Taylor Moss is undeniably fast becoming the queen of country-pop. The fresh-faced, happy-go-lucky singer’s most recent hit has reached 1.2 million streams on Spotify – not a bad achievement for a Sunshine Coast girl who began her career performing covers at local supportive venues. This week, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw chats with Taylor about overcoming recent hurdles to continue on the path of success. You can read the story on page eight. For Taylor, performing live at local venues has provided her with many positive opportunities, and she isn’t alone. Numerous talented musicians credit festivals and venues as the springboard they needed to launch their careers – to have their art heard, and a means to put food on the table. It is one of the industries that has

continually suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the need for public health safety guidelines. But this week, the issue of fairness has been raised with the shock closure of the live music portion of the Sunshine Coast’s popular NightQuarter (story page 14). The news created an outcry of support for NightQuarter operators and performers, all who champion for the local music scene. COVID safety plans and social distancing must be adhered to for public safety, but when will we start to see consistency in regulations and allowances? The answer remains to be seen. Pain in the neck Wait times for elective surgery on the Sunshine Coast are so long, many locals are being referred to Brisbane hospitals. Words: Kat Donaghey.

atients languishing in pain on lengthy waiting lists at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) are getting the life-changing public surgery they need within weeks by opting to go to Brisbane. Off work and bed-bound with debilitating nerve pain, Dave Hawkins was told he would have to wait 27 months for orthopaedic surgery at SCUH, but only four weeks at Brisbane’s Mater. The Mountain Creek man has suffered since Easter Monday with radiculopathy — a pinching of the nerve root in the spine which renders him unable to move around without “electric” jolts of pain. But SCUH relegated him to a less urgent Category 3. He was told he would have to put up with the excruciating condition for more than two years before he could get the necessary surgery. However, as a public patient at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital, which prioritised him as a more urgent Category 2, he was

told it would only be a four-week wait after seeing the surgeon. He has secured an appointment for July 14. Mr Hawkins says his GP had sent referrals to both hospitals because the doctor was aware of the extreme wait times at SCUH and was urging his patients to pursue the Mater as a quicker alternative. There were 4227 patients on the SCUH waiting list for elective surgery in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter. Most of them had been classified as less urgent Category 3. Category 3 should include conditions with “minimal or no pain, dysfunction or disability, which is unlikely to get worse quickly” and patients should have surgery within 365 days of being added to the list. Only 272 were listed as Category 1 while 1156 were considered Category 2. A spokesperson for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service says as at May 1, the average wait time for elective orthopaedic surgery was 152 days. Mr Hawkins says it is unbelievable that

his pain, which is so bad he cannot work or function normally, had been lumped in as Category 3. It’s not the first time Mr Hawkins has experienced this anguish. For 18 months he waited for hip surgery, as his left hip socket ground with bone on bone and was told it would be another 18 months after that. He paid $20,000 (drawn from his super) for life-changing surgery at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. Local Medical Association president Dr Roger Faint says he is “shocked” that one patient could be ranked in two different categories at different hospitals. “It makes a mockery of the grading system if it is open to interpretation.” Dr Faint says the region’s growth has caused bed blockages, long waits, full theatres and public patients being sent private. In December, the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service received a share of the Queensland Government’s $250 million funding to clear the elective surgery backlog created by COVID-19. A spokesperson says, “Since November 2020, additional elective orthopaedic sessions have been conducted at Nambour General Hospital, enabling more of the complex surgeries to be performed at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Mr Hawkins says the long and painful wait for hip surgery had been so demoralising it left him needing antidepression medication. “Telling me it’s going to take 27 months for this surgery, they may as well not bother lying to me and just say it’s never going to happen. All I want is for someone to fix me up and get me back to work.”

Top jobs... how much do we earn? As the latest financial year comes to an end, new statistics from the ATO show it isn’t easy to crack the elusive $200,000 mark. WORDS: Staff writers with AAP.

he average Australian earns a little over $60,000 according to new figures. And, if you want to sit amongst the top 10 earners list, you will need to set your career aspirations high. The latest statistics from the Australian Taxation Office reveal the average taxable income for 2018/19 was $62,549. The issue of gender pay gap has once again come to the forefront, with the figures showing the average man earned $73,219 compared with $51,382 for women. There was also a wide gap between genders for the average superannuation account balances. The average balance for males was $162,275 compared with $128,068 for females. The overall average was $143,979. Medical occupations head the list of top earners, with four of the top five working within the industry. Surgeons on average earn a taxable income of $394,303, followed by anaesthetists on $386,065 and ‘internal medicine specialists’ on $304,752. These careers are followed by financial dealers on $275,984, then psychiatrists on $235,558.

