TOURISM INDUSTRY LEADING THE WAY IN MAKING QUEENSLAND MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR HOLIDAYMAKERS

S
even years after the ill-fated Google Glass, and five years after Snap rolled out Spectacles, another tech giant is trying its hand at internetconnected smart glasses, hoping that this time around things might be different and people will actually wear them. The thing is, it’s Facebook. The company’s previous forays into hardware have been met with lukewarm enthusiasm at best – and it’s not clear if people will wear connected virtual or augmented reality eyewear not meant for gaming. Hoping to give its specs a boost, Facebook is putting its tech in Ray-Bans in a partnership with the European company EssilorLuxottica. On Thursday, the companies unveiled Ray-Ban Stories – connected eyewear with built-in speakers and a microphone for making calls, a companion app that isn’t Facebook, and a charging case. The spectacles cost $299 and are available in the US, UK, Canada, Italy, Ireland and Australia. In a blog post, Facebook said the glasses let people “capture life’s spontaneous moments as they happen from a unique first-person perspective,” as well as listen

Facebook’s new Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses pick up where Google Glass left off. But do we really want to be THAT connected? WORDS: Barbara Ortutay – AAP to music, talk to people and, using the Facebook View app, share photos and videos on social media. Facebook signed a multi-year partnership with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses are the first version of what’s likely to be more wearable gadgets as the social media giant looks for platforms beyond smartphones. Ray-Ban Stories come out of Facebook Reality Labs, which also oversees the Oculus virtual reality headset and the Portal video calling gadget. Anticipating privacy concerns, Facebook said that by default the glasses “collect data that’s needed to make your glasses work and function, like your battery status to alert you when your battery is low, your email address and password for your Facebook login to verify it’s really you when you log into the Facebook View app.” Users can take photos and videos using the glasses, but they can’t post directly to Facebook or any other social media platform. That’s where the separate View app comes in. Convincing social media users that they need to wear an “all-day” connected device on their face may prove an uphill battle, even for Facebook.
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) is looking to make Queensland a more accessible travel destination for anyone wishing to holiday in the Sunshine State with the launch of a new accessibility selfassessment tool for operators. Each year, many travellers face barriers when making their holiday plans. Having a disability such as limited mobility, low hearing, or allergies and intolerances, can make the difference between being able to travel and having to stay at home. QTIC is supporting the tourism industry to improve its accessibility for holidaymakers by launching an exciting new, national program this month. With this new resource, tourism operators can be guided through an online self-assessment module that explains provisions across a range of disability categories. From wheelchair accessibility and aids for vision impairment, to considerations made for travellers on the autism spectrum. The online self-assessment module aims to help tourism businesses increase the accessibility of their holiday programs and accommodation venues. Developed by the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC), in consultation with the leading advocacy body for accessible tourism, TravAbility, the module will help tourism operators identify the accessibility features that their guests need. Encouraging tourism businesses to consider how inclusive their experience offerings are for people living with disability, as well as their carers. When tourism operators complete the module, proceed to assessment, and follow all steps in making their business open to everyone, they will receive an authorised Accessibility badge. A clear identifier to all holidaymakers that the business is inclusive and accessible to everyone. Tourism and Events Queensland chief executive officer, Leanne Coddington says, “This resource will be beneficial for businesses to identify areas of improvement to enhance experiences for all visitors and is an exciting step to creating more opportunities to grow the tourism market in Queensland.

The journey from darkness to light Buderim’s Cindy Scott turned a breast cancer diagnosis weeks out from her wedding into an opportunity for self-discovery and growth – and is now helping others do the same. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
M
ost of us will remember 2020 as the year COVID hit. Buderim businesswoman Cindy Scott remembers it as the year she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram, just weeks out from her wedding. The doctors told her she had a 91 per cent chance of survival if she followed their treatment regime, but all she could think about was the remaining nine per cent. “It was going to be the most amazing year,” she says. “I was getting married, I had my business plan, I was living in paradise at my home in Buderim, I had a great vision for my future.” It wasn’t her first cancer diagnosis, but it was the most serious. The first one was a five-centimetre ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which was found in 2016 and wasn’t aggressive. She had a lumpectomy and as the cancer wasn’t in her lymph nodes, chemotherapy wasn’t suggested and she refused radiation and drug therapy. The second diagnosis was a different story. It was a one-centimetre cluster in Ms Scott’s lymph nodes and this time, she needed a lumpectomy and surgery. This was followed by 13 rounds of chemotherapy and 18 herceptin infusions spanning 18 months. Following the treatment, she had a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction in July this year. “I had a lot of resistance to the double mastectomy,” she says. “Part of me feels like I should have been able to heal myself… A part of me thought, I might just not bother. But when I had genetic testing, I found I have both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. The geneticist that tested me said he had never met anyone who had both. That kind of shook me. “I consulted with three different breast surgeons and I saw a naturopath who specialised in breast cancer. He said, ‘women with your diagnosis don’t make it if they don’t get a double mastectomy’. So I booked it in. It’s such a big thing and I thought, what am I going to look like? There was a bit of vanity going on – I’m only 50. “It was easy, in the end. I had the mastectomy and the reconstruction at the same time, slept for 48 hours, then woke up and thought, right, I’m ready to get back to work. The breast surgeon found more cancer in the breast tissue, so thank god I did have the mastectomy.” Ms Scott was offered radiation and drug therapy once again, but was told she was in

