IT’S AN ELF TAKEOVER! Those pesky elves all the way from the North Pole have been at it again, invading thousands of homes across the Sunshine Coast in a bid to spread the Christmas spirit. And, it’s been no different for the My Weekly Preview team who had an elf takeover (and some fake news!) to contend with. You can imagine our editor’s surprise when she settled in at her desk early Monday morning to discover the cheeky Elf on the Shelf had taken up the position of lead designer and produced this edition’s magazine cover. Once we ascertained that there are still plenty of candy canes to share around (not a worldwide shortage as claimed by My Weekly Elf Preview) calm was restored – and so was our cover!

The borders are open, visitors are streaming into the state and the retail sector is booming. All you have to do is look at our roads (please drive safely, and calmly everyone!) to see that our region is thriving for the festive period. Yes, the countdown is well and truly on with only nine more sleeps until Christmas Day. If, like me, you have left some of the shopping and planning until now, I wish you good-hearted luck in navigating the busy holiday period. On the plus side, it is a truly beautiful time of year to be out and about and enjoying the festivities. The region’s boutiques are overflowing with quality products, our restaurants and bars are filling, and our local grocers are delivering fresh, local produce. And, while we don’t yet know the full COVID-related outcome of our

Border reopens

early Christmas has come early for thousands of people flocking into Queensland after the border reopened four days earlier than expected. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair, with AAP.

unshine Coast tourism operators and accommodation providers have been given an early Christmas present with the Queensland borders opening up four days earlier than expected. Border restrictions have been eased with the state at 80 per cent double dose COVID-19 vaccination, and thousands of people from interstate are flowing in. A massive police operation was underway on Monday at the QueenslandNew South Wales border on the Gold Coast where thousands of vehicles are crossing. Up to 50,000 vehicles were expected to cross into Queensland on Monday alone. A huge flight sale has been launched by Virgin Australia, with fares available between the Sunshine Coast and Sydney for $65. The Queensland is Good to Go sale runs until midnight, December 17. Qantas and Jetstar expect to carry 10,000 passengers on flights to and from the state on Monday, with most of the day’s services fully booked.

Queensland tourism businesses are expecting their best summer season since the pandemic began after losing about $20 billion in revenue statewide since March 2020. This is the first time in months that travellers from the southern states who meet Queensland Health requirements will be able to enter the state without being subject to hotel or home quarantine restrictions. Emotions are likely to run high at Sunshine Coast Airport, as friends and families reunite – the first time in many months for some. A Sunshine Coast Airport spokesperson confirmed all Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia flights from Sydney and Melbourne on Monday were fully booked, and this equated to about 1100 seats. This is on top of the services already running to Cairns and Emerald with Alliance Airlines. With flights into Maroochy having a seat capacity of more than 1000 a day and with airlines expected to ramp up schedules, businesses reliant on tourism are likely to have a much merrier festive season than at first thought. The border reopening will bring a new era for Queensland. For the first time in 229

days people won’t need to quarantine on arrival, as long as they’re fully vaccinated and test negative. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said with more than 80 per cent of residents having had two jabs, it was safe to move on and reunite families and friends. “Queensland’s cautious approach had kept Queensland safe,” she told AAP. Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Daniel Gschwind has witnessed a surge in bookings since the reopening date was set. “We will live with COVID but on our terms. We have a lot of ground to make up. Tourism is a perishable good, you can’t store it then sell it later,” he said. “But we’re certainly hoping we’ll have a strong harvest for this summer season.” While authorities have concerns over community transmission of the virus, police are confident their operations and border patrols are sufficient to deal with an influx of travellers.

Skilled migrants and international students can now return to Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed on Monday that the two-week pause on Australia’s international reopening would end. This means travel bubbles with Japan and South Korea, pushed back because of concerns about the Omicron COVID-19 variant, have also opened. Mr Morrison said he looked forward to welcoming back some 20,000 Korean students who would ordinarily come to Australia to study. “The borders will be reopened both to Korea and to Japan, and for skilled migration and for students, as we conclude the pause that we announced several weeks ago,” he said. It comes as Australia brings forward booster shots by a month because of concerns about the Omicron variant. Adults can now get a third dose five months after their second shot as Moderna is approved to join Pfizer as a booster option. Health Minister Greg Hunt indicated the government would make further changes to its booster program if recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation. He was encouraged by evidence showing Omicron led to a milder illness despite being more transmissible. “That could turn out, as many international sources have indicated, to be a quietly positive development for the world,” Mr Hunt said. As of Monday, slightly more than 89 per cent of Australians aged 16 and older are fully vaccinated. About 93 per cent have received one dose while more than 670,000 people have had a booster shot. -AAP

How Christmas 2021 will look How will you be spending Christmas? If you’re like many people on the Sunshine Coast, you’ll be catching up with family and enjoying some freedoms we haven’t experienced for almost two years. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

uderim counsellor and author Kerrie Atherton put her Christmas tree up early this year and has gone “berserk” with decorations. Like many of us, COVID had put a dampener on her plans over the past couple of years. But with the Queensland border having reopened to those who are fully vaccinated and test negative to COVID, her son and his wife are coming up from Sydney, as are her brother-in-law and his family. It will be the first time they’ve all spent Christmas together for five years. “We do heaps of presents,” Mrs Atherton says. “We go nuts! My mum and dad were absolute Christmas fanatics. “My mum passed away 11 years ago in December, just before Christmas. My mum was a real present person so because of that, we go berserk with the presents. “I’ve got a big tree and I’m not really a crafty person so the baubles are all really random,” she says. “I put it up early this year because my granddaughters came for a sleepover, so we put the tree up together. I gave them early Christmas presents and we ate chocolates.” Mrs Atherton and her husband Martin moved to the Sunshine Coast when their son Josh and daughter Aleisha were young

and while Aleisha has stayed on the Coast, Josh moved to Sydney when he was 23. “Before COVID, we would see each other every six to eight weeks – we’re a very close family,” Mrs Atherton says. “He moved to Sydney about three-and-a-half years ago. I would always go down there or he would come up for a visit. I also have two brothers in Sydney and we’ve lost both our parents. Going to Sydney to see my son and brothers was always one of my happy things to do in life and one of my mental health-care strategies. I have really struggled since that has been taken away.” Mrs Atherton says this has been her most challenging year and as a counsellor, she has seen the decline in mental health in many of her clients. “Being an empath it has been especially hard, standing by and watching people suffer so much. I’ve had a lot more calls for counselling. Lifeline has had its highest ever recorded calls since they started. Over this last year, calls have doubled to all the help lines. “I think it’s the uncertainty and also the fact that last year, people had hopes they would come out of COVID a lot better than they had. Because financially, people have been so devastated. A lot of people just can’t recover financially. Domestic violence

