FORD TAKES CHARGE WITH BATTERY CENTRE American car-maker Ford positions itself as a market leader with plans to develop and produce batteries for electric vehicles.
S
aying that it wants to control the key technology for electric vehicles, Ford plans to open a battery development centre near Detroit by the end of next year. The company says the facility will have equipment to design, test and even do small-scale manufacturing of battery cells and packs. The $185 million lab will also develop electronic controls and other items as Ford moves more of the process in-house. Eventually the company wants to do large-scale manufacturing of its own batteries globally, a task now performed by supply companies. Like many global automakers who have been stung by supply chain shortages, Ford wants to make sure it has enough batteries
for what it says is an accelerating transition away from internal combustion engines. Hau Thai-Tang, the company’s chief product and operations officer, says electric vehicles are moving from early adopters to an early majority as new models come out, and Ford wants to lead the transition. The move comes as the global auto industry races to control supplies including precious metals needed to make batteries and individual cells that form big battery packs to run as many as 300 new electric models coming out in the next two years. Under new CEO Jim Farley, the plan is a reversal from Ford’s previous path of buying technology and batteries from supply companies. Now it is looking forward to manufacturing their own. Ford says it has
discussed the transition to battery power with the Biden administration, which has pegged much of its climate change policy on more electric vehicles on the roads. The announcement comes after Ford got caught up in a trade secrets fight between its main battery supplier SK Innovation and LG Energy Solution. The US International Trade Commission decided in February that SK stole 22 trade secrets from LG Energy, and that SK should be barred from importing, making or selling batteries in the US for 10 years. The decision gave SK four years to make batteries for Ford, and it could have left the company scrambling for supplies. SK has the contract to make batteries for an electric version of Ford’s F-150 pickup, the US’s top-selling vehicle. The dispute was settled earlier this month with SK agreeing to pay $1.8 billion and an undisclosed royalty. Automakers have been moving towards building their own batteries, and they’ve been securing their own supplies of raw materials such as lithium, copper, nickel and other precious metals directly from producers. Guidehouse Insights principal analyst Sam Abuelsamid says the global semiconductor shortage and the SK Innovation trade dispute likely made Ford pull ahead its plans much faster. Many automakers are pulling battery development and manufacturing in-house, or into joint ventures formed with parts supply companies, he says. “Engines and transmissions have been considered a core competency of automakers since 1886, but as those go away, they are seeing the need to make batteries. “No one wants to get locked out of supplies, and as volumes scale, the cost of paying a markup to suppliers is going to grow.” – AAP
FRANCE, GERMANY PLAN BILLIONS IN PANDEMIC RECOVERY SPENDING France and Germany have laid out plans for billions in spending from the European Union’s pandemic recovery fund aimed at fighting climate change and boosting the use of digital technology across the economy. The finance ministers of the EU’s two biggest economies recently underlined their joint determination to use the spending to transform Europe’s economy and get the continent growing again as it lags behind the US and China in rebounding from the pandemic recession. Under the fund’s formula, France should get around 40 billion euros ($62 billion) while German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz says his country has planned about 28 billion euros ($43 billion) in spending. Mr Scholz says that half the money will go to environmentally friendly projects and a quarter to spreading the use of digital technology. He says the fund will build on domestic relief and stimulus measures already passed by the German government. He called the fund “a ground-breaking step for Europe”. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has urged the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, to quickly evaluate the plans so that money can start flowing to members states from the 750 billion euro ($1170 billion) fund as early as July, noting that the US and China have recovered faster. He says that since the fund was approved “we have lost too much time”. Last year, France’s economy shrank by 8.3 per cent during the virus crisis, the worst slump since World War II, according to national statistics institute INSEE. –AAP

Happy Mother’s Day
C
hampagne, breakfast in bed, walks on the beach, lots of cuddles and NO housework. These are the common themes we encountered when we spoke with six high-profile Sunshine Coast mums to see what their ideal Mother’s Day looks like. Contrary to speculation in the My Weekly Preview office, none of them said their ideal Mother’s Day involved escaping with the girls on a child-free weekend away and binging on Sex and the City. US woman Anna Jarvis is credited as
having founded Mother’s Day in the early 20th century. She chose white carnations as the official flower, because they were her mother’s favourite. Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in Australia widely during the 1920s, however, as carnations are a spring flower, we have instead adopted white chrysanthemums as the traditional Mother’s Day flower. As mothers everywhere are celebrated on the second Sunday of May, we would also like to acknowledge all those mothers who have lost children and for whom it is a difficult day.

What is your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day? I will be served breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day, which is my favourite meal of the entire year as my little people will be banging and bashing saucepans and trying to be quiet downstairs, while I listen to the commotion caused by the cute cooks and my wonderful husband. Usually I feast upon chocolate (yes, for brekkie), burnt toast, raw eggs, carrot sticks and whatever else they know Mummy likes to eat. For the record I do not like raw eggs, but my kids do know I like scrambled eggs. They will serve ladybug juice (rose wine) and I will tell them not to tell their teachers! Then my tribe will all climb into bed and push the dogs and pillows and toys out of the way trying to secure some valuable bed space. It is sought-after real estate.
I realise these are the golden years when my children have no choice but to celebrate with me. I will be sad when they leave my nest one day because being a mum is the role in life I am most proud of and most cherish. My husband and I underwent IVF for many years so to have three children is a bit of a modern miracle and I know I am besotted with them.
What’s something special your child or children have said to you that you’ll never forget? As for their classic sayings well spaghetti is basghetti, butterflies are flutterbyes and Your China is where babies come from when they are born. My youngest one told our friend he may have to be a polar bear at my father’s funeral. When I quizzed him about what he meant I realised he was confused with pall bearer. Happy Mother’s Day to the wise and wonderful women who do so much for our families.
What is your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day? Spending the day with my beautiful family – hitting the beach in the morning, delicious outdoor picnic for lunch and a few champagnes watching the sunset to celebrate all the amazing mums.

