t is the highly anticipated budget, or a “magic pudding” as one economist described it, that will pave the way to the Federal election. On March 29 treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down his fourth budget, promising big spending while showing a sharp reduction in budget deficits over the next few years. A stronger-than-expected economy, a record number of people in employment and a massive spike in commodity prices have the revenue dollars pouring in. But at the same time the treasurer is spending tens of billions of dollars across the board, including on an $8.6 billion support package for households facing cost-ofliving pressures. Weighing in on what the budget means for the region, Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich acknowledges there is little reference to budget savings, but says a balanced budget is unlikely this decade. “[The] budget was focused broadly on the economy and creating jobs, defence and national security, families and the cost

With a federal election looming, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is splashing the cash with his fourth budget. But what’s in it for the Sunshine Coast? WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa with AAP. Prime Minister Scott Morrison looks on as Treasurer Josh Frydenberg hands down the latest budget of living – with a further $8 billion allocated to cost-of-living and tax offsets. “Queensland – and more specifically the Sunshine Coast – fared relatively well with the biggest coup being the $1.6 billion funding allocation to the Beerwah to Maroochydore rail extension. “To my knowledge this may be the largest allocation of funding for a transport infrastructure project in Queensland, possibly even Australia.” There are also plans for a national Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre to be formed at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute, following the allocation of $12.2 million. Ms Zubrinich says small businesses will gain from an extension of the instant asset write-off for another year. “Business owners can claim a 20 per cent tax deduction when investing in external training courses for their staff until 30 June 2024 and can deduct a further 20 per cent for expenses that encourage digital take-up in businesses such as websites,

cloud computing, online sales platforms or portable payment devices,” she adds. “It is also pleasing to see that there are targeted initiatives and incentives to support more apprenticeships, particularly given the expected growth in our region over the next decade.” Wages growth is expected to speed up to 2.75 per cent by end-June, compared with 2.3 per cent currently, and then hit 3.25 per cent in the next financial year. It comes at a time when the unemployment rate is forecast to fall below four per cent for the first time in nearly 50 years. “Treasury has projected the strongest growth in wages for over a decade – we can only wait and see if that eventuates but if so, Australia is certainly in a stronger position than most,” Ms Zubrinich says. “People are in work which is the primary reason the budget bottom line has improved by more than $100 billion on what was previously projected – more people are working and paying taxes and fewer are on welfare.”

• $420 cost-of-living tax offset for low- and middle-income earners, and a $250 cost of living payment for pensioners, welfare recipients, veterans and concession card holders. Petrol and diesel excise will be halved for six months, delivering a saving of $300 for the average household. From July 1, the PBS Safety Net threshold will be reduced for general and concessional patients, lowering out-of-pocket costs for medicines for 2.4 million people. • $2.8 billion for apprentices and $2.2 billion to support Australian industries and universities to develop innovative companies and products. • $21 billion committed for regional transport, water and communications infrastructure. • $6 billion extra for COVID-19 response including a winter response plan. • $1.3 billion to support delivery of the national plan to end violence against women and children 2022-32 and $330.6 million for a national women’s health strategy. • National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation to get a $2 billion top-up to support 10,000 more affordable homes. • $38 billion by 2040 to increase the defence workforce and $270 billion in defence capability investment to 2029/30. • $17.9 billion of priority road and rail infrastructure as part of a $120 billion 10-year pipeline of work. • $468.3 million extra to implement aged care royal commission recommendations. • $1.5 billion over five years for Indigenous Australians in addition to the existing $6.7 billion Indigenous Advancement Strategy. • Extra $1 billion for Great Barrier Reef. • $39.4 billion for National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Happy home The year 2021 has been dubbed the year of renovation, and by all accounts, 2022 is also shaping up to be strong for the industry. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that Aussies spent $2.9 billion on home alterations in the September quarter – a 19.7 per cent increase on the previous year’s reporting. According to a report from industry body hipages, a kitchen, bathroom or living room renovation can start from $10,000 and increase quickly depending on the scale of the project. However, home projects don’t necessarily have to cost a lot. There are plenty of smaller DIY tasks that will brighten up your home. Cherie BARBER Renovation queen Cherie Barber is once again sharing her advice with My Weekly Preview readers. As the founder of Renovating for Profit, Ms Barber is a familiar face on television shows such as Channel Nine’s Space Invaders, Today Extra and popular lifestyle program The Living Room on Network Ten. Ms Barber has renovated more than 150 properties valued at more than $75 million and trained more than 20,000 students through her renovation school. This week, Ms Barber shares advice on

how to create a healthy and happy home with a few simple updates. “When you start to think about the concept of a happy and healthy home, what doesn’t spring to mind is the modern world we live in today,” Ms Barber says. “It’s hard to imagine life before mobile phones, laptops, iPads and all the other modern devices we enjoy today. But the difficulty is tearing ourselves away from these very things, when in all truthfulness, we probably should be quietly curled up on the lounge with a good book and a cuppa. “It’s like we almost have to force ourselves to take time out from the digital world we live in. “With this infiltration of digital technology in our lives every single day, homeowners and renters have been very quick to hop on the fast-growing trend to create home environments that cocoon us from this manufactured, artificial world to one that reconnects us with the natural world. More than ever, we want to bring peace and Zen into our homes and lives generally.”