Kerrie Atherton with son Josh during a visit to Sydney has gone up, people have been very hesitant to get out into the community, the COVID debate is dividing a lot of people and people have become more insular and less trusting of others.” But Mrs Atherton is determined to put the difficulties behind her this Christmas and celebrate. The author of two Stories of Hope books and organiser of Stories of Hope events has been in full planning mode for weeks. “We’re going to my daughter Aleisha’s house,” she days. “We’ll be spending

Christmas Day by the pool, having roast turkey and roast lamb on the barbecue, and ham. She makes a special raspberry nougat Christmas ice-cream and pavlova. “We’ll have Christmas Eve either here at our place or at the beach at Mooloolaba.” With her husband’s brother Grant, his wife and their two children, plus her son Josh and his wife Kalina, her daughter Aleisha and her husband and two daughters, plus Kerrie and Martin, it’s shaping up to be one big, happy family Christmas. myweeklypreview.com.au

Matt Stoeckel, Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Christmas bookings were more than 80 per cent at the end of November, according to Visit Sunshine Coast CEO, Matt Stoeckel. Under normal circumstances, our tourism operators would be fully booked by this time of year, but even with the Queensland government declaring the border would reopen on December 17 – then opening it

four days earlier than expected – some people are still taking a wait-and-seeapproach. “Some people are still yet to confirm their Christmas and New Year travel plans and we’re certainly doing a lot of work to help the situation,” Mr Stoeckel says. “We’re confident tourism numbers will increase the closer we get to Christmas. “People are coming from right across Australia,” he says. “A lot of interstate travellers are looking forward to returning to the Sunshine Coast because they’ve needed to keep postponing their holidays. I think for anyone in our southern markets it’s a no-brainer to come and enjoy our weather for their Christmas holidays.” Mr Stoeckel says Visit Sunshine Coast is watching the development of the new Omicron strain of COVID, but remains optimistic about the Sunshine Coast experiencing a busy Christmas tourism period. However, bookings for the post-Christmas and New Year period are down, which Mr Stoeckel says is due to

tourists being hesitant about booking too far in advance. “From mid-January, we have a huge amount of campaign activity to really push the drive market and interstate markets to the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “The campaign is called Immerse Yourself. For Real.” Mr Stoeckel says Visit Sunshine Coast is confident tourism on the Sunshine Coast will begin to pick up with rising vaccination rates, and this Christmas is just the beginning. “I think operators have done it tough; it’s been a big couple of years for them,” Mr Stoeckel says. “They’re looking for certainty and confidence and that’s what the road map provides them. They should feel optimistic, but one thing they shouldn’t feel is too complacent. We know the tourism landscape will change a lot in 2022 and we’ll have to adapt and take opportunities where we can get them. The New Year will bring challenges, but we’re confident in the region’s ability to continue to perform.”

Weather predictions The Bureau of Meteorology has declared a La Niña weather event is underway in the Pacific, bringing with it a relatively cool, damp and stormy summer for much of the north and east and that includes the Sunshine Coast. December to February rainfall is likely to be above median for parts of eastern Australia, with the highest chances for eastern Queensland. Christmas Day is expected to be cloudy and warm with possible storms.

Spending & business outlook

Australians are expected to spend more than $11 billion on Christmas presents this year, according to Australia’s largest market research company, Roy Morgan. Toys, jigsaw puzzles and board games top the list of the most popular gifts. Sleepwear, shoes, clothing and gift cards are also popular. According to research conducted by Roy Morgan and the Australian Retailers

Association (ARA), gift buyers are expected to spend an average of $726 each, with those in the 35 to 49 years age bracket the nation’s most generous age group. In good news for retailers, most Australians (79 per cent) say they’ll spend the same or more than they did last year. The ARA-Roy Morgan 2021 pre-Christmas Retail Sales predictions forecast that overall spending will come in at $58.8 billion, virtually unchanged on last year, but up 11.3 per cent on pre-pandemic conditions. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says Christmas shoppers are looking to reward themselves and their families after having endured the toughest two years in living memory for many of us. ARA CEO Paul Zahra believes there’s a lot of Christmas cheer in the spending figures, which is great news for small

businesses and discretionary retailers who have suffered through some of the longest lockdowns in the world this year. The Christmas trading period is critical as it’s the time when most discretionary retailers make up to two thirds of their profits for the year, according to Mr Zahra. “The past few months have been a uniquely challenging time for most retailers, in particular small businesses navigating extended state-imposed lockdowns and restrictions that have limited their ability to trade,” Mr Zahra says. “Despite this uncertainty, the good news is that consumer sentiment is upbeat for Christmas and retailers can look forward to healthy trading conditions over the busy festive season. “Greater freedoms in locked down parts of the country are on the horizon

and retailers can’t wait to have people back in their shops in the lead-up to Christmas.” From Monday December 13, Queensland’s border restrictions eased, following Queensland achieving 80 per cent of the eligible population now vaccinated. Those who have not been in a hotspot for 14 days prior to entry are permitted to enter Queensland by any means, including by road, as long as they are fully vaccinated. Those who have been in a declared hotpost in the previous 14 days may travel to Queensland provided they are fully vaccinated, have a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival into Queensland and agree to get a COVID-19 PCR test on day five following their arrival into Queensland.

very five hours, an Australian dies from melanoma. It’s a shocking and sobering statistic. Not only do we live in the skin cancer capital of the world, but the risk of getting skin cancer on the Sunshine Coast is also 55 per cent higher than the national average, so it makes sense to have a skin check at least once every 12 months, right? Well, it seems many of us are simply not getting the message, putting what could be a lifesaving check-up on the back burner until, sadly, it’s too late. On the flip side, if detected early enough, most skin cancers can be successfully treated, and thanks to recent advances in technology, it is now even

easier for doctors to detect the slightest changes in their patient’s skin. Like most people from my generation (let’s just say over 40), I have spent many a long Aussie summer obliviously baking in the sun, skin glistening with lashings of coconut oil, in the pursuit of a ‘healthy’ golden glow. Fast forward some 20 years (and many sunspots) later, it was with some trepidation that I recently attended my first skin check at the Birtinya Skin Cancer Centre.

