Bracing for an unpredictable

flu season After two winters of virtually no inﬂuenza in the community, experts are concerned that low ﬂu immunity in a world living with COVID will make for an uncertain season. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

octors say Coast residents could be in for a health shock this winter as the flu makes a dreaded return after being virtually non-existent for two years. Laboratory statistics reveal there have been zero confirmed cases of influenza on the Sunshine Coast to March 20 this year. Last year, there were just 23 cases in the entire year compared with some 5463 cases in the pre-pandemic period of 2019. This almost complete absence of the virus the past two years means many residents – in particular babies, toddlers and the elderly – may have significantly reduced immunity. And with the coronavirus still doing the rounds, people could pick up both illnesses – dubbed ‘flurona’ – leading to an unpredictable flu season. An expert in outbreaks response, Chris Maher, told Sunshine Coast News it is difficult to anticipate the impact of a dual infection, but it is likely that it will “not be good”. “With control measures for COVID being reduced, and higher levels of movement and human contact, the

possibility is there that influenza virus could move in the community much more easily than has been possible in the past two years,” he says. “Not many people have had a boosting of their immunity against flu by being infected with flu virus over that time, so there may be immunity gaps in the community that could make it easier for the virus to spread.” However, some experts are now saying that a surge in flu could possibly be delayed until 2023, based on the recent experience of the northern hemisphere. Recently Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced restrictions would be eased further from April 14, allowing non-vaccinated people to attend nearly all venues – pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants, theme parks, casinos and cinemas, weddings, showgrounds, galleries, libraries, museums and stadiums. But Mr Maher says governmentenforced lockdowns or tougher restrictions could be reintroduced. “I think that depends on how bad transmission of both viruses is during the winter season, and whether or not there is a

lot of serious illness and a major impact on our health system,” he says. “Social restrictions have clearly had a role in temporarily helping to limit or slow down the spread of COVID in different settings, and in Australia they have in general worked very well. “While I’m not in the position to have to plan for the complexities of preparing Queensland for the coming winter, I think that state health departments have been well exposed to the lessons of COVID and I would expect that they are planning for the contingency that the winter season is a bad one for both influenza and COVID.” The federal government is gearing up for the expected spike in COVID and influenza infections, earmarking $6 billion in its budget for a winter response plan. Health experts have continued to warn that more transmissible or severe variants of COVID-19 could also emerge. Mr Maher is a senior specialist adviser in health emergencies for Noosa-based Respond Global, which specialises in health crisis management. He was the senior adviser to the Director-General of the WHO

in Geneva. Prior to this, he worked on the frontline of polio eradication and immunisation program management and was appointed as the chief scientist and advisor to the global program in 2012. He expects to see a continued strong emphasis on both influenza and COVID vaccination. “We’ve seen with Omicron that vaccination is not a perfect control measure, but it is very good at reducing individual risk and it does impact on viral transmission, so it has to be considered as the best intervention we have for helping us to deal with COVID in the medium to long term. “Vaccination against influenza is also critical. Getting the composition of the vaccines right from year to year is difficult, but something is always better than nothing and vaccines can really help limit the impact of seasonal influenza.” Dr Rod McClure from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service says the best protection against influenza for people aged six months and older is well-timed vaccination. “Ideally, influenza vaccination should occur before the start of each influenza season. We generally see increased influenza circulation from June. This year may be different given the co-circulation of the COVID-19 virus, the return of international travel and the recent years of very little influenza circulation. “Similarly, the best protection against COVID-19 is being up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters.” An additional winter COVID-19 dose, at least four months after a booster or confirmed infection, is now recommended for groups at highest risk of severe disease, including people aged 65 years and older, immunocompromised people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older.