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE Ms Barber says there are plenty of simple ways to connect to nature in the home environment. “Designers have really cottoned on to this. By choosing colours, textures, materials and even smells that remind us of nature, and by creating homes filled with sunlight, natural

ventilation, green plants and leafy views, we can get as close as possible to the natural world outside.” The biophilic design concept is a growing movement that centres on connecting humans to nature through architectural and style elements to improve wellbeing. Project: Why not consider installing a vertical garden, plant an edible garden or buy a DIY water feature and install it in your garden.

Tip! Planting an edible garden? Broccoli, lettuce, spinach, spring onion, rosemary, thyme and coriander are all great varieties to plant during southeast Queensland’s autumn months.

Second opinions – during the design phase, it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion from a professional. Fresh eyes can bring fresh ideas. 7. Shop around – always get a minimum of three quotes for your works and shop around for good deals on materials and fixtures. A little work on your behalf can save thousands.

STYLE FILE Furnishings, textiles and decor accents are key to creating a comfortable and happy home. Choose pieces that bring a smile to your face, and that you connect with through colour and texture. For a DIY project, Ms Barber says creating a feature of contrasting textures is the tick to nailing an organic, natural home environment. “In one of my projects, I used old, recycled timber planks as feature walls in the living area and bedrooms. They were rustic looking with the old paint and nail holes still on them.”

Tip: ON TREND Mix and match different textures to create visual interest. Wicker baskets, seagrass mats, rattan furniture, and linen bedding are natural textural elements that look great when combined with colour, or glossy green indoor plants.

COLOUR SPLASH Colour is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to transform your home. “It’s actually a proven science that colour has a powerful impact on our mental state and emotions,” Ms Barber says. Project: Consider the use of colour in your paint, furnishings and accessories. Take some time to research the psychology behind colours and style based on this. Blues and greens are considered calming. These can be perfect for creating serene, nature-based colour schemes that naturally relax us. So grab a brush and get to work creating a new feature wall. If you’re looking for some colour inspo for your home, just put ‘nature-based colour palettes’ into Pinterest and you’ll find a zillion calming colour schemes.

Wallpaper can be an effective way to introduce texture into your home. “Not all wallpapers are decorative and meant to be a stand-out feature,” Ms Barber says. “Many of the ones you can buy now are purely just for their textural effect. For example, you can get seagrass wallpapers which are a lot less interesting to look at visually, but they add another layer of texture to any room that can help your home feel like it’s more connected to nature.” Project: We recommend buying wallpaper from a local retailer. This way you can view the quality and material and know exactly what you are buying. DIY 1. Clean the wall and smooth over any bumps or cracks, and then prime it. 2. In the middle of the wall hold up your first piece with the help of a plumb line, level or laser level. Remember, walls and ceilings can be uneven, so don’t rely on them. 3. Apply paste to the wall and place the paper. Leave about 10 centimetres at the top and the bottom. 4. Apply the next strip, aligning the pattern, but don’t overlap. 5. Once you’re happy with the position of the strips, trim the top and bottom with a sharp knife.

8. Be patient – we live in a world of want it and get it now. This isn’t how design and construction work happens. Be patient and let your team ensure the job is done thoroughly and properly.

Cassandra FENAUGHTY My Weekly Preview writer and Sunshine Coast-based landscape architect Cassandra Fenaughty says make the most of the Easter break to refresh your home. Ms Fenaughty, who has more than 20 years’ industry experience and owns a renovation and landscaping concept design business, has recently completed her fourth home renovation project.

Here are her 10 top tips for kicking off a renovation – no matter how big or small.