Part of National Skin Cancer Centres, and with another location in Caloundra, the clinic aims to considerably reduce the waiting time for patients otherwise seeking treatment at a specialist practice or public hospital. It’s also home to a team of qualified specialists in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, including chief medical officer and leading Australian expert in primary care skin cancer medicine, Professor David Wilkinson. Before physically checking my skin,

my appointment with Professor Wilkinson begins with a few simple questions that determine my risk factor for developing a melanoma, such as my age, family history, previous skin cancers and hair and eye colour. I was surprised to discover that anything above a three per cent risk warrants further and more extensive testing. “The key thing is knowing your risk, and almost nobody does,” Professor Wilkinson says. “Melanoma is one of the most common cancers among young adults. Anyone who is white-skinned and living

If detected early, most skin cancers can be treated successfully and working here is at high risk in my view and everyone should have regular skin checks and be monitoring their own skin.” After stripping down to my underwear (a gown or blanket can be provided for your comfort), my skin is checked from head to toe, including the soles of my feet, by the highly trained eye of Professor Wilkinson. Using a hand-held microscope, which helps him see beneath the skin, he carefully assesses each lesion. Fortunately, apart from some sun damage and age spots, nothing sinister

was discovered during my check-up and after returning an overall low risk factor for melanoma, I breathed a sigh of relief when given the all-clear by Professor Wilkinson. However, despite my low risk, my check-up didn’t end here. Next, I discovered an exciting new tool being used to track patients’ skin changes and alert doctors to any new lesions or variations to existing ones. Total Body Photography works by using sophisticated software that automatically compares all follow-up photos with the baseline images, revealing even the most subtle skin changes for doctors to evaluate further. The process itself is fairly simple. Patients are asked to stand in front of a camera in their underwear, and a series of photos are taken while standing in various poses to ensure the entire body is captured. It’s a little like a game of Twister that challenges your co-ordination and balance at times, or maybe that’s just me! However, the process is all over in about 15 minutes and ensures your peace of mind for the future. Described by Professor Wilkinson as a “total game changer”, it has completely changed the way he practises. “If I have a photo and software that tells me ‘that’s new, start looking here’,

then I have a much higher chance of a melanoma being identified early,” he says. “The key thing is that there is nobody alive who can do a skin check and say with 100 per cent accuracy that a spot is new or interesting. Even if you see it, you don’t know it’s new, you can’t possibly. “There are around 40,000 melanomas diagnosed each year in Australia, so the earlier we find them the better. That is how you stop people dying from melanoma; that’s the power of this technology,” he says. So, should everyone have this procedure done or just those at high risk? “Almost everybody that I see has some

kind of elevated risks and will benefit from this technology,” Professor Wilkinson says. “The data shows us the number of melanomas being diagnosed is going up. Almost all of them are the very thin, in situ melanomas. We know now that this is how melanomas start. The days when you just could say we can just wait, when it’s bigger we can pick it, you can’t do that anymore. We know better now. “Recent research has shown there is no relationship between the diameter of a melanoma and it’s thickness – it’s the thickness that kills you. A very small melanoma is as likely to be as deep as a very wide melanoma.” Most importantly, Professor Wilkinson’s advice to everyone is to keep checking their skin and alert loved ones of any changes they notice to theirs. “Half of all melanomas are found by patients or their loved ones. It’s so important to stand in front of the mirror and really take note of anything that looks new or suspicious,” he says. “It can save your life.”

As Queensland prepares to open its borders, private businesses will be given the option of excluding unvaccinated patrons. WORDS: Fraser Barton, AAP

ueensland supermarkets, pharmacies and other essential businesses could have the ability to mandate vaccination and exclude unvaccinated people, according to the state’s small business minister. From tomorrow, anyone entering a cafe, restaurant, bar, club, pub, theatre, cinema, museum, library or sport stadium will need to be fully vaccinated under a statewide mandate. The mandate does not extend to essential services like grocery stores, but small business minister Di Farmer says all private businesses are allowed to opt in to the mandate. “The ability to mandate that staff and patrons be vaccinated is available to every business,” Ms Farmer says. “Any business is able to make that decision, and a lot of them are actually thinking about that very seriously. “[When Queensland opens up] you will need to be protected and businesses all over Queensland will be making that decision. “If a person decides not to be vaccinated, then those are the things that they will take into consideration.” While the state will allow private businesses to do as they please, the

Businesses given jab mandate Queensland small business minister Di Farmer Queensland Council for Civil Liberties (QCCL) says there must be a balance between people’s rights and the public interest. QCCL president Michael Pope says unvaccinated people need to be able to do essential shopping like buying food and medicine. “We say that the correct balance is if you have a mandate, it must provide an exception of people who are conscientious objectors,” he says. “And on top of that, you’ve got to deal with the fact that people have to be able to buy food and get access to things like pharmacies and those sort of things. “We accept that this is a serious emergency which requires responses in relation to civil liberties that in normal times we would not accept. “But we’ve always argued that those responses have to be necessary and proportionate.” Supermarket Woolworths says it will not require customers to be vaccinated to shop in its stores as its role is critical in providing all Australians with essential goods. “Our stores have remained open throughout the pandemic, with strong COVID-safe settings to uphold public health and ensure the continuity of essential supply to communities,” a Woolworths official says.

