Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk hopes the long-awaited return will boost the state’s tourism economy. “Before the pandemic, the cruise industry injected millions of dollars into local businesses right throughout Queensland,” she says. “With a brand-new cruise terminal in Brisbane, more ports than any other state and the best climate, there’s no reason Queensland can’t become the cruise capital of Australia in the near future.” The Queensland Government has also completed a $127 million project to widen

fter two years, Australia’s ban on cruising was lifted on April 17, with cruise companies and travellers welcoming the news. Sunshine Coast travel agencies and international cruise companies have already reported strong bookings for 2022, with many voyages already booked out. Aiming to keep the industry smooth sailing, cruise companies have enforced new safety measures including testing and vaccination requirements. Guests can expect once-popular buffet meals to be replaced with table service and masks a must on your ‘what to bring list’. Destinations will also look different, with most companies to begin domestic cruising. Before the pandemic, more than a million Aussies took to the seas each year for a cruising holiday, injecting more than $5 billion into the Australian economy. The industry supported around 18,000 jobs. Our region also benefited from cruise-related tourist spending prior to 2020, with ships docking off Mooloolaba for day-trippers to explore the Sunshine Coast. To mark the new dawn of cruising, the

first international arrival in two years, P&O’s Pacific Explorer, sailed empty into Sydney on April 18 as it prepares for its return to passenger services to Brisbane on May 31. Sunshine Coast-based Julie Rogers is the director of sales in the Asia Pacific for boutique cruise company Ponant. She says there is pent-up demand for cruising as Australia has been one of the last counties to revoke the ban. Ponant’s 184-passenger vessel, Le Lapérouse, will begin operations of its iconic Kimberly experience between Darwin and Broome on April 28. “Our entire season for 2022 is sold out,” she says. “We actually brought another ship in and have added two more departure dates for May and June to meet demand. We are already taking bookings for 2023.” Ms Rogers says the Sunshine Coast is Australia’s cruising capital. “The Sunshine Coast has a very diverse population,” she says. “There are lot of families that enjoy cruising on the larger ships that have entertainment and kids’ clubs and then we have our retired population who enjoy small ships cruising.”

An innovative approach to hip and knee replacement

Peak body Cruise Lines International Association Australia says the lifting of the ban will be marked by “a carefully managed resumption of operations”. “While no setting is immune from COVID-19, the cruise industry’s new protocols provide among the highest possible levels of prevention, detection and mitigation,” Cruise Lines’ Australasian managing director Joel Katz says. Each company will operate slightly differently but Ms Rogers says guests can expect mask wearing in public spaces, social distancing and table service. She says these strict COVID protocols have already been in place overseas. “Ships have returned to sailing already around the world,” she says. “Australia is one of the last countries to return to sailing, so these COVID protocols have been tested and they have been successful.” She says Ponant had established laboratories on each of its 13 ships to analyse mandatory PCR and rapid testing for passengers. Queensland has been busy preparing for the return to cruising, with the state government injecting millions into

P&O offers cruises from Brisbane to the Whitsundays. But if they only have a few days, guests can hop aboard one of the short break cruises from Brisbane. P&O also offer cruises to the Pacific from Brisbane, on the Pacific Island Hopper. P&O has been cruising the South Pacific for more than 86 years and has built strong relationships with Pacific Island partners. Royal Caribbean has this week launched its campaign, The Wait is Over, offering an array of deals for voyages out of Sydney and Brisbane later in the year. Locals can make the most of these current deals at Travellers Choice agencies in Caloundra, Maroochydore, Nambour, Buddina and Tewantin.

Pineapple works as a natural meat tenderiser. The fruit is packed with the enzyme bromelain, which breaks down protein chains, making it an ideal marinade for meats when you don’t have a lot of time. rom stunning coastal walks and lush hinterland trails, to challenging summit hikes for adrenaline junkies, the Sunshine Coast is bursting with opportunity to put on your walking boots and explore. The region has 39,835 hectares of national parks, state forests and reserves, so there is bound to be a walk for everyone – no matter your age or fitness level. With stunning waterfalls, secret swimming holes and jaw-dropping views, plus family and dog-friendly trails, there is so much to discover. With the weather at this time of year ideal for being outdoors, we have complied a helpful guide to inspire you to create your own perfect day out.