me is to be with my family. Having my mum with me would be awesome but she lives five hours away from me, so we find other days to be together. I love it when my kids spoil me and take care of me, as Mother’s Day is a special day for me. I love going through photo albums together and re-living all our adventures as a family, going to the beach and enjoying the sun and the sea air. Just having time with my husband, children and grandchildren makes my day!
family has many funny moments! When I was pregnant with Brandon, 16, both my stepdaughters, Melissa and Jasmine, were pregnant at the same time. I delivered Brandon in March and in July I was the birthing partner for Jasmine. While helping her through her contractions I was still breastfeeding – multitasking starts early in motherhood! I’d explain, “I’m carrying Melissa’s brother and she is carrying my grandbaby.” We have a crazy, loving, amazing family that is filled with so much love and fun. I am so proud of them. Being a wife, mum and a granny is the highlight of my life. Once I was asked how many children I had while I was pregnant with Brandon and I would reply
What is your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day? Typically, I’ll get cuddles in bed, a cup of tea and cards or gifts in the morning, which is a lovely start to the day. The aim is to avoid any cooking or cleaning throughout the day, but it’s not always achieved as I shift roles and move from being the pampered mum, to the daughter who pampers her own mother. I like spending the day with the kids doing simple low-key things like playing games, having a picnic in the park, or if it’s raining, snuggling on the couch watching movies, and it’s always great to have a sunset walk along the beach. My sister and I will also tease each other throughout the day arguing over who is Mum’s favourite daughter.

Names and ages of your children? What is your ideal way to spend Mother’s Day? – My ideal Mother’s Day begins with a trek up Mount Coolum or a walk around Point Cartwright to
Buddina or a walk from Mooloolaba to Cotton Tree, followed by a coffee. Some years the kids even join us! Then, lunch at a cafe – I’m really easy with this. My only proviso is that there is no fighting. Some years it even happens! Usually, there is also some baking on offer – friands are a favourite. My mum has
things to me that are absolutely shocking, but sadly, are not suitable for print! They have each stabbed me in the heart, turned me into a screaming, ranting shrew, and led me to question all of my parenting values. Yet, they have given me such love and moments of pure joy that I feel my heart will burst – sometimes in the same day. I know for certain that they have given me a gift. When they are kind to each other, it makes my eyes prick with the start of tears. When they are kind to others, it’s even better. I swell with pride and share their wins. I turn into a fierce lion when they need one on hand. I guess you’d say, I’m a regular mum.

FUNDING FOR CYBER SUPPORT SERVICE Sunshine Coast-based not-for-profit IDCARE will provide specialist services to 54,000 Australian victims of cybercrime over the next four years using $6.1 million in federal government funding. The funding was announced last month by the Minister for Defence Peter Dutton and Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace during a visit to IDCARE’s Caloundra headquarters. Since its establishment by the federal government in 2014, IDCARE has directly supported more than 200,000 Australians, helping reverse the impacts of cyber-crimes including identity theft and the hacking of personal devices. “I’m sure we’ve all experienced those fake calls from the ‘Australian Tax Office’, or the ads for products that are too good to be true, but every year these scams are getting more sophisticated,” Mr Wallace says. IDCARE managing director David Lacey says this is a “very practical contribution that will make a big difference to the lives of many Australians impacted by these crimes”.

GET SET FOR ONLINE ADVENTURE To help the community stand strong and improve overall health and wellbeing, registrations are now open for the final round of The Lift Project Sunshine Coast, starting May 31. The Sunshine Coast Council’s free program is a holistic, evidence-based, online adventure that draws together the latest research from neuroscience, lifestyle medicine and positive psychology. “There is such a need for universal mental health interventions and to make these types of evidence-based treatments available to whole communities,” The Lift Project’s Dr Darren Morton says. “More than 4000 people have registered for the first three sessions, which has been a record for us.” Participants will receive weekly emails with topics including learning about the “emotional brain” and why activity and being outdoors is crucial. Registrations close May 27 at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/liftproject.
Motorists can look forward to a smoother and safer drive in and around the Bruce Highway’s Johnston Road interchange at Glass House Mountains. The state government will start work on its fifth resurfacing project on the Sunshine Coast in the past eight months. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the latest $1 million project will see 1.5 kilometres of road resurfaced, including the southbound and northbound on and off-ramps. “This resurfacing work will take place northbound at the Johnston Road interchange to both southbound and northbound on and off-ramps.” The complex upgrades will take three weeks to complete, weather permitting, from 8pm to 5am.
WHALES RETURN TO SUNSHINE COAST WATERS It’s time for Sunshine Coast residents and visitors to keep their eyes peeled as humpback whales make their annual migration along the east coast. More than 25,000 whales are expected to swim past Queensland from now until November, travelling from and returning to the Southern Ocean. Boaties are being urged to be wary of whales migrating. Humpbacks swim along the coast day and night and can surface without warning and are known to leap out of the water, nudge boats and to slap their tails when close to vessels.