t is the contest that for nearly five decades has been bringing the heart of the local surfing community together to celebrate a truly special Sunshine Coast legacy. Now in its 48th year, the Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest will take place again this Easter long weekend, highlighting the best in board riding. Attracting stars of the surf and highlighting incredible young local talent, it has been a springboard for many moving into the professional ranks, with past winners including Australian and world champions. It also makes a significant contribution to the community of Caloundra, helping raise the region’s profile through international publicity. The competition is believed to be the second-longest-running surfing competition in Australia, behind the iconic Bells Beach Surf Classic. Named after legendary surfing identities Charles and Marjorie Bendall, it is organised by the WindanSea Boardriders club. Club president Terry Landsberg says it recognises and respects Caloundra’s surfing community and history. “Events like this bring the community, and most importantly the surfing community, together,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “We always think of it as a feel-good event that showcases surfing and respects the wonderful work Ma and Pa did in encouraging the younger surfers in the Caloundra region. “This event really showcases the talent and it is a lovely weekend when a lot of friends and families of the surfing community have the chance to catch up.” Mr Landsberg says 2022’s contest will offer equal prize money for the men’s and women’s divisions and attract the biggest local names on the surfing scene, including previous winners Mitch Parkinson and Taj Stokes.

“Taj was the youngest ever winner of the open men’s division in 2018. “We have Holly Williams competing in the open women’s. She recently qualified for the [World Surf League] Women’s Challenger Series too, which is an incredible achievement for a Sunshine Coast surfer.” Mr Landsberg says the competition is set to become a springboard for creating local talent ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games. One such rising star is under-14 Queensland state champion Hunter Andersson, who at just 12 years old is showing Olympic potential.

“Now that surfing is an Olympic sport, it is a great building block to hopefully see some representation from the Sunshine Coast” The WindanSea member recently returned from Hawaii after taking part in a surf camp with Billabong. “He has also been nominated by surfing Australia as a future Olympian,” Mr Landsberg says. “Now that surfing is an Olympic sport, it is a great building block to hopefully see some representation from the Sunshine Coast.” As well as an exciting competition, WindanSea Boardriders is eagerly awaiting construction to begin on its new clubhouse, following recent application approval after almost eight years of planning. “We have lodged operational work and are now preparing the site with hopes to start work over the next few months,” Mr Landsberg says. myweeklypreview.com.au

RISING STAR At just age 15, Buddina’s Taj Stokes took out the iconic Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest in 2018. The surfer is a rising star of the sport, currently part of the Qualifying Series touring the east coast, which will hopefully lead him up the ranks to be part of the World Surf League Championship Tour. Mr Stokes says he always enjoys the healthy competition and camaraderie that the Pa & Ma Bendall contest attracts to one of the best surf locations on the Coast. He also credits it being a great platform for young surfers to gain exposure. “2017 was my first year competing in the event and it’s always such a great weekend, being the Easter weekend, and we always get such great waves. “All the surfers from across the Sunny Coast and some mates from the Gold Coast get together to do this event and it’s great to catch up with them all.” Hoping to come away with a win, the 19-year-old says he tries to spend as much time in the water before an event as possible. “I surf as much as I can between work and I will go and surf Moffats a few times leading up to the event.”

Marjorie and Charles Bendall settled in Caloundra in the 1950s. There were only a handful of other surfers living locally at the time and they became the mother and father of surfing on the Sunshine Coast. Pa formed the invitational Moffateers club in 1966 to promote integrity and sportsmanship locally in surfing. Using club contests as training and conditioning for more challenging contests, he encouraged the young Moffateers to compete in regional, state and national championships. In 1973 Pa passed away and his funeral service was held overlooking his beloved Moffat waves. Soon after a memorial plaque was unveiled in what is today known as the Ma and Pa Bendall Park. The first Pa Bendall Memorial Contest was held at Moffat Beach in February 1974 in four-foot surf. First prize was $1500, the largest prize offered for any Australian surfing contest at the time. The competition attracted every professional surfer in the country including Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew, Simon Anderson and Hawaiian legend Gerry Lopez, as well as hot local talent. STUDENTS AND SCIENTISTS UNITE Sunshine Coast students are helping researchers identify insects amid hopes they could discover new species. They have already been hard at work, finding caterpillars, grasshoppers, stink bugs, wasps, moths and more. Beerwah State High is one of 17 Queensland schools involved in the citizen science project, Insect Investigators. It is a national initiative, coordinated in Queensland by the University of the Sunshine Coast. Visiting the schools is USC research fellow and insect ecologist Dr Andy Howe. “Students and teachers are so excited about the biodiversity in their own communities,” he says. “We hope they make their own scientific discoveries from the insect world, and maybe get the chance of naming one.” Only 30 per cent of insects in Australia have been scientifically identified. “We need citizen scientists to help us increase that number.”