a ‘grey zone’ and could choose to decline. Following her mastectomy, she has gone down an alternative, natural path and this has led to her creating a beautiful cancer journal to help others who are going through a time fraught with great fear, doubt, confusion and uncertainty. A leadership and executive coach who’d run a successful coaching business for 13 years before moving to the Sunshine Coast, Ms Scott was a positive person who found herself blindsided by her second diagnosis. “My wedding had been cancelled, my hair was falling out and I went into a really dark place. I said to my fiancé, ‘now is the perfect time for you to run’ and he said, ‘no, I’m staying’. I was sitting there feeling sorry for myself, looking ugly and bald. Then I thought, what the f**k? I have all these coaching tools I’ve been using for clients for years. It was a lightbulb moment. I thought, of course! Why aren’t I using

some of my positive psychology and coaching to help me out of this? It was a turning point for me. “One of the most confronting things was thinking, why me? Why again? Why is this happening to me? I felt intuitively there was something deeper for me to get; some real soul growth for me. “I started taking accountability for what it was, what the cancer was here to teach me. I see a lot of people saying ‘let’s conquer cancer’, ‘let’s fight it’. I wanted to meet it with compassion and understand myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY what this visitor was here to tell me.” Ms Scott calls 2020 her ‘soul sabbatical year’, where she cut back on work and spent a lot of time asking questions to understand herself better and meditating twice a day to calm her nervous system. “I approached it the second time very differently,” she says. “I sat with it and was far more vulnerable. I let people see me fall apart, I let people see I wasn’t okay and as a result, I got a lot more support.” It was during a Zoom call with a group of likeminded women who run heartcentred businesses that the idea for her book was flagged. “I said no, I’m not an author. I didn’t think the world needed another cancer book. But I had been doing a lot of journalling, which had helped me. So I thought, why don’t I make it a journal? My story is in the book purely to validate the experience of people reading the book. It contains a lot of self-enquiry questions and mindfulness practises so the women reading the book can make it a keepsake.” Ms Scott’s book is called Healing Journal – The Gift of Cancer and is something Ms Scott says she wishes she received upon her own diagnosis. It is a beautifully presented, hardcover journal lovingly written for every woman with cancer and is designed to support healing in body, mind and soul. “Only about one-quarter of the book is my own story,” Ms Scott says. “It contains a
lot of pages for journalling and in the back is a section called My Health Records, which captures information about your medical team, chemo treatments, radiation, a place to put dates and how you’ve responded to different treatments, medications and complementary therapies. For me, I had all these on pieces of paper everywhere so I thought it would be good to keep it all in one place.” Ms Scott launched the book at Bloomhill Cancer Care in Buderim in July and was a guest speaker at the recent breast cancer research fundraiser, High Tea by the Sea. She is donating a percentage of sales to the McGrath Foundation and has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Ms Scott wants to help raise as much money for cancer as possible to “put an end to it for good”. “It’s a lofty statement, but somebody’s got to take the lead on this,” she says. “I don’t know if that’s my role, but I want to do what I can to at the very least, help people understand their journey and take charge. “I feel amazing now. I feel more alive, more purposeful. I love my work and … I feel so connected to what I’m doing and the difference I’m making. I’m getting a lot of great feedback and it feels so beautiful.”