Did you know the mountains are remnants of volcanic activity that occurred around 27 million years ago? Why not stroll the 4.1-kilometre base walk around Mount Tibrogargan, or the 5.7-kilometre Trachyte circuit. Those seeking an adrenaline rush, and epic view, can tackle one of four summit walks. You’ll need a good level of fitness and be comfortable rock scrambling. The popular Mount Ngungun summit walking track is a 2.8-kilometre trail and will take you around 40 minutes to reach the top. For more experienced walkers, the Yul-yanman track – meaning ‘walk slowly’ in the Kabi Kabi language – is a tricky four-hour trek full of breathtaking views.

GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS

DO GO CHASING WATERFALLS

If you’re fit and looking for a challenge, head to one of the 11 Glass House Mountains peaks.

The region’s national parks are home to incredible waterfalls and many of these hidden gems are a

well-earned reward for those up for the trek. Kondalilla National Park has several treks winding through the rainforest. Take the 4.7-kilometre Kondalilla Falls Circuit, featuring 100 steps, to the base of the falls, or the shorter 1.7- kilometre Picnic Creek Circuit to the natural rock pools at the top of the waterfall. If you prefer a longer walk, take on the 20-kilometre Baroon Pocket to Kondalilla Falls trek, which takes about five hours. For an enchanted walk over suspension bridges, enjoy the 6.2-kilometre return walk from Flaxton Mill Road carpark to Baxter Falls. In Conondale National Park you’ll find the three-kilometre return Booloumba Falls walk. This will take about two hours and the swimming hole at the end is perfect in those warmer months. the Fig Tree Walk in the Imbil State Forest near Kenilworth. It’s a familyfriendly walk that takes around 20 minutes. There are also some great trails in the Tewantin, Eumundi and Parklands conservation parks.

COASTAL CRUISE Those looking for a relaxing but spectacular walk can enjoy a range of costal trails and pathways. Take on part of The Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway, which is 73 kilometres long and stretches from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north. The generally busy Noosa National Park up to Hell’s Gates is also a great for families, hugging the headland between Noosa and Sunshine Beach.

MOUNTAIN TIME The popular Mount Coolum is a great place to start for first-time mountain climbers. The 1.6-kilometre climb takes you 208 metres above sea level and will take around 90 minutes return. Another beautiful climb is Mount Cooroora in Tuchekoi National Park. Nestled in the township of Pomona, this 1.8-kilometre climb is great fun for those with a good level of fitness and willing to rock scramble.

Kondalilla National Park

SUNSHINE COAST HINTERLAND GREAT WALK If you really want to tick off a major bucket list item, try the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk. The 58.8-kilometre walk is not for the faint-hearted and will take four days to complete as you travel through the Maleny and Mapleton Plateau, the Blackall Range, Bunya Pines and Kondalilla and Mapleton national parks.

For the adventurous types looking for somewhere even most locals don’t know about, check out the Dularcha Forest Tunnel walk between Landsborough and Mooloolah. Completed in 1891, the tunnel is one of two tunnels built on the original railway line between Brisbane and Gympie. Take either a 500-metre or two-kilometre walk from Landsborough or a 900-metre walk from Mooloolah. Deep within Conondale National Park, discover artwork by famous British artist Andy Goldsworthy on the Strangler Cairn walk. You’ll need a four-wheeldrive to reach the track’s starting point, however, you can add an extra three kilometres to your walk if you only have a two-wheel-drive. For dog lovers, take

Consider walking with a friend or group, especially if you are attempting a more challenging climb, and avoid walking at dawn and dusk or soon after rain. Always stay on designated tracks and know your fitness level and experience. Make sure to do your research before you set off to ensure it is the right walk for you. A chorus of delighted aged-care residents now regularly looks forward to hearing the Maroochy River Country Music Club’s tunes thanks to the latest round of Community Grants Program. The club has received $1188 to purchase wireless microphones that will allow all club members to join in the entertainment safely, without concern of tripping over cables. It comes as applications for Sunshine Coast Council’s latest round of minor grants are now open. Applications can be submitted in community development, community facilities, creative development, cultural heritage, economic development, sport and recreation categories. PREPARING FOR BUSHFIRE SEASON Planned burns are now underway across the Sunshine Coast region in preparation for the upcoming bushfire season. Alexandra Headland, Peregian Springs, Mountain Creek, Tanawha, Diamond Valley, Buderim, Caloundra, Landsborough, Little Mountain and Caloundra West will undergo planned burns before September, if conditions are suitable. As part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Bushfire Management Plan, the burns will reduce forest fuel in these locations and help with vital habitat regeneration. “Low intensity, patch mosaic burning is used to reduce the impact on native animals and achieve these desired ecological outcomes,” Sunshine Coast Council fire management officer Guy Morgan says. “This allows animals to escape through the unburnt edges and natural features such as gullies and generally leaves 25 to 60 per cent of an area unburnt, providing animals with areas for refuge.” The council will work alongside First Nations peoples in relation to traditional bushfire management.

