From the editor I don’t know about you, but after seeing the entertainment industry close during lockdown, I’m extra appreciative of the great events we can now attend on the Coast. This week, I spoke to the greats of Australian music history, Normie Rowe, Dinah Lee and Jade Hurley. Yes, you must be of a certain age to know who I’m talking about. However, if you do, I’m here to tell you this dynamic trio are rocking out at the Caloundra Events Centre this week. From what I hear, it will be an exceptional evening. Another form of the arts is about to open to the public this month, with the start of the Open Studios Sunshine Coast art trail, on March 20. There’s about 60 participating private studios and some galleries ready to welcome you into their creative space, where you can check out their style and methods and engage with
the artists. The organisers of this event are the people involved in Arts Connect – a group aimed at encouraging, sharing, and learning about the arts. The contribution made by Arts Connect is truly significant especially when you consider the organisers do all of this on a voluntary basis. So, a big thank you from us to you. You will find more details in this week’s feature story. We also have our What’s On pages, showcasing music, workshops, and all sorts of enjoyable, leisure activities. NEWS Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says Pro-invest’s commitment was another vote of confidence in the Maroochydore City Centre and the Sunshine Coast. “Our council is very pleased to see this project come out of the ground, at a time when we are encouraging opportunities to support the recovery of our tourism and hospitality industries,” he says. “This project will provide a significant economic boost to the region with up to 1500 people working on the project during construction. “Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast will be an important part of the Maroochydore CBD precinct and will offer

lobal investment firm Pro-invest Group has started construction on the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast in the heart of the new Maroochydore CBD. Pro-invest Co-CEO Jan Smits says the new nine-storey hotel on First Avenue, Maroochydore will feature 181 rooms, a rooftop swimming pool, bar and dining venue, conference and function facilities, parking and ground-level retail space. The hotel will employ up to 1500 people during the construction phase and 30 full- and part-time staff will be required when the hotel is operational. “We believe Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast is a great addition to Maroochydore, particularly as the region transitions from a largely leisure-based to a more diversified market with major growth in businesses establishing themselves in the city centre to take advantage of the large-scale infrastructure projects currently

underway,” Mr Smits says. “The Holiday Inn Express brand is ideal for the destination as its midscale positioning will make it highly-suitable for targeting business, meetings and leisure travellers,” he says. Pro-invest and IHG Hotels & Resorts have enjoyed a highly successful partnership in Australasia over the last decade, with 11 Holiday Inn Express hotels open or in the pipeline, as well as two voco hotels in Auckland and Brisbane and a Hotel Indigo in Brisbane, all of which will open later this year. “In alignment with our commitment to sustainability, the hotel had been designed to achieve a five-star NABERS rating, making it the first hotel on the Sunshine Coast to achieve this,” Mr Smits says. National construction company Minicon has been engaged to undertake the construction scheduled to finish in May, 2022.
“This project will provide a significant economic boost to the region…” brand-new, quality hotel accommodation in the heart of our region’s new city centre,” Mayor Jamieson says. SunCentral Maroochydore chief executive officer John Knaggs says the development was the fourth major construction project to have commenced within the first stage of the CBD. “There’s multiple tower cranes and hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of investment currently underway within the Maroochydore CBD, it’s a real hive of activity and it is pleasing to see so many tradespeople and suppliers working onsite each day to create a lasting legacy for future generations,” Mr Knaggs says.
GOODBYE GAS: VOLVO TO MAKE ONLY ELECTRIC VEHICLES BY 2030
Volvo says it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. But if you want one, you’ll have to buy it online. The Swedish automaker said last week that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines – including hybrids. “There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” says Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer. Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035. Volvo also said that, while its allelectric vehicles will be sold exclusively online, dealerships will “remain a crucial part of the customer experience and will continue to be responsible for a variety of important services.” As part of last week’s announcement, the Swedish automaker will unveil its second fully electric car. Volvo says its goal is to have half of its global sales to be fully electric cars by 2025, with the remaining half made up of hybrids. Automakers around the world are ramping up production of electric vehicles as charging technology improves and governments impose stricter pollution regulations. – AAP

State of the Art Open Studios provides a rare chance to watch Sunshine Coast artists working in their private studios. WORDS: Gail Forrer.
T
his month you only have to knock on the door of creativity and you will be welcomed inside. The people waiting to beckon you in are a group of Sunshine Coast artists who are leading you into their places of inspiration, the spaces where ideas are birthed, nurtured and moulded into life. In other words, the artist’s studio, the place where a splosh of paint is appreciated and interpreted, a blank canvas is viewed as a challenge, a vision and vessel of potential fortune. Artist’s studios are rarely places where minimalism rules. Rather, they are full of sketches and scribbles, wood and clay, palettes and easels. In some studios the digital world has been embraced and in there, you will find another world of codes and keys, screens and mice. It’s different and it’s surprising and it’s all part of the big picture of art-making. Open Studios president Richard Muldoon is among the Arts Connect (the umbrella group underpinning Open Studios) group members who are responsible for the launch of the 2021 fresh and invigorated Open Studio trail weekends event. Together, this group including open studios co-ordinator Toni

