statements about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather over three years. “It would always disarm me how Annie had the ability to put a smile on her face even when her world was crumbling around her,” she says. “It was always my concern that one day, the smile would fade and the mask could no longer continue to be worn.”

The long-term mental health effects are very real for victims. The Child Family Community Australia Paper 11, released in 2013, show there is a 10 times increased risk of suicidal thoughts and 15 times increased risk of suicide attempts. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 15,400 children aged 19 and under reported sexual abuse in 2020, yet Ms Dunn says the topic is still one few people want to acknowledge. “It is time for the Australian community to recognise that this horrendous crime against our children does exist and will continue to exist if we do not as a community band together to make our community safer for children

and more secure for our victims to disclose,” she says. When Ms Jones disclosed to her mother, Ms Morris believed her. Ms Dunn says she has met only “a handful” of mothers while in the Child Abuse Squad who instantly believe their child. “Tracey acted immediately to ensure the safety of Annie. This cannot be emphasised enough,” Ms Dunn says. “Tracey went above and beyond to secure evidence and ultimately assist the prosecution with the conviction of the offender. At the same time, Tracey supported Annie, her three other children and a household. She continued to work and care for her family knowing

that her world had changed for ever.” Ms Dunn joined the No More Fake Smiles board in 2021 and her wealth of knowledge has been an asset to the charity. From her observations, Ms Dunn says sexual abuse within a household often divides families, leaving the victim on their own. This is a substantial social issue because 85 per cent of offenders abuse children within their family. “Having a network like No More Fake Smiles can be the factor between a successful trial with the victim engaged and stable or a trial that will not proceed due to the instability of the witness, which results in an offender walking free and no justice being served,” she says. The charity is currently funding a 16-year-old girl who was rescued from a cult and lives in a women’s shelter, a four-year-old boy who was abused by his step-brother, and is advocating for an 18-year-old girl who is in the midst of criminal proceedings following sexual abuse by her brother.

Queensland is set to ban plastic microbeads, polystyrene packing peanuts and plastic-stemmed cotton buds by September 1, 2023, with the state government unveiling its proposed five-year road map to phase out harmful, single-use plastics. Environment minister Meaghan Scanlon says the mass release of lighter-thanair balloons will also be banned next year, while new minimum standards will be introduced for heavy plastic bags, requiring them to be tested for reusability and the ability to be recycled once they have reached the end of their life span. The road map comes off the back of new survey results, which reveals 91 per cent of Queenslanders back further bans on single-use plastics.

The Sunshine Coast’s first roller-coaster experience has been officially opened at Aussie World, with a uniquely Australian twist. The Dingo Racer ride, which tops 72 kilometres per hour, tells the story of the resident Dingo who is trying to escape from the Mad Max-themed attraction. A FORCE FOR GOOD SunCentral’s incoming CEO is ready to help bring the region’s new CBD to life for the benefit of the community. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

hen it comes to finding someone who thrives on the challenge of driving positive social and economic development, it’s hard to go past Amanda Yeates. No stranger to the world of highperformance roles, Ms Yeates has had a career steering complex programs to delivery and advocating for workplace diversity. Now, she is set to hang up her

hat as deputy director general at the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and is shifting her focus to a project that will shape the Sunshine Coast into the future. At the end of July, Ms Yeates will begin the role of CEO at SunCentral as the region’s masterplanned Maroochydore CBD continues to grow. Ms Yeates’ recent appointment includes her among a growing number of