LOCAL ARTISTS SHINE AT EXHIBITION An exciting celebration of Sunshine Coast artists is now on show in the Local Artists – Local Art Prize exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery until May 8. Caloundra Regional Gallery curator Jo Duke says the prize is an initiative of Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra and celebrates the diversity of visual arts practice across the Sunshine Coast. “The prize invites works across a range of genres, from regional artists depicting local themes and creates a visual embodiment of our spectacular region,” Ms Duke says. “There is something for everyone, with works in all different mediums and in all areas of expression, from realism to abstraction, to patterns formed within the outer and inner landscapes.” The exhibit will present 40 finalists’ works and will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.

5000 MEALS A MAJOR MILESTONE

Heat-seeking drones, detector dogs and scat have been used to determine the population of koalas in the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden. During the three-day operation, 14 koalas were detected – a number higher than expected – all presenting no signs of disease. “We have used a combination of thermal drones to find koalas, then we deploy detection dogs to find fresh scats from each koala,” University of the Sunshine Coast Koala ecologist Dr Romane Cristescu says. “The scats are then analysed to determine, among other things, if chlamydia is present, whether the koala is male or female and if any of the koalas in the reserve are related.” The Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden forms part of a wildlife corridor for the local koala population, which are now considered an endangered species.

A heat-and-eat meal business that promises restaurantquality food has reached a milestone in helping the homeless. The Hatted Chef has provided 5000 meals since launching 18 months ago. The business offers chef-prepared meals for sale through independent food stores and donates 20 per cent of proceeds, or one free meal for every four sold, to Sunny Street. They produce singleserve dishes that are prepared at The Dock Mooloolaba restaurant, and available at White’s IGAs. “We love that we have been able to support the important work of Sunny Street, who provide medical care for the homeless and vulnerable,” executive chef Chris Sell says. “When we first started developing the business, there were a lot of people in need because of the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, so as well as making sure we had work to keep our kitchens open and our staff working, we also wanted to incorporate support for some of those in need.”

NEW SHOPPING CENTRE FOR PALMWOODS A historic Sunshine Coast railway town is poised to welcome a new shopping centre, including a supermarket and specialty stores. An application to build the Palmwoods Village Shopping Centre has been largely approved, with Sunshine Coast Council An artist’s impression of the issuing a development permit for shopping centre at Palmwoods the shopping centre last year. Temporary traffic changes are planned at Forest Glen as part of the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road Interchanges project. The northbound Bruce Highway traffic will be temporarily diverted onto the southbound carriageway of the highway for about 500 metres until mid-2022. Transport and Main Roads North Coast Regional Director Scott Whitaker says the interchange will be upgraded and new two-way service roads will be built on both sides of the highway for local traffic as part of the $301.25 million project. “Motorists will still be able to use Exit 210 to access the Maroochydore Road interchange and we will maintain access to local businesses,” he says. TMR will work to minimise disruption.

He purchased the ticket while travelling through Beaudesert and now plans to sell his house – and even retire. “We’ve been wanting to sell our house and move closer to our parents for a while now,” he says. “I might even retire today; I think this is the perfect time.”