Breast cancer survivor Joanna Atzori says this is the type of event she wished
had existed in 2019 when she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. “Being told you’ve got breast cancer is terrifying because you’re thrown headfirst into a world of unknowns where many of the biggest, ugliest questions can’t be answered by well-meaning healthcare professionals,” Mrs Atzori says. “My oncologists and surgeon could answer practical questions about mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation but what I really needed was to connect with other breast cancer survivors who had already walked in my shoes. As a newly diagnosed person, I wanted to hear about the day-to-day hurdles others faced after breast cancer diagnosis, minus the pink ribbons and ‘fight cancer’ emojis. The Thrive Breast Cancer Event is supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program and event partner, the Buderim Private Hospital Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Program. $70 MILLION FIND THE NEXT NEW INSECT
INTERNATIONAL MOVIES WITH AN EDGE Grab the popcorn because the region’s first Sunshine Coast Film Festival begins on October 6. Across Noosa, Nambour and Kawana, the event will be an opportunity to see local and foreign language films that aren’t straight out of Hollywood. Western Australian produced From Sky to Sea is the opening night film and features ocean photographer Jaimen Hudson as he returns to the water after a life-threatening accident. The festival will also present Chasing Wonders an Australian-international coproduction, which drew standing ovations at the Adelaide Film Festival, featuring an in-person Q&A with producer Anna Vincent. Other highlights include fine new German cinema, such as Grandparenting 101, a restored classic Lola and Australian documentary ABLAZE – straight from the Melbourne Film Festival. A University of the Sunshine Coast insect ecologist will coordinate the Queensland branch of a new research project calling on school students to help identify mystery insect species in their regions. Research Fellow Dr Andy Howe of USC’s Forest Industries Research Centre is helping launch the citizen science project Insect Investigators as part of National Biodiversity Month. The project connects scientists with 50 schools across South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia, where students can document their local insect biodiversity across term one in 2022. The Commonwealth and Queensland governments have reached agreement to further target $70 million from the state and federal governments’ $600-million support package to boost support for Queensland’s tourism and hospitality businesses. Under the agreed package, $30 million will be targeted at supporting Queensland’s iconic tourism attractions and $40 million will be used to provide a second round of grants to employing tourism and hospitality businesses that received an initial grant from the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Hardship Program. PEREGIAN SURF CLUB’S MISSION Spirit of Peregian, Gala Under the Stars fundraiser raised more than $55,000 for the future re-building of Peregian Surf Club. The club has lacked its own income stream since 2014, when the restaurant and bar were closed. Since then, volunteer patrols and nippers have been operated by Noosa Heads SLSC, but plans are in place for the club to regain independence in 2022. “A survey we did in 2018 of the Peregian community showed that 84 per cent of people wanted a traditional family bistro operation at the clubhouse,” Peregian Family and Friends founder Leigh McCready says. “Hospitality operations give surf clubs ongoing income streams, which allow them to buy the important equipment needed to patrol the beach, save lives and give members appropriate facilities. At Peregian, our clubhouse is not fit for purpose and past its use-by date.”

SunnyKids has been gifted a generous boost after $280,000 was raised for the charity at the recent Noosa Mingle with the Mayor Ball in Noosa. SunnyKids general manager Kathleen Hope is overwhelmed with the response and believes this will make an enormous difference to vulnerable people in need of safety and support. “SunnyKids have been working hard to support women and children experiencing violence and harm in the Noosa shire for many years. With limited resources, we have struggled to meet the need in the area and established a waiting list mid-2020 for the first time ever.” The money will be used to increase the Cooroy Family Support Centre to full-time and establish a second site in Noosa providing counselling to those in need.
Queensland Police have launched a new campaign aimed at reducing non-urgent calls to triple zero (000). From September 2020 to August 2021, only 13.67 per cent of calls made to triple zero were classified as urgent or very urgent, with the majority able to be dealt with through the Queensland Police Service’s (QPS) non-urgent reporting service, Policelink. “Our police communication centres across the state take more than 726,000 calls each year, and it was alarming to us that more than 400,000 of those could be dealt with through other, more effective reporting avenues,” Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus says. Before dialling 000, Queenslanders are being asked to “Pause. Think. Search Policelink”. Policelink provides phone and online reporting for non-urgent, non-life-threatening enquiries, such as stolen property. Online reporting is available at police.qld.gov.au/reporting.
NEW FLOOD MAPPING Sunshine Coast community now has access to the region’s updated flood mapping and information thanks to new online mapping. “We can’t prevent floods from happening, but we can take steps to reduce the impact of floods by understanding our flood risk,” councillor Maria Suarez says. “Having access to up-todate flood mapping and information is a key way for us to do that. These finalists faced a panel of judges who examined entrants’ written submissions and conducted face-to-face interviews. The glamorous gala event is highly

