Welcome to our first edition of the new year! I trust your holidays were a celebration of love and laughter. In this week’s magazine we have a great mix of stories, fashion, entertainment and property. The story of little Tallulah, who features on our cover, will surely pull at your heartstrings. It’s an obvious statement, but becoming a parent changes your entire life. Sure, there’s the no sleep (surely I’m not alone here!) and the constant sense you are refereeing energetic and determined tiny people. Not to mention navigating sickness, juggling work and family. But the changes I refer to in this instance are on an emotional level. These changes bring that fierce love and protection you feel towards your babies.

These feelings ring particularly true for the Whitrod family. How do we feel about

2022?

GROWTH WILL BE SLOW

Another year, another COVID variant. But how are Australians feeling about the year ahead? We take a look at the poll numbers. WORDS: Alex Mitchell, AAP.

Victoria is the most optimistic state, with 46 per cent of respondents believing 2022 will be better, followed by New South Wales where hope springs eternal for 44 per cent of people. In Queensland, only 29 per cent of people are similarly optimistic. Just 24 per cent of Western Australians think this year holds better things, followed by 22 and 20 per cent of people in South Australia and Tasmania, respectively. Ipsos surveyed people across more than 30 countries about their expectations between October and November. Of the 1000-odd polled in Australia, 82 per cent expect 2022 to be better. This exceeds global optimism averaged at 77 per cent in various countries including the United States, Canada, Israel, China, the Netherlands, Great Britain and South Africa. “Despite another tough year, particularly after it started relatively optimistically, Australians continue to show their positivity, optimism and ability to bounce back,” Ipsos’ Australian director David Elliott says. Some 69 per cent of Australians think

But its latest snapshot of 1184 people in late November shows 23 per cent think 2022 will be even worse than last year while 31 believe it will be the same. “During the past two years, the only certainty we have had during the pandemic has been dealing with uncertainty,” Roy Morgan chief executive Michele Levine says. “The emergence of the Omicron variant shows there will still be a large degree of uncertainty going forward into 2022.”

Australia’s population levels face a slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic off the back of harsh international travel restrictions and a loss of skilled migrants. New figures from the Centre for Population show the rebound is set to take years. Population growth is forecast to amount to just 0.3 per cent in 2021/22 before rising to 1.4 per cent by 2024/25. Populations across every jurisdiction except the Northern Territory are set to record a fall in 2020/21 compared with 2019/20 levels. Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar says a fall in migration levels is a major contributor to the drop. “This largely reflects restrictions on international borders and the impact on net overseas migration, typically the main source of Australia’s population growth,” he says. Net overseas migration has fallen from a net inflow of 193,000 people in 2019/20 to a net outflow of 100,000 in 2020/21. There was a slight improvement forecast for this financial year, with a net outflow of just 41,000 in 2021/22. As border restrictions ease and overseas migration returns, capital cities are forecast to have higher growth rates. Mr Sukkar says high growth rates will return for major cities from 2022/23 once regular travel resumes. -AAP

The Whitrod family and (inset) Tallulah Moon

A new purpose After a mad dash home from overseas and a devastating diagnosis, this family’s life changed forever, but the Whitrods are determined to find a cure for their daughter’s rare condition, while helping others diagnosed with genetic diseases. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

ittle Finn Whitrod sits at the table, playing cards with his mum Golden and dad Chris, while his cute-as-a-button younger sister Tallulah Moon bounces on her mum’s knee, her cute, dimpled smile and sparkling blue eyes lighting up the room when I meet them at their Coolum home. On first impressions, they are just like any other family, laughing and enjoying precious time together. But there is much more to the Whitrods’ story than meets the eye. What they have been through during the past 18 months has been a roller coaster of events that began with a diagnosis that changed their lives forever. Originally from Darwin, the intrepid family were living the dream, enjoying a year’s sabbatical in Nicaragua when Tallulah, then just 14 months old and starting to walk and talk, began to regress and revert back to crawling, her onceconfident steps replaced by frustration and lack of control, her playful babbling silenced. “She had just started to walk and loved chasing Finn around and talking and

dancing; she was reaching all her milestones and then it just started to slow,” Ms Whitrod says. “She would crawl a little bit and then lie down and cry out and then crawl again. We thought it might have just been a virus at that stage.” Living in a remote area of a Third World country, at the height of the COVID pandemic, the Whitrods travelled three hours to the capital city of Managua where a neurologist confirmed they needed to return to Australia urgently to seek medical attention for Tallulah. “This neurologist assessed her and within a couple of minutes he said, ‘you need an MRI and a nerve conduction study’. We didn’t even know what that was. They just said there was something wrong,” Ms Whitrod says. “The MRI didn’t show anything like a tumour, so it gave us false hope that it was a virus and we were telling ourselves we were going to go home and sort it out and get back to normal. But there was also this terrible feeling we were hiding; we just didn’t know what was ahead and we were incredibly scared and panicked.”

Despite the hurdles they faced due to COVID-19 restrictions, within a few days of meeting the neurologist the Whitrods made a mad dash to get back on home soil. “It all escalated so quickly,” Mr Whitrod says. “By a stroke of luck, we were able to charter a small aircraft out of the otherwise locked-down country and fly to Costa Rica.