The University of the Sunshine Coast has been recognised in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings of universities. USC placed 26th of the 1115 universities considered by THE for its Impact Rankings – the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With a score of 92.1 out of 100, USC is the highest-placed Queensland university. USC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett says the ranking is an outstanding result recognising USC’s effort to make sustainability an integral part of its teaching, research and community engagement.

WILDLIFE HOSPITAL MILESTONE
A simulation involving an out-of-control grass fire was held on April 28 at the Nambour Showgrounds. Exercise Ignis was designed to provide a realistic evacuation centre scenario delivering hands-on experience for Sunshine Coast Council and Red Cross personnel. More than 40 council and Red Cross staff and volunteers packed three days’ worth of responsive action into four hours. The dynamic field exercise involved practising the registration and intake of evacuees, while establishing registration, sleeping, dining, personal support and pet areas plus site management. Exercise Ignis Red Cross Controller Lyn Gahan says all agencies worked well together. “It was a really successful operation where everyone could have the confidence in being able to learn, adapt and meet challenges and appreciate the partnership within their own teams but also be prepared to adapt and learn from mistakes.”
Last month, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital treated its 10,000th and 10,001st koalas, Bek and her pouch joey Darren. Bek was admitted to the hospital after she was suspected to have been suffering from chlamydia. A PCR (polymerase chain reaction) diagnostic test was performed on her to determine whether she was carrying the disease. “It is important to conduct this test as more than 50 per cent of koalas who are admitted to our Wildlife Hospital are affected with some kind of disease, the most commonly found being chlamydia,” Terri Irwin says. “Thankfully, Bek was fully healthy without any traces of the disease, and we were so delighted that she could be released into her natural habitat along with her little pouch joey Darren.”

$5 MILLION THOMPSON TRUST ENTRUSTED TO THE BUDERIM FOUNDATION
T
he Buderim Foundation, together with philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson, are pleased to announce the Buderim Foundation has become the Trustee for the Roy and Nola Thompson Charitable Trust, which will support people in need throughout the Sunshine Coast region. The Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund will provide grants to support those experiencing financial distress in the Sunshine Coast community. Organisations and groups that provide services for those unable to achieve a modest standard of living, due to challenges of homelessness or domestic violence, are invited to assess their eligibility for the 2021 grants program from May 1. Buderim Foundation chair Dr Russell Stitz says the Buderim Foundation already has a community investment fund of more than $2 million, which is used to support the people who live in the 4556 postcode area. Grants are also provided to not-forprofit organisations outside this postcode area, provided there is a benefit to those who live in this local community. Since its

Dr Stitz says while the Thompson Trust would remain a separate fund, “The Foundation will operate The Buderim Foundation Thompson Fund as it does the Foundation’s other investments. That is, the investment fund will be preserved in
perpetuity with only the revenue being distributed each year. This new Fund will add over $5 million to the Foundation’s investments and is designed specifically to look after those in financial need.” “We are delighted to accept the challenge presented by the Thompsons, whose vision to support those in difficult circumstances is well known”.

He says he looked forward to seeing the revenue earned by the Thompson Fund to benefit those in need on the Sunshine Coast.

QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO RETURNS FOR 2021 It’s back! Queensland’s premier gardening event — the Queensland Garden Expo — is on track to welcome thousands of visitors from far and wide to a three-day celebration in July this year. The nursery industry enjoyed one of its best years on record during 2020, with the recent Nursery Industry Statistics 2019–20 survey of Australian production nurseries revealing a record 2.2 billion plants were produced and sold in Australia last year. Queensland Garden Expo Event Manager Marion Beazley says: “We’re confident the Queensland Garden Expo will provide ample opportunity to nurture this newfound love for gardening with 350 exhibitors — including 55 nurseries — and around 45 guest speakers presenting an action-packed program. “This year we have included a number of Back to Basics talks each day to encourage visitors who are new to gardening, in addition to the wide range of gardening topics that have become firm favourites with our more experienced gardeners. “Attendees can learn, explore and get inspired; and can then find everything they need at the expo, including a choice of more than 60,000 plants ready for sale each

A MOTHER LIKE NO OTHER: CELEBRATING MOTHERS OF DISABILITY

A
s we aim to celebrate Australians with disabilities in our community, we also celebrate the strength and perseverance of the parents who raised them. This Mother’s Day, Ariana Nioa, a 27-year-old Sunshine Coast woman with Down syndrome, hopes to highlight that her mother is like no other. “What my mother has done for me is amazing,” Ariana says. “I don’t know where I would be without her, she changes my life every day.” Ariana was one of two children raised by Anne, who was a single mother after losing her husband in 1997 to bowel cancer. Despite challenges, Anne remained determined to raise Ariana with every opportunity that other children receive. “Every parent wants the world for their
child; that doesn’t change when your child has a disability,” Anne says. “Your hopes for them don’t lower, your determination just increases.” Anne admits the journey wasn’t always easy, and that often it felt impossible to connect with the right services, especially in regional areas. “It was hard as a parent to know that Ariana wanted to be independent and get out into the world and that I couldn’t give that to her on my own,” Anne says. “I wanted to know that Ariana would always taken care of, and one of the best ways to do that was to teach her to support herself. “As with many parents who have a child with a disability, you are always concerned about what will happen when you are no longer able to take care of them.”
Anne began searching for a way for Ariana to learn all the essential skills she needed to look after herself to lead an independent life and soon found Steps Pathways College. The college, which opened in 2017, gives young adults with disabilities and autism the chance to learn essential skills and lead independent lives. Ariana was part of the college’s first cohort and graduated in 2019. Since graduating, Ariana now lives and travels independently, holds down a job, and has a strong support group of friends. “The biggest changes with Ariana have been in her self-confidence, not only I have noticed it, but our family and all our friends have also commented that she has become incredibly self-confident,” Anne says. Since seeing Ariana’s success at the college, Anne is utilising her experiences and knowledge to create a more inclusive environment for people like her daughter. Anne joined the executive team of Steps Pathways College in the hopes of helping other mothers find the same success as her. “It’s about providing the option and opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t have been there,” Anne says. “I hope that as a mother of a child with a disability, I can share my story and help other people know that they’re not alone. “Finding out your child has a disability can be an isolating and intimidating experience, but if we lessen the stigma of asking for support and saying that you need help, so many lives would change.” Ariana couldn’t be prouder of Anne. “My mum stands up for people like me every day; she’s my hero.”

