reasurer Josh Frydenberg has fired another warning shot at state premiers refusing to rule out harsh coronavirus restrictions when vaccination coverage targets are hit. Mr Frydenberg has urged the business community to continue pushing for a nationally agreed reopening plan to be maintained. Western Australia and Queensland have signalled border closures may be used to curb outbreaks even when 70 and 80 per cent of Australia’s over-16 population is fully vaccinated. Mr Frydenberg says state and territory governments would not receive the same levels of lockdown support when the thresholds were met. “You could have the ridiculous situation where somebody in New South Wales could travel to Canada before they could go to Cairns,” he told the Seven Network on Monday. “Somebody in Victoria could travel to Singapore and Bali before they could go to Perth. That would be ridiculous.”

The nation continues to break records for daily infection rates with New South Wales recording another 1218 local cases on Sunday. Six deaths brought the national toll to 999.

“Somebody in NSW could travel to Canada before they could go to Cairns…” Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says the federal government’s focus on the reopening plan was a distraction from problems with the vaccine rollout and quarantine. “This government has not looked at

where the mistakes have been and set about correcting them,” he told ABC radio. “They’ve been too busy with their spin and marketing to worry about that.” Mr Albanese said WA Premier Mark McGowan’s pursuit of eliminating coronavirus cases was not in conflict with the national plan, which allows highly targeted lockdowns. “It does allow for premiers to make decisions, it’s silent when it comes to border closures, but it speaks about minimising baseline restrictions,” he says. He said the federal government was targeting Labor state premiers during a more pressing national coronavirus crisis. Mr Frydenberg says harsh restrictions needed to be relaxed when high vaccination rates were reached because of devastating mental health impacts. “We have seen a record number of teenagers turn up at hospital with mental health issues as a result of anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies.”

Melbourne Year 12 students Lucca and Padua Beaves had their first dose of Astra Zeneca vaccine about a fortnight ago, with Lucca saying he felt a bit sick for two days. The 18-year-old twins are among more than 230,000 or 19 per cent of Australians aged 16–19 who have already lined up for their first COVID jab, while another five per cent have had both. For Lucca and his brother, who are students at McKinnon Secondary College, it’s the second year they’ve been forced to study at home. They’re used to it by now but according to Lucca, “it still sucks”. With both parents working in healthcare, he said getting vaccinated was simply “the right thing to do”. Their mother, Maryanne Turner, said her sons have missed out on seeing friends and developing their independence. “The boys have had two years of VCE in their bedrooms,” she said. People aged 16 to 39 will eligible for the Pfizer jab, while the Therapeutic Goods Administration also recently gave the green light to Pfizer for 12 to 15-year-olds, with bookings to start from September 13. The A-Z jab is not yet approved for people under 18. There are also hopes the Moderna vaccine could become available for younger people in the coming weeks. – AAP

Victorian-era doctors once used leeches to predict the weather. George Merryweather was a Victorian doctor and a fan of poetry. Summer storms are brewing Batten down the hatches – respected forecaster Hayden Walker says the upcoming storm season will hit us harder and earlier than usual, bringing with it extreme weather events that will affect homes, infrastructure and the economy. WORDS: Peter Hall.

his storm season will be the most ferocious and persistent in recent memory, the nation’s most respected long-range forecaster has warned. Hayden Walker, a fourth-generation forecaster and son of world-famous weather expert Lennox Walker, has prepared an exclusive spring and summer preview – and he is not pulling any punches. Mr Walker’s latest analysis follows his expert guide to summer published on sunshinecoastnews.com.au on December 3 last year and cyclone forecast on January 27. Both proved highly accurate. He says this storm season will be the most violent and sustained in several years and residents need to prepare for it. Mr Walker predicts dangerous storms, accompanied by hail and localised flooding, will arrive earlier than usual, during the final week of September. “Extreme weather conditions during the winter period have been predominately confined to the southern parts of Australia, with minimal activity in Queensland and in the north. However, this is all about to change,” he says. “The outlook for spring will accommodate heavy and savage storm activity in southeast Queensland,

commencing in September, particularly the last week of the month. But it won’t just be the spring months bearing the brunt of these weather extremes. “All three months of summer will see storm activity well above the average, compared to previous years. “Not only will there be hail, gale-force winds and associated flooding, these weather extremes will affect infrastructure, emergency services, property owners and the economy due to a loss of produce.” Mr Walker’s predictions are shaped by monitoring solar flares, analysing historical data, and observing planetary relationships and orbital patterns. He says in October and November the intensity of storm activity will increase in southern Queensland, with Mother Nature releasing her fury. He says there will also be an increased frequency of storms compared with previous years. “Storm activity for this period will not only be confined to the coastal and adjacent inland areas, but more widespread throughout the state.” Mr Walker, the Bundaberg-based research director and principal of Walker’s Weather, has a strong association with the Sunshine Coast as his family previously called Crohamhurst

