Today it is difficult to imagine a life without internet. No Google, no smartphones, no streaming services. To be honest, it sounds like bliss. How long could I last without these mod cons? I’m not sure. But I do know I was born into a world free of the World Wide Web – and I didn’t know any different. I form part of the Millennial generation. We are said to be optimistic, idealistic and experience-focused. Perhaps these traits come from our childhood days, where afternoons were spent outdoors riding bikes and climbing trees. There was no YouTube or social media calling – two things that set earlier generations apart from the new. Educators and researchers around the world report that this social influence is part of what has shaped Gen Z into the group now known as the empowered generation.

These humans, born between 1995 and 2009, have faced a global pandemic, a war on terror and two financial crashes and are predicted to live longer, stay in education later and work across more careers than any other generation. It is an interesting topic that journalist Gail Forrer investigates in this week’s feature story, page 16. In profile, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw had the chance to speak with Australian music royalty Ian Moss ahead of his performance at the Caloundra Music Festival (story, page 24). The secret pact The AUKUS pact, born in secrecy, will have huge implications for Australia and the region, writes Australian National University’s Patricia A. O’Brien.

ast week it was announced the US, Australia and the UK are forming a security partnership to be known as AUKUS. Dubbed by some as ANZUS 2.0, AUKUS is a trilateral agreement, but one that notably excludes New Zealand. With the UK’s inclusion instead, this agreement shifts the ANZUS Treaty’s Pacific Ocean focus to one that encompasses the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic Oceans too. It is an arrangement with global reach and profound, long-term implications. There is much to unpack from this far-reaching announcement. It was only known publicly that a major announcement was coming less than 24 hours beforehand. In the slick promotional video that preceded remarks by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and finally US President Joe Biden, the fact that the three nations are democracies was touted as a

Department of Defence Secretary Greg Moriarty, Chief of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) General Angus Campbell and Prime Minister Scott Morrison at a press conference defining and unifying feature. Yet the publics of the three nations were kept in the dark about what was afoot, and were instead presented a fait d’accompli. “AUKUS is born”, Morrison declared. Few knew it was even in gestation. The secrecy surrounding AUKUS is troubling given its significance, especially for Australia. These stakes were clearly demarcated in the White House press briefing ahead of the formal leaders’ announcement. AUKUS in its scope and aims: binds decisively Australia to the United States and Great Britain for generations.To further underscore the significance for Australia, the US spokesperson described AUKUS as: the biggest strategic step Australia has taken in generations. The most significant component of AUKUS announced so far is that Australia will acquire nuclear-powered submarines. The US and the UK have shared this nuclear technology in an arrangement dating back to 1958. Over the next 18 months, the US and UK will “support Australia’s desire to acquire nuclear-powered submarines”. These submarines will allow Australia to “deploy for longer periods”, are “quieter”,

“much more capable” and will allow “us to sustain and to improve deterrence across the Indo-Pacific”, the White House said. All three leaders were at pains to stress Australia has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons, though these capabilities will necessarily develop along with the limited AUKUS aims of propulsion. The other elements of AUKUS include enhancing joint capabilities, deeper military interoperability, “new architectures” of engagements between policy officials, and to “spur co-operation across many new and emerging arenas” – cyber, applied AI, quantum technologies and “some undersea capabilities”. The need for this immense shift in Australia’s defence capabilities and the genesis of the AUKUS partnership were not specified. Biden came closest to articulating AUKUS’s intent when he said it will help “better meet the threats of today and tomorrow”. There is no doubt what has sparked this strategic recalibration: the rise of China. In addition to exponentially increasing Australia’s military capabilities, the overarching rationale of AUKUS is to link existing allies and partners together. This will in turn create a global web of

AGENDA security arrangements to combat China’s massive and rapid global expansion. This is why the focus of AUKUS is on the Indo-Pacific. Many questions remain about AUKUS – why did the UK return to the Indo-Pacific arena in this way, having essentially left it, in strategic terms, in the 1950s? According to Johnson’s brief remarks, it joined to impart knowledge about nuclear submarine technology to Australia. This will have a two-fold benefit, he said. It will “preserve security and stability in the Indo-Pacific” while “creating hundreds of highly skilled jobs across the UK”. The UK’s involvement in AUKUS is its most significant enaction of its new Indo-Pacific strategic “tilt” set out in its 2021 defence and foreign policy review. And where does AUKUS leave New Zealand? Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern “welcomed” greater UK and US involvement in the Indo-Pacific region. But beneath statements insisting that AUKUS does not interfere with New Zealand’s existing security arrangements, its exclusion from this security partnership has set it on a singular course. AUKUS’s initial purpose of building Australia a fleet of nuclear-powered subs assures this. As Ardern emphasised, New Zealand’s position in relation to the prohibition of nuclear-powered vessels in our waters remains unchanged. There is no doubt China will react strongly to this news and, given its recent conduct towards Australia, punitively in terms of trade. How Australians respond to the nation’s course without their knowledge or consultation will be interesting to gauge. If 70 years of living with the ANZUS treaty is any indication, reactions will be strong and sharply divided.

Gen Z: the empowered generation Generation Z has experienced a huge amount of change, disruption and privilege in their short lives – which means they know what they want and aren’t afraid to go for it. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

OLO – you only live once. It’s the mantra Warana’s Georgia Herridge lives by. At 26, Ms Herridge has travelled the globe (she’s visited 50 countries and counting), lived out of a single bag for months on end, and survived on dumpster diving. She’s confident, educated and held countless jobs across six different industries. And to those who question her life choices, she says this: “It’s irresponsible to live a mundane life, and by mundane, I mean a life void of adventure. It is such a blessing to have a healthy, able body to do whatever I like.