women in CEO or senior positions across the Sunshine Coast, establishing it as a diverse region of opportunity and empowerment. Moving here in 2013 to start a regional director role at TMR for the Sunshine Coast, Ms Yeates progressed to a statewide role, leading the management of the department’s $5 billion annual capital works program, plus a workforce of more than 3500 staff. She is also committed to fostering an environment and culture that supports a vibrant, diverse, collaborative, safe, rewarding and high-performing workplace. The mother of two teenage daughters – who enjoys walking her dogs at Point Cartwright and riding her electric bike in her spare time – tells My Weekly Preview she looks forward to putting her wealth of knowledge into her new position. “I’ve always been really passionate about the role that public infrastructure and the delivery of infrastructure can play in social and economic vibrancy in regions,” Ms Yeates says. “What the Sunshine Coast is doing with the development of the Maroochydore CBD is incredibly unique and it’s not that often you get to be involved from the ground up in a masterplanned town centre. “To be able to be in a role that has the potential to make such a positive difference to my community is just fantastic.” Forging the way forward for new industries, Ms Yeates says the CBD will allow the next generation of industry leaders to find jobs in their own backyard. “The Sunshine Coast is going to be a real cornerstone for knowledgebased and high-value new industries as sectors continue to grow. The

opportunity the CBD presents with the development of these new industries – and skills development and training – there is a real possibility the next generation will not have to go elsewhere to seek out those jobs.” Ms Yeates joins the likes of Sunshine Coast Council CEO Emma Thomas and University of the Sunshine Coast ViceChancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett as some of the leading women in the region. As someone who has been the first woman to hold several positions in her

Council charts right course with new mobility maps The Sunshine Coast’s new mobility maps are turning heads and wheels after going live on Council’s website. between Maroochydore and Mooloolaba generally as being of a very high standard. The maps are now live on Council’s website after being generated, checked and compared for consistency before being uploaded online – allowing everyone to find their best path, according to their needs and ability. Categorising clear routes minimises mobility difficulties and allows the user to make informed choices before visiting locations across the region. An ‘effort rating’ is based on the grade of the path, the surface condition, and the cross fall of the footpath which helps identify the easiest way and requiring the least effort to get around the coastal strip. The maps have also identified where there may be limited access due to the steepness of a

site or the grade of a pathway. To ensure beach visits are simple and enjoyable for all, next up, 18 beach accesses within the existing mapping area (Cotton Tree to Mooloolaba) will be mapped to indicate if they have a sealed surface and/or lead to either the beach or a viewing platform. The maps will include the north section at Beach Parade, Maroochydore (BA 146) to Mooloolaba Spit carpark in the south (BA 195). In coming months, the maps will also include the pathway network around the Sunshine Coast University Hospital precinct. As the program develops and as budget allows, Council is aiming to deliver mapping for other locations including hinterland towns. BEACH SAFETY ON THE SUNSHINE COAST The region’s coastline is still showing the effects of recent wild weather. Be careful around the steep cliffs that formed as a result of the swell and tides and avoid digging tunnels. SALVOS OFFERS NEW HOPE IN CALOUNDRA

t’s sure to become a competitive game when three generations of one family show off their skills on the tennis court. Lucky for the Schouteten family, it is a chance to ace their technique and continue a long-lasting legacy. Andy, John and Ben are all part of the Landsborough Tennis Club where they often enjoy playing doubles. John remembers growing up watching his dad Andy, now 82, and mother Mia play tennis at a local club in the Netherlands. “At that time in the 1970s there wasn’t much to do for the kids, so my brother Guido and myself came along and also started playing tennis,” John says. “At the weekends and school holidays my brother and I always played. The tennis courts were like our second home. There certainly was family rivalry between my

brother and myself for many years. My brother eventually becoming the better player!” The passion has not been lost on John’s sons Ben and Tom. Ben, 15, is making a name for himself on the local tennis scene, recently representing Sunshine Coast Grammar School at a tournament in Rockhampton. “The team effort resulted in third place in the state and he also competed recently in the 2022 Elite Tennis International and won the men’s final to collect his first bit of prize money,” John says. “Ben’s long-term goal is to gain a scholarship in the USA with his tennis.” While his sons are still actively competing, in their downtime the family enjoys a casual game at their local club. “We often play doubles now; it’s all in good spirit,” John says. “It is also a nice