Observatory at Peachester home. He and his research team are engaged by insurance organisations, farmers and construction and mining companies to predict extreme weather events that can make or break industries. Mr Walker predicts the main areas affected will be in the Gulf of Carpentaria and Western Australia. “There will be two cyclones in the Gulf, one in January and one in February,” he says. “I have one forming off the north Queensland coast in February, with a low probability of crossing the coast, and most probably heading east to the South Pacific islands. “There will be another affecting the Northern Territory in April and three cyclones in WA – two in January and one in February.’ “Cyclone activity will be prominent in the South Pacific islands.” Mr Walker says the end of September and October will bring decent falls to a number of areas throughout the state with further rainfall indicated during November and December (some areas to a lesser extent). “The start of 2022 will see heavy rain across the top end of Australia and this will be repeated during February.

Rainfall is also indicated at a number of inland areas,” he says. Mr Walker uses his knowledge of the sun, combined with patterns of sunspot activity and energy flow, to predict both the short- and long-term future of weather worldwide, specialising in long-range forecasts. The sun has an ever-changing surface that accommodates large sunspots emitting solar radiation or magnetic fields, which react with the Earth’s magnetic field. This causes a reaction with the poles, thus producing the Northern Lights. An increase in sunspot activity, especially during a solar maximum, gives rise to weather extremes, such as flooding, cyclones and storms. The reverse happens during a solar minimum, or a dormant period, when we experience droughts. Mr Walker has been successful in predicting many major weather events – such as the cyclones Larry, Yasi, Marcia and Olwyn, flooding to the New South Wales coast during April 2015 and recent storm activity in Queensland and New South Wales. He was the only long-range weather forecaster to predict Cyclone Oswald that brought heavy rains to New South Wales and Queensland, especially the floods to Bundaberg. myweeklypreview.com.au

Prepare your home for a storm 1. GENERAL MAINTENANCE • Check the condition of the roof and repair loose tiles, eaves and screws. • Clean gutters and downpipes so water can drain away as quickly as possible. • Trim trees and overhanging branches. • Secure loose items that could cause damage if blown around in high winds (such as garden furniture and toys).

2. GENERAL PREPARATIONS • Ensure your home, contents and car insurance is current and covers your assets adequately – check your policy includes debris clean-up and disposal. • Identify which room is the strongest part of the house, in case you need to shelter in your home during a severe storm or cyclone. Usually this would be the smallest room in the house, with the least windows. • Identify where and how to turn off the mains supply for water, power and gas. • Buy emergency essentials to have on hand, such as containers to store

Always ensure:

drinking water, a spare fuel supply for use in your vehicle (ensure you store safely), wide masking tape for windows. hessian bags and sand for sandbagging indoor drains to prevent sewerage backwash from flooding.

5. WHEN SEVERE WEATHER WARNINGS ARE ISSUED:

• Your pet has access to plenty of food and fresh water.

• Disconnect electrical appliances and all external television and radio aerials.

• Your pet has shelter and bedding.

• Turn off electricity and gas main supplies if instructed by emergency authorities.

• All animals under your care can be properly and easily identified.

3. IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOODPRONE AREA:

• Secure outdoor furniture and other garden items.

• Store all poisons well above ground level.

• Fill buckets and bath with clean water in case of interruptions to main supply.

• You have telephone numbers for your veterinarian or animal welfare agency included in your household emergency kit.

• Close windows with shutters, or use strong tape in criss-crossing pattern and draw curtains.

• You never leave an animal tied up or chained without shelter and bedding.

• Park vehicles under cover, away from trees, powerlines and waterways.

• You never leave an animal in a motor vehicle.

• If you cannot access undercover shelter for your vehicles, secure with firmly tied blankets to minimise hail damage.

The Pet Emergency Plan is for your household pets. If you have more than two pets, or are looking after your neighbours’ pets, complete a second plan.

• Identify which indoor items you will need to raise or empty if flooding threatens your home. • Also consider alternatives to carpet, relocating electrical sockets and power points to well above floor level.

4. IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA PRONE TO CYCLONES OR SEVERE STORMS: • Fit windows with shutters or metal screens for added protection during high winds.

• Check all household members are safe and are in the strongest room in the house.

