As we edge closer to the end of the year, I can feel the weight of that all-too-busy Christmas period settling in. I love the holidays, but that’s not to say the lead up doesn’t have an impact on energy and stress levels. So, it was with great interest this week that I read the following quote: “The ocean is an elixir. Nature is crucial. It teaches you patience, connection, breath and awareness. The ocean is as close to a representation of universal law as you can see in the 3D. A force far greater than we can comprehend. Not needing to be tamed but to be respected.” They may only be words, but when strung together with such meaning, they leave me feeling reenergised and inspired – as I hope they do for you. It’s about recognising the need to

pause, reflect and take in the beauty that surrounds us, and I have author, mentor and influencer Nikki Fogden-Moore to thank for this reminder. Nikki is one of those people whose story leaves its imprint. The Sunshine Coast woman took a traumatic childhood experience and created a life of hope and fulfilment – not an easy task. This week, Nikki spoke with journalist Shirley Sinclair about tackling life head on. The story is on page 16. A Fire Inside is a new documentary that features the human stories behind the 2019–20 Australian bushfires. WORDS: Tony Magnusson, AAP.

n December 2019, filmmakers Justin Krook and Luke Mazzaferro were flying around Australia to promote a documentary they’d made about the future of artificial intelligence when they began to notice a troubling, and recurring, sight far below them. “We kept looking out the window and saying to each other, ‘What the hell is going on?’” Mr Mazzaferro recalls. Travelling up and down the eastern seaboard, their view was increasingly one of enormous smoke plumes peeling away from ever larger swathes of charred, scarred landscape. “We were well aware of the fires that had been raging for months already, but then seeing the scale of it all from the sky was deeply unsettling,” he says. A couple of months later, the pair was invited to hear a long-time member of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS), Andrew Flakelar, share his frontline experiences of a winter, spring and summer like no other. Over the course of the 2019–20 bushfire season, 33 people, including nine firefighters, lost their lives, 3094 homes were destroyed and more than 17 million hectares of land was burnt. Listening to Mr Flakelar, the filmmakers realised they may have

took on his marriage and mental health. It’s a theme picked up by Commissioner of Resilience NSW Shane Fitzsimmons, who was chief of New South Wales’ RFS during the 2019-20 bushfire season. “There is this stigma or shame about being emotionally impacted or affected,” he says. “I would plead to everybody, and particularly our men – not exclusively, but men are the worst offenders in my experience – we’ve got to do more to open the doors and give permission to our mates, our colleagues, our families, our loved ones, that it is okay to be impacted and affected by traumatic experiences.” In several cases, the filmmakers stumbled upon subjects by happy accident. Paula Zaja, who runs a community pantry and food rescue service in Bargo near Balmoral, is one of them. At the height of the fires and during recovery last year, her service was helping feed 4000 families. “We saw a sign that read ‘Our Community Pantry’. We went in and said we were making a documentary about the fires, and Paula said, ‘I’ve got some lasagne coming out of the oven, do you want lunch?’ That started our relationship with Paula,” he says. Mr Mazzaferro hopes the film encourages viewers to realise that everyone can make a difference in their community. “Individual actions can go a long way,” he says. “It’s not just the firefighter who rushes towards danger when everyone else is fleeing. It’s the Paulas of the world who are providing basic human needs like a hot meal.”

The bushfire season of 2019-20 had long-lasting impacts. Sadly, 33 lives were lost and a total of 3094 homes were destroyed across the nation. More than 17 million hectares were burned and more than one billion animals were killed.

Volunteer firefighter Nathan Barnden from Jellat Rural Fire Service features in the documentary stumbled upon the subject matter for their next documentary. Mr Krook, an American who has spent much of the past four years living and working in Australia, was astonished to learn 90 per cent of Australia’s firefighters – some 170,000 people – are volunteers. “That was actually the lightbulb moment when we decided to make this film,” he says from his LA base. “We have volunteer firefighting forces here in California as well, but the scale and level of what Australia has, and how much it’s relied upon, is incredible.” From the beginning, the pair was inspired to focus on individuals and communities affected by the fires. Even so, the first half hour of their feature-length documentary, A Fire Inside,