76 DRIVERS CAUGHT OVER THE LIMIT Since March 26, Sunshine Coast police have been performing traffic checks across the region as part of Operation Regain. During a 10-day period, police conducted more than 5000 roadside breath tests (RBTs), and Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho says the results have been disappointing. “During the operation over 500 drivers a day have been subjected to a RBT with one in every 80 drivers tested returning a positive reading over the prescribed legal limit.” Additionally, 316 drivers completed a roadside drug test, with 76 returning a positive result. As part of the operation, Sunshine Coast police also issued 184 speeding related infringement notices, and 46 drivers were caught for poor driving behaviours. myweeklypreview.com.au

The Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) event is a key opportunity for chefs, restaurateurs, cafes, food stores, retailers, accommodation and attraction providers to foster relationships with producers and learn about products. A HAVEN FOR VULNERABLE YOUTH An unused church will become a shelter for homeless youth, providing safety and support to help get them on track.

outh facing homelessness on the Sunshine Coast will soon have access to a safe and supportive facility with an unused Church in Nambour to be repurposed into a shelter. Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS) is set to provide a holistic suite of care and support services for 21 young people onsite at ‘the Church’ youth homeless shelter. The $3.2-million project will re-purpose the ageing building to include 22 fully furnished rooms, including one for an onsite caretaker, complete with an ensuite, basic cooking facilities and a study area with access to shared kitchen, dining and fitness facilities set across two levels. When complete, the project aims to provide more than 7281 nights of accommodation annually with an emphasis on transitioning tenants into new independent living situations. The Church project will build on IFYS’s existing support for youth homelessness, already managing a frontline six-bed emergency shelter on the Sunshine Coast.

young people with their personal goals, developing their independent living skills and role modelling positive behaviours. In a recent announcement, the facility is being boosted thanks to a $790,834 grant as part of the federal government’s Safer Communities funding. Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the Sunshine Coast property boom, coupled with increased cost of living

pressures, is putting pressure on many families and making it difficult to find affordable accommodation options. “This announcement of $790,834 will provide around the clock, onsite wrap-around support for residents of the new homeless centre with a particular focus on ‘learning and earning’ activities that strengthen a young person’s employment options.” The grant will also enable IFYS to provide training for residents of the church with a particular focus on workplace pathways and pay for the operational aspects of the program. Following a significant fundraising campaign, Ms Larter says the project will commence within months, with plans to be operational by Christmas 2022. However, an additional $1.2 million is still required to finalise the initial infrastructure costs. “To date, we have raised a substantial amount of the funds required to ensure we can undertake this new accommodation project, but we are still lacking resources for the final stage of furnishing,” Ms Larter says. magine being a fit and healthy 20-year-old and receiving a cancer diagnosis leaving you in fear of your life and “alienated” from you friends. That was the reality for Shelly Rankin who, after experiencing what she thought was a cold that did not go away, was left in complete shock when her doctor told her she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Having never heard of the disease, it took her a bit to register it was a potentially fatal form of cancer with, at the very least, a gruelling treatment road ahead. “I just felt numb,” Ms Rankin says. “I was just like, ‘Oh. That’s cancer’.”

A week after the diagnosis around Easter last year, she was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties and had 1.5 litres of fluid painfully drained from her lung. Enduring six months and six rounds of chemotherapy Ms Rankin says, treatment aside, receiving a diagnosis like this in her twenties had an impact on her young life. “Nobody really gets how intense it is to have to take on a disease with full-on treatments and everything. I felt alienated as I watched my friends go to uni while I felt stuck in mud taking one step at a time and hoping I would get through.” After treatment, the 21-year-old is in