Art for the ages Art studies at Immanuel Lutheran College paved the way for Odessa Mahony-de Vries’ career. This year she returns as Artist in Residence at the school’s annual Arts Festival. WORDS: Gail Forrer.
A
fter a visit to Immanuel Lutheran College’s annual Arts Festival, Odessa Mahony-de Vries was sure she could finally give her parents a definitive answer. In her early high school years, Ms Mahony-de Vries’ parents gave her a choice of schools for her future education. As a young woman who had been making art since she was nine years old, it seemed natural that she found the answer to her parent’s question as she wandered through artworks and sensed the rich atmosphere
of creativity at the college’s Arts Festival. Ms Mahony-de Vries went on to spend her years 10, 11 and 12 at Immanuel Lutheran College and is grateful to her art teacher Lucy Morris who, she says, helped her prepare the art portfolio which gained her entry to the prestigious RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). She has since completed a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art). This was a defining period for the young artist, and during this time she says she changed to a more abstract style. Besides experiencing city living, her adventures included travelling to India and Nepal and driving along the Great Ocean Road. Since then, her style and living experiences have continued to develop and grow and she is expressing this evolution in her own unique visual language. A recent artist residency where she locked herself in a jail cell for eight hours with a set of instructions for painting has also extended her art-making. This was a lockdown of a different sort. During her stay in the cell, she says she drew on the emotions and experiences of her mind and body as she adhered to a strict set of guidelines, finally emerging with an artwork that she says left her ‘exhausted’.

PROFILE Nevertheless, she says her artwork captures how every part of her responded to the feelings of incarceration, discipline, order and lack of alternatives. Additionally, there is another aspect to this experience. “It was also performance art,” she says. “Everything was videoed.” Personally, she says, “It was a way to shake up my own practice.” These days, Ms Mahony-de Vries’ art-making process is a combination of mistakes, intuition, movement, layering, concealing and a collection of visual resolutions and techniques acquired over time. Her recent shows include a solo exhibition titled Sweet & Sour at The United Artist Project and a duo exhibition with Amanda Bennetts titled Experience Colour at the Old Ambulance Station. Later this year you can see her work in a solo show at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC). After heading home from Melbourne, Ms Mahony-de Vries is delighted at the support she has received on the Sunshine Coast. “There is a lot happening here and I have found so much support and opportunities,” she says. She is especially appreciative of the Sunshine Coast Council. Currently, she is working on a 20-metre-long canvas that will hang from the ceiling of the BFAC.

MAROOCHYDORE LIBRARY ART EXHIBITION: CONNECTED Caloundra Regional Gallery in collaboration with Sunshine Coast Libraries present the next exhibition for the Maroochydore Library Art space. Connected explores the vibrant and richly textured paintings by local artist Ilana Cowan. Originally from Israel, Cowan grew up in the Belgian Congo and Brazil. She came to Australia in 1972 where she studied modern languages at Monash University. Influenced by Ms Cowan’s long association with textiles and batik, the paintings offer a reflection of the artist’s heritage and surroundings. When: On now until May 22, 11am-5pm Monday to Saturday. NATHAN CAVALERI ‘DEMONS’ ALBUM TOUR Much of the country was oblivious to the career Nathan Cavaleri led beyond prime time Australia. By age 16 he had toured with BB King as his guest, and played at the Kennedy Centre in front of The Clintons with Etta James and Bonnie Raitt. He’ll share stories of how his love for music deepened during his battle with leukaemia as a kid through to a hilarious encounter with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant after playing to 60,000 people in Zurich after Elton John. Both hailing from Far North Queensland, Ms White and Ms Schubert will travel from Brisbane to Townsville and out west, bringing their music to regional Queensland. pool balances itself out when compared with a few years’ worth of holidays and adds instant value to the property price as well as that “resort” feel. “I think it’s a two-pronged approach,” he says. “[Property owners are] wanting to holiday at home and do those projects they might have been putting off for a while. “But with the property market being so hot at the moment, that’s also encouraging people to invest in their property because they can see the value.” With a bachelor in environmental science, Mr Lynch is passionate about providing customers with a luxury eco-friendly pool package. “What we specialise in is these eco smart pool and landscape packages. We do it with this eco-conscious approach where we use energy-efficient pumps and freshwater pools. “I think when our clients come to us, they want the whole package done and they want someone that is conscious to an eco-responsible approach to the design, the equipment, the materials and the way it’s built.” With 20 years in the industry, Mr Lynch says he has never “closed his books” for pools to be installed before Christmas in the first quarter, but this year he has. The recent renovation trend has also seen an increase in modernised homes hitting the market. With current sale prices so strong,

he recent trend of holidaying from home has kept workers in the renovating industry booked out months in advance as more locals choose to tick projects off around the home. Whether it is as simple as a fresh coat of paint, a kitchen or bathroom upgrade or a new pool, right up to a full structural renovation, the local industry has been run of its feet the past 12 months as more
homeowners jump on the ‘reno-lution’ bandwagon. Sean Lynch from Kunda Park-based Pool Fab is recording a 40 per cent increase in locals enquiring to build a pool on their existing block. “It’s one of the busiest years I’ve had in my career and it’s because people are staying at home and investing in their own property,” Mr Lynch says. Mr Lynch adds the upfront cost of a