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR A BETTER FUTURE When a person living with a disability is given the tools to live an independent life, it can make a world of difference. That is the aim of STEPS Pathways College, based in Caloundra, which has been providing unique opportunities for young adults since 2017. STEPS Pathways College is the only boarding college for people living with a disability in Australia, and in 2022, 22 students will live on site. CEO Anne Nioa says STEPS relies on the community to ensure each student receives the best education opportunity possible. She says community donations can help cover the $25,000 shortfall left from NDIS funding each year. “Through your donations, our qualified staff will teach students how to cook for

themselves, clean up after themselves, shower and get dressed every morning. “They will also learn skills that will help them plan for the future, from writing resumes and learning how to gain employment, to learning how to rent and budget. The students get a sense of freedom and dignity that comes from moving out of home and becoming self-sufficient. “Parents gain a sense of relief knowing their children are safe and the community benefits from having an active member that can work and volunteer towards meaningful causes.” Sunshine Coast residents can also visit the onsite Cafe on George, with profits going directly back to supporting students at STEPS Pathways College

Code could save lives An innovation that allows first responders to access vital medical information has been hailed a potential life saver. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

he “difference between life and death” is how a small feature saving paramedics vital time when attending a patient in an emergency is being described. SafeMate gives first responders fast access to encrypted medical and personal information that can play a key role in helping paramedics to treat a patient effectively. Someone passionate about advocating for the cause is Maleny’s Leanne Clarke. After her mother collapsed at her house on two separate occasions, she found herself unable to help paramedics with important medical information. “My mum has passed out twice at my place, and the paramedic were quizzing

SafeMate give first responders access to critical medical information to help assess a patient during an emergency; Leanne Clarke (inset) me on what medication she was taking,” Ms Clarke says. “It was really stressful for me because there was Mum on the ground and [the paramedics] were firing all these questions at me and I just went blank.” After what happened to her mother, Ms Clarke began searching for something that provided first responders with the information they needed. She discovered SafeMate, a subscription-based company, which uses QR codes on a patient identification card, sticker or silicone bracelet. Generic information can be attached to a profile online, which is accessible to the general public, while more specific

medial information can be accessed only by paramedics thanks to a partnership with Queensland Ambulance Service. “This can be the difference between life or death, or full or partial recovery,” Ms Clarke says. “Anyone can scan and access the public information. It could say ‘call my husband – this is his number’, or ‘I am a diabetic’. “Then private information with specific information on medications and medical history is information only QAS needs to know. “For me it was a very simple process of uploading all Mum’s medical information, medications, allergies,

past operations and next-of-kin details into her SafeMate profile. “I can now rest assured that if something happened again to Mum, the paramedics could scan the card and all the information that they need is right there.” Ms Clarke, who now works as Queensland’s business development manager for SafeMate, says a QR sticker can be placed at the front door, meaning first responders can have the information they need before they are even inside with a patient. “We have paramedics give us feedback on how they find using SafeMate and the feedback we are receiving is wonderful. “They are saying it is saving between five and 10 minutes … which is the difference between life and death.” As part of her role, Ms Clarke collaborates with senior citizen groups, various medical organisations and NDIS providers to ensure clients know about the product.

Surfer is living the dream After a COVID-enforced break, Buderimborn surfer Dimity Stoyle is back doing what she loves, and she couldn’t be happier. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

unshine Coast pro surfer Dimity Stoyle is living the dream, travelling to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world to compete against the top female surfers and filling in her spare time working as a DJ. She recently returned to Australia from Hawaii, where she was competing in the last leg of the 2021 Challenger Series, the ultimate battleground for surfers who are hoping to qualify for next year’s elite-level Women’s Championship Tour. The Challenger Series is limited to the top 64 female surfers in the world, and Ms Stoyle also competed in California,

Portugal and France as part of the series. It was her first time competing at Haleiwa and going into the competition, she felt the powerful right-hand wave at Haleiwa suited her style. Unfortunately, she didn’t get the result she was hoping for. “I ended up finishing 17th place in the last event at Haleiwa and finished the year ranked 16th place overall in the 2021 WSL (World Surf League) Challenger Series

rankings. Only the top six qualify for the World Championship Tour for 2022. “I would have loved to have finished with a better result, but I’m happy I still had three amazing months competing after nearly two years of no contests.” Born and bred in Buderim, Ms Stoyle grew up surfing with her dad and caught her first wave at the age of four. She made it onto the world tour in 2014 and 2015 – which meant she was one of the world’s top 17 female surfers – and has stayed in the world’s top 25 over the past six years. “I was always obsessed and if you ask any of my school teachers, they’ll tell you I was going to be a pro surfer. I decided that in grade two. A lot of my friends in high school didn’t know what they wanted to be and I couldn’t understand it. I just knew I was going to be a surfer.” Ms Stoyle attended Immanuel Lutheran College and grew up with a dad and brother who surfed every weekend. “I caught my first wave at four at The Pass at Byron Bay,” she says. “I don’t actually remember it but we have a photo of it. My oldest memory of surfing is about five or six. I’d take my brother’s short board and try and paddle it myself and try and catch waves. “We used to go down to Byron a lot for weekends. Mum would pick us up early from school on a Friday and we’d

drive to Byron and stay in a little motel on the beach. We’d hang at the beach all weekend.” Ms Stoyle began competing at 12 and says she’s fortunate her parents were able to drive her to competitions on the Gold Coast once a month. “I’m really lucky Mum and Dad supported me,” she says. “During high school, I started to miss a fair bit of school. I was sponsored by Billabong; they recognised I had the talent to become a pro and they supported me. I started travelling, doing pro junior events all around Australia and a couple in New Zealand.” After Ms Stoyle graduated high school in 2008 she was off overseas, chasing her dreams in the world-qualifying series. She has been travelling for competitions and

surfing full-time ever since. “Our events were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID and then we spent nearly two years at home. Now finally, this year the WSL brought back the events for us.” Her Instagram page reveals photos of Ms Stoyle and fellow surfers enjoying a beer while overlooking stunning ocean vistas and it’s hard to imagine life could get any better for this 30-year-old. But it does. When she’s back in Australia, she bases herself on the Gold Coast and when she’s not surfing, she works as a DJ. “I still call the Sunshine Coast home and it’s always going to be home,” she says. “But the Gold Coast is my home too. The waves are so much better and they have one of the best surf set-ups in the world, with training facilities for the top surfers.