remission and finally able to think about moving forward with her life. “Blood tests and other scans have shown no evidence of cancer,” she says. “I have six-monthly check-ups and monitors for symptoms, but as far as I know I am cancer free.” Bloomhill Cancer Care was an integral part of Ms Rankin’s treatment and she says the organisation “just got it”. “What’s helped me is having a community who understand. Even if they’re not your age or your cancer, people get it. You just talk to people and keep in touch; find like-minded people. We’re all a lot more mature than others our age.” To help the Sunshine Coast charity continue its work, Bloomhill Cancer Care has launched its Greatest Need Appeal. CEO Christopher John says 2022 marks 25 years of providing personalised support to those touched by cancer. “The Greatest Need Fund is for individuals or organisations who want to give but want their dollars to go toward the most urgent shortfalls, across any area of the organisation, from nurse wages to paying the main operating expenses,” he says. “We are a community-based organisation and receive no ongoing government funding. Almost 100 per cent of our funding comes from our entrepreneurial endeavours and community donations. “Over the past year, we have supported more than 1400 people and provided more than 7120 occasions of nursing, allied health care and wellness activities each year at our wellness centre in Buderim.” In 2022 Bloomhill is also planning to renovate its Buderim wellness centre to provide more therapy rooms, client resources and spaces dedicated to those touched by cancer. FLOOD DONATION DRIVE Almost 60 tonnes of donations have been sent to flood-affected areas of northern New South Wales thanks to the generosity of the Sunshine Coast community and businesses. Campbell Construction Co (CCC), The Surf Club Mooloolaba and QEBS banded together to initiate the CCC Community Flood Relief Drive. The response has seen medical supplies, water, cleaning products, clothes, toys, prams and food fill four large trucks, three vans and a ute that last month made the journey south. CCC’s Ben Campbell cannot believe the devastation he saw after delivering the goods to Evans Head. “I have been to over 30 natural disaster areas and worked in all of them, including cyclones, fires, and this by far is the worst,” he says. “Countless homes and businesses emptied and uninhabitable, with streets lined with endless mud and contents.” Preparations are now underway for a second drive that will address the ongoing needs of the residents as they come to light. A Sunshine Coast organisation and two young people are being recognised in the Glass House region with the announcement of the latest round of Local Heroes Grants. Maleny SES, Kael Thompson and Raylene McSweeny all embody a sense of community spirit, earning them the award, thanks to Member for Glass House Andrew Powell. Acknowledging the hard work of Maleny SES during recent storm and flooding events, the local group will use its funds to purchase PPE lockers at its new complex. At just 14, and holding seven Queensland swimming records, Kael travels seven times a week to attend training an hour’s drive away from her home in Conondale. She will use the grant to assist with travel, uniforms, nomination fees and accommodation to attend the Australian Open Swimming Championships happening this month in Adelaide. Passionate about agriculture, Raylene is a Year 12 student at Maleny State High School. She will use her grant to cover travel costs to Emerald, where she has been offered a place in a five-day LEADAg

LOCAL NEWS patients who chose not to seek treatment for eye disease, instead living with diminished quality of life because they couldn’t get to Brisbane without burdening family. That changed when funds raised through The House the Coast Built led to $430,000 worth of equipment installed at Caloundra Hospital to benefit patients with sight issues. It also played a big part in the public health service recruiting a highly sought-after ophthalmologist to the region. The generous team at Kruger Law, Poole Group and Just Better Care helped raise $30,000 to build a rehabilitation garden for patients with dementia at Nambour Hospital. Music and light therapy resources provide a temporary distraction while we wait for the hospital redevelopment project to finish to complete the garden. These are just some of the many generous locals who have made the hospital experience better. Like dad and nursing director Lee Holmes who will soon compete in the highest and most adventurous marathon in the world – the Everest Marathon – to raise money for distractive resources to support patients suffering symptoms of delirium. GP Dr Jo English will do an epic month-long Gulf to Gulf ride across Australia’s remote outback to raise funds for Dove Palliative Care. Never doubt, each of us can make a difference.

HOW COAST LOCALS HAVE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE So many local health services that our families rely on have been introduced to the Coast, or improved greatly, through the generosity of proactive locals. An enduring investment made by local hospital foundation Wishlist was the Nambour Hospital Cancer Centre, which opened in 2006 after four years of fundraising. The $1.7 million raised transformed local cancer services, reducing the need for patients to make the journey to Brisbane for treatment. I often wonder how great an impact the state-of-the-art equipment and multidisciplinary aspect of the centre had on the services introduced at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital 10 years later. Fast-forward to 2011, Ausmar Homes and the supporters of The House the Coast Built were inspired by stories of the elderly

WHERE ARE THE REAL LEADERS?