Keep in mind, it’s not easy to reach these income levels, with only 510,000 Australians out of 14.7 million individuals reporting a taxable income of $180,000 or more. The figures come as Australians prepare to file their latest tax returns. According to the ATO, most Australians do their tax return through a tax agent, with 66.8 per cent choosing this method in 2018/19 compared to 32.1 per cent who did it themselves through the myTax website. The average net tax paid was $19,344 – $23,366 by males and $14,687 by females. Interestingly, around 6.1 million people, or 41.7 per cent of taxpayers, pay 30 per cent of Australia’s taxes, while only the 3.5 per cent of people who earn above $180,000 contribute 31.5 per cent of taxes. Work-related expenses topped the list of tax deductions in 2018/19, with 8.9 million people receiving a $2331 rebate. This was followed by just under six million people who received an average $332 for professional management of their tax affairs.

How does the Coast shape up? Data from the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics Census (2016) reports that there were 163,202 people in the labour force in the week before Census night in the Sunshine Coast statistical area. Of these, 52 per cent were employed full-time, 36.1 per cent were employed part-time and 7.1 per cent were unemployed. Eight-and-a-half per cent of the population earned an income of $1750 or more per week ($91,000 per year), while 8.1 per cent sat in the $52,000 to $64,900 per year bracket. The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over was $612 and $1478 for total family income. Of the employed people on the Sunshine Coast, 4.2 per cent worked in hospitals (except psychiatric hospitals), 3.3 per cent in cafes and restaurants, 2.7 per cent in aged care residential services, 2.7 per cent in supermarket/grocery stores and 2.4 per cent in primary education. Enjoy sugar? You could soon be paying for it… A 20 per cent tax would be slapped on all sugary drinks under a plan from Australia's doctors to save lives and boost health coffers. Australian Medical Association president Omar Khorshid has unveiled plans for a radical rethink of how health is funded after the coronavirus pandemic. The average price of drinks with no nutritional value would rise by 20 per cent in a bid to drive down rates of diabetes, obesity and poor vascular health. A research paper from the AMA predicts the tax would lead to 16,000 fewer cases of type two diabetes, 4400 fewer cases of heart disease and 1100 fewer strokes over 25 years. With the end of the financial year on the horizon, the ATO is warning it will be taking particular note of work-related expenses. Around 8.5 million people claimed nearly $19.4 billion in work-related expenses in their 2020 tax returns. Australian Taxation Office assistant commissioner Tim Loh says the COVID-19 pandemic has changed people’s work habits, so he expects their work-related expenses will reflect this. “We know many people started working from home during COVID-19, so a jump in these claims is expected,” Mr Loh says. “But, if you are working at home, we would not expect to see claims for travelling between worksites, laundering uniforms or business trips.” The ATO’s data analytics will be on the lookout for unusually high claims, particularly where someone’s deductions are much higher than others with a similar job and income. “We will also look closely at anyone with significant working from home expenses, that maintains or increases their

WOMEN TO SHARE CEO ROLE

DAD’S DEATH INSPIRES RECORD Coast swimmer Kaylee McKeown says the death of her father inspired her to break the 100-metre backstroke world record. The 19-year-old USC Spartans swimmer set a world benchmark at Australia’s Olympic trials in Adelaide on Sunday night. McKeown clocked 57.45 seconds in the 100-metre backstroke final, bettering the previous world record of 57.57 set by American, Regan Smith in 2019. McKeown’s father Sholto passed away in August last year from brain cancer. He was aged 53. “With COVID and the passing of my dad in August last year, it has been a huge build-up to these trials,” she says. “And I have turned it into a bit of a hunger and motivation behind me. I use it every day that I wake up. I know it’s a privilege to be on this earth and walk and talk. So to get up and do that tonight is not really for me but my family.” – AAP

“THEY HAVEN’T DONE THIS TO ANYONE ELSE” Over 400 jobs are in jeopardy and the owners of live music venue the NightQuarter are heartbroken after the shock closure of their music venue.

he operators of the awardwinning NightQuarter entertainment precinct have vowed to continue their support of the live music industry despite being left devastated by the shock shutdown of their music space. Last Friday night, Queensland Health officers accompanied by Queensland Police served notice claiming the venue posed an unacceptable risk to public health given the COVID situation and ordered them to close the live entertainment venue immediately. The order would be in effect “until the end of the declared public health emergency’’, or until approved controls were put in place. The direction did not relate to the night market, only the concert space within the precinct. Speaking with My Weekly Preview this week, NightQuarter’s Michelle Christoe says Queensland Health has “ripped the lifeblood” from the business and jeopardised the livelihood of 400 Sunshine Coast people. She and partner Ian Van Der Woude deny any breach. They say the concert in question had been managed in accordance with their COVID Safe Plan. “We’ve had to cancel a million dollars’

worth of events this past year,” Ms Christoe says. “This venue supports over 400 jobs. We are talking about a lot of jobs for the Sunshine Coast. The people we employ own small businesses. They live week to week, some of these people, and they didn’t anticipate this loss of income. “We had two ticketed events we had to cancel. People come in from out of town for these. There is the trickle-down effect. People had to cancel accommodation. It affects tourism, too. “They haven’t done this to anyone else. I have spoken to other venues and Queensland Health haven’t even visited them. We have had officials here almost