OLYMPICS TO LEAVE A LEGACY Key community members have been named in a group that will help the Sunshine Coast make the most of the 2032 Games. The Sunshine Coast Legacy Plan Community Reference Group (CRG) will be chaired by two-time Paralympian and University of the Sunshine Coast Public Health lecturer, Dr Bridie Kean (pictured). The group has been established to provide advice, from the perspective of the community, about local legacy outcomes and opportunities that should be pursued as part of the Games. “Collectively, this group will provide strong representation in many areas including Olympics and Paralympics, tourism, the community, disability, youth and education,” Dr Kean says. “I look forward to the first meeting getting underway.”

$27.9 MILLION School students across the Sunshine Coast are keeping cool thanks to a $27.9-million air-conditioning initiative. Every classroom, library and staff room in every Sunshine Coast state school is now air conditioned as part of the state-wide, $477 million Cooler Cleaner Schools Program. More than 1170 school spaces in 49 Coast schools have been included in the roll out. Education Minister Grace Grace says the project was due for completion in June this year, but has fast tracked so that state school students, teachers and staff on the Sunshine Coast have now been enjoying air conditioning as of the beginning of term two.

STEPH WOOD TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA Sunshine Coast Lightning foundation player Steph Wood is in line to play at her second Commonwealth Games after earning selection in the Diamonds squad for this year’s event in Birmingham. Wood and her Lightning circle partner Cara Koenen have been announced in an 18-strong squad by Australia’s National Coach Stacey Marinkovich. Ms Wood, 30, was a member of the team that won silver at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, coming on as a second-half substitute to score 12 goals at 86 per cent accuracy in the gold medal match. Townsville-born Koenen, 26, is in the mix to make her Games debut. “From the Lightning’s point of view, every time Cara and Steph have stepped out in green and gold for the Diamonds in the past 12 months, we have been extremely proud,” Lightning coach Kylee Byrne says.

CAMERA READY Queensland police are inviting the community to take part in its crime-prevention alliance.

community CCTV initiative is launching on the Sunshine Coast to help residents and local business owners assist police prevent and solve crime. The Community Camera Alliance (CCA) is a state-wide Queensland Police Service-led community safety initiative where businesses and residents with closed-circuit television (CCTV) can register their systems with police. The alliance has been successfully rolled out across 16 areas in Queensland with the Sunshine Coast being the newest region to be invited to register its CCTV systems. Commissioner Katarina Carroll says the CCA is a valuable addition to the community and encourages residents to register their systems online. “All residents and businesses who have a CCTV system installed can contribute to this valuable prevention and reporting network, which has the ability to assist local police in investigating, preventing and responding to local issues,” Commissioner Carroll says. “This initiative is a great example of how the community can partner with police in the pursuit of solving crime and contributing directly to making the Sunshine Coast safer. “Interested locals can register their system as part of the alliance and if a CCTV system can be utilised in an investigation, contact will be made with them by police. “All information will be stored safely and securely, and members can remove themselves from the CCA at any time.”

State member for Caloundra Jason Hunt says every new initiative that supports community safety is to be welcomed. “I will always advocate strongly for the people of Caloundra when it comes to community safety, as there is nothing more important in my view,” he says. “Our police are a part of the community and this new partnership opportunity further cements the bond between police and the people they serve.” Sunshine Coast residents who wish to join the CCA can register online by searching ‘Community Camera Alliance’ at police.qld.gov.au.

USC STUDENT’S CAREER CHANGE A WINNER A Sunshine-Coast based psychologist who is one of the creative minds behind a quirky musical has been presented with a University Medal after changing her career. Jen Francis recently received the University of the Sunshine Coast’s highest academic honour for a graduating student when she graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Industries – Theatre and Performance. A clinical children’s psychologist for more than 25 years, Ms Francis says the degree is a final step in her transition to a career as a writer. “Script writing is a love of mine and I’ve been involved in theatre for many years,” she says. “I’ve also worked in film and editing in the past, producing corporate, educational and training videos. I am currently collaborating on a play to be performed at the Anywhere Festival in Brisbane and for several years I’ve been collaborating on an original script, MILF The Musical, which, with industry support, we are staging in Las Vegas in September.” This follows an off-Broadway industry reading of the play staged at the Jerry Orbach Theater in New York in 2019. MILF The Musical is being promoted as a musical that “will inspire any female over 30 who’s ever felt the pressure of juggling, work, family and fabulousness”.