The goal is to combine assets with different risk and return profiles. If you diversify across similar investments – which all perform alike during similar economic and market conditions – the benefits of diversification are reduced.
ASSET ALLOCATION
STRATEGIC AND DYNAMIC ASSET ALLOCATION
The first step in developing a suitable investment strategy involves deciding on an appropriate asset allocation. This entails deciding how your investment capital is to be apportioned across different asset classes generally including cash, interest rate securities, shares (domestic and international) and property. Asset allocation is generally accepted as the primary driver of the overall level of risk and return in an investment portfolio, so asset allocation decisions are paramount. By selecting an appropriate asset allocation, an investor should maximise the probability of successful investment outcomes, at a level of risk most suited to their investment objectives. The key to asset allocation is
Strategic asset allocation seeks to provide a long-term policy anchor for a set of investment objectives subject to restrictions and constraints. By its very nature, the strategic allocation for a specific risk profile, say for a balanced investor, varies little over time. While strategic allocation is concerned with the long term, a dynamic asset allocation allows some flexibility from the strict asset allocation over the short term. Dynamic allocation can be a source of incremental returns over a longer time horizon, but it also serves as a risk-control mechanism. That is, dynamic allocation shifts are not just used to seek incremental returns, they can also try to steer investment
away from markets that have an unattractive risk level associated with them in the short term. As an example let’s assume that an investor is a ‘balanced investor’ who has a strategic allocation to equities of 55 per cent of their investment capital. Let’s then assume that equity portfolio outperforms all other asset classes by 20 per cent but still remains the most attractive on a risk weight basis. A strategic asset allocation would require the share portfolio to be reduced as the asset class outperformed, reducing the benefit of the outperformance to the investor. Whereas the dynamic asset allocation may have allowed the equities allocation in the portfolio to increase during the period of outperformance, which would retain the full benefit to the investor. arion Tubbs, a nationally and internationally recognised artist with strong connections to the Sunshine Coast region, has been awarded the $25,000 Sunshine Coast Art Prize. Her award-winning artwork, The Farm (pictured), will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. This year’s judge Renai Grace described the artwork – a constructed image manipulated in detail to read as an underwater landscape – as a standout. A quilt tapestry crafted from a single roll of Sorbent toilet paper took out the Highly Commended prize and has been a talking point throughout the exhibition. Artist Karike Ashworth spent 11 months from the start of the pandemic hand-sewing the patchwork from the fragile sheets of toilet paper. The winner in arguably the most coveted category, People’s Choice, is Alexandra Headland local Amanda Shadforth with
her stunning oil on canvas Between A Rock and A Hard Place 2. The Residency prize was awarded to Brian Robinson for his linocut print Fisherman’s Still Life with Air Jordan 4s. The work recalls his childhood memories, growing up in the Torres Strait, a fisherman’s paradise. We have on our books over 80 volunteers and it makes us feel like we are big family,” she says. “All of us are equal in everything that we do.” The auxiliary first came about in 1979 after locals Dorothy Hamilton and Audrey Martin felt a hospital auxiliary would be an asset to the Caloundra Hospital.