“The wonderful Whitrods are very positive people and they are not going to let this destroy them” “We then boarded a mercy flight to the USA and then home to Australia.” After myriad tests by a team of specialists at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, which were inconclusive, Tallulah had the opportunity to take part in a gene mapping study that eventually diagnosed her with hereditary spastic paraplegia

type 56 or SPG56, a rare and debilitating neurodegenerative disease. “You can’t imagine that something this big is going to happen to you; you already have your child’s life mapped out in your head, even though you pretend you don’t,” Ms Whitrod says. “You just think your kids are going to grow up, maybe go to university, fall in love. The words ‘progressive disease’ and ‘end of life’ don’t come into your story. Even when something like this happens you think you are going to be able to fix it.” The diagnosis was bittersweet. While the couple was thankful to finally have an answer, there was little known about this incredibly rare disease or what the future held for their precious daughter. “We were waiting for them to say, ‘there is a treatment; this is what we are going to do’, but they just apologetically said it is a progressive disease, and it’s so rare they didn’t have much information,” Ms Whitrod says. “There are many types of SPG, yet unbelievably, Tallulah is the only person in Australia with Type 56.” After stumbling through the emotions myweeklypreview.com.au

Tallulah in her wheelchair “The minimum symptoms for the diagnosis of SPG are progressive onset of lower limb weakness, spasticity and paralysis,” Professor Mackay-Sim says. “However, there can be other symptoms such as digestive and developmental problems with early onset. “There are over 80 separate mutations for this condition and SPG56 is one of the rarest. In fact, there are only about 10 families in the world identified with this mutation. “In Tallulah’s case, it’s a childhood onset disease, which has very serious consequences and is most destructive to the family. However, the wonderful Whitrods are very positive people and they are not going to let this destroy them, that’s for sure,” he says. The most common mutation is SPG4, which generally presents in adulthood and affects around 40 per cent of sufferers. “We have previous experience with SPG4 and we are already doing clinical trials on a treatment, which could become a treatment for SPG56,” Professor

Mackay-Sim says. “We have taken stem cells from these patients, looked at what is biologically wrong with them and then found drugs that reverse the effects of the condition. “We will do the same with Tallulah. We are in the process of getting approval to remove cells from her to find out how they differ from healthy control cells. Then we will look at a library of chemicals and compounds that are already approved to try and treat the symptoms.” The research could also lead to a cure using new gene therapy technology. “If you can put in a corrected copy of a gene and get it into the cells permanently then you have a genetic correction for that disease,” Professor Mackay-Sim says. “Gene therapy technology is changing all the time and there is quite a lot of hope one can apply this to a lot of genetic diseases like Tallulah’s. “It’s all science. We can’t predict what the outcome will be and it’s partly to do with funding. The more funding we get, the more approaches we can start to look at.”

Inspired and driven by other families who were raising funds for rare genetic diseases, in August this year, the Whitrods established a not-for profit charitable foundation called Genetic Cures for Kids. The charity is aimed at the discovery of drug treatments and gene therapy research to help sufferers of rare and genetic diseases and its first mission is ‘Our Moon’s Mission: to cure SPG56’. The couple aims to raise $1.5 million over the next 18 months to propel the research forward and complete the mission they started. “We’ve spent so much time working out how we can fundraise and we realise, without the big companies behind us, we need the community’s help,” Mr Whitrod says. “We’ve asked all our friends and family to join us by running mini fundraisers on Facebook to help our charity and it’s really taken off in the most epic way. We call these amazing people who start Facebook fundraisers #TallulahsArmy.” The response so far has been incredible, with $205,000 raised since the charity was launched and the Facebook fundraiser campaign took flight. “It’s been absolutely flooring yet so uplifting and encouraging,” Ms Whitrod says. “The love and drive of the community behind and with us definitely gives us stamina to keep going.” And like most life-changing experiences, their journey so far has given them a whole new perspective on life. “Suddenly, we have this massive purpose that guides us,” Mr Whitrod says. “We don’t have the time to worry about the little things or what we can’t control. We do a better job of letting things go that are not important. “It’s trimmed the fat off what life used to look like for us. We tend to really circle back with the kids, knowing our time is precious and hoping to God we are going to have each other for a long time ahead.”

that come with being the parents of a child with a rare disease, the couple was determined to learn as much as possible and meet other families living with a similar diagnosis. “We connected with other families and through them, we started hearing various stories about all the very real, but expensive, treatments out there,” Ms Whitrod says. “There was genetic research leading to gene therapies for recessive genetic diseases that were successful; suddenly there was hope. “This hope and our research led us to the Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Foundation in Sydney. But even this amazing and very noble foundation rely on very limited funding from donors, and unfortunately, because Tallulah’s case is so rare, she is a long way down the research list.” The Whitrods decided to approach the foundation with a donation of $500,000 to kick-start funding for research by scientists at Griffith University and The University of Queensland. “There was no question in our mind we were making the right decision. It was a huge investment, but we’d learned what these researchers were already achieving with other rare diseases. They just needed funding to work on ours. In the end, investing in this was such a simple decision for our hearts and minds,” Ms Whitrod says. “We sold our property in Darwin and moved to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to the research and the excellent therapists here who help Tallulah keep the disease at bay. That’s when things really started moving and we started to investigate who else could add value to this research body.” Their research also led them to the work of Professor Alan Mackay-Sim. The Sunshine Coast resident was named Australian of the Year in 2017 for his research and treatment of spinal cord injury and rare genetic diseases. He and his team at Griffith Institute of Drug Discovery are world leaders in researching treatments for hereditary spastic paraplegia.