ELECTRIC BUSES DRIVING INTO REGION’S GREENER FUTURE Five electric public buses will soon hit the streets of the Sunshine Coast, creating greener and cleaner travel and driving the region’s low-emissions future. The new convoy builds on the state government’s recently released Zero Emissions Vehicle Strategy, which promises every new bus in southeast Queensland will be electric from 2025. Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says the buses will play a vital role in the local community. “Having emissions-free buses here on the Coast is fantastic not only for our

local environment, but for all of Queensland,” he says. “Transport is the second biggest emitter in Queensland but is rapidly evolving to embrace zero-emissions technology. “Our research shows each electric bus could save as much as 1000 tonnes of greenhouse gases over its life span and deliver many community benefits with less noise and harmful air pollution.” Kinetic-owned Sunbus will introduce the new buses on the Sunshine Coast from early May.

hen Janessa Rutter began her gluten- and refined sugar-free granola company in 2016, the idea it may one day be sold in supermarkets was still just a dream. At the time she was working as a recipe developer on Instagram for well-known yoghurt companies and in the process created a granola recipe all her family and friends fell in love with. Now with Bask & Co Granola Clusters, she focuses on 100 per cent natural ingredients sourced from local businesses. It is thanks to a Sunshine Coast food and beverage trade event, Meet the Makers, that her products are now stocked in IGA and Drakes Supermarkets. The Food & Agribusiness Network’s

(FAN) event is a key opportunity for chefs, restaurateurs, cafes, food stores, retailers, accommodation and attraction providers to foster relationships with producers and learn about products. Now in its fourth year and happening on May 3, it will showcase fresh produce, food and beverage products from more than 100 exhibitors from the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Gympie and Moreton Bay regions and beyond. Attending in 2021, Ms Rutter says Meet the Makers has been crucial for the growth of her business, especially with the serious buyers it attracts. “Once the buyers started arriving, it was clear that they were there to buy,” Ms Rutter says. “They genuinely wanted to learn about you, your business and your

products. CULT CLASSIC IS COMING Local theatre lovers are in for a treat with a Little Shop of Horrors production showing as part of Anywhere Festival.

unshine Coast residents can experience a smash Broadway musical in an unconventional but highly popular theatre festival. Award-winning Sunshine Coast producers Marina de Jager and Riley

Cope will bring the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors to life as part of the Anywhere Festival. Set in 1960s New York, the quirky tale is a feast for the eyes with dazzling costumes, props and, perhaps most famously, a growing

puppet plant that is known as Audrey II. “We’re excited to bring this incredible show to life and showcase the exceptional talent that the Sunshine Coast has to offer,” Ms de Jager says. “We’ve got dancers, singers, actors, not to mention the five puppets that play Audrey II – the flesh-eating plant – so there’s a lot happening on stage.” Anywhere Festival takes places across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Brisbane and Moreton Bay and brings shows to anywhere but a traditional theatre space. “From pools to mazes, bookshops and even the bathrooms at a pub, the festival has seen truly unique settings for its shows and Little Shop of Horrors is no exception,” Mr Cope says. “It’s great to give this classic musical a fresh spin as part of the Anywhere Festival.” The show is happening at Montessori International College from April 29 to May 1. Other shows to feature on the Sunshine Coast include Caprichos by DIVE Theatre Collective and As You Like It by Little Seed Theatre Company. ICONIC NORFOLK PINES AT MOFFS TO BE REMOVED Emergency repair works are now underway to temporarily fix the Moffat Beach seawall and ensure it is safe for the community. With safety in mind, it also means two 90-year-old Norfolk pines will be removed to allow for the vital wall repair. The area has been cordoned off since February’s severe weather event, and independent geotechnical and coastal engineers have since assessed the damage to provide repair solutions. The investigation found approximately 80 metres of the seawall have been damaged, which includes ‘slumping’ of a 30-metre section of the wall and significant cracking in other areas. The beach access ramp and nearby beach stairs are also within the failure area of the wall and are unsafe for public access. Stage one of works will focus on temporarily repairing the slumping section and allow time to develop a carefully designed, long-term repair solution, including repairs to park infrastructure and beach accesses. NO STOPPING ‘WINGLESS WARRIOR’ A woman with no arms who has developed her own unique style of swimming will tackle her longest challenge yet when she takes part in a life-changing charity event. Kerry-Lee Gockel, 38, dubbed ‘The Wingless Warrior’, will be among the participants at the annual Island Charity Swim — a 10-kilometre ocean swim around Old Woman Island. The event raises money for students who attend Sunshine Coast Special Schools but has struggled to gain support in recent years due to COVID.