98-year-old World War II veteran recently commemorated Anzac Day at Cotton Tree to honour the sacrifices of service personnel. Arthur (Bill) White served for more than seven years as a wireless operator responsible for coding throughout the Coral Sea, Burma, Japan and Europe. “I signed up at the age of 17 and was discharged in 1946 due to ill health – much like everyone else, I suffered from malaria and dengue fever, however, at that point I also think my mental and physical health had been through enough,” Mr White says. It was an eight-year-old Bill who was taken by his father to one of Australia’s first Anzac Day dawn services in 1930 in their hometown of Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia. “My father had fought in World War I and at the time I didn’t fully understand the importance of the day. “Over the years, the significance of Anzac Day has changed quite a bit for me. Obviously after I had served it was a tough day for me and many of my fellow compatriots. “Now I attend Anzac Day and realise

It’s been a year since I began my role as your division nine councillor so I thought I’d reflect on the past year and look forward to some of my future goals. rom space exploration to zombie invasions and saving the planet, locals will soon have the chance to step into a virtual reality (VR) world with a unique experience opening on the Sunshine Coast. Zero Latency is set to open in Birtinya after owners Paul and Renae Kingston fell in love with the concept when they took their son to a Brisbane centre for his birthday. “We experienced it and thought, well,
we’ve got to do that on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Kingston says. “Renae and I have been running our separate businesses on the Coast for over 25 years now, and we were looking for a fun and exciting new venture. “With so much doom, gloom and uncertainty in recent times, the possibility of being able to provide an opportunity for people to socialise, collaborate and compete whilst experiencing the latest in cutting-edge
VR technology appealed greatly to us.” Zero Latency is an Australian company that first opened in Melbourne and now has centres in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Perth. Currently fitting out his space at Capital Place, Mr Kingston says the 20by 10-metre arena, about the size of a tennis court, will allow groups to enter a completely different world as they take part in several games or themes on offer. “It’s a free-roam virtual reality space
where groups of up to eight can go in and collaborate or compete,” he says. “You put on a visor and can see and move around in a virtual world. It’s completely immersive – you’re seeing and hearing things and you’re right in the middle of that game.” Mr Kingston says one of the most popular themes is Zombie Survival, where teams work to fend off swarms of zombies, rebuild defensive barriers and hope to survive. While Paul says he is not the biggest gamer, this theme is “really exciting”. “There are other games too; a save-the-planet game and an exploration game where you walk upside and become weightless. Seeing the look on people’s faces is wonderful too. People take their goggles off and then they can’t believe they are just standing in a room.” Mr Kingston owns an IT company and has had a fascination with computers “since they first turned on”, and says he is amazed by virtual reality. “I think VR is incredible not just from a gaming side but computer efficiency. If you were designing something like a vehicle, you can actually walk around the car rather than just seeing it on a drawing. “There are some very practical uses for VR, and gaming is just one side of it – it gives extra depth and extra experience, rather than just on a screen.” Zero Latency is expected to open in Birtinya in June. NEW LIFE FOR GARDEN
BELOVED PUB GETS MAJOR MAKEOVER
A
landmark Sunshine Coast pub has re-opened after an extensive renovation of its deck, bistro, gaming room, sports bar and kids’ zone. Established in 1957, Kings Beach Tavern has been serving the Caloundra community for nearly 70 years and the staged renovation has included refreshing the whole pub to give light, brighter features throughout. Area manager Paul Fitzsimmons has hired locally to fill the front and back-of house positions and is excited to start the

A local community garden has come to life after the team from Mirvac’s Kawana Shoppingworld helped revive the Eastbank Edible Garden. The centre management team devoted a day to restoring the facility on Sportsmans Parade in Bokarina, with more than $8000 of labour and materials donated by the centre. The Grill’d burger team from Kawana also served lunch to workers and volunteers. The working bee helped restore the garden to its former glory, as a welcoming sanctuary for community events and vital space for Be clients. Be took on the management rights of the Eastbank Edible Garden in January and has used its business links to future proof the facility for expected high demand from clients and the community. “The Eastbank Edible Garden offers huge benefits for local people,” Be acting CEO Rosie Overfield says. “Beyond helping to stay physically active, gardening is a mindful activity that gets people out and about and better connected with others in the community.” The restored garden includes more accessible raised garden beds, as well as an undercover space to hold programs.