every weekend. Anyone who has worked with us closely know how seriously we take COVID. I can say hand over my heart that I’ve done the best I can.” Ms Christoe says the organisation will continue supporting local and national talent in some shape or form. “How is sport different to a live music event? I love sport,” she says. “I’m not trying to kill sport, but what we’ve been through, we’ve been targeted because we’ve spoken out on behalf of the music industry for so long. We are passionate about it. We can’t control people’s social distancing if it’s not consistent everywhere [at every type of event]. We work to our approved plan, we

work with patrons to enforce the plan.” Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young says the shutdown relates to “repeated breaches” of COVID safety rules which the health department had tried to get rectified. “We have worked closely with the operators of NightQuarter for several months in an attempt to help them continue operating in accordance with the Queensland Public Health Directions. “However, there have been repeated breaches of these directions and several complaints by members of the community in relation to occupant density and physical distancing requirements during events.” The standing event in question had been modified to include fixed allocated seating after consultation with Queensland Health in April and was managed with detailed briefings with staff and security, signage and event management plans. Dr Young said in a statement the risk of COVID-19 transmission in confined spaces such as stage and dance areas was “far greater” than the risk at open-air venues like sporting stadiums. Ms Christoe and Mr Van Der Woude have requested to meet with Queensland Health and Health Minister Yvette D’Ath.

he face of 92.7 MIX FM’s Give Me 5 appeal, nine-year-old Lucas Bennett, is throwing his full support behind helping sick children just like him. Lucas has Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting the heart and causing development delays, low muscle tone and learning challenges. The inspirational Bli Bli youngster is sharing his story to help raise funds for the appeal, which runs over the month of June. Lucas has had a harrowing year in and out of hospital with respiratory viruses and infections and due to his condition needs a feeding tube to keep his weight up. He also needs extensive therapy. Lucas’ mum Lauren says despite her son’s energetic and outgoing nature, his anxiety increases when he is in hospital. “William’s Syndrome is complex. It’s a journey of constant appointments and an emotional rollercoaster, but we are trying to find our way,” she says. “You never imagine that you might need the help of your local hospital, but sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you find yourself on the children’s ward. “During our stays we have been so lucky to have the Clown Doctors visit to help ease Lucas’ anxiety, plus other distraction resources like the interactive screens, iPads and activities. I’ll never be able to express how those little things make such a big difference.” Unfortunately, there is no cure for Williams Syndrome, so patients like Lucas must continually be monitored and treated for symptoms through their lives.

This year’s Give Me 5 appeal is raising funds for a neonatal resuscitation system, an interactive play area for children undergoing day procedures, distraction therapy and ongoing funding for the Wishlist-funded Clown Doctor service to bring smiles and laughter to young patients. The appeal will also raise funds for an innovative parental support and youth advisory group program to support young adults and provide a circle-of-care for mental health patients in the new Wishlist Centre to open opposite SCUH next year.

Sunshine Coast retailer Roz White, of White’s IGA, has shared her emotional story after donating $4000 to 92.7 MIX FM’s Give Me 5 appeal and thanking one of the Coast’s top paediatric doctors, Dr Tom Hurley. “Dr Tom Hurley is the most amazing man,” Ms White says. “Our 23-year-old son, when he was two years old, he contracted bacterial meningitis and we almost lost our boy. It was touch and go, and Dr Hurley saved his life.” Dr Hurley is supporting this year’s month-long fundraising appeal to raise funds for a young adult mental health program, which will operate out of Wishlist’s new project Wishlist Centre, to open opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital next year. “We have some very big items this year, and we are very much looking at youth and mental health on the Coast,” Dr Hurley says. “Because we know with COVID and the stresses around these days, it’s big, there are a lot of young people suffering with mental health issues. “We have a tsunami of young people with eating disorders, and we have a lot of young people suffering. We see it in clinics, we see it in our outpatients, in our emergency departments – young people are coming in with the many faces of anxiety, whether it be depression, self-harm, eating disorders. It’s a really big problem.”

600 children saved A new CEO has joined Destiny Rescue and wants the organisation to help end the exploitation and trafficking of children in our lifetime. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Sunshine Coast-based organisation helping free children from exploitation and trafficking around the world has welcomed a new leader to spearhead operations. Paul Mergard has been announced as the CEO of Destiny Rescue after finding his “calling” to help children often “robbed of their potential”. With 20 years’ experience working in not-for-profits and advocating against human trafficking in southeast Asia, Mr Mergard joined Destiny Rescue in 2019 as the executive partnerships manager. “I’ve always had this sense of calling to do something about the issue of human trafficking,” he says. “When I became aware of the issue it was just one of those things that has gripped me. “Helping children reach their potential is often robbed from kids at a very young age through exploitation and trafficking.” As CEO, Mr Mergard says he has two main goals to help free children from sexual

