Earlier this month I shared my personal experience of the hard-working and supportive staff at Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s emergency department. The feedback has been not all that surprising, with many people sharing their own positive stories, and gratitude for our health workers. This week, we share another story about the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, but this time it’s about those people who work quietly behind the scenes to raise much-needed funds to support our hospitals. Since its inception in 1998, Wishlist has grown into one of the region’s most vital charities, pouring millions of dollars into valuable services to support patients and their families. From the Clown Doctor program to therapy dogs, all the way through to lifesaving medical equipment,

Wishlist has significantly contributed to the community. Now, the charity is calling on the Sunshine Coast to back its latest campaign. The Let’s get to it campaign aims to raise $2 million by 2022. Queensland playing it safe AAP

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the best way out of the pandemic is vaccination, but even hitting 80 per cent vaccination rates might not be enough for life to return to normal. WORDS: Marty Silk, AAP.

ueensland wants to see new vaccination modelling, which includes high COVID-19 case numbers, before it commits to easing restrictions over the long term. A nationally-agreed plan aims to open up Australia once 80 per cent of eligible people are fully vaccinated. However, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that target was based on Doherty Institute modelling that “was premised on there being 30, around 30 cases in the community, and now we have thousands of cases”. “Our aim is always to suppress that virus but even at 70 per cent and 80 per cent vaccination rates, as I’ve said, and what’s in the modelling as well ... there will be some limited restrictions and some limited or specified lockdown,” she said. “So this is a book that has not been written ... This is uncharted territory and the best way out of this pandemic is vaccination.” She said she wants to see new Doherty Institute modelling, taking

into account high case numbers before she commits to reopening when the 80 per cent target is hit. “There are now what, 9000 cases or more. That’s a lot more than 30,” she said. “So we actually need to get the modelling. Yes, everyone on national cabinet acknowledges that the extra research needs to happen, the extra modelling now needs to happen. “We want a safe way out of this pandemic.” As of Monday, Ms Palaszczuk said the virus was under control in Queensland. However, the risk of the worrying Delta variant spreading from New South Wales and Victoria remained high. “It’s like a waiting game,” she said. “Any day this could change, and we need to be ready.” Queensland has administered first vaccines doses to 46.3 per cent of the eligible population and two doses to 27.6 per cent. The state will also roll out 28 special

vaccination hubs for workers at logistics centres and meatworks, to ensure they can keep working and are protected during future outbreaks. Ms Palaszczuk said eventually children, particularly high school students, will need to get a jab. The premier was disappointed that 1000 New South Wales residents had breached stay-at-home orders and Queensland border rules to protest in Coolangatta on Sunday. She said the country was going through “difficult times”, but ignoring public health orders in two states was irresponsible. Ms Palaszczuk said she had offered to temporarily shift the border to include Tweed Heads in her state, but that had been rejected by the New South Wales government. “I am extremely disappointed and concerned about this kind of behaviour that puts people at risk,” she said. “And I understand, families and businesses want to be reunited and there is

such a similarity across that border there, and I think even (Defence Minister) Peter Dutton agrees with me about having that border with the river. “We don’t agree a lot, I can I tell you that,” she added. Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said state hubs had vaccinated more than 112,000 people in the seven days up until Monday. She urged people to get vaccinated before there was another outbreak in Queensland. “Now is the time, you only need to look at New South Wales and Victoria, to know why it is so important,” she said. “Those communities are flooding into vaccination centres now, because they’ve got a massive outbreak. “Don’t wait until we have a massive outbreak, come forward now get vaccinated before this virus is in our community.” Visithealth.gov.au/initiatives-andprograms/covid-19-vaccines to check your eligibility.

The vital work of Wishlist A hospital stay is never a pleasant experience, but Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service charity Wishlist makes life a lot easier for patients and their families. However, the service needs community support to keep doing its important work. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

The dog proved to have a very special connection to the Tewantin resident. “That was pretty full-on actually,” Ms Curries says.“Norman was the name of Lennix’s granddad who we lost a few years ago. That was so beautiful, when they brought him in and he jumped up on Lennix’s bed and we asked ‘what’s his name?’ It was very special.” Ms Currie says with most of Lennix’s extended family interstate, the clown

t a time when patients and families are facing some of their most difficult days, a local health charity is able to fill a much-needed void, providing a ray of hope and support. From in-hospital services to accommodation relief and vital medical equipment, for more than 20 years Wishlist has been fundraising for the needs of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. And now, this vital charity is calling on the region to once again show support as it attempts to raise $2 million for a life-changing community project. Sunshine Coast mother Amber Currie now knows just how important Wishlist’s services are after her 12-year-old son Lennix (pictured left) spent a week in hospital in May. An aspiring surfer, Lennix was admitted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) with a severe bone infection. “He had a broken toe that we didn’t actually know was broken,” Ms Currie tells My Weekly Preview. “He competed in the Noosa Festival of Surfing and he kicked the toe that had been sore. Then it started [swelling] up and he was in a lot of pain. “He ended up having a really severe infection in the bone and he was told worst-case scenario he could have his toe amputated.” At a scary time for the surfer and his family, Wishlist’s Clown Doctors Service and Delta Therapy Dogs made the world of difference. “It was a long seven days on the drip on the antibiotics,” Ms Currie says. “[The antibiotics] were that strong they were stinging [Lennix’s] veins, so it was nice to have the distraction. The clown doctors – they were so funny. They did a skit. They pretended they were the judges at Lennix’s next surf competition. “They made a blow-up trophy out

doctors and Norman were the visitors he couldn’t otherwise have. “All my family are in country Victoria, so in the way of having people to visit him that was the best thing that could ever have happened.” Lennix made a full recovery, leaving hospital with all 10 toes. He is now back on the surfboard and picking up sponsorships from major surf brands. Never imaging her family would benefit from the work of Wishlist, Ms myweeklypreview.com.au

