From the editor The Sunshine Coast attracts people from all over world with myriad life experiences. This week, in her regular profile series, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw finds out how a New York educated doctor came to live in Australia and carve out a brand-new career. It’s a fascinating story and one that I believe, will strengthen our own desire to live an authentic life. Everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing and how the community deals with the provision of housing is a key sign of a strong community. At the moment, as we live through an increasingly challenging private rental market, once again, the topic of housing claims the spotlight. This week in our feature story we report on Sunshine Coast Regional

Council’s February roundtable forum on homelessness and initiatives taken to provide affordable housing by Coast groups and the state government. Additionally, to give context to the subject, there is a brief history of Australian government housing projects since 1915. Consent education needed

QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT TRIES TO WOO SOUTHERN TOURISTS

he teaching of sexual consent in Queensland schools will be reviewed amid ongoing reports of rape from current and former students. Education Minister Grace Grace (pictured) says the review comes after disturbing stories from young Queenslanders about sexual violence as part of a national campaign started by 22-year-old Sydney woman Chanel Contos. “While I am sure we all agree that it is a responsibility of parents, carers and society more broadly to educate and support young people in addressing issues of sexual harassment, assault and consent, we also recognise that education and schools are part of the solution,” Ms Grace told parliament recently. “The time is right to examine education on these matters in all Queensland schools.” The review will examine whether the Respectful Relationships program addresses sexual consent and reporting and if the physical education curriculum is addressing the needs of students. Ms Grace will also seek the views of young people on

respectful relationships education through her student advisory council. The move to address sexual consent among young people comes amid rising calls for systemic change in addressing sexual assault across the country. In particular, Ms Contos’ Teach Us Consent campaign encouraged thousands of people to share stories of assault and harassment suffered while they were at school. Her movement wants consent, related to sexual activity, to be taught earlier in schools and to include lessons about toxic masculinity, rape culture, slutshaming, victim-blaming, sexual coercion, enthusiastic consent and queer sex. She started the movement three weeks ago, using her Instagram account to call for stories of rape from graduates of Sydney’s single-sex private schools. Ms Contos has been publishing confronting testimonies on a website – teachusconsent.com – where almost 30,000 people have already signed a petition for earlier consent education.

The Queensland government is trying to woo southerners back to the sunshine state after a year of disruption from its own COVID-related border closures. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the campaign will highlight attractions in Cairns, the Whitsundays, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Queensland’s tourism sector has been under pressure in recent months amid trepidation among southerners about border closures. But Ms Palaszczuk says demand is starting to return and the campaign indicates state borders may remain open in the longer-term. The state government has already announced $1 million in funding to help school students visit the Great Barrier Reef in a bid to boost the flagging tourism industry. The measure comes as the sector braces for the end of the federal government’s JobKeeper wage subsidy payments later this month. Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has promised a stimulus package for the pandemic-hit industry, but the state government is also chipping in with its own measures. The student funding will support operators and allow more than 6500 pupils to learn about the reef. The state will provide $150 for each eligible student in primary and high schools from the start of the third term on July 12. The government is also running a travel voucher raffle to help draw the state’s travellers to the far north. All Queenslanders can go into the draw for one of 15,000 travel vouchers, each worth up to $200. Winners will get a 50 per cent discount on travel experiences such as reef and rainforest tours. – AAP

Home sweet home AN INFLUX OF NEWCOMERS TO THE SUNSHINE COAST HAS CREATED AN UNPRECEDENTED HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS. MY WEEKLY PREVIEW LOOKS AT WHAT IS BEING DONE. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

our years of solid work, ups and downs, fears and joys melted into a moment of elation for a Maleny community group last December. CHASM (Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny) members finally saw their Small House Project come to fruition, with tenants moving into a home fundraised for and built, according to the Maleny housing group’s plans. CHASM co-founder and project co-ordinator Marg McKenzie says phase one of the Small House Project included this pilot project, built in Maleny’s community garden on Bicentenary Lane. Phase two planned the building of a further nine small houses. While they will not continue with phase two of the project, Ms McKenzie says they now have a demonstration model. “From here we are able and happy to participate as a group and share all the learnings and insights that came with completing a home, with other groups.” That’s one house with a long-term rental agreement for one couple in the midst of an affordable housing crisis on the Sunshine Coast. A recent influx of people moving to the COVID-safe Sunshine Coast has seen a lift in property prices. As always, there are winners and losers, as real estate is bought and sold, rental properties are taken off the market and investors move

in or new owners up the rent. The result is less rental housing, soaring rents and people without a place to call home. Charities report record numbers requesting housing help and it’s not just about money. Agencies also report that working people are simply unable to rent a home, because there is not enough rental stock available. In recognition of the crisis, on February 17 Sunshine Coast Council held a homelessness forum hosted by Mayor Mark Jamieson at Venue 114, Bokarina. Key government agencies, church groups and community organisations attended. The meeting examined the Sunshine Coast’s homelessness response during COVID-19, the emerging housing crisis as well as place-based responses to address rough sleeping in our community, crisis options needed in our region and ongoing advocacy work required. Sunshinecoastnews.com.au reported that a range of innovative overnight accommodation solutions such as use of carparks and buses modified with sleeping pods were mooted. A key outcome of the meeting was to progress three regional advocacy opportunities: • the exploration of opportunities with the State Government to enable the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme to require social and affordable housing as a condition of development and remove

CHASM’s Small House Project and CHASM housing co-ordinator Marg McKenzie inhibitors in the planning system to housing diversity • engage local business leaders, commercial property owners, private sector stakeholders and philanthropists with an aim to drive investment into crisis accommodation and shelter options • advocate to the Federal and State Government for a funded assertive outreach service for people rough sleeping in public spaces and other locations. This is to proactively initiate face-to-face contact, provide access, assessment and appropriate referrals.

The Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Directory is a pocket-sized guide containing details for organisations that are providing services for the homeless or those at risk. The Sunshine Coast Council has also worked collaboratively with the State Government, IFYS Ltd and the University of the Sunshine Coast to undertake a research project which involves an evaluation of the Sunshine Coast COVID-19 Housing Crisis Response and examination of homelessness on the Coast. myweeklypreview.com.au

Sunshine coast affordable housing providers

n the Sunshine Coast, Coast2Bay Housing Group delivers both community and affordable housing programs to the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions. The Coast2Bay portfolio includes nearly 500 dwellings. Their main aim is to make available viable housing to the people who need it. For instance, one of their properties is

a two-storey, Nambour home. The home has nine bedrooms and share facilities such as a kitchen. It is rented out to women, specifically those over 55, who account for the fastest growing homeless group in Australia, for $175 per week inclusive of electricity, water and internet. Purpose Real Estate (a branch of Coast2Bay Housing) manages the property. Purpose Real Estate housing manager Lindell Gittoes says this accommodation style has proved very successful. “It’s been in operation for a few years, and especially over COVID the women really supported and helped each other out.” Homes placed in the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) by their owners are also managed by Purpose Real Estate. The NRAS scheme is an Australian Government scheme with state governments who issue financial incentives to organisations (property owners) that provide people on low to moderate incomes with an opportunity to rent homes at a rate that is at least 20 per cent below market value rent. NRAS homes are not social housing – they are affordable private rental homes. It was

Lindell Gittoes – housing manager Purpose Real Estate started in 2008 and ended in 2014/15. NRAS still covers current housing leases, many beginning to end now. This month Coast2Bay housing COO Lee Banfield says the organisation saw the first of their NRAS properties (which total approximately 45) handed back to the owner and subsequently sold. “This is the first of many properties[as leases end] that will go over the next two to three years,” Ms Banfield says. At this point, she is not certain how they will be replaced and is urging the government to review the scheme.

Queensland Government Build-to-Rent Scheme In Brisbane, the Queensland Government has attracted big developers to their Build-to-Rent scheme. The multi-million-dollar scheme was revealed by the Queensland Government in December 2018, to partner with the private sector in delivering low-rental homes in high-rental areas, like inner-Brisbane. Since then, the Queensland Government has approved two Brisbane-based affordable housing projects by developers: Frasers Property at 210 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley and Mirvac at 60

Skyring Terrace, Newstead. Combined, these properties will offer almost 750 apartments in total with up to 240 dwellings to be provided at a discounted rent. Construction is anticipated to commence this year, with tenants to access the housing in late 2023. Mirvac has lodged plans with the Brisbane City Council to build 395 mostly studio or one-bedroom apartments on the site (60 more than what was originally approved), fewer car parks and over 500 bicycle parking spaces. The Government is embracing the Build-to-Rent model as a means of

increasing the supply of affordable housing in southeast Queensland. A spokesperson from Queensland Treasury says there are no such projects at this stage on the Sunshine Coast. The Brisbane projects are of a size that make it economically feasible for developers to include the affordable housing element. Such development generates long-term rental income for developers, rather than up-front sales or capital growth, thereby driving incentives for an increased focus on residential tenants.

While charities are describing the current housing crisis as the worst they have ever seen, it is not a new issue on the Coast, or indeed anywhere in Australia. It’s a problem rarely off the political agenda and one that over the years, various government and relevant associations have sought to tackle through a diverse range of wellmeaning, though not always successful programs. From 1912-1918, several state governments established various financial schemes focused on making home ownership more attainable for more of the working class. In addition, the Commonwealth government established the War Service Homes Scheme in 1919. The Commonwealth Housing Commission was established in 1943 and in 1945 Commonwealth State Housing Agreement (CSHA) allowed the states to establish and operate public housing as funded by the Commonwealth via cheap loans. Under the first CSHA which was in place from 1945 to 1956, public housing stock nationwide rose from next to zero to 96,292 dwellings. In 1956, a new CSHA was severely reduced and allowed the selling of public housing via any means they saw fit, and private home ownership was encouraged. From 1956 onwards, roughly 90,000 public housing dwellings built under the CSHA were sold across Australia. Since the 1980s, governments have continued to provide varying amounts for first-home deposits.

Surf Life Saving Clubs on the Sunshine Coast will benefit from upgraded equipment and bolstered training programs thanks to a federal government boost. The $9.7 million in funding will allow clubs to access up to $10,000 per annum over the next two years to purchase new or replacement patrol equipment such as rescue boards, life jackets, rescue manikins, inflatable rescue boats, all-terrain vehicles, defibrillators, first aid and medical supplies. The new funding also includes $6.6 million over two years to continue providing vocational education and training (VET) to volunteers and build on SLSA’s capability.

Sunshine Coast artisan distillers and craft brewers now have more opportunities to grow their business operating under their own, tailor-made, liquor licence. Small-scale liquor producers can apply for a new artisan producer licence after the Artisan Liquor Bill was passed by state parliament on March 9. “This sector was identified as an up-and-coming powerhouse, not only within Queensland’s liquor industry but in the state’s greater business landscape,” Attorney General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman says. Prior to COVID-19, Queensland craft brewers and artisan distillers employed nearly 2000 people, contributing significantly to the economy.

VOLUNTEERS CLEAN UP THE COAST

Two Sunshine Coast beaches have been named in Surf Life Saving Queensland’s top 10 beaches. Kings Beach placed fourth while Mooloolaba Beach came in at number seven. SLSQ lifesaving services manager Peta Lawlor says a range of factors, including safety, are considered: “Determining our top 10 is always a tough job, but it allows us to highlight some of the safer beaches for swimmers to visit.” The summer season saw Queensland lifesavers and lifeguards perform 1700 rescues, 299,075 preventative actions and 17,406 first aid treatments. “We have seen some challenging surf conditions on southeast Queensland beaches throughout summer, which has kept our patrols busy.”

Around 1400 registered volunteers pitched in to help make the Sunshine Coast environment a cleaner place, picking up 207 wheelie bins of rubbish across the region as part of Clean Up Australia Day earlier this month. There were 98 registered Sunshine Coast clean-up sites including 27 schools, 71 Clean Up Australia Day sites and another 25 sites coordinated by Goodlife Community Centre. Groups collected almost eight tonnes of general rubbish – the equivalent to 186 wheelie bins – and recycled almost one tonne or 21 wheelie bins.

unshine Coast health charity Wishlist is unveiling plans to deliver a significant project expected to help ease the burden of hospital stays for patients and their families. Wishlist Centre will include a four-level transitionary care facility directly adjacent to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The federal government is also announcing a $12-million commitment to the project, which will begin construction in mid-2021. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the centre is the culmination of years of planning and will fill a much-needed void for the region and those who travel for medical care. “On completion, Wishlist Centre stage one accommodation will support more patients and families/carers who may not otherwise be able to afford to

Ms Rowe says the facility, due to open in late 2022, will be supported by not-for-profit, the public and private sectors. “We are currently seeking expressions of interest from like-minded commercial partners for our ground floor tenancies, specifically in the medical, allied health and specialist services categories.”

