This week our profile and feature story both reflect a theme of resilience. Although the word is trending now, some things don’t change. A little bit of research shows the word came into use in the 1620s. It was derived from the Latin word ‘resilire’, meaning to recoil or bounce back after being bent or compressed. This century, it refers to the ability to recover from some sort of adversity, rolling with the punches and/or learning from mistakes and moving on with life. Where to from here? The nation’s tourism industry is disappointed the federal budget has failed to offer substantial support for a sector that has been crushed by COVID-related lockdowns.

ustralia risks being the “lost kingdom” of the South Pacific, according to tourism bosses who are angry about a lack of support in the federal budget. The 2021/22 plan left the tourism sector with nowhere to go until at least the middle of next year, Tourism and Transport Forum chief executive Margy Osmond says. The industry wants a clear calendar for when borders would open, she says. “No timetable condemns us virtually to being the lost kingdom of the South Pacific when the rest of the world is opening up,” she says. “We will see more job losses and we will see many, many business failures.” International borders are closed and domestic travel remains in jeopardy amid COVID-19 leaks from hotel quarantine and people fearing domestic borders snapping shut.

Australian Chamber-Tourism chair John Hart says budget funding for zoos and aquariums, consumer travel and Tourism Australia would fall short without a plan to open Australia. “It is vital for the government to begin a staged opening as soon as possible, given the stimulus measures [in the budget],” he says. “Businesses need certainty and this is especially important after state border lockdowns battered the sector in 2020/21.” Tourism Minister Dan Tehan says the federal government’s $1.2 billion tourism package will help support operators and workers. Half-price airfares have given a much-needed boost to 15 domestic tourism areas across Australia, while also supporting the aviation sector, he says. The $94.6 million zoos and aquariums program will be extended by six months to maintain animal populations where

tourism revenue has been affected by travel and social distancing restrictions. “We’ll be lucky to have a tourism industry to welcome international tourists back into the country,” Ms Osmond says. After a sluggish start, the government is banking on all willing Australians being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by the end of the year. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has declined to set a target completion date for the vaccine rollout. But the 2021/22 budget assumes the program will be finished before 2022. “The vaccine is likely to be rolled out by the end of this year to all those Australians who want that vaccine,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says. “There is the assumption they will get two doses by that time.” That will require the weekly pace of the rollout to triple, with just 2.7 million doses administered so far. Mr Frydenberg says the prediction is based on “those who seek to have the vaccine” rather than the entire Australian population. Treasury also expects international travel to “remain low” through to mid-2022 after which a gradual recovery in international tourism is assumed to occur. The cautious travel approach comes as the government reveals it will spend an extra $1.9 billion over the coming year to boost its COVID-19 vaccine supply to 170 million doses and speed up the rollout. The budget papers also confirms a plan to investigate domestic manufacturing of mRNA vaccines, although an exact funding figure was not divulged due to “commercial in confidence sensitivities”. The Northern Territory’s Howard Springs facility, which is housing Australians returning from overseas, is slated to cost $487 million over two years as it expands to 2000 places. – AAP

PANEL FINDS COVID REPSONSE FAILURES

A new global system should be set up to respond faster to disease outbreaks to help ensure no future virus causes a pandemic as devastating as COVID-19, an independent World Health Organisation (WHO) review panel says. The experts found crucial shortcomings in the global response in early 2020 – including a delay in declaring an emergency, a failure to impose travel restrictions and an entire “lost month” when countries neglected to respond to warnings – that let the virus quickly spread into a crippling pandemic. To address those problems, WHO should be given the power to send investigators swiftly to chase down new disease outbreaks, and to publish their full findings without delay. “It is critical to have an empowered WHO,” says panel co-chair and former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark for the launch of the report COVID-19: Make it the Last Pandemic. Co-chair Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a former president of Liberia, says, “We are calling for a new surveillance-and-alert system that is based on transparency and allows WHO to publish information immediately.” Health ministers will debate the findings at the WHO’s annual assembly opening on May 24. –AAP

Ending the violence May is Domestic & Family Violence Awareness Month in Queensland. We spoke with local author Kristina Ruth about her new book, The Self-Preservation Guide. Words: Gail Forrer. Kristina Ruth

ust when you think it can’t get any worse. It does. Reports are sprayed throughout the media with a fiery anger, shock, horror and deep sadness, as though from a battlefield. The names of the recently killed echo across the pages. In April, we heard of the domestic violence that took the life of young mother of three Ms Kelly Wilkinson. Last year, with the horrific death of Hannah Clarke and her three children, it felt like it couldn’t get any worse – but there was more to come. Behind us we count the murder of Allison Baden-Clay and listen to the sad and impassioned words of Rosie Batty and wonder how on earth the suffering and death of little Kobi Shepherdson happened without our intervention. The domestic violence statistics in Australia are a nightmare. More reforms are promised. Awareness is growing. In the wake of an online viral petition gathering thousands of Australian students anonymously detailing accounts of rape and sexual assault and calling for sexual consent to be taught in schools, captain of Brisbane Boys College (BBC) Mason Black gave an impassioned plea to his peers to “accept this injustice against women and stand