HOSPITAL’S AUXILIARY COMMEMORATES 40 YEARS Charity reflects on the millions of dollars raised and the support provided to Caloundra hospital and its patients. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
C
aloundra Hospital Auxiliary is recognising a milestone anniversary as it looks back on four decades of supporting the area’s hospital. For 40 years the auxiliary has been raising money to purchases vital medical equipment and the provision of other health services. Auxiliary president Claudine Hagan says more than $3.1 million has been donated in that time thanks to the generosity of the community and the
dedication of the many volunteers over the years. “Without the community we would not be here to today,” she says. “Our footprint now extends to 10 clinics within the hospital.” Ms Hagan says in its 40 years, the auxiliary has helped purchase electronic beds, surgical instruments, ophthalmology equipment, children’s furniture and toys for the antenatal clinic, medical scanners, training equipment and items for Dove Palliative
“Kindness is contagious. We have on our books over 80 volunteers” Its first general meeting occurred on December 3, 1979 and on May 24, 1980 the auxiliary held the first of its annual fetes. These remained the main source of income until October 15, 1995, when it hosted the first of the weekly Sunday markets in the hospital grounds. The popular markets continued for 10 years until Caloundra Magistrates Court was built on the site. In 2004, the auxiliary opened a kiosk in the foyer of the hospital until the transformation of Caloundra Hospital into the Caloundra Health Service when the kiosk closed and the Mary Rose Kay Cafe opened.
The auxiliary’s first major purchase was in 1985 when it contributed 50 per cent of the cost of building the Red Cross Next of Kin Cottage for relatives of seriously ill patients. In 1995 the auxiliary purchased a demountable building for palliative care, setting up a Centre for Living to complement the palliative care unit. To raise funds for palliative care, the late Lyla French would sell secondhand goods, which in 1996 became the Bardo’s Bazaar op shop and the “jewel in the auxiliary’s crown”. Ms Hagan says she hopes the auxiliary, which she has been part of for 16 years and president for 11, will continue to benefit the hospital as long as the footprint remains. “I hope for it to continue and to go with the times,” she says. “Nothing that we buy can be transferred to any other hospital. We continue for the benefit of the hospital and the patients and as long as we can stay in the area of the Caloundra hospital, I think everything else will follow though.” The community can continue supporting the auxiliary by donating secondhand goods and supporting the op shop and cafe. ECO-FRIENDLY PLANT POTS A SUSTAINABILITY FIRST A Sunshine Coast eco-giftware company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability by turning used flight safety cards into pots for plants. Maleny-based Sow ‘n Sow has developed its new product, Pop Up Pot, which is the first foldable and waterproof plant pot to enter the market. The origami-style product is made from 100 per cent recycled non-toxic polypropylene and produced via a closed-loop system that recycles postindustrial waste such as manufacturing
offcuts and used consumer products, including flight safety cards, which would otherwise be sent to landfill. Founder Michelle Brady says with plastic waste levels increasing, it is more important than ever to rethink waste and move towards a circular economy. “Closed-loop systems that support a circular economy approach – whereby the waste from existing products is turned into new products that re-enter the local supply chain – is important for a sustainable future,” she says.
“By manufacturing our Pop Up Pots from 100 per cent recycled materials, we’re actively diverting waste from landfill and using it to create new durable and usable consumer products. “This keeps the materials circulating in the loop for longer to maximise and extract as much value from it and minimise its environmental impact. “The material is durable, which means a Pop Up Pot can last a lifetime with adequate care, but at the end of its life it can be placed in the recycling bin to be made into new products with little material degradation or waste creation.” Through the sales of the new Jackie Anderson Pop Up Pot collection, Sow ‘n Sow will divert the equivalent waste of 22,500 plastic 600-milliletre bottles from landfill. The Sunshine Coast’s newest school, which will cost $75 million to build, has been officially named. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the facility, in the fast-growing Aura estate, will be known as Nirimba State Primary School and is on track to open in January 2022. “An official school name is an exciting step forward for these new school communities as they gear up for the first students to walk through the gates next year,” she says. Nirimba State Primary School foundation principal Steven Moore says he is “delighted” with the level of community interest in the new school, which will cater for students from Prep to Year six. “We’ve had fantastic support and interest from prospective parents and carers, the Parent Liaison Committee and our foundation/interim P&C, in choosing the school name, logo design and finalising school uniform designs and colours,” Mr Moore says. “Everything is progressing smoothly and we look forward to commencing enrolments in October.” Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt is also pleased with the investment in education in the region. “We haven’t seen this much education investment into the area in a long time,” he says.