plunges the viewer into the eye of the firestorm as various subjects give frequently terrifying first-person accounts of their experiences. And while the pair didn’t want to make a film about climate change, there are meaningful contributions from a meteorologist and an Indigenous fire practitioner about what we’re doing wrong. Mr Mazzaferro says that by focusing on just a handful of townships, they were able to capture “that lovely, intertwined, small community feel, which I think is emblematic of the story at large”. One of the central subjects is Nathan Barnden, a young, volunteer firefighter with Jellat Rural Fire Service brigade in New South Wale’s Bega Valley. On New Year’s Eve 2019, he risked his life to enter a burning house and rescue a grandmother, her daughter and three grandchildren. Mr Barnden saved the lives of 13 people. Nevertheless, he became wracked with guilt that he couldn’t save his uncle and cousin, who had perished while trying to defend their home. As the documentary progresses, it becomes clear that Mr Barnden is not alone in having struggled to process the trauma he experienced. In fact, you wish you ccould fly, because on a Queensland summer day, all you Queenslan want to do is jump into the cool, cold Pacific Ocean as fast as pos possible. The early morning sky is aqua blue, su sun rays are as enveloping as a wetsuit and the there’s nothing but good sensations as you w wash into the first wave of the day. Your body iis tingling with exhilaration and you wouldn’t b be dead for quids. But you could b be, because this magnificent ocean has its own w ways and agendas. If you’re in the right place at the right time, it will be good to you. But if tthe good feeling emboldens you to push deeper deeper, paddle out further, put your feet on a far-r far-reaching sandbank, urges you out of the flag flags away from the lifesavers’ eyes, then you’re rrisking your life. Sixty-year-old Marcoola Surf Life Saving Club life membe member Dave McLean has been a lifesaver since h he was 14 years old. Over that period, he has completed some 50 rescues and 20 resuscitations. Referring to t the resuscitations, he says: “Not all o of them worked. There have been some tragic accidents. Some that tr have been co completely avoidable if warnings had ha been heeded and others are just, well, wel horrific accidents. “Remember drowning doesn’t “Remem happen between the flags,” he bet cautions. As an active patrol member, Mr a McLean is up for patrol duty every third week. week On those weekends, along with other team members, he wakes at the crack of dawn to ensure he arrives 15 m minutes early for the shift. “Hanging out with your kids – that’s one of the great things about surf lifesaving,” Marcoola club general manager and active member Drew Palmer says. “There aren’t too many sports where you are side by side with your kids – my son is now my patrol captain,” he adds. Mr Palmer has been part of the club for eight years and for the past 12 months has been the general manager. Like many of the club’s members and friends, he is ecstatic about the club’s recent awards. “First, we gained the Club of the Year award against 13 other clubs [from the Redcliffe to Rainbow Beach region],” he says. “We then went against six regions to win Queensland Club of the Year award.” Although the club didn’t win the Australian title, there was plenty to celebrate at a recent club cocktail party. More than 150 people attended the event and Mr Palmer describes the atmosphere as fantastic and relaxed. It was in 1972 that Mr McLean came to the fledging club and also found something so ‘fantastic’ there that he has never left. “I’m not a foundation member, the club started in 1969,” Mr McLean says. But he does recall the club consisting of ‘one old fibro shack’. “It had three rooms – one for equipment, one for gear storage and the other was the bunkhouse. It had accommodation for about 24 there,” he says. “There were no toilets, you had to go up the road to use the public toilets.” In those days, three patrol shifts were required for three hours each on weekends. “You could do one on a Saturday and two on a Sunday,” he recalls. Mr McLean mentions the drownings in 1996 and a double fatality in 1999 and says witnessing life and death events is life changing. “From free and fun loving, it becomes very serious, and you realise how you can really make a difference.” He has never regretted being among the 12 people who put their names down as guarantors for a loan to support the first major clubhouse extension in 1993. “It was big thing at the time,” he says. “We could have lost our houses, everything.” But history shows the right choices were made and 30 years later the club has grown from strength to strength. It now has 650 members including volunteers and nippers and is currently gearing up for the 2021/22 patrol season. myweeklypreview.com.au

Early lifesavers of the Sunshine Coast Basilus and Anna Suosaari migrated to Queensland from Finland in 1912, settling in the Bli Bli area in 1916. The following year, Basilus selected property on the northern side of Petrie Creek. Tom Prentis fought in France with the 9th Infantry Battalion during 1918. The battle-weary veteran arrived home more than 11 months after the Armistice. He was the most significant veteran in the district to change his dungarees for a bathing suit. In the summer of 1920-21, he walked for many weeks through the farming communities of Bli Bli, Maroochy River and Rosemount looking for members to revive the fortunes of his beloved surf life saving club. The five Suosaari sons – Axel, Sandy, Joe, Jack and Vic – all became members of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. Axel joined during the 1919-20 season and

became the 100-yard Australian freestyle champion in 1929 and 1930, and was reputedly the best surf swimmer in the world at that time. Club members did not have the luxury of training in a swimming pool and instead would train in Petrie Creek as they ferried sugar cane up and down the waterway with one driving the punt as the other swam alongside. Young Joe held the 400-yard breaststroke Australian record for many years. Finland wanted the brothers to represent their country of birth in the 1928 Olympic Games but they both refused, hoping to wear the green and gold of their adopted country. Did you know? The first wooden surfboat north of Brisbane, known as The Spray, was officially launched on December 27, 1930 at Mooloolaba Beach. Constructed by local boat builders, the Kuskopf brothers of Buderim, this heavy wooden boat took about eight strong men to move. It was modern for the time. Crowds numbering upwards of 1000 people were on Mooloolaba Beach when the surf lifeboat, which a few days previously had been handed over to the Mooloolaba Life Saving Club, was officially christened The Spray.

Who are surf lifesavers? Surf lifesavers are volunteers who have qualified for the surf bronze medallion. They patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays. Lifeguards are employed by local councils to patrol the busier beaches. Surf lifesavers had to qualify for the Royal Life Saving Society’s proficiency certificate or bronze medallion until the Surf Bathing

Association introduced the surf bronze medallion. Today anyone over the age of 15 can qualify as a surf lifesaver. First you must pass a series of tests including a first aid exam and a simulated rescue. You must also complete a 200-metre run, a 200-metre swim then another 200-metre run in less than eight minutes.

Swim safe The key signs to look for when spotting a rip are: • Deeper and/or darker water. • Fewer breaking waves. • Sandy-coloured water extending beyond the surf zone. • Debris or seaweed. • Significant water movement. Sometimes it can be easier to look for where the waves are breaking consistently, and then look to each side where they don’t break consistently. Those areas are rip currents. How to survive a rip: If you’re caught in a rip current, the most important thing is to conserve your energy. Consider these options: • Stay calm. • Seek help. Raise your arm and call out. You may be rescued. • Float with the current. It may return you to a shallow sandbank. • Swim parallel to the beach or towards the breaking waves. You may escape it by getting back into breaking waves.

ive thousand – this is how many Sunshine Coast children are exposed to family violence each year – and it’s 5000 too many. Local organisation SunnyKids works tirelessly to break the cycle and give every child the chance to reach their potential. In the 2020-21 financial year, SunnyKids identified that 70 per cent of the children the organisation supported were from homes experiencing family or domestic violence (DV). General manager Kathleen Hope says the number of people SunnyKids supports on the Sunshine Coast is only “scratching the surface”. “You can walk into any school on the Sunshine Coast and a third of those children will have either lived through DV or be experiencing DV in some form right now,” Ms Hope says. “That is incredible to me in the most horrific way. “The need is huge on the Sunshine Coast, and there is a perceived level of affluence here so it can be really confronting to understand that your neighbour might be experiencing this. “Because this topic has only recently