Be flexible – it’s important to accept at the start of the project that there may be changes along the way, so work with your designers and trades to work out how to get the best possible outcome within the constraints of your existing home and your budget. 10. Enjoy – renovating can be stressful at times, but watching your home be transformed is one of the most satisfying things you can embark upon. he Sunshine Coast’s music scene is going from strength to strength as a local venue has been named one of Queensland’s best. In a major win for NightQuarter Sunshine Coast, the popular Birtinya

location has been named Best Regional Venue at the Queensland Music Awards (QMA) recently held in Brisbane. In a hotly contested category, the venue went up against other Sunshine Coast and regional locations, with the award determined through people’s

choice and a QMA judging panel of industry heavyweights. Owners Michelle Christoe and Ian van der Woude say they are extremely proud of this achievement, especially after a difficult few years for the entertainment industry. “It has been a tough year for all of the music industry and it has been good to reconnect with industry to celebrate that we have all made it through the pandemic, cyclones and floods this year,” Ms Christoe says. “We want to thank everyone including QMusic and the Sunshine Coast music community for their unwavering support as we wouldn’t be standing here today without them. “The Sunshine Coast has a vibrant nightlife and an ecosystem of live music venues. ENDEAVOUR FOUNDATION’S PRIZE HOME A WINNER The lottery prizes might be a lot more impressive but Endeavour’s mission is the same as it was 60 years ago – to raise funds for children in need.

rom meat trays to Holden cars and a herd of cows, an amazing array of items has helped fund the Endeavour Foundation’s initiatives over the past 60 years. The latest prize is the most impressive so far – a custom-built home in Maleny boasting stunning views and a pool. Endeavour Foundation head of lotteries Kirsty Moore says the $2.19 million luxury home shows just how far the Endeavour Foundation Lotteries’ fundraising efforts have come. “In the early days, we were relying on meat trays and hat parades to fund our valuable programs,” Ms Moore says. “In 1962, we offered our first prize home – a property … on the Darling Downs. “Before long there were art unions for seaside blocks, sugar cane farms and cattle properties across Queensland.” She says the homes have changed over the years to reflect the great Australian dream, but the ultimate goal of fundraising has remained the same. “If it wasn’t for the support of the lottery draws, we would not be able to fund our initiatives, which help provide employment, accommodation and greater

Festival co-organiser and endED co-founder Mark Forbes says the event has been in the works for more than a year and the result is a real community effort. “The Nurture Festival has pulled together a number of passionate

Nurture Festival is happening on May 7 at Lake Kawana and has been created to address alarming youth mental health statistics emerging on the Sunshine Coast. Appealing to 15-to 25-year-olds, the event will bring together charities, organisations and professionals to engage and offer support with suicide prevention, loneliness and isolation, eating disorders,

businesses, organisations and individuals who want to see a change in how our youth are being supported,” he says. “The Sunshine Coast is a very supportive and nurturing community and so it has been no surprise that we have seen so many people who want to be involved.” The confronting motivation behind the event is the statistics on youth suicide in the Sunshine Coast region. Comunite’z director Nathan Taylor says recent data from The Alliance reveals an estimated 784 fatal and non-fatal suicide attempts on the Coast each year. “Alarmingly, rates of suicide on the Sunshine Coast are 9.1 per cent higher than the Australian average, and in addition to this, it is reported that young Australians report the highest rates of loneliness, despite being in contact with large numbers of people every day at school, university or work,” Mr Taylor says. “Too many times a young person can’t find the lived experience support they need, or know where to turn if they are struggling. The goal is that the Nurture Festival platform will introduce them to activities or support mechanisms.” There will also be a Talk Tent providing an informative and fun series of chats, as well as local schools performing dance and music routines. “We want to provide a safe space for youth to open up and have a conversation about how they may be feeling and provide them with connections they need to move forward,” Mr Forbes says. “We know there is no single solution to improving someone’s mental health, but we know that when people feel like they have a ‘team’ of supporters and have the opportunity to talk things through, someone struggling is less likely to act.” As Nurture Festival and Mental Health Foundation ambassador, singer Jade

Jaguar Jonze Holland knows all too well how important it is to seek the help you need when it feels like your world turns upside down. “I was only 21 and had been severely let down with fake tickets to the UK to take up a lucrative recording contract,” she says. “I experienced such severe depression that I shut myself away for an entire year, gave up music and didn’t hum a single tune; I was drinking a bit and not living a life at all. “Dad was the one who sat me down and told me that seeking help was nothing to be ashamed of and that he had in fact done the same thing only 10 years earlier.” Now 31, Ms Holland has completed 14 stints at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and has entertained Australian troops in Afghanistan, Israel and Iraq. “I use my music as not only a way to convey my story but also to connect to a community of people who have similar experiences or feelings to me,” she says. An exciting new exhibition is launching on the Sunshine Coast – and it is made up of 628,513 pieces of a popular childhood toy. In the first event of its kind for the region, LEGO’s Brickman Cities spectacular is now open at The Wharf Mooloolaba. It gives children – and adults – the opportunity to explore cities like New York and London through a display of colourful bricks. The display took around 2280 hours to put together and it features buildings taller than children. Merlin Entertainments, which operates SEALIFE Sunshine Coast and LEGOLAND Parks, has partnered with The Brickman to bring the exciting exhibition to life. Brickman Cities will run until July 17. More construction and health jobs will be created on the Coast after the approval of a development application for a new $100-million private hospital in Maroochydore. The Maroochydore Private Hospital will be an eight-storey medical and teaching facility with high-end amenities and featuring a rooftop relaxation area for staff. The state-of-the-art hospital will service people living in Maroochydore and the wider region and will have a focus on musculo-skeletal conditions. The hospital component will provide surgical specialties along with ancillary healthcare services and will have a comprehensive pain management, sports medicine and allied health offering. Construction is expected to begin mid-year.