“Another reason I live on the Gold Coast is there’s lots of work down there for DJs. Most of my income has come from DJing over the last five years. “I started DJing pretty randomly because my brother did it,” she adds. “I realised it’s a really good way to earn money and not have to work nine to five, Monday to Friday. I surf and train Monday to Friday, then Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, I work as a DJ.” Ms Stoyle is back on the Gold Coast and will arrive on the Sunshine Coast a few days before Christmas to spend time with her family, before a new year of surfing, travelling and DJing begins. “I feel like life’s pretty good at the moment,” she says. “I’m in a really good place with surfing and DJing; it’s a really good lifestyle. “Surfing is like a hobby, but it’s also a career. It’s my job, but it’s also something that makes me so happy. I’m always excited to surf new waves, go on surf trips around the world. “We can travel and surf amazing places and there are whole communities that live and revolve around surfing. It’s definitely unique. I’ve been doing it for so long, but I appreciate it so much more now. When you’re young, you don’t really understand how lucky you are. Now, I definitely don’t take anything for granted.”

royalty set to rise A love for quality baking has transformed Country Chef from a small home-based bakery business in the 1950s to the nation’s biggest provider of an Aussie staple. Apple & caramel gingerbread tart Ingredients TART BASE 400g Britts organic spelt ginger cookies, blended to a fine crumb in the food processor 200g unsalted butter, slightly softened and cubed

2 cups Topwill organic coconut milk ¾ tsp salt 5½ tbsp cornflour 1¾ cups unsweetened almond milk 1½ tsp vanilla extract

APPLE PUREE 6 organic apples, peeled, cores removed and diced into cubes ¼ cup water

GARNISH Fresh organic cherries, strawberries, blackberries & blueberries Apple slices

FILLING 6½ tbsp Kunara organic coconut sugar

Method Make the tart base by combining the Ginger Cookie crumb and cubed butter in a large mixing bowl. Use your fingers to blend the cookie dough together.

Transfer the dough to a large tart pan and press it firmly to the sides and base of the pan in an even layer.

Place the tart pan in the freezer to firm up while you prepare the rest of the tart ingredients.

Add the apple puree, remaining coconut milk, almond milk and vanilla extract and continue to whisk until smooth. Place the saucepan back on the stove over a medium to high temperature and continuously stir with a whisk. When the mixture starts to thicken, reduce the heat to a low simmer and continuously stir until a thicker custard-like texture appears.

Place the apple puree ingredients into a small saucepan.

Remove your tart base from the freezer and pour the filling mixture into the tart base. Place back into the freezer overnight to set firmly.

Cover and cook over a low temperature for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender.

Remove the tart from the freezer 30 minutes before serving to allow it to defrost.

Remove from the stove and allow to cool for 10 minutes before blending with a hand blender or food processor. Set aside.

Keep the tart refrigerated for up to 3 days.

chef’s tip

To make the caramel filling, combine the coconut sugar, one cup of coconut milk and salt into a medium saucepan over a high temperature. Bring to a boil and once boiling reduce the heat down to a high simmer. Stirring occasionally, simmer the sugar and milk for a further 10 minutes or until it has darkened in colour. Remove from the heat and whisk in the cornflour until smooth.

ith Christmas around the corner, the community is being asked to ‘adopt a family’ and help fellow residents doing it tough this festive season. The Salvation Army is launching its Christmas Appeal on the Sunshine Coast, and this year the organisation is hoping to raise $3 million in Queensland. Caloundra Corps Auxiliary Lieutenant Karen Clark says after another year of social and economic difficulties, The Salvos anticipates the needs of Queenslanders at Christmas will reach a new peak. “We are in need of the Sunshine Coast community to dig deep and provide donations to The Salvation Army to ensure that we can support our local community in need this Christmas,” Ms Clark says. “Christmas is the busiest time of the

year for The Salvos, and we expect this year to be no different. “While Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for many, others doing it tough in our community find it an extremely difficult period for them personally. The increased isolation, financial stress and mental health impacts of COVID-19 this year will only exacerbate these issues. “The Salvos want to leave no one in need this Christmas, and we need the generosity of the public this year to once again partner with us in support of locals doing it really tough.” Last year during the Christmas period, The Salvation Army distributed more than 64,000 hampers, more than 26,000 gifts and toys, and $1.89 million worth of vouchers to those finding it difficult to make ends meet. The Salvos also provides more than

130,000 meals across the country, more than 66,000 beds for those needing a place to stay and support more than 10,000 families with accommodation during the festive season. “We don’t want anyone to go it alone this year. If you need food, gifts, financial support or are feeling lonely, please get in touch with us,” Ms Clark says. “We would also encourage the community to ring our office and adopt a family, so that we can provide a Christmas hamper of food and toys for Christmas Day.” Caloundra Salvos will be hosting several events from its site at 119 Sugar Bag Road, Little Mountain. This includes a Christmas carol service on December 19 at 5.30pm. Residents are also being encouraged to shop at Salvos Family Stores at Beerwah, Bli Bli, Caloundra, Maleny, Maroochydore, Coolum, Montville, Nambour and Warana, with funds raised being injected back into the community. CALLING FOR DONATIONS

For 12 years a Sunshine Coast health professional has been organising a troupe of elves to help deliver Christmas cheer. Denise Simmons is a nurse practitioner and co-ordinates donations from Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, neighbours and friends to create hampers to donate to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal. “When I started this, we did 15 hampers and it has just kept growing,” Ms Simmons says. “This year we are expecting to do between 40 and 50 hampers. “We do big 52-litre containers full of presents and food that have been donated and then a group of volunteers come to a big wrap and pack day.” The hampers are then given to the team at Nambour’s Salvation Army and distributed to local families in need. “The need is there and growing every year, we just want to create that awareness.” Ms Simmons is hoping people will mark next December in their calendars to consider donating to those in need during the festive season.