exploitation, slavery and human trafficking. “We really see ourselves as playing a leading role in ending the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children in our lifetime. “We need to bring awareness to people about how sexual exploitation happens. “What we don’t realise here in Australia is so many of our actions in some way can cause children to be enslaved.” Mr Mergard says Aussies can unknowingly contribute to child exploitation by purchasing products made in sweat shops or visiting bars and venues in Asia where trafficked children and young women work. “It’s amazing some of the people I talk to who say, ‘I’ve been to that karaoke bar’. “I think sometimes people don’t realise what they are doing, so we want to raise awareness for where that happens.” Another goal is to increase fundraising, as Destiny Rescue is currently limited with the number of children it can help. “We know there are kids we can help,

specialist local police in several countries across Asia and Africa to save children and shut down operations. Teams often put their own safety at risk, working under dangerous circumstances where criminal gangs are involved, and in countries suffering political turmoil. Rescuing almost 600 youth this year, children are then put through a personalised rehabilitation program, and where possible, sent back to immediate family or relatives and put through school or vocational training. “So far in 2021, we have seen 596 rescues across eight nations that we work in,” Mr Mergard says. “Of these rescues, 275 have been on the Nepal border of people being trafficked into a neighbouring country. “We have launched operations into Uganda, in east Africa and have seen 99 rescues so far this year.” Destiny Rescue is marking 20 years since establishing here on the Sunshine Coast and, with the organisation’s head office in Warana, Mr Mergard says a recent cultural shift is seeing more local community support. “It’s great to reconnect with the community here on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “In the last two years we have made some big changes in the way we operate, which has been great to see some significant growth in the organisation.”

Destiny Rescue operates in Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Nepal, Dominican Republic, Uganda and several undisclosed nations to free children from exploitation. aylor Moss has had an epiphany. At just 26, she has been a working musician since she first set foot in a recording studio at the age of 15 and has never slowed down. But this year, she was forced to not only slow down, but to stop singing completely after she underwent vocal surgery. She took 10 weeks off to recuperate and realised it was time to drop the covers and start focusing on her original music. The Tewantin country-pop performer is a stalwart of the Sunshine Coast music scene and has made a living from performing covers, while gradually building

her profile as an original recording artist, visiting Nashville a number of times on self-funded trips to refine her art. But with chart successes bolstering her confidence, she has now come into her own. “Personally, I feel the surgery was a bit of a blessing,” she say. “I’ve been working flat out in the industry for 10 years and never really had time off. I’m at a stage in my life where more than anything, I want to be vulnerable, more open and connect with an audience. I feel I can connect more by speaking my truth. I love sitting in a room full of people, or even showing my mum a song I’ve just written, and pouring my heart out.” Ms Moss’ most recent single, Ain’t No Girly Girl, recently reached 1.2 million streams on Spotify and she’s about to perform her first show of all-original material at the upcoming Red Hot Country Music Festival on June 25. “Ain’t No Girly Girl is definitely a bit of a girl anthem,” she says. “I wrote that song as a bit of a statement to say, ‘you know what? Girls can drive a ute, go fishing, go camping, enjoy drinking a rum and still be absolutely beautiful inside and out.’ I’ve grown up around all those things; I’m a country girl at heart. I dress like a girl, but I’m a big tomboy. “I really would love to be a role model for young women. I want them to look at me and listen to my music and feel strong,

powerful and beautiful. I think every single human on this earth should feel worthy. Women in this day and age have such an expectation to feel and do things in a certain way. At the end of the day, we’re all unique and human.” Ms Moss is currently enjoying being young and single, living on her own in Tewantin and channelling every spare second into her career. “I love life and I’m just enjoying my own company,” she says.

“I want [young women] to look at me and listen to my music and feel strong” “I’m married to my music. Your twenties are a really good time for personal growth. How you grow as a person is being superindependent and not needing anybody. “I’m writing two songs a week at the moment and my ultimate goal is to be the most successful independent country-pop artist in Australia. While there are definitely benefits to being signed to a label, I want to stay independent as long as possible, because I have control over what I do.” Eight months ago, TV personality Ian

‘Dicko’ Dickson offered to manage Ms Moss because she is, in his words, “talented, likeable and marketable”. “The one thing Dicko said when he started working with me was that he wants me to be authentically myself as much as I can. He said, your personality sells your music. He has not once tried to change me. If anything, he has tried to encourage me to be even more comfortable in my own skin than I already have been.” For someone so young, Ms Moss is full of confidence and belief in herself and it’s not hard to picture her reaching the heights of success in her chosen career. She’s energetic and bubbly with a high-octane personality that has led some to dub her the ‘Energizer bunny’. “I recently wrote a song called Too Much. One verse in the song is, ‘I’ve been made aware I’m exhausting, my confidence is overbearing and I’m annoying.’ I’m aware I am too much and that’s not my issue; that’s someone else’s issue,” she laughs. “I would say my brain is like scrambled eggs, 24/7. My brain is full of metaphors, ideas, concepts, branding…it doesn’t switch off. I’m passionate and I have a vision. I want to connect with my fans on a personal level, whether that’s actually getting to know them one by one or connecting with them on a musical level. I also want to go back to Nashville. “As soon as we can travel again, I’m

there. It’s a really inspiring place to be. Everyone there has the same goal and the same dream and every single person supports each other. “If I could sell out a venue with a couple of thousand people, I would be the happiest girl alive.” For now, she’s focused on rehearsing for her shows at the Gympie Music Muster in August and future shows. “Over the last two months, I’ve been focusing on building my Taylor Moss original show with my own band. They are a talented bunch of boys who are focused on the project… “To find the right musicians who are dedicated to the project is actually really tough. I’ll be showcasing my singles but I always want to show people my new songs. The show is full of new material that has never been heard before.”