Born without arms, Ms Gockel says the charity swim on May 7 is a personal challenge, a chance to raise money for a good cause and an opportunity to inspire the youngsters. Swimming via a freestyle kick, with flippers, and a roll to breathe, Ms Gockel has never stopped living life to the fullest. HATCHLING TURTLES STRANDED Turtle hatchlings are at peak emergence across southern Queensland. Many post-hatchling turtles will be travelling past the Sunshine Coast on the Eastern Australian Current and are likely to ingest the small polystyrene fragments that have broken up in the ocean after the recent flooding events. It may be one of the country’s newest sports, but pickleball has a growing and enthusiastic following, especially on the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

t is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and now pickleball is gaining a substantial following across the Sunshine Coast. Ahead of its exhibition at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the relatively new sport will come to Mooloolaba in May as part of the Queensland Pickleball Tour. Pickleball is a combination of tennis and table tennis and is played on a badminton-sized court. Players use a paddle to hit a plastic ‘wiffle’ ball over a net slightly lower than a tennis net, in a singles or doubles format. Pickleball Queensland secretary Bruce Winther says the sport began in the US 40 years ago and after just five years in Australia it is seeing a strong uptake.

Across Australia there are 2500 registered pickleball players, with 1150 on the Coast alone. “The Pickleball Association Australia now has around 2500 registered members, but it is thought around 8000 casual players enjoy the sport across Australia,” Mr Winther says. “In Queensland, there are 19 affiliate clubs with around 50 venues. On the Sunshine Coast, there are three clubs running around 10 venues. “They are Sunshine Coast Pickleball Club, KT Pickleball Academy at Mooloolaba and Noosa Pickleball Club.” Mr Winther says tournaments and social games make up a calendar of annual events, with 18 scheduled tournaments in Queensland this year.

“These cater for not only the best players but players at all different age and skill levels. “The New South Wales state titles were held in Sydney [from April 9 to 11] with Queensland players bringing home 45 medals. “Sunshine Coast players competed extremely well with Ludovica Sciaky, Glenice Ault, Bruce Winther, Sally Buckley and Mark Latham-Calcott all winning medals.” As part of the Queensland Pickleball Tour, KT Pickleball Academy at Mooloolaba Tennis Club is running a tournament for open and over 50s players on May 7 and 8. On May 14 and 15, Noosa Pickleball Club will run its third annual classic event for intermediate players. The community is invited to head along to watch and learn more about the sport. About pickleball Pickleball is a low-impact sport that is easy to learn and play at almost any age. As the world’s fastest growing sport, it has had a gradual introduction into Australia since 2015 with a small group of enthusiasts starting the first incorporated association in 2017. The Pickleball Australia Association was established in 2020. Associations and playing groups in every state and territory in Australia are now well connected with the rapidly growing pickleball community worldwide.

CASH PAID FOR GOLD

Applications are open for Sunshine Coast charities to apply for the 2022 Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund. The Buderim Foundation became the trustee for the Thompson Charitable Trust in 2021 and this will be the second year it has offered grants from the fund. Foundation grants committee chair Rebecca Ramsay says organisations that provide services to help residents achieve a modest standard of living are invited to assess grant eligibility. “In 2021, four organisations providing support to people experiencing homelessness and financial distress due to domestic violence and other circumstance on the Sunshine Coast were awarded grants totalling $110,000 from the Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund,” Mrs Ramsay says. The fund was established thanks to a multimillion-dollar donation from Sunshine Coast philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson. NEW HEADSPACE FACILITY TO OPEN IN CALOUNDRA

To say Caitlin ‘Kate’ Jones is blazing a trail in a male-dominated industry is an understatement. The 25-year-old Coolum woman is an apprentice carpenter, after deciding to pursue a career in construction over a biomedical university degree. It was years of household repairs, deck building and DIY projects with her father that sparked a genuine love of construction. “It’s a blokey world for sure, but it is not terrible or terrifying to work in construction,” she says. There are fewer than 90 female apprentice carpenters in Queensland’s construction workforce of 240,000, and the Sunshine Coast has the lowest percentage of women in construction