SunnyKids had an increase of 47 per cent in referrals last financial year. been something that we can talk about publicly, we have been behind the eight ball for many, many decades.” Recent SunnyKids statistics reveal the organisation supported 1598 individuals in 2020-21 and 1091 of them were children. This is up 14 per cent on the previous year and equates to more than 20,000 hours of direct support provided to children, young people and their families, plus 9303 nights of emergency accommodation. Ms Hope says change begins with

action and that actions starts with interrupting the trauma and re-writing history, so child victims do not become adult perpetrators. “What we are trying to do is interrupt violence, repair historical trauma and plan for a different future, and that takes a lot of work,” she says. “If we’re really looking at breaking the cycle, we can’t look at interrupting trauma and violence for adults only; we have to look at changing the patterns of behaviour for children. That takes time and effort.” SunnyKids embodies the belief that it takes a village to raise a child and Ms Hope says that requires changing generational behaviour towards unhealthy or toxic relationships. “There are so many things that are repeated over generations so it’s time to stop, take stock and ask what needs to be different here. “If we’re looking at how a family functions, if the only example you’ve got of what a relationship looks like, intimate or

otherwise, is what you’ve been exposed to as a child, then you want to make sure that is the right kind of relationship. If it’s toxic, if it’s unhealthy, if it’s abusive, if it’s violent, if it’s controlling, then you will replicate that because you know no different. “If we aren’t a part of changing what that child is exposed to, we can expect no different than having those issues when they become an adult.” SunnyKids provides emergency accommodation, as well as domestic violence and referral counselling to local families in need, and partners with health, education and child protection agencies to keep children safe. Ms Hope says it costs $600 to support a child through its services and SunnyKids receives no government funding for working with children. She is calling on the community to open their hearts for the organisation’s Sunny Xmas for Kids campaign. “Christmas is unfortunately our busiest time of year,” Ms Hope says. “It’s a time when unhealthy relationships become incredibly toxic when you add in financial stress, alcohol and family gatherings. “Christmas is supposed to be the happiest time in a child’s life but unfortunately for a lot of the families we work with, it isn’t.” Individuals and businesses are invited to donate to the campaign or commit to $50 per month to sponsor a child. This year SunnyKids hopes to raise enough money to support 150 children.

ikki Fogden-Moore’s life seems so full-on, it can make your head spin. The long-time Yaroomba resident has spent 25 years working with elite athletes, CEOs, movers and shakers and their teams, across some of the world’s leading brands. She is a high-performance coach, mentor, author, brand-maker, podcaster and social media influencer. Early in her career, her clients also dubbed her ‘The Mojo Maker’. This ‘do-er’ seamlessly moves from one major project

to the next, helping leaders or social media followers one appointment, post, publicspeaking engagement or self-help book at a time. “I see myself as a navigator for my clients: in the trenches, shining light down the path ahead and working on multiple dimensions,” she says. “Leaders are not defined by title but rather by attitude, action and their ability to create impact.” “Attitude, action, impact” could be Ms Fogden-Moore’s personal mantra. And in these COVID-crazy times, those words are

even more important for overcoming challenges and having the self-belief to take control and reach your potential – becoming the CEO of your own life. Ms Fogden-Moore made that transition early in life: an unconscious awakening that may have had its roots in an horrendous school bus crash that resulted in five deaths, life-changing disabilities for some of the students and her own hospitalisation. “I had a huge premonition seconds before the bus went over the cliff that we were going way too fast and we

were about to crash,” she recalls vividly. “I know exactly where I was sitting and remember the violence of the initial screeching and careering off the road, where all the girls from the back seat flew past us to the front … hitting my head as we were thrown around. “If you’ve ever been in an accident like that, you will know when I say the smell of bus fumes, steel and the leather seats are all triggers in your cellular system that take you to that moment time and time again.” On reflection, the accident connects some dots in her life today. “Not until the ambulance driver who received a long service award reached out to me 30 years later did the bus accident really play a bigger role in my consideration for how I coped with fear or challenges with sheer grit and determination,” she says. “There are many profound reflections for me looking back that make me understand why, as an adult, I just shut down any fear and did my best to soldier through whatever I was facing. As a 12-year-old new boarder at a school, hours away from home, that was my only option: suck it up. In those days, there was no therapy or conversations. I remember having to come up with a mantra to get back in buses to go to school sports events and trips, completely petrified: MOM (mind over matter).

PROFILE “We all go through things in life – all of us, and for me it’s not about hanging on to the trauma but recognising the impact and then having full gratitude and awareness for the gifts of being here and in the now.” Ms Fogden-Moore says while she feels sorry for the younger version of herself, she recognises that the experience created in her a “complete wholehearted love of being in my life and an absolute tenacity to appreciate each day and the fact I can run, jump, swim and move, as that was at one point not looking very possible”. No wonder she seems to be on a mission to live life to the fullest. You might wonder when she has time for sleep and “life”. But not only does she find time for “life”, she makes it a routine. “If you don’t create healthy habits, you are not committing to yourself. “We really have no excuse – it’s all about choice not chance.” She believes no success should come at the cost of health and living life. “No [entrepreneurial] life or any kind of life should be filled with anxiety, overwhelm and depression. You do not need to accept that as the flip side of success. “My work is very much an extension of who I am – no excuses, plain and simple. So I do work ‘long hours’, but it’s by choice not chance,” she says. “I bring the best clarity, vision, creativity and conscious