The majority of access is via unlocked toolboxes or unsecured tools. Power tools are the most popular items taken due to their on-sale value. Police recommend the following physical protective measures to assist to safely secure your tools and equipment: • Ensure all tools are physically removed from visible sight. • Ensure tools are securely locked away in a strong and durable box or cage, fitted with a tamper-proof lock and latch. • Ensure toolboxes are securely and strongly anchored or chained to the vehicle or trailer. • Install an anti-theft alarm system to
storage compartments, toolboxes and trailers. • Photograph individual tools and equipment and record serial numbers for identification purposes. • Colour code or engrave equipment. • Park vehicles or trailers in well-lit areas and in places covered by CCTV surveillance systems where possible. Theft from building sites across Queensland costs homeowners and builders vast amounts of money. Building sites can often have large amounts of valuable items such as tools, building materials and white goods or appliances. Police encourage builders and tradies on site to do everything they can to secure their site and tools. At all stages of the building process, neighbours can play an important part by reporting suspicious behaviour. If there are no neighbours, consider hiring temporary CCTV cameras for the site. At lock-up stage the building can become more vulnerable to theft. Ensure all doors and windows have adequate locks fitted and all locks are engaged when the site is unoccupied. High-risk items, such as air-conditioning units and compact hot water services, should be secured in a manner making them difficult to steal. FOUNDATIONS OF A BRILLIANT CAREER A Year 11 student is hitting all the right notes as he composes a path to his musical future. Kairyo Searle from Matthew Flinders Anglican College recently won the 2021 Australian Society for Music Education (ASME) Queensland Young Composers’ Competition in the senior division with his musical composition Supernova. The talented teenager plays in five bands as part of the Flinders’ music program, including the musical band, college band, saxophone ensemble, stage band and wind symphony. Kairyo, who rehearses for more than six hours each week, dedicated Supernova to his fellow wind symphony student musicians and its conductor John Thomas. Mr Thomas says Kairyo is a remarkable young musician with a promising future. “I consider Kairyo to be one of the best musicians I have worked with in my 28 years at the college,” Mr Thomas says. “He possesses an innate sense of musicianship and consistently inspires everyone around him. “I have enjoyed watching his love of composing develop through his analysis of the wind symphony repertoire and believe this has had a
strong influence on his composing.” Kairyo will conduct the premiere of his award-winning composition live at the college, performed by the Flinders Wind Symphony, on October 23. Supernova can be streamed on all music streaming platforms.

THE BUILDING OF COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS It has been 10 years since North Shore Community Centre opened its doors as a space for the community to connect. The $4.5 million facility opened on September 10, 2011 and now more than 100,000 people each year participate in more than 60 classes and groups on offer. Shannon Embery has been the centre manager since the beginning. She says the centre continues to grow and she has thanks the many volunteers who make each day possible. “It has been such a fantastic first 10 years with some truly amazing individuals and groups collaborating in creating
something wonderful together,” Ms Embery says. “When we opened the doors in September 2011, the immediate task at hand for myself, our volunteers and our management committee was to give this brand-new structure some heart. “Slowly but surely through hard work, the centre began to fill with our community’s residents, colourful handprints appeared on our walls, volunteers came forward, connections were made and the atmosphere changed from a building to a warm and thriving community hub that we enjoy today.”

Coastal Pathway update After a couple of months of unforeseen delays, work to complete the Coastal Pathway’s missing link at Warana will soon begin. I’m pleased to advise the completion of a new netball shooting court in Aroona Park. This project was suggested by a young local resident named Amber who wanted an area to practise with her friends. Amber and a couple of the Sunshine Coast Lightning players recently enjoyed shooting the first goals when we unveiled the new court. The existing basketball court also received new surfacing and a multi-goal system.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
Jane Stephens doesn’t mind a good euphemism but says its harsher cousin, the dysphemism can be preferable.

U
S comedian Chelsea Handler once wrote: “I don’t like the word ‘alcoholic’. I like to think of myself as an advanced drinker.” Euphemisms are so handy. They are those softer, round-about ways of speaking that UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill called “terminological inexactitudes”. He clearly had a sense of humour. The key to a good euphemism is that it comes with a bit of a nod and a wink. The trick is to avoid insulting or upsetting with the garishness of a direct observation. For example, there are many euphemisms, with varying degrees of sophistication, for drinking. A person who has been on the sauce can be pot-valiant, have a rosy glow, or be tired and emotional. A few more drinks in and they are three sheets to the wind. The day after the night before they are often a little dusty, suffering from flu-like symptoms or – at the extreme end – busy hugging their porcelain friend. Euphemisms are unpleasant truths wearing diplomatic cologne, as actor and writer Quentin Crisp observed. The primary function of a euphemism
is to camouflage, a word that comes from a French word meaning smoke blown into someone’s eyes. In other words, you can see what is meant, but not too sharply. Among my friends, euphemism’s disagreeable cousin dysphemism is more likely to pepper the conversation. And these can be far preferable. Where euphemism massages and softens our sensibilities, dysphemism gives them a hard poke square in the eyes. Examples of dysphemism include calling a fat person a butterball or an unintelligent one as sharp as a marble. Freedom fighters are terrorists. Cigarettes are cancer sticks. We need more such plain speaking, particularly from politicians. Climate change should be called a climate emergency, for example. The trick with euphemisms and dysphemisms is to know when to use which. The price can be high. Calling your loved one a ball and chain as opposed to your better half will determine whether you find yourself in the dog house or heaven. Navigating it all could be enough to give you an attack of the weepies.