family outing where the whole family catches up. “Tennis is a great game. It brings people together and is for all ages and skills. It’s a game you can play a lifetime and, of course, there are numerous health benefits.” To encourage more people to the sport, Landsborough Tennis Club will hold a family fun day on July 24 from 10am to 1pm. It will include a free clinic for juniors and seniors, plus a demonstration featuring rising tennis stars on Sunshine Coast and a mini doubles tournament. Club president Dan Black says the club will also launch a Junior Aces program, which will be a first of its kind in Queensland. The 13-week program, in conjunction with Tennis Australia, will be offered at no cost to the Sunshine Coast community. “In these extremely challenging times, the Junior Aces series allows parents who are burdened and overwhelmed with the increased cost of living the opportunity for their kids to participate in a professionally managed sports program with zero outlay,” Mr Black says. “We can even provide the use of equipment for those kids who don’t have any.” He says the clinic will provide a holistic approach and include diet and behavioural sport psychology. “This is an extremely important concept with the challenges families, and in particular parents, deal with on a day-to-day basis.” The clinic is available for children of all skill levels aged between six and 16 and runs from August 6 to October 29. The Salvation Army Caloundra’s new location, House4Hope, will provide community members with a safe space to engage with their local Salvos. The House4Hope launched following the Red Shield Appeal, which raised more than $20,000 in the Caloundra region in April, May and June. Caloundra Corps Aux-Lieutenant Karen Clark says The Salvation Army is grateful to the community, which always rallies together to support the Red Shield Appeal. “The money raised this year will help us serve the Caloundra community at our new location and live out the Salvos’ mission and our local hope that no one should do life alone,” she says. METROLL EXPANSION A SHOW OF CONFIDENCE IN THE COAST One of Australia’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of steel building products is showing its confidence in the region, investing in a new $10 million facility in Bells Creek. Metroll established its Sunshine Coast branch 22 years ago and is part of a nationwide network of 29 branches. It recently moved from its 1000-square metre shed in Warana to a new 9000-square

Cr Terry Landsberg Division two Some great projects for our division two community were included in Council’s recent $847 million 2022-23 budget. Highlights include big-ticket items such as $5.3 million for the initial construction costs for the Caloundra District Library, $1.3 million for the Caloundra Indoor Sports roof replacement and $880,000 for the Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade project. This corridor upgrade is an important piece of infrastructure for the safety of all road users in our division. Some of the budget’s smaller projects for our community are just as important and to name but a small few, I am grateful for investments such as $250,000 for the revetment walls at Golden Beach (as part of the Bribie Island Breakthrough Action

Plan); $102,000 for the viewing deck at Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club; and a $50,000 lights contribution for the Caloundra Cricket Club. Encouraging active transport also featured in this budget and I would like to thank the students at Caloundra State School – along with the other eight trial schools in the region – for participating in the RideScore Active Schools program. I’ve heard that even during our recent rain events the kids wouldn’t stop riding to school. Well done! Little patients of local outpatient departments, emergency wards, operating theatres, maternity, neonatal, allied health and critical care departments have all benefited from the appeal over the past 22 years. The Give Me 5 wish list has featured several project positions – temporary salary positions that visionary health staff believe will pave the way to a better experience for families relying on local health services.

Years ago, GM5 funded a six-month trial to establish a child protection liaison officer to help time-challenged foster families navigate the complex health system. It was a first in Queensland, and the success of the project not only led to the appointment of a permanent position locally, but also across the state. Years later some of our most vulnerable children will be further supported by a clinical nurse consultant (CNC) working with at-risk mothers in situations of domestic violence and child safety intervention. This 12-month role will offer support that currently isn’t available to mums and babies on the Coast, in situations most of us can’t imagine. Another CNC will work with young adults and adolescents for the next year, getting ready for the adolescent ward set to open in the next year or two at SCUH. This, and the project positions funded last year, working right now with young adults with lived experience – and their families – to improve mental health services, will help fill gaps in the model of care for troubled teens and early adults. As we round off on another appeal, we prepare to tick some big projects off our wish list and start down the path towards better health services for all our families. An impressive 17-metre-high artwork has been unveiled at the Point Cartwright water reservoir. The ‘Subsurface’ design was repainted with local artists The Brightsiders as part of Unitywater’s Community Artwork Program. Unitywater’s Katherine Gee says the mural was originally painted in 2016 and needed maintenance after weathering the elements over the years. “We asked the community what they wanted to see and they voted to keep the original design,” she says. “The Norfolk pines on the original artwork have changed to Bunya pines to be respectful of the cultural heritage of this area.”