support to my clients and my business when I am happy, healthy and in flow. “So, integrating my weeks with space to ensure vision and wellbeing are critical for clear decision making and retaining the capacity to work at the pace I do. “I am a firm believer, and practise what I preach, in work/life blend. ICONIC DONUT BAKERY TO OPEN IN MOOLOOLABA A popular hinterland bakery, known for its one-kilogram donuts, is expanding to a coastal location. In just four years the family-owned and operated Kenilworth Country Bakery has become a tourism icon, thanks to its mouthwatering donuts and plans are now underway to open a second retail outlet at The Wharf Mooloolaba in January. Owner Jenna Sanders says it is time for the 97-year-old bakery, which is famous for selling up to 5000 donuts a day, to open its second outlet closer to the coast. Enter Kenilworth Coastal Bakery. “We really wanted to be in a tourist destination with strong foot traffic and The Wharf Mooloolaba is ideal, as there’s lots of hustle and bustle, with both tourists and locals alike visiting seven days a week, so it makes a lot of sense for us to have a presence there. We’ve also strengthened our family connection with my brother Nathan coming into the business.” The takeaway-only venue will sell donuts, pies, sausage rolls and coffee.

The project, led by the Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN), will position the region as an epicentre for supporting food and beverage businesses to scale up. It has been made possible with the support of an $8.78-million federal government grant from the Modern Manufacturing Initiative Translation Stream. Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien, who made the funding announcement, says the precinct will take the local manufacturing sector sky high. “The Turbine Precinct’s unique end-to-end, collaborative design will transform the food and beverage manufacturing sector on the Sunshine Coast and draw international attention,” he says. “This model is an Australian-first. The Turbine Precinct will provide local food and

beverage businesses with end-to-end support and it will be the envy of the world. “This federal funding directly supports the development of the Turbine Precinct’s common-use infrastructure, collaborative manufacturing services and research capabilities. “This means that local startups will have access to the equipment and resources required to go to market and the advanced infrastructure and networks to scale globally.” The Sunshine Coast Airport base will give local businesses the unique ability to more easily access domestic and international markets and leverage a range of free trade agreements that the Australian Government has recently secured.

TOY RETAILER CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY It hasn’t been all child’s play, but Bli Bli-based retailer Absolut Toys is still going strong after 15 years in business. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

elebrating 15 years in business is no mean feat and for independent Sunshine Coast toy store Absolut Toys, this milestone is something to be proud of. Relocating to the region from Germany in 2006 to run Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli, Stephan Uhrig and Birte Benecke-Uhrig soon discovered the quality European children’s toys they so fondly grew up with were not as readily available for their then-six-month-old son. “When it came to the big move, Stephan made sure some of his childhood toys had prioritised space in the shipping container when we moved here,” Ms Benecke-Uhrig says.

“He wanted our son to play and enjoy the toys that had been kept from his own childhood and eventually be handed down to future generations.” Realising a gap in the market, Mr Uhrig began sourcing castle-themed toys to sell in Sunshine Castle’s gift shop and it soon became clear the family was going to specialise in selling quality toys at affordable prices. “In 2010 the opportunity arose to lease a separate shop at the old fire station in Maroochydore and Absolut Toys came to life in its own brand-new home,” Ms Benecke-Uhrig says. Absolut Toys began stocking a large selection of beautifully crafted wooden

toys, educational toys and eco toy brands and Mr Uhrig, who is locally known as the toy guru, would make annual trips to the world’s biggest toy fair in Germany to ensure children had access to the best toys here. “Those that had discovered Absolut Toys became fans and appreciated the vast range, fair pricing, personal service and advice that we were able to give them,” Mr Uhrig says. Over the years, the local store has faced the global financial crisis, competition from larger convenience and chain stores, as well as the recent COVID pandemic, and despite all odds it remained a local institution. Eventually the online world took off and the difficult decision was made to close the Maroochydore store. “We got ready to move our toy shop back into our castle and early in 2018 Absolut Toys moved back into its womb, it’s kingdom and its heart space at the castle,” Ms Benecke-Uhrig says. “Early 2020 – the world changed with COVID-19. When the castle, as a tourist attraction, had to shut its doors there was suddenly a new need. ‘Give me a puzzle and I will have a happy family in lockdown’ was the general consensus amongst the community. “The phone, messenger and the Absolut Toys website were inundated with requests to buy puzzles, any puzzle.” Ms Benecke-Uhrig says she is pleased to see a shift back to traditional toys and shopping local, and hopes this trend will continue into the Christmas season. “While the future is unsure still, traditional, educational and quality toys are more in fashion again than ever,” she says. BUCLOCK STREET WIN Caloundra Main Street Urban Revitalisation project has been recognised at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) 2021 National Awards. The Bulcock Street project won the Landscape Architecture Award in the Urban Design category for exhibiting rare and valued qualities of innovation, progressiveness and creativity. Sunshine Coast division two councillor Terry Landsberg says the urban streetscape project transformed a regional main street into a vibrant, smart and liveable community space. “The jury said as Australia’s ‘first smart city urban streetscape demonstration and testing facility’ the project deserves considerable acknowledgement, but for a project to remain playful while staying true to place is what makes this project truly successful. The jury went on to say the design created a vibrant, green and community-focused place that demonstrated a strong focus on design development.” He says the $12 million project re-energised the precinct using smart technology, catenary lighting, public art installations and opened up the main street to be more pedestrian friendly. The AILA Awards recognised 47 projects across 17 different categories.