PLANT A TREE FOR THE QUEEN In honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her Platinum Jubilee, community organisations on the Sunshine Coast will have the opportunity to access funding to plant trees as part of the celebrations. To play a part in the nationwide Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program, grants from $2500 to $20,000 will be available to a broad range of organisations. To be considered, projects must include formal commemorative events in 2022 to mark the Jubilee, plantings of regionally appropriate tree species, and installation of commemorative signage or plaques. FLY DIRECT TO TAMWORTH Just a month after announcing its plans for the Coast, the nation’s only independent carrier has added another route to its offerings. Low-cost airline Bonza will fly direct to Tamworth from the Coast. That takes the number of routes from here to 13 locations across Australia, most of which are not serviced by any other airline. Bonza flights are expected to be on sale after Easter with its Boeing 737 MAX planes to start taking off around July, subject to regulatory approval. Travellers can expect to pay an average of $50 to $100 for a one-to-two-hour flight. Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie is welcoming the news. “This announcement is evidence of our airport providing more services to more destinations at more consistent times and connecting Sunshine Coast residents to more of Australia,” he says.

$11.7MILLION

Work is underway on 33 new social housing homes in Beerwah. The $11.7-million project will provide homes for residents in need, including seniors, people with disabilities, singles and couples. The townhouses are made up of 17 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom units. The project is a joint partnership between the Queensland government and community housing providers Coast2Bay Housing Group. It will support 29 full-time equivalent local jobs in the building and construction industry, as well as many more in the building supply chain. “We are the largest community housing provider in this region, and we pride ourselves in delivering high quality, architecturally designed homes that people and families enjoy living in,” Coast2Bay Housing Group CEO Andrew Elvin says.

STAGE THREE OF BOKBEACH REVEALED A boutique retail and dining centre will set a new benchmark on the Sunshine Coast with the latest stage of the of BokBeach Corner development. Stage three of the new precinct on the Nicklin Way at Bokarina will include a gourmet deli, artisan coffee roaster, butcher, fresh food market, rooftop bar, cafes and restaurants. Other tenants will include a childcare centre and fitness facility. Sydney-based developer, Simon Harvey from BeauGroup, is modelling his vision off his Surfers Paradise offering, Capri on Via Roma, which he recently completed with the arrival of Harris Farm Markets. “We’re excited to focus our efforts on our new retail hub — BokBeach Corner — on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Harvey says. KAWANA SWIM SCHOOL OFFERS ALL-INCLUSIVE CLASSES Rackley Swimming Kawana is removing barriers for people with disabilities with inclusive learn-to-swim classes. This program is helping more Sunshine Coast locals to develop a love of the sport of swimming ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the region. The swim school is able to access a range of AUSTSWIM programs aimed at ensuring people with a disability, their families and carers are supported to participate in, contribute to and benefit from the same community activities as everyone else. Rackley Swimming Kawana Swim School manager Kim Rigby says swim instructors have undertaken subsidised training opportunities to complete AUSTSWIM teaching courses. “We now have 34 children with a disability taking swimming classes, from one-one-one time for students that have sensory needs, and infants learning to swim all the way through to a teenager who is a multi-class national swimmer in the junior squad,” Ms Rigby says.