Bowel cancer survivor Sally Kriel, pictured with her two young sons, is sharing her story to help other parents facing a diagnosis

THANK YOU BLOOMHILL When Sally Kriel received a devastating diagnosis, Bloomhill Cancer Care was there to support her and her family. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

ally Kriel’s two young boys were by her side when she was delivered the news, “I’m sorry you have cancer”. The bowel cancer diagnosis came when Ms Kriel was just 38. As part of the month-long Be There for

Bloomhill campaign, and to coincide with Red Apple Day (bowel cancer awareness day) on June 16, Ms Kriel is sharing her story in the hope of inspiring other young parents facing a cancer diagnosis. Thankfully for the Sunshine Coast

nurse of 18 years, the cancer was caught early and after major surgery she did not require chemotherapy. “When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I had an 18-month-old and three-year-old,” she says. “My greatest drive for recovery and ultimately survival was my wish to be the mum that I had always wanted to be. I wanted to be there for my children and for my husband.” With no guide on how to parent while she was unwell, Ms Kriel had to navigate her way through parenting during her 12-month recovery. “Through my diagnosis, I have discovered that the resources and support services for younger parents are lacking. A lot of patient information and funding is targeted at older adults. “I didn’t have a guide to ‘parent from the lounge’. On a day-to-day basis I learned from trial and error.” A few weeks post-surgery, Ms Kriel reached out to Bloomhill Cancer Care to receive the support she and her family needed. “I had heard from colleagues that Bloomhill was a fantastic organisation that supports cancer patients and their families, of all ages. I needed to connect with a team who really understood the emotional and physical needs of a cancer patients at home. “I needed advice on how to make my recovery easier so that I could get back to my life.” Ms Kriel has no family history of bowel cancer and says her only symptoms were bloating and intermittent stomach pain for a month before deciding to visit her GP. Her boys, now six and four, have come to enjoy visiting Bloomhill with their mother. “My boys absolutely love the

Bloomhill volunteers who look after them during my appointments,” Ms Kriel says. “I don’t have to organise or pay for babysitting; they just come with me and we all have an outing.” To support the Bloomhill campaign, visit www.bloomhill.com.au.

Ms Kriel’s tips for dealing with a cancer diagnosis • Link in with a good GP who understands you and your needs. • Ask your questions: Ask lots of questions until you have all the facts and understand your condition, the treatments, and recovery times. • Nourish your mind: Make a point of surrounding yourself with positive stories. Develop a daily practice to nourish your mind – meditation, gratitude, journalling (whatever resonates with you). • Accept support: Delegate anything you can. teenager with a passion for the environment is hoping the community will join in at an event to help reduce rubbish in the region. Visionary Ocean Warriors founder Poppy Ives is organising Spring into

Scavenge on June 26 and is inviting the community to clean up the local area. “Participating in the Seaside Scavenge Spring into Scavenge program has given me extra confidence and knowledge to reach out to our local community on the issues of marine debris,” Poppy says. “It is a fun way to engage the community in beach clean-ups.” The scavenge involves a waterway clean-up where litter collected can be swapped for trash tokens to purchase quality pre-loved clothes, books and bric-a-brac on the day. Participants will also learn how to separate and catalogue rubbish to capture data for the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris initiative. There will be an educational recycling game for younger children and Visionary Ocean Warriors will have a no-sew station to turn old shirts into reusable bags. NORTH ARM STUDENTS GET WATER WISE Students from North Arm State School last month attended a Kids in Action Environmental Project Day at Ewen Maddock Dam. Students took part in a variety of hands-on learning activities and Year five student Olivia says her favourite was future water dreaming. “We had a water problem to solve,” Olivia says. “We had to find out how much water to give to each town and still have enough water left in the river. “Each of us had a chance to figure out how we would do it and then the group chose the best solution.”

The activities were a chance to build relationships and learn from Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara Traditional Custodians along with other First Nations People and environmental specialists. Students will now work together at school guided by their teacher Vickie Jaenke and other mentors on their own project aimed at inspiring other young people to learn and care for the environment. In September, the students will present their project to other schools at the Kids Teaching Kids Conference at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens.