“There are so many people who would like to do what I can, but don’t have the privilege. My life is a combination of privilege, hard work and courage. “I think adventure is a state of mind and you can have that while holding down a job or living life in a long-term marriage. “Now, as I edge towards my thirties I am more drawn to developing roots within the community.” Ms Herridge’s philosophies are not uncommon when it comes to her generation. A new report by Sydney University’s Brain and Mind Centre asserts Gen Z, also known in colloquial terms as ‘the Zoomers’, have adopted YOLO as their mantra. Born between about 1995 and 2009, they have experienced two economic crashes, a war on terror and, of course, a global pandemic. These experiences, coupled with advancing technology, have created what experts describe as the empowered generation. Today, Australia’s 4.6 million Gen Zs form part of a two billion worldwide population. In this nation they began life when the birth rate was not only declining but hit an all-time low. However, their numbers have changed the course of history and they are now part of record annual birth rate. This is the generation whose lives are socialised, shaped and empowered by an intuitive grasp of social media and digital technology.

“The empowered generation, resonates so much with us,” Ms Herridge tells My Weekly Preview. “Prior to COVID it was so easy to travel and so easy to connect because of technology. Social media has allowed us

to witness life outside of our immediate surroundings. Opportunities are presented to us on this platform. “It has enabled us to live an inspiring life, however that may look.” Yet, right alongside their mastery of the digital world, this group of people are

navigating an unknown path through the global pandemic. For many, this has meant the absence of graduations and celebrations of significant milestones. For others, lockdown has resulted in less physical time at educational institutions, nightclubs and even the chance to experience share-housing. Perhaps, it has prompted a big picture re-assessment of life goals. “COVID-19 has shown us how fragile our existence is and without a healthy climate, without being able to connect with others, we are so fragile,” Ms Herridge says. “These events we have experienced, whether that be a pandemic, or being faced with climate breakdown, reiterates that our time here is very short, and it could change any moment. This is why we believe in living our life our way.” Yet, in the darkness of the pandemic, the Sydney University report implies that a YOLO attitude is encouraging the Gen Zs to move on quickly and find their ‘sweet spot’. For employers, YOLO may equate to a high staff turnover. On the other hand, for employees, YOLO encourages a range of immediate job alternatives. Unlike other generations who may have waited for a mid-life crisis to propel them out of the rat race, towards a search for work/life balance and satisfaction, it appears this generation is willing to take risks early on; as soon as they can they’re myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY getting on with their side hustles or taking a deep dive to make dreams happen, or they’re totally opting out of conventional workforce structures. This has prompted some experts to believe that coming of age during these rocky times has rendered Generation Z more pragmatic and hardworking than the previous generations. They have also been likened to the Silent Generation, those born between the mid-1920s and early 1940, who were moulded by war and the depression. Neil Howe, an American historian, economist and demographer, describes this generation as, “not only overly thrifty, but the most-career focused, and richest generation in our history”. Perhaps this bold combination of traditional and non-traditional values, digital street smarts, gumption to speak out on social justice issues, experience of world-wide hardships together with the YOLO philosophy is enough to provide Generation Z with the perfect mix of ingredients to cook up a brave new world. They are the age of the 21st century and with that has come more material advantages than any other. These material advantages have created an entitled generation, and Gen Zs are happy to admit this. “We are very self-entitled and self-indulgent,” Ms Herridge says. “A lot of my friends, we talk about this. But through our experiences of being able to previously travel freely and do as we wish, we have discovered the power of connection, and the power of supporting others. We may have been self-centred at first but as we grow and learn, we are moving into a new focus and that focus is on community. “Previous generations were taught to be polite, to be over-accommodating of others. It was all about image and how you were portrayed by other people. “My generation has come out and said, we are not going to live our life how others expect us to. Is that such a bad thing?”

GEN Z – FACTS AND FIGURES • According to a survey called The Brave Face of Gen Z, 73% of people of that generation are currently experiencing elevated stress levels due to the pandemic with 57% saying their mental health has worsened. 71% of Gen Zs say the economic fallout of COVID-19 has negatively affected their mental health and wellbeing, followed by travel bans at 68%. These rank ahead of concerns about friends and family being infected with COVID-19 (62%) or themselves being infected (58%). • During a crisis, having access to social media has been seen as both a blessing and a curse for Gen Z. Across all markets, while nearly one quarter (24%) say social media has helped their mental health and wellbeing during COVID-19, more than one third (34%) feel it has had a negative influence. • Of those who believe social media has had a positive impact, 69% attribute this to being able to connect with family and friends. Two in three (66%) feel social media has been a source of distraction to pass time, with 66% citing increased boredom during COVID-19. • Interestingly, of those who feel positively about social media, 59% say this is because it is a source of news for them. However, the influx of negative stories (61%) on social platforms is also the biggest reason Gen Z cite for believing social media access has negatively affected them.