iving on the Sunshine Coast means we have our fair share of weather – good and bad – and this summer it is important all residents ensure that if wild weather unleashes, you have your emergency kit ready. With its coastal climate, the region is no stranger to severe storms and with the declaration of La Niña, we can expect a wetter-than-usual summer period, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). BOM’s summer outlook shows eastern Australia, including the Sunshine Coast, is likely to be wetter than average, with an increased risk of tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall and widespread flooding. Head of the BOM’s operational climate services, Dr Andrew Watkins, says several climate drivers are likely to create continuing wet conditions for parts of eastern Australia this summer. “La Niña describes a pattern of ocean temperatures that sees warmer waters in the western Pacific, which in turn drives increased atmospheric moisture and rainfall, including heavy rainfall, over Australia,” Dr Watkins says. “This pattern is likely to continue through until at least the end of January.” Dr Watkins says across the region we are looking at average to wetter-thanaverage conditions, particularly in the eastern half of the state. “The eastern half of the state has odds of around 60 to 75 per cent of seeing above-average rainfall. We are looking wetter the closer you get to the coast,” he says. “We will see warmer-than-average days and we are also likely to see warmer-than-average nights as we have a bit more cloud cover and a bit more humidity that is going to trap that heat in for southeast Queensland.” Temperatures will also increase – across the Sunshine Coast we will also have a 60 to 75 per cent chance of exceeding the median maximum.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR EMERGENCY KIT: According to BOM data, in 2021 Sunshine Coast Airport recorded average temperatures of 28.3 degrees in January and 28.5 degrees in February while Nambour reported 28.1 and 29 degrees respectively across the two months. In terms of bushfires, the bureau says the risk may not be as high this summer as in some years, but bushfires happen every summer in Australia and even short periods of hot and windy weather will raise the fire risk. Sunshine Coast local disaster management chair, Mayor Mark Jamieson, says to be prepared for potential severe weather, an emergency kit is needed in every household. “It should contain essential items to ensure your household can cope with being isolated for at least three days,” Mayor Jamieson says. “It’s also good practise to identify the safest room in the house to shelter during a storm and a safe place to evacuate to should a storm surge or flood threaten your home. “Be sure you know how to safely turn off your power, water and gas. “Throughout the year, you should also make sure your property is well maintained to minimise any damage storms can cause and ensure your insurance is up-to-date.” Mayor Jamieson says planning for your pet is also vital and he encourages pet owners to ensure their registration and tags are current and they have stocks of pet food, water and medicine. Households and businesses should also check to see if they require a generator.

First aid kit; important documents and contacts in hard copy and on a USB; torch, radio and batteries; essential toiletries and medications; Non-perishable food items for three days and a can opener; water for three days – pack a minimum of 10 litres of drinking water per person; phone, charger and battery pack; hand sanitiser; sturdy gloves to help prevent injury and infection when handling debris; tissues and wipes; face masks for each household member.

Thunderstorms are classified by the BOM as storms that are likely to produce large hail measuring more than two centimetres in diameter; wind speeds of more than 90 kilometres an hour, and heavy rainfall conducive to flash flooding. A severe storm warning will be issued by the BOM only for storms that are likely to produce all three elements. The wet season usually starts on the Sunshine Coast with thunderstorms in November. Cyclones can occur from December to April. Rain on the Sunshine Coast is usually confined to the wet season. However, flooding can occur any time of year. There are three thunderstorm types: the single-cell, the multicell and the supercell. Supercells account for most of the serious thunderstorm events we experience. It is characterised by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft. • Ensure your car has a full tank of fuel. • Turn off and unplug electrical items and turn off power, water and gas if instructed. • Ensure mobile phone batteries are fully charged. • Stay indoors as the storm approaches and ensure pets/farm animals are secured safely under shelter. • Store your important documents, medical prescriptions and valuables in a waterproof container in a secure location like your car boot. • Ensure every household member knows about warnings and advice.

CHARITY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Dressed for artistic success Two creatives are working on a sustainable arts project they hope will lead to collaborations with more local artists. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ast winter, Shaye Hardisty made a yellow woollen coat for her friend Ketakii Jewson-Brown out of a recycled blanket. When Ms Jewson-Brown remarked it was like a “sunshine coat”, it was a lightbulb moment for the hinterland artists. They submitted an application to the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation and won a $1000 GIFTED grant for a project that will see the design and construction of seven to 10 coats that share visual stories of our unique experiences living on the Sunshine Coast. Ms Hardisty is a sewing artist from Mapleton whose popular Instagram page Little House Seamstress showcases her cute and quirky creations. A self-taught seamstress, she began sewing 10 years ago and makes clothes for her family and friends from recycled and sustainable fabrics. She also teaches sewing workshops and models her designs, which Ms Jewson-Brown photographs for the page. The two share a love for the colour pink and all things fashionable yet sustainable, and began to collaborate artistically when Ms Hardisty suggested Ms Jewson-Brown do her photography in exchange for handmade clothes. Their shared passion for interesting fabric led the two to visit Japan in 2009 on a two-week fabric buying tour. They returned with 37 kilos of fabric. They’ve also collaborated on an Instagram page called Mill Street Fashion Walk, which celebrates the street style of people in Nambour and all roads have led to the Sunshine Coat project. “We’d been looking for a way to collaborate in our work more in this coming year and with the Sunshine Coat, it started falling into place,” Ms Hardisty says. “We’re going to create seven to 10 coats and Ketakii is going to make a photographic essay of that process of designing and creating the coats and all the people we bring into the process. “Our intention is to collaborate with six other artists. We work out of the Makers Space in Nambour, a council-