A mother and daughter duo is offering a way to relieve the stresses of life through dance. Kate and Lucy Holzer started No Lights No Lycra in March, allowing participants the chance to dance in the dark each week and forget the world around them. “The darkness creates a certain kind of magic that forces you to forget about what you or the people around you look like, so that your brain can shut off and your body can move with the beat,” Mrs Holzer says. “It’s the perfect place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself.” The weekly classes, based in Mountain Creek, have been growing in numbers. Mrs Holzer says she was inspired to create the outlet after looking for something to escape her own busy life. “I’m a teacher by day and the thought of going to the gym or for a jog after work doesn’t always appeal to me. But the thought of going for a boogie will get me every time.” She says No Lights No Lycra is a great way to keep fit without the feeling of self-consciousness. “I love that I don’t have to remember steps or worry about what others think of my dodgy dance moves. “People often come in a little nervously if it’s their first time but as soon as those lights go out, they lose that feeling of

fter a year-long trip to America in 2008 and returning home with a love of burgers and less than $1000 between them, a Queensland couple has turned a food passion into a reality. Some 13 years and 17 stores later,

Brent and Amy Poulter’s company Getta Burger continues to grow, and locals can now get their hands on a mouth-watering feed at the new Warana store. Mr Poulter, who also owns the recently opened Cach Song in Noosa, and Low N Slow Meat Co in Brisbane, says

Getta Burger came about after an idea to start a food truck eight years ago. “It took us about three or four years to do something about our passion that we found in America.” Eventually that passion led to Mr Poulter spending 18 months building his food truck, That Barbecue Joint, in his backyard. “About six months into that we thought we would develop into another brand and see if we could sell a few burgers to pay the rent. So, that’s where we started Getta Burger.” When choosing destinations for a store, Mr Poulter says he liked the idea of giving customers who live in the suburbs the chance to enjoy something usually found in the city and hoped to open more Sunshine Coast stores in the future. “We like to operate in areas such as Warana where great people live and giving an experience you’d traditionally have to go to the city for. We tend to fill that burger gap in that space. “With Warana looking the way it is has definitely spiked some interest in me to continue to master plan the Sunshine Coast and get a few more up and running.” Getta Burger is at Shop 6, 179 Nicklin Way, Warana.

TOWERS TURNED ON Residents in Baringa, Bellvista, Caloundra West and Glenview are now enjoying improved mobile phone reception, including 5G connectivity, thanks to the switching on of two new Telstra towers. After advocating for the towers, Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says it is “terrific news” for residents in Baringa and Glenview who have been struggling with connectivity for years. “I started receiving complaints from local residents in Baringa about their lack of mobile phone reception almost as soon as the suburb’s first houses were built,” Mr Wallace says. The towers are located at 469 Old Caloundra Road, Glenview, and in the land east of Baringa State Secondary College, and will ensure consistent 5G coverage across the Aura development, Bells Creek, Meridan Plains and Glenview. 5G mobile technology allows large downloads to be completed in seconds, along with seamless streaming of multi-media content.

And they will do it on the internet, where nothing ever really disappears. While we can talk all we like about being mindful of their future, how many 18-year-olds are living as if they will be squarely in the international spotlight in nine years’ time? Not many, I say. And not many can imagine how something they think is witty today will be interpreted, let alone seen through their own adult eyes. Robinson found that out the hard way. Digital natives have it tough, where past behaviour is concerned and it is only going to get tougher. They are the first generation to have a life so meticulously documented in a public space. But they can’t say they didn’t know – they are instructed and warned at every turn about being responsible for what they post, their online interactions, their responsibilities to each other. It is ingrained in every message they get from the authoritative world: police warn about sexting, schools warn about bullying, their mums warn them about posting pictures that feature a dearth of clothing. But still the power of the peer and the smell of teen spirit is stronger. Cases of adolescent stupidity and insensitivity is vastly different from full-grown adults doing dumb things and sharing it with the world. The internet might be endless, but its bounds are not. Nothing is ever lost and everything is within the bounds of the law. And if social media has helped build a person’s profile, it can also tear them down. The internet remembers everything.

THE INTERNET WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR YOUTHFUL INDISCRETIONS In the future, will we regret that Facebook post, that clever quip on Twitter or that hot-headed retort sent in a fit of such fury that the keyboard almost caught fire? Consider the recent case of poor English fast bowler Ollie Robinson, who had a searing debut for his country against New Zealand, taking four wickets in the first innings, three in the second and scoring a handy number of runs. It was a dashing start for a rising star, except that Robinson has now been sent packing from the English camp after a handful of puerile social media posts he made at age 18 and 19 were disinterred. They were racist, sexist silliness – the kind young men post to humour their mates. But they were enough for the England and Wales cricket board to suspend him from all international cricket, pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation. It is hard to imagine that many of the younger generation will escape their formative years without doing something

adly, there was a joke going around last week before Origin one in Townsville that had a sign saying ‘Welcome to Origin, park your car here, pick it up over there after the game’, which was in reference to the current crime spree in the north. The thing is it’s not just in the north but all over the state and it seems a lot of it is youth. Of course in general our youth are wonderful, but a growing minority of badly behaved young teenagers with no respect for anything is a growing concern and we all need to be careful that it doesn’t become the majority. Which baffles me when you see parts of the state government mulling over whether they need to lift the age of prosecution to 14, which would mean only one thing: a mathematical reduction of crime numbers, because they couldn’t be prosecuted. I find that astounding when you can walk the streets and see poor behaviour, vandalism and lack of respect with no fear of consequences. A light bulb moment by a government who can say they reduced the crime figures when in fact they are just manipulating the numbers. Go and sit in a park and witness some