Dr Rachael Sharman, senior lecturer and researcher in psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says that potentially, Gen Z’s environmental knowledge and concern could translate into future government policy making: “I dare say Gen Z will continue the pressure on climate change policy – they belong to a generation that has been attuned to this issue from the outset and have a better understanding of climate science than their predecessors.” Dr Sharman says as a Gen Xer who graduated in the ‘recession we had to have’ era, she can attest to the long-lasting caution this creates in your future mindset. Therefore, she understands how Gen Zs who are experiencing the ramifications of COVID are feeling a “bit burned and probably less likely to take financial risks”. In comparison to other Australian states, Queensland has not experienced long-term lockdown conditions. In fact, 18-year-old audio production and engineering student Noah Ayling has kept up his physical classes and part-time job, leading him to say he’s optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, nearly a thousand kilometres away in a Sydney suburb, 20-year-old media student Lilly-Ann Alexander is having a different experience. She has been in lockdown since mid-July. Since then, she has commenced a TAFE course and attends classes through Zoom. “I can spend up to six to seven hours in front of screen, and that can feel like a long time in front of a screen,” she says. “I wish I could go there [TAFE] and meet friends and talk with people – it would be so much easier.”

Gen Z has grown up with mobile phones, video cameras, apps, tweets, tablets, status updates and cloud computing. It’s the generation that introduced us to Snapchat streaks, Instagram reels, TikTok and Facebook stories. Impacts of COVID One in three Gen Zs want to be the first with innovative technology, but one in eight have either stopped or slowed down social media use in the past 12 months. Family over fashion This generation is more focused on family than fashion and entertainment. Meaning of happiness Ninety-four per cent of those surveyed say staying mentally and physically fit provided a key source of happiness. Consumer choices Choices are more often than not based on businesses who mirror their own values. Meal delivery, ride-hailing and music streaming are favoured preferences. READY FOR A RIDE IN THE YELLOW SUB? Australia’s first hybrid tourist submarine is only weeks away from taking locals and visitors on a unique and breathtaking underwater adventure. Affectionately known as the ‘Yellow Submarine’, the vessel has sailed through its trials and testing and will next month bring passengers closer than ever before to the wonders of Mudjimba (Old Woman) Island. Down Under Submarines founder and owner Andrey Alexeenko has confirmed the multimillion-dollar SUBCAT-30 – based at the De Brett Seafood wharf on Mooloolaba Spit – will be ready to take its first public passengers in October. Ten have already signed on for the first mission. The Mudjimba Island Dive tours between Mooloolaba and Mudjimba, circumnavigating the island aboard the sub, will last an hour and 40 minutes and include a 30 to 35-minute dive time. Sunshine Coast dogs and cats can help save the life of other animals by becoming blood donors. North Coast Veterinary Specialist and Referral Centre (NCVS) is urging local pet owners to assist by allowing their eligible dogs and cats to donate blood. As the only dedicated facility of its kind north of Brisbane, NCVS often treats animals that require urgent blood transfusions due to injury or medical conditions and relies on donations. Dr Naomi Hansen says the process of donating a pet’s blood is similar to humans giving blood. “We sedate the pets … and then we get what’s considered to be a unit of blood from our patient. Then we can keep this unit in the fridge for 28 days.” Check your pet’s eligibility and register at ncvs.net.au.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT A University of the Sunshine Coast psychology academic has developed an app designed to help people cope with stress in healthy ways. Professor of Clinical Psychology Helen Stallman says the My Coping App, which is available in selected app stores, was created to help people become more aware of unpleasant emotions and to use healthy coping strategies to feel better. A randomised trial of 56 people showed that those who used the app for one month experienced significantly less distress and better wellbeing. “This app helps us think of healthy strategies and plan what we can do ahead of time so that when we become upset, it reminds us of the new healthy coping behaviours to use until they become our new habits,” Professor Stallman says.

Sunshine Coast Council has injected a record $5.7 million into lifeguard services this financial year to ensure residents and visitors are kept safe across the region’s beaches. It comes as the official volunteer patrol season, which runs from September to May, kicked off on September 18. “In January alone more than 1.2 million people visited our Sunshine Coast beaches, and lifeguards performed 143 rescues and 770 first-aid actions,” Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “We have more than 20 locations across our Sunshine Coast patrolled by highly skilled lifeguards and lifesavers throughout the season. The message is simple. Play it safe and swim between the red and yellow flags every time you go to the beach.”

Strawberry farmers are doing it tough as a lack of commercial buyers and a bumper season means there’s an oversupply of fruit. So consumers are encouraged to buy up big on strawberries. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

“perfect storm” has meant one of the region’s best strawberry growing seasons has been matched with low prices. And it’s not too late to stock up and support farmers, with Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN) CEO Emma Greenhatch urging shoppers to keep buying or risk losing the local industry. “When there is a high supply, prices tend to drop; that’s a sign you need to buy them more than ever,” she says. “If we’re not supporting and buying when they’re in season, it’s the difference between a grower replanting for next year or going out of business. It’s people’s livelihoods. If we want a viable food and agriculture industry, we need to support locals.” Across Queensland, strawberry prices in major supermarkets have been sitting at about $1.50 a punnet, sometimes as low as 99 cents. “It’s a perfect storm in terms of growers experiencing a labour shortage and COVID impacting hospitality purchases,

The Sunshine Coast is home to many growers. They have also been hit by a COVID-induced labour shortage and a hike in labour costs, resulting in farmers losing about 50 cents per punnet. Queensland Strawberry Growers Association president Adrian Schultz says farmers had been so focused on trying to find pickers ahead of the season they were “blindsided” by the worst impact of the COVID lockdowns. He says many farmers are losing so much money now they cannot even afford to pick the fruit and will have to kill their plants. “We weren’t expecting this because no one had really thought about it,” he says. “We’ve been so focused on our labour issues this year that we’ve not taken into account fruit and vegie shops, cafes, cake shops, bakeries, dessert places, juice bars that would normally be buying aren’t, so we have this artificially built-up supply of strawberries.” Ms Greenhatch suggests residents put a few extra strawberry punnets in the trolley and stock up the freezer ready for summer and says thanks to ideal growing conditions the fruit is “delicious”.