FOREST GLEN VILLAGE CENTRE TAKING SHAPE A multimillion-dollar shopping centre expansion is taking shape at a Sunshine Coast village. Three new buildings have emerged from the ground at Forest Glen Village Centre, which is set to become a vibrant hub for surrounding communities and travellers using the Bruce Highway. With three stages of development planned for the 6.6-hectare site at 354-370 Mons Road, it will service nearby schools and

Non-eligible drivers taking up disability parking spots is a problem for those who need them, but Jane Stephens thinks she has a solution.

After a Tony Kelly restaurant popped up in his neighbourhood, Ashley Robinson has got to thinking about cuisines of days gone by.

here are few lower acts than parking in spots reserved for those with disabilities, and even though I don’t generally like conflict, the community policing of the spaces makes my heart swell a little. It was a situation I observed last week at Kawana. Like seagulls on a chip, one, then two able-bodied people jumped in and raised their voices in defence of the disability space. It was not pretty. The would-be parker reversed out and slunk off, rightly cowed and henpecked. The defenders of the space did little fist pumps. Disability spaces are necessary because without them, people with mobility problems would be excluded from libraries, sports grounds, educational institutions and community spaces, and denying them access violates antidiscrimination legislation. Under Queensland law, a driver who slots into a designated spot without a permit can be slugged with a $533 fine. The permits are hard to get: applicants pay $18.65 to the Australian Disability Parking Scheme with a satchel of paperwork, and only some are successful in getting their hands on the purple prize.

A person must be deemed by a medico to always need a wheelchair; or have their ability to walk severely restricted by a permanent medical condition; or be severely visually impaired; or to have their ability to walk severely restricted by a temporary condition they will have for six months or more. The permits are for mobility issues, and apparently our population’s mobility is so poor that the number of people who now qualify for permits is outstripping available spots. Advocates say the abuse of disability parks is increasing and I have a solution to the shortage of spaces: give the ‘parents with prams’ spots to those with disabilities and take the seniors’ ones as well. The seniors who really need a special park would qualify for the disability permit anyway and even when my three kids were little, I did not understand why parents had special parks. Parks for parents and seniors are a courtesy, not a legal requirement. Disability parks are needed for people to give them equal access to facilities and include them in the community. Parents and oldies should step back for those who can’t step out at all.

ur eating habits have certainly changed over my 65 years on this planet. Meat and three veg was a staple when I was growing up, a salad was maybe tomato, lettuce and onion, roast chicken was for special occasions but fish was a staple depending on how many bream the old man caught. I remember when pizza became a thing. Mum used to call it ‘peesa’ and I would try to correct her and even point out crooner Dean Martin called it pizza but she could not get her head or tongue around it and was very suspicious. Same as Chinese food – I don’t think I actually had any until I was old enough to drive as Mum was very suspicious of that too. How times have changed. Getting back to the peesa, just recently fine food baron Tony Kelly and his gang opened up an Italian joint just up the road from me at Bokarina and it appears to be going gangbusters. It’s no surprise as locals have been waiting decades for something on the beach side of Nicklin Way to pop up. It reminds me of another food baron, the late John Douglas, who also had the

Midas touch. Every time he opened a new joint the customers followed. I would ask him what was on the new menu, he would always laugh and say “it all comes out of the same bucket, I just call it another name”. Like JD, the new mob seems to have the same gift – everywhere they go the locals come out. It seems Tony Kelly has hovered between fine dining to burgers and everything in between and come up with a very successful model. I wonder what will be next for the new gang and I might have an idea for Tony and his team. Back in the day fine diners would be teased with mouth-watering descriptions of truffles or risotto, where it was sourced, how hard it was to obtain, how rare and how lucky they were to be able enjoy it. Maybe they could start a new chain of outlets and call it The Green Stuff – black-market lettuce and green vegetables because it is nearly impossible to buy them for anything like a reasonable price. Back in the day meat and three veg seemed so boring, as did lettuce and tomato. Now it’s a delicacy, right up there with the theatre of a Tony Kelly outlet. JD would be proud.