The centre’s latest learn-to-swim teaching qualification graduate Sarah Wallace knows all too well the importance of inclusion and representation. The 19-year-old Paralympic Games hopeful, who was inspired to take up swimming at the age of six when she met Athens silver medallist Ricardo Moffatti, now aims to become a swim teacher. “There are no limits for people with a disability once they are given an opportunity and some barriers are removed,” she says. “Representation is important because when you see people like you being successful, it gives you inspiration and a greater belief that anything is possible.” Ms Rigby says students will be inspired by Miss Wallace. “I’m sure that she could play a part in creating the next generation of Australia Paralympic stars.” Rackley Swimming Kawana will host a AUSTSWIM Making Aquatics a Terrific Experience course on May 11. Dr Abbe Anderson and Dr David Rowlands OAM are the newest members of the nine-person board. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath says they are welcome additions to the board given their backgrounds. “Dr Rowlands is a practising GP and is clearly dedicated to improving health and wellbeing for Queenslanders, having also served as

LIFESAVING CLUBS GET FEDERAL FUNDING BOOST Five surf lifesaving clubs across the Sunshine Coast have been given an important boost to purchase lifesaving equipment to prevent drownings on our beaches. Alexandra Headland, Dicky Beach, Kawana, Mooloolaba and MetropolitanCaloundra clubs can access up to $10,000 each from the federal government’s Beach Safety Equipment Fund. As a surf lifesaving patrol captain himself, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says this support for local surf lifesaving clubs enables them to continue vital work on the sand and in the water.

“Surf lifesavers deliver a critical service to families on the Sunshine Coast in keeping our beaches and beachgoers safe, and providing swimming, first aid and critical incident training,” Mr Wallace says. “They also play a key role in emergency response in relation to coastal hazards and inundation, as we have seen over the last couple of months. “Whether it’s tools for first aid training, rescue boards, upgrades to inflatable rescue boats and radios, this funding ensures that clubs across the Sunshine Coast have access to the equipment they need to save lives on our beaches.”

POLICE TALK Sunshine Coast police targeting drivers to reduce the road toll Easter is fast approaching, and road safety is always a major focus for the Queensland Police Service. Sunshine Coast police are currently conducting ‘Operation Regain’, which will see saturated police patrols over the next month to enforce current road use legislation to make the roads safer. The aim of the operation is to patrol the local road network in a bid to catch drivers engaging in the fatal five – speeding, drink/drug driving, not wearing seat belts, fatigue and distractions. Recently, the Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol team executed ‘Operation Saturation’, which saw the officers conduct more than 230 random breath tests over a four-day period. There were more than 200 infringement notices issued to drivers not abiding by the road rules. Police will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to the fatal five. Speeding is a major factor in serious and fatal traffic crashes. Speeding over the limit is sufficient to see a driver double the risk of a crash. Drink/drug driving is the number one factor in more than 20 per cent of fatal

crashes in Queensland. Drug driving is also an increasing issue associated with fatal crashes. Wearing seat belts is a key factor in reducing the road toll. Failing to wear a seat belt will cost $413 and an additional three demerit points for yourself or a passenger. Fatigue is a high-risk behaviour that can affect anyone, even the most experienced drivers. Get enough quality sleep before a long drive. In terms of distractions, mobile phones are one of the main causes of road crashes. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving. The infringement notice is $1033 and four demerit points and double demerit points for the second offence recorded within a year. Police can be anywhere, anytime! Drive safe.

KUNDA PARK BUSINESS CELEBRATES A Kunda Park business that has been integral in the growth of the ‘lock out tag out’ process across Australia is celebrating 30 years. An electrician by trade, Erik Larsen, with the support of his wife Tove, began Cirlock in 1992 from the kitchen table of his Mount Isa home when the need for lock-out devices for electrical breakers was thrust into the spotlight as a matter of health and safety. “Wholesalers would contact me about a gap in market, or a product customers had asked for, and I would develop it, and that is where products like our cable lock outs and lock boxes were born,” he says. Relocating the business to Kunda Park in 2004, Circlok has since become a real family affair with Mr Larsen’s daughter, son-in-law and son all coming on board. Today Cirlock products are used as part of the health and safety procedures in many industries including mines, councils, waterworks and power stations across the country, with many products proudly showcasing the ‘Made in Australia’ green kangaroo.

While everyone had something to say about ‘the slap’ the Prime Minister should have kept quiet, writes Jane Stephens.

t is The Slap that continues to reverberate around the world. It kicked off when actor Will Smith did his ’nana over a harsh joke Oscars host Chris Rock made about Jada Pinkett Smith. Will Smith strode onto the stage and clocked Rock, and then there was rocking all over the world. The immediate responses were strange. Smith was consoled, Rock disappeared – so the instinct was to comfort the perpetrator, not the victim. The Academy Awards room, the online and TV audiences and the internet went into overdrive. Some celebs said they wished their man would stand up for them like that. Some said picking on a person’s health condition was not cool. Many were rightly horrified at Smith’s violence. But soon after, when he went up to accept the Best Actor gong, he said he was sorry – sort of. Then the flames were fanned here, when the Prime Minister made mention of it on Brisbane radio. Why on earth would he weigh in? Why didn’t he just back away, sensing danger? With an election looming it would have been prudent, but in an effort to be jolly and friendly, our PM couldn’t help himself.