Commonwealth Bank’s first-half fiscal 2021 cash earnings of $3.88 billion and an interim dividend of $1.50 per share were in line with our forecasts. The real surprise, however, was the bank’s much stronger capital position, with a pro forma common equity tier-one (CET1) ratio of 13 per cent being some 50 basis points (bp) ahead of our forecast. A key driver of this was a 10bp contribution from favourable credit risk migration, in other words, CBA needed to put less regulatory capital aside to cover the risks of its loans defaulting, against our expectation of a material headwind. CBA has also upgraded its base-case scenario and now expects no further impact from credit risk migration, having previously factored in a 70bp headwind to capital. The major banks all model their credit risk migration scenarios slightly differently, which makes direct comparisons difficult. That said, at their fiscal 2020 results in

We struggle to see CBA being that different to its peers. The key disappointment was costs, and we note that operating expenses have risen in every half-year period since CBA unveiled its absolute cost reduction target in the first half of fiscal 2019. The absolute cost reduction mantra remains but it is now highlighted as a long-term goal and management emphasised that it would continue to prioritise investments over achieving short-term cost reduction. We are reticent to criticise the focus on long-term investment, but increases in our expense forecasts have partly offset our upgrades to

NOT ALL HAPPY WITH JOBKEEPER SUBSTITUTE Major banks have thrown their support behind the federal government’s postJobKeeper scheme but some business groups are far from happy, with one labelling it “second-class support”. The much-awaited $1.2 billion package offers cheap loans to small- and mediumsized businesses still struggling to recover from last year’s recession and half-price airfares to help a deflated aviation sector. The scheme aims to fill the stimulus gap when the JobKeeper wage subsidy ends later this month with 10-year loans featuring 24-month repayment holidays, while funding is being provided so airlines can offer domestic flights between April and July at a 50 per cent discount. Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh (pictured) says banks are working with the government to deliver the loans, describing the scheme as the right product for the times. Australian Airports Association chief executive James Goodwin expects the new funding will encourage Australians to start booking flights. “Anything that can fill seats and put more aircraft in the sky is a good thing and will have flow-on effects for the airport sector,” he says. The Regional Aviation Association says without support measures, companies cannot sustain losses in continuing flights that provide vital medical supplies and freight to regional communities. Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott also believes it will be a job-saving package and a huge boost for some the hardest-hit regions. But the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the package falls short of what is needed to save many flailing tourism, accommodation and hospitality businesses. ACCI’s executive chair for tourism John Hart says it fails to provide support for CBDs, especially Sydney and Melbourne, does not assist those who are unable to wait for loans to kick in and avoids setting out a road map to open the country to international visitors. A new chapter be-GINS in Eumundi The Imperial Hotel Eumundi is on the cusp of a transformation.

he iconic pub - which has been a stalwart of Eumundi life since it first opened in 1911 - is expanding its offerings, taking important steps to future proof its historic charm. In a year that has significantly impacted the hospitality industry, The Imperial Hotel has not only launched a new Gin Distillery, but continued forward with plans to open a brand new accommodation offering on site later this year. “We’re excited to have just opened the doors of the boutique Eumundi Distillers, launching the new Folktale Gin label,” The Imperial Hotel Eumundi Manager Paul Thomas said. “The distillery is the perfect complement to the well-established Eumundi Brewery.” The optimism is a far cry from this time last year when The Imperial was, like all businesses in Queensland, faced with the unknown that was COVID-19.

“Obviously COVID reduced the number of tourists to zero overnight, all gigs were cancelled, weddings postponed and cancelled,” Mr Thomas said. During the height of the lockdown The Imperial turned its focus to takeaway, but as restrictions eased, they did all they could to not only get their business back on track but moving forward. “Once we were able to re-open we did so

for 10 people at a time, then 20 at a time per area, and this gradually increased along with restriction easing in stages,” Mr Thomas said. “We thought it was important to keep live music going in the venue when we were allowed to, as we are the home of live music and to support the industry and most importantly our regular musicians.” VSC was able to support The Imperial Hotel by providing support for their live music grant applications. Right now, visitors are encouraged to check out the Imperial’s new Eumundi Distillers Folktale Gin which includes two unique bottles - the Folktale Eumundi Gin and Folktale Navy Strength Eumundi Gin. Sunshine Coast author Shari Hall bares her soul in her new book, in the hope of inspiring others. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ow does a cardiothoracic anaesthesiologist from New York end up living on the Sunshine Coast working in aged care? How does a medical scientist with no religious beliefs find God? How does a self-destructive woman who feels worthless learn to love herself? All these questions and more are answered in Shari Hall’s stunning new memoir, Perfect Love: One Woman’s Journey from Flesh to Faith. The Buderim author has laid her soul bare in this compelling book, which details her life from difficult

beginnings in Buffalo, New York to her success in the medical world, to giving it all away to follow her heart. The book is subtitled A Musical Memoir and has an accompanying CD, which was produced in 2012 and led to the writing of the book. “I knew those stories were worth sharing; not just the songs but the stories behind those lyrics,” she says. “But one of the things preventing me from putting pen to paper was that I had a public persona. I was a very inspirational, uplifting, encouraging and professional woman.

There was a fear of being extremely vulnerable and exposing parts of myself that were not visible or known to the world, except maybe to a handful of close personal family and friends. “But I can now say that I am so comfortable with who I am as a woman, with myself mentally, spiritually and emotionally and I am so supported in so many ways by my children, my partner and my spiritual faith, that I thought it was an important story to tell.” Raised mostly by her white mother with her black jazz musician father coming in and out of her life, Dr Hall showed musical and theatrical talent early on but, determined to break free of poverty, went into medicine. She became a cardiothoracic anaesthesiologist and spent time in the humanitarian field, working in Guatemala and travelling to Australia to work at Aboriginal outreach locations. But she had a burning desire to create music and while living in New York, wrote and recorded her first CD, since followed by three more. She met her Australian ex-husband in 1998 while working at Cairns Hospital and has two children who are dual US-Australian citizens. She could be earning $800,000 a year as a cardiothoracic anaesthesiologist but chose to retire in order to pursue her music. “One of the pivotal decisions I made, which I write about early in the book, was the choice I made to pursue medicine for the wealth and prestige and to change my economic stars versus following my passion in my heart. That led me down a self-destructive path I was not going to come back from.” Dr Hall says she wrote her book – which is extremely revealing – to show people to trust in themselves and their God-given talents. “I ask so many questions along the way in the book, however, if you trust your