• Arrange a professional builder to check your building and identify measures to increase its structural security to withstand high winds.

• Take your emergency kit. • Tune in and listen to your local radio station for updates in the event and further warnings and safety messages.

Supporting veterans’ families Beckie MacKinney-Clohesy’s world came crashing down when her husband died while serving in Afghanistan, but Legacy was there to help. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa. Jared MacKinney, Beckie MacKinney-Clohesy and their daughter Annabell

ith the current turmoil in Afghanistan heightening emotions for many service personnel and their families, one Sunshine Coast family is remembering a loving husband and father 10 years on from his tragic death. Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney was operating as a mentor to the Afghan National Army during a partnered patrol in the Deh Rawud region of Afghanistan when he was shot and killed by insurgents on August 24, 2010. His wife, Beckie MacKinney-Clohesy,

who was pregnant at the time of his death, recalls how her life came crashing down. “Life was very busy and full-on – I had an almost three-year-old, Annabell, and was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with Noah,” Ms MacKinney-Clohesy says. “Annabell was the apple of her daddy’s eye and was always in mischief.” Ms MacKinney-Clohesy went into labour on the day of her husband’s funeral. “At 5.45am the morning of Jared’s funeral, my waters broke,” she says. “I was determined to give my husband the farewell that he deserved and insisted

I would be fine to see the funeral out. “From when my waters broke, I was having contractions and this became more intense as the day went on. “I left the funeral with a police escort and arrived at the hospital just before 1pm. Noah was born just after 3pm.” LCPL MacKinney joined the Australian Defence Force in September 2002 and went straight into Infantry Core at 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment at the Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera. “Jared was a Private for many years until he was promoted to Lance Corporal

in country on his last tour of Afghanistan in 2010,” Ms MacKinney-Clohesy says. “Jared completed many courses while he was in the Infantry Corps. Two of his four deployments, he was a driver of a Bushmaster.” After her husband’s death and with two young children, Ms MacKinneyClohesy did not know who to turn to until Legacy stepped in to provide support. Legacy was established in 1923 and founded on a promise made from one soldier to another to look after the wife and children should something happen. Today, Legacy supports 43,000 individuals and families across Australia, supported by more than 3600 volunteer members known as Legatees. “In the beginning, I was on autopilot and did everything and anything I needed and could do to make everything as it should be for Jared and my children. “As time went on, life got a lot harder as I was 25 years old, a widow and with a three-year-old and a newborn. “I didn’t call on Legacy for the first little while, as I was under the assumption that there were a lot more people out there that were in greater need.” Eventually the family was introduced to Legatee Tony Ralph, who quickly became an integral part of their lives. “The first time Annabell and I met

A cheesy adventure for artist After spotting a gap in the market and following her instincts, artist and designer Helen Shadforth has become a cheese entrepreneur and business success story. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ow does an artist end up in the cheese trade? If you think about it, the two aren’t really that far removed. Neither are a necessity for survival, but many would argue life wouldn’t be worth living without them. It’s the finer things in life that we often crave. It’s almost like therapy. It was six years ago that Helen Shadforth came up with the idea for her business, Cheese Therapy, together with her partner Sam Penny. They source and sends artisanal cheese around the country and the business has become a local success story. “Neither Sam or I came from the cheese world,” Ms Shadforth says. “I’m an artist and graphic designer by trade. When we were on holidays in Vanuatu, we found the supermarkets there were very French. You could buy beautiful French cheese and we thought, why is it that we get this beautiful produce here so easily, but back home it’s not easy to get unless you’re in one of the major cities. When we came

back to Australia, we searched for it and found here on the Sunshine Coast, let alone anywhere more regional, it was hard to get beautiful artisanal produce. We decided to figure out how to put cheese in a box and send it to people’s homes.” With a 20-year background in graphic design, it felt natural for Ms Shadforth to create the Cheese Therapy brand. Mr Penny’s background is in marketing, so they made a great team. They are now sending cheese to people in every state and territory in Australia and have become Australia’s largest independent artisan cheese retailer. “We have about 20 of Australia’s best artisan cheese-makers,” she says. “They are all small, family-run businesses. We also have a pack called Globetrotter, where we source cheese from international makers. We’ve developed special packing that

keeps the cheeses cold for up to five days.” Ms Shadforth and Mr Penny live in Buderim and have four children between them. They spend most of their time together and Ms Shadforth has to carve out some me time to ensure she still paints occasionally. Her artwork is whimsical and colourful, drawing on tribal art for inspiration to create images of animals, flora and spirits. “The business is full time but every now and then, if my week is a little quiet, I’ll paint at home. I have a beautiful studio at home; it’s my little sanctuary I can go to. I definitely have my moments where I get a bit frustrated because I haven’t been able to paint. “Painting and art is my passion. It’s my way of creating something that comes from within me that I love. It’s my outlet. For me it’s about balance. The last 12