“For consumers, strawberries freeze very well and can be pureed up and frozen or just frozen whole to add to smoothies or desserts,” Ms Greenhatch says. “Don’t just buy one punnet, buy as many as you can fit in your freezer, or give the gift of a strawberry to someone else – they are a very happy fruit.” FAN champions the message of purchasing in-season, local produce and Ms Greenhatch says shoppers should look at where products have come from, and that prices will often reflect supply. “Whether at the farmers markets, local fruit shops or supermarkets, it’s not that hard to support local. In our region, we are very lucky we grow so much, and we need to back our local growers. “Have a look at where [products] are from. For example, grapes are not in season and I saw some the other day in the supermarket and saw they were from overseas. “Usually, low prices mean high supply also, so if you see low prices stock up.” In Queensland, strawberry season runs from May to October, with southern regions supplying produce for the summer months.

Sunshine Coast author and cooking celebrity Kim McCosker says it’s not too late to support farmers and enjoy the end-ofseason strawberries. “They are seasonal right now, they are economical, they are being picked in surrounding suburbs and they are incredibly versatile,” she says. “So do your heart and health a favour and support our local strawberry farmers at the same time.” Kim’s strawberry nice-cream Serves 4 • 300g strawberries, frozen • ¼ cup caster sugar • 1 cup heavy cream Blend altogether and serve as a deliciously creamy soft-serve or freeze for at least three hours for a deliciously creamy, firm ice-cream. Top with a strawberry to serve. Kim’s tip: “When it came to storing strawberries, moisture seems to be the biggest enemy. You want to make sure your berries are completely dry before placing them in the fridge, so I suggest holding off on washing them until you’re ready to eat them or thoroughly drying them first. If you’re pressed for time, simply storing strawberries in their original container is fine, but make sure you discard any that are on the brink of spoiling, as this will help extend their shelf life too.”

RETAILERS HOPING FOR BUSY CHRISTMAS SALES Retailers struggling to keep afloat as a result of the ongoing effects of COVID-19 are being given a glimmer of hope for a busy Christmas trading period. Australian Retailers Association CEO Paul Zahra says discretionary retailers make up to two-thirds of their profits for the year during the festive trading season. Research conducted by the association and Roy Morgan found Australians are set to spend over $11 billion on Christmas presents this year, with 79 per cent saying they plan to spend the same or more than they did last year. “However, the immediate challenges remain around the lockdowns and a lot of pain continues to be felt in parts of the country where stay-at-home orders are in place,” Mr Zahra says. New figures from Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures in-store and online retailing across all forms of payment, showed sales increased by 1.1 per cent in August compared to July, but

were down 2.3 per cent from a year earlier. The biggest annual falls were in clothing retailing, down 15 per cent, and department stores, off 3.5 per cent. However, household goods sales rose 4.5 per cent and food retailing was up 0.2 per cent. The Australian Bureau of Statistics will release retail spending figures for August on September 28. – AAP

Falling on hard times While financial insecurity forced many Australians to dip into their super last year, local charities report an increase in those still needing support this year. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa with AAP.

inancially stressed Australians who dipped into their superannuation early during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic mostly used the money to cover their rent, mortgage, debts or household expenses. A total of $36.4 billion was withdrawn by 3.5 million people who lost work, had their hours cut or received welfare benefits. Australian Institute of Family Studies surveys found about two-thirds of people, or 64 per cent, used at least some of the money for household expenses such as groceries and utilities.

Rent or mortgage payments accounted for 45 per cent of spending and debt repayments 40 per cent. On average, the amount of super accessed across the first and second withdrawals came to $7728 and $7536, respectively. The average total for 1.4 million people who dipped into their super twice was $17,441. The majority of approved requests, or 78 per cent, came from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Funds also went towards home and vehicle maintenance or repairs, renovation costs, clothing and footwear, white goods, helping friends or

family, and paying school or other education fees. Overall, 75 per cent of responses from households that accessed super indicated at least some of it was used to alleviate financial distress. The figures are not particularly surprising and come as My Weekly Preview last week reported that food insecurity has become a frightening reality for many Sunshine Coast families. As previously reported by MWP, statistics from Foodbank reveal a 47 per cent increase in demand for food relief since the start of the pandemic. The hunger relief charity also says the

hardest-hit age group is 18- to 25-yearolds and that 33 per cent of food insecure residents in Queensland had not gone hungry before the pandemic. With rental properties in the region averaging more than $500 per week, many residents who are lucky enough to have a roof over their heads are now struggling to feed themselves and their families, which has resulted in an increased demand for food and other essential items at local service organisations. Coast-based charities Suncoast Christian Care, Gateway Care and Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) have all reported an increase in residents seeking help to put food on the table. MNC community development co-ordinator Mark Ellis says the organisation has reached a point where people are lining up for food before the centre is open. “We are seeing people walking in embarrassed to come in and say ‘can I grab some food because we are paying rent but have got nothing else’,” he says. “Some mornings I have five people waiting for me at the door before I even get to work. I don’t blame them – they’re hungry; they haven’t had a feed in a while.”