Caloundra will soon be home to a new Headspace facility to provide vital mental health support and early intervention to young people in the region. Headspace offers free or low-cost services to youth struggling with mental, physical and sexual health, work, study, alcohol or drugs. It is estimated one in four people aged 16 to 24 experience some form of mental illness every year and that 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before the age of 25. With a centre currently in Maroochydore, chief executive officer of the Central Queensland,

Jane Stephens has seen the light and now realises why sleep is so important to our mental and physical wellbeing.

caused by the historic failure of science to explain simply why we need it. But Professor Walker found every major organ and process in the brain is optimally enhanced by sleep. This means we are impaired when we do not get enough. And so many do not get enough. A federal parliament inquiry into sleep health in Australia resulted in a report in 2019 – charmingly called Bedtime Reading – that found four in 10 Australians are regularly not having enough quality sleep. For some people this is due to a clinical sleep disorder, but for many it is because of work patterns and lifestyle pressures. The use of digital devices and electronic media late in the evening has been repeatedly linked to disrupted sleep and the concern about the health of our young is now a ringing alarm bell. Regular inadequate sleep has significant health impacts and has been associated with an increased risk of disease and increases in depression and dementia. That’ll do me – and Shakespeare, apparently, who wrote in Macbeth: “Innocent sleep. Sleep that soothes away all our worries … Sleep, the main course in life’s feast, and the most nourishing.”

our hours, maybe five. I can operate on that. Sleep is for the weak – for many years this was my refrain. It started with having three babies close together and taking on night shifts in a newsroom to maximise my time with them in their pre-school years. I would get home three hours before they rose, full of beans, to greet the dawn. The years ticked on and sleep simply was not a priority as I took on extra paid work, voluntary positions and threw myself into physical exercise, all of which were completed after the regular day was done or before the next one started. Every now and then, I fell over, of course. I would get very sick or I would fall into a sleep so thick and deep it was as if I was, in fact, dead. But sleep and I did not get along. Then I saw the light. My son gave me a book called Why We Sleep, and it was as if a switch flicked. I know now sleep is as essential to health as air and food. Sleep has remained one of the last great biological mysteries and Why We Sleep author Professor Matthew Walker contends that society’s apathy towards it has been

was at the lights on my bike the other arvo and a bus went around the corner with a massive photo of celebrity lawyer Travis Schultz, and it weirded me out because it was as if his eyes were following me as it turned the corner. There used to be one of Steve Dickson that did the same thing, which used to me unnerve me, particularly if I had just written something unkind about him. A bit like Chucky the weird doll out of Child’s Play. Scary. Now I mention the above as an entree into what I am really on about – Nicklin Way and the hundreds of smiling Chuckys all wanting our vote at the next election. Obviously we must be regarded as having a gold fish memory or why else would we need smiling candidates every 100 metres or so? How Main Roads don’t fine them for the intent to distract motorists is completely beyond me. I am already sick of this election but I do wonder, is it too late to nominate or register a party? Mine would be the Donkey Party and who better qualified to run the party than yours truly. I want to offer the voter another option, one away from photo

opportunities or press conferences with nodding dogs behind them hanging on every promise and every criticism of their opponent. The Donkey Party would have none of that and would not waste money on Photoshopped pictures of candidates, just a black and white photo of a donkey or me at the entrance to polling, that’s it. No one harassing you at polling booths, although a petting farm at each booth with a donkey or two might be a winner. But the budget wouldn’t be there for that as I would only allow for some black and white posters and a couple of cartons of beer for the after-party. That would keep costs down to about $200. No T-shirts, no flyers, just the facts. Well, except for the beers. The facts are just like Nicklin Way riddled with wannabe politicians, we are being treated like idiots and we must be because we let them get away with it every election. But I am either getting smarter as I get older, unlikely I would think, but more like they are getting worse at hiding how false this all is. ‘Vote 1 The Donkey Party’ would probably pick up more votes than expected, which is all pretty sad.

WEE ARE NOT AMUSED Potential COVID, dog tablets and a ruined handbag – Sami Muirhead is not having a good week. Just ask the medical receptionist.

t has been a big week of sickness in our home that resulted in me getting urine in my handbag and swallowing a dog worming tablet. I am not sure I should be confessing all of this but here goes. I had the classic signs of COVID but also sore kidneys and recent problems with a blood infection so off I toddled to the doctor feeling miserable. He was most unimpressed I had come to the medical centre at all – he did not want to catch COVID as he was going overseas later that week. This baffled me but I pushed forward and went to the toilet to do a urine sample. Sorry for over-sharing. Anyway, I was so unprepared for this and the toilet had a dodgy lock so I was feeling very nervous about the whole gross situation when my hand touched the inner bowl of the toilet. Gag. Vomit. Game over. I started doing wild hand gesticulations and dry retching. I raced to the vanity where the soap pumper was empty. Convinced I had contracted tetanus, typhoid and the plague from touching a toilet bowl at a medical centre I threw the specimen jar in the plastic bag and popped it in my prized possession, my white Gucci handbag, to hide it from patients at reception.