up for what is right”. Sunshine Coast voices are among those calling for awareness and reforms. Kristina Ruth, author of The SelfPreservation Guide: how to leave a toxic relationship and change your life, has published a practical guide to identifying and removing yourself from toxic relationships before they take your life. Ms Ruth, mother of two and grandmother of one, says she was motivated to write the book after seeing people all around her and in the news affected by domestic violence. “We have an obligation to change the way we think and act about domestic violence” says the Sunshine Coast author. She is making a plea for more to be done to raise awareness of the early warning signs, to prevent domestic violence, and ultimately break the cycle. “While police do a great job of serving and protecting the community, there is only so much they can do with the current legal system,” she says. Parallel to releasing the book, Ms Ruth has sent a letter to Federal MPs calling for a Royal Commission into Domestic Violence. “With an Australian woman being murdered once a week by a current or

former partner, it is clear that we desperately need a Royal Commission into this national crisis,” she says. “The impact on families is too tragic to carry on how we are.” “We need to educate, empower and support the most vulnerable members in our community. The more people are made aware of the early red flags,

educated and empowered, the closer we are to ending the vicious cycle of domestic violence and saving Australian lives.” However, The Self-Preservation Guide is designed to offer early intervention through identifying the associated complex emotional issues. “Instinctively, as animals we know when we are in danger. It’s the flight or fight mode our bodies naturally react to, when faced with immediate danger. But what if that danger is coming from someone you love? Or someone who says they love you? Abuse is NOT love,” she says. She describes the key warning signs to look out for are as being constantly stalked, or feeling fearful of the other person and how they are going to react to you. “If your partner is behaving in an extremely jealous or controlling way, chances are you are in a toxic relationship. “The warning signs paralyse you with fear. So, you freeze and can’t speak. They stop you from being able to function and cause panic attacks and suffocate you mentally, making it difficult to breathe let alone speak, or run,” she says. myweeklypreview.com.au

1 in 5 Australian women Yet, with all this mind, her book gives hope for victims. “You can become a healthy happy and whole person,” she says. “And if you can become this person, you can have a relationship that is also healthy, happy and whole.” *SunnyKids GM Kathleen Hope has spent a decade working in the DV area. She says while the number of people using the service’s DV counselling, safehouses and refuges are on the rise (last year, 1386 people used this service), she doesn’t think actual cases are increasing. Rather, the increasing awareness around domestic violence is enabling people to recognise what is happening to them and seek help. “This book is giving people an awareness and understanding,” she says. “It’s giving people a voice.” In particular, she says increased understanding enables a person to recognise the situation they are in – to ask if they are a victim and of what. “It’s okay to feel vulnerable, to be honest with yourself and what you are going through.”

Nominations are open for the Cancer Nurse of the Year Council Queensland Nurse of the Quest started in Year Award, which began in 1971 1971 and is returning this year in line with Cancer Council Queensland’s 60th anniversary. The state government is boosting support for victims of domestic, family and sexual violence with extra funding for services across the state. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced an extra $30 million last week, to be delivered over the next four years, as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. “We have established the independent Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce to examine how best to legislate against coercive control in Queensland and to examine more broadly women’s experiences in the criminal justice system. Public submissions are now open for women to come forward and confidentially and securely share their experiences and insights and I encourage them to do so.”

SURVEYING FIRM CELEBRATES 75 YEARS Surveying firm Murray and Associates has celebrated its 75th anniversary this month. Murray and Associates was the first surveying firm on the Sunshine Coast, founded in 1946 by Fred Murray in Currie Street, Nambour. “Fred was a prominent figure on the Sunshine Coast and later awarded an OBE for his service to the Maroochy community… and he was one of the Lands Department’s top contract surveyors and president of the Society of Registered Surveyors,” the firm’s Kate Kenna says. “We now have seven offices across the state and almost 50 staff performing surveying and town planning services for private, business and government clients.” The local team celebrated the milestone on May 7.

Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat in Montville

The speed limit on a section of Maleny–Stanley River Road at Maleny has been reduced to improve safety. A three-kilometre section heading west out of the Maleny township has been reduced from 80 kilometres per hour to 70. Moreton, the iconic train at The Ginger Factory is celebrating his 120th birthday. Built in 1901 by Krauss in Germany, it was the first steam locomotive purchased by Moreton Central Sugar Mill, commissioned in July 1904 to replace horse drawn cane trucks. After working for 63 years, Moreton was decommissioned in 1967. A local couple bought and restored Moreton in the early 1990s before he arrived at the Ginger Factory in 1993 where he has been taking passengers on train rides ever since. ew Queensland government body corporate regulations will give unit owners more say in body corporate decisions, even if they aren’t committee members. The changes are focused on the modernisation of body corporate procedures and will make it easier for unit owners to voice their opinions and get a response within stipulated time frames. The law changes are focused on the capability for electronic voting and enhanced voting access. Grant Mifsud, the Sunshine Coast partner at Archers the Strata Professionals, recommends committees get up to speed with the changes, so they don’t end up in disputes incurring unnecessary cost. “The new regulations change committee and general meeting processes,” he says. “As a committee you should be prepped ahead of the changes before you are forced to be.” Owners and committee members can

easily become familiar with these changes by attending community education seminar sessions throughout the month of May, hosted by Australia’s leading online strata resource, Smart Strata. The live seminar sessions will feature leading strata lawyers presenting. The Sunshine Coast session is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at the Maroochy RSL. Gallery’s latest exhibition Coastal Connections: beach culture past to present explores how beach culture is embedded in our nation’s identity, shaping our lifestyle, fashion and art.

The exhibition is on show until June 20 and includes artworks drawn from many private and public collections, including the Sunshine Coast Council’s Art and Heritage collection. Community portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says this exhibition of art, heritage objects and film was a fabulously encouraging way to celebrate and absorb yourself into aspects of our Sunshine Coast’s outstanding beachside culture. “Our ocean is such a dynamic space both in terms of what’s in and around it, so it’s doubly important to tell and preserve significant stories, so that future generations get some insight into what we thought and understood at the time,” Cr Baberowski says. “The telling of those stories also makes us think about our own experiences and memories and reminds us to be the best guardians we possibly can of our exceptional environment and lifestyle.” Caloundra Regional Gallery manager and curator Jo Duke says the exhibition contemplated our love for the surf, sea and shore. “The artworks on show celebrate our enduring connection with the coast, including works by Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi/Wakka Wakka Elder Aunty Hope O’Chin, capturing cultural heritage

NEWS is a solid redwood surfboard, crafted during Duke Kahanamoku’s visit to Australia in 1915. Known as “the father of modern surfing”, Duke’s Sydney exhibition of wave riding with a surfboard modelled on traditional Hawaiian design was a defining moment for our nation’s emerging surfing culture. “Excitingly, the exhibition also includes a new short film Allure of the Beach, funded by the Cultural Heritage Levy, which captures touching recollections from key Sunshine Coast identities to record, preserve and share their memories.” Hayden Kenny, Australia’s first Ironman champion and Alexandra Headland SLSC life member is featured in the film and says his first time at the beach was a classic day. “There was a light offshore breeze, the water was clear and I was invited to have a swim in the club’s surf race –you couldn’t get a better introduction to sell the place,” Mr Kenny says. Serena Brooke, former Association of Surfing Professionals and World Surf League professional surfer is also featured in the film. Serena hails from the Sunshine Coast and says being one of six kids, it was a big thing to go to the beach back then. “I specifically remember being on a

hot shot boogie board and looking out at surfers and I didn’t even know what it was at that point. I was just like ‘oh my god, I want to go out there’,” Ms Brooke says. “I’ll always remember that first time I saw surfing and I saw surfers and that feeling of just being at the beach—I loved it. It’s amazing.”

NEW DRUG GIVES HOPE Cannabis-based treatment offers a glimmer of hope for Tom, who has a severe form of epilepsy. WORDS: Kat Donaghey.

s a former Australian and world ironwoman champion and trailblazing female athlete, Kerri Thomas knows all about endurance. But as a mum, she has witnessed another level of grit and fortitude in her son Tom, 12, who has one of the most severe forms of epilepsy. From eight months old, Tom has suffered frightening epileptic seizures that have become worse as he grows older. Though each day is different, he often experiences six to eight seizures that can last from two to three minutes, sometimes back to back, and especially at night. It’s not known why, but some days are worse than others when he might have as many as 10 attacks which can leave him exhausted and barely able to speak. Ms Thomas, who was the Aussie ironwoman champion in 1998/99, has shared her son’s story to shed light on his

devastating disease, Dravet Syndrome, which has no cure, nor any medication to stop the seizures. “The impact of Dravet Syndrome is not just physical, it is also mental because experiencing consistent seizures is traumatising and exhausting, for Tom and also for us while we are caring for him,” Ms Thomas says. “It has been devastating and quite isolating for our family.” There is a glimmer of hope, however, with the first cannabis-based medicine added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) this month to help slow the onset of seizures. Tom has started taking a medicinal cannabis-based treatment twice a day and Ms Thomas says it appears to have the least side-effects of the many medicines he’s tried, which have impacted his alertness and other functions. “Every person with the condition is