He was asked if he had ever felt the need to cross the floor to slap someone in Parliament. “I’m also fiercely defensive of anyone who would say anything about Jenny too, so I can understand it,” he chortled. And he added, somewhat lamely: “That’s not how you roll.” Good grief. He missed his chance to note that a physical response to a verbal lashing is never okay, even if in defence of a loved one. He also could have said violence should never be conflated as a sign of love. He could have said women as empowered as Jada or Jen are unlikely to need a knight in shining armour. But he didn’t. And wait, there’s more. Upset is rippling over the ill-conceived action of the juniors in the PM’s party – the Young Liberals – when they joined in the reaction avalanche on social media. They posted a mocked-up version of a still of the incident, positioning Rock as hard-working Australians and Smith as Labor’s higher taxes. The meme (now taken down) has led to a political skirmish on both social and legacy media. And so the rocking around the world continues. These are strange times.

y dearly beloved had a small operation the other day on her right hand, which she normally does everything with. I mean everything. And I was engaged to do everything for her, except for one thing which I begged her to use her other hand for – lucky for me she was successful. The other week I wrote about being in lockdown, which was a window I looked into for retirement and didn’t much like the view. Being the right hand of the boss of me was another reminder that in retirement I will need a hobby – one that gets some distance between us on a semi regular basis (well, let’s go for regular). I was pondering how much I would delve into being the right hand when I heard a reverse beeper in the driveway. It was a click, pick and pay Woolies truck delivering to the new neighbours, which made me think about old mate’s version of pick, click and pay last week. She clicks, or in fact points, her fingers of her left hand, I pick and pay. Great system. I tried to talk her into letting me go grocery shopping by myself but got a roll

of her eyes and a “by the time I explain it all to you, take pictures it will be easier to both go. At least I know what to do.” As painful as that trip to Woolies was for both of us, I still learnt more about old mate. Like she picks everything she needs for her flock of birds whether on special or not, apart from refusing to pay $1.50 per single passion fruit. But everything else has to be on special, especially if it’s something I want. The Arnott’s biscuit aisle didn’t have one bloody special ticket in sight, so no biscuits for the fat boy. We painfully got through the list, the looking, the checking what weight or metric volume, expiry date versus price. Wow. We ended up at the deli and she headed straight for the prime grain-fed Wagyu beef, not on special. She didn’t even ask how much a kilo it was, just ordered it and I picked it up in its own special brown bag. As I fondled the beautiful lump of meat I thought, finally something I like. It must be the way I was looking at it because she said, “George will like that”. Alas, it was for George the kelpie cross. Another window for retirement and another bracing view of what’s to come.

Sami Muirhead says Easter is a time for Netflix, reading, eating too much chocolate, and a Channing Tatum flick at the movies.

he countdown is on until one of the best times of the year, Easter! I love the cooler weather, the endless bowls of tiny chocolate eggs and, compared to Christmas, there is so much less pressure to catch up with every single friend and family member you have had contact with over the past three decades. Amen to that! I am planning to binge season two of Bridgerton on Netflix, and finally read a pile of books I have been collecting. Top of my book list are The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention by Johann Hari, and Run Rose Run by none other than Dolly Parton and James Patterson. I love Dolly. Who doesn’t love Dolly with her beautiful brain and creative song-writing skills and million-dollar empire? I tell you what I do not love and that is a harsh slice of reality. I wish I had not read a recent article by Michelle Bridges, the fitness guru. It asks her what you should do if you eat an entire Lindt bunny this Easter. My answer was perhaps you should eat a second one while still wearing your pyjamas at lunch time. Perhaps you should high five yourself.

Nope. Michelle’s response was a lot more sobering as she outlined the fact it requires an equivalent of 269 burpees, 401 squats, or 45 minutes of running to burn off the bunny completely. Sorry to stay on this Debbie Downer path, but apparently a classic hot cross bun takes 145 burpees or 20 minutes of running to burn off. That is depressing. So let’s cheer ourselves up by thinking about a big bucket of popcorn with a frozen coke chaser. Of course, I refer to the movie menu. I am also hoping to get to the real movies this Easter and see that new Channing Tatum movie about him and a dog that the powerhouses of Hollywood have called the catchy name of Dog. I think this movie was made for many of us – does it get better than old Magic Mike and a dog on the big screen? My favourite movie is The Vow and there is a scene where a shirtless and forlorn Channing holds a cat to his torso and cuddles it. It is a cinematic masterpiece. I can only imagine how much so many of us will gain from an hour and 41 minutes of Channing hanging out with a canine on the big screen. That is my Easter gift to you all.