JOB HELP FOR VETERANS

Krishell Ennis is hoping other returned female veterans can benefit from a Sunshine Coast-based program to re-join civilian life after service
n commemoration of Anzac Day last week, Caloundra’s Krishell Ennis is hoping time can be taken to highlight support structures available to fellow female veterans during their transition back to civilian life. Ms Ennis hopes through sharing her own struggles, other veterans will navigate the experience a little easier. Ms Ennis joined the Navy when she was 22, and served for nine years as a communications information systems sailor. She found it difficult to find her footing after re-joining civilian life in 2013. “I think the biggest issue when I left, and I think it’s still that way today, is the transition between military and civilian world,” she says. “There is no explanation of your skills and what sort of job you can now go for. “You have to fumble around a lot.” Ms Ennis says this struggle took a mental toll and this can make veterans feel as if no one wants to give them a chance. “Getting my first job, it was hard… I was unemployed for ages. You end up thinking maybe I should just go back [to service] because as far as I know I have all these skills, but no one wants to give me a job.” Ms Ennis believes it is not lack of services, but instead the lack of information about
where to find the right services. “There is no little handy pack that says where you can go when you leave. If you are feeling isolated, especially with mental health, there is nothing that says who your contacts are.” Ms Ennis highlights STEPS Young Veterans Support Program as one of the important resources available to veterans, after she approached the program to undertake a community services diploma. The program provides employment support including helping to identify career pathways, translating military experience into applicable workplace skills, and providing support for how to excel in your new role. “You can talk to them in a different way knowing that they’ll understand; you feel like you don’t have to filter and they’re really open and sharing,” she says. “They have been so encouraging.” “I wanted to start doing a community services diploma and they were so helpful. It was amazing to have someone say ‘hey, we could help you’, rather than just directing you to a website or getting you to do something online.” Ms Ennis hopes that accessing these programs will become standard for veterans and wishes to see a more positive shift in the experience of all veterans.

EWEN MADDOCK PARK UPGRADES COMPLETE Sunshine Coast residents and visitors can enjoy new and improved recreational facilities at Ewen Maddock Dam with Maddock Park re-opening after 12 months. The park features new shelters, tables and benches, a new vessel launch pad and wash bay facility, as well as barbecue facilities, playgrounds, connected concrete pathways and an improved beach sitting area. Seqwater CEO Neil Brennan says dam upgrade work has been completed ahead of schedule. “With only minor improvements remaining, the Ewen Maddock Dam Upgrade will be finished six months ahead of its original 18-month schedule,” he says.
The Ewen Maddock Dam Upgrade – Stage 2A, included raising and strengthening the existing embankment walls, installing a chimney filter, and constructing 1.6-metre-high concrete parapet wall to improve the dam’s capacity to withstand extreme weather events. The $24 million project created about 50 full-time jobs, with more than 600 people inducted on site over the 12 months. For safety, the dam had to be lowered to around 60 per cent capacity and following recent rain, the dam has refilled naturally and is now above 85 per cent capacity.

musical duo who came together during last year’s COVID lockdown yesterday released their highly anticipated EP When It All Changed. Cam Cronk and Simo Taylor are the talent behind Little Mountain and their EP, co-produced with Boy & Bear’s Tim Hart and produced in his Brisbane home studio, is a collection of songs that takes listeners on a journey. “Incorporating beat-driven rock tracks, and beautiful, melodic storytelling, When It All Changed is an EP with broad appeal and one that offers listeners a real chance to connect lyrically and musically on many levels,” Mr Cronk says.
Harnessing the sounds of indie folk and melodic rock, Little Mountain’s main influences include Boy & Bear, Fleetwood Mac, Pixies, Paul Kelly and Middle Kids. They released their first single, Devil’s Jaded, in October 2020, and their second single, Suitcase Memories, earlier this year on January 24. To celebrate their latest success, the pair is set to hold a launch party on May 15 at The Farm in Meridan Plains. en years ago, I stopped eating anything that had a face. I had tried to be an ethical consumer for a long time before that and my meat consumption had fallen away in the lead-up, but becoming a full-blown vegetarian was a decisive step. It felt right and a decade on, it still does. But while embracing a vegetarian diet has brought me better balance in my body and conscience, I am still surprised how often my choice offends others. Revealing my dietary preference is like telling them I worship the moon. Many omnivores still think vegetarians are weirdos. I don’t just mean the presumption that all vegetarians must be militant animal-rights activists or are super judgy of meat eaters (most of us aren’t). Otherwise intelligent people have strangely presumed I eat only vegetables. I have been asked “how do you stay healthy?” and “if you don’t eat meat, what do you eat?” But vegetarianism is growing, with more than one in nine people in Australia now thought to be eschewing meat. The science to support it is strong: livestock

production contributes a huge portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, feedlots are environmental disasters; the consumption of too much animal protein and fats have strong links to the development of heart disease and cancer. Vegetarian comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning invigorated. And most of us are. We need not be iron-deficient, protein-poor or undernourished because we do not eat meat. Some of us also find contentment in knowing our aliveness has not grown from the death of others. Others are vegetarian for dietary reasons or religious ones. On medical advice for improved health, more and more people are having meatfree days. At the unhealthy end, almost all fast-food restaurants have vego options. And while meat-based dishes will not be consumed by vegetarians, vego dishes are tasty for all. At the most recent functions I have attended, my requested vegetarian lunches have been snaffled by omnivores before I could get to them. It is a standard recommendation for all people to have a plant-based diet, but somehow vegetarians are still seen as outsiders, perceived as difficult, fussy, selfish and problematic at dinner parties. I do not sit in judgment of others who tuck into a steak or tender leg of lamb. I just don’t want to put it in my own mouth. I am happy to have what others consider a side dish as my main. A bowl of salad is a meal to me at a barbecue. But we vegos certainly don’t need a big production to be made because we are not hoeing into a rib fillet or chicken kebab. Where other people’s dietary preferences or needs are concerned, acceptance is a dish best served warm.