different and different medications will work for them,” says Ms Thomas. “Giving more families choice for dealing with this condition, is giving them more hope.” Tom was diagnosed at five with the drug-resistant form of epilepsy but he had been suffering seizures since he was a baby. “When he was eight months old he had a fever and cold and his temperature spiked so we took him to hospital and when we got there he had his first seizure and five minutes later another one,” says Ms Thomas. “That was our first experience. It was very frightening.” The seizures became more frequent and intense over time and a genetic test eventually revealed a problem on a gene (not inherited) which caused the disease. Tom’s unpredictable seizures can vary from episodes where he stops and stares for three to four minutes to others where he will stop, sit and then suffer a seizure. At other times they are more dramatic when Tom might drop and fall on the floor with his eyes rolling and legs and arms shaking. Ms Thomas says it is not possible to stop or prevent the seizures so as parents they ensure he is safe and comfortable. Tom often emerges feeling exhausted and as the years have passed the attacks also appear to be “chipping away at him” and causing damage that has affected his cognition and motor skills. But she says her boy is resilient and shows good spirit for someone with such a tragic condition that has no end in sight. His seizures are happening mostly at night these days, between 1am and 6am, which means Tom can attend school if he’s not too tired from a rough night. “He’s quite resilient for someone living with such a condition. When he could easily curl up, he’s having a go and likes to get out and do things.” From sunshinecoastnews.com.au.

hen Jayne Brown was diagnosed with two brain tumours and told they were inoperable, she was devastated. One tumour stretched across both hemispheres of her brain and the other was pushing her right eye out of its socket. Doctors said if they operated, she would lose her ability to walk and her speech, but Ms Brown was determined. The 60-year-old Mooloolah Valley mother and grandmother had too much to live for. She contacted Professor Charlie Teo, the neurosurgeon famed for treating patients other surgeons won’t touch, and on August 10 last year, in the midst of COVID lockdowns, she had the surgery that has given her a new lease on life and a desire to give back to the Charlie Teo Foundation. “My eye was actually popping out,” she says. “I was a walking time bomb. I sent Charlie all my scans, he gave me a Zoom appointment and said ‘I need you here as

You don’t know how you’re going to be when you come out; there are a lot of risks. I was one of the lucky ones – my eyesight is not compromised and my eye has gone about 80 per cent back. Incredibly, Ms Brown was forced to spend two weeks in hotel quarantine after the operation, her only pain relief being paracetamol and a heat pack. There was no microwave in the room to warm up the heat pack and requests to the hotel were denied. “It was so painful and my partner was trying to heat up my heat pack with a hotel hairdryer, which didn’t work,” she says.

The next Monday, he had removed both of her tumours in their entirety. “They’d grown so big they had embedded into my skull, so he couldn’t put my skull back and I have metal plates there. I’m really well, I just have to have yearly MRIs to make sure nothing is growing back and I have a nine per cent chance of something growing back because I had multiple tumours.” “I have three beautiful daughters and seven grandchildren and I’m 60 – I have too

The Queensland government knocked back Ms Brown’s application to recover back at home on her acreage in the Mooloolah Valley, despite pleas from Prof Teo. “I asked for an exemption but was told I wasn’t an ‘exceptional circumstance’. The media got involved and on day 10 of quarantine we had a knock at the door. Two policemen put us in a taxi to a suite in another hotel with a full kitchen.” Rather than lying around feeling sorry for herself, Ms Brown, a businesswoman who has had shoe, handbag and wine accessories businesses, planned a new business. In bed with pen and paper, she devised a new lip gloss range called Noosa Glow Australia and vowed to donate part of the profits to the Charlie Teo Foundation. “I wanted to make a little bit of a difference and give back as well,” she says. “I’m so thankful for Charlie Teo.” Launched in November – just three months after her brain surgery – Ms Brown wanted to make a vegan, certified organic lip gloss with beautiful packaging. Ms Brown hopes to expand her range to include a body scrub and a bronzer. “Every business I have started has always been unique and very glam,” she says. “Noosa Glow is no different. The glosses come in stunning containers and I have also designed metallic mesh drawstring lined little pouches to fit a lip gloss perfectly. My motto is: lots of lip gloss and your sunnies and you can go anywhere.”

Family-owned business Concept Labs is thriving thanks to the opportunities it receives as part of its involvement with industry networks. General manager Naomi Elliott’s parents started the business in 1998 and she joined the company full time nine years ago. “We are part of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network and they’ve got great inspirations, friendships, insights and regular events they hold where we can listen to fellow business owners in our region and their stories about success and what’s been difficult,” Ms Elliott says. “One of the biggest impacts to our business as a result of being part of the business network was being nominated for the Sunshine Coast Business Awards in 2019 and taking home the prize for Manufacturing (Large) and Export. That really boosted our business profile and has opened up more doors for us to be able to expand and take on new clients and deliver more back to our region.”