Currie is encouraging residents to do what they can to support the charity. “I encourage everyone to get behind and support these guys because you never know when it’s going to happen to you. “In Lennix’s case it was a great outcome; it wasn’t as serious as what other people would be in hospital for. For someone who would be sicker than Lennix and not have those services available, oh I couldn’t imagine. You could not imagine being in hospital for two or three months with your sick child and not having Wishlist to be able to come in and make your life so much easier and put smiles on not only the child’s faces but also the family’s faces.” Since 1998, more than $18 million has been raised to go directly towards the Coast’s local health system, with Wishlist pledging $1 million annually towards hospital accommodation at Wishlist and Reed houses, research projects, medical equipment, support services, staff scholarships and education funding. Wishlist’s latest and biggest project, Wishlist Centre, is under construction in Birtinya. It will allow the charity to expand its services and forge further partnerships with local organisations. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says Wishlist Centre will provide much-needed transitionary care accommodation

projects across the region. The first house in 2011 helped purchase ophthalmology equipment for Caloundra Hospital, saving families a trip to Brisbane for eye treatment. In 2016, $262,692 from a second house helped establish the local Clown Doctor service and continue music and pet therapy in the Children’s Ward, as well as staff education and medical equipment. In 2020, Ausmar built a custom six-bedroom “home away from home” in Birtinya to provide emergency hospital accommodation to families needing to be close to their loved ones. “I had an interest in what Wishlist were doing purely because Carly had some issues when she was born,” Mr Bryan says. “We were wanting to be involved in a local charity and Wishlist really rang a bell for us. Without hospitals with the best equipment and the best doctors and the best nurses, we are all in strife. Every single cent that Wishlist raise, I always know it is going to the best possible cause.” As part of the current Wishlist Centre project, Ausmar will fit out 16 accommodation rooms and made a generous sponsorship donation. “Wishlist is also calling for donations of people to sponsor a room and we took out one of those sponsorships as well.”

LETS GET TO IT Stage one of the four-level $14 million Wishlist Centre is expected to open in mid-2022. The facility is supported by a $12 million federal government grant secured by Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace (pictured above), who has been a huge supporter of the charity. The Wishlist team is hoping the community will back the Let’s Get 2 It campaign. The aim is to raise a further $2 million by 2022 to ensure Wishlist is able to meet all the needs of Sunshine Coast patients and families. “It’s an ambitious target at a time when COVID has greatly affected fundraising, however, when we open mid-next year Wishlist Centre will provide services not yet offered in this health precinct,” CEO Lisa Rowe says. “I’ve been at Wishlist for over 20 years now and I’m so proud of what the community has helped us achieve. “Wishlist Centre really ups the ante in terms of the way we’ll direct donations and funds raised to the support patients of local hospitals and their families.”

opposite SCUH to support patients and their families. “We know that the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service catchment is one of the fastest growing in Queensland and is expected to grow by 140,000 residents over the next 15 years,” Ms Rowe says. “There is a need for transitionary accommodation. Stage one will be able to [support] patients receiving ongoing treatment for cancer, dialysis, complications in pregnancy, or are requiring pre- or post-operative care. “Wishlist Centre will provide physical, emotional and psychological support for patients and their families, and will also offer more medical, allied and specialist services to the local area.” Prominent local builder Tony Bryan, from Ausmar Homes, has been supporting Wishlist for 10 years and knows just how important access to medical equipment is after his own daughter required lifesaving surgery at just six weeks old. Living in Ballarat at the time, Mr Bryan recalls the fear he and wife Jackie had of handing over their first-born, Carly, to the surgeon. “At about six weeks old she started having kidney infections and issues – she had to have an operation,” Mr Bryan says. “I had to take her to the surgery. To take your six-week-old, first child you’ve ever had, and hand her to a doctor in the surgery was like, wow. “I remember handing her to the surgeon and thinking if you haven’t got the best equipment in the world, we are all in deep strife here. They operated on her and fixed her kidney. She went in a couple of months later to have a second operation and that fixed her. She is now perfectly healthy and 24 years old.” While his family was not directly supported by Wishlist, My Bryan says his experience with Carly gives him a deep appreciation for the work the charity does. Since 2011, Ausmar Homes has delivered three ‘The House the Coast Built’, projects which were auctioned off to fund

64,294 Owners of the 64,294 cats and dogs registered on the Sunshine Coast are being reminded to renew registration by September 30. ECZEMA IN THE SPOTLIGHT Eczema sufferers and their families are being encouraged to provide photos showing the reality of life with eczema as part of a photography campaign for World Atopic Eczema Day on September 14. The #ThisIsEczema campaign aims to highlight the far-reaching effects of the condition, which affects one in five children and one in 10 adults. Research shows that eczema sufferers and carers battle fatigue, sleep loss, anxiety and depression and face many other follow-on effects, including loss of work, loneliness and social withdrawal. Local building approvals reached a record level of $1.9 billion for the 2020/21 financial year. Councillor Christian Dickson says the council’s Development Indicators Annual Highlights report reflects activity in the region’s building sector. “Locals have jumped at the chance to renovate their homes with around 18,500 development applications lodged, Cr Dickson says. “The report reflects record high plumbing and drainage work approvals, plus 2463 new lots created. Work is steadily continuing on the development of our new CBD at Maroochydore. Suburbs like Buderim, Bokarina and Palmview experienced significant building activity as well as the Caloundra South suburbs of Baringa and Nirimba.”

SURPRISE MOVE FOR STAR SWIM COACH Sunshine Coast swimming coach Chris Mooney, mentor of golden girl Kaylee McKeown, is returning to his “training ground” in a surprise career move. One of Australia’s most successful coaches at the Tokyo Olympics, Mooney has been appointed head swimming coach at Bond University. He is currently head swimming coach at Spartans Swimming at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where the high-performance program includes Ms McKeown. The Bond move will be a homecoming for Mooney, who began his coaching career on the Gold Coast under master coach Denis Cotterell. He then gained experience in the acclaimed US college system as a coach at the University of Hawaii before his role at the Spartans. hen asking a young child what they want to be when they grow up, it’s not uncommon to hear professions such as doctors and nurses on the top of the list. With jobs in health exploding in recent years due to the COVID pandemic, an ageing population and more focused services for people living with a variety of conditions, that dream is now becoming a reality for many Sunshine Coast students. Teenagers Abbie Harmsworth and Lily Williams are both eying off health careers

Sunshine Coast students are eyeing of health and medical careers thanks to a recent demand for staff in the sector and have already set the wheels in motion as they complete vocational education training locally through Connect n Grow. “I would love to peruse a career in the midwifery sector of health as I’ve always loved the idea of the maternal side of caring for newborn babies and helping new mothers,” 16-year-old Abbie from Landsborough says.