here is a fair bit of debate around the Coast about change, those evil developers and a lot of rhetoric on Facebook about the past, and it seems a lot of folk want to go back there. By coincidence I took a walk in the past last week and uncovered a few answers to things I didn’t even know I was asking. I had to run an errand that brought me near Picnic Point on an absolute cracker of a day, so I decided to hang out where I used to in the ’60s. I parked near the boat ramp, which is about 500 metres from where my nanna’s house used to be and where I spent a fair bit of my childhood. I decided to walk to Chambers Island along the river and I started thinking about what those steps were like in the mid-1960s. Back in the day there were concerns about putting the rock wall in. People were up in arms, even my Dad – but all he was really worried about was where he would tie up his boat as he used to just leave it in the river tied to a tree. So as the rock wall started and moved north he had to keep moving his boat to the next tree that wasn’t knocked down, which was a major inconvenience and change in routine (one
he’d had since the early ’50s), but he managed and eventually years later he had to leave it on the trailer in the backyard. I pondered this as I lumbered along, then I came to a cottonwood tree that had survived the last seven decades and was one of the last trees he used to tie his boat up to, and another memory came flooding back to me. It was at this very tree in about 1967 that I was cleaning Dad’s boat after taking my Victorian cousin fishing and while I was doing that I had thrown a line in with a bit of mullet on it and caught a massive flathead. The cousin wanted to look at it and I reluctantly handed it over and he got a fright and dropped it in the water and it swam away. This is probably why I don’t like Victorians. Although I did tell him when he asked me could he eat green bananas that they were good for him so he probably did it on purpose as he had the runs and a pain in the stomach for days. I plan to go back to that tree and see if it can unravel anything else for me. It is sort of nice that the past and the present can sometimes coexist. Just like Barcaldine, I have my own tree of knowledge.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING Sami Muirhead just loves her oysters, but on a recent trip to the Gold Coast, she discovered that she has her limits.
I
am clearly not too old to learn a good lesson in life when it comes to old-fashioned greed. Oyster-gate just went down at the Gold Coast after I experienced my first all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. I treated this dinner like an Olympic event and talked about it in the lead-up for weeks with excitement. I prayed oysters would be included because I have never had more than half a dozen oysters in one go, and even then it is always for special occasions. So, to think I could scoff as many as I wanted of those slippery little suckers had me in a spin. I hit the buffet with gusto and inhaled both half a dozen natural oysters and half a dozen Kilpatrick. Winning. Back I went to do it all again. Twelve more! Still winning! And still rubbing my greedy belly with joy. I circled back to the seafood for a third time and scoffed another dozen oysters. My kids were looking at me as if I had gone mad. Instead of deciding to stop eating like a pig, I forfeited dessert, and made the huge mistake of going back for a fourth serving of a dozen more oysters. Turns out there really is too much of a good thing. Charlie Chaplin once said,
“Greed has poisoned men’s souls.” I was so sick from eating too much and now I am afraid I will never be able to eat an oyster ever again. My buddy Caroline cannot stomach sauvignon blanc and of course we all know someone who cannot tolerate tequila, rum or gin after one too many one night. Another friend, Soraya, cannot stomach pea and ham soup because she had to eat so much of it as a kid. Lizzy is sworn off donuts for life after winning a donut-eating competition as a little girl. And Pam cannot stand pineapples after working in a pineapple cannery for a fortnight many decades ago. Katrina cannot bear to smell Darrell Lea chocolates after working there for years and overindulging. Elaine’s enemies are pickled onions after eating too many as a kid. And for all of you with your mind in the gutter thinking my husband may have enjoyed the side benefits of me consuming all those oysters, since they are aphrodisiacs, let me just tell you we went back to the hotel room when I very quickly changed into elasticised pants and passed out moaning on the couch. What a catch he landed when he married me!

WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH A DISABILITY Young people with a disability and autism now have an opportunity to undertake valuable workplace experiences through new programs offered at trailblazing local disability College, STEPS Pathways College. The college recently introduced two new programs to help their students learn and practise essential workplace skills in a fun, safe and supported environment. STEPS’ Cafe Training Program and Nursery Program gives students the chance to gain skills and, for some, experience the workplace for the first time. At Cafe on George, a fully functional training cafe, STEPS Pathways College students can learn under a specialised trainer and cafe manager. If a student chooses to undertake the program, they have the chance to learn how to make coffee, create sandwiches, serve customers, take orders, and maintain kitchen hygiene. However, if honing their barista skills doesn’t appeal to students, the STEPS Nursery Program may. Located only metres away from the cafe at STEPS Nursery, it offers students the chance to learn nursery retail skills, propagation, WHS, identifying plants and

weeds, growing and harvesting vegetables and herbs, and garden maintenance. Both programs are available to young adults with a disability and autism, even if they are not already attending the college in any other capacity. STEPS Pathways College CEO, Anne Nioa says both these programs offer young adults with a disability and autism the opportunity to not only expand their skill set, but also make friends in an environment that is safe and supportive. “The life skills that are taught in these two courses are incredibly helpful, so it was essential for us to make them available to every young adult with a disability or autism in our community,” Ms Nioa says. “We’ve seen a real difference in our students when they’ve had the chance to interact and learn in these unique environments.”