of the behaviour; now imagine what it will be like if they have no fear of prosecution until they are over 14. I have been silly enough to ask a kid to stop vandalising something and the standard response is to roll out the paedophile call. If that doesn’t convince you, put yourself in the driver’s seat of a public bus operator and watch kids jump on, tell the driver they have no money but you can’t kick me off and then disrespect the driver and paying passengers. Who would drive a bus? I take my hat off to them. Maybe it should be a gold coin donation to The Daniel Morcombe Foundation as minimum fare, which at least would be a positive. Being involved in footy, surf lifesaving and sport in general, I have always thought it very worthwhile as you meet some wonderful youth. It is rewarding, but the way we are going they are going to be outnumbered unless we are all strong enough to put a line in the sand to stop what is nearly at pandemic levels. Mortimer J Adler said, “True freedom is impossible without a mind made free by discipline.” Amen to that.

he world is changing rapidly. Mobile phones accompany us everywhere. Siri and Google can answer most questions for us and what did we do before the invention of the internet? Autograph books are basically obsolete. So too are phone books. But I had a lovely reminder this week that some things remain the same in our lives. I went to the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show in Nambour and it made me stop and think some things have not changed. We just need to look for them. I took much joy in showing my kids sideshow alley. Okay, the prices have changed, but they still have the clowns and the fishing game and the game where you shoot metal little milk cans over. Except you cannot shoot the cans over, as I am pretty sure they are weighed down in some dodgy trick set up to rip off kids and parents alike. We ate dagwood dogs, which my children kept calling ‘downward dogs’, and we watched the fireworks with a feeling of total satisfaction after spending the day roaming the showgrounds in a fog of nostalgia laughing at all of the entertainment. In my family, we still carry on with

another tradition. I was raised with the family roast on a Sunday night. There is something very cathartic about eating roast potatoes and meat covered in gravy that is good for the soul. The duck fat does not hurt my soul either, although it may be hurting my cholesterol levels. And my kids have just discovered fishing. Another pastime from when I was a kid that is still a hugely popular thing to do on the weekends. I find it relaxing, even though my husband and I spend the entire time baiting hooks and untangling wayward fishing lines. But there is something about simply throwing out a line as you sit and take in nature that is very hypnotic and makes me very happy. We even fish at the same spot I would cast a line from over 45 years ago. Vegemite on toast is still in my life after five decades. So are Milo, Frosty Fruits, and two-minute noodles. And here is a special treat for the kids this school holidays: simply make a hole in a wooden ruler and bang a pencil in it and you have the original fidget spinners before they were on the must have list. You are welcome.

DENTAL IMPLANTS A GREAT SOLUTION TO MANY ISSUES

Missing teeth? Struggling with sore or poorly fitting dentures? Concerned about your bite? You may be missing teeth from birth, from traumatic incidents, from decay and gum disease, or from wear and tear. Missing teeth may cause many problems from tipping adjacent teeth, alterations to the bite, and reduction of chewing efficiency (10 per cent for one molar; 25 per cent if you’re missing two molars). There are three possible solutions – removable dentures, bridgework (which requires reduction of adjacent teeth to

fit the crowns that can potentially result in long-term damage to the teeth) or dental implants. Dental implants presently provide the most biologically sound toothreplacement method, not relying on adjacent teeth and preserving surrounding bone. Dental implants are placed with a relatively simple surgical procedure. There is then usually a healing period. Subsequently a crown is constructed. Implants can also be used to provide a full arch of teeth where all of your teeth are missing or need removal. In many instances, implants can be placed at the same time as teeth are removed and occasionally a full arch of new teeth can be inserted within a few days (All-on-4TM) or on the same day (OsseoFrameTM). Dental implants may also be used to support full dentures (over-denture). Dr Ian Wilson is a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He first trained in dental implant surgery in 1991. Knee replacement surgery is a very common procedure. According to the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry, 66,729 procedures were performed in 2019 alone. Knee replacement surgery has evolved over the years and is now a very successful procedure. Improvements in implants, surgical techniques and various technologies to assist the surgeon have all helped to improve functional outcomes of knee replacements and patient satisfaction. We expect that these improvements will also contribute significantly to implant longevity. Many patients can expect their knee replacement to last over 20 years these days. Despite the success of knee replacement surgery, there are always risks involved. These need to be discussed carefully with your surgeon. It is also imperative that surgery be seen as a last resort. Patients should always trial a multi-disciplinary non-operative approach to manage arthritic pain prior to embarking on surgery. Varicose veins are common, they may ache and be unsightly. If left untreated they can cause bleeding, blood clots and skin ulcers. Varicose veins can be treated with injections, thermal ablation or traditional surgery. Open surgery for varicose veins usually involves a tie or stripping of the veins. The stripping operation may still provide a better outcome for patients with very large veins. Stripping removes the main superficial vein in the thigh through a small incision in the groin and the inside of the lower thigh. At the same time the varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. This technique involves a light general anaesthetic and a day or overnight stay in hospital. Bandages applied at the conclusion of the procedure are removed the next day and compression stockings are fitted. Time off normal activities is usually five to seven days. Sciatica is a debilitating and painful condition involving the sciatic nerve, which travels from the spine to your lower extremities. Disc bulges that compress the nerves, eventually forming the sciatic nerve, can be triggered and aggravated by simple things such as poor posture, sitting too long without breaks, lifting heavy objects incorrectly and even being overweight. Keeping an accurate diary of daily movements and pain levels when experiencing discomfort is critical in identifying what may be triggering your sciatic flare. If you can determine the pain is being caused by something that is easily fixed – such as altering your posture when sitting – you might be able to prevent future flare-ups by taking simple action yourself. There are several treatments available that can help alleviate sciatica symptoms, like pain medication or physical therapy, but they may not work in everyone’s specific case. If the cause of your sciatica pain cannot be found or fixed, ask your GP for a referral to see a specialist who can help resolve the issue.