Eggleston examined past events, looked at other successful events – particularly Noosa Open Studios – put it all together and used the rich output to revitalise the popular event. The number of art studios registered proves the latest iteration of Open Studios has met with local art practioners’ approval. “We thought it would be good to get 50 – but we have 60 studios and some galleries taking part,” Mr Muldoon says. “It’s a huge turnout.” The inaugural event was masterminded by Arts Connect, a team of artists who teamed up in 2007 to support artists with opportunities such as shows, workshops and social events. Open Studios was originally designed to complement the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Festival of Walks 2010. Last year, it stretched its artistic wings and in 2021 has re-emerged as Open Studio Sunshine Coast, garnering registrations throughout the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area from hinterland to Coastline. Mr Muldoon is a visual artist and a professional photographer focusing on weddings. He and his family made the move from Brisbane to Maleny some four years ago and keeping his work in mind,
purchased a wedding chapel and a backyard with a massive shed in it. “We’ve made the shed into a creative hub,” he says. Mr Muldoon says the Open Studios event meets all the goals of Arts Connect. “We have about 120 members, he explains. “It’s a not-for-profit group. We get a modest benefit from the $50 registration. With that, and other assistance, we can help artists attain an income, exposure and educational opportunities. We hold workshops and the annual Sculpture on the Edge at Maleny.” Mr Muldoon praised the involvement and contributions from Sunshine Coast Regional Council. “They’re amazing,” he says “Council has a forward thinking, positive attitude to the arts. “They foster the arts – between their grants and RADF we are able to launch this program.” “But, the idea is to stand on our own feet in the next two years.” Mr Muldoon says the $400,000 worth of art sold in the last Noosa Open Studios has benchmarked the sales figure. “It’s sensational – I hope we can do as
well,” he says. Mr Muldoon acknowledges it’s a big job to put this together, but recognition for hard work should go to Open Studios co-ordinator Toni Eggleston. “She’s the one who gets it all done.” Ms Eggleston says that apart from meeting the artists, is the discovery of the artist’s studio. “They can be anything from a backyard shed to a converted shipping container, warehouse, gallery studio or garden retreat. “It’s wonderful to get an insight into so many of our local artists’ lives and see the huge range of creativity that brings art to life.” Between the coast and hinterland, Arts Connect has 5000 trail guides to roll out, so there will be plenty of available information. Workshops Enter this studio and prepare to be enveloped in a big burst of colour and happiness – Teresa Mundt style. Ms Mundt paints the things we do in our daily life and imbues them with bright layers of feelings we experience when we do the things that bring us joy. Oh, I know that feeling, you might say to yourself as you wind through the whimsical and quirky scenes in this studio. Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and it’s due to this form of communication that Ms Mundt’s work has joined the art trail. “A friend suggested to me that I might like to register for the Open Studios event,” she says. “It was a change for me, I have opened my studio before, but I have always done things off my own bat.” In registering for Open Studios, Ms Mundt says there have been rewards and she is pleased to connect with a network of artists and opportunities. She says early her career background has clearly influenced her work. “I began as a freelance cartoonist,” she says. “My work is not representational, rather a fusion of caricature and bold colour. My work explores the themes of joy, contentment, humour and life’s simple pleasure.” Ms Mundt will be painting in the middle of her studio, surrounded by her completed works.

Take some time, have a look, and boggle your mind with the dynamics of a drawing machine or the risographic rhythms of printmaking. The artwork of ManXMachine, as the name illustrates, originates from the combination of machine/computer/digital and human abilities he utilises to create art. This is the first Open Studio event where ManXmachine – the alter ego of web developer and creative agency owner Wayne McFetridge – will exhibit his generative art and simultaneously operate his machines. ManXmachine describes the drawing machine as big easels with motors that move pens around the place. “But while it’s robotic and controlled by computers – it has its own weird idiosyncrasies,” he says. These unique idiosyncrasies are what ManXMachine seeks to see, sense, and amplify. ManXMachine explains his artistic concepts as emanating from having written code for years. “I can control the nuances of his code as much as others control a brush or a pen yet still leave room for serendipitous occurrences from time to time.”
Wolfgang Engel and his Partner Tina Cooper have opened the Red Door Studio and Tina Cooper Glass gallery at an amazing, fully landscaped block of land in Montville, overlooking Lake Baroon. Sunshine Coast teenager Jessica Lane will shave her long locks off for charity on March 12. Having felt the impacts of cancer close to home, the 18-year-old will shave her 21 inches of auburn hair for the World’s Great Shave. “It is a very heartfelt subject for me. Entries are open for the 16th Sunshine Coast Art Prize with a prize pool of more than $30,000. “Once again Sunshine Coast Council is casting its net both locally and nationwide, encouraging entries from Australia’s best contemporary artists,” councillor Rick Baberowski says. “The prize is acquisitive, with the winning artwork adding to our increasingly impressive Sunshine Coast Art Collection. The $186,000 Family Room, which was once a storeroom, is located just steps from the Paediatric Critical Care Unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the project has been two years in the making. “This room was inspired by a little boy named Hugo, who sadly passed away last year. Hugo had a very long stay in PCCU and his parents did not have the option of being able to stay near him. LIONS LAND AT THE AIRPORT The District Lions Club of 201Q4 has placed a fundraising lion at Sunshine Coast Airport. District governor Dave Watts and public relations officer Tim Fraser met with the airport’s Ayllie White to welcome the new donation lion. “We are asking members of the community to support us,” Mr Fraser says. “Our global causes are diabetes, childhood cancer, environment, hunger, vision and kindness as well as disaster and emergency support and youth programs. Your donation will go towards childhood cancer and the many programs we support.” Lions began 103 years ago in Chicago and in 2022 will celebrate 75 years in Australia.
SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium has marked the recent World Wildlife Day with the release of an unusual hybrid sea turtle at Mon Repos Turtle Centre. The turtle has the carapace colour and head of a loggerhead turtle but the underside of a flatback turtle. He arrived at the aquarium in February 2020 as part of a research study in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Science. “I have loved working with Iluka and watching him grow and develop over the past 12 months,” SEA LIFE veterinary nurse Brittaney Attwood (pictured) says.

NEW MODEL KEEPS MORE PEOPLE OUT OF HOSPITAL A new program seeks to add to GP’s skills to deal with future demand on public health services
A
new model of healthcare is being shaped by an unheralded Sunshine Coast pilot program aimed at reducing wait times and keeping more people out of hospitals. The initiative, trialled over three years, is set to be expanded and could help the region cope with the demands of a surging population. The GP with a Special Interest (GPSI) program, based at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), sees GPs develop their skills and knowledge by working with hospital specialists a few days a week. The experience gained can be used to great effect when they go back to their practices, while their “extra pairs of hands’’ help improve the flow in outpatient clinics at the hospital. The initiative has been a quiet achiever to date, but its successful outcomes will be revealed by program leader, Dr Edwin Kruys, at the 2021 Sunshine Coast Health Symposium on March 18. The inaugural symposium, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI) in partnership with TAFE Queensland, is an online, virtual event that will showcase innovation, diversity and excellence in health. Dr Kruys told sunshinecoastnews.com.au that the GPSI program brought hospital teams and general practitioners (GPs) closer together. He said the model was first introduced in the UK more than 20 years ago and began as a pilot on the Sunshine Coast in 2017.
Dr Kruys said it was widely expected new models of care would be required in the future to meet population needs and manage increasing demand on public health services. He said the Coast program had 19 GPs working across a number of specialties, including dermatology, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynaecology, immunology, mental health, orthopaedics, respiratory, neurology, rheumatology, urology, and vascular surgery. He said he and colleague, Dr Michelle Johnston, were both working as GPs at the hospital General Practice Liaison Unit and their unit had been managing the project with support from management, consultants, nurses and administration staff. Dr Edwin Kruys “In 2000, the National Health Service Plan defined the GPSI role as GPs who continued with their core role in the community, but with additional skills and knowledge in particular clinical areas,’’ Dr Kruys said. “GPSIs would take referrals from other GPs and work within integrated consultant-led hospital teams in addition to hospital specialists, but not replacing them,’’ he said. Funding for the Coast program came from the Queensland Government’s Specialist Outpatient Strategy – Improving the Patient Journey, which allocated $30 million over three years to explore service delivery models.