“Many things excite me about a career in health, however one of the main reasons is healthcare can be very rewarding when caring for patients. “When people go to hospitals it may not be for the best of reasons. I would like to enlighten their day and give them quality care that they need.” Inspired by her favourite television

show Grey’s Anatomy, 17-year-old Lily from Caloundra is interested in nursing or dermatology. “I have known that I have wanted to work in healthcare since I was 12 years old,” she says. “A family member passed away a few years ago. I didn’t know at the time, but all the amazing healthcare workers supporting my family (really) cared. “I want to be there to give someone good news and help care for people, but also comforting family members in hard times. “There is such a huge need for workers in this sector, especially since the pandemic began … hopefully opening up many more jobs for people in healthcare.” The latest industry projections from the Labour Market Information Portal for the healthcare and social assistance sector shows one in four Australians will need to work in the sector to meet an expected 14.2 per cent increase in jobs by 2025. This comes as statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on August 19 report Australia’s unemployment rate has dropped by 0.3 per cent to 4.6 per cent for the month of July 2021 and that between June and July the number of Aussies joining the workforce grew by 2200 jobs. This training allows insight into what the future shows and creates a head start for all students participating in the early training.” Hoping to one day work in England, Lily says her vocational training is teaching her both career and life skills. “I learn important skills not only for a career in healthcare but life skills like washing hands, communicating with people, brushing teeth, and how to be professional in a work environment,” she says. “This also gives us the skills of taking vital signs, CPR, first aid stocking and transferring patients from place to place, making a hospital bed, cleaning a room after usage. WAGE GROWTH EXPECTED TO STALL Uncertainty around the extent of COVID-19 economic damage is set to depress wage growth and keep a lid on inflation, which will keep interest rates low for longer. The more aggressive Delta variant of the coronavirus that is driving Australia's third wave means the Reserve Bank's targets could take longer to achieve, economists warn. "Delta has changed things considerably," ANZ head of economics David Plank said last Friday. Some 200,000 workers could lose employment over the next couple of months, imposing hardship on households and particularly for those already earning the least. ANZ doesn't expect the RBA's desired combination of inflation above two per cent and wages growth at three per cent or higher to be achieved until around mid-2023. Small and medium business owners say a corporate tax cut is the best way to help them survive another year of COVID-19, a CreditorWatch survey has found. Other top suggestions for decision makers include opening borders (43 per cent) and cutting red tape (37 per cent). But business owners remain optimistic

about the future, with recruitment and training tipped as the biggest investment this year. "Once Australia gets through these lockdown periods, the economic and financial bounceback will be large and swift," CreditorWatch chief executive Patrick Coughlan said. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is banking on the economy, and businesses, adjusting to COVID-19 without further draining government coffers. He has warned state treasurers not to expect the same level of financial support once Australia's vaccination rate passes 70 per cent. "There should be no expectation on behalf of the states and the territories that the Commonwealth's significant emergency economic support will continue at the scale that it has already been delivered," he told Sky News. – AAP

n important fundraiser supporting women facing a breast cancer diagnosis is gearing up for another year of pink, fun and important conversations. High Tea by the Sea is an annual event, now in its sixth year, where 4 Ingredients joins forces with Coastline BMW and the wider Sunshine Coast community to raise awareness and money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). NBCF statistics reveal one in seven

women and one in 700 men in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes. 4 Ingredients founder Kim McCosker began fundraising in 2014 after realising just how many women and their families are touched by the disease. “Breast cancer does not discriminate; it can strike anyone at any time, and we all know plenty that have been directly and indirectly affected,” she says. “That was enough for us to start fundraising, which we did writing

4 Ingredients Cook 4 a Cure, which was published September 2014. “Since then, 4 Ingredients and Coastline BMW have donated $328,650 directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for the extraordinary work it does in the field of breast cancer research. “What we love most about this is that its research and the wonder drugs it has harboured have helped other cancer patients too. “We believe that we will see a cure for cancer – that the NBCF’s aspirational goal

of zero deaths by 2030 will be realised – but we know it will take research, and research requires investment.” Someone who knows all too well the importance of finding a cure is breast cancer survivor Amanda Van Dijk. Attending High Tea by the Sea events herself and contributing to the fundraiser, the mother-of-two never imagined she’d be on the receiving end. “The first year I attended in, one of the many inspirational speakers noted that one in seven women in Australia

Amanda Van Dijk will be diagnosed with breast cancer. “I remember looking around at my girlfriends and thinking that it could be any one of us eight seated around the table. “I never would have thought that two years later, I was the one and that I too would benefit from the NBCF fundraising.” Living a healthy and active Sunshine Coast lifestyle, Ms Van Dijk’s world turned upside down after a shock diagnosis three years ago. “In 2018, at age 44, my world was rocked by the diagnosis of stage two invasive ductal carcinoma, HER2 positive breast cancer – an aggressive cancer

which had spread to my lymph nodes,” she tells My Weekly Preview. Other than feeling tired, and what working mother doesn’t, I had no symptoms and no close family history of cancer.” Ms Van Dijk underwent five months of chemotherapy and surgery to remove six lymph nodes and the tumour in her breast, before finishing with a month of targeted radiation and a year of injections. “My treatment completed in 2019 and I am now in remission. But the reality is, you don’t just bounce back to life as it was pre-cancer. I remain managing the side effects of chemotherapy and I am slowly learning to accept my new normal life.” After speaking on the panel of the 2019 event, Ms Van Dijk is looking forward to attending her fourth High Tea by the Sea fundraiser. The event will be held on September 19 at Sunshine Coast Turf Club with major raffles and prizes up for grabs, including a new Mini Cooper valued at $42,000. DON’T WAIT Sunshine Coast women are being urged to ensure their health checks are up to date. The call comes following the recent release of a report by the Radiation Therapy Advisory Group (RTAG) that highlights the impact of COVID-19 on breast cancer screening. Experts have observed changes in patient behaviour during the pandemic, with many avoiding attending regular health checks, including breast screening.

BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast medical director Dr Alison Roper says, “If women put off having their regular breast screen this can lead to delayed diagnosis. “Finding breast cancer early means that women have more options for treatment. Early detection can literally save lives.” Women between the ages of 50 and 74 are strongly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years as the best way to find breast cancer early. “Studies show that women in the 50 – 74-year age group benefit the most from regular breast screening, but the free service is also available to women aged 40 – 49 and over 75 years,” Dr Roper says. BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast is operating as normal with COVIDSafe plans in place at each of the clinics. Early, late and Saturday appointments are available to make it easier for women to find time to book. The mobile service will also be visiting shopping centres in Nambour, Morayfield and Birtinya during September and Forest Glen in October.

Tackling mental health Youturn Youth Support’s new pilot program is putting fishing rods into the hands of young men and boys to help improve their mental health outcomes. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

relaxing and popular pastime will become central for a Sunshine Coast support service as it aims to improve mental health in young men. Youturn Youth Support is piloting Fishin’ Mates, an eight-week mental health program to encourage young men to get out into nature and try fishing as a way of reducing stress and reconnecting with the environment and others. Starting in September, 12 men aged 12 to 25 will meet once a week at a different location for fishing afternoons facilitated

by a Youturn youth worker, psychologist and a mentor and fishing enthusiast who can share their knowledge. Statistics from Headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation show more than 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before the age of 25, and one in two young Australians cannot carry out their daily lives due to a decline in wellbeing. Connected closely to fishing through his culture, program co-ordinator Harry Pitt says Youturn has been overwhelmed with community support and interest.