It focuses on Nambour and bringing together some community culture and art.” Ms Hardisty says their Sunshine Coat project is still in its early stages and she needs to create a prototype of the coat to work off. “We’ll definitely get some fabric printed for one of the coats and we’ll be using Ketakii’s amazing photography. We’re planning on printing through a company in Melbourne called Next State, which have some great ethical options. “The fabric we’re going to use is called eco-drill and I think it’s 70 per cent recycled and 30 per cent organic cotton. It’s a really good sustainable base. Our ultimate goal is for all of the fabric to be that standard or second-hand from the Nambour area. “One consideration is why a coat for the Sunshine Coast? We only have a couple of weeks a year to wear a coat. Coats are a big garment but they’re not gendered and can be very inclusive and they don’t need to be made out of wool. “I really feel the coats need to be usable. I like the idea of functional art and I really want them to be worn and loved.” Ms Jewson-Brown, a mother of two from Witta, says life for her is about creative contentment and inspiration. Collaborating on new art projects is her idea of fun and doing it with her bestie, Ms Hardisty, is even better. “I would love to see us get lots of members of the community involved in telling us little pieces of their story and other creatives getting involved and adding to our vision of what the Sunshine Coat is,” she says.

“I’ll be helping to liaise with artists and getting photographic documentation, which will be exhibited alongside the coats. I’ll also add photos to the fabric printing. “We’ll be exhibiting the coats but in the long run, we’d probably auction them off and do something for charity. But we’d like to build on this. “It can start as a Nambour-based project then expand Sunshine Coast-wide and see where it can go. It’s a really good starting point for stories about place, identity, fashion and the fabric of a community and how we can showcase that; how we can weave it all together – the threads of the story. From Nambour to New York… why not? From little things, big things grow and it feels really doable and not a pipe dream.” “I’m really excited to have the finished coats exhibited with the photography,” Ms Hardisty says. “Ketakii will be documenting what goes into making clothing – people don’t realise all those little pieces that go together. “By winning the GIFTED award, it’s that thing of ‘keep going’,” Ms JewsonBrown adds. “You can add kindling to the fire. It’s the same with our friendship and collaboration with Shaye – we keep bouncing off each other. We’re not in it alone and knowing we can pull people in from the wider community, there’s fresh air in there.”

A Caloundra-based organisation that supports families facing financial hardship is experiencing increased calls for help, but it needs $4 million in donations to continue meeting demands. In 2021, Gateway Care experienced a staggering 45 per cent increase in recipients seeking low-cost groceries. Director Tom Lew says transactions of its daily activities jumped between May and November. “Food rescue now sits at around one million kilograms and saw an approximate 20 per cent increase in the last six months.” This rise in demand means Gateway is planning to expand its facility. “We aim to help as many people as we can but our facility is at capacity,” Mr Lew says. “While we are helping more people, we know that we could be helping even more and sadly many are simply going without. “Plans to increase our facilities were already in motion, but the significant rise in demand in such a short amount of time means we’ve already outgrown those plans. “So we’re looking at all options now. We need to more than double our footprint, but this requires a significant investment beyond our capabilities.” He estimates the organisation needs around $4 million to expand and meet demands and is calling on philanthropists and the local community to help. “To date, Gateway Care has been predominantly self-funded, growing our operations to a level where we are now considered one of the largest food relief and food support outlets on the Sunshine Coast. We need more funds and we need them urgently.” Established in 2003, Gateway’s Food Centre community hub refreshment area provides low-cost meals to Gateway members, serving around 270 meals weekly and preparing more than 100 meals weekly free of charge for domestic violence groups. Mr Lew says Gateway’s mini supermarket stocks low-cost groceries for welfare recipients, families and those doing it tough. “The grocery line fundamentally funds our programs, including job-ready work programs for marginalised people, youth support programs and Work for the Dole participants,” Mr Lew says. Scrubbing up for success After a win at the 2021 Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards, Sally Doran reflects on her career success. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

here is a little-known fact about one of the region’s most successful women in business that helped set the stage for her career. Before her role at Kunda Park-based Infectious Clothing Company, Sally Doran – named 2021’s Corporate Woman of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network (SCBWN) Awards – spent 20 years touring the world managing live entertainment, spiegeltents and clowns. “I’ve always had a keen interest in entertainment and I actually studied business and radio broadcasting after school,” Ms Doran says. “For the first