months have been super-busy with Cheese Therapy, but we are now getting such a great team together and the business is going so well at the moment. It’s giving me a chance to be able to have days where I say, this is a day where I’m painting. You can still ring me if you need me, but I plan days where I’m artist Helen, not Cheese Therapy Helen.” Ms Shadforth likes to keep fit with running, yoga and Pilates and is also studying Reiki. Add that to the family and business and it’s a busy life. “You should see my house!” she laughs. “It’s like a bomb site. “Sam and I are together all the time and we spend pretty much every night talking work,” she says. “But it’s not talking about work in a way that’s a chore. We’re both really passionate about it and both really excited. After five years of doing this, we’re not bored of it at all. “We don’t necessarily see it as work; it’s part of our lives.” Ms Shadforth understands you don’t need to have all the skills to build a great business. Rather, you need to know the right questions to ask and the right people to surround yourself with to create your own success story. She will share her business tips for female entrepreneurs at the Female Founder Summit on Friday, October 29, presented by Groei Growth Education Institute. The summit will give business owners the opportunity to learn from peers, industry experts and female founders. lovable Sunshine Coast netball fan recognisable for his booming voice and impressive beard is doing his part to help young families living with a cancer diagnosis. After years of growing his beard, Jason McIntyre recently shaved it off to raise money for Australian charity Mummy’s Wish, which has been supporting Sunshine Coast Lightning assistant coach Christine Voge after a cancer diagnosis last year. Mummy’s Wish provides practical support for mothers diagnosed with cancer who have children aged under 13 years.

The charity has helped Ms Voge explain her lymphoma diagnosis and extended hospital stays to her two primary schoolaged children. “One of the biggest challenges has been explaining to my young sons what cancer is and why is mum sick and in hospital for so long,” she says. “Mummy’s Wish supplied me with resources to start discussion and read information in an age-appropriate format. “Additionally, with the burden of long stays in hospital and added COVID-19 restrictions, the organisation sent me two lovely teddy bears for my sons where I could record a personalised voice message that plays with a hug of the teddy. Ms Voge says the charity has helped her

realise how much extra support patients and families need during treatment and adapting to life with cancer. Mummy’s Wish has supported more than 5000 families since 2007 and is currently able to support just one in five families due to limited funds. The charity’s goal is to deliver its service to every mum who receives a cancer diagnosis while caring for young children by 2025. Wanting to help the charity that is helping one of Lightning’s own, Mr McIntyre, who was named Lightning’s inaugural Fan of the Year, didn’t hesitate to help after a bit of a push from his wife Vikki. “Let’s be clear, my wife wants my beard

to go and up until now, I did not entirely share her view,” he says. “I have grown and nurtured this beard for years and have been shocked, and impressed, at how the beard has become a part of my identity. “But when Vikki explained the cause, I didn’t hesitate. “Mummy’s Wish do such great things supporting mothers of young children, including supporting Chris [who is] such an important part of the Lightning family, through what continues to be a challenging time.” Mr McIntyre shaved the beard off at a Lightning community event in Cotton Tree on September 1 where members and fans had to opportunity to celebrate the 2021 netball season. Ms Voge is grateful for the ongoing love and support from the Lightning family and wider community, and Mr McIntyre for his fundraising efforts. “The ongoing support from Sunshine Coast Lightning with practical and emotional support has been unbelievable,” she says. “This fundraising opportunity will be such a great contribution to Mummy’s Wish to help the significant numbers of mums with cancer.”

COVID’S IMPACT ON INVESTING We may all be sick of hearing news reports about COVID-19, but it is important to reassess the situation from an investment perspective. The current wave of COVID-19 affecting Australia, particularly New South Wales, is different in many ways. This time last year, for example, vaccines were not available, and businesses, governments and households were unprepared and had to adapt to snap lockdowns for the first time. We expect the economy and COVID-19 losers from last year can better manage the downturn this time around. On the other hand, COVID-19 winners, particularly within discretionary retailing, may not be as big a beneficiary of further COVID-19 ‘waves’. An early beneficiary of the pandemic were retailers, particularly those selling household goods (including electronics, hardware and home furnishings), helped by work-from-home demand, along with home entertainment and DIY jobs, and online retailers (increased click and collect, no contact) and, to a lesser extent, grocery retailing (helped by panic buying). Spending in these areas was also helped by large government stimulus payments and a rotation of spending away from travel, restaurants