In 2020, HR Dynamics’ director Rebecca Wright saw the opportunity to expand her already-established Cairns business and relocate to the Sunshine Coast. After 13 years in Cairns, starting fresh left Ms Wright looking for connections and direction to launch into the local business community. “We didn’t have the business connections and the support from the business community so one of our first points of call was to go to the chambers and that has been fantastic in a whole range of ways,” she says. “They’ve provided us with information about the business landscapes and we’ve been part of the Chamber Alliance mentoring program. There have been some absolute superstars in the chambers who have made introductions for us and we’ve been made to feel really welcome and attended events and morning teas. “It’s really given us the confidence that this is the right thing to do and has welcomed us into the business community.”

Fenn Foods was founded in 2015 by Argentina’s Alejandro Cancino and Paola Moro and has grown from strength to strength thanks to support from industry networks. The local company produces a range of plant-based meat products, including the popular retail brand vEEF, which its stocked in Woolworths nationwide and is a member of FAN (Food and Agricultural Network). “There is so much that you have to learn very quickly in terms of how to get your products on the shelf, what sort of certifications and qualifications you need, what the processes are and how to access funding,” Ms Moro says. “How to run a business is not something you are taught at school, so it’s really key to have shared resources you can access from groups like FAN. “On top of that you get access to a network of people who are potential customers and networking in the sense of building relationships with the local community.”

After opening The Good Place during the middle of last year’s lockdowns, founder James McGovern turned to several chambers to help his business. Now he is an executive of the Kawana Chamber and a member of the Maroochydore, 4556, Mooloolaba, Caloundra and Sunshine Coast Young chambers, Sunshine Coast Young Professionals and FAN (Food and Agricultural Network). “Hospitality is all about human connection, so I really enjoy the face-to-face, offline initiative that a chamber gives you,” he says. “We only moved up last year just before the COVID shutdown and we didn’t know anyone, so it really was the best way to meet as many people on the Coast and connect with many like-minded people. Through that we found most of our producers and suppliers and we connected with our events company and our branding and marketing crew. We are involved as much as possible and try to give back as much as possible, hosting events and giving vouchers in raffles as well as our time.”

Sunshine Coast animal shelter in need of “dire” repairs is hoping an annual fundraiser will give comfort to animals in care. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) is holding it Paws for a Cause fundraiser on May 29, something president Penny Brischke says will contribute to funding building repairs. “We have been running since 1979, so most of our facilities are 42 years old and as you can imagine that makes for a lot of wear and tear on buildings,” Ms Brischke says. “Two of our dog buildings are desperately in need of some refurbishments – it’s a couple of years overdue.” The current buildings are made of besser block with wire fences overlooking the rest of the shelter. “We’ve got very base-grade accommodation for them at the moment. “It’s not overly good for dogs that have behavioural issues or anxiety because it is a highly stimulated environment out there.” The refurbishment project is estimated to cost about $200,000 for 20 new dog enclosures. “What we’ve had drawn up to build is something that will provide much better spaces for the dogs to actually be waiting in while they’re waiting to be adopted. “They’re lower-stimulus pens, they block out noise, they’re cooler, they’re more like a room rather than a pen and that’s really important to us to rehabilitate them while they are there.”

The fundraising event, on May 29, will include a three-course lunch at Buderim. “We are allowed to bring along some of our fury friends, which is really special and something a bit different for people” Ms Brischke says. “The crowd get to connect with the cause, which is a fabulous thing. “The last one we did in 2019, we even had a few people interested in the animals and most of the animals that came along actually found homes afterwards.” Ms Brischke hopes businesses and individuals will help SCARS reach its goal through a sponsorship initiative. “We will be introducing a program where local business can get on board. We are looking at something like ‘The Shelter the Community Built’. “We will be inviting businesses or individuals to sponsor a pen.” Businesses are also welcome to donate prizes for silent and live auctions at the Paws for a Cause fundraiser. Ms Brischke says the shelter is seeing an influx of animals as a direct result of the rental crisis. “At the moment we have about 50 animals on site – cats and dogs – but we also have a foster program we run and there would probably be about 30 to 40 [animals] out there.” Businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities can email marketing@ sippycreek.com.au. Residents put up with speeding, burnouts that leave a trail of smoke up the street, tyre doughnuts and the noise from revving and modified exhaust systems on an almost daily basis. Footage obtained from a home security system on Christmas Eve last year showed a hooning incident in Bryce Street, at a time when festive revellers were out and about.