intuition and your gut and go with what’s right and go with what’s natural and do something that allows you to contribute in a positive way to the lives of others, if there’s that sense of love in what you’re doing and a goodness in it, that’s the direction you should be going in.” Dr Hall bravely details her numerous forays into sex, drugs and alcohol and how finding God saved her from that life. “This is why the title is from Flesh to Faith,” she says. “There is a lot of flesh – literally – in the book. I’m not ashamed of the things I’ve done, but I do feel a sense of shame in exposing the real, raw life experiences we all go through. But I believe there might be a bigger, deeper plan for why we’ve been sent here for this one minute in time. “A big part of this journey, which I don’t get to until one of the final chapters of the book, is who am I if I’m not Dr Shari Hall? I’m just Shari now. I won’t ever lose those titles, but it’s not what defines me as a human being anymore. It’s just me, my true, beautiful, authentic self. What defines me now is the love and joy I emanate to the world and try to be the best person I can to the benefit of others. I work in an aged care home. I exercise with them, I play bingo with people who are in their seventies and eighties. Maybe my sweet, shining, loving soul is the last thing they will see. “People look at me in my thrift store clothes and say, ‘how could you give that up?’ It’s not who I am. I would walk barefoot rather than go back.”

We all have a role to play when it comes to being prepared. Students can enter in teams of one to five people and the winning team will be mentored by Council’s disaster management team to create Council’s 2021 Get Ready television, radio and social media campaign. Winning team members each receive a family evacuation kit. Runner-up prizes include Get Ready packs and emergency kits. The community will then have their chance to vote for their favourite finalist, with the winner to be announced on 18 June on Council’s Facebook page. The ELS provides an integrated and proactive approach to maintaining the liveability of our region and building on our outstanding environmental credentials. The strategy exemplifies our region’s forward thinking and real actions to plan for and manage our response to the impacts of a changing climate. The ELS has already guided a number of significant outcomes for our community, which includes launching Blue Heart Sunshine Coast, progressing a UNESCO Biosphere nomination, developing a Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy and securing more land for conservation and recreation, just to name a few. Nambour pottery studio is gaining popularity as a “gym for your mental health” with its therapeutic space perfect for those looking for a social, creative or personal outlet. The Pottery Studio began four years ago after owner Rod Constantinides realised there was nowhere for him to enjoy pottery as a hobby.

General manager Gaby Sheridan says the studio was initially set up for the region’s younger residents, but all ages are loving what is on offer. “The Sunshine Coast needed something for young people to do that was a bit different and not just going out for dinner,” she says. The studio offers a range of classes including social clay and wine or coffee sessions, school holiday workshops and

longer courses for those who want to do wheel throwing and sculpture making. Ms Sheridan says the business directive is growing towards providing an outlet for people’s mental health through the creative process. “For us, pottery is so tactile and grounding; it’s really therapeutic,” she says. “We really try to focus on the mental health and the therapeutic side of the process. Although it is something you

good as something you might buy, they get a lot of appreciation out of it knowing that they made it.” She says a lot of regulars attend to make gifts and she is always seeing trends come and go, with cups and cheese platters popular right now. The Pottery Studio recently opened The Espresso Studio, a cafe next door that doubles as a place to sell old or left-behind creations. “Currently they have works from last year on sale and all the money goes to local environment charities,” Ms Sheridan says. “It’s a nice way to not waste the things that don’t get picked up.” Ms Sheridan fell in love with pottery while living with a ceramicist during her overseas travels and has been teaching at the studio for more than two years. TEACHING GIRLS TO STAND STRONG

Walking, cycling and scooting along Buderim’s Alfriston Drive is now safer thanks to a $280,000 upgrade. Sunshine Coast Council and the federal government funded the new two-metre wide, 1.2-kilometre concrete pathway on the southern side of Alfriston Drive from Karawatha Street through to Golf Links Road, and councillor Christian Dickson says locals are loving it. “Safety is always council’s top priority and having a wide, smooth pathway to travel along makes for a much easier journey. It’s great to see so many people already taking advantage of the upgrade.” The upgrade has been made possible thanks to $100,000 from the council and $180,000 from the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Carole Newton of Bonjour Wellness is a licensed instructor of Standing Strong, a non-clinical and non-competitive program for boys and girls aged five to 17. “The goal for Standing Strong is to be the support network, the inspiration and the connection children and families need to thrive in this challenging world we live in,” she says. “It is a place where children and teens feel connected and empowered, and also a place for them to explore and grow their own individuality, self-belief, confidence and inner strength.” The program was founded in 2013 by Western Australian Kim Marie Smith who as a young girl struggled with depression, anxiety, body image, bullying and low confidence. Ms Newton has been in the fitness industry since 1999, and knows health is more than the number that appears on

Strong Heart delves into activities like yoga and mindful eating to relate to the discussed topics. Ms Newton currently coaches girls but is looking for a male instructor so she can offer the program to boys. there will be a variety of orchids of different shapes and colours on display to “delight all visitors”. “This is the first orchid show on the Sunshine Coast since March last year, so it is hoped that the public is ready to come out and enjoy the beauty of orchids,” she says. “The many coloured cattleyas have a beautiful perfume, which will fill the hall with scent. “The vandas will remind all visitors of the tropical gardens in Singapore with their bright colours of purple, pink, orange and red. “The dendrobiums are spectacular with the long sprays of flowers.” Visitors can learn how to look after and pot orchids with a demonstration at 10am. Last month it was wonderful to work with children at C&K Coolum to replant a new fig tree outside the Coolum Library. Unfortunately, the existing tree was dying and posed a public safety risk and had to be removed by the council. Children who attended C&K Coolum were quite attached to the tree. They would sit under it, look for birds in it – it provided a special way for the children to connect with nature. The children watched as the tree was removed, fascinated with the machinery and the skills of the arborists and asked what would happen now the tree was gone. In answer, the council invited the children to join in with the workers to plant a replacement tree. With hats, shoes, sunscreen, high-vis vests and gardening gloves (donated by the council) on, the children ventured into the park to plant