BREWERY WINS BIG AT NATIONAL AWARDS

A Sunshine Coast craft brewery is worth frothing over after coming home with a slab of awards. Moffat Beach Brewing Co was a standout at the 2021 Independent Brewers Association Awards – one of the largest craft beer competitions in Australia – taking the title of Queensland State Champion and Champion Independent Small/Medium Brewery for Australia. More than 180 independently owned breweries submitted almost 1400 beers for consideration for the awards. Moffat Beach was awarded Champion Session Beer for its flagship Moff’s Summer Ale, as well as Champion India Pale Ale (IPA) for the Trilogy Best Coast IPA. The brewery also collected gold medals for Moff’s Summer Ale, Trilogy Best Coast IPA and Shadow of The Moon Eclipse Strong Pale. Matt and Sharynne Wilson founded Moffat Beach Brewing Co in 2015, and are no strangers to winning awards, having claimed more than 70 medals and trophies over the past four years. As head brewer, Mr Wilson says he is humbled by the experience. “The one thing I’d like to say is I started brewing at home by myself. I’ve largely used competitions as a way to educate

PLAN AHEAD BEFORE YOUR NEXT NIGHT OUT With the silly season kicking off it is important the community plans ahead for nights out and ‘Wakes Up’ to drink driving the morning after. Sunshine Coast Police have seen an alarming increase in the number of young drink drivers and are asking the community to help better educate them. Before you drive the next morning, you need to consider how much you have had to drink and if there has been enough time for your body to process the alcohol. You should allow at least one hour for every standard drink consumed. As an example, six schooners of heavy beer equals 9.6 standard drinks – so if you had your last drink at midnight you may not be safe to drive until 10am the next day. A Sunshine Coast healthcare centre has marked half a century of providing mental health support to the community. Lutheran Services’ Graceville Centre began as Queensland’s first aftercare centre for psychiatric patients in 1971. The centre filled a gap for a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to mental health care and support. The Elizabeth Court hostel and Nambour Welfare Industries sheltered workshop – the origins of Graceville – initially housed and provided care for eight to 10 people. Today the centre has supported the lives of hundreds of people living with a cognitive, physical or psychiatric disability through its mental health support and group therapy programs, outreach services and supported accommodation.

NEW VISION FOR WOOMBYE After 136 years, Woombye’s main street has evolved from a staging depot during the gold rush to a much-loved township. Now, Sunshine Coast Council has revealed the final design of upgrades to the town’s main street. “Woombye derived its name from the local Aboriginal word ‘wombai’, which refers both to the black myrtle tree and the axe handle made from its wood, then it was called Middle Camp, then Cobb’s Camp in 1885 before becoming the town we know today,” division five councillor Winston Johnston says. “Since November 2020, council has been working with residents, businesses, community groups and visitors to bring their values and vision to life. The final concept design has been developed and expanded from community consultation, which highlighted strong support for an attractive town centre, improved pedestrian experience and parking, and sharing Woombye’s story through art.” As well as street trees, garden beds and a more pedestrian-friendly street, the design accommodates car parking close to the shops.

A life-saving device has been donated to a Sunshine Coast hall, and while it is hoped it will never need to be used, it can give patrons piece of mind that help is not far away. The Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific has donated a defibrillator to the CCSA Hall on Nutley Street in Caloundra, which has been providing services to local residents as a community-based charity since March 1973. “Rotary is very proud to donate this defibrillator so that the hall will have the latest equipment in its first aid capabilities,” Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific secretary Christine Craig says. “Rotary feels it is an important part of providing emergency care, particularly when the modern machines are much easier for lay people to use.” Hall president Mark McArdle has thanked the club for its generosity. “The hall provides a venue for many local community groups across a variety of interests and this year alone over 13,000 users have been through the hall. “It is a comfort to know a defibrillator is in our armoury. A defibrillator provides an opportunity to give lifesaving treatment and in cases it

DOG OWNERS NEED TO SHAPE UP

Jane Stephens is calling on Sunshine Coast dog owners to do better when it comes to cleaning up their doggy doo-doo in public places.

Ashley Robinson says Wurtulla has gone ballistic with people buying property – but they may not know what they're in for.

here is no love quite like the fuzzy-faced devotion of a dog. Whether one currently shares our day-to-day, or the echo of their four paws reverberates in our hearts, once you have shared your life with a pooch, you never see the world the same way again. There is something whole-hearted about a dog and their lust for life and family, and that lack of restraint makes it easier to be overt about loving them back. We love dogs, we need their companionship and presence, and they are a key member of so many Coast families. We are heading in the right direction: the number of pet-friendly cafes are growing and dogs are mostly allowed where people live (even if they rent). People are mostly stepping up in helping their canines learn to mind their manners in public. Of course, like toddlers, dogs sometimes forget themselves and go rogue, but those behaviour burps rarely have real consequence. The dog beaches and off-leash spaces feature increasing numbers of all kinds of dog. Always, I am struck by how we could learn a great deal from them about getting along with others, regardless of shape, size,

colour or background. But we need to continue what we started in dog-friendliness and inclusivity on the Sunshine Coast. And let’s expect more of dog owners. The revelation that a Sea Shepherdorganised clean-up of the dog beach at Mudjimba last month had elicited a staggering 25 kilograms of dog excrement was gag-worthy. What possibly made it more stunning was that the poo was bagged up, as if those who left the 180 bags had thought to do the right thing but only got the job half done. They scooped the steaming pile from the sand, but then what happened? That so many missed the mark means there is a hole in the system and perhaps the council should review its bin locations and reinforce its behavioural expectations. We do okay on the Sunshine Coast, except for a handful of militant anti-doggos out there. But they are few in number and we who love dogs can just feel a bit sorry that they don’t understand a dog’s worth. Love is always stronger than hate, and where dogs are in the mix, that affection comes wrapped in a goofy, happy package with a wiggly, fuzzy bow.