PANDEMIC UNLEASHES WALKING BUG COVID-19 lockdowns have sparked a national walking revolution, according to the Heart Foundation. With gyms closed across the country, more than 100,000 Australians have signed up for the health charity’s new Personal Walking Plan. And with over 2300 of them surveyed about the benefits, they’ve overwhelmingly declared an improvement to their wellbeing. Some 97 per cent say they feel the program is important to their physical wellness, 90 per cent to their mental health and 65 per cent to their social wellbeing. Around 86 per cent of respondents say the plan has helped them reach goals they set when registering including losing weight, getting fitter, being more motivated, having more energy and feeling better about themselves. Before joining the program, about 20 per cent did the recommended 30 minutes a day of exercise on five or more days a week. By the end of their participation, the proportion had jumped to 48 per cent. Those doing the recommended two days a week increased from 26 per cent to 67 per cent. Of the participants who did no previous exercise, almost a third were meeting guidelines for general activity by the time they finished and six-in-10 were doing the

recommended amount of strength training. Participants in the six-week program receive a walking plan tailored to their fitness levels delivered via emails and SMS. An average of about 700 Australians have signed up daily, with the 100,000th doing so last week. Ninety-nine per cent of those who have completed the plan say they’ll continue walking or physical activity. Heart Foundation Director of Active Living Trevor Shilton believes the pandemic has been a factor in Australians embracing the plan. “Despite all our medals at the recent Olympic Games and our international image as a sport-loving nation, the sad fact is that around one-intwo Australian adults are not active enough for good heart health. Prof Shilton says physical inactivity is undoubtedly a key factor in heart disease, which takes 50 Australian lives each day, or one every 30 minutes. “Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day can reduce your risk of not only heart disease but also stroke, diabetes, dementia and some cancers,” he says. “It can also help maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. A story from the heart Rhiannon Wilde was minding her own business when a queer teen character called Henry Hamlet popped into her head. His story engaged the author right away and has resonated with young readers. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

rowing up queer in Caloundra wasn’t easy for author Rhiannon Wilde. The 26-yearold struggled with her sexuality and found there were few role models to identify with. Being part of the LGBTQI community wasn’t normalised and advocated for in the way it is today and books about teenagers questioning their sexual preferences were almost nonexistent. Had there been a book like Henry Hamlet’s Heart to read, it would have made life a lot easier. The Brisbane writer won the 2019 Queensland Literary Awards Glendower Award for Emerging Queensland Writer with this heart-wrenching, funny tale about the awkward Henry Hamlet and his tumultuous path to finding love where he least expects it. A young adult novel that

explores teenage sexuality and friendship, the author drew on her experience as a high school English teacher to write a book that has resonated deeply with young readers. “I’ve had lovely feedback, particularly from young teenage boys,” Ms Wilde says. “A few of them have reached out to me and sent me messages. Henry doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life

and I’ve had so many messages from teenagers in Year 12 who can relate to that, which is so humbling and amazing. I’ve had lots of messages from queer men, which has been incredible. “Having taught high school English, I knew the fears and stresses they face. I knew you can get to 17 or 18 and you’re not really sure what you want your life to look like, but feel like you should know. “I started the draft when I was 23, so it wasn’t that long since the end of school and the start of university. I remember thinking I was supposed to have everything figured out and I didn’t.” Ms Wilde had wanted to be a writer since childhood and had made a few attempts at writing novels. She began a creative writing degree at university but switched to education in order to pursue what she saw as a more practical, well-paid career path. Her teaching years proved fertile ground for her emergence as a young adult (YA) author. “I love reading YA and still read it even though I’m nearly 27,” she says. “It’s that time in people’s lives where they’re forming their thoughts and beliefs. It’s like the very beginning of figuring out who you’re going to be. I think that’s fun to capture in characters. I was watching students do that in my life as a teacher. I was teaching Year 12s and watching them figure out what they wanted to do with their lives. It’s an exciting but scary time. I think YA can help young people to see themselves represented and feel a bit better about things.” It was during a school excursion to a cemetery in 2018 that she came

PROFILE across a grave inscribed with the name Henry Hamlet. “I just thought, Henry Hamlet sounds cool and I love the way it just rolled off the tongue,” she says. “I could see him really clearly – my Henry – this teenager with brown hair, brown eyes and glasses. He followed me around and I don’t think I really had a choice. Once he showed up in my life, I knew I had a character I could follow to the end. His voice is really immediate and engaging. I interviewed pretty much all my male friends to make sure I got that male experience as accurate as I possibly could and we worked on his voice in the editing to make sure it was as male as we could make it.” Ms Wilde identifies as bisexual and lives in Brisbane with her male partner, who is also from the LGBTQI community. Now able to follow her dream to be a full-time writer, she’s thrilled her book has resonated with younger members of that community, saying it would have helped her in her younger years. “These are the stories I like to read because I didn’t get to read them when I was a teenager in the 2000s,” she says. “The only thing that did help me was reading as many varied experiences of people who were queer as possible. But I had to hunt for them and I didn’t find them until I was in my twenties.

GOING THROUGH A ROUGH PATCH?

“I love reading anything about queer people and their experiences. It helps my inner child a bit. “I don’t think it was all as normalised back then as it is now,” she says. “I had crushes on my friends – it’s an experience queer people often go through. That’s why Henry’s experience is relatable. Back when I was at school, it was a negative thing in the schoolyard a lot of the time. We’ve come a long way. Every queer story that keeps coming out is important.”

It’s game on for local athlete

When Australia’s Paralympians touched down in Tokyo recently for the start of the Games, the Sunshine Coast’s Chris Bond was among them. He’ll compete in the punishing sport of wheelchair rugby. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

nspirational Sunshine Coast athlete Chris Bond says there were a lot of ‘why me?’ moments after he suddenly became seriously ill and lost his legs. However, a passion for sport and committed support helped him become one of Australia’s most amazing representatives. The 35-year-old, from Baringa in Aura, is set to compete in Tokyo at his third Paralympics as a leading wheelchair rugby player. He is in Japan and the Steelers began their campaign on day one of the Games yesterday, Wednesday, August 25. Mr Bond had barely heard of wheelchair rugby when he was a teenager. He was a gifted athlete, who had a particular passion for rugby league. But his life was turned upside down as a 19-year-old. “Out of the blue I felt sick in my stomach, and I was rushed to