LABOR STILL AHEAD A swing towards Labor is on the cards at the election in May, but polls suggest the Coalition may be inching forwards. WORDS: AAP.

senior minister has defended the Coalition’s poor standing in the latest set of opinion polls, ahead of the government firing the starting gun on the election. A newspoll suggests the Coalition is closing the gap on the primary vote, with support for Labor slipping slightly in the wake of the federal budget, but the Opposition still appears in line for victory. The poll, conducted for The Australian, shows 38 per cent of voters plumping for Labor to form the next government – a fall of three percentage points since the last survey – with the Coalition improving a point to 36 per cent. The findings mean the primary contest has tightened to just two points from a six-point margin three weeks ago. On a two-party preferred basis, Labor is ahead 54 per cent to 46 per cent for the government, which if realised at the May election could translate to a national swing of more than five per cent. But Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says while the polls aren’t being ignored, it’s not the first time the Coalition has been behind in the leadup to an election. Labor’s primary vote slip appeared to have been picked up by the Greens, which saw a two-point jump in support to 10 per cent, while Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and the United Australia Party remain unchanged on three per cent. Mr Albanese is one point ahead of Scott Morrison as preferred prime minister in an Ipsos poll, with 38 per cent of Australians leaning toward the Opposition leader. The Labor leader was in Brisbane

Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese recently alongside Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to spruik a promise to reduce road congestion in the capital. Mr Albanese says he’s hopeful about winning seats in Queensland. “We are campaigning strongly across the board and one of the things about Queensland is when it swings, it swings big,” he told Brisbane radio 4BC. “One of the things that strikes me in seats like Brisbane is people come up and talk about climate change, and they know Scott Morrison just hasn’t taken that issue seriously.” Mr Morrison will be in Melbourne spruiking the government’s manufacturing and apprenticeships credentials, following last week’s budget which included a cash bonus for apprentices . Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says the budget outlined a clear choice on a stronger economy underpinned by large infrastructure projects: “(Infrastructure) is something our nation has got to do in light of the circumstances of what we see with China pushing forward and becoming a real and imminent threat to Australia,” he told the Seven Network. – AAP

MEMORY AND HEARING If your ears can’t pick up sounds, your hearing nerves will send fewer signals to your brain, depriving it of the stimulation it needs. When you are trying hard to listen, your brain may go through cognitive overload. THE BUZZ AROUND SKIN REJUVENATION AND COLLAGEN Collagen is getting a lot of traction in health discussions at the moment as people begin to realise how important it is, not just for keeping our skin firm and youthful, but for its effect on overall health. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our system and is essentially amino acids bundled together to form collagen fibres. Think if it as a kind of adhesive that maintains the strength and shape of our body. Healthy levels of collagen production will be felt by our skin, tendons, bones, cartilage, blood and blood vessels. As we age, (and sadly the tipping point for that in terms of collagen production is our late twenties), we begin to lose collagen and our skin becomes drier and less elastic. This visible sign of ageing is only the outermost evidence of what’s going on with all the connective tissue in our body. So, do we have to just give in to the slow and predictable decline in our collagen production or is there something we can do? There absolutely is! But the key is to approach this from the inside out. It’s great to look and feel good about the parts of us that the world sees, but if we’re fundamentally unhealthy, a young-looking corpse isn’t really what we’re aiming for! There’s some great creams and serums on the market , which add moisture to the skin and genuinely reduce fine lines and

wrinkles. There’s also some very effective ultrasound and IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments available that target specific layers of the skin to generate the growth of new collagen. So that’s half the issue. The other half is making sure your body has the building blocks for making its own collagen, which is theoretically the best way for us to look and feel our best. That may mean supplementing with collagen boosters. The jury is still out on whether taking a collagen supplement works because it’s laying down collagen in our body, or if it’s just the amino acids in the collagen boosting our body’s own collagen-making potential. Recovery after an anterior total hip replacement

Over the years, I have seen many people achieve incredible life-changing results through exercise. However, when faced with adversity, or a situation beyond their control, they reverted to old patterns, resulting in all of their hard work and gains being undone. Whether it be working on personal, career or health goals, it is hard to watch things unravel, so it’s important to be aware of your actions and reset your mindset every day when faced with adversity. When things are really challenging, break your big goals down into daily goals to minimise overwhelm. To keep moving forward it is important to feel you are achieving goals – even if they are very small ones. Keep your daily routine as close to normal as you can. Eat properly and continue to exercise (even if it’s a walk around the block). You must keep turning up to your day. This is important because once you lose your routine, and inconsistency sets in, your discipline will disappear soon after. So, control the controllable, make simple and achievable lists of what you need to do each day and make choices that you know are good for you and you will be back on track before you know it.