Legacy considerations include improvement to beach and back-of-beach infrastructure for locals and visitors. On a larger scale, the Sunshine Coast will play an integral role in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be home to four key venues and several sporting events. Sunshine Coast Council mayor Mark Jamieson says increasing the tech capability of our region will ensure the council’s high-value industries can be innovative and participate globally at high speed. “We already have the essential infrastructure in place – the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network and new Maroochydore City Centre’s ongoing development including NEXTDC’s new regional Edge Data Centre,” Mayor Jamieson says. “Together, they will support a diverse, adaptable, robust and resilient economy. “The pandemic accelerated the uptake of technology and the digitalisation of business and a number of local businesses, Raider Targetry, ENTAG, GoLogic and Haven VR, took advantage of this. “Coupled with access to new tech infrastructure, they have confidence to further grow their business on the Sunshine Coast and attract talent from both within and outside the region.” Chair of the Sunshine Coast Tech Industry Alliance

new bill introduced into federal parliament will see compulsory superannuation payments extended to more workers from July 2022. Currently the Australian superannuation system requires an employer to make regular contributions, 10 per cent of an employee’s wage, into an employee’s chosen superannuation account. At present, an employee is entitled to super guarantee contributions from an employer if they are 18 years old or over and are paid $450 or more (before tax) in a month from a single employer. However, as a result of legislative changes introduced by the Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing superannuation outcomes for Australians and helping Australian businesses invest) Bill 2021, from July 1, 2022, the $450 monthly earnings threshold will be removed, and the Superannuation Guarantee will also rise to 10.5 per cent. This means that from July 1 this year, employers will be required to make 10.5 per cent superannuation contributions for their workers earning less than $450 in pre-tax income per month. However, if an

Can I draft my Will to ensure my ex has no contact with my children? Myth – “I can make sure my ex has no contact with my children through a clause in my Will, right?” Wrong! Appointing a Guardian of your infant child doesn’t necessarily mean your child will live with that person. The Guardian you nominate in your Will will have the care of your child only if the other parent has passed away. If there is a dispute as to guardianship, it may be necessary for Family Court Orders to be obtained. A Guardian will have the ability to make various decisions about a child’s day-to-day care and where the child lives and goes to school. Choosing the ‘right’ Guardian is a decision requiring careful consideration of many matters, including whether the Guardian is to be in charge of the ‘purse strings’. A Will usually contains a clause allowing an Executor (and not the Guardian) to advance money for the child’s maintenance and benefit. You should obtain legal advice to properly prepare your estate plan to address guardianship issues.

Is Divorce different to matrimonial property division?

Now is the time to start planning for the year ended June 30, 2022:

Yes, they are different, and this is important because different time limits apply. Separate Court applications need to be filed for Divorce and property adjustment. Before spouses can apply for Divorce, they must have been separated for 12 months. Separated spouses do not have to wait 12 months to apply for Court orders which have the effect of finally resolving the division of assets such as properties, savings, shares and superannuation in a binding manner. Once negotiated, Court orders by consent can be applied for immediately. The risks of waiting for an extended period before addressing property division after separation can include: • Increased difficulty in identifying the assets and liabilities of the marriage. • Increased risk of assets being removed, spent or adjusted so it is more complex and expensive to adjust. • Impact upon assets, in particular businesses. • Missed investment opportunities as immediately post-separation steps should be taken to protect all joint assets such that a joint agreement is required to deal with those assets. • Delays in moving forward financially.

Four areas to keep an eye on for the 2022 year as discussed by the Tax office are: Work-related expenses – especially home office claims This category is predicted to skyrocket for claims made by individual taxpayers in their 2022 income tax returns. Rental income and deductions The ATO wants to make sure taxpayers have the correct records for any rental property expenses after it noticed an increase across the board in rental property expense claims. Cryptocurreny In May 2021 the ATO released a media statement to say it will be reviewing this area closely. The ATO has been asking individuals and businesses to look back at their previously lodged returns. This will continue to be in the spotlight. Employer obligations This is predicted to be the biggest claim category over the next 12 months. The ATO is not going to let this go away and has the means to know who it will be targeting.