I thought I would share, in brief, a conversation I had with a family and their son – we will call him Jack. Jack currently lives at home with his family and wants to move out. Jack, and his family, had a range of questions however most centred around one aspect: what is SIL? And how can it assist Jack? SIL stands for Supported Independent Living and is considered support to assist you in your daily tasks so that you can live as independently as possible, while building your skills and is most commonly used in shared living arrangements. Now, let’s look at an example of what Real Community Service’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) could do for Jack. RCS’s SIL service is centred around Jack’s ability to live independently. We would work with Jack to learn practical skills to better manage his home environment and relationships with his house mates. Our team of staff would work with Jack to ensure he is becoming as independent as possible. We would empower Jack through informed decision making, promote dignity of choice and always encourage Jack to build his independence . We would support Jack to become a young man, living with friends and enjoying all the experiences that brings. FOSTERING A HEALTHY SCHOOL CULTURE In almost every study or article focussing on school improvement, school leadership or student learning that I have read in recent years, the importance of ‘culture’ is highlighted. Indeed, many leadership gurus would suggest that an aspect of leadership that distinguishes this role apart from management or administration is that leaders are concerned about the development of culture in their organisation. It is clearly important. With so many different stakeholders in a school’s daily and strategic operations, developing a school culture can be challenging. Students, staff, parents, alumni and community all desire a school culture that supports them and provides a clear set of guidelines that determine “the way we do things around here”. To my mind, an effective school culture must be built on trust, hope and respect. When a learning community focuses on the intellectual, emotional and physical needs of its students, there will be times when the school culture is challenged and at these moments, the strength of the organisation’s culture is tested. Culture is more than a poster you hang on the wall. Culture is the interaction between people, the words that are spoken, and the way we make others
feel. School is more than just creating an environment where staff and students are happy and comfortable, and parents feel welcome. Author Dr Bobby Moore says, “School culture is about aligning behaviours and practices to the school’s values and beliefs in pursuit of ambitious goals for the students and school.” There will be times when we are forced to balance patience and persistence, listen instead of speak, and sacrifice our own needs for the good of the group if we want a great school culture. Culture has been conceptualised as an organisation’s immune system; something that is meant to protect it from intrusions and to regulate day-to-day functioning. It is worth every moment we spend building a strong and enduring culture.

WHAT’S AHEAD FOR REAL ESTATE? Change is coming for the real estate industry, which is about to be rocked by these significant global trends. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ine mega trends around health and wealth, climate adaption, migration and lifestyle will force significant changes in the real estate industry in the next five or more years. The COVID-19 pandemic and climate change are the key factors pushing the reshaping of the industry’s future, says Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) chief executive officer Anna Neelagama. Sustainability conscious customers looking for green credentials of homes that are more energy efficient and built to withstand severe climate events mean the industry needs to develop better policies so that “housing stock can be improved, and homeowners and homebuyers can be supported to make those choices,” Ms Neelagama explains. She uses the example of her home state of Queensland where she says housing stock has improved to withstand cyclones, flood and fire. The REIA’s future research report also identified the need for the industry to help close the deposit gap for first homebuyers. Ms Neelagama says there is a strong sense in this rising market that home ownership is becoming more unattainable. Optimising health outcomes is another trend that will affect retail and commercial spaces with air quality and social distancing being incorporated in new developments. While not new, more than before people are looking for homes that suit fluidity of work and life. And regional areas such as the Sunshine Coast with good access to hospitals, schools and beaches, and where people can

Other identified trends are consumers wanting more transparency in industry information and accountability when they are buying property, and agents being more cognisant of generational expectations of how long people will stay in their family home. “At this point of the property cycle and with Australia’s ageing population, we would have expected to see a lot more downsizing, but what we are seeing across the board is people choosing to stay in their family home, and I think COVID has really cemented that,” Ms Neelagama says.