This Easter, the Coolum Art Collective is presenting a three-day exhibition featuring art and craft works from some of the Sunshine Coast’s leading artists and artisans. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell says when he received the list of winners, almost every page had a winning Glass House group on it. “Glass House is on the up and up. Round 104 saw us win $193,953 and I was stoked with that, so it’s a real treat to see our local community groups share funding in excess of $200,000.” The GCBF provides sizeable grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes, distributing approximately $53 million per year to Queensland communities. “I always try to encourage as many community groups as possible to apply for these grants,” Mr Powell says. “Applications from the Glass House electorate are usually treated very well due to our abundance of small, volunteer-run organisations.” With round 107 and 108 now closed, applications for round 109 open mid-

POLICE BRIEFS Sippy Downs Police are targeting the Fatal Five offences in response to community complaints regarding speeding through school zones. Sippy Downs officer in charge, acting sergeant Adrian Smith, says it is great to see most of the community being responsible behind the wheel, but he is disappointed to have recently caught five drivers speeding in school zones.

icole Forbes-Hood has never let a vision impairment stop her living a “normal” life as she strives to put the ability back into disability daily. Born with a rare genetic condition known as aniridia, Ms Forbes-Hood grew up challenging the perceptions of her limited vision, something she now

advocates for her two teenage children. “I was the first one in my family to have aniridia and my parents always brought me up to be as independent as possible and not let it stop me,” she says. “I’ve led a pretty normal life. I haven’t been able to drive but have always got around on public transport or with the help of family and friends.”

The Aura resident’s children – 17-year-old son Cameron and 15-year-old daughter Chloe – both inherited the same condition. “I want to set a good example for them to get out there and give anything a go. “My daughter pushes those perception boundaries. She is an air cadet and she is a life saver at Kings Beach.” Ms Forbes-Hood describes her vision like “looking through a foggy window” and says her condition has deteriorated in the past five years. Forced to take a redundancy after unsuccessful eye surgery two years ago, Ms Forbes-Hood says ending a career in finance and superannuation left her feeling like she lost a part of her identity. “Having to give up work was really tough on me. It was always like having to find my own identity again in some ways. “We were building our house here in Aura so there were some positive things to focus on but there were times it was really tough.” In 2020 her focus soon shifted to training for a charity hike up Mount Kilimanjaro for Guide Dogs. With that event cancelled, she is now training for a seven-day charity trek through the rugged Larapinta Trail near Alice Springs this May. “Larapinta is known as one of Australia’s premier walking trails and is quite renowned for its ruggedness and its very rocky and steep conditions,” she says. “Also being in the Northern Territory

you are exposed to extreme weather conditions and the sun.” Ms Forbes-Hood says the 63.3-kilomtere trek will be physically and mentally challenging. “It’s a pretty tough trek for anyone but someone who is legally blind with only a small amount of functional vision and pretty much no depth perception, I know that it is going to be a really tough challenge for me and I’m going to have to dig deep and use all of my senses.” Ms Forbes-Hood’s husband, Manaia, will act as a guide. “I wouldn’t be able to do this trek without a support person,” she says. “He hasn’t done anything quite like this either so he will definitely be out of his comfort zone as well. To prepare, Ms Forbes-Hood is working with a personal trainer, doing Pilates and walking Noosa National Park or Mount Ngungun to familiarise herself with a rocky underfoot. She says her confidence is also improving since receiving her own sight dog, Oskar, nine months ago. “Now with the dog I can get out and walk with my head high, whereas before I would be very slow and walk with my head down. “He has given me that independence and confidence back.” Ms Forbes-Hood’s fundraising goal is $3500 but she says to breed, raise and train one guide dog alone can cost up to $50,000. PATHWAY RENEWAL Renewal of the Warana beach access pathway is now underway in preparation for the continuation of the coastal pathway. The council is replacing the pathway along Beach Access 236 with a wider pathway. This project will be completed in time for Easter school holidays.

AROONA PARK UPGRADE Aroona Park is set for upgrades in the coming months in response to community feedback. The council will resurface the half basketball court and install a new multigoal, while a separate netball hoop will also be built. Later in the year, two small tables and benches in the shelter will be installed, with picnic tables to be replaced near the barbecues.

ight-hundred expectant mothers in developing countries will now have access to a more hygienic birthing experience after Zonta Club of Caloundra’s International Women’s Day fundraiser. The club’s Joan Fitzgerald says after deciding against holding a major event, members and friends gathered at two venues to put the birthing kits together. The kits can be lifesaving, especially as many women in these countries do not have the privilege of giving birth in a hospital or medical clinic. “A birthing kit is a sheet of black plastic, five swabs, a scalpel blade, three ties, rubber gloves and a small piece of soap,” Ms Fitzgerald says. “These all fit into a small plastic bag and are sent to underdeveloped countries to be used wherever a woman gives birth. “These small items greatly assist in the reduced incidence of maternal and natal infections.” Ms Fitzgerald says the group is hoping to hold a similar event later in the year but requires donations to put the $5 birthing kits together. “Of course, anyone who would like to help is welcome to come along at the next event or donations are gratefully accepted on our website.” The club is also benefiting from a fundraising keg at Warana’s Your Mates Brewery. “The brewery launched a ginger beer brewed by their women so the proceeds from the sales of this keg will be donated to Zonta Caloundra,” Ms Fitzgerald says.

irl power is ruling a Caloundra community bank with an all-female branch team and four female non-executive board members. The Community Bank Caloundra board members Ann Sutherland, Elizabeth Taylor, Amanda Zinn and Katie Wilke, together with branch manager Pip Fawcett

and customer relationship manager Angela Forster, are embracing their leadership roles and hope to inspire the next generation of women. In the wake of International Women’s Day earlier this month, Ms Wilke says she hopes the generational impact of this year’s theme, Choose to Challenge, will continue. “With four kids, I am passionate about

demonstrating to the next generation that the glass ceiling only stands where you choose to let it settle,” she says. Community Bank Caloundra chair Colin Rose says he is proud to challenge what a traditionally male-dominated bank board looks like. “For myself it was a heart desire to have younger people join our company board and for as many of them as possible to be women,” Mr Rose says. “Leadership is all about recognising the talents and strengths of others and inspiring them to reach their fullest potential. Branch manager Pip Fawcett is also heavily involved with local surf life saving and empowering young women. “They say it takes a village to raise a child and it’s through organisations such as these that I feel we can demonstrate leadership, empower women and make a real difference,” she says. To date, Community Bank Caloundra has given back more than $450,000 to Caloundra locals through its support of community, sporting and charity groups.