NEWS MNC is helping anywhere up to 140 people each week struggling to make ends meet, with many of those having not previously faced financial hardships. “On a Tuesday and Thursday night we are feeding about 50 people each night and during the day we have about 10 people drop in for a feed or food package,” Mr Ellis says. “We are seeing a few new faces that are experiencing homelessness and that is due to a range of things – rentals is one, domestic violence is another. “We are also getting a number of people just ringing for assistance. A lot of people just want to talk too and just get it off their chest.” MNC receives no funding to provide services to the homeless or hungry and Mr Ellis is hoping, just as the community

did with its sleep bus campaign, that residents will donate non-perishable food items in time for an unprecedented busy Christmas. Non-perishable pantry items including tinned ham, vegetables and tuna are welcome but Mr Ellis says they must have a pull ring. Another necessity coming into the warmer months is roll-on sunscreen and insect repellent. “We’re coming into spring and summer, so the mozzies and midges are going to be out in force. It’s the little things we take for granted that these people don’t get.”

SLEEP BUS ON THE WAY A short-term solution for the region’s continuing housing crisis is nearing completion and is expected to be operating on the Sunshine Coast next month. The first of two sleep buses fundraised by Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre (MNC), which will keep up to 20 people off the streets each night, has passed lock-up stage at its Melbourne manufacturing facility and after a coat of paint, final fit-out and finishing touches will begin its journey north. MNC’s Mark Ellis first flagged the idea to fundraise for a sleep bus more than 18 months ago and says after several setbacks due to COVID and border restrictions, he is looking forward to the day he could finally set foot on the bus in person. “I’m looking forward to it getting here,” Mr Ellis says. “The bus is passed lock-up stage and is now being painted. It should be here by the end of October, COVID permitting.” The bus will be parked in Maroochydore from 8pm to 8am each night and sleeps 17 to 20 men in Japanese-style pod beds with a TV, heating, air-conditioning, lights and charging ports, as well as room for pets.

Both busses have been donated by CDC Sunshine Coast, which provides school bus services across the region on behalf of TransLink. “The second bus is sitting ready to go to be converted into a sleep bus,” Mr Ellis adds. “When the first one arrives [in Maroochydore] that one will be taken back down to Victoria.” It is expected the second bus, known as a pink bus that will sleep women and children, will be in operation by early 2022.

Mossy: a man of the people Ian Moss reflects on the early days of his music career, Cold Chisel, the way we consume music today and why he likes being recognised in the street. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

earing new music today is easier than it has ever been. A quick search for a song on your phone or computer can have you lost in a world of listening pleasure in mere seconds. It’s an instant thrill that would have been incomprehensible to a music-mad Ian Moss growing up in Alice Springs in the 1960s. If you wanted a new album, you had to order it at the local record store and it would take four weeks to arrive. Perhaps that’s why he couldn’t care less about the vinyl versus digital debate. “It doesn’t really bother me – they both sound good,” he says. “In the last few years, it has become trendy to get a turntable and start playing vinyl, but I’ve never bothered with that. To me, it’s all about accessibility. I’ve been down those rabbit holes, and I’m not interested. Digital has come a long way and it’s way easier to listen to music on your phone or computer. “It’s such an extraordinary world of accessibility today and I wish YouTube had

been around in the ’60s. You can hear any style of music you want, you can get all the lessons and all the information you want. Back in my day, you’d hear about some music, wander down to the music store and see a catalogue of two books teaching you how to play guitar and read music.” The Cold Chisel guitarist and solo singer-songwriter was always destined to become a rock star, even if Alice Springs was about as far as you could get from the

burgeoning music scene of the ’60s. He started performing for family and friends from the age of four, switched piano for guitar at 11 and was playing in high school bands by the age of 14. “Jimi Hendrix was the first guitarist to blow my mind,” he says. “My first album was Jimi Hendrix Experience Smash Hits when I was about 13. It’s when I really started to appreciate what it was like to play electric. That album had them all

– Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire… I listened to it on the good-old radiogram in my parents’ lounge room. Those things sounded great, even though they had crappy six-inch speakers in them. “At that time, the whole music world changed and suddenly the ’60s went from Yellow Polka Dot Bikini to Bob Dylan, Hendrix and acid rock. I wanted to know about all the guitar players – the Hendrixes, the Eric Claptons, the Jimmy Pages. Apart from Hendrix, the people that really commanded the power and influence were the British guys.” After failing one of his high school years, Mr Moss moved to Adelaide to repeat the year but ended up answering an ad in a shop window for a guitarist. The year was 1973 and it was a decision that would change the course of his life. He joined organist and principal Cold Chisel songwriter Don Walker in forming a band, which would come to include drummer Steve Prestwich, bassist Phil Small and Jimmy Barnes on vocals. But while Cold Chisel would go on to become legends of Aussie pub rock, they were no overnight success. “We had plenty of times of doubt,” Mr Moss says. “It was a long path. Cold Chisel were together for a good five or six years before we found success.” “There was lots of serendipity. I met Don Walker under extraordinary circumstances. You might look back and go, was that destiny or pure luck? He was a bit older than the rest of us, but he was just so solidly dedicated. Very quickly and without any help going to songwriting school and without YouTube, he figured out how to write songs on his own. “We’d built up a good following in Adelaide playing covers and people didn’t like it when we ditched our covers and started playing originals. We decided to