offat Beach residents fear a fatality at their doorstep as hooning and everincreasing traffic threaten to destroy the ambience of their popular beachside community. Long-time local John Stark is part of an action group of concerned residents who have approached Sunshine Coast division two Councillor Terry Landsberg

and Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt for urgent action to improve pedestrian safety and deter hoon behaviour. The Make Moffat Shine group – which also includes residents Matt Wilson, Kevin Hasemann and Dale Young – has organised petitions to the council and state government to support short- and long-term changes and improvements. Mr Stark knows only too well how

They were following each other and sliding around the blind corner,” Mr Stark says. “There were still people walking around from the park and walking to the park at that time of night – 7.30. And they could easily have been killed.” Mr Stark says the noise associated with the hooning, which can occur day or night, is unbearable. “It’s generally in the late afternoons, and also early-morning hoons heading off to work. Late at night is a problem when they’ve been drinking in the park and they take off from the park, loaded with alcohol.

“It’s worse on weekends and holiday periods. “The state regulations on noise pollution are very vague. They’re not enforced and the other thing is that they are set at an industrial level as if they were in a factory. “They are not set in empathy to residential areas and I think this is a fundamental problem: 90 decibels is quite loud. Very loud as a threshold. “If you look at the average car without muffler modification, you are looking around about 45 to 60 decibels for cars doing slow mileage in residential areas.” Mr Stark says the traffic problems affect the foreshore area, with its high pedestrian traffic, plus outer access roads including Roderick and Edmund streets. The Make Moffat Shine group believes improving pedestrian safety – through initiatives such as reducing speed limits, increasing signage in shared zones and installing more safe crossings – and a stronger police presence will go a long way to stopping the hoons. Mr Stark says the group is pleased with the support Mr Landsberg and Mr Hunt have given so far, and he hopes the petitions will add community weight. CONGRATULATIONS MAY AND GEORGE THOMAS Little Mountain couple reflect on 60 years of marriage. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

ay and George Thomas’ love for each other is shining bright like a diamond as they celebrate a major wedding anniversary on May 20. The Little Mountain couple is marking 60 years of marriage filled with many wonderful memories. Both born in Atherton in far north

Queensland, Mr and Mrs Thomas met at their local Methodist youth group in January 1958, something they both say was “love at first sight”. “Our date was going to the Roxy Picture Theatre, a lot of walking – no car back then,” Mrs Thomas says. Shortly after meeting, Mr Thomas, who had joined the National Australia

Bank, was transferred to Townville for work. “The rest of our courtship was done by letter writing and on holidays, which were eagerly awaited,” Mrs Thomas says. Eventually the pair was engaged on February 4, 1960 before their wedding on May 20, 1961 in Atherton where 146 guests were present at their reception. “Our first matrimonial home was in Townsville where our eldest son Stephen was born in May 1963,” Mr Thomas says. “My next bank transfer was to Home Hill and our second son Greg was born in February 1965. In total we had 11 transfers in the bank since marriage and lived in 14 homes.” Wherever they were transferred Mrs Thomas found work and both involved themselves in the community, church and service clubs. “George’s first managerial appointment was to New Farm in June 1975,” she says. “I opened the first Lifeline clothing shop in Caloundra in the early 1980s in a store where Centrepoint now stands.” After more than 38 years of bank service, Mr Thomas retired and the couple moved to Caloundra in October 1995. They have both been presidents of the

now-retired Probus Club of Caloundra Central, and Mrs Thomas has been president of the Caloundra Uniting Church Adult Fellowship for 19 years. She is also the current president of Caloundra Evening VIEW Club, while Mr Thomas enjoys playing golf weekly. Mr and Mrs Thomas, who also have two grandchildren – Ashleigh and Caitlin – will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on May 22 with family and friends at Caloundra Power Boat Club. As for the couple’s secret to a long and happy marriage, they both attribute it to love, trust and respect, together with a strong Christian faith.

SMARTPHONES ARE NOT THE ENEMY It might not have a cord, but we are most certainly attached. And what is not to love about a smart phone? My phone is like a kind of limb – the bionic woman kind, I like to imagine. But really it is more like a digital growth. I am a bit lopsided without it and I feel best when it is attached. It is physically a bit helpless – I have learnt the hard way that it cannot swim and is not very resilient when it falls down – but, where knowledge is concerned, it is the bomb diggity. We just have to remember who’s boss. As this publication reported, the Growing Up Digital Australia study had some alarming findings: almost all parents think digital media and technologies are distracting for themselves and that their kids’ heads are likewise turned. Screeds have been written about smart phone addiction. There is no doubt some people have real problems, but for most of us phone use is a choice because of the gifts the little treasures hold within. Even though conversation nearly always frames them negatively, smart phones are not all bad if we use them deliberately. We have so much at our