and outdoor entertainment during the pandemic. Such high sales growth for these businesses will be difficult to sustain, and further waves of COVID-19 and successive lockdowns are unlikely to be as beneficial due to these factors: • Tough comparisons – Companies already have a high hurdle rate, as they cycle some of the elevated comparable numbers helped by the pandemic last year. • Spending that won’t be repeated – Outside grocery or food retailing, most of the boost in spending last year reflects a pull-forward of spending, for example, setting up an office space, which is unlikely to be repeated to the same degree in the future. • Lockdowns are narrower – Last year saw lockdowns applied nationally, but this time the lockdowns appear to be largely contained to New South Wales and Victoria. This affords a greater degree of reopening than before and will see some leakage of spending back into areas such as restaurants and outdoor entertainment. We see the combination of cycling high rates of growth and current restrictions on trading due to COVID-19related lockdowns as providing an opportunity to take profits in consumer discretionary stocks. We expect the household goods sector to face particularly challenging conditions in the first half of fiscal 2022, given the strong sales growth recorded last year. Property Manager? Landlord? Artist? This one’s for you. Creative Spaces Sunshine Coast is a Sunshine Coast Council initiative to develop a dedicated network of places and spaces for artists to connect, create and collaborate.

ouncil advocates and facilitates access to affordable spaces through Creative Spaces, for making, exhibiting, performing and supporting artists and creative practitioners to find spaces. The program also encourages the broader community to engage with the arts, by promoting, uncovering and developing new creative spaces, residency programs and unlocking under-utilised spaces for creative activation. Listing Space and finding Space is free on the national creativespaces.net.au website. There is also an artist database where you can promote your own practice nationally. Council is encouraging property owners,

managers, real estate agents, community groups, businesses and anyone who’s a keen supporter of the arts with a spare space to list now. Spaces could be anything from garden sheds, empty shops, warehouses, theatres or barns. There is nothing too unusual (believe us, these artists have worked in everything from jail cells to lighthouses to abandoned bus terminals). Artists might stay an hour, a week, a month or more and landlords can specify what the space can be used for – a place to write, rehearse, exhibit or to create a masterpiece. Additionally, over the course of the year, council supports more than 15 artists across

five locations through Creative Spaces residencies, where artists experiment with ideas and are mentored through the exciting Space Travel program with locally and nationally recognised arts industry mentors. Current residency spaces include Sub Tropic Studio, Caloundra, the Arts and Ecology Centre, Tanawha, 2nd Space, Nambour, Caloundra Lighthouse in Caloundra and the Old Lock Up, Maroochydore. This support can range from access to pension advocacy, counselling, housing, medical and social support or educational and recreational requirements. Here on the Sunshine Coast, Legacy has around 40 volunteers who support nearly 900 Legacy clients, including children and people with a disability. CHARITY OVERWHELMED BY COMMUNITY SUPPORT Bloomhill asked for help and the Sunshine Coast community delivered, donating more than $135,000 to the charity. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

he Sunshine Coast community has dug deep, helping a local charity raise more than $100,000 for its biggest annual campaign. Be There for Bloomhill, which ran across June, has generated $135,256 for Bloomhill Cancer Care thanks to the generosity of local businesses, sponsors and residents. The charity provides care, and emotional and physical support for people who are living with cancer and their families. Bloomhill Cancer Care CEO Christopher John says the charity

has been blown away by the support. “We have been completely overwhelmed at the community support for our Be There for Bloomhill campaign in June,” Mr John says. “We would like to sincerely thank every single person that contributed to this incredible amount of funds raised. “From local businesses that have fundraised for us, to those that attended or supported Raelene Boyle’s 70th birthday and those that made a donation straight to our appeal – you have all made a difference. “What an incredible achievement

together we have reached to ensure we can provide personalised support to those touched by cancer.” As part of the campaign, three locals affected by cancer shared their emotional stories, including Joe Surace who was diagnosed with a rare form of the disease. “When I was diagnosed seven years ago with cancer I was only 40 years old, and by all accounts, was nearly dead,” he says. “It was May 2014 and my organs were in shutdown because the rare cancer I had carried since birth had been so good at hiding, it was very advanced when it was spotted. “I had been unwell since getting glandular fever in 2012; I just kept getting sick and needing time off work. Then I had back pain that got so bad it kept me awake at night, in tears, and I was a zombie in the day.” Eventually, Mr Surace was diagnosed with embryonic germ cell metastatic carcinoma, a rare cancer that formed when he was an embryo. “It turns out it was cancer that started in my right testicle, spread through my lymph nodes and took over most of my liver,” he says. “When I was diagnosed, there was a 70 per cent chance chemotherapy would kill me. “I needed surgery straight away, but my body wouldn’t have coped, so I went straight into an aggressive chemo treatment. “It was so risky they started me in the intensive care unit. I spent 133 days in a row in a hospital bed.” Remarkably Mr Surace pulled through and after surgery in 2015 to remove his lymph nodes and a testicle,