As the Queensland Ambassador for epilepsy, Whatcha Brewing Specialty Coffee Co cafe owner Harrison Hedges is using his business space at the Big Top Shopping Centre Maroochydore to raise funds and awareness in support of the 280 Australians diagnosed with epilepsy every week, with the Latte Art Smackdown event. Each March, the world turns purple in support of the 50 million people living with epilepsy. Make March Purple is an Australia-wide campaign supported by epilepsy organisations across the country and the peak body, Epilepsy Australia. Mr Harrison lives with autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy. For this event he is partnering with Epilepsy Queensland’s Purple Day and encouraging baristas of all skills and abilities to perform their best drawing skills, on a canvas of frothy foam. The Smackdown will be taking 12 contestants with and without disabilities to see who can create the best latte art. Experts say the hallmarks of professional latte art are pattern definition and symmetry, good contrast and glossy sheen without visible bubbles. Latte art judges barista champion Tilly Sproule and Epilepsy Queensland CEO Chris Dougherty will also be checking out the art’s pattern,
consistency and pour. The first place prize will win a Tim Adams Speciality Coffee masterclass valued at $250. Mr Hedge’s goal is to raise $3000 from the event, as well as committing to donate $1 from every coffee sold on the following day.

Yet, before that, he claimed the title of Australia’s first King of Pop with hits including Shakin’ All Over, Ohh La and It Ain’t Necessarily So. These were the songs that sent young girls into a frenzy and were his first steps to national fame. Later on, his talent saw him tour with the likes of Gene Pitney and Roy Orbison. In 2021, he’s in fine health (going to the gym three times a week) and is enjoying using his skills in the show. He’s upbeat and absolutely ready to rock ‘n’ roll. t kicks off with Shakin’ all Over and the Boomers take it from there. Normie Rowe, Dinah Lee and Jade Hurley are working their magic on audiences nostalgic for their heydays and they are loving it as much as their fans, who are turning out in droves to shake, rattle and roll. All three performers are Australian musical royalty. They hark back to the days of Bandstand; The Johnny O’Keefe shows and that fabulous dance – The Stomp. They were there on the stage when young girls and long-haired boys put on their mini-skirts and bellbottoms and for the first time in history went out to rock ‘n’ roll. The ’50s were done and, in Australia, these were the people who set the 1960s on fire. Australia’s King of Country Rock piano player 77-year-old Jade Hurley exudes the same lightning energy he ever did and he’s upbeat and animated when he talks about the day that changed his life. “I was 14 years old and drinking schooners of beer at a pub, I was drunk as a skunk, of course we were underage, and there was a talent quest at the pub and my mates – all the bodgees and widgees, entered my name up there for a joke. “When they called out John [real name], I got up there and did Jerry Lee Lewis’ Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On. I was rocking on, kicking the keys, and jumping all over the piano and I won the competition. “Johnny O’Keefe had just finished a concert at Wollongong and happened to drop into the pub on his ways home and he asked me onto his show.” The rest is history; from The Johnny
O’Keefe Show Sing, Sing, Sing and Bandstand to the marvellous Mike Walsh Show, Jade Hurley is still entertaining and shakin’ all over in anticipation of the March 13 show at the Caloundra Events Centre stage. New Zealand singer Dinah Lee, is just a couple of months younger than Mr Hurley and like him, she had a pedigree music history. After leaving New Zealand and making it in Australia, she went on to find success in America, performing in the television show Shindig. Today, people with a certain style are called hipsters – back in the day – the cool people were called ‘mods’ and with her

perfectly coiffed pagegirl haircut, blinking long-lashed eyes and dresses of a certain length – Ms Lee was the quintessential mod. Ms Lee loves being part of the show, she has known Mr Rowe and Mr Hurley for the bigger part of her life and is having a ball doing the songs she is known and loved for including her number one hits Don’t You Know Yockomo, Reet Petite and Do the Blue Beat. Normie Rowe, at 74 years old, is the little brother and these days, he doesn’t mind being called that. In a creative capacity, he’s used the stage for all sorts of performances from rock ‘n’ roll theatre. and still sees his 600 performances as