HATCHING A GREAT IDEA A freshly hatched cohort of feathered friends has been warmly welcomed at North Arm State School, bringing nothing but smiles to the faces of students. The Chickens for Children project teaches students practical life lessons through collectively nurturing a family of chickens from the incubation period through to adulthood. President of the North Arm State School P&C, Aveen Kerr, says the project has been a huge success

and is having a markable impact on student outcomes. “As this project has comes into fruition, we are finding it to be even better than we could have ever imagined,” Ms Kerr says. “We previously had chickens at the school, and it was something that we really wanted to bring back because it really aligns closely with our heart, mind and earth philosophy.” During the incubator program, children are taught how to care for and nurture the eggs to give them the best chance of survival. Ms Kerr says while it can be hard for the children, one of the best lessons to be learnt from this process is that not everything always goes to plan. “The effect of having the chickens in the classroom has been unbelievable, particularly with the older grades, as they have been so gentle, engaged and passionate.” The program was made possible thanks to a $4500 federal government through the Australian government’s Stronger Communities grant. Federal member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the grant is a real ‘coop’ for the students in North Arm. “This program provides so much more than the simple joy of watching eggs hatch,” Mr O’Brien says. “It’s about the learning and growth opportunities that come with the responsibility of looking after another life.” Members of Coolum Men’s Shed are also throwing their support behind the project, constructing the chicken coup and making the nesting boxes for the eight chickens.

MOOLOOLABA’S NEW VIEW Residents and visitors have a new vantage point to take in the views of Mooloolaba Beach down to Point Cartwright. The first part of the new Northern Park in Mooloolaba opened to the community on November 9 and includes a new viewing platform at the Alex Bluff Foreshore Park, a boardwalk and staircase linking the boardwalk to Mooloolaba Esplanade, plus significant embankment revegetation and plants around a new grass open space. The new infrastructure is part of the greater Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project, which will increase the public beachfront park and includes new community spaces and amenities. “Both the viewing platform and the boardwalk feature plenty of seating options and sweeping coastal views,” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “I believe fitness enthusiasts will also take advantage of a great new 430-metre circuit along the boardwalk, up the staircase to the exercise equipment, and then around Mooloolaba Esplanade to the viewing platform again.” He adds more than 70 new trees and 10,000 new shrubs and groundcovers will also be planted in this first section.

A wound care nurse has been honoured with an inaugural award in memory of a local hospital founder. Kylie Wydell is the recipient of Buderim Private Hospital’s Elsa Wilson Award, which recognises a member of staff who goes above and beyond to uphold the hospital’s values of working together, respect, justice, compassion and leading through learning. A clinical nurse and stomal therapist, Ms Wydell says she is surprised and excited to receive the award. “I accepted the award on behalf of all the patients I have cared for here at Buderim Private Hospital over the past seven years,” Ms Wydell says. “My patients have chronic wounds and stomas and it’s really comforting to be part of their journey to help them get better and make a difference to their life.” Established in 1980, Buderim Private Hospital was the brainchild of Mrs Wilson, who felt her husband, a local GP, and his patients should not have to travel to Nambour for hospitalisation. Unfortunately, Mrs Wilson passed away from cancer in 1982 shortly after the hospital opening. As a tribute to

NEW INITIATIVE AIMS TO REDUCE KNIFE CRIME A state-wide initiative to reduce knife crime has been launched on the Sunshine Coast, with a Super Bowl champion at the helm. The campaign, ‘I live my life without a knife’, is set to educate our community, and particularly our youths, on legislation around knives and knife carrying. Knife carrying has steadily increased during the past five years in Queensland, with an increase of knife-related offences by about four per cent each year from 2016 to 2020. Three in five knife-related offences occurred in public places in 2020, which was an increase of 33 per cent from 2016. Former NFL star Jesse ‘The Monstar’ Williams is getting behind the bid to reduce knife-related crimes. The ex-NFL player was the first Australian to win a Super Bowl championship ring, with the Seattle Seahawks in 2013. He is also an Indigenous youth mentor. He has three messages for the public. • Know the rules: carrying a knife in a public place is unlawful and can result in fines, serious injury and imprisonment. Carrying a knife does not protect you. • Know the consequences: The choices you make can affect the rest of your life

COUNCIL TO TAKE OVER MUSEUM MANAGEMENT At the request of the Landsborough and District Historical Society, Sunshine Coast Council will now manage one of the largest community museums in southeast Queensland, including its collection of more than 14,000 objects. The Landsborough and District Historical Society has operated the Landsborough Museum since 1976 and managed its collection in the former Landsborough Shire Council Chambers – a council-owned, state heritage-listed building – since 1976. Due to the ever-increasing challenge of attracting a volunteer base, with the demanding skills and experience

now required to manage the financial obligations of caring for the collection and running the museum of the scope and scale of Landsborough, the society has asked the council to take over the reins. Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says while he is pleased the council can step in, the call for help from the historical society shows the enormous pressure volunteer groups face. “The Landsborough and District Historical Society has given 45 years of dedicated service to help preserve and, most importantly, share some this region’s heritage and this is no small feat,” Cr Baberowski says. “I’d like to sincerely thank the society and all past and present members who gave their time, effort and energy to this endeavour. “In mid-2020 and again in 2021, the society wrote to council to make known they were struggling and requested assistance to manage the museum and its collection. “Over the past two years we’ve been working with the society to find ways to support them, but unfortunately the struggles remain. “It is therefore with gratitude and some sadness that council accepts the gift of the entire Landsborough Museum collection into the region’s Cultural Heritage collection and has agreed to take over the management of the Landsborough Museum from 2022.” Sunshine Coast Council agreed to take on the responsibility at November 10’s Ordinary Meeting, noting the significance of the museum and its collection to the region’s history. It will now begin the formal process of taking ownership and developing a strategic plan to map the future of the museum and its collection – a process the council expects to be completed by early 2022.

WILDLIFE HQ WELCOMES BABY Wildlife HQ has had some pretty cute little Tasmanian devils, dingo pups, koalas, emus and ring-tailed lemurs, but could this be the zoo’s most adorable baby yet? Meet Ameia. She is a southern hairy-nosed wombat joey that recently arrived at the Big Pineapple attraction. Wildlife HQ says she had a difficult start to life, having lost both parents in South Australia. However, she’s been getting considerable attention from the staff at Wildlife HQ, who say looking after her is heaps of fun due to her cheeky personality. Ameia will become a part of the zoo’s education program. The southern hairy-nosed wombat is described as a stout and robust animal with strong claws adapted to digging. The wombats are distributed patchily in areas of semi-arid shrubland and mallee from the eastern Nullarbor Plain to the New South Wales border area. Wombats, which can grow up to 32 kilograms, dig large burrow complexes, in which up to 10 may sleep.