IMMERSIVE LEARNING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

awana Waters State College (KWSC) forms part of the dynamic and innovative health and business precinct including the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the private hospital. Close partnerships with this precinct and the University of the Sunshine Coast mean that health career pathways are abundant at KWSC. The health care and social assistance sector continues to be the largest employing industry in Australia. With more than 1.8 million people already employed in this sector and with a projected growth of a further 14 per cent over the next five years, KWSC has a moral obligation to continue to find opportunities to deliver innovative and quality programs to support this growth sector.

In 2017, the establishment of the KWSC Health Education Unit, a simulation ward with state-of-the-art technology and a registered nurse/teacher employed, provided students with the opportunity to engage in ground-breaking immersive health qualifications. A collaborative agreement was established with 12 other public, private and independent schools in the North Coast and Brisbane region, totally 107 students. In 2020 the Health Education Hub had a 100 per cent expansion in facilities, an increase of a further 105 student enrolments with three additional schools involved and an increase in staffing in the areas of nursing, paramedics, midwifery and pharmacy. KWSC brokered a partnership with CheckUP, a not-for-profit organisation partnering with health

providers to reduce health inequities in rural and remote communities, ensuring students have greater employment options. Last year the Health Education Hub allowed students to complete triple certificate qualifications to specialise in the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (in patient care), allowing them the opportunity to complete an Assisting in Nursing (AIN) specialisation. It also pioneered the Remote Health Education Program, whereby 50 students in Rockhampton and Mackay engaged in online learning, using Health Education Unit staff for regular face-to-face delivery and receiving qualifications. Additionally, the unit provided a differentiated suite of modules catering for the growing disability sector, specified by community organisations such as House With No Steps and the NDIS. These partnerships were harnessed through the support of the unit’s external RTO – Connect N Grow. This program knows no boundaries and this mindset is echoed throughout this robust RTO. To support students interested in high-end medical careers KWSC introduced the Medical Immersion Program in 2020 for students in Years 10 and 11. In this three-day camp students are immersed in these professions, both clinically and theoretically, understanding career pathways and application processes and meeting like-minded students. “Our journey does not end here, as we continue to find innovative ways to support students interested in a career in the rapidly growing health sector,” says acting executive principal Elly Gerbo.

NEW HOLISTIC WELLBEING PROGRAM EMPOWERS STUDENTS AT FLINDERS TO LIVE AND LEARN IN HEALTHY WAYS Weaving wellness into the daily school curriculum and teaching real-world skills such as how to manage your money, prepare for a job interview, help others and have respectful relationships are just some of the aspects of an exciting new holistic wellbeing program at Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim. Now in its second year, the Flinders WELL4Life & Learning program is informed by current research and aims to equip students with the knowledge, life skills and character traits to live and learn in positive, healthy and meaningful ways. Principal Stuart Meade says the college actively embraces the critical role it plays in providing a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment that nurtures the wellbeing of its students from Prep to Year 12. The Flinders WELL4Life & Learning program is guided by the college’s head of pastoral programs, Dr Louise McCuaig, who has worked and researched for more than 30 years with a focus on building young people’s health and wellbeing through quality education programs and policies. Dr McCuaig says, “The Flinders WELL4Life & Learning program has self-agency as its driving force and aims to teach each of our students that they are capable of responding positively to a changing and complex world, which is vital to a sense of wellbeing. “It’s rewarding to see our Flinders secondary students from Years 7 to 12

ith interest rates on the rise, borrowers consider looking at offset or re-draw accounts as a better way to use residual income. Coast-based mortgage broker Brenden Brial of SMS Finance explained that both types of mortgage-associated accounts as a rule apply to variable interest rate loans. “The lenders we use will offset or redraw, or some of them will have both.” To explain how an offset account works; a borrower who has a $100,000 variable interest rate loan and an offset account set up against that loan which has $20,000 in it, the lender will look at both accounts and calculate the daily interest on $80,000. The interest is then charged to the loan each month. There is no interest earned on an offset account. Rather, the borrower earns a saving on the interest charged to the home loan. “If you make weekly repayments that’s better than fortnightly and fortnightly is better than monthly,” Mr Brial says. “Anything you can do to reduce your daily interest is better in the long run,” he adds.

In the case of a $1000,000 loan’s redraw account which holds $20,000, the funds can be paid into the mortgage account to reduce the loan, but the borrower can then redraw the funds and use them whenever required. “You still have access to that $20,000 but while it is sitting off the loan itself, it is saving you interest each day,” Mr Brial says.