A looming federal election has Jane Stephens asking why we’re already sick of the campaigning, and she’s come up with an answer.

he great political slugfest has begun. We are being sent to the polls next month to choose the person we want to speak for us in Commonwealth parliament and make laws that we all must live by, like them or not. But even before the boxing match properly starts, we are tired of it. While this has been blamed on politicians seemingly perpetually campaigning, I contend the real reason is that none – not a single one – of our political leaders truly inspires us. None has given us their ‘why’. The ‘why’ is imperative – as important as the ‘what’ and the ‘how’. The ‘why’ is what inspires people to rally behind a cause, to sit tight in a job when times are tough and to stick with a relationship when it falters. Top coaches use it to help motivate great athletes to become champions. Good counsellors use it to help a stuck person tackle their sticky problem. And strong leaders use it to galvanise support that lasts beyond the next opinion poll. It is one of the key questions in any job interview: why do you want to work

here? The query checks whether the applicant has any sense of the company’s values, culture and ethos. Politicians need to give us their ‘why’. What are their core values, beyond their political party affiliations? What is their motivation for spending this money on that thing or planning this change for that group? A Harvard Business Review article in 2020 on leadership through a time of exponential change contended that so-called sapient leadership brought openness, humility and authenticity to the fore, pointing out that the days of the ‘leader as hero’ model are over. More than a decade ago, a book called Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action introduced a new leadership model. Author Simon Sinek compared the two main ways to influence human behaviour: manipulation and inspiration, arguing inspiration was the more powerful and sustainable of the two. The ripple effects last longer when people are moved rather than manipulated because they are carried by belief rather than lured by temptation. Please, please give us some of that.

What should future leaders really be taught? When it comes to the political kind, Ashley Robinson has a few ideas.

was reading some news recently and came across an interesting story. Questions are being raised about why a foundation which appears to have no staff or office has had $18 million set aside for it by the federal government. It read: “Australian Future Leaders Program is set to receive $18 million over five years and an extra $4 million a year after that. The Prime Minister’s department says the organisation has no office or staff it knows of. However, the department insists it had followed due diligence in awarding the funding.” So what I could make of it was that it will bring young people from all walks of life to mentor them and hopefully find our next corporate, government and political leaders, which in my view would be a massive challenge, particularly the politician part. Corporate shouldn’t be too hard – there are plenty of talented young folk around. Government shouldn’t be too hard – they just have to get them in a room and teach them how to say no to everything or at least respond with more information to the masses and hopefully they will get sick of asking? So there should

be plenty of cash left out of $18 million for the last category – politicians? What a challenge for the Australian Future Leaders Program to turn some young folk into functioning politicians who we would generally be happy with. Imagine that classroom – first lesson should be to tell the truth and make your decisions for the good of the country not with a view to get re-elected. Next lesson: don’t continually try to tell us via media statements, advertising and mail-outs what a good job they do. Show us with actions. Followed by occasionally agree with the opposition when they have a good idea, instead of arguing against it then changing its name and making it your idea. Photo opportunities should turn into rolling up sleeves and actually doing something would be the next lesson. These are just a few of the lessons I would like to see. I am sure you will have some of your own and sadly they will need more than $18 million to break the cycle of what we have become politically, so I am sort of hoping it was an April Fool’s joke because we are continually being treated like fools.