he has been cancer free for five years. He has since used Bloomhill’s services and recently joined Bloomhill staff as events lead, but it was serendipitous how Mr Surace found Bloomhill in the first place. He was asked for input on the new oncology unit at Sunshine Coast University Hospital based on his time at Nambour General Hospital, and the session was held at Bloomhill’s Buderim property. “I really wanted to know more about what it did, and soon I was going there often,” he says. “I got massage, acupuncture, yoga once a week. I had counselling. I learned about so many things through the workshops they held. “I was still really weak. I needed help getting down the few stairs, and a chair at yoga. A huge turning point in my rehabilitation was seeing the exercise physiologist. “After about six months I noticed a big difference, and I kept on with it for about two years.” Mr Surace says he is also grateful to the help that was extended to his wife, who also received counselling and massages. Mr Scott took up golf at age 70 and is popular at the Glenview Par 3 golf course where he has been a regular competition player, and still wins his share of prizes. “He walks for the nine-hole competition, and is an inspiration to all members, some of whom need to use golf carts,” fellow golfer Richard Scott, who coincidentally shares the same name but is of no relation, says. Born in Muttaburra, Queensland, Mr Scott became a stockman before joining

the Australian Air Force (later RAAF), flying as a tail gunner in Europe during World War II. He and his wife Muriel were married for 70 years when she passed away in 2013. They have four children, 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great grandchildren, with another on the way. “Mick also joins his many friends, all younger, for a few drinks on most afternoons at the Caloundra Power Boat Club,” Mr Scott says. “He claims ‘you need to keep the fluids up’.” On the Sunshine Coast since 1946, Mr Scott has lived in Eudlo, Landsborough and now Golden Beach.

Each month I give an overview of the outcomes of the Ordinary Meeting of Council on my Facebook page – one notable item from last month was the decision to roll out an opt-out garden waste bin service to all households from July 2022. This decision was informed by feedback from a survey earlier in the year, asking if residents would use a garden waste or a food organics and

garden organics (FOGO) bin service. From 7500 responses, 84 per cent of respondents said council should provide a service to reduce organic waste in landfill and reuse it. The expanded garden waste service will divert garden clippings, weeds and leaves from landfill and is the first step to transitioning to a FOGO service, which will prevent one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions being released into the atmosphere over the next 30 to 50 years. This change will mean the current charge will decrease, due to economies of scale. It is likely that the State Levy rebate will be removed in the future, which would have resulted in approximately $60 charge to residents for no new service at all! So, in the long run there will be financial savings for existing and future users and a big reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Some properties will be exempt, with the conditions of exemption yet to be finalised. Council will keep residents informed of planned changes to waste collection which will start in July 2022. WHAT HAPPENS TO LOST OR STOLEN PROPERTY? Police come into possession of considerable property items on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s property that has been lost and then handed into police as ‘found’ property. Sometimes it is property we have seized as part of an investigation. Generally, these items can be grouped into a few types: lost property, found property, seized (as evidence) items and impounded vehicles. We work very hard to locate the lawful owners of property so it can be returned, or to tell the owner that the item must be forfeited to the Crown and disposed of. Sometimes, even after all our efforts, we cannot find the lawful owner for lost/ found property and as a final step we issue a public notice stating that, if not claimed, the property will be disposed in a way the Commissioner considers appropriate.

We can only store these items for a limited time if the owner cannot be found. You can help us return lost or stolen items to you by engraving your goods with your driver’s licence and/or keeping photos in case they are lost or stolen. Drinking in public One of the questions we get asked a lot as the weather starts to warm up is: if you are over 18 years, can you drink alcohol in a public place in Queensland? The simple answer is no, you can’t drink alcohol in a public place in Queensland, unless the area is a licensed premises or is declared as a wet area (for example, a concert). SURF LIFESAVING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED Lifesavers from across the region have been recognised at the annual Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast Branch Awards. Eliza Dreves (pictured) from Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC was named Volunteer of the Year for her dedication to the club. During the past season Ms Dreves has actively patrolled while holding a range of roles at the club, including director on the board, youth development officer, vice club captain and Surf Woman of the Year entrant. STUDENTS CREATE HIGH-TECH NATURE EXPERIENCE Caloundra State High School students have created a wildflower world with a difference at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden. The augmented reality experience is on until September 10 and offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in nature while learning about wildflowers through the