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they can comfortably ambulate after an anterior total hip replacement. We typically mobilise patients within hours of their surgery. Most of our patients usually rapidly progress to being independent on crutches and require them for only one to two weeks. There are many factors that dictate how long a patient needs to stay in hospital but generally getting back to your home environment as soon as it is safe to do so is an important component of your physical as well as your psychological recovery. Excessive physical activity in the first two months after a hip replacement is counterproductive. We generally recommend gentle walking and stretching. Many patients are safe to drive after just three to four weeks and can perform most of their everyday activities within six weeks. For patients who enjoy more extreme activities such as surfing, they should wait at least three months to return. All patients are different, and you should discuss your specific situation with your orthopaedic surgeon.

MORE MONEY FROM JULY FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS It’s all in the fine detail when it comes to what first home buyers are entitled to. The key is to do your homework. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ast Tuesday’s Budget announcements ramp up the Federal Government’s push to get more buyers into their first home but behind the grants is a lot of fine detail. In short, the Morrison Government is expanding the Home Guarantee Scheme, introducing a Regional Home Guarantee and doubling the number of places under the Family Home Guarantee. That is all in addition to the increase in the drawdown of superannuation funds released under the First Home Super Saver Scheme. There is complexity in the detail behind each scheme, which first home buyer specialist and owner of yourfirsthome.co Troy Sussman said needs to be understood before buyer’s step into the market. For example, he said with the First Home Guarantee Scheme, each local government area has its own price cap range, which means a buyer is limited to what they can spend in the area they want to buy into. The trick is for a buyer to know how to make these grants work for them. “You can use multiple grants,” Mr Sussman said. “There is a whole lot more out there in addition to what was announced in the

Buying an established home or

apartment however limits the purchase grants available to buyers. “First home buyers are better off buying a new property because they get far more grants,” Mr Sussman said. “It’s important that these guys don’t fear that there are no properties on the Coast because when you speak with the right people there are opportunities out there,” he added. Mr Sussman offered a tip for renters looking to buy. If they are renting for more than six months through a real estate agency and have their name on the lease, some banks will look at the rent as savings.

here were plenty of happy tears shed as the vendor handed over the reins after over three decades of family memories created around the lovingly kept home at 23 Merval Court in Mons.

“The house has character with lots of timber and magic views,” Ray White agent Kylie Kris said. Interested local and interstate buyers saw the home as an opportunity to refurbish, expand or just simply move in and enjoy. “Everybody that came there said it was the happiest garden they have seen,” Ms Kris said. “The vendor loved her garden. It was very consistent with the vibe and feeling and energy in that place. You don’t get that with all homes. “Even though you are eight minutes from Buderim, it felt like you were somewhere else.” On Saturday two bidders took up the final auction battle once the bidding reached $895,000 going up in “strong bids” of $25,000 lots Ms Kris said. “There was hardly any pausing or quietness.” The three-bedroom home which sits on a large land parcel finally sold under the hammer for $1.1 million to a local family. “After everyone had left, I had the buyers there and the seller,” Ms Kris said. “It was very emotional. The seller was crying, the buyers were crying – but they were tears of happiness.”

THIRD TIME LUCKY IN ALEX HEADLAND He was that close twice before, but after this last weekend, the fellow who signed on the dotted line for the magnificent three-bedroom home at 44 Mary Street in Alexandra Headland can finally rest easy. The home sold under the hammer for $3.25 million. It last sold in April 2017 for $1.9 million. “He has wanted to live in that home forever,” Next Property Group agent Richard Scrivener said. The buyer had tried twice before to secure the home but somehow life didn’t line up with this desire. But now, he has the home of his dreams. “It’s the biggest block in Alex. It’s over 1000 square metres,” Mr Scrivener said. “Most of the blocks in Alex are 540 or 550 squares so this is double in size. It’s quite private on a nice big block with plenty of storage and places to hide cars.”

There were two people battling it out by then as the bidding went up in $5000 lots.” The townhouse sold under the hammer for $690,000 to a couple with a young family.

Ray White’s James Goldsworthy was happy to hand over for once the gavel to his junior associate of five years Taylor Sierp when it came time to sell the investment property owned by Mr Goldsworthy’s parents. It seems that property is in the blood of this family. In his 18-year career as a real estate agent Mr Goldsworthy has sold three investment properties for his parents. For the auction of 40 Robur Crescent in Mountain Creek, Mr Sierp was in the hot seat as four registered bidders lined up to secure the four-bedroom home. The bidding reached $888,000 then two small bids came in to take the final price up and the hammer down at $890,000 in favour of a young couple who work at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. There was a lot of excitement at the end of the auction as the couple locked in their first home.