20 years of my career I was working in live entertainment touring with bands as a production assistant and then worked as a theatrical producer in New York for several years.” Moving back to Australia in 2009, Ms Doran met her now-husband Pete, who at the time was an emergency nurse with a side business manufacturing scrubs. “When we had our first child it became wildly apparent that a career in theatre

wasn’t going to be. Pete had been running Infectious as a side business since 2001 and I had a business degree so it made sense to go in and do this together.” Today, Infectious Clothing Company is Australia’s largest online scrubs supply store. Ms Doran says the SCBWN award gave her an opportunity to reflect on her own successes. “I’m very good at touting the success of the business so it was really good to look at myself as an individual,” she says. “I enjoy lifting people up or mentoring them but to have someone see what you do as valuable and be nominated was just wonderful.” The mother of two says her success does come from ‘luck’, a lot of hard work and juggling the “work/life swing”. She says success also comes from being prepared to put in the hard yards and being aware that not everything goes to plan. “I’m lucky I have great children, a great husband, great family, but I’m not lucky to be a successful business woman or to have the life that I lead. It’s women at my stage of life that have the knowledge and the wisdom but we’ve got a whole lot on our

plates. We’ve got young children, ageing parents – there are so many moving parts. “I’ve worked really hard to get to where I am today and I’ve had a lot of failures and I take a lot of risks. None of that’s luck. It’s being prepared to fall flat on you face and then show back up the next day and be prepared to have the hard conversations and do the hard work.” Ms Doran’s advice to women in business is to allow time for critical thinking and future proofing. “You’ve got to make time to be planning ahead and thinking of what you need to do to future proof your business to ensure you grow.” SCBWN president Min Swan says the network’s awards are a wonderful way to highlight the incredible work of women in the region. “Being nominated in the [award] is about more than the business you are in,” she says. “It is about all of who you are. It is about how you find balance in life, about how you contribute to the community and about what you put into your business.”

Council to trial new technique to nourish our beaches Investigations are underway to trial a method of sand nourishment at Maroochydore Beach, to protect the area from the effects of severe weather.

73KM COASTAL PATHWAY READY FOR THE FAMILY TO EXPLORE

new technique, called nearshore nourishment - never before used on the Sunshine Coast - will commence soon, involvingimporting sand from outside the region and placing it in the water, about 300 metres off the beach at Maroochydore. Waves, currents and tides will then deposit the sand onto the beaches, providing an additional buffer to future storms and coastal erosion. Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox says the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy guided Council’s work to manage our region’s beaches from the risk of future coastal erosion. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes over several years to inform the long-term management of the coastline. Coastal data captured through wave buoys, beach surveys, hydrographic

surveys, ecological monitoring and wind data are being used to shape the project. Trialling the new technique will assist Council to make evidence-based decisions about the future management of the coastline. A dredge will collect sand from the Spitfire Channel in Moreton Bay and transport it to Maroochydore Beach for release, potentially using two methods. One method may include dropping the sand from the bottom of the barge and the other will spray the sand in a rainbow shape into the water. The results of both methods will be compared. Surf amenity will be a consideration throughout the trial. Cr Cox says although this technique has not been used on the Sunshine Coast, it is a well-established method and has proven successful for other government bodies on the Australian east coast.

The 73 kilometre spectacular coastal pathway runs from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north. Walk, jog, cycle, skate or scoot along the pathway while taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful coastline. Council has established a technical advisory group to act on behalf of the community and contribute to the project. Members include councillors, Queensland government representatives, Sunshine Coast Council, Surf Lifesaving Queensland, Queensland Police Service and expert engineering consultants. All necessary environmental approvals are being progressed for the trial to be conducted. Council will keep the community updated as investigations continue. Community engagement opportunities are set to roll out either later this year or early in 2022 as the project details are finalised. 100 years of holidays Our most popular holiday destinations weren’t always those we know and love today. Going back a century, hinterland towns took precedence. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

s thousands of holidaymakers claim their patch of the Sunshine Coast for the summer holidays, let’s take a trip back almost a century to 1923. Rather than the Bruce Highway – which was more track than highway – becoming one long parking lot, holiday hordes arrived by train. Local roads were dirt or sand tracks and access to the beach settlements meant coordinating rail, horse and cart, bus, car, motorboat and even steamer. But this didn’t stop the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau waxing lyrical in its “tourist guide affording concise information and direction where brief of extended holidays may be spent” in 1923. Covering “mountain and seaside resorts from Noosa to the Tweed”, the picture it paints of the North Coast is in stark contrast to the Sunshine Coast we know today. For a start, the hinterland towns – Glass House Mountains, Cooroy, Tewantin,

Alexandra Headland in the 1920s when modesty on the beach was expected Nambour, Mapleton, Buderim, Palmwoods, Montville, Landsborough and even Bald Knob took precedence over the beaches. Riverfront locations were more popular, as swimming in the surf was still relatively new and somewhat risqué. Mooloolaba failed to make a mention in 1923, although there were local reports that “in the 1923 New Year, campers were making the most of the Mooloolaba facilities, and enjoyed favourable weather and good fishing.” A year later, Brisbane’s Daily Mail reported it as being one of the best seaside resorts in Queensland, “with ideal positions for campers”. The 1923 holiday suggestions start in the north at Lake Cootharaba, where “once visited, its charming aspect will cling to memory, so magnificent is the scenery”. Coolum was listed as being a walk away from Noosa: “Not far away is another beach, which has more thrilling acquaintance with gales, especially those which from the south-east. This beach, Coolum, may be reached by walking from

Noosa Beach round boulder-strewn Noosa Heads if it is proposed to follow the sealine or it may be interestingly be approached by a climb and descent of the wooded hills which hide it from view.” Maroochydore was listed as having “an extensive beach, close to a tea-tree reserve which is famous as a camp colony in summer and holiday-time. Accommodation less picnic-like in character, also is provided at Maroochydore by an excellent hotel and boarding house; also by a system of furnished cottages. “An almost constant charm of waters as they broaden out into a quiet lake-like sea at the mouth of a tidal river is the way in which they play a painter’s part by their reflection of the sky, by night and day. At Maroochydore such reflections make a fascinating study.” They still do. At Alexandra Headland, “where many building sites have lately been sold with a view to the formation of a holiday town”, there is “no finer view of beach, river, bay and mountains”.