few weeks ago I wrote about how the property market has gone ballistic, which is great if you own something but not so good if you don’t. Down in my neck of the woods at Wurtulla, it has gone really mad and I wonder what the attraction is – the hospital, the beach, the wildlife or all of it? I do have a bit of a giggle when I hear of someone buying at Wurtulla paying a couple of million sight unseen over the phone. I wonder if they know what they are getting into. Sure the black cockatoos, the tawny frogmouths – all the wonderful bird life – are awesome; plus the one wallaby that resides at Wurtulla, but some of the other species are a touch dodgy. Like the idiot riding around on his two-stroke scooter at 4.30am. I wonder how that will go when you pay two million for a house. Back to the wildlife. The morning of scooter boy, I got up and took the dog for a walk, as I couldn’t sleep and sort of hoped I would run into scooter boy. So George and I were out there enjoying dawn unfolding, the birds chirping, the frogs bellowing after the rain and not a

scooter in sight, when all of a sudden we came across some folk wandering home from a night out. They pulled up and asked me had I seen a phone anywhere, as they were retracing their footsteps from the night before, looking for a lost mobile. I told them George and I would keep our eyes peeled and got a “thanks bro" as they walked off. About two kilometres later, I came across some things on a beach track and thought I was getting close to a lost phone, particularly when it was followed by a couple of empty bottles. Around the next corner there was the phone in the middle of the track. It was like they had walked out of their thongs drank the last dregs of whatever and dropped the phone. Eventually they rang me on it. We decided to meet at a park near where I first saw them. When George and I got there, they were having a nice rest under the swings and were ecstatic to be reunited with the Samsung. Pay two million for a house and you will get so much more. Wurtulla just keeps on giving.

he year 2022. It has a nice round ring to it and just rolls off your tongue, don’t you think? I hope this means we are all going to be doubling down on happiness. Vogue Australia says when it come to fashion, it will be the year of wearing zebra stripes on our clothing. Pantone says the colour of 2022 is periwinkle blue. I do not even know what this is, but it sounds like something you would stand on in the ocean and need medical attention as a result. For our family? I hope it is a year where we slow down and take in more simple moments in life. I am hankering for some country air, so it could signal a tree change. And as for things that may not be sticking around for the new year, can we talk names, please? Twenty-eight names are at risk of becoming obsolete in 2022, according to parenting website, BabyCentre. Is yours at risk? It is not good news if you are a Dwight, Duane, Daryl, Leslie, Norman, Maurice, or Hubert. And for the women, well, Glenda, Bertha, Pauline, Doreen and Gertrude are just some of the names on the extinction list. It is a shame really as I never met a Pauline I did not like. Every Pauline I ever met

(including Hanson) are women who just know how to get stuff done. When I was a kid, my mum owned a snack bar and a buxom blonde called Pauline worked there and would make me bubble and squeak on the huge stove. It made me love her for my entire life. And another new survey shows Olivia,

CHRISTMAS IS THE TIME TO BE JOYFUL Repeated lockdowns, restrictions and mask wearing have stolen our spontaneity and joy. KENDALL MORTON proposes that Christmas is the time to rediscover the joy of life and to share it with older members of the family.

arents and other older relatives may still be feeling fearful and isolated. This makes sense as the early health advice was for them to stay home as they were ‘too vulnerable’. Concerns about their health were paramount. As this crisis drags on, many older (and younger) people experience fear and foreboding day after day. Living in a state of fear overloads one’s body with cortisol. This reduces immunity and can increase the risk of diseases such as atherosclerosis and depression. To combat stress and replace it with joy, here are a few suggestions: 1. Turn off the television news. Apart from knowing what the current health orders are, there is no need to have a daily update on what is happening in hospitals. There is not enough detail in the reporting for it to be meaningful. Statistics do not help anyone feel safe. 2. Make a list of things that feed the spirit. Discuss ideas with older relatives and arrange to make them happen. It may be fish and chips by the water,

watching children swimming in a lake or writing poetry. The aim is to bring light and joy back into everyday life for yourself as well. 3. Connect with people again. Ample research tells us humans are social beings. We need to belong to groups. Being with others brings spontaneity back into our lives. Look at what older relatives have given up during COVID lockdowns and see what connections and group activities can be resumed.

4. Use the rituals of Christmas. Most families have Christmas rituals that give us a sense of continuity from year to year. They involve members of different generations. Rituals create a common dialogue. Assist older family members to complete their usual Christmas rituals such as sending cards, putting up decorations, going to a church service or making shortbread. Engage other family members in these rituals where possible.

5. Be with nature. The magpies don’t know about COVID. They sing their morning song regardless. Spend time in nature and help older relatives to do the same. Studies have shown that time in nature reduces cortisol levels and combats depression. Perhaps you could arrange a picnic or a Sunday drive by the water. There are many cafes in scenic locations that do not require much walking. Google will help find cafes with easy access. 6. Go greener at home. Having a window with a garden view can be enough to lift someone’s mood and reduce anxiety. Even pictures on the wall can be beneficial. One study compared heart surgery patients. Some had direct views of pictures of trees and calm water and it was found they had less anxiety and less need for pain medication than the control group.

We’ll leverage our size and scale to be a force for good to make our members’ world better, seeking out investments to guard and grow their savings and retirement income.” Australian Retirement Trust’s future trustees have flagged that they intend to deliver a post-merger fee reduction to apply from the start of the next financial year, with final details to be communicated to members prior to June 30, 2022. The current 1.4 million Sunsuper members will become members of Australian Retirement Trust’s public offering as will all new members not connected to the Queensland Government. The importance of bowel cancer screening Bowel cancer is the third most common type of new diagnosed cancer in Australia and will affect around one in 13 people. ARMY VALUES SERVE COAST PROPERTY DEVELOPERS WELL Two friends are bringing the values they adopted in the military to their property development company.

emi Rafter and Josh Myers, two 30-something Sunshine Coast mates who forged a friendship while serving in the Australian Army, say the values they learned in military life have worked well for them in the hard-nosed business of property development. “Principles such as respect, integrity, ethical conduct and professionalism are drummed into you in the Army and have provided us with a great grounding in business,” says Mr Rafter, 36, whose family has been involved in property valuation and sales on the Coast for decades. “They have put us in a good place to manage other people’s money,” he says. Mr Rafter and Mr Myers, who now operate the successful Sunshine Coastbased property development company RM Developments, are part of a new generation of property entrepreneurs in the region, overseeing a portfolio of up to $500 million in projects. They met in January 2003 at a signing ceremony in Brisbane after they’d both enrolled as officer recruits in the Australian Army. Over the next decade, they shared experiences that included