Long-time member Lorraine Gallagher was also nominated for Queensland Council of Garden Clubs’ Person of the Year award for her tireless work to collect and distribute goods to local domestic violence victims and the homeless, as well as organising monthly bus trips for the club. July 19 marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of well-known Caloundra man Heremaia ‘Maia’ Ngamanu. The close-knit community of Caloundra came together to celebrate his life with a surf competition at Dicky Beach on September 29. From fine fare to decadent cakes, it is not uncommon these days for foodie creations to feature edible flowers and unique plants. We are up harvesting bright and early. We collect our edible blooms and clip our microgreens and leaves before the heat of the day sets in. Once harvested, we begin to prepare and pack our orders ready for our daily deliveries. We have a fabulous team of farm hands, packers, delivery people. How long have you been working in this business? We have built our business from the ground up over the past nine years, slowly setting up infrastructure, meeting and

Mango Coyo cake Mangoes are just the most divine fruit and we are blessed with the best up here in Queensland. They are only available for such a small period of time; we really do need to make the most of them. This perfect summer dessert is gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and refined sugar free. Plus, it is a goer for the majority of dietary restrictions and full of nutritious wholesome ingredients. Instead of coconut cream, silky smooth, super creamy Coyo yoghurt has been used in this dessert. It adds plenty of plant-powered probiotic and provides beneficial bacteria. This cake can be made ahead of time and kept in the freezer until ready to use, making it perfect to plan ahead for Christmas events. Also, it can be made into individual serves or two small cakes. This dessert is fantastic for hot summer days and nights and just a little bit fancy.

BASE 1 cup OWN macadamias 1 cup OWN raw cashews 1 tsp Chefs Choice pure vanilla extract 1 cup OWN shredded coconut 5 organic medjool dates 1 tbsp Kunara coconut oil 2 tbsp Absolute Organic Maple syrup FILLING 1 ½ cups OWN raw cashew, pre-soaked in water for at least 2hrs 500g COYO Natural coconut yoghurt 2 organic mango cheeks ¼ cup Absolute Organic maple syrup ¼ cup Kunara coconut oil TOPPING 1–2 organic mango cheeks, thinly sliced ½ cup OWN shredded coconut 1 tbsp Absolute Organic maple syrup

SERVES: 8-10 serves | PREP: 30 minutes | FREEZER TIME: 3+ hours

Method 1. Use coconut oil to lightly grease a nine-inch spring form cake tin or line with baking paper. 2. Make base. Place all base ingredients in food processor and process until a loose dough is formed. 3. Evenly press base mixture into bottom of tin. Set aside in freezer and rinse food processor. 4. Place all filling ingredients into food processor. Process on high for 5–10 minutes, until a very smooth paste is formed. Scrape down sides every couple of minutes. Alternatively, whiz in a high-speed blender. 5. Remove base from freezer and pour in filling layer. Place in freezer for a minimum of three hours to set. 6. Next, make the crunchy topping. Preheat oven to 150˚C and line a baking tray with baking paper. 7. In a small bowl combine shredded coconut and maple syrup. Then, spread out in a thin layer on the the prepared tray. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool completely. 8. When ready to serve, move the cake to the for an hour or two to defrost. Serve with the crunchy topping and thin slices of mango.

Jane Stephens says harsh new penalties for using mobile phones in cars will mean many drivers will lose their licences if caught out.

obile phones are like a limb, the absence of which makes us feel disabled and bereft, lost and alone and now, our mobiles are to be avoided like the plague – at least while you are in control of a vehicle. Drivers: Touch your phone at your peril. Research shows that using a phone while driving is tantamount to driving slightly sloshed, but so many do it. Some drivers know they shouldn’t be texting and driving, so do the sneaky and hold it low and on their lap. But new detection techniques mean there is no hiding anymore: wellpositioned, omnipresent cameras are on the lookout for drivers who are doing the double, and there is big hip-pocket pain for those caught out. For the past three months, those caught on camera using their phone while driving were issued a warning. Incredibly, almost 19,000 drivers were snapped and received a stern letter. Now it’s got real, with a $1033 fine and four demerit points for offenders seen from above – and double that if you do it again within a year. Many people are expected to lose their licences due to points lost.

It is even an offence to have the phone on your lap or any other part of your body or shoot off a quick message at the lights. It matters not if the phone is turned on or in use when the eyes in the sky see the coming together of motorist and mobile: just being in contact is enough. Provisional drivers have extra restrictions, including having their passenger use their phone and share the goings on via loud speaker. The cameras were trialled from July to December last year, spotting more than 15,000 offending drivers. By comparison, 6125 infringement notices were doled out by Queensland Police for all of 2020. Phone-fiddling drivers have clearly been getting away with their habit for a long time. Why has the government gone all tough on the use of phones in cars? Because they are a huge distraction. Like the shiniest of shiny things, they take attention that should be being paid to the road and the cars around us. When behind the wheel, we drivers have one job: to drive. We are now being watched to ensure that is all we do. We can’t say we weren’t warned.