The Kawana Chamber of Commerce kicked off 2021 in laid-back style in February, with its quarterly Sunset Drinks at the Malt Shovel Taphouse in Birtinya. It was fantastic to see many old and new faces at the event. Positivity for 2021 appears to be the theme for our chamber members, and it seems that the future for our region has never looked so bright. In March, the chamber is hosting a community engagement event at the Parklands Tavern. The evening will carry the theme ‘Give your business a sporting chance’ and our members and guests will hear from local sporting powerhouses on the benefits of engaging with the community, and how they can put their business or brand in the spotlight, and tackle new opportunities. The Kawana Chamber Committee is excited to be announcing some new initiatives over the next month, which are aimed at increasing our membership base, and supporting our community. Stay tuned.

STEPS PATHWAYS COLLEGE OPENS NEW EXTENSIONS

POLICE BRIEFS Earlier this month Sunshine Coast police conducted an overnight operation as part of Operation Tango Anaconda, targeting drug driving in Queensland. Between 9pm and 1am on March 3, 726 vehicles were intercepted as police diverted all

northbound motorists off the Bruce Highway near Glass House Mountains. Out of 20 random drug tests, 13 people tested positive with 10 of those also found to have drugs in their possession. Police also recorded three drink drivers.

new extension is now officially open at the STEPS Pathways College in Caloundra. The first-of-its-kind college creates opportunities for young adults with disabilities and autism through its innovative and intensive learning experience, helping them to live independent lives in the community. With an increase in demand for its service, the college now has two new accommodation facilities and a recreational area. STEPS Group Australia managing director and college founder Carmel Crouch says the recreational area, known as Mason’s Place, will provide an allweather sanctuary for the students, while the two accommodation facilities, one named The Mills Family Wing, will extend

the STEPS Pathways College live-in experience to a further 12 students. “Most people will know that STEPS Pathways College is very much a passion project for me, and it has been an honour to be able to see so many of our students finding their path, achieving their independence, and moving into our community,” Ms Crouch says. Current student Caelan Drew says he is pleased other young people with disabilities can join him. “I’m going to be graduating from the college soon and I’m so grateful to have been able to come here,” Caelan says. “I’ve learned so much here; I’ve learned how to be independent. “I’m glad that more students will be able to come here and have the same experience as me; it’s been life-changing.”

otary Club of Caloundra Pacific has been a hive of activity over recent weeks, raising money, recognising locals and keeping the environment clean. An annual trivia night was a success, raising $8400 for Rotary Oceania Medical Aid to Children. ROMAC, as it is known, is a Rotary humanitarian program providing life-giving surgery to children from more than 20 developing countries when urgent medical treatment is not available in their own countries. Club president Evelyn McCorkell says the winning table on the night was its “mother club” Caloundra Rotary Club. Locals Nicholas Pheeney, Mikah Gatward and Matthew Harris were recently awarded with a Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award for their commitment to their professional and craft. “This award is given to people identified by their employers or customers as providing exemplary, professional job performance,” Ms McCorkell says.

USC GIVES BURSARY

record-holding weightlifting champion and mother-of-two is hoping to use her experiences to help others after receiving the University of the Sunshine Coast’s inaugural David Norris Bursary. Bokarina’s Yolandie Weir recently broke three Australian records in the under-49 kilogram category, claiming 73 kilograms in the clean and jerk, 55 kilogram in the snatch and a total lift of 128 kilograms. The 34-year-old single mother, who was hospitalised several times last year for a chronic medical condition, works as a personal trainer locally and as a strength and conditioning coach the Brisbane Lions’ youth academy. As a high-performance student athlete, Ms Weir says she is honoured “beyond words” to receive the bursary, designed to encourage student athletes with academic potential and financial

need to achieve their academic, sporting and career goals. Ms Weir hopes to become an exercise scientist and work towards a PhD, fulfilling her dream to build a gym and research facility on a rural property where people with chronic illnesses can be treated using innovative exercise methods.

CRACKING DOWN ON P-PLATERS He was all swagger behind the steering wheel. Brash and bold, quick to take off at the lights and impatient in the line of traffic. In a hurry. Restless. Pushy. Like so many of his kind, this P-plater needed to be reminded of his position in the pecking order of road users – the requirement to play a part, to be courteous and to make room; that dominating the road will just lead to misery for others and possibly for himself. P-plate drivers need a reality check. The current change.org petition asking to ban them from driving on beaches is long overdue. Too many are reckless on the sandy stretches at Inskip Point, Teewah and Double Island and on Fraser. They have not earned the right yet. There is no need for them to be there. Anyone who has enjoyed those wild, free spaces (as I have) has a P-plater story to tell that always includes a near miss or witnessing some kind of craziness. Taking them off the beaches would be a fresh reset nearly 15 years after the State Government brought in specific young

driver rules. In 2007, a flashpoint was reached. They were then twice as likely to die on the road as those aged over 25. Longer time served in the learning phase was deemed to be needed and logbooks began to be kept, with limits on behaviour and passenger numbers introduced. The clamps on newbies became a new normal. But it’s time to review their liberties again. Let’s not forget that P stands for ‘provisional’. That means temporary, tentative or conditional. As of June last year – the most recent statistics available – there were 173,642 P1 and P2 drivers registered in Queensland. The holders of these licences are in transition. They are learning the ropes and gaining their stripes. Their time will come. But so many don’t act like it. They drive it like they stole it. What other group of drivers marks the death of one of their number by doing burnouts and donuts? At the time of writing, 46 people have died on Queensland roads this year. This time last year we had only lost 25. We are in for a bad road toll year, it would appear. Transport and Main Roads figures show that P-platers were involved in crashes in Queensland that caused 60 deaths in the past year. That is more than involved oldies. Demanding more of them is required: more learning, more checks, more time served. Let’s make the beach ban petition the start of a renewed desire to keep our provisional drivers and those who share the driving spaces with them in one piece. SKY-RAIL NOT LIGHT-RAIL Sunshine Coast Council’s proposal for ground-based light rail from Caloundra to the new Maroochydore Town Centre via Nicklin Way, suggests that two lanes of roadway will have to be sacrificed to accommodate the rail line. This suggestion is preposterous, because the current four lanes are already at peak-hour capacity and two more lanes are required – not two less; especially if the mayor’s desire for high rise apartments and more shops along either side come to fruition. However, an alternative rail system is available that would add to the capacity of the road corridor, in the form of a Sky-rail similar to the one from Brisbane airport to Brunswick Street. The advantages of an elevated railway are: • The line would fit down the centre strip of the road so that no road lanes are lost. • The line would pass over intersections so that road traffic is uninterrupted. • Elevated stations at every suburb would be connected to footpaths on either side via road-overpass walkways. • An elevated railway would allow the route to follow the more touristy scenic