hospital and the next thing you know I’m in the ICU coming out of an induced coma,” he says. Mr Bond had a rare form of leukaemia and he developed a severe infection which started to take over his body. Both of his legs were subsequently amputated, along with his left hand, and four fingers on his right hand. “It was extremely tough,” he says.“I had sort of thought I was invincible and then I was suddenly completely dependent on others. “I was sitting there, unable to feed myself or go to the toilet by myself.” It was hard for him to comprehend what had happened and there was,

understandably, some self-pity. “It [the illness and operations] was all so out of the blue and I had done nothing wrong, so there were a lot of ‘why me?’ moments, particularly at the beginning.” But he bounced back. “Luckily, I had good family support around me to help me get through those dark days and I reached little goals, through my hospital journey, through my chemotherapy and with rehabilitation.” “I started gaining some independence, strength and a little bit of my identity. “I was a young, fit 19-year-old and then suddenly I was a skinny 40-kilogram guy in a wheelchair, and I didn’t want to identify with that, so I started to get

stronger, and I felt a bit more like myself. “Instead of dwelling on what’s wrong, I had to try and just get my head space right and think ‘all right, what’s next?’” He pursued a valuable outlet. “There was something missing in my life and that was sport and I wanted to get back into it,” Mr Bond says. “But I had no idea about disability sports. “The guys at the rehab said: ‘if you want to get into sport, swimming’s probably the only thing you’d be able to do with your disability’. “I thought I’d give it a go and I did for about a year, but I really didn’t enjoy it. I had been more of a runner and a team sport kind of guy.” A chance meeting with the Australian wheelchair rugby coach, Brad Dubberley, at a gym in Canberra where he lived at the time provided Mr Bond with a great opportunity. “He came over and said g’day and asked if I wanted to try the sport and I was like 100 per cent. “The Aussie team had a camp in Canberra that year, so I rocked up as a

disabilities and abilities after being involved in accidents or illness. Less functional players provide screens and blocks. “There are a lot of tactics and wheelchair rugby is a mix of three of four different sports [like basketball, rugby and gridiron], but it really comes well together,” Mr Bond says. He adds that his rise as an elite athlete is a special journey his family can follow. “When I go and represent my country, I’m doing it for Australia, but also my family, who have seen me in my dire straits,” he says. “To be successful at the highest level and add value to the team is pretty cool to share with your family, who have been through the trenches with you.” And Mr Bond is scoring goals in all aspects of his life. He now lives at Baringa with his fiancee, two-time Paralympic wheelchair basketballer Bridie Kean, and their daughter Victoria. He works full time as a fundraising manager for the Australian Sports Foundation and is on the board for Disability Sports Australia. The Paralympics is being broadcast live on the Seven Network.

I was in awe of what the guys were doing and then I jumped in and gave it a go.” He immediately took a liking to it, and decided that was what he wanted to do. “I dedicated all my time to it,” Mr Bond says. “I did everything I could during the next 12 months to be able to play for my state and then luckily for my country soon after.” Mr Bond made his debut for Australia in 2011 and emerged as a key player, going on to help the Steelers win in London 2012 and Rio 2016. He’ll play his 200th game for the team at Tokyo. “Ever since I got in he rugby chair, I haven’t looked back and have done everything I can to represent my country and I’ve grown my game to now have a leadership role.” His passion for rugby league as a teenager has transferred to wheelchair rugby as an adult. “I love the fast and full-contact nature of it,” he says. “That’s what drags you in and you have the team camaraderie as well. And spectators love it too because it’s full contact.” The Steelers have claimed victory at the past two Paralympics. “But Japan beat us at the world championships in 2018, which was our last major event,” Mr Bond says. “So, it’s time to take it [top status] off them on their home soil and show them we’re the best in the world.” Mr Bond plays a major role in the Australian team, essentially running the plays, along with Ryley Batt. COMING TOGETHER FOR OUR SUCCESS As the Paralympics get underway, Queensland continues to celebrate its own Olympic bid success. But, Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says there is much to do before 2032. Winning the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games presents this region with wide-ranging economic and social opportunities. It also brings into focus what we will need to achieve to ensure the region is positioned to seize these opportunities. Over the past decade the region has taken many positive steps forward. We have seen the benefits of Sunshine Coast Council investing in assets such as the new runway for the airport, the Maroochydore City Centre, and the international broadband submarine cable. There have also been state government investments in health and road infrastructure. The region has also relied heavily on private sector investment in residential and retail projects. Now, thanks to the Games announcement, we are well positioned to capitalise on yet another positive decade. We need to work quickly and collaboratively at all levels of government, the private sector and the community to make it a reality. To build and maintain momentum, the council needs to work with the investment community to demonstrate the region welcomes private sector investment. We need to secure investment in resorts, attractions and tourism accommodation. Projects in these sectors have continually experienced difficulty getting approvals, creating investment uncertainty and a widening gap in accommodation. If this is not addressed now, we will not be ready to cope with the

demand in 2032. One of our greatest challenges for the Games will be efficiently getting people into and around our region. Improving all methods of transportation to move people between venues will be a priority, and a reliable and efficient heavy rail spine should be the starting point. To deliver an effective rail system the three tiers of government need to be in lockstep to provide the connecting infrastructure. There should be no piecemeal approach. If Maroochydore is to be considered the city centre, then heavy rail is non-negotiable. Cut red tape that slows down development, get private investment flowing, get public sector funding for essential hard and soft infrastructure, improve housing supply and housing affordability and create essential skills, capabilities and jobs across a range of industries. We need an environment that encourages and enables the private sector to step forward and invest and we then need a skilled and keen workforce to fill the jobs created across all industries, in addition to those from the public sector. The Brisbane 2032 Games is a catalyst for planning and infrastructure that will endure well into the future, when the Games are a distant memory. Get that wrong and it’ll be an unmitigated disaster. To address these opportunities and challenges over the next decade we need alignment and intent between our political and business leaders and our community.

DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVANT RETIRES Wendy Latham has spent more than three decades serving Australia’s veterans on the Sunshine Coast and beyond. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

fter 35 years enriching the lives of returned veterans, a Mountain Creek woman is retiring from a long and successful career. Wendy Latham joined the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in Brisbane in 1985, spending more than three decades working across a variety of roles. “Back in 1985 to join the public

service you had to sit a test,” she says. “I sat the test and was put on a waiting list and eventually my name came to the top. “I started on the 8th of October 1985 as a file room assistant in the Brisbane office of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.” Mrs Latham transferred to the Hobart office in 1986 to be closer to family,

working in the personnel section paying staff wages, then a pension role paying veteran pensions for nine years before moving into a community support role. “That was probably one of the more memorable highlights of my career,” she says. “I got to meet Alec Campbell who was our last World War I Gallipoli veteran. Alec was 102 when he passed away. “Part of my role was commemoration and looking after our special World War I veterans.” In 2007 Mrs Latham moved to the Sunshine Coast, landing a manger role at the Maroochydore office. “I’ve been involved in outreach activities – we take our services up as far as Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Tin Can Bay. “I’ve been involved with a lot of the ex-service organisations around here – the RSLs and Legacy. “I’ve been involved in training Services Australia staff – I’ve been their go-to person to provide training.” Mrs Latham tells My Weekly Preview she has loved “going the extra mile” for veterans and their families during her career. “I’ve been dedicated to my job and I’ve loved my job – the whole 35 years. It’s really been a privilege to look after our veteran community.” “Being able to help the veterans with little things they may be confused about like helping them fill in forms – they are just so appreciative. “Most of the veterans in Australia and their families and war widows are very appreciate of what Veterans’ Affairs does.” Mrs Latham admits much has changed in those three decades, from the technology used to the services offered, particularly in relation to mental health.

“Our services are quite different today to when I stared. “We didn’t have computers, we didn’t have mobile phones. Our World War I and II veterans used to come into the office wearing their suits. “Over the years technology increased, we did things more efficiently. “These days most of our contemporary veterans, who are still serving and who recently served, want to do things online, by SMS or on the phone. “Our Vietnam veterans are in their mid- to late seventies now; some of them are quite tech savvy but they still want that face-to-face contact. “We provide a lot more services these days to our contemporary veterans. Our big focus is on mental health and they’ve got access to counselling.” After her years of dedication, Mrs Latham is looking forward to an active retirement enjoying the outdoors. “I’m going to dust off my golf clubs and play some golf. “I’m going to join a bushwalking club and I’m going to do volunteer driving for Bloomhill Cancer Care and – COVID permitting – my husband and I will do some travel around outback Queensland and other parts of Australia.”

MORE POLICE FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST The Police Commissioner is fast-tracking the deployment of extra officers to the Sunshine Coast, ultimately destined for a new police facility at Caloundra South. These extra 10 police officers over two years will be hosted at Caloundra Police Station and will later join other additional police officers at the Caloundra South station. Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll says five extra police officers will be deployed to Caloundra this financial year and a further five officers the following financial year. “We know the Sunshine Coast and, in particular, the Caloundra area continues to see rapid growth in population and infrastructure,” Commissioner Carroll says. “The deployment of additional officers to Caloundra will ensure the QPS is building capability in the area for the future while meeting the needs of the growing community.” The new station is expected to be built along Bells Creek Arterial Road to cater for the fast-growing Aura community, with further due diligence work underway. Once built, at least 30 officers will be based at the new Caloundra South facility, in addition to the existing staffing

YEAR 12 STUDENTS BRAVE THE SHAVE FOR CHARITY Senior students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College are helping in the fight against blood cancer after participating in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. The group of 15 Year 12 students was cheered on by students and staff as they shaved their heads or cut off their ponytails, raising an impressive $6800. Flinders’ head of Senior School Gary Davis says the Year 12 students have experienced the reward of working together to make a positive impact on

the world. “The college supported the fundraiser as an opportunity to have fun and unite the school community, while learning important life lessons about empathy, humanity and community service.” Hairdressers from Buderim salon Suite Three Hair made the cuts, ensuring the students’ precious locks were properly collected. QUEENSLAND COUNTRY BANK INVITES GROUPS TO APPLY FOR GRANTS Local community groups are invited to apply for a share of $100,000 in grant funding, with applications now open for the Queensland Country Bank’s 2021 Good for Good Community Grants. FRIGHTFULLY GOOD FUNDRAISER In a bid not to be ‘haunted’ by the unplanned cancellation of so many events due to COVID-19, the Australian Wearable Art Festival (AWAF) is determined to bring a little fun and fright to the Coast with a Halloween fundraiser event in October at Terella Brewing. Festival curator Wendy Roe says the fundraiser is the perfect event for the current landscape – encouraging people to embrace costuming, and mask wearing, while supporting local artists who have been doing it tough. All funds raised on the night will go towards supporting the much-anticipated AWAF Gala to be held in May, 2022. “The Halloween Fundraiser will be AWAF’s first-ever event fundraiser ahead of the gala to be held in May 2022 and provides an exciting opportunity to get a sneak peak of new work from wearable artists, raise dollars for our arts community and have a trick-or-treat party at the same time,” Ms Roe says. Every ticket includes a drink on arrival, entertainment with local band Raw Audio, who will bring the dance floor alive, prizes for the best-dressed, live auction and a range of fun fundraising activities facilitated by Mix FM’s radio announcers Todd Widdicombe and Sami Muirhead.

We are well ahead of our targets for emission reduction, and making huge progress in the uptake of renewable energy sources. Real action for climate change is well underway. for a child, and I was fortunat e enough to see that child get fitted in this frame. “It was very emotion al to see a kid who had been crawling around the floor all of a sudden, at five years of age, standing up for the first time. “The smile on their face was something you never see again. It was somethi ng that rung a bell with a lot of us.” The collection drive has “taken off” in the past three years with more than a tonne of donated stamps raising $167,000 for the project. Now, Mr Paine is calling on residents who have unwante d collections, including albums, stamps cut from envelopes, first day covers or mint stamps to consider donating them to the cause. “Everything that we get we sell in bulk. Most of them are Australian stamps and most of them have been just picked off envelopes. We sort them into four different

groups, dependi ng on where they are from and how much they are worth, and put them into a wine box.

“We sell about 40 to 50 wine boxes full of stamps every year, so about 500 kilograms a year.” Mr Paine now has assistants helping in New South Wales, Victoria, Western and South Australia and Tasmania and says a few rare stamps have been discover ed across the country.

“The fellow in Sydney picked up a Penny Black, which is one of the most valuable stamps in the world,” he says. “The Penny Black was the first stamp issued in England back in the 1800s. “We also get a lot of federation in Australia stamps prior to in 1901.” An avid stamp collector himself, Mr Paine donated his own collectio n to the project and has been recognis ed with an OAM for his contribu tion to the Australia Lions Stamp Club. n “It’s virtually a full-time job,” he says. “I’m going to hit 80 this year and that’s all I do. PASSING CYCLISTS Could someone please educate drivers regarding the rule around crossing double lines when passing a cyclist? Most drivers seem to think that the rule says you must cross double lines at any time when passing a cyclist. I am continually confronted by a car, 4WD or truck halfway across my lane as I

TESTING MY FAITH

Jane Stephens is all for incentivising COVID-19 vaccination, saying the virus is coming to all of us whether we like it or not.

he carrot and the stick are needed to be used in equal measure to kick those sceptical of COVID-19 vaccines into gear for the health and freedom of us all. The scuttlebutt – about the vaccine being loaded with a tracker, being primed to knock us all off and even that the virus does not exist – has morphed otherwisesensible people into crazy talkers. Restrictions and lockdowns, economic losses and isolation sadnesses are mounting, so let’s bring in the stick. Give the vaccinated the freedom to move around, eat at a cafe, book a holiday. Set a date when the vaccinated can be free from the threat of quarantine, tests and lockdowns. And let the unvaccinated remain constrained. Incentivise the heck out of vaccination, I say. Immunisations of any kind are not mandated by law in our country. But our governments can and do incentivise us to do certain things. Take, for example, the voluntary nature of providing your tax file number to your employer. Don’t do it and you get taxed at 50 per cent. Do it and the tax taken from your pay will be scaled to your income.