fingertips. We get lost less and can check facts more. Our phones even know where we have been and anticipate where we are going and it is all in the cloud – like some kind of omnipotent being. I am not sure I can go too long without one. And that is a choice. Going off grid and spurning the cell for a spell is a thing. Not on Insta anymore. Not digitally connected. Getting back in touch with the earth: it can come across as a bit pious (and strangely cool) with a retro vibe. And these detoxes rarely last long. Phones have become so much to us. For starters, we now can’t go anywhere without them, given they are the device through which we have to check in in case the worst happens and there is a COVID outbreak. They track us, and thanks to COVID, being tracked is now a good thing. My phone is my alarm clock, starting me off positively each morning with U2’s Beautiful Day. It counts my steps, tracks my fitness levels and tells me what I have on my agenda. It even encourages me to power down at the day’s end. Phones are now dictionaries, multilingual translators and encyclopedias. We buy things with them, collect points on them and use them to get from A to B. They link us to precious people, important news and have replaced the community noticeboards as well as address and phone books. We can watch storm fronts approaching miles away and check real-time conditions on our favourite surf breaks when we are at work. We take photos and videos with them, and keep our treasured ones in virtual albums. To my mind, where smart phones are concerned, the future beckoned and we were right to take the call.

There are NOT enough places on the Coast where you are able to take your pet. It is still very restrictive. I realise we are not in Europe, where you are allowed to take your friend everywhere. The kinds of people that want to take their pets with them are likely to be responsible, ensuring they are up-to-date with vaccines, choosing not to leave their pet at home or, worse, in the car! Sure there are a few that let the side down. But give us, the responsible ones, a break. And if you are worried about germs animals may bring don’t go to those few places that are now allowing dogs. I applaud those who have taken trouble to make their business open to everyone!

I am writing to comment on a column in issue 653 of MWP. The article by Jane Stephens, ‘In defence of vegetarians’, states that “the consumption of too much animal protein and fats have strong links to the development of cancer and heart disease” is not supported by good-quality scientific evidence. Review of the history and literature surrounding this viewpoint shows that it has been propagated by a number of vested interests. If anything, the scientific evidence shows the reverse to be true. In addition, palaeontological, historical, and scientific evidence shows that over the 3.5 million years of human evolution, our physiology and dietary intake developed to be highly meat and animal fat based. There is also historical, and more recent clinical trial, evidence to show that a vegetarian diet is associated with increased cardiovascular disease. A vegetarian diet has a significant chance of being deficient in important nutrients, so may require supplements. So why not eat a balance of real food at intervals that our physiology is designed for?

hat have I learned from COVID? Wash my hands more, don’t touch my face as much. I can now take my temperature accurately and the economy is far more resilient than I thought it was. Cars, boats, motorbikes, bicycles, gym gear, TVs, clothes stores, surf shops all appear to have only one problem: not enough stock. Sure, I would like to own a toilet paper business with what I now know, but I didn’t see that coming. Real estate in regional areas is another thing I didn’t see coming and most long-time locals on the Coast could make a killing, but the problem is where do you move to? I have also learnt that politicians, health officials and our community leaders have made decisions to try and keep us healthy for the right reasons, which is all I can ask for. Sure they aren’t all 100 per cent correct, but at least they are trying. I don’t agree with some of them, but have complied. Take masks, for instance. I don’t see how they help much. We touch the mask, we take it down to eat or drink, we put it back we touch our glass or plate with the same hands that touched the mask, air

comes out of the side of the mask. How does any of this actually help? But that’s what we were asked to do, so I did it. Actually, I am a far better looking man with a mask on, so I didn’t mind wearing it, but I could have got an exemption if I wanted. My exemption would possibly be for claustrophobia. If that was a fail, then I could have tossed up vestibular issues, but I went with the masses and wore the mask because that was what I was asked to do by our officials. Now ,some folk didn’t go with that, and just flatly said they had an exemption but didn’t have to prove that they had one as it was an invasion of privacy. If I was operating a business, I would need to protect staff and patrons from this awful virus and would think I would have every right to ask someone why they aren’t wearing a mask? There is contradicting information on what is right and what is wrong, but surely human decency would rise to the top after what has been a very trying period for everyone and it wouldn’t be too much to ask for someone to carry a card that said, ‘John Smith Medically Exempt’.