coastal roads, passing the major shopping centres and beaches, rather than along some boring inland route past the hospitals, universities, etc. • The line should go directly from Caloundra to Maroochydore and beyond, and inland destinations such as the hospitals and universities could be connected to the main route via branch lines from suitable coastal stations. In conclusion, it seems pointless to terminate the route at the new town centre, when it makes more sense to continue the line north to Noosa and then west to the main line at Cooroy. The light-rail line could be built on the ground from Landsborough to Caloundra then by sky-rail through the congested suburbs, and then back to the ground for the section to Noosa and beyond. There is also no need for the line to be heavy rail as one politician has suggested, as this line will not be needed for heavy freight, because there is no coal, wheat, sugar or heavy industry along the coastal route. couple of topics that interest me and keep coming up are weather reporting and industrial action/striking. I am becoming more and more frustrated with the way weather is reported. It may not even be the forecaster’s fault; it may be the guidelines they are working under, but it is not right. It seems every report is based on the worse case scenario. Each day when there is any hint of cloud, the forecast sounds like this: mostly fine day, with possible showers in the morning and afternoon with a possible storm in the evening. Now, that has everything covered and must be their go-to forecast if they have no idea what is going to happen. Then there is the coverage when they do know bad weather is on the way: cricket-ballsize hail stones, damaging winds, etc. I think it is a bit like the medical profession when they aren’t really sure what’s wrong with you or when you go in for a procedure and they give you the worst possible prognosis so everyone’s

covered. Like, if you die while you are having an ingrown toenail taken out, everybody’s covered because you ticked the boxes and signed the form. Of course, even more frustrating are the TV weather presenters who are promoted as having the inside knowledge on what the weather is going to do, but that’s a whole other column. Industrial action. I have never been involved in any and never ever would. If I am being underpaid or overworked (in my opinion), I will negotiate with my employer and either leave or settle my differences, not do half a job or no job at all to get my point across. I don’t hold it against those who do, but simply don’t believe in it. Well, that’s not actually true. If it directly impacts me when someone is not doing their job properly because they have a gripe with their employer or their workplace, I probably do hold it against them, as everyone has choices. Being master of my own destiny, I believe you reap what you sow on most occasions, even if it is a storm I didn’t believe was actually coming.

he day I met my Louis 15 years ago, our eyes locked on each other and it was just like in the cartoons where little pink love hearts spring out of your pupils as you look adoringly at the love of your life. For the little shih tzu puppy and I, it was a case of love at first site. We had years when it was just the two of us against the world. Louis made me laugh as I rode with him nestled in my bike basket with the sea breeze in our hair, before we ran along the beach. We slept together and ate dinner together. I have no doubt he was the medicine that mended my broken heart from a bad relationship. Louis was next to me when I went on that first date with the bloke I would later marry and over the years, Lou was there every time we brought home a new baby. The little dog would pad up and down the stairs when I was breastfeeding at 2am or when I was up with a sick child. I even named one child after him. Lou (the dog) slept at my feet every night and we went together like carrots and peas. The years flew by and Louis

started to slow down. I had to say the saddest goodbye to my soulmate after he lost a hard-fought battle with old age last week. And my last memory of my best friend as he went to sleep was our eyes locked, just as they had been 15 years earlier, with love hearts pouring into each other’s pupils. I knew he didn’t want to leave me and I wasn’t ready to leave him. I believe you get one – or if you are really lucky, two – special dogs in your life who are your soulmates. Louis was mine. He met lots of famous people at the radio station where I work and he was next to me wearing a doggie tuxedo when I said my wedding vows. He was even on the cover of this magazine a few times. But it is the simple moments in time I will miss most, such as having a cup of tea late at night when the house is quiet or talking to Mum on the phone. He was there for it all. Always at my feet. That tail wagging and looking up at me as if I was the most amazing human being on earth. Loyal and loving every minute of every day. Rest well my little buddy. I will forever miss my second heartbeat at my feet.

new home at GemLife over 50s resort in Maroochydore has given Sunshine Coasters Alister Lee and Melissa Parkinson-Lee the lifestyle change they craved. What are varicose veins? Varicose veins are swollen, twisted superficial veins that are no longer efficient at returning old blood to your heart. They are common in our society and may be unsightly. They can also cause aches and swelling and, in some cases, lead to skin ulcers, bleeding or blood clots. The likelihood of developing varicose veins increases if your parents suffered with them. Things like pregnancy or having a job where you stand still for long periods can also contribute. Varicose veins rarely get better on their own. Generally, they slowly get worse and as they do so the risk of complications increases. If your veins are already problematic, treating them earlier rather than later may be appropriate. Treatment can be as simple as elevating the legs to relieve ache, or wearing compression stockings, which are okay in Tasmania but can be a chore in the Queensland climate. What is hip preservation surgery? Joint preservation surgery is arguably one of the fastest growing areas of orthopaedics. It uses minimally invasive keyhole operations to repair parts of damaged joints to treat pain and functional loss while at the same time preventing arthritis and joint replacement surgery. Hip preservation surgery treats problems like hip impingement and labral tears, which we know lead to arthritis, and potential early joint replacement. These types of problems can occur due to injury, but more commonly they present as the slow onset of groin pain related to activity. Doctors usually order X-rays that may show bone spurring leading to impingement, and MRIs showing tearing of the lining of the hip or labrum. Hip arthroscopy is a keyhole operation to remove impinging bone and repair the labrum. This is aimed to treat pain, improve function, but arguably and more importantly, protect and preserve the joint. Unfortunately, if treated too late the joint damage may have progressed too far and joint replacement, in time, may be the only surgical option.