Josh Myers and Remi Rafter at work in their Maroochydore office earning university degrees in civil engineering and business, building housing and medical infrastructure in the Australian Outback, and delivering a $60-million project in Afghanistan, where 1100 military personnel lived and worked. When they left the Army in 2014 they settled on the Sunshine Coast, Mr Rafter securing a position as a development manager with the Reed Property Group, and Mr Myers landing a job as a project manager for development consultancy, Project Urban. In 2017 they joined forces and

launched their own property development company. Initially, the firm focused on development management work, typically for a landowner or investor. The two young entrepreneurs were ambitious, however, and impressed clients and contractors with their attention to detail and their ability to identify, and overcome, challenges within the construction process. “We’re very thorough and conscious of the risks involved,” says Mr Rafter. “We expect high standards from our suppliers and sub-contractors. considered hard task masters.” Their expertise covers a wide range of projects – land development, townhouses, units and commercial and industrial building. A key focus at present is a residential apartment project in South Brisbane, with 312 apartments in a high-rise complex occupying 2600sqm of land. RM Developments is acting on behalf of a syndicate comprising a superannuation fund and a foreign listed property developer to deliver a project that could be worth as much as $300 million. The company has just launched its own $32-million residential development in Maleny, comprising 63 large lots ranging in size from 800sqm to 1728sqm, with prices starting at $499,000. They are also putting the finishing touches to a $40-million mixed use residential and commercial development adjacent to Maroochydore’s massive Sunshine Plaza shopping complex. ARABIAN KNIGHTS AND CAMELS AS SUMMER AUCTIONS STEAM AHEAD A little bit of nostalgia crept into last week’s auctions, which saw plenty of locals coming out even in stormy weather. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

esidents and visitors around Mooloolaba Esplanade were greeted with the most extraordinary sight one evening as strange looking men in charge of even stranger looking animals paraded along the Esplanade. It was December 1999 and Graeme Juniper was in the process of officially opening his second Mooloolaba Esplanade development with fanfare that was quite out of the ordinary. Perhaps it’s the building name Zanzibar which gives you some idea of what the summer night opening was like. Define Property agent Ross Cattle said he took great delight in regaling the large crowd gathered for the auction of Unit 801 of 47–51 Mooloolaba Esplanade with his memories of the brilliant occasion. “The Juniper family were really proud of the building,” Mr Cattle said. “They had Arabian knights, camels in the street, Arabian tents; it was a big affair. “It was a huge deal for Mooloolaba.” With those images embedded in the minds of the 12 registered bidders, the

auction of the three-bedroom Unit 801 kicked off. But it was three committed local buyers who were the last ones standing. The apartment finally sold under the hammer to a local investor for $1.920 million. “Graeme actually knows the buyer,” Mr Cattle said. “When we sold it, Graeme who isn’t easy to please sometimes when it comes to prices for property, thought it was a fantastic result for the building.”

ON THE CUSP The sale of the waterfront gem at 24 Coorumbong Close in Mooloolaba is just so close. Next Property Group agent Loren Wimhurst said the four-bedroom home went to auction on Saturday with two very keen bidders battling it out for the prize. It’s been a keenly sought-after property with several potential buyers circling around in the period prior to auction. Located just minutes by small boat to restaurants at The Wharf and Mooloolaba Beach, the north-east facing block is located within a cul-de-sac with a central garden. “It’s seriously just a few minutes to walk to the beach,” Ms Wimhurst said.

Bidding at the auction didn’t quite reach the mark. It passed in with the final two bidders continuing negotiations. “We’re expecting it to sell closer to $2.5 million,” Ms Wimhurst said. For the unlucky bidder there is another option. Local builders Joanne and Scott Browning are selling their four-bedroom house which they built at 2 Leo Crescent in Alexandra Headland. “It’s a beautiful home,” Ms Wimhurst said. “The Brownings are associated with high-calibre builds in blue-chip positions. “The price will be reflective of the quality of the build and its location which is just a block to the flags.”

KULUIN EXCELS First National Riverside agent Jason Burns sounded both exhausted and elated by the results of last Wednesday night’s auction of the five-bedroom at 16 Riverbreeze Way in Kuluin. Eight registered bidders, all locals, and a crowd of about 50 onlookers braved the stormy conditions. “It was very competitive,” Mr Burns said. “It was probably one of the best I have had this year because of the number of bidders, the size of the crowd, the competitive bidding and then selling for a lot more than the owner expected.” The property sold under the hammer to

It was a stormy afternoon for the auction of 16 Riverbreeze Way, Kuluin a local buyer for $1.050 million. “It’s an amazing result,” Mr Burns added. “I personally don’t know of a residential property selling over one million in Kuluin, under the hammer.”

PRIZED MOOLOOLABA SPIT Saturday’s auction of the two-bedroom apartment, Unit 8 in 83 Parkyn Parade, attracted an extraordinary 20 registered bidders. “Parkyn Parade is in high demand,” listing agent Mr Cattle said. “It’s a unique location with the river one side and the ocean on the other of the road. “Parkyn Parade’s been like a sleeping giant for many years, but in the last four years people are saying this area is incredible,” Mr Cattle added. We have sold an enormous amount of real estate over the last four years in Parkyn Parade.” The apartment sold under the hammer to a local buyer who will live there for $1.5 million. SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

A tale of two sides. Last weekend I caught a wave and had someone blatantly drop in. I figured it was crowded, so I yelled stay on. He then preceded to tell me to “f@ck off” and pulled off the wave, much to my confusion. I figured his brain capacity may have been limited, so I let it be. Moments later, I was talking to a coastal visitor who was so excited to be surfing but kept getting in the wrong position. After a discussion about how excited he was and he just wanted to catch one wave that would make his day, I spotted a set wave approaching and screamed at him to paddle his heart out. He caught it and his day was now perfect with a happy vibe that would last a week. So maybe listen and you actually might stumble across some kindness that will make your day. I saw the first guy in the car park later with a flat tyre. Merry Christmas peeps and spread the kindness.

The inner reefs have been fishing well after the rain has given the rivers a flush with some nice snapper and mixed reef fish being caught. There has also been a few mackerel around along the dirty water line. The rivers have been a bit tough due to the rain, but fishing the beeper holes on the high tide has been the best option. The beaches have been quiet but fishing the high tide again has produced some nice size dart and a few flathead. Borumba and Lake McDonald have had the best reports of bass of late and as usual there has been some good action chasing saratoga at Borumba. A short road trip to Monduran dam could be worth it if you like chasing barramundi.