same time, he’s only too happy to acknowledge the good luck in his life. “If you are born in Australia, you have won the lottery,” he says. And as long as health permits, he says he will keep performing. A FLIGHT TO LIFE A Sunshine Coast police officer has finally met the team who helped save her life two years ago. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
T
wo years after a motorcycle accident left a Nambour-based police officer and mother-of-two with a life-threatening brain injury, she has finally met the helicopter team who helped save her life. Ellie Jupp was riding home from a shift on January 24, 2019 when a four-wheel drive pulled out in front of her at a Maroochydore intersection. “Fortunately, I don’t remember it. I never ever want to remember it,” Ms Jupp says. “[Queensland Ambulance Service] took me to Sunshine Coast University Hospital. I was there for a few hours and it was not going well. “Then LifeFlight came in and gave me a lift down to Royal Brisbane Hospital.” Although she has no recollection of the 20-minute flight, Ms Jupp now knows without the RACQ LifeFlight chopper, the outcome may have been very different. “My situation was so critical that to get me to Royal Brisbane any other way would not have been a viable, healthy option,” she says. “It has probably saved a lot more damage and it got me the help that I needed quickly.” She spent two days in a coma and eight
Nambour-based police officer Ellie Jupp feels she owes her life to the LifeFlight crew days in the intensive care unit undergoing treatment for two brain bleeds, nerve damage, collapsed lungs and broken bones, before her long recovery began. “For a brain injury, the initial healing period is two years. It sounded like a long time to me at the time, but in brain injury terms it is only just the beginning.” Chronic neuro fatigue has made day-to-day life very difficult for Ms Jupp as her recovery continues. “I am tired a lot more than I have ever been before.
“The brain injuries will never heal. The brain will just build new pathways around it and that takes a lot of energy. “It’s a bit of an ongoing journey but I am happy to be alive.” It was a joyous but emotional moment as Ms Jupp recently met with Sunshine Coast LifeFlight pilot Andrew Caton, who was on duty that fateful day. Mr Caton says he and his team, including an aircrewman, doctor and paramedic, had just begun their shift when
they were called to SCUH to transport Ms Jupp from hospital to hospital. “That rooftop-to-rooftop flight is very important because it shortens that period of time the patient is actually away from the hospital care,” he says. Mr Caton has been at the LifeFlight base for 12 years and says some jobs remain with him forever. “There are certain jobs that happen every year that most of us do hold onto where you do feel like you are actually making a significant difference to that patient.” Ms Jupp will be the feature patient at this year’s Sunshine Coast LifeFlight gala dinner on March 27. “I went to the LifeFlight gala dinner quite a number of years ago, but I never ever thought I would be a patient. “I’m from a family of pilots. There has always been an appreciation for aviation in our family; it’s just more so than ever now.” Each RACQ LifeFlight callout is estimated to cost $25,000 and come at no cost to the patient. In 2020 Sunshine Coast crews completed 502 critical missions worth more than $12.5 million.

oosa actor Jo Hendrie has had a long wait to play the iconic character of Donna Sheridan in one of the world’s bestloved musicals, Mamma Mia! Scheduled for April last year at Noosa Arts Theatre, she had been in rehearsals for months when COVID hit and the production was postponed for a year. Now, with the production finally set to open on March 26, she is bursting with excitement. “This is the first time there has been a production of Mamma Mia! on the Sunshine Coast,” she says. “The moment the rights were available to community theatre groups, we pounced on it. We all need a good old laugh. It’s not a heavy musical; it’s light and joyful. It’s heartwarming and all the complexities of human relationships are there. There will be tears, but there will be dancing and laughter. It’s really life affirming.” Since moving to the Sunshine Coast 20 years ago, Mrs Hendrie has taught acting, speech, singing and musical

devastated. And in the months that followed 9/11, Mamma Mia! opened on Broadway and Meryl Streep took her 10-year-old daughter to see it, just to make her happy. To see her daughter laughing and singing made her so happy she wrote to the director and producer and thanked them for bringing joy back in the world. When she was asked to play the role of Donna in the film version, it was a no-brainer.” While the film differs from the stage production, audiences will still recognise the same story arc, characters and music – the timeless hits of ABBA. “My favourite ABBA song is not actually in the stage play,” Mrs Hendrie says. “It’s Fernando. I remember it was on the top of the charts week after week when I was a little girl. I’m a bit of a softy at heart. Those beautiful ballads get me every time. Chiquitita runs a close second. We have a beautiful moment in the show where Donna is going out of her mind because her past has caught up with
theatre at schools and performing arts academies, as well as privately from her home studio. An actor who is trained in classical ballet, singing and speech, she has served for several years on the board of Noosa Long Weekend (now NOOSA alive!) Festival and on the management committee of Noosa Arts Theatre. More than 60 million people around the world have fallen in love with what many consider to be the ultimate feelgood musical. Set on a Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs and the audience will be encouraged to dress up and join in the singing and dancing. “This show is an act of service to the community we love at a really strange time in history, where the human beauty of this story matters. We need the compassion, the beauty and the joy of this story. People need it now more than ever. “I was listening to an interview where Meryl Streep was saying after 9/11 in 2001 the whole world was just rocked, just
her and her two best friends sing Chiquitita while trying to cheer her up. Everyone will remember a time when their world was falling apart and friends came to the rescue.” When Noosa Arts Theatre had to postpone the production last year, 60 per cent of ticket holders, when asked if they wanted a refund, said no. They’ve held onto their tickets for a year and now the 17-show season is sold out, but it may be extended if there is enough demand. “The joy of community theatre is the beautiful collaboration,” Mrs Hendrie says. “It’s a collective harvest at the end, then we get to share it with the audience and it snowballs into something bigger and it becomes mutually enjoyable. “There’s so many things in this life we can’t control, so to have a project you know is going to bring joy and healing and will bring a smile and warm the heart of everyone who sees it, it just feels like a privilege. It’s all about bringing joy to a hurting world.”

I frequently find myself rolling my eyes when words like ‘predate’ (which seems to have gained some currency of late), and ‘evolute’ are used as verbs, but hesitated to write about this for fear of being labelled a pedantic old fuddy-duddy! However, the first question in the quiz in issue 643 of the MWP tipped the balance, as it asked when the Queen was ‘coronated’. These are all examples of back formation of a verb from a noun (predation, evolution, coronation), but are unnecessary since perfectly adequate verbs already exist (prey, evolve, crown). Just to confuse things there is, in fact, a verb ‘predate’, but it simply refers to something occurring prior to something else, as in ‘the current monarch’s reign was predated by that of her father’.
You can only expect the public carpark located at the top end of Omrah Ave, Caloundra, directly across from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council Chambers (Caloundra) will no longer be designated as ‘all day parking’ once the council moves to Maroochydore. This carpark is not accessable to ratepayers after 9am because it is full of council and local business staff parking free for the entire day as we little ratepayers must either find a restricted time use carpark or a council metered street parking bay. It will be interesting and predictable to hear the council’s spin when they seize the opportunity to actually charge or regulate this carpark once the council chambers go to Maroochydore.
I cannot help but wonder if we as a nation choose to be ruled by politicians who make us feel uncomfortable by refusing to confront difficult problems, then are we as bad as they are? Do we really listen to what they say, and think about the veracity of what they say? Have they delivered on promises, especially election promises? The saying goes that we get the government we deserve. Considering the revelations about the toxic culture in Parliament House, the blatant misuse of grant funds and jobs for mates by the people elected to serve us, have we really sunk that low as a nation?