PROFILE present a bunch of new songs and maybe they weren’t up to the mark, but they were a start. It caused a furore in Adelaide town. Some people said ‘good on you’, others said ‘what’s this guy done, he’s wrecking you?’. “We fine-tuned it as we went,” he says. “By ’76 and ’77 we had Khe Sanh and Home and Broken Hearted and were on our way, but we still had a lot of work to do going round and round the country as you had to in those days. Khe Sanh got banned because the lyrics had sex and drug references – only Australian songs got censored. That never happened with songs from overseas acts. At the time, we just soldiered on and kept playing. There was

“I’ll be doing Tucker’s Daughter, Telephone Booth, my versions of a couple of Cold Chisel classics” an incredibly health pub scene – you could play seven nights a week.” While Mr Moss has gone on to create a successful career as a solo artist in the years since Cold Chisel broke up, he was happy to leave the limelight to Jimmy Barnes in the early days, having suffered from anxiety and shyness. But he’s since proven his mettle as a top-notch solo performer with enduring appeal. His vocals appear on some of Cold Chisel’s best-known songs and he’s been quoted as saying the one song he’ll never tire of singing is Bow River, which he wrote about a sheep station in the Northern Territory where his brother had once worked. Widely acknowledged as his signature tune, he’ll be playing it live

when he appears at Caloundra Music Festival on Friday, October 1. “I wouldn’t get out alive if I didn’t play Bow River,” he says. “It’s a solo acoustic show and I’ll be making it as entertaining and recognisable as possible. Don’t be put off by the solo acoustic thing. I’ll have a massive PA system and between my guitar, my trusty stomp box and my attitude, there’s plenty of energy. I’ll be doing Tucker’s Daughter, Telephone Booth, my versions of a couple of Cold Chisel classics, When the War is Over and I’ll sprinkle in songs like If Another Day and Broadway from my studio album.” While Mr Moss lives in Sydney with his partner, jazz singer Margeaux Rolleston, and son Julian, who is currently completing his HSC, he has been able to escape the long-running Sydney lockdown. Having had a number of gigs booked in Queensland for late June and early July, he made a dash across the border before it closed. He’s been staying in Noosaville and says if you see him out and about, he doesn’t mind if you say g’day. He may be an Aussie music legend, but he’s about as unpretentious as they come. “I don’t try and hide or make a big deal of anything” he says. “I’m just another guy in the street. Most people are pretty cool, they’ll say ‘hey mate, what are you doing up here?’. They’re pretty sober and respectful. I prefer to walk amongst everyone else, like I’m a regular person. Which I am. I don’t mind people coming up and having a chat – I’ll talk all day.”

IN SAFE HANDS WITH SUNNYKIDS SunnyKids helps to keep vulnerable women and children safe on the Sunshine Coast, but the charity can’t do it alone. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

hey say it takes a village to raise a child and that could not be truer for a Sunshine Coast organisation that provides social and emotional safety for vulnerable families each and every day. SunnyKids provides emergency accommodation, domestic violence and referral counselling, and partners with health, education and child protection agencies to keep children and women safe. The Sunshine Coast community identifies up to 5000 vulnerable and at-risk children every year and SunnyKids general manger Kathleen Hope says every child deserves the commitment of the entire community behind them and every adult

deserves to know they have the power to change their lives for the better. “I feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of harm in our community and in fact the world,” she tells My Weekly Preview. “It’s incredibly important to me that as a community we don’t just fix what’s happening now but we plan for a future where harm is the exception not the norm. “Domestic violence is so hidden, so misguidedly shameful, so debilitating. Social change must come first, and we all have the power to put a stop to violence.” Next month marks Queensland Sexual Violence Awareness Month, a state-wide campaign to raise community awareness about sexual violence and promote

support options available to people affected by sexual assault and sexual abuse. In the 2019/20 financial year, SunnyKids supported 1386 people on the Sunshine Coast. This was 11 per cent up on the previous year and included 349 adults and 1037 children. The organisation also provided 8970 nights of accommodation for 72 children and 29 women across SunnyKids’ accommodation facilities, including the Cooroy Family Support Centre and Najidah centre. Ms Hope says visiting Najidah was crucial for ‘Emily’ who, due to her involvement with alcohol and a violent partner, lost her four-year-old daughter Daisy to child safety services. “For seven years, Emily’s partner subjected her to financial, verbal and emotional abuse. The abusive lifestyle sucked Emily into a life of alcoholism, and Daisy was removed from the home. “Losing Daisy was the drive she needed to make drastic changes and leave. “The [Najidah] staff supported Emily in obtaining a DVO, setting up weekly visitations with her daughter, and finding appropriate housing that she and her daughter could move to. “Though success is not always straightforward, being in the Najidah refuge gave Emily the courage and support

to leave the lifelong cycle of abuse and achieve personal goals of independence and happiness.” SunnyKids relies solely on funding grants and community support, and Ms Hope encourages businesses and individuals to consider becoming part of the P100 Village. “Our P100 club is a micro philanthropy club of likeminded businesses and individuals who contribute $100 per month to the running costs of the organisation,” she says. “We have so many expenses as a charity that go beyond the services delivered. Our P100 members fill that essential gap. “Because of their support, we can direct child sponsorships straight to the service delivery team.” SunnyKids was also one of the beneficiaries of the inaugural Mingle with the Mayor Ball in Noosa on July 31, which raised around $300,000. LOST MEDALS RETURNED TO WAR HERO’S FAMILY Mooloolaba Police last week reunited lost service medals to the family of war hero William Potter, who was born in 1893. While doing bathroom renovations in her Sunshine Coast home, Judy Fielding found a box of six World War I medals behind a

cupboard. With the assistance of her brother-in-law Roger Wolfe, she conducted her own research to identify the original recipient of the medals. The medals were finally reunited with Joshua Ryan, the grandson of Mr Potter.