More than nine out of 10 parents think digital devices negatively distract their own lives, and 83 per cent think their children are also negatively distracted by digital gadgets. While parents find digital technologies useful in staying connected with their children and keeping them safe, threequarters of parents think it is difficult to control their child’s digital habits. As many as 65 per cent of parents also admit that negotiating the use of digital media and technologies at home causes conflicts with their children. “Parents think that digital media and technologies have a dual power of offering children both benefits and drawbacks,” says Professor Pasi Sahlberg, deputy director of the Gonski Institute for Education. “Hence, we need smart solutions to address these complex

Ashley Robinson says the Sunshine Coast Stadium stands to win some big bucks – but only if the federal government plays ball.
Sami Muirhead misses going to the movies and has planned out the rest of the year according to the new releases she plans to go and see.
ecently, I was a late invite to a media launch of sorts about plans for an upgrade of the stadium that has been driven by local legends Roy Thompson and Rod Forrester, who have stumped a bucketload of money towards it on the proviso that local, state and federal government shoulder a fair lump of the costs. So the council and the state government have pledged their bit, but it now all hinges on the federal government. Now the reason for media scrum was because if the feds don’t kick the tin, the whole deal is off. Roy and Rod get to either keep their cash or give it to another cause, which probably is most likely knowing how generous they are. Talk about opportunity lost. I was attending as a Falcons member and Billy Moore as an ex NRL legend, businessman and community member. What I didn’t know when I got there after a short intro from council about what they are trying to achieve, that it was the Billy and Tugboat show. Thankfully Billy went first and covered why we need it – footy of all codes, major touring shows, jobs and the
list goes on. I had nothing left to do but remind everyone that as a safe conservative seat we get bugger all from the big end of town, but it has to change. I am sure the State LNP never thought they would lose Caloundra, but history was made when they lost it at the last election and that could happen here if we finally decide we have had enough of being taken for granted. Hopefully the Andrew and Ted show get the message and pass it on to the Big House. My second point is all these ‘No High Rise, No Light Rail’ basically ‘no’ to everything signs around town. Strangely, some of them are hung on the verandas of three-storey beachfront houses. The same folk also bring out the old chestnut about not wanting to be another Gold Coast. Well I disagree. I don’t want to be Surfers, but I do want some of their infrastructure and sporting facilities. There is the possibility of a little thing called the Olympics that the feds and locals might need to be reminded about and some of this stuff might come in handy? Let’s hope Andrew and Ted have a fruitful adventure.

rab your popcorn, people, because I would like to talk about movies. I miss going to the cinema. It was something my girlfriends and I would do every few months on a school night; meet for Mexican food and a margarita and go and watch a movie. It always made me smile. Many of us have not gone to the movies since 2019. Here is a list of releases scheduled to come out in the next eight months, so you can plan your social life around the big screen. If you are anything like me, you find it fun having something wonderful to look forward to in life. In June, Fast and the Furious 9 will race into the movies and I cannot wait for this next chapter in the saga that has endured for almost two decades and has earned more than $5 billion around the world. Sometimes we just need fast cars and bad storylines to really forget reality. In July, Space Jam: A New Legacy hits the big screen and it stars Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. The original Space Jam was released 25 years ago and remains my husband’s and son’s favourite movie. So, this new sequel is bound to be
a hit as it combines two very different worlds: professional basketball and Looney Tunes. Later in the year, we will see Respect be released which is the story of Aretha Franklin played by Jennifer Hudson. Cannot. Wait. For. This. One. For the kids, there are sequels coming out of Boss Baby and The Addams Family. How great will it be to see Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley? HOW MUCH NOISE IS TOO MUCH?
THINK OF YOUR HEALTH AND GET CHECKED BreastScreen Queensland’s free service is returning to the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital until May 14, and local women are encouraged to put their health first and book a breast screen. Queensland women can’t afford to skip breast screens, as one in every seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85. Medical director of BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Dr Alison Roper says it’s important for women to find time for themselves. “A 30-minute breast screen every two years could literally save a woman’s life and ensure they are there for their family in the future,” Dr Roper says.
“What screening does is bring forward the time at which breast cancer can be diagnosed, so that the cancer can be found when it’s small, confined to the breast and hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes,” she says The BreastScreen Queensland Service is free, female, fast and friendly. Women aged 50 to 74 are strongly encouraged to have regular screens however the service is free to women aged 40 and over.

Sound is measured in decibels (dB). To give you an idea, normal breathing is about 10 dB, a whisper or a breeze in the trees is about 20 dB, and conversations at home are roughly 50 dB. A clothes dryer can register roughly 70 dB, and a lawnmower is around 90 dB. Very loud sounds include fireworks (150 dB) or shotgun blast (170 dB). How do you know if it is too much? It all depends on three things: How loud is the sound? How far away is it? And how long were you exposed? A close-range gun blast may be brief, but the intensity and proximity are enough to cause immediate hearing damage. Likewise, while a hairdryer isn’t as loud as a gun, if you’re operating one for hours every workday at a hair salon, you can start to experience hearing loss. If the after-effects of being noise exposed include your speech sounds muffled or full and ringing in the ears, then you’ve probably done some damage to your hearing. Any pain in the ears is also a big red flag. There is not much you can do at this point except give your ears a rest, lay off the headphones for a few days. It’s about this time you should

CONSTRUCTION CHANGES FORCED ON BUILDERS Timber shortages combined with increased demand for new builds and renovations are changing the building industry. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ouse builders who are already under pressure to deliver on the raft of new homes under contract due to the first homebuyer grant schemes now have their backs against the wall for another complex reason. Ross Norman, CSR Construction Systems’ regional general manager QLD, says the schemes provided a great boost to the residential building industry but several builders who eagerly signed contracts have found they can’t meet the handover deadlines. A shortage in timber is causing a lot of the problems. The bushfires have affected supply and so too has the cessation of Australian timber supplies from Canada due to the high tax tariff. “Framing companies have pre-bought and wrapped up their allocations,” Mr Norman explains. “They traditionally were able to get out 25 or 30 frames a month or a week, but they have had to forward order three to six months and they now are allocating probably one third of those framing allocations because of such a shortage in timber.” Steel prices have also risen.