appy 90th birthday to the ABC! Our beloved Aunty is celebrating nine decades of broadcasting. It was in July, 1932 that radio announcer Conrad Charlton sat alongside then-prime minister Joseph Lyons and said: “This is the Australian Broadcasting Commission.” Since then, the ABC has educated, entertained and informed us all, firstly on radio, followed by a television service in 1956. If only all our family members were as fun, intelligent and supportive as the ABC. And my family members could take a lesson from Aunty when it comes to equality, fighting racism and battling sexism! If only my family babysat as much as Play School did for me when my kids were little and at home. It is the most trusted media brand in the country and reaches more than two-thirds of the population each week. Wow! The ABC is just part of our fabric. I grew up only allowed to watch the ABC. This means I cannot stand Monkey or Doctor Who as I binge-watched both cult shows for years while eating my lamb chops and mashed potato for dinner in the ’80s. But I adored Play School as a

child. It took me away to magical lands and made me feel safe as Noni Hazlehurst and John Waters beamed to me every morning from the black and white TV set. Fast forward 40 years and all three of my kids loved Play School as well. It makes me nostalgic to this day when I hear the iconic theme and I would do anything to go back for just one day when my kids were little so we could snuggle up together and watch Play School. As an adult I have spent many nights watching SeaChange, Australian Story and Anh’s Brush With Fame and, of course, Kath & Kim before it turned to commercial stations. And who can forget the Bananas in Pyjamas theme song? My brother and I spent every weekend watching Countdown thinking we were the cool kids in town. These days I am a bandit for any cooking shows and the divine Maggie Beer has made a birthday cake for the ABC and presented the recipe to our nation. It is a “symphony of citrus cake with macadamia, lemon curd and buttercream”. How good would it be to be sitting down with a slice of it, a hot cuppa and watching an episode of Rake? Happy days and thanks for the memories ABC!

he last few years have been tough, revealing that many people would benefit from caring more for their mental health. For many, there is now less of a stigma attached to seeking mental health support, and they feel it’s okay to put their hand up and say, ‘I need help’. In the past, it was common to think that mental health support was only required when you reached a crisis.

Today there is recognition that early support can prevent more serious impacts to mental health down the track. Ms Hawkins says a good barometer of wellbeing is asking yourself questions such as, ‘Am I finding it more difficult to cope with daily life?’, ‘How are my relationships?’ and ‘How am I thinking and feeling about myself and others?’ Some of the benefits of seeing a psychologist can include a chance to find unbiased support; prevent ‘bumps’ from becoming ‘crashes’; reducing self-defeating thoughts; developing resilience; managing stress; mastering impulse control and building healthy boundaries. Psychologists are trained to perform a detailed assessment of a person’s mental health and to work with them to help identify what’s going on for them. A psychologist can help their patient to develop tools and strategies to manage and cope with life events and mental health conditions or symptoms in both the short and long term.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a non-surgical procedure that involves the insertion of a needle-like probe into the skin. This probe delivers radiofrequency waves to target nerves that cause pain. RFA is safe and effective with minimal recovery time. The results are typically long-lasting but can be permanent. RFA is especially beneficial to those seeking an alternative to surgery and are not getting the desired results from non-operative measures such as injection therapy and lifestyle modifications. The procedure is completed in about 20 minutes, with sedation administered to the patient through an IV catheter. Unlike surgery, RFA involves no incision. The patient may experience some discomfort at the radiofrequency site for a short period, but this discomfort can be treated with common, over-the-counter medication. RFA is considered a low-risk procedure. While some complications have been reported, most are temporary and can be resolved with little to no medical intervention. The most common sideeffects include hypersensitivity, numbness, burning and tingling at the injection site. Current studies are demonstrating up to 12 months of pain relief* and functional