I support Linda Graham’s letter (MWP 4/3) re protecting our lifestyle, questioning the council’s proposal to introduce light rail along a 13-kilometre corridor from Maroochydore to SCUH, Birtinya and changing of building codes. Judging by the hundreds of people who protested along Alexandra Headland beach on Saturday March 6, many waving placards, saying ‘No light Rail’ and ‘No High Rise’ or ‘Don’t Turn us into another Gold Coast’, there is great concern about the council’s push for a light rail which (likes buses) will possibly, travel empty much of the time and Council’s ever-changing building regulations which (now) allows homes to be built on blocks of just over 200m2 (Aura). s far as lucky numbers go, it seems 13 is the winner for Mooloolaba’s Wendy Barnes as she prepares to fulfil a dream met with its fair share of battles. Fearing breast cancer would rob her of life and the chance to compete in the Mooloolaba Triathlon, the 55-year-old is now ready to chase her own personal victory.
A seasoned triathlete, Mrs Barnes moved to the Coast from Adelaide 13 years ago with her husband Trevor and three children Hayley, Tayla and Riley, before receiving a devastating diagnosis. “We arrived in the January and I started training,” she says. “In the June I got diagnosed with breast cancer. We were really gobsmacked.” She underwent a lumpectomy, 12
rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and had all 24 lymph nodes removed from her left arm. “I treated all of my chemo like a triathlon,” Mrs Barnes says. “I thought right, that’s one leg down, I’ve done that swim leg and now I’ve got the bike leg.” After treatment, Mrs Barnes began participating in charity triathlons, raising money for cancer. “In 2011 I did the breast cancer tri with my two daughters and a girlfriend; I did the bike leg. “Then in 2012 I did the whole tri and so did my daughters.” That same year she raised $10,000 taking part in the Rio Tinto Ride for Breast Cancer Research, a 260-kilometre return trip from Brisbane to Wivenhoe. Then, at a five-year check-up in 2013, Mrs Barnes received the news no one wanted to hear. “I got diagnosed again. That was really hard. I went straight in and I had a double mastectomy and had to have chemo again. It was very hard going through that the second time; you know what to expect.” Fearing she would lose her battle, Mrs Barnes wrote a letter to each of her children, something she says was a very traumatic experience. Nearly eight years on and with a newfound passion for life, she began training for the 2021 Mooloolaba Triathlon in December last year. “For 13 years it’s always been in the back of my head that I’d always wanted to
do [the Mooloolaba Triathlon]. Now I’ve got my third chance at life so I’m living it.” Mrs Barnes is part of the Mooloolaba Beach Bums swim club and says swimming has become her “saviour” physically and mentally post-cancer. She runs to and from swim training, but admits the high impact is difficult on her joints after chemotherapy. She says she also has a very special connection to her bike. “When I turned 39, I decided to do a triathlon. It was at Port Pirie and I actually won that one. Mum and Dad helped me pay half for my beautiful bike, which I’ve got my name on and it says, ‘love Mum and Dad’, which is very special because my dad recently passed away.” This time round, Mrs Barnes’s 21-yearold son Riley will also take part in the triathlon to support his mother. With the event on March 13, 13 years after moving to Queensland where she lives at number 13 of her Mooloolaba street, 13 years since her first cancer diagnosis and being diagnosed for a second time in 2013, Mrs Barnes is hoping lucky number 13 has finally aligned so she can fulfil her dream. She admits the 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre cycle and five-kilometre run event will be her last. “People are telling me I’ll have to come 13th but I just want to finish it. I’ll keep up with my swimming and cycling but this is the last triathlon. “As I have always said, what the mind believes the body achieves.”

The characters, Harold, Lisa, Cheese and Jam, work together to overcome obstacles on their way to the island. Kashyap drew inspiration for the book’s setting from his hilltop home and other nearby destinations. “Their treehouse is on the big hill so that’s where I got the idea from, so the treehouse is like my house,” he says. “The beach is meant to be where they set sail to Happy Island and the island is meant to be Fraser Island.” An enthusiastic reader himself, he says the characters’ unique names have a simple but creative meaning. “Cheese because he’s super cheesy and Jam because I was eating some jam and thought that’s a good name,” he says. His book comes to life thanks to the illustrations of 12-year-old Indy Stapleton. “It’s meant to be the explorer’s ‘diary’, so I wanted it to look like someone had hand drawn or sketched them,” says Kashyap, who hopes to continue writing as a passion but has his sights set on pursuing a career in medicine. Sunshine Coast-based charity Cycling Without Age is looking to expand its services across the region and calling for more volunteers. eonie Barnes and Jill Ladewig of Coolum’s Red Cross were recently recognised for a decade of dedication to their community with a long-service medal. Ms Barnes is a third-generation Red Cross member and current president of the Coolum branch. “My grandmother,
my mother and I have a total of more than 100 years of service to the Red Cross between us,” she says. Ms Barnes is the deputy liaison officer for the Red Cross Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Committee and in her 10 years has worked extensively with international groups in countries
organising and running hoy and bingo events. Red Cross has been a part of the Coolum community since 1985 and in that time has raised funds through sausage sizzles, raffles, cake bake stalls and fashion parades. The next fundraiser is taking place on March 13 and 20 with a raffle at Woolworths in Coolum. The club meets regularly for coffee at Coolum Beach Surf Life Saving Club. PRO-INVEST PROJECT Global investment firm Pro-invest Group has started construction on the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast in the heart of the new Maroochydore CBD. Pro-invest Co-CEO Jan Smits says the new nine-storey hotel on First Avenue, Maroochydore will feature 181 rooms, a roof-top swimming pool, bar and dining venue, conference and function facilities, parking and ground-level retail space. The hotel will employ up to 1500 people during the construction phase and 30 full- and part-time staff when the hotel is operational. “We believe Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast is a great addition to Maroochydore, particularly as the region transitions from a largely leisure-based to a more diversified market with major growth in businesses establishing themselves in the city centre to take advantage of the large-scale infrastructure projects currently underway,” Mr Smits says. SunCentral Maroochydore chief executive officer John Knaggs says the development is the fourth major construction project to commence within the first stage of the Maroochydore CBD.