o you miss some couples being together? I miss Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston walking the red carpet with their golden blonde hair and perfect genetics. I would love to see Demi Moore and Bruce Willis be reunited and have some more kids with peculiar names. And before Johnny Depp went a bit strange, I could not get enough of him and Winona being bound by love and matching black leather jackets. What I would do to see one more pash between Han Solo and Princess Leia. Those were the good old days, when we all had more time ahead of us than behind us. So, imagine my glee at that image of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck in HER private plane as they jetted off to some exotic location in Montana. Bennifer is back, baby! I am still gasping for air after reading that 17 years after ending their engagement (yes, it was 2004) the Hollywood stars are having happy hour together again. I was concerned to read they were going to a Montana farm, as I thought well, that is going to be hard for Ben to not hit the roulette wheel at 2am

and Jenny From The Block is more a city gal than a flanno shirt and cowboy boots kind of lady. The press turned to Matt Damon for a comment about his buddy being back with J-Lo. The Jason Bourne actor is holidaying in Australia and I was equal parts horrified and delighted to see him be interviewed in a TAB with the dogs on all the screens around his gorgeous face. Matt seems he has truly embraced the Aussie lifestyle while he is in the country filming Thor with Hotty Hemsworth. Back to Bennifer. Let us hope it works out for them the second time around, because even I am getting bored of watching Harry and Meghan interviews. And in more exciting news, a Friends reunion is about to be released that is called The One Where They All Get Back Together. Many of us fell in love with the whole gang way back in 1994. How can it be so long ago? I cannot wait to see Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Ross and Joey back together in the Central Perk cafe. The only thing that could make this year even better is a Sex And The City reunion.

There is no denying that hearing aids help make life better. One of the common complaints is changing batteries regularly. Shoulder pain Shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons for a patient to see an orthopaedic surgeon. Sometimes there is a clear injury such as a shoulder dislocation. Pain may develop after lifting something too often or too heavy. More often there may be no incident at all that leads to shoulder pain. Pain can be felt anywhere from the neck to the elbow. Minor shoulder problems may be due to inflammation in the bursa causing pain with movement, or perhaps inflammation in the joint causing a frozen shoulder. These conditions often do well with conservative treatments such as steroid injections and physiotherapy. More serious conditions such as rotator cuff tears and tearing of the shoulder lining (labrum) may require surgery to repair. These types of shoulder problems often result in more than just pain but loss of shoulder movement and loss of strength and function. Specialist shoulder surgeons often take further fellowship training internationally and are able to repair rotator cuffs and labrums through minimally invasive keyhole techniques.

How to treat varicose veins Varicose veins are common. They can be unsightly and may ache. Sometimes they cause bleeding, blood clots or skin ulcers. Smaller varicose veins can be treated with a process called sclerotherapy. Larger varicose veins require ablation or surgery. Thermal ablation is a keyhole technique that heats the main superficial vein using radio frequency energy. At the same time the varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. The technique is undertaken as a day procedure in hospital under a light general anaesthetic. Bandages, which are applied at the conclusion of the procedure, are removed the next day and compression stockings are fitted. Time off normal activities is usually three days. Walking is important after treatment, and the stocking is worn for 10 days. Discomfort is minimal. The procedure has been used by many thousands of people Australia-wide as a way to treat unsightly, problematic varicose veins. Nerve pain Compressed nerves in the spine can often cause the feeling of an ‘electric shock’ in the arm or leg. My patients also use words like ‘burning’, ‘pins and needles’, ‘numb, and ‘dead’ to describe nerve pain. Usually the symptoms settle with time and often a trip to your GP, physio and perhaps some simple painkillers are often all that are required. Lifestyle changes such as optimising your weight, being active and giving up smoking can reduce the chances of having back and neck problems later in life. If these symptoms persist for more than six weeks, it could be a sign that things aren’t going to resolve on their own and a CT or MRI scan may pinpoint the problem. egional Queensland has been the biggest winner in the flow of people moving from south of the border to the warmer, more affordable communities. The Finishing Touch, a national company that helps people through the process of packing up to arriving at a new home, reaffirms that finding. The last year has been its busiest to date, says chief executive officer Susan Williams.

“We are seeing activity levels not seen for many, many years,” Ms Williams says. “Our business of helping people move into the Coast area is up by 55 per cent in the past 12 months alone, continuing a strong growth trend of recent years.” For every four clients they move, only one is booked to head out of the Coast. Their Coast clients are predominantly from Melbourne and Sydney with most moving into houses and acreage.

“We have baby boomers retiring or pulling forward plans to semi-retire and do remote working, families who have decided to move now after being unable to move due to COVID restrictions, high net worth clients who are rationalising their various properties and deciding to spend more time in the area and expats returning from overseas,” Ms Williams says. “Many of them are familiar with the Coast, having holidayed there often. Their expectations include access to a wide range of professional and trades services, which they have typically enjoyed in their prior, perhaps larger cities and suburbs. “This can bring the occasional challenge when inner city ‘on demand’ clients from say, larger capital cities meet a more relaxed Queenslander approach to provision of services or an inability to instantly respond due to peak demand, which doesn’t seem to be abating on the Sunshine Coast. “For families, we see regularly that quality schools and modern sporting facilities are very high on their priority lists for choosing particular homes.” These southerners are moving into a range of suburbs including Peregian