STYLIST OPENS SECOND STORE IN BUDERIM A former hairdresser with a passion for fashion and helping others find their style has opened her second clothing store on the Sunshine Coast. Michele O’Flanagan believes “fashion should be fun and make you look and feel fabulous”, and with that in mind Onyx Poppy has expanded with stores in Sippy Downs and now Buderim. While on a hairdressing course in Brisbane, Ms O’Flanagan was introduced to wholesale clothes shopping, sparking the idea to convert a vacant room at her Kuluin salon into a mini clothing store. “As a hairdresser, being passionate about the way I dressed, I was often asked where I brought my clothing from and how to style it. So, it made sense to get some latest trends in the room and work it with the hair and beauty.” After 42 years hairdressing, she decided to sell her salon, transitioning her career and finding a love of styling others. “I did a styling course and graduated with flying colours, then decided I wanted to style ladies in garments to make them feel better about themselves, educate them on body shapes and how to dress for your body shape,” she says. “It gives me so much joy to see ladies

MAROOCHYDORE INTERSECTION WORK TO BEGIN Works to the Maroochy Boulevard and Dalton Drive intersection in Maroochydore will start this month. Sunshine Coast Council division four Councillor Joe Natoli says the intersection upgrade will cater for traffic growth, which is forecast to climb from 35,500 to 40,000 vehicles per weekday over the next 10 years. “The intersection will be reconfigured to include two right-turn lanes from Maroochy Boulevard into Dalton Drive and two left-turn lanes from Dalton Drive into Maroochy Boulevard,” he says. “The upgrade will also retain the on-road cycle lanes and include new

pedestrian crossings. Access to businesses adjacent to the intersection will change to a left turn in, left turn out only arrangement from Dalton Drive to the driveways behind the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre, Lexus of Maroochydore, the Kon-Tiki building and Mercedes-Benz. U-Turn facilities will be available on Sunshine Cove Way and Dalton Drive to allow vehicles to easily change direction as required.” Works will be undertaken at night from September to November, weather and site conditions permitting. LOCAL MUSICIAN FINDS HIS VOICE ON STAGE A 25-year-old Sunshine Coast man who lives with an intellectual disability is hitting all the right notes as he promotes disability awareness through music. Corey Burke is a singer and guitar player with the band The Outsiders, which is entirely comprised of young adults with a disability. As a founding member of the local band, Mr Burke is using his platform to promote the abilities of people with disabilities, and to create an “inclusive place” that people can enjoy music and feel that they belong. “There is nothing better than being up on stage,” the STEPS Pathways

College students says. “You get to take off all of your disability hats and just be you. “You’re not ‘autistic’ anymore, you’re just a musician, like everyone else.” Mr Burke is passionate about sharing information about the everyday reality of disabilities and dispelling myths through his songs, and hopes the message that “disability doesn’t have to hold you back” will be communicated through the band’s music. The band has written several songs including Outsider Blues, a song inspired by the perceived outsider status the group felt.

REFLECTING ON REAL ESTATE

Jane Stephens says we need a better system to make people pay their fines, rather than allowing them to rack up a huge SPER debt.

enalties and punishments are meant to deter, to pay back and to correct. They are meant to make people step up and want to do better. But when fines rack up and payment is delayed, lessons are not learnt and justice is not served. This is the way of things with the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER), the hold-all for debts owed to state and local authorities in Queensland. As of the end of August, Sunshine Coasters owe an astonishing $52.63 million to SPER for unpaid fines, tolls and tickets. They owe $11.2 million for speeding, $2.2 million for drug offence fines and $7.6 million in fines for driving transgressions, and much more besides. It is stunning how many Sunshine Coasters – 25,364 to be exact – still owe their debt to society long after they have been caught doing wrong. SPER is designed as an official enforcer that is meant to pack a punch. SPER’s involvement means the issuing authority washes its hands of you and your debts and has called in the big gun. Don’t pay your council parking ticket on time? It is placed in the hands of SPER

and an extra charge is slapped on. But the enforcer is not enforcing and now the amount owed to SPER statewide is a whopping $1.3 billion, a mighty sum in anyone’s language. It is not uncommon in the magistrate’s courts to hear of offenders who already have SPER debts in excess of $30,000. And by that day’s end they have more. Part of the reason for the spiralling debt is the automatic option to elect to pay it back a sliver at a time. And so many don’t. Only $483 million – less than half of the amount owed statewide – is being managed under a payment arrangement. The rest was just an anvil around the system’s neck. SPER has the capacity to suspend driver’s licences, direct employers and banks to deduct instalments, seize and sell property and ultimately jail debtors. But this rarely happens and the perception is that SPER is a bit of a toothless tiger. The way up and out is long but default referral of debts to SPER should stop. Offenders should pay quickly and without a safety net that is seemingly without end. Punishments and penalties need to be dealt with quickly. It is the only way most of us learn not to transgress again.