I say grab hold of the incentive idea and let it rip. Make life a bit tough for those who cling to their dangerous, debunked ideas that put others at risk. The only reason there are so many naysayers on the Sunshine Coast is because we have so far gotten off lightly. Barely anyone knows a Coast person who has ridden the waves of the illness. How blessed are we? In addition, many of those who have not yet begun the process of being vaccinated claim they have no need for it because they don’t desire to travel overseas. They ignore the fact that COVID-19 will come to them. Nothing is more certain, because once we open the state and international borders – and this is soon – we will all be exposed to the virus. In Europe, a vaccine passport is already needed to get around. There was bleating and moaning when those nations brought the vaccination passport in, but that was quickly followed by a surge in immunisation bookings. Bring in such standards here and the unjabbed will soon realise what they are missing out on. Let’s get a wriggle on with it so we can get on with living our lives.

I have had a challenging week, struggling with how unfair life can be. In amongst that has been the challenge of reading about people’s behaviour when they disagree with something. A young family I know and love have just had their world turned upside down with their near two-year-old daughter being diagnosed with childhood leukemia, which I find so unfair. But they and their support network will take it head on, focussed on making sure this beautiful little girl gets every possible chance to live the long and happy life she deserves. I pray the treatment and recovery is as speedy as possible. I do pray, but it is times like this my faith is really tested when I reflect on the week I was told about the battle ahead for this young family. It was the same seven days that started with a house invasion by youths at Pelican Waters where the McCosker family had three cars stolen and then the Kefu family in Brisbane were seriously assaulted by youths trying to steal their car in a brutal home invasion. By all reports, young teenagers were

involved and our state government wants to raise the age of youths so they can’t be prosecuted. My Christian faith is being tested. How can a two-year-old can be given such a tough start in life, but we have teenagers running around causing trauma to families with little fear of consequences. I must say though, my faith in our state government is tested, but I believe they will act appropriately over youth crime, due to two reasons. The general public have had an absolute gutful of it and if the current government wants to get re-elected, they will act on it because they know the other mob will if they don’t. Lastly, just to test me further, the anti-vaxxers are targeting doctors who are administering the COVID jab. What is this crazy world coming to? So I am going to keep praying – for the government to sort out this youth crime spree with some appropriate consequences and for the families affected, I pray that the ‘hostile’ anti-vaxxers get struck off Medicare and any government assistance. But most of all, I pray for that little girl and I bloody well hope someone is listening.

DRONE DRAMAS Sami Muirhead says if you’re thinking of giving a child a drone for their birthday, consider a book instead.

had a parent-fail this week when my seven-year-old boy’s new drone went crashing into the ocean. That is a sentence I never thought I would write. My gorgeous big brother sent a drone in the post for Augie’s birthday gift. What a good uncle! My seven-year-old was so excited to receive a plane that takes videos and photos. Even the word drone makes me feel a little intimidated by technology. But not my son. Nope. He put that thing together all by himself late at night and hit ‘go’ on the control panel to launch that evil little plane in our kitchen. It flew straight into a glass light then started buzzing towards my daughter’s face. So, I flashed up my hand in front of my girl to protect her. I will remember this story to bribe her when she starts her sulky teenage years and hates me. The blades of the drone cut my fingers slightly and we were all a bit shellshocked and decided it was best to wait for the next day to launch the wayward drone on the beach. What could go wrong with this demented little beast? I’ll tell you what went wrong. We

were at Double Island Point doing exactly what you are meant to be doing there: sipping ice-cold champers and eating prawn bread rolls dripping in seafood sauce. Mr Cheeky seven-year-old appears clutching the demon device. Before I could put down my bubbles, up went the drone into the air. What a sight! Then it went straight towards the Pacific Ocean. What a fright! Augie started screaming while chasing it. My kids and friends all started chasing him. I started screaming chasing this procession. The possessed plane crashed into the sea and of course my boy tried to swim after it to retrieve it. I shouted out to let it go, as we would end up carried over to Fraser Island in the strong tide. The drone was lost to the sea. A tiny Titanic. My boy started sobbing. I was upset as I had a long walk back to the champagne. Epic fail! So next time, dear big brother, please send this unfit mother a gift that requires minimal supervision. My brother and I grew up playing with marbles and sling shots and you could never bust them. On second thoughts, maybe just send a book.

Why? Often, it’s down to not knowing what local services and support is available to them, leaving them going without or unnecessarily travelling long distances to metropolitan areas. But the good news is there are often more resources available to them than they realise. They just have to know where to look! Regional Disability Expos (RDEs) are events aimed at bringing the disability community together to celebrate life, share and experience the latest technologies with a large variety of exhibitors under one roof. As a member of the community in relatively good health you may ask, “Why would I want to attend a disability expo? I’m not disabled, and nor are any of my loved ones.” However, have you thought

Isn’t that what living on the Sunshine Coast is all about? As Miriam (an RDE attendee) says, “Well done to the organisers and companies that attended the expo. Someone asked me recently what motivated me and other Real Community Services (RCS) staff. It’s a simple enough question, right? “Easy,” I said. “I, like all our staff, love finding out who the person is and how we can help someone live the life they want.” The person asking the question laughed and threw a harder question at me: “And how do you make sure you practise what you preach?” That question made me think – how do we? SERVICE DRIVES CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF MANY Retirement years holidaying and playing with grandchildren were what Tina and Jim wanted for themselves. Then their youngest daughter Joanna’s third child was born with a disability. As young retirees they helped their daughter and granddaughter as much as they could but became worn out. Branching into online training is just one way the college is expanding opportunities for young people with a disability or autism. Supported by STEPS Charity, the community can now take part in STEPS’ Sponsor a Student program designed to alleviate the financial shortfall left by the NDIS. “I never wanted us to be at a stage where we had these opportunities, but we were limited in who we could help access this experience,” Ms Crouch says. “The fact that so many essential services were becoming even harder to access only amplified our drive to make our program available online, so that every young adult with a disability or autism could have an equal chance of leading the life they want.” The new online program is joining another previous extension of the program’s availability – the STEPS Pathways College day program. The day program allows students to learn independence skills during the day and practise these skills at night in the familiarity of their home. Courses can be taken from one day

to five days a week, and students have the chance to learn everything from social skills and regulating emotions to practical cooking and cleaning skills. The online and day programs can also be taken together as a form of blended learning, which was created to ensure that the program could be adapted to any need of the students. “We have structured the program to ensure that our students can approach their tailored education at their own speed, with their own needs or requirements never holding them back in their journey to independence,” STEPS Pathways College CEO Anne Nioa says. “Our students are able to leave the college with lessons in independence and well on their way to living by themselves. “Students are also able to re-join us in our more intensive boarding program, or segue there from the day or online program, and graduate into the community as independent and confident young adults.”