The Australian Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians tournament is coming to the Sunshine Coast this May

aroochydore Rotary Club is hosting the 43rd annual Australian Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians tournament this May. Tournament director Jeanne Motteram says the event is held on a
seven-year rotation between the Australian states and territories, raising significant funds for projects and fostering relationships between Rotarians across the country. “The Rotary Club organising the tournament is awarded the privilege of
donating a large amount of the proceeds to the charity of their choice,” Ms Motteram says. “The Rotary Club of Maroochydore has chosen Wishlist as its major beneficiary. “This charity is an enormous support to Sunshine Coast hospitals, their patients, families and medicos providing funds for research, medical equipment and specialised support services.” Ms Motteram says there will be several activities during the week. “The extensive golf program includes competitions for a variety of daily prizes and perpetual trophies, uniquely named after past Rotary presidents. “There will also be some other contests and games included for fun such as longest drive, closest to the pin and hole in one. “The fellowship also extends to those who do not play golf with a series of tours and visits to local places of interest.” Ms Motteram says some competitors have been part of the annual AFRF for more than 20 years. The tournament will take place at Maroochy River Golf Club from May 16 to 22 and is sponsored by Coastline BMW. It is open to all past and present Rotarians and their partners. F
rom tea that changes colour to refreshing blends perfect for a Sunshine Coast climate, a Caloundra woman has been busy brewing her business venture and sharing her love of tea to others. A botanist by trade, Monica Naples recently rebranded her business to ARTEA The Tea Merchant, after launching in 2018.
Now she offers her award-winning, organic and Fairtrade tea blends from her tea bar. Ms Naples says experimenting with tea is an outlet for her creativity and she hopes to teach visitors a cup of tea is more than a tea bag soaked in boiling water. As a tea drinker herself, Ms Naples always struggled to find a good cup of tea when she was out, so decided to complete

a course with the Australian Tea Masters in Victoria. “I found it was a bit of a niche market, so I started tea blending,” she says. “My tea bar is an expression of tea in its various forms and creating something that’s a little bit different for tea drinkers. “I like to showcase its versatility.” Ms Naples uses only certified organic ingredients to create her small-batch blends. “I like to use a lot of colours and florals with my tea. The colour and the smell is the first thing you experience. “It’s about educating the public on what tea actually is and the variety that is out there. “I make small-batch tea, which enhances quality and differs from what might be sitting on a supermarket shelf for months.” Ms Naples says tea is similar to wine or coffee and many factors can influence its flavour. Her most popular ARTEA blend is hibiscus mint, a refreshing and colourful herbal tea. “I make that as an iced tea and the ingredients are very cooling and thirst quenching. “I also have a tea, blue lavender, that changes colour. It’s blue when you brew it up and if you add lemon or lime it changes to a beautiful purple.” When it comes to brewing the best cup of tea, Ms Naples shares some tips with My Weekly Preview. “For example, with green tea, a lot of people don’t know you shouldn’t put

boiling water in because it makes it bitter.” She suggests heating water to 85 degrees or switching off the kettle just before it starts to boil. And, when it comes to the debate of milk first or last, Ms Naples says a good black tea should have no need for milk or sweeteners at all. “If you have good tea you don’t need to add anything to it. “People might add milk because it is too strong or bitter and that’s because it is not a good-quality tea. “With my blends, they can be drunk with or without milk, but I always recommend not. “If you want to have a milky tea, there are certain teas that work well, and I explain those to people.” ARTEA has won several awards, with two tea blends winning silver medals at the National Golden Leaf Awards in Melbourne in 2018 and nine medals across several tea categories, including tea cocktails, in 2019. Ms Naples also sells wholesale to cafes, restaurants and stores and makes tea-infused cakes to sell in her tea bar. First National Parklands owners Marcia and Chris Smith have purchased and filled a beach trolley full of sweet prizes for the lucky winner, choosing The Smith Family charity as the beneficiary. “We chose The Smith Family charity as we wanted to do something for underprivileged kids and with Easter coming up we thought it would be a great opportunity to try and raise some funds for them,” Mrs Smith says. “We came up with the idea of buying a beach
trolley and filling it with Easter goodies. “The trolley has something for everyone. There is a large soft toy bunny, Easter eggs for kids, yummy chocolates for Mum and Dad, a six-pack of beer and some wine.” The Smiths are covering the cost of the prizes, worth $220, and the raffle tickets will be sold for $2 each, three for $5 or 10 for $15. Tickets are available from the First National Parklands office in the Parklands Market Place shopping centre on Parklands Boulevard, Meridan Plains with the winner to be drawn on March 30 at 10am. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: CALOUNDRA COUPLE CELEBRATES 60 YEARS John and Joan Newson reflect on their adventures together. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Joan and John Newson received a card from the Queen in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary
Caloundra couple is celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss and looking back on the many adventures of their lives so far. John and Joan Newson met on the beach at Waiheke Island in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour aged 22 and 17, respectively. “Our first outing was a dinner date at The White Lady street pie cart in Auckland city,” Mrs Newson says. “We had pies, peas and puds [pudding]. Very romantic! “The funny part is that we still love them.” The pair dated for 18 months before a 12-month engagement and marriage at St Aidan’s Church in Auckland on March 4, 1961. Mrs Newson says farm life soon called their names, and they raised their daughters Joanne and Vicki in the small New Zealand village of Tinopai. “A wonderful move we made was purchasing a farmlet and living there with our young daughters for 14 years,” she says.“That life in the country was a fantastic learning curve. “We all had to work hard for very little money, but the quality of life was gigantic. We loved our horses and our animals; everything about it in fact.” The Newsons crossed the ditch for a holiday to Caloundra in 1985 before returning to the region. “We absolutely fell in love with it,” Mr Newson says. “We stayed at the Joanne Apartments and the gorgeous view blew us away. We returned to Australia a short time later and purchased an e rental an
John and Joan Newson on their wedding day on March 4, 1961 and worked our way around Australia for a year. “We loved it all; what an experience.” The Newsons were forced back to New Zealand for a family matter before making the permanent move in 1997. “We bought a home in Caloundra and applied for citizenship of our new homeland immediately. “Everyone thought we were crazy with the moves we made, but I always loved trying new mad things.” As well as their two daughters, who also live in Caloundra, the couple has four grandchildren and two greatgranddaughters and had the privilege of fostering children over the years. When it comes to being married for 60 years, Mrs Newson says a good partnership is about always adjusting. “Our marriage has been 60 years of everything life throws at you. “Heaps of fun times, many trials and of course constant adjustments to each other. “To be honest e are still adjusting ”