“Already some pretty red-roofed houses have been built and the soil quickly responds to the cultivation of picturesque garden plots. “From the higher points of vantage some beautiful coastal scenes are noted – Point Cartwright and the entrance to the Mooloolah River forming a very fine picture indeed”. While its renown for picturesque garden plots has long since disappeared, so too has the favoured access to Alexandra Headland. Situated between the Buderim tram terminus and Maroochydore it was “best reached by rail to Palmwoods, thence tram to Buderim and thence by conveyance to the Headland.” Intending visitors to Caloundra would leave the railway at Landsborough, the first refreshment station, 51 miles from Brisbane. Here they were met by a mail motorcar and conveyed “through interesting palm scrub and forest country which continues for a considerable distance towards their destination.” Caloundra could also be reached by steamer and motor launch via Bribie “through the scenic Pumice Stone Channel”. The guide noted that “the area to which the designation North Coast more particularly applies is entered at Caboolture”. A century later, that’s just where the journey out of the city begins.

IRON ORE REVIEW – DIGGING THE DIRT China’s tighter economic regime and weak housing outlook will hit economic growth in 2022. We forecast gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 4.7 per cent, below Beijing’s approximate 5.5 per cent implied growth target. Our baseline position is that there is no significant loosening of monetary policy, nor any fiscal stimulus but a fiscal drag that reduces to -0.5 per cent of GDP in 2022 from -3.6 per cent in 2021. In addition, a change in China’s economic model from ‘high growth’ to ‘high-quality growth’ is likely to preserve restrictive regulations in the property sector and in industrial sectors with high energy and emissions intensity, specifically steel and cement production. Chinese property activity in the

second half of 2021 has been the weakest in over a decade. Momentum is likely to improve but regulations are restrictive. New housing starts between August and October were down 21 per cent year-onyear (on a three-month moving average basis), sales volumes were down 19 per cent, and land sales were down 46 per cent. We expect targeted policy tweaks to mitigate systemic risks, but housing will no longer be a counter-cyclical policy tool. We believe relatively more restrictive housing industry rules can achieve dual aims, i.e. a managed slowdown in the property sector and decarbonisation by virtue of lower steel and cement demand. We expect a rebound in industrial production in the second quarter of 2022 after the Beijing Winter Olympics (February 4–20). Property activity should then improve across the duration of 2022 following minor policy and liquidity loosening in October 2021. We therefore forecast positive momentum for steel production, and steel and iron ore demand during calendar 2022 versus the third and fourth quarters of 2021. However, this improvement is off an exceptionally weak base. A decent bounce into the second quarter of 2022 is required to achieve our 950 million tonnes steel output estimate for the year. We forecast iron ore supply from the

major miners will increase by 20 million tonnes over 2022. Despite Brazilian major Vale reaching 370 million tonnes capacity by the end of 2022, its value-over-volume strategy means just ~10 million tonnes will be added next year. For the Australian miners in 2022, we forecast 330 million tonnes for Rio Tinto, 287 million tonnes for BHP and 182 million tonnes for Fortescue Metals, a combined rise of 11 million tonnes. Modestly higher supply from the majors will undermine price tension given lower year-on-year Chinese demand, and is likely to force marginal production out of the market.

The combination of weak Chinese demand and buoyant iron ore supply leads us to lower our iron ore price forecasts by 12 per cent in 2022 and 10 per cent in 2023 to US$92 per tonne and US$90 per tonne respectively. As most of us look forward to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, catching up with family and just relaxing, there are just as many families who do not know how they will keep their kids’ safe tonight or how they will provide food. Right now, there is a mum who needs to get her four kids out of a violent household and into safety. This same mum will need support to create a safety management plan and someone to help her navigate a system that she struggles to understand. At this moment there is also a child who is feeling worthless, misunderstood and who is filled with sadness and desperation. And too often there are vulnerable children on the Sunshine Coast who are hungry, not safe or who are homeless. Many don’t have the basic essentials for school and are withdrawn and isolated as a result. While most of us will not know how

y the time you read this it will be only 51 weeks to 2023. Wow, where has the time gone? What have I learned in 2021 and what have I failed to understand? I recently walked along the new walkway between Alex to Mooloolaba and while it isn’t finished, it looks to me like the council is doing a pretty good job giving access to the masses. So, I have learnt that sometimes naysayers can be wrong. A lot of folk were bleating 'disaster' when this was first tossed up, but it looks to me like they may have been wrong, depending of course on perspective. Mine is, it will allow a lot more people access – including people with disabilities – whereas others may just want to leave things as they were, catering for the few, which I am happy is a thing of the past. I have learned in 2021 that some Australians have decided all menial tasks should be done by international tourists on work visas and if they aren’t available, well that work simply doesn’t get done. How unAustralian is that? I have been reminded that people stress out at this time of year, trying to buy

presents that will impress and also trying to make the best of their vacation by arguing continually about what and how much fun they are trying to have. I have failed to understand the COVID rules. This rotten thing is not going away any time soon. I understand that, but the minefield of different rules is totally confusing and has certainly made working in hospitality a challenge. Sure, 40 years ago I wanted to be a police officer, but luckily for all concerned, failed the medical. But four decades on, politicians want me to do the coppers' job for them. In fact, I don’t even believe it’s the job of police; they have far too much other stuff to do. Politicians could maybe give a hand, rather than just get on TV and say the police will handle it. Maybe they could set up information tents in front of licensed premises explaining the rules. Hopefully one day, COVID will be remembered as a shot over the bow reminding us how precious life is, and how picking fruit or washing dishes is just as important as any other job. Let’s hope at the very least for a happy new year for 2023.