NEW BUT NOT ALWAYS IMPROVED Sami Muirhead has learned some new words, and while she’s a fan of some, there’s one that she just can’t come to terms with.

o stay young at heart, I believe you need to regularly update your sunglasses and your vocabulary. Shrinkage is that unfortunate situation referring to blokes and their body parts, but shrinkflation is a new buzz word that is doing the rounds. Shrinkflation is used when talking about chocolate bars, ice-creams, even the times Netflix gives you a prompt to stop watching before it starts another episode. The price remains the same for these goods and services, but the quantity is shrinking. Drinkflation is another new word that refers to prices going up but pour sizes going down. Virtual fashion is a term being touted around the globe. It means the design and sale of clothing and accessories for virtual platforms and avatars. I hate this idea of it being just fashion on your computer. That is hardly exciting and it will not help us in the least when we need to go out and have literally nothing to wear because we spent our pay on stupid make-believe outfits on the internet. 5 FUN EASTER ACTIVITIES Keep the kids entertained ahead of the long weekend with these colourful and creative DIY craft projects. There’s never been a more fun or easier way to decorate the house!

Create pretty dyed eggs for a decoration (and breakfast!) with a difference. Bring your eggs to boil and cool under cold water. Mix together half a cup of boiling water, one tablespoon of vinegar and your food dye colour of choice. Wearing gloves, or using a large slotted spoon or tongs, dip your eggs and allow to colour for five minutes. Let the eggs dry and then serve, or refrigerate to serve the following morning.

BUNNY GARLAND Simple, yet effective, this pretty wall hanging will brighten your dining or living room. This is your base shape and can be used to create the rest of the cut-outs. Glue on the tails, and it’s ready to hang. You can either glue the bunnies onto the string, or use a small hole punch to string them on.

Create the cylinder body from heavy card stock, or let the kids go wild with paint and empty toilet paper rolls. Stick on some ears, draw on a face and you have some cute bunnies to display. You can also pop one into Easter gift baskets for a personalised touch.

Chattii is a dating app with a difference. Designed for people with disabilities but open to everyone, Chattii is building an inclusive community that celebrates love in all its forms. Co-founder Abbi Brass says the app makes it easier and safer to meet other people with or without a disability for friendship, connection or more. The disability sector worker and mum of a 12-year-old with a disability came up with the idea after many conversations with people in her community about how hard it was to find love. As a sales representative for a wheelchair company, Ms Brass would hear from different clients stories about their love life and their disastrous experiences on mainstream platforms like Tinder. Then, she tried to help someone sign up for dating app Bumble and was blown away by the lack of fields to add information about your disability. With a motto, “see the human, feel the love”, Ms Brass and the team hope Chattii becomes an international platform that opens people’s eyes to a fuller range of human experiences. And that’s not all. The long-term

DON’T BE DISTRACTED BY THE CITY MARKET The Sunshine Coast’s property market will stabilise but for now, it is as strong as it’s ever been. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

alk of weaker demand and heightened residential property supply in the southern capitals splashed across the news may be worrying some buyers and sellers, but the expert advice is don’t be distracted. According to REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella the Queensland market, and in particular the Coast, is sitting in a pocket that can’t be compared to what is reportedly happening down south. “Our market doesn’t always replicate what is happening in Sydney and Melbourne,” she says. Both of those markets have been moving at speed for some time while the Coast market has been moving at a much more modest pace until two years ago when COVID-19 hit, and the world was turned on its head. “We have seen extraordinary demand and price growth, which has been much higher than we have seen historically,” Ms Mercorella says. “The Sunshine Coast in particular has outperformed Brisbane and it’s not just Noosa, it’s really the Sunshine Coast as a whole.”

Based on current data there is no indication the Coast market is slowing. In fact, Ms Mercorella says interstate migration is continuing and there is an expectation that international migration will have a positive impact on the Queensland market. “The way in which the Sunshine Coast market is performing, I think it’s a pretty unique market,” Ms Mercorella says. “Certainly, we haven’t seen any signs it’s slowing down. “What we have seen over a number of years is the Coast property market has

grown from strength to strength. And that’s not just the sales market, it’s also the rental market. It has one of the tightest rental markets in Queensland at the moment.” Going forward, an increase in interest rates, the increasing cost of living and wages growth could force buyers to think more carefully about what they can afford to borrow and how much money they want to put into the residential market. Another uncertainty is the looming election outcome which may put the market into a “holding pattern”. “At some stage our market will start to