CREATING CLEVER SOLUTIONS WITH HEART Primary School students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College are learning how to be innovative ‘future thinkers’ with heart. Through new curriculum programs, students from Prep to Year six are using design thinking and a sense of social justice to solve real-world problems. Flinders Head of Primary Trudi Edwards says the school is committed to being a leading school in design thinking. “Through two of our signature programs, I-Care and i-Impact, our students are essentially learning how to help make the world a better place,” she says. “It’s exciting to see our young learners embrace the steps of design thinking. This is how they arrive at innovative and entrepreneurial solutions, guided by their purpose to do good in the world.” Year six students applied design thinking to classroom i-Impact project, ‘Use Solar as the Solution’. The students empathised and ideated solutions for our most vulnerable community members.

Year six teacher Katie Dawson says, “Students were proud of the way their innovative solutions helped make daily life safer and more independent for the user.” The designs included proximity sensors to alert of a baby in danger; alarms and LED lights that flashed when a user had a fall; self-opening bottle openers to help overcome fine motor disabilities; and solar-powered safes for keeping possessions safe. Meanwhile, students in Year four are being ‘erosion engineers’ to design a mountain biking track fit for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

NCC CONTINUES TO SERVE IN OUR BACKYARD Nambour Christian College (NCC) endeavours to live by its motto ‘Sow to Harvest’, and this is especially true when it comes to the school’s service trips program. SPRING MEGA AUCTION EVENT Ray White is holding a huge auction event and anticipates much interest from buyers far and wide. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ll Ray White agencies from every corner of the Coast are preparing for one huge residential property auction day to kick off the traditionally busy spring selling season. On September 19, The Auction Event will have the widest selection of property ever offered on the Coast on one day, says Ray White Maroochydore director and auctioneer Dan Sowden. He expects across the almost 60 properties there will be something for every buyer with all types of property being bought to the market. There will be an entry-level apartment in the university precinct at Sippy Downs. “Great for an investor or first homebuyer,” Mr Sowden says. At the other end of the scale there is an expansive home in Maroochydore. “It may break $2 million,” he adds. Mr Sowden says the event will be advantageous for buyers. They get to be in one location to attend multiple auctions. “In some cases, the buyer might miss out on one property and then move onto the next one on the same day,” he says. “The event collapses the time frame the buyers need to be looking in the market.”

USC SPARTANS TAKING OLYMPICS BY STORM

Sunshine Coast Lightning coach Kylee Byrne says there is “so much upside” for the team, after signing for another two years. Byrne steered the team to this year’s Super Netball finals, before they bowed out to West Coast Fever. Her contact extension was announced as part of Lightning’s fifth birthday celebrations. The club has featured in finals every season, including premierships in 2017 and 2018. Byrne has been with the Lightning since its inception, as assistant coach to Noeline Taurua from 2017 to 2019, before being promoted for 2020 and 2021. She eagerly anticipated campaigns with the team in 2022 and 2023. “I have an incredible amount of faith in what this team is capable of and there is so much upside that we are yet to see from this core group,” Byrne said in a club press release. “I am honoured to be the head coach for at least another two seasons at Lightning and can’t wait to explore ways in which we can innovate and improve again next year to be even better.” Byrne has been involved in coaching for more than 15 years across a range of pathways with Queensland Firebirds, Netball Queensland, Australian Institute of Sport and Netball Australia. She is the current coach of the Australian under-21 side. Lightning CEO Danielle Smith was thrilled to secure the services of Byrne for another two seasons. “Lightning is in great hands under an

excellent technical coach,” she said. “What makes her a great coach is the combination of her sharp analytical mind as well as her people-first mentality and holistic approach. “Kylee was a key part of not only establishing the club and its culture, but also in continuing to drive standards and accountability across the group. “What continues to impress me about Kylee is her dedication to personal and professional development and her innate ability to connect with our people in and around the club – be they a player, colleague, sponsor or one of our beloved members.” While the Lightning are no longer in the hunt for this year’s title, Smith lauded the club for its achievements in recent years. “Every day this club and it’s people fill me with pride and I feel privileged to play my role at Lightning and to contribute to its culture and ongoing success,” she said. “Lightning were up against time and resource constraints when we first joined the Super Netball competition, so to see the evolution and prosperity of this club now is incredible. “While the athletes, coaches and staff are the engine room of this great club, part of what makes it so incredible is the true commitment of the wider Lightning family – which includes our members, partners, fans and the Sunshine Coast community.” – Steele Taylor, Sunshine Coast News

en athletes affiliated with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) have arrived in Tokyo for the Paralympic Games, which began with an opening ceremony on Tuesday. Six of the athletes – Ben Hance, Blake Cochrane, Braedan Jason, Katja Dedekind, Keira Stephens and Ruby Storm – are USC Spartans swimmers, while one is former Spartans swimmer Ellie Cole who completed a cross-institutional degree while at USC. The contingent also includes USC graduate and wheelchair basketballer Hannah Dodd, cyclist Alistair Donohoe who trains with the USC-based Pro Racing Sunshine Coast, and wheelchair rugby player Chris Bond, who receives coaching and training advice from USC’s High Performance Sport academics. Katja Dedekind, a USC Bachelor of Arts student, is eager to compete at her second Paralympics after winning bronze in 100m backstroke in Rio when she was just 15. She says attending the Games with such a large group from USC, including Spartans coach Nathan Doyle, will help her stay relaxed ahead of her events in 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 400m freestyle. “To be heading to Tokyo with the

people that I see every day and I swim with, I think it’s going to make it much easier to be away from home for so long,” she says. “They’re like my second family now. “I actually don’t have a dream job out of swimming. I think I am living that dream where I get to be an athlete 24/7 and I get to go and represent my country at the Paralympics, not just for the first time, but for the second time as well.”