With fixed-price contracts in place and build costs now up by between 20 and 40 per cent, some builders are finding they have to go back to the consumer with revised options as their pricing does not stack up. “Consumers are getting concerned and some are choosing to cancel their contract,” Mr Norman says. “A lot of builders are happy to give back deposits because they can’t meet their obligations.”
These builders are looking for alternative framing solutions and facade options such as autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), which CSR markets as Hebel. “Hebel is getting substituted in for a lot of facade work over bricks as there is a shortage of bricklayers and their prices are going up,” Mr Norman says. The builders can self-perform the use of AAC, which can eliminate the need for
a facade specialist. “I think that is extremely smart,” he adds. Mr Norman believes that AAC is going to be an ongoing choice by builders. “I really think they are going to have to otherwise we are going to see so many really good builders not around and that is a shame,” he says. “The bigger ones will get bigger, and the smaller ones could fade away. “I think that is a big blight on the industry if we lose good builders and don’t support them.”

I'm here to say that negative gearing is doomed, and Positive cash flow is King. It's a controversial call, but let me break it down for you. The average negative gearing scenario happens something like this: Mr & Mrs Smith are making good money. They see their tax bill every year and it's a shock.. they're paying a lot. ooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club is incredibly excited to announce that their U17 team has won the Australian Titles Gold for the Patrol Competition for the first time in the Club’s history. The Champion Patrol event at the Aussies 2021 is one of the most challenging events in the Australian Titles competition. The competition was a gruelling 10.5 hours on the beach competing across all disciplines of surf life saving. The SLSA Champion Patrol Competition aims to demonstrate how lifesavers work as a team in performing the skills associated with surf rescue patrol work. It is the ultimate team event in surf life saving. The event consists of a theory paper, physical events (surf-teams, board-tube-rescue relay), a team resuscitation, patient assessment and a life-saving scenario. Then in a nail-biting finale, the U17 team came home with the gold. The U17 Mooloolaba Champion Patrol consisted of Rylee Jones, 15, Hayden Notley, 16, Connor Dick, 16 and Kiera Bascombe, 15 and was coached by Corey Linton and Shane Linton as team manager. This tight-knit group of junior lifesavers worked tirelessly for six months, training two to three times a week, as well as studying at home, to
take out the top spot. The Champion Patrol event aims to demonstrate how lifesavers work as a team in performing some or all of the skills associated with surf rescue patrol work. The competition is extremely tough, with participants
studying and training for months to be physically and mentally fit. This is an unbelievable result for these young adults, and Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club is incredibly proud that these are the lifesavers of the future. – MSLSC
LIGHTNING BUILDING TO SEASON START Sunshine Coast Lightning has continued to draw on the life lessons of 2020 this pre-season, with flexibility proving to be an ongoing asset. Queensland’s recent string of COVID cases led to Lightning’s two Kalgoorlie trial games against West Coast Fever to be cancelled, but head coach Kylee Byrne refuses to dwell for too long. Despite the change in plans, the buzz of excitement around the club is stronger than ever. “We were really disappointed not to get to play Fever in Kalgoorlie,” says Ms Byrne. “That was an important part of our pre-season, particularly having the South Africans and Cara back from the Diamonds – it was going to be a great hit out with the team of 10. “Given those lost opportunities, we just hit the training court hard and prepared for the Firebirds next Tuesday night.” Lightning has two practice matches remaining before season proper, a game against Queensland Firebirds and one against the Queensland Men’s. “We will put everything out there and it will be a really good gauge of where we are at,” she says. “[Firebirds] have played some really good games in their pre-season. “We played them in early February, so that recap will help illustrate how much we’ve moved (and they’ve moved) since then and what we need to keep on building for Round 1.” The club will go head-to-head with Collingwood Magpies in the league season opener on Saturday May 1 next week. Lightning will endeavour to become the only team to make five consecutive finals campaigns in the Suncorp Super Netball competition this season. While recent external speculation pegs Lightning to be one of the teams that could drop out of finals contention, Byrne is happy to adopt the ‘underdog’ status. “I love being the underdog – it happens every single year,” she says. “I really love to see it, it means that we can be a bit unpredictable and take teams that people aren’t expecting. “In saying that, I know the other teams have the

Caloundra 12 mile and the bottom end of the Banks has been good for a few pearl perch and sweetlip along with the odd good-sized tusk fish. The bays at Noosa and Mooloolaba, there has been lots of surface action with long tail tuna and mackerel taking metal slugs snapper are starting to show up in better sizes and numbers at the Hards. The Pumistone Passage has been good for a few flathead and plenty of mud crabs in Coochin Creek as we have had big tides due to the supermoon. The Maroochy River has been fishing very well at the moment up towards Chambers Island with some quality jew fish on live baits in the deeper holes. Borumba is still the best for bass and Wurtulla beach for some bream and dart.