LIONS CLUBS CELEBRATE AWARENESS DAY

ocal Lions clubs have been busy recently celebrating Lions Awareness Day on March 6. Lions Club of Lake Currimundi and Kawana president Norm Jensen says the day was an opportunity for club members to introduce themselves to the community and show they are more than just a humble sausage sizzle. “Lions clubs on the Sunshine Coast are part of a service organisation with more than 1.4 million members in more than 220 countries and locations around the world,” Mr Jensen says. “The club raises funds through regular Bunnings barbecues at Kawana. “We also and participate in a range of other community events and fundraising activities. “A key fact about Lions clubs is that every dollar we raise from the public goes directly to the people and organisations or projects we support. “Not one cent goes to administration costs, which are met by Lions members for less than the cost of a cup of coffee each week.” The local club also conducts an annual Children of Courage award ceremony and recently announced its

uota Club of Caloundra has been a local connection to the community for the past 10 years and is hoping to continue supporting several local programs with the generosity of residents. “Quota Club Caloundra fundraise to support programs, which enhance disadvantaged women, children and the hearing and speech impaired in our community,” the club’s Juliet Anderson says. “Programs which we contribute to are STEMM programs, women’s refuge, rural aids, Hear and Say and Currimundi Special School to name a few. “We would love to be able to share our vision with the larger community – by doing this, it enables people to assist in the support of the various charities Quota Club Caloundra supports.” The club has a range of activities planned for the year including a fashion event, trivia night and cocktail evening. MY OPINION what else don’t we know? Those ingredient panels, written in a font and size for ants to read, require a science degree to interpret. The messages have been so confusing, we have lost the ability to know what is good for us and processed food and its flashy packaging is expert at sucking us in. For example, we had decades of believing a cereal box that blared it was full of energy. We presumed that was a good thing and shovelled it in until we realised it was the equivalent of mainlining sugar. And by the time we realised we had fallen for advertising lies, too many Australians were hooked on the sweet stuff.

POOR OLD ORANGE JUICE It has been dethroned, cast down from its five-star health rating to – at best – a measly three-and-a-half and at worst, two. And sitting beside it is (gasp) Diet Coke and Pepsi Max. How could such a natural, wonderful liquid treat drop like a stone from the heavens, being grouped with drinks that are nutritionally negligible? OJ got KO-ed because like so many packaged, processed foods, even its 100 per cent version is a distant relative of the original whole, packaged-in-a-skin orb from whence it came.
Can you imagine eating four oranges back to back? Then you probably shouldn’t be quaffing a juice made from putting the clamps on a handful of oranges, what with the fibre being removed and the sugars being distilled and all. Even dieticians agree we would be better off with a whole orange and a glass of water rather than a whole glass of the juice. OJ’s descent was revealed in the overhaul of Australia and New Zealand’s health star rating system for processed and packaged food and drinks, which was unveiled this month. The system is designed to help people make healthier choices at the supermarket and the more stars a product gets, the healthier it is deemed to be. It considers natural and added sugar, protein, fibre, fat and all the other food elements. And in the wash-up, sweet ol’ OJ did not come up looking too peachy. It is all so confusing, isn’t it? The star system is meant to be easy, but if orange juice and Diet Coke get the same rating,

The creep has been on for decades: alarm was raised about targeting children with junk food ads 20 years ago. The average Aussie woman was a size 12 then. Now she is a size 14. Blokes’ waists now are bigger than their shoulders used to be. We are a nation of obese people and are so inept at helping ourselves, the government has to give us a helping hand, lest the nation’s healthcare bill blow out in the same way our waistlines have. And while it seems OTT to suggest OJ might not be a healthy choice for every day, it is another layer of information. We need all the help we can get.

PM FOCUSES ON INDUSTRY OVER BIODIVERSITY Prime Minister Scott Morrison has talked up the importance of protecting heavy industry, days after another 12 Australian animals were declared extinct. “Biodiversity is essential for life on this planet,” Mr Morrison told reporters in the NSW Hunter region. “And our policies are designed to try and support that biodiversity … but do so in a way that protects and supports the very heavy industries that we’ve had in our regions for a long time.” A recent independent review found the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act was not fit for purpose, while warning Australia’s environment is on an unsustainable trajectory. Another 12 Australian animals were declared extinct under those laws last week, taking the total to 34. Mr Morrison is trying to change the protection laws so a “public interest” exemption can be used to circumvent environmental standards, paving the way for economic interests to win out. Natural Historian Sir David Attenborough has recently focused his attention to climate change and the importance of sustainability, to ensure the planet and biodiversity is not further damaged. The prime minister explained them as two separate problems. “As serious as issues around climate change and these things are … at the end of the day, what actually supports the planet is ensuring that we maintain and support biodiversity,” he says. “That is his fundamental point. FAREWELL TO A GOOD DOG

y Facebook friends would have a fair idea what I would be writing about this week – my little dog Barklay passing away. Yes, very sad and yes, leaving a massive whole in my heart. But I have a lot to be thankful for. Growing up on a farm I always had a dog that I loved, but when we left the farm we had to leave my dog George behind. Well, he wasn’t actually my dog, he was the neighbour’s dog who adopted me and because they bought our farm, Dad decided the dog should stay, which I totally disagreed with and the day we drove off it broke my heart. I never had a dog for years after that until I met old mate and we always have had at least one dog. We started with a bullterrier or two, then staffies, then a bull terrier dingo cross, then a Cairn terrier and finally a toy poodle. Wow, talk about transition. The day old mate came home with the little rescue dog, I thought – what have you done to me? Like the day I was carrying him across the carpark like a handbag and a big tattooed V8 ute driver pulled up in front of
me and said, “You look like a pansy with that dog.” I thought, here we go. The guy lent over in his car to pick up something while I tried to figure out a response and he held up a fluffy little white dog, started laughing and said, “I got one too,” as he drove off. I loved every dog I have had but I must say this little bloke got right under my skin. He was all for routine, morning walk then breakfast, and nightly walk and dinner religiously by the clock. If he saw me making a cup of tea, he knew I was heading for the lounge in the garage where he could have nap while I read my book. Even when he got crook, he still had that internal clock ticking to exactly the routine he was used to over the last decade. He is resting peacefully now and I hope he meets George and the rest of the crew in doggy heaven. Thank you to Henry and crew at the Natural Vets and Monique at Pet Affair for their loving care of my little mate. As Mark Twain wrote: “The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not mans.” Amen to that.