A SHOT OF KINDNESS Sami Muirhead is impressed by a Maleny cafe's brilliant approach to the new vaccination rules – a win-win solution that caters to everyone.

OVID brings more than sickness. How many friends do you know who are simply tired from nearly two years of worry and trying to guess what the pandemic will bring next? We have all been robbed of memories. I am still sad, as I missed so many ‘firsts’ for my son when he started Prep last year. My dad’s funeral was limited to a handful of guests due to strict regulations. This was hard. To love each other is what makes us human and these memories of interactions with friends and family are what fuel us and give us purpose. It is time to make memories again. I was deeply impressed with a Facebook post I read from the most enchanting cafe in the main street of Maleny, called Shotgun Espresso, discussing the “tricky and sticky times” we are all going through in relation to health directives from the government concerning being double vaccinated. The owners of Shotgun Expresso wrote: “Last year we had the opportunity to take a lease next to our little cafe and expand. Knowing the world had changed and we had to bear this in mind moving forward, we created ‘Little Shotgun’ in the original venue and Shotgun on the new side. We set ourselves up to move with expected

lockdowns to be able to switch to takeaway more easily and to run as two separate businesses if needed.” Genius thinking, people! The owners continue: “...those who wish to show us their certificate are able to enter the store and take a seat in the Shotgun side and directly out the front. Those who do not wish to show us a certificate can purchase takeaways at the door from the ‘Little Shotgun’ side without entering and can be seated directly out the front on this side.” Already impressed, it is the next part I love best and acts as a reminder to us all to be kind and patient to each other during this mess. “ANYONE choosing to be our guest going forward must first agree to something far more important first: To be kind to each other. Be kind to our very hard-working staff. This is next-level stuff, and we are already tired from the last two years. No one is forcing people to enter our store, so if the above requests can’t be met, please don’t enter.” We should not be divided on this issue. My sort of cafe is just this one: soul-starting coffee, lime and lemongrass cake that will make you cry with happiness, served with a huge slab of cream and kindness on the side.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SKIN CANCERS It’s never too late to reduce sun damage and your skin cancer risk. Although many people believe that most sun damage occurs when they are young, the majority of sun exposure occurs after the age of 30, according to the US National Cancer Institute. Therefore, it’s never too late to make a difference in your skin health. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australia, with about four out of five new cancers diagnosed being skin cancers. In Australia, the vast majority of these are caused by exposure to the sun, while some are the result of genetic factors. In most cases, skin

cancer occurs as a result of ultraviolet radiation causing abnormal growth of skin cells. Each time we are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, the damage to our skin cells accumulates, in many cases leading to a skin cancer. Here’s what Dr Christina Sander of Central Dermatology Clinic recommends for you to reduce your skin cancer risk: Daily sun protection: Wear sun-protective clothing, such as a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, whenever possible. Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day to all exposed areas. Studies conducted in Queensland have confirmed that strict sun protection reduces your skin cancer risk over time by about 50 per cent! Regular skin checks with early detection: The two key components in Australia’s fight against skin cancer are prevention and early detection. Prevention is mainly concerned with protecting your skin from the sun. But in an environment like Australia’s, where levels of UV radiation are at harmful levels on a regular basis, there is no way to protect your skin 100 per cent of the time, which is why it’s important to

While it is effective and fast, it is not suitable for all lesions and in many cases can cause loss of pigmentation on the skin. It generally results in blistering and lifting of the skin cancer or abnormal cells allowing new, healthy skin to heal in its place. Prescription cream treatments to reduce sun spots There are several prescription creams or gels that your doctor can prescribe to reduce solar keratoses and sun damage. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) This specialised treatment is very effective for some early skin lesions such as skin cancers and sunspots or solar keratoses, which are pre-cancerous spots. It is a very effective treatment,

with a very high cure rate and an excellent cosmetic outcome when used appropriately, particularly around areas such as the face or scalp. This treatment involves preparing the skin and the lesion or lesions to be treated, followed by application of a light-sensitive cream to the lesion. After a specified incubation time, the area of skin is then exposed to a special red light that activates the cream applied previously, enabling it to destroy the abnormal cells in the lesion. Your dermatologist or skin specialist will be able to advise you whether this type of treatment is appropriate for you. Laser and broad band light (BBL) treatments Various forms of ablative laser (CO2 and ErbYAG) and BBL treatments deliver focused light therapy to target sun damage and other signs of ageing to provide a more rejuvenated and youthful appearance. Dr Sander says, “BBL treatment has also been shown to change the expression of genes associated with ageing, tumour suppression and longevity, resulting in an increased lifespan of skin cells.” With regular treatments, your skin will look smoother and younger, and your risk of skin cancers will be reduced.