Bone grafting Over time, if teeth are missing the jawbone is resorbed (or shrinks). Resorption may eventually make it impossible for you to wear dentures. Bone augmentation procedures may be completed as a preliminary step for placement of dental implants. When resorption is less severe, bone augmentation and dental implant placement can be undertaken together. With advanced technology we now have the ability to grow bone. By growing bone, we are not only able to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to fully restore functionality and appearance of the mouth. HOMEBUILDER’S SUCCESS CAUSING SOME HEADACHES So many homes to build and not enough skilled labour to meet time frames. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

he HomeBuilder scheme has turned into a successful economic boost for Australia, but it has also unearthed some challenges ahead as builds and renovations start. By February 26, 19,496 Queenslanders have lodged applications. A further 485 Queensland First Home Owner’s Grants have been paid out. There is still two weeks until applications close on March 31. Housing Industry Association’s Queensland executive director Michael Roberts says while “the scheme has been successful beyond everyone’s expectations” he doesn’t expect another extension. Grant conditions require construction to start within six months of the build contract being signed. Mr Roberts says there are a number of barriers that will make meeting this requirement difficult in some regions. The volume of applications is causing headaches for the government officers. Another challenge is the delay in receiving the grant funds, which aren’t issued until the build, or slab stage, has commenced. Then there is the residential

construction industry, which is under phenomenal pressure to deliver on the build contracts as materials and labour shortages increase. On top of this, builders are already busy with repairing homes due to severe weather occurrences over the last 18 months. “There is not enough skilled labour to go around,” Mr Roberts says. But on the plus side, he says the

program will deliver work for 12 to 18 months. “That’s good news for the Sunshine Coast,” he adds. As a result of these barriers the HIA is talking to the Federal Government about an extension on the required time for the start of a build. “This will assist in moving this significant amount of work through the next six to 12 months,” Mr Roberts says. A delay in the construction timeframe may be great news for the many young Queenslanders like 25-year-old Brianna Deacon who has signed up for HomeBuilder. She’s been under huge pressure for the last few months. Firstly, she was waiting for confirmation of when her land in Palmview will be registered. She then needed to finalise both the build fixed-price contract and mortgage. “I have had a few freak-out moments in the last few weeks,” she says. Having until March 31 to lodge her HomeBuilder application has been a blessing. Adding another few months on top for construction completion may mean Brianna misses out on Christmas in the new home, but at least her dream of owning her own home is not far away.

he University of Sunshine Coast Basketball Club has secured the signature of Brisbane Bullets forward Tanner Krebs for the 2021 NBL1 North season. Krebs, 25, who is in playoff contention with the Bullets, has a straightforward goal – to win wherever he plays. “Winning is fun and who doesn’t want to have fun,” he says. “Whatever it takes to put the team in the best position to win, I will do that.” Rip City men’s coach Nathan Arousi says it is extremely exciting to welcome Krebs to the Coast. “In addition to an elite skillset on both ends of the floor, Tanner has a high basketball IQ and is a proven winner,” Arousi says. “Arguably his most important asset is his ability to play and excel across a number of positions, allowing us to play him wherever the team needs.” Krebs, who joined the Bullets last July on a two-year deal, says he is looking forward to an opportunity to play against his NBL teammates during the inaugural NBL 1 North season. “It will be a lot of fun and super competitive,” says Krebs. “I know there will be smack talk and some bragging rights at practice.” The Hobart-born sharpshooter returned home last year after four years of US college basketball, where he played for St Mary’s Gaels. Due to Covid-19 the

national championship was cancelled and provided an anti-climactic end to his time in California. Krebs tied for second on the school’s all-time games played list (135) – one game shy of Australian NBA player Matthew Dellavedova. “It was very disappointing to end my college career like that,” Krebs says. “Many of us were leaving so it was our last chance to play together and make a real push to win a national championship. It still hurts to this day, but it was out of our control.” Prior to college, Krebs played for Australia at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships, 2014 FIBA U19 Oceania Championships and the 2013 FIBA Oceania Pacific U18 Championships. Krebs is the first announcement for the men’s team while the women’s team have locked in six spots with WNBL champion Alex Delaney, Jasmine Forcadilla, Meghan Ditchburn, Liisa Ups, Layla Prince and Ashleigh Blake. More announcements are expected in the coming weeks. Arousi says: “Tanner is the first of a number of exciting signings that we believe have the ability to compete for a championship in 2021. There is no ceiling for this group.” USC’s NBL1 season starts with the local derby against Phoenix at USC Stadium in May. The finals will be played in August-September after a 14-round regular season. – Rip City Basketball

Shae Wools-Cobb, 25, will tee off in Thursday’s opening round at Pelican Waters with confidence from the highest finish of his formative professional career. The young Sunshine Coast golfer from Mudjimba, just up the highway from Pelican Waters, finished tied third last Sunday in The Players Series Sydney where he produced one of his hottest rounds as a pro. His seven-under-par 64 to open the tournament was just the reinforcement he needed to show all the work he is putting in with coach Grant Field is paying off. When the COVID-19 pandemic stopped Australian tournament golf in its tracks a year ago, Wools-Cobb hit the practice range when he was restricted to a single four-round tournament in 11 months. He’s also a member at Maroochy River Golf Club but works with Field at Pelican Waters, beside Caloundra, on the same practice range where PGA Tour star Cameron Smith tunes up when in town. “I’m usually known for being a really good putter who has to hole a lot to keep in tournaments,” Wools-Cobb says. “I hit all 18 greens in that 64 and just feel I’ve been hitting the ball a lot more solid since the resumption (of tournaments) in January.” Those who know Wools-Cobb will always tell you he is

a super hard marker on his own game. When he sighs that he’s hit a ball thin but straight it’s often an eight-out-of-10 shot on the eye. He’s chasing the perfection that all golfers do. Wools-Cobb went to Maroochydore State High and plays regular Saturday and Sunday competitions at Pelican Waters so this really is a home game this week. He never capitalised on that head start with a poor 73-78 flop to miss the cut at the same course last year. “I have high hopes this week and I’ve definitely learnt a lot from last year when it felt weird playing a tournament on a course I play all the time,” WoosCobb says. “I’m super-aggressive when I play in a normal Saturday or Sunday comp but shied away from that in the tournament and came unstuck being too conservative.” Where he’d normally fade a big driver down the tough par-4 18th to leave a 7-iron approach, he took 3-wood and left himself a much longer iron for an approach shot. He bogeyed the hole both days. The nines have been flipped this year so the 18th will play as the 9th.“The Queensland Open is where I made my debut as a professional in 2018 so it’s always really special to play it,” the former top amateur says. Well, apart from a few secret spots, the Coast has been quiet on the wave front. This weekend will be much the same. There is a jump in swell but at the time of writing this, it predicted ESE devil wind. Hopefully, that will change, and a nice SW will clean up a good weekend of wave. A plane load of the world’s best surfers is in quarantine ahead of the Newcastle event. Pretty disappointing Bells and Snapper are off, but I think the locals at those areas would be so stoked! Laters.