always thought migrating southerners to our part of the world have an agenda, which is to drag us backward banana benders around to their way of thinking, which I fail to get my head around. They want to move here but change what we do to what they do down south, so in my view why not stay where they are? But it’s not that simple, because they like our weather, the price of our real estate (until lately) and less traffic, less density – which is all a big plus. The only minus is they have to deal with us. So once again we have the daylight saving debate come up. As more of them come north, the argument gets louder and there is a petition floating around. I have to admit, this time I am starting to think they are actually smarter than us, as the argument by our state government has always been we can’t have two time zones. I agree with this, as do the cows, but now we are taking over some administrative roles in Norfolk Island in January, it effectively means Queensland has two time zones anyway, so the argument doesn’t stack up. How smart are these people? New South Wales hands over responsibility for

education and health to Queensland and all of a sudden southerners have a solid argument for daylight saving, as we will already have two time zones. I know I am backward, but here is my take. Firstly, I feel sorry for Norfolk folk if they are going to be subjected to the same regime as we are; our lot are flat out running our show now. But even more of an issue is the fact that the geniuses signing the petition thought about how confused the farmers and livestock will be on the immediate borders of the SEDLST (southeast daylight saving time). Some cows will be getting milked an hour later than their neighbours, which will be confusing – the roosters will be crowing out of sync and what about the birdlife in general? Simply put by a simple soul, it is ridiculous to contemplate a different time zone in the southeast and that’s without taking into consideration what the extra hours sunlight will do to the curtains(circa Joh Bjelke-Petersen era). The simple solution is those who want it can basically just head across any border away from Queensland and everyone will be happy.

ONE LAST MARTINI Sami Muirhead says the last Bond movie to star Daniel Craig is well worth a trip to the cinema – even if it’s almost three hours long.

think we are gifted around five fictional characters in our lives, from movies or TV shows, who really matter to us. We think we know these ‘friends’, because we have watched their traumas and triumphs, and they have often been there in a form of escapism for us over decades of our lives. For me, the big character I have always loved is James Bond. If I had to round out the list I would add Harry Potter, Carrie from Sex and the City, Princess Leia from the Star Wars franchise and Molly from A Country Practice. I am also just going to sneak in Jon Snow from Game Of Thrones. Each one of these characters seems real in my head. So, I am still reeling from seeing the final Bond movie for Daniel Craig. I am not going to give any spoilers away, do not fear. But the 007 actor has been very public with the fact the latest Bond movie, No Time To Die, is his last. It is the 25th entry into the nearly 60-year-old spy series. The Brit has played Bond for 15 years and this is perhaps why it is hard for many of us to say goodbye to him as the suave hero who fights the villains of the world, while drinking a vodka martini (shaken, not

stirred) and driving his Aston Martin. But what I loved most about this Bond’s depiction of the quick-witted spy was the fact he was so clearly emotionally floored between mummy issues and dealing with constant heartbreak. This is a far cry from the Bonds I grew up watching, who were far more misogynistic and thought women were purely for decoration. I remember my parents watching re-runs of Sean Connery in Goldfinger on Friday nights. They would eat a block of chocolate and drink nips of sherry as I sat on the stairs watching the spy thriller through the stair railings. I remember thinking how glamorous it all truly was on the TV screen and in my living room with my mum often dressed in a slinky nightie and matching robe from the seventies. That was before we started reaching for ugg boots and flannos for pyjamas. Go and see the latest Bond movie. It does not disappoint, with witty dialogue, spectacular international scenery, and sizzling chemistry. It is long, but full of action and the latest jaw-dropping technology. And there are just enough shots of Daniel Craig’s glorious troubled blue eyes as we say farewell to him: Bond, James Bond.

limate action, surging debt and trade ructions may pose long-term challenges for Australia’s state governments but the outlook for 2022 looks robust Global ratings agency Moody’s says in a report released on Monday that it expects underlying momentum to drive a broadbased economic recovery. The immediate outlook for governments is “stable” on strengthening revenue, as expanding COVID-19 vaccine coverage allows Australia’s borders to reopen. But rising debt burdens pose a challenge for state governments, along with climate and social risks. “An increased focus on environmental factors and net zero may pressure prices and financing of key commodity exports, denting royalty income,” Moody’s says. Policies to meet net zero carbon emission commitments are expected to heighten credit risk and raise the cost of capital for carbon-intensive sectors – tricky when iron ore, coal and gas are the top three exports. A road map to net zero emissions by 2050 co-ordinated with the federal government could change the outlook to positive, Moody’s says. “The absence of a coherent national approach to net zero over recent years has spurred states to develop their own approaches to reaching their 2050 targets – leading to divergent paths and limiting public funding available for carbon transition strategies.” Co-ordinated action would need to identify and invest in new industries as part of broader adaptation and mitigation

strategies to manage increasing carbon transition risk. Evidence of stronger fiscal resolve to get budgets back in the black would brighten the outlook. A recovery in private investment would cut the reliance on public infrastructure as a driver of economic growth. Moody’s suggests more development across the renewable energy sector, including micro-grids that link neighbourhood solar, will support new private investment. States have effectively pushed peak debt levels out to 2025 and beyond with sustained public spending. A further state government spending spree, weak offshore markets, stagnant wages and more trade woes with China will be the main drag on the outlook. Supply chain disruptions and labour shortages will affect Australia and its key trading partners. But Moody’s says resilient agriculture and mining exports have offset COVID-19 disruption and provide a solid basis for recovery next year. Consumer confidence is robust and will further support the rebound in 2022. – AAP

When it’s time for a joint replacement

What are varicose veins?

Patients with symptomatic hip and knee osteoarthritis will often ask me if they should have joint replacement surgery. This decision comes down to a balance of risk versus benefit. Considerations in this analysis include the severity of the pain, the impact on their quality of life, activity profile, age, other health problems, as well as having appropriate attempts to manage the problem non-operatively. If the potential risks are higher than the potential benefits, I will inform patients they are not a candidate for surgery. We will then have a long conversation about the non-operative measures they can take to improve their quality of life. When patients are candidates for joint replacement surgery, I always present the non-operative options as well as inform them about the risks and benefits of the surgery. It is never for me to tell patients when it is the right time to have elective surgery. This is an intensely personal decision with so many factors. Only the patient knows when the time is right.