The future of property My Weekly Preview asked seven leading real estate agents to provide their predictions on the Sunshine Coast residential market in 2022. They share thoughts on the future of rentals, what investors are likely to do, and how they think the property market will respond to possible increases in interest rates. Compiled by: Tracey Johnstone.

ROSS CATTLE Define Property We will see significant growth in 2022. There will be some months that will spike and have large volumes of sales. The months around the anticipated election may be softer in numbers but I see the Coast market as bullet-proof. We still don’t have enough homes being built to match growth, building supply has slowed, building times and materials have soared – this puts more pressure on the value of existing homes and there will be those who will want to capitalise on the profits. I still strongly believe there are great opportunities for buyers. My long-term view is prices today are much lower than they will be in 2026/27. I’d rather be buying today than in five years. The biggest challenges are getting potential sellers to understand the differences between reaching the market level, under-selling and not over-pricing expectations. The rental market will still be a low vacancy year. Investors will sleep well in 2022 and there will be more of them. I don’t see any issues with interest rate rises and it’s purely a topic the media loves because it gets attention.

I feel confident that with the borders opening and the number of buyers we are talking to on daily basis who are still getting themselves into a position to follow family to the Coast or relocate here from southern states over the next 36 months, that the Coast is still set for the similar demand we have seen and therefore continued growth. No one has a crystal ball obviously, but just looking at the buyer demand and stock shortage that we have at the moment, I don’t see the market slowing any time soon. We have seen phenomenal growth in our much-loved pockets of Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Maroochy beachside, and really right across the Coast. The underlying factor is the majority of buyers we are dealing with are moving here for lifestyle. With that in mind we still hope that the community and council preserve what we all love about the Coast and why we choose to live in this beautiful place we call home.

JASON BURNS First National Riverside With the way we’ve finished 2021 and the changes in the market with the number of buyers through open homes, registered auction bidders, multiple offers from buyers on private treaty sales, and just general buyer enquiry from local and interstate, I see no signs of the market slowing down in 2022. Due to the surge in people moving to the Coast, there’s no doubt homes priced fairly will be leased in a very quick time frame. There is an under-supply of quality property to keep up with the demand in the market on the Coast and it won’t be difficult to find tenants to fill properties if they do become vacant. There have been more owneroccupiers, but investors are definitely around. Some are taking money out of the stock market to buy into bricks and mortar. I believe investors are likely to continue investing in property this year. With the population growth the Coast has experienced in 2021 and that carrying into 2022 and beyond, I think that as the Coast is such a desirable location, if there was actually to be a small [rate] increase, it shouldn’t affect our local market much at all.

ANDREW GARLAND Ray White Caloundra In the Caloundra area I believe 2022 will initially start where 2021 ended with strong buyer interest across all market segments. Media reports indicate interest rate rises are inevitable in the near term. Our market will hold up well against the early phases of these increases as the current market strength is from people choosing to live in the area for lifestyle reasons. These buyers will still need a place to live when interest rates rise. The rental market will remain tight. It’s also driven by longer term investors exiting as they take advantage of increased values and sell into the high prices. This has led to more pressure on the rental supply. Investors have returned in the last six months, but they have been a small minority and their enthusiasm could be tempered if interest rates rise quickly. I see the trend of investors selling into the market strength continuing, particularly if interest rates increase. For buyers who are unable to get into the market, I see increasing interest rates bringing more properties to the market either because of mortgage stress or investors taking advantage of the strong market. I will only be concerned if rates rise rapidly, sending a shock through the market.

JESS LUTHJE Maleny Realty Last year was busy in the hinterland to say the least. Even with New South Wales and Victoria locked out of the market for the majority of the year, we saw steady growth in property values and were predominantly selling to Queenslanders. The listing volume has retracted to the lowest level I’ve ever seen in my 20-year career, which has kept prices going up gradually and reduced the number of days on market. My average days on market are five at the moment. There was a definite increase in super fund investor interest in our market due

With all the talk of people migrating from the southern states we haven’t actually seen the volume here. The vast majority of buyers have been southeast Queenslanders. Even though there has been a sprinkling of southern-state buyers throughout last year, I believe we will see the impact of them this year. I think they will be owner-occupiers because a lot of the [people who bought] last year are holding the property before moving up. Now I think we are going to have quite an influx of people wanting to move here because they have just had enough of the ongoing rules. I think they will come in droves and that will give us a second wave on the Coast of price strength in the next six months. The talk of interest rate rises will make some buyers hold back but they will be counteracted by this tidal wave of people moving here.

This has been great for buyer diversity in our area. I believe the hinterland market will continue to perform well. We’ll see limited stock come onto the market in 2022 due to sellers not wanting to leave an area where the global pandemic had a relatively low impact on lives. This will hold prices steady. Interest rate increases will have a relatively small impact on our market in the short term as the majority of buyers are cash.

MAL CAYLEY, Direct Collective From a macro perspective, there are likely to be some market headwinds over the next two to three years but that is almost irrelevant to the Coast. With the nature of the move here and the strength of the market and the economy, and the under-supply that exists, I believe that we will see the property market continue to increase for more than the next five years. The rate of increase is still likely to be high in the next 12 to 24 months per annum. It will still be double-digit growth for the next two years.