improvement specifically for knee pain and osteoarthritis. The patient should begin to feel pain relief within one to two weeks of the procedure. There are so many options available to anyone wanting to fill wrinkles or tighten sagging skin that there’s no reason we should have to look in the mirror and not love what we see! Fillers can combat fine lines, wrinkles and some degree of sagging by replenishing the collagen and hyaluronic acid that diminishes in our body as we age. Cosmetic injectables and fillers are a great way to achieve immediate results with no down time and although unlikely, if you’re unhappy with the results, they can be dissolved. So if you’re unsure about looking too ‘done’, it’s best to start conservatively, safe in the knowledge that you can build from there with more volume, or even reverse the whole process! It is essentially a triangular growth of fleshy thickened tissue surrounded by blood vessels, beginning on the conjunctiva (the white of the eye) and gradually extending towards and across the cornea (the window

to our eye). The growth can happen in one or both eyes. It is certainly not uncommon here in sunny Queensland as UV light is one of the strongest risk factors! You might see it commonly among surfers, tradies, farmers and even athletes who spend a lot of time in the sun. On occasion, they do become red and irritable due to disruption of the tear film of the eye. It is, however, quite unsightly and tends to grow steadily over time. If left untreated, scarring can set in and a resultant reduction in vision due to a change to the corneal surface, a condition known as astigmatism. Occasionally it may also be the beginning of a surface cancer (OSSN) although this is rare and tends to display other features including a gelatinous or plaque-like appearance. Size does matter here, so if it is large or growing rapidly, surgery is recommended. Earlier surgery does result in better visual outcomes and minimises scarring of the cornea. This is done by removing the pterygium under an operating microscope and transplanting a conjunctival graft, harvested from your own eye. Most of these grafts are secured with sutures, although some surgeons have used tissue glue with success. Discomfort following surgery tends to settle after the first week and it is overall a successful procedure. However, ongoing exposure to the sun may trigger a recurrence in later years despite surgery. It is advisable to use sunglasses with SPF50 protection following the procedure and reduce direct UV exposure where possible. DEMAND OUTWEIGHS SUPPLY A report by a Sunshine Coast property expert identifies a disconnect between what we have and what we need. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

n his latest report Sunshine Coast: The Future 2022, Direct Collective managing director Mal Cayley refers to the Coast’s ratio of housing supply and demand and dedicates a chapter to ‘The Undersupply Issue’ while labelling the ‘Missing Middle’ as a major contributor to the region’s housing crisis. The ‘Missing Middle’ he describes consists of smaller, more affordable accommodation such as duplexes, triplexes, townhouses and terrace houses, located close to amenities and transport. The Queensland Government identifies the ‘Missing Middle’ as those dwellings between high-rise, highdensity living and free-standing, suburban family homes. This is a far cry from the early days of the Sunshine Coast’s housing development. Back in the day, it was all about detached housing and big yards, holiday flats and low-rise motels. But times have changed, the population has surged and become more diverse and yet, the report contends, we have not adapted housing styles to suit the new

demographic, finally resulting in an unprecedented housing crisis. Mr Cayley says the ‘Missing Middle’ is actually holding the community to ransom. “So many have just nowhere they can go,” he says. The report says the undersupply of housing has been growing over a period of 10 years, however, it has been “intensified by insufficient planning over the long term and exacerbated by macro prudential regulation”. Mr Cayley says the housing crisis is multi-faceted, which includes a demographic change, evidenced by a reduction of the region’s workforce by 3000 people. Last month, Direct Collective sponsored a visit by leading demographer Bernard Salt who revealed Sunshine Coast and Noosa labour force data showing that despite a population surge, there was a workforce reduction. He warns the lack of affordable housing as a contributing factor towards young people leaving the area, thus lowering the workforce numbers. However, Mr Cayley says the first