eal estate on the Coast has turned into UN-real estate; it is going ballistic. The problem is if you sell, where the hell do you go? I am certainly happy here and feel blessed for having a better half smart enough to command me in all things property. I was reminded how blessed we are the other day on my walk, when I saw a sign on a fence from a family home that had sold recently. It said: “Wurtulla since 1986, thanks for the memories.” I thought it was really nice and it got me thinking. Firstly, some Robinson family property strategies knocked back some skin in the game at Kawana in the early ’60s for 500 pounds with a comment, “Who would live there, bloody sand flies and a swamp.” In the early ’70s, we sold a fully furnished house on a quarter acre 300 metres from Picnic Point for $5000. Then sold 49 acres, house, shed, tractor and all machinery with 11 acres of pineapples for 15K and we threw in the shares to Golden Circle – wow? But in reality both those sales were just circumstances. Thankfully, old mate took over when we moved to Wurtulla in ’84. She bought the

block of land for 17K and the wonderful Blanck family with the help of my footy mates built a split face block house there for 23K – so 40K all up, all supervised and designed by old mate. We had some wonderful years there, one house block and a park off Currimundi Lake. In 1998 we decided to venture across the Nicklin Way near the beach with 220K, our absolute ceiling. She found a place we loved but they wanted 250. The agent said to put an offer and deposit down for 220 and we were a good chance. They told us to bugger off, so old mate got the deposit back and we started looking elsewhere. Weeks later, I was having breakfast and the phone rings. She answers and I hear, “No 220, that’s all we will pay.” I intervene and ask what she’s on about and she tells me they wanted 222 on the house we liked, but she wasn’t budging. Now in our now 37 years of marriage this may be the only time she has ever listened to me when I told her to wake up to herself and pay the two grand. We certainly have had a two grand’s worth and like that family that just sold, we thank Wurtulla for the memories that are still happening with our grandkids.

BEST SONGS OF ALL TIME Sami Muirhead has been debating with her family over the best songs of all time, after Rolling Stone releases a new top 500.

have the ultimate barbecue debate for you, sparked by Rolling Stone magazine releasing an updated list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. There are some massive changes since the list was last released 17 years ago. It’s a minefield asking what the greatest song of all time is, considering we all have passions from pop to punk music. It is a topic close to my heart, given I have worked at a radio station for the past 20 years and I am lucky enough to listen to great music every day. Don’t get me wrong, I am also subjected to terrible music. Yes, I do refer to anything performed by Michael Bolton. Our family has devoured this question of the best song of all time and spent the holidays debating it. My seven-year-old thinks the best song of all time is Blackbird by The Beatles. My 10-year-old daughter says it is Straight Lines by Silverchair. And my eight-yearold son says it is Believer by Imagine Dragons. My husband chimed in with “anything by the Foo Fighters”. All solid and worthy choices. As for me, I am a sucker for Days Like This by Van Morrison. The new cover of it by Busby Marou is my song for summer.

I dare you not to find yourself singing it after you listen to it. But I am also going to throw in a nomination for Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, which did not even make the list this time around. Okay, so I can only fit in the top three songs from the new list, but it’s worth a Google to flick through all 500 songs. Number one on the list is Respect by

Bidders battled over 70 Sunshine Coast properties in the biggest real estate day the Coast has ever seen. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

t was hotter inside than out on Sunday when Ray White’s mammoth The Auction Event offered up 70 Coast properties at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast’s overflowing room of prospective owners and investors. There was spirited bidding for all but a few properties. Those that drew the greatest action and heart rate raising bidding were houses. Many inched higher by just a $1000 while others flew up from the starting price towards the slam of the hammer. A clearance rate of 71.4 per cent was achieved with 50 properties sold under the hammer achieving $42 million in sales. The remaining listed properties are now under negotiation. Auctioneers Dan Sowden and James Goldsworthy’s first five sales set the scene for the rest of the long day. Top of the list was 4 Serenity Circuit, Maroochydore. It took 33 bids for the house to finally sell for $1.68 million. “That was almost $300,000 over the reserve,” Mr Sowden says. The next three houses touched around the $1 million or more mark after between 10 and 21 bids. The first of the apartments – 902/67 Sixth Avenue, Maroochydore – started at $1.7 million and finally closed, after late negotiations, for $2,280 million. Across both houses and apartments, the agents were busy balancing both floor and phone bids. “Up to half the bidding was over the phone with genuine interest from intra-state and interstate buyers,” Mr Sowden says. Hungry phone bidders tried their best to secure 13 Janderra Street in Buderim. With its heated pool, fire pit and pristine reserve backdrop, it finally sold to a Coast resident who had bid on several properties before this one, finally beating the competition to secure his dream family home. “We saw bidders today that registered today for up to eight properties,” Mr Sowden says. “If they missed their first choice, they had backup options available on the same day.” It almost didn’t go all the way for local buyers with a couple from Lennox Heads staying the course over multiple bids to try their best to secure 601/59-75 Mooloolaba Esplanade in Mooloolaba, which ultimately sold to a Coast resident for $1.375 million. “We believe this was the largest real estate day the Coast has ever seen,” Mr Sowden says. “Putting so many properties together in this market, which is quite a strong sellers market, made absolute sense. “It also made sense for buyers who wanted to come to one venue, to one event to buy a property.”