magic of technology. The self-guided tour is the outcome of a Creative Hack Day as part of the 2019 Immerse Conference, where the Caloundra IT students created the winning concept. Young writers recognised Mooloolaba Lions Club has announced this year’s school writing challenge winners after 209 entries from eight local schools. Since the inaugural challenge in 2013, the program has provided primary-age students with an opportunity to enhance their story writing skills. The theme for this year was Peace, to coincide the UN declaring 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. It was a Mooloolaba State School student Naomi Werther’s story about a peaceful outcome resulting from standing up to schoolyard bullies that won. The Fishermans Road Markets is Mooloolaba Lions’ major fundraiser and helped purchase 14 $50 book vouchers for the finalists, and $100 to each school for their libraries.

Cathy Wright has been named president of the Rotary Club of Mooloolaba, taking over from Graham Lukins and Geoffrey Hopkins at a changeover dinner. The club enjoyed success at the Garden Expo in Nambour, manning the car parking with 37 volunteers who put in more than 326 hours. The Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health happens each October. This year’s event is at Mooloolaba on October 31 with MP Fiona Simpson one of the honorary Rotarians who supports the walk to raise funds for mental health research. As we start the summer beach season, I would like to draw your attention to the many drownings in the surf last season, all of whom were swimming outside the flags. I like body surfing and try to stay in the flags. However, after being targeted by body board riders, who think it’s great fun to barge their fast-moving boards into older women as they make their way to shore, I feel hesitant to go anywhere near body boarders. Maybe there should be a flagged section not only for the surfboard riders, but also for the body board riders?

At the Glasgow COP26 (Climate Change Conference of the Parties) in November, Australia will be asked to report on what we are doing to address the increasing threat of climate change. Prime Minister Morrison insists we will meet our pitifully low targets due to his government’s creative accounting on emissions. It is obvious that we will not. The historic Paris Agreement is now held to be inadequate to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and time is running out. The rest of the world, especially the leading nations are moving forward with reducing carbon emissions sooner in the face of the dire consequences if the world does not act. Mr. Morrison’s shameless greenwashing of his government’s inaction will be exposed at the Glasgow summit and our nation will become known as international pariahs for what is an existential threat to humanity.

Jane Stephens says the digital age and copious texting has brought with it a new disregard for correct spelling – but does it really matter?

The recently-released NAPLAN results, the first for two years, show school kids’ literacy skills have not diminished through the pandemic – but they haven’t improved. But does it even matter? Are we clinging to a golden time of literacy and a stuffy, passé communication skill? This is the age when kids ROFL and LOL at those sticklers for the old-school ways. We have Siri, Alexa and Google on hand to type for us anyway. Auto-correct can fix (and generate) errors. And people kinda, sorta know what we mean when we have a stab at spelling anyway, so why fuss about it? Standards are sliding, even at the highest echelons of learning. It was reported earlier this year that the University of Hull in the UK had adjusted its sails, believing requiring good written and spoken English could be seen as “elite”. The uni’s position was that it should remove “barriers to learning” for students of all backgrounds and it was concerned that marking students down for poor spelling, grammar and punctuation in exams could

be seen as “homogenous, North European, white and male”. Good grief. I think people should be able to txt n take short cuts 2 there harts content. But there are times when spelling does matter, and young people need to be skilled enough to participate in that world when required. Spelling matters when they are applying for a job or performing a duty in a professional capacity. It matters when they are filling in official forms or answering a formal email. It matters because having the same standards means what is written can be understood across generations. It matters because it shows care has been taken by the writer and respect has been given to the reader. Most people will agree that poor spelling is unprofessional and shows a lack of care. Science shows spelling is a way of accessing meaning and connects the bits of the brain that involve self-government and executive functions. When the digital age dawned, no one invited along spelling (or handwriting), but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a late arrival. Correct spelling brings connection, communication, being understood. To that, we should all say YAAAS.