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted superficial veins that are no longer efficient at returning old blood to your heart. They are common in our society and may be unsightly. They can also cause aches and swelling and, in some cases, lead to skin ulcers, bleeding or blood clots. The likelihood of developing varicose veins increases if your parents suffered with them. Things like pregnancy or having a job where you stand still for long periods can contribute. Varicose veins rarely get better on their own. Generally they slowly get worse and as they do so the risk of complications increases. If your veins are already problematic, treating them earlier rather than later may be appropriate. Treatment can be as simple as elevating the legs to relieve ache, or wearing compression stockings, which are okay in Tasmania but can be a chore in the Queensland climate. Why back pain should never be ignored

The importance of bowel cancer screening

Back pain is one of the most common causes of pain for adults. It can occur when muscles, tendons or other tissues in the back are strained, overused or have been injured. While often mild, in some cases it can be debilitating and severe, even causing permanent damage and disability. Arthritis, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, spinal injuries, herniated discs and other conditions are often to blame. Left untreated, back pain can lead to more significant problems that may require surgical intervention or ongoing treatment. Many people dismiss back pain as a simple discomfort and wait it out, hoping it will eventually pass. But as a possible warning sign of serious health problems such as sciatica, nerve damage or infection, experiencing back pain means you should see your doctor immediately. Even though the cause of back pain is often unknown, ignoring it is never a good idea. Take care not to aggravate it and see your doctor who may refer you to a specialist such as a neurosurgeon.

Bowel cancer is the third most common type of new diagnosed cancer in Australia and will affect around one in 13 people. Ninety-nine per cent of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully if found early. Australia has a robust screening program for people at average or nearaverage risk of bowel cancer, with a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) recommended every two years for people aged between 50 and 74. This screening is very effective and should be an essential part of everyone’s health checks. Unfortunately, when bowel cancer is detected at later stages, there is a significant drop off in survival. Being aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer is also extremely important. If you see blood in your poo, have obvious changes in your bowel habit, experience weight loss that you can’t explain, extreme tiredness for no reason or have a lump or swelling in your abdomen, you should get in contact with your GP. INTERCONNECTED SMOKE ALARMS A MUST Home owners need to be aware of new laws around smoke alarms. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

he Queensland Government has made some critical changes to the rules for smoke alarms in tenanted and owner-occupied properties. The first change is for tenanted properties and comes into effect on January 1. From that date, First National Coastal property manager Heather Palmer says that at the commencement of a new lease or at the time of a renewal, installed alarm units must meet the requirements of the updated smoke alarm legislation. The alarms must be to Australian Standard 3786-2014. Units aged 10 years and older must be replaced with a compliant alarm. These alarms must be installed in every bedroom, and in hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the home or in spaces between bedrooms when there isn’t a hallway. On floors where there are no bedrooms there must be at least one smoke alarm installed in the most likely path used to leave a home. “And they all need to be interconnected,” Ms Palmer says. “In duplexes, they need to have their own

separate alarm systems, not one for the full property under roof.” The alarms must be hard-wired or wireless alarms powered by non-removal 10-year lithium battery, or a combination of both. “The changes are possibly overdue and result from tragic circumstances where a fire has started in one part of the house and if it’s not alarmed all the way

through, occupants can be trapped,” Ms Palmer says. “I think a couple of sad circumstances has made them (the Government) look very, very hard at this. “With the new regulations all alarms have to be interlinked. So, if one goes off, they all go off.” For owner-occupied properties, owners have until January 1, 2027 to make their home compliant. But for investment and owneroccupied properties being sold from January 1, 2022 the property must be compliant prior to settlement of the sales contract. “If your smoke alarm is over 10 years old there will be an issue,” Ms Palmer says. “I am always telling owners that if their smoke alarms aren’t fully functional it might void their insurance policy. “I fully believe an owner has the duty of care to ensure their property is compliant.” Ms Palmer suggests owners should talk to their local electrician about upgrading a property’s smoke alarms, and to double-check the right alarm units are installed in the right locations, and that they are interconnected and working.

Smoke alarms must not be placed: i) within 300mm of a corner of a ceiling and a wall; ii) within 300mm of a light fitting; iii) within 400mm of an airconditioning vent; iv) within 400mm of the blades of a ceiling fan. There are special requirements for stairways, sloping ceilings, and ceilings with exposed beams. These requirements are explained in the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. They will then use the equity on that property over the next three to four years to re-sell and buy into their respective markets. “It’s a unique time.” At Thursday night’s Ray White online auction where Mr Sierp had several properties listed, 10 of the 20 registered bidders for the eight properties up for sale were from interstate. Tasmanians secured two of the six properties that were eventually sold under the hammer. Both 13/99 Birtinya Boulevard in Birtinya and 3704/3 Emporio Place in Maroochydore were sold to these two southern investors. The other key result on the night was 230/21 Innovation Parkway in Birtinya which sold over the reserve by $35,000 and under the hammer for $605,000 to a Victorian looking to relocate to the Coast. “That was about $70,000 over the last sale in the complex,” Mr Sierp said.

t’s not just smart investors from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney who are fired up about the Coast residential property market. Tasmanians are also on the hunt for good Coast value according to Ray White agent Taylor Sierp. This month he has sold four residential properties to Tasmanians. “There’s a lot of talk about net migration driving these buyers to invest on the Coast,” Mr Sierp said. “Combined with the new city centre CBD, the possibility of a light rail is fuelling that fire to that investor market here on the Coast. And there are our high rental yields. “The smart investors are getting out now to cash in. The new investors are making use of those high rental yields.” In the last six months Mr Sierp has noticed that another investor driver has been coming out of the first-home buyer market in Sydney and Melbourne, where properties are becoming unaffordable for buyers between ages 20 and 30. “So, what they are actually doing is buying an