Bladder cancer is an aggressive cancer with historically poor prognoses. It is estimated 3000 people were diagnosed, and over 1000 died with bladder cancer in Australia in 2020. Many of these tumours are detected early but have a high chance of recurrence – when they recur, they are often incurable. The mainstay treatment for advanced bladder cancer has been chemotherapy. While effective, response to treatment is often short-lived. Thankfully, there have been significant improvements in our understanding and treatment of these cancers. Immunotherapy is useful in preventing recurrence of disease after surgical resection. Immunotherapy given after chemotherapy also increases the time until further progression of disease and significantly improves survival in advanced disease. Targeted agents and antibody treatments have also come on the scene in the trial setting, with game-changing results. Combinations of these approaches may allow us to treat many patients who are unsuitable for chemotherapy. Early signs of bladder cancer include blood in the urine, urinary frequency and discomfort. he Coast is shining a light on women’s sport in June, with the nation’s leading rugby league, netball and water polo players converging on the same weekend (June 25-27) and a first for our region, the Women In Sport Summit. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Tourism & Events Queensland (TEQ), will host the Ministry of Sport’s third annual Women in Sport Summit at the University of the Sunshine Coast on June 25, attracting some of the most prestigious names in the industry to provide exclusive access to coveted conversations and game-changing

discussions. Sunshine Coast Stadium at Bokarina will host the 2021 Ampol Women’s State of Origin on Friday, June 25, thanks to another partnership between council and TEQ. Gates open at 5pm with an under-19 match and the main game kicking off at 7.45pm. Tickets, starting from just $5, are available from Ticketek. MOOLOOLABA YACHT CLUB ANNOUNCES 2021 MYC WOMEN’S KEELBOAT REGATTA Entries will open this month for the third Mooloolaba Yacht Club (MYC) Women’s Keelboat Regatta, to be held from July 30 to August 1. All-women crews from around Australia are invited to participate – but will need to be quick, as the number of entries is limited and the event sold out within hours last year. Despite a postponement due to COVID-19, the 2020 event attracted teams from as far away as Adelaide and Brisbane, with women ranging in age from 16 to over 60. For the first time, this year the event will see three days of racing, with at least eight crews competing in a short-course, round-robin tournament. STORM READY FOR EXTENDED SUNSHINE COAST STINT The Storm are preparing for the likelihood they will be locked out of Melbourne until the end of State of Origin in another month’s time. The NRL premiers headed to the Sunshine Coast for a two-week training camp on May 14, but have been unable to return home due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria. Their round 13 match against the Gold Coast was switched to the Sunshine Coast Stadium and their round 15 clash on Saturday June 19 with Wests Tigers has also been relocated from AAMI Park to their Sunshine Coast base. Well, hello my fine friends of the ocean. I just returned from a road trip down south. First late afternoon surf resulted in small waves, an amazing sunset and a whale 50 metres from the break, followed by a hot prawn curry around the fireplace with wine and good friends. Could it get any better? Yep, it did! New swell with offshore winds all day. This time of year is simply amazing, so make sure you take advantage for the benefit of your soul and sanity.

FISHING REPORT

The weather has been better over the last week, with good reports of fish being taken on all the inner reefs like Murphies and Sunshine. Snapper and sweetlip are the main catches. Bream have again been the main catches in all our rivers, with a few nice trevally and the jew in the Mooloolah River. The beaches have been a little more productive this week, with some nice tarwhine along the Kawana stretch along with some good-sized dart. Tailor still a little quiet, but the odd one here and there have been caught. The dams are usually quiet this time of year, but if the effort is put in, there have been some nice fish caught at Summerset using jig style lures work in the deeper water to schooling fish.