ometimes I surprise myself about what I don’t know I know, if that makes any sense. Last week, my very good friend Brigette Seymour got married to her soulmate Tom Lollback. I have known Brigette since I’ve worked at Alex Surf Club and she was a feisty just-turned 18-year-old. I was given some strong advice not to employ her, but I like to find out these things for myself. She did a great job and we had a bit of fun along the way. She moved on into the QAS, but I still see her at the club as a competitor and volunteer. Strong-minded would be an understatement but I overcame that – well, until the wedding that is. My jobs were to pick her and the bridesmaids up in our club bus and drive them from their accommodation to Sunshine Beach Surf Club, be there by 3.30pm and after the ceremony, drive them to an unknown location for photos, back again then MC the wedding reception, starting with introducing the bridal party to the guests with a dancing entrance. So job one – be on time – was fine until I got to the roundabout at Coolum at 3pm

and there was a thousand cars coming from Yandina. As I went around the roundabout, I got cut off and ended up heading to Yandina. It took me a kilometre or so to get a break in the line to turn around. I managed to make it, just a few minutes late. I picked up the crew and headed to Sunshine Surfy, with some new instructions from the photographer (boss number two) that went like this: “So you’re the bus driver, you need to be ready as soon as the ceremony is over, no kissing because we don’t have much light, got it?” The wedding was beautiful, then we darted off. I think the rest of the evening went exactly as the wedding couple hoped it would – family friends good food, great music from Brendon Hogan and awesome service from Sunshine Beach Surf Club. Now, here is the bit I didn’t know I knew. It is only when you see a young couple commit to a life together in front of their family and friends do you realise how some people make an impact on your life. Brigette has done that for me and the other day reminded me of it. Family, friends and health are all you need. Brig and Tom thank you for reminding me.

DISHWASHER WARS Sami Muirhead says stacking the dishwasher correctly is a source of conflict in her marriage, but it all comes out in the wash.

here is always a critic in your family, isn’t there? You should hear my husband snort and chuckle and lovingly berate me when he unpacks the dishwasher if I have stacked the thing. Which is often. I have stacked more dishwashers in the last decade than most have had cups of tea. I am a shove-it-in and get-it-done kind of stacker. The more the merrier. The fry pan can go on the top or bottom shelf and if I can squeeze little cups underneath it, I take it as a victory. I hurl that cutlery in any way, up or down is fine. I whirl in the plates and they can touch each other if they want. It’s cleaning, not an event with COVID-safe social distancing, people! They are all going to be cleaned and the worst-case scenario is that I may have to wash one or two dirty items again. I like to walk on the wild side. My husband is a neat dishwasher stacker and has a sense of superiority that his way is the right way. But I argue every time his way takes 10 times longer and who has time for that? My neat-freak plate police even stoops so low as to restack the dishwasher behind my back. I hear this is common foul play in marriages. Sometimes I will

open the dishwasher to see a pixie has been in the middle of the night to make things inside all neat and orderly. A pixie wearing tracksuit pants and size eleven male shoes. The pixie has lined up the glasses and all of the cutlery is facing the same way. I threaten divorce as we have heated words in front of the Finish Dishwashing tablet box.

“I hurl that cutlery in any way, up or down is fine. I whirl in the plates…” But I think the family court would side with my husband for tolerating more than a decade of dishwasher disrespect. In the meantime, what a great idea for schools to introduce some life learning lessons into their curriculum. Teaching the kids how to stack a dishwasher would be a stroke of genius if the kids had to pass an exam on the correct way to stack it.

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common condition as a person ages, especially in those who have suffered previous knee injuries. The disease ranges in severity from early disease causing occasional pain and soreness, to severe disease with persistent joint pain and stiffness. Treatment of knee OA symptoms is complex, and current recommendations for mild to moderate OA include weight reduction, lifestyle changes, medications, physiotherapy, bracing and musclestrengthening programs. For patients who continue to have pain despite these early treatment options, intra-articular platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are worth considering as an alternative treatment option for pain relief. COAST RENTAL MARKET LEADS NATION With the flight paths changed, people are discovering the hidden gem that is Marcoola. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

he Sunshine Coast’s house rental cost has outperformed the rest of Australia with the sleepy suburb of Marcoola topping the list. REA Group economist Anne Flaherty says regional Queensland has seen more population growth than any other area. “A lot of that has been driven by interstate migration,” she says. “The Sunshine Coast has been the standout region.” The latest REA rental report shows Marcoola has recorded the strongest growth in median house rental costs. In the three months to July 2021, the median rent went up to $650. In the same period last year it was $365 per week. “One reason why the jump has been so high is a lot of short-term accommodation has been converted into long-term accommodation,” Ms Flaherty adds. Marcoola’s Northshore Realty business partner Debbie Pashley says she has seen rents in the area increase by between 30 and 40 per cent, with one in four applications coming from people outside the area. In July last year, she notes, the market