Make-A-Wish Australia has been bringing hope and joy to seriously ill kids for 35 years by granting wishes to brighten children’s lives. Some kids are racing a battle against time to complete their wish. Some run out of time. But the look on these kid’s faces when their wish comes true is something you never forget. The top five wishes include to travel somewhere special with family; to have a puppy best friend; to have a gaming computer or iPhone; to meet a celebrity and to have a cubby house. Little Freya wished to save the dugongs. Fred’s wish was to go to the galaxy far away where the land of Star Wars exists. Archie wanted a cubby house with chickens. There is a local young lady named Breanna Medcalfe who is one of the most amazing souls you will ever meet. She was born with a high-level spinal cord injury,

which means she has limited movement from the neck down and most day-to-day tasks are a challenge from her wheelchair. Breanna was granted a wish and do you know what she wished for with this precious opportunity? To help other kids rather than herself. Breanna’s wish was to host a function of 500 people in Sydney to raise as much money as possible for MakeA-Wish. After three years of planning and working on this dream, the event is happening soon and is sold out. You can help by donating auction items. “I thought it would be fun to help organise a party for one day and I made that wish three years ago when I thought it was better to help give back and help other kids”, says the Ilkley local who is studying law. There are 20 kids on the Coast who are currently waiting for their wishes to come true. The wish for each child brings hope and something to look forward to when most days are filled with hospital and pain. We wish those 20 local families a little bit of magic, a splash of money to make the dreams come true, and let’s throw in a few miracles along the way.

It is often the case that executors live far and wide and that is usually not an issue in estate administration. Care must, however, be taken before appointing an overseas resident to be the sole executor of an Australian estate. An estate is a trust. The residency status of a trust is determined by whether the trustee is an Australian resident for tax purposes. If the management and control of the trust is not based in Australia, this can have some significant tax implications for the estate administration. t’s a tale of two different approaches to home design for new home and established dwelling buyers as the impact of COVID changes their priorities. At the top end of the market where Next Property Group’s Loren Wimhurst has most of her sales, buyers just want to get in in a market where there is limited stock. Their highest priority appears to be the right position, either near the water or on acreage, and the property’s potential. “I haven’t had one buyer all year say I am buying because I am working from home,” Ms Wimhurst says. “The buyers are more fixated on the location rather than what is in the home.” But for the buyers who are flooding Thompson Sustainable Homes (TSH) with new home orders, their priorities for living well on the Coast are different and enlightening. TSH marketing manager Renita Gordon says top of the list is a greater emphasis on multi-generational living that “ensures there is secondary space for the grandparents to have their piece of paradise”.

Ms Gordon is noticing some young families wanting to downsize. “They have had the big home, the big block and now they are saying, ‘you know, we don’t really need this, we need to bring everything back’,” Ms Gordon says. “And for those younger buyers that may have benefitted from a bigger block and have made some money off that, they’re realising what is more important is the family and coming together rather than extending their wealth,” she says.

COOLUM COACH CONFIDENT OF BIG SEASON AHEAD
C
oolum Dolphins coach Zac Woolfield has set some courageous goals for the year ahead as he laps up the early highs and lows of a historic step into senior coaching. The 20-year-old was announced as the Dolphins new men’s coach in November last year. He is the youngest in the history of Coast football to take on the senior men’s coaching role. His appointment comes after a tough year for the club in which they were forced to pull the pin on the season due to COVID-19 impacts. Woolfield got his maiden pre-season as Dolphins leader underway last month and has been quick to embrace high hopes for the team. “I’m loving it,” he says. “It’s definitely a bit of a learning curve and I’ve learned a lot in the limited amount of weeks that I’ve been there. “But I’m just super happy with the recruitment we’ve had, that helps obviously and all the lads are brilliant.” He says early pre-season preparations are coming along nicely. “They’re honestly a great bunch of lads and training has been very intense and at a high quality,” he says. “I’ve got no problems at all with the players’ mentalities and all that, everything is looking like it’s going to come together very well.” Coolum has had a bumpy competitive start after losing their opening pre-season trial 6-1 against reigning premiers Noosa and being knocked out of the FFA Cup at
55 MOOLOOLABA NIPPER CHAMPS The glory days of surf sport will return at the 2021 Youth State Championships, with an unforgettable experience set for both competitors and spectators. The three-day event held at North Kirra Life Saving Club will be action-packed with thousands of the next generation surf sports superstars battling each other on the surf and sand in their quest for state glory. An impressive 55 Nippers from Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club have qualified to compete at the Queensland Youth State Championships. On Sunday March 7, the Mooloolaba Nippers State Team were presented with their official State Team 2021 uniforms, in a special ceremony in front of family, friends, peers and VIPs. The uniforms will be worn with pride as the team represents Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club at the event, which starts on March 12. The Queensland Youth State Championships 2021 is the pinnacle of Surf Sports for the U11 to U15 Nippers. The event is held from the March 12 to 14, at Kirra Surf Lifesaving Club, the Gold Coast. The Mooloolaba state team will compete in events including board rescues, Ironperson, surf swimming, one-kilometre and two-kilometre beach runs, beach flags and sprint.

However, Woolfield wasn’t too concerned. “We’re learning something from every game and every week,” he says. “It takes a little bit of time for everything to gel sometimes. “I’m not worried at all and still confident that we will have a very good year.” He says there’s still plenty to fine tune ahead of the season and has plans for two more pre-season games. “The biggest thing to work on is just our intensity,” he says. “I think it’s probably lacked the last couple of weeks but that comes when you’ve got so many different players from so many different backgrounds. “It’s just about getting everyone on the same page.” Coolum have recruited well, signing a number of former Sunshine Coast Fire players including striker Danny Bailey, Aidan Morris-Bullot, Christopher Nwokeke, Elliot Marsay and Doug Brown. “They’re top quality QPL players that are probably a little too good for this league so it’s amazing that we’ve been able to bring them in,” he says. Woolfield is hopeful Coolum wouldn’t just return from a tough year but make an impact too. “I think a top four finish is minimum for us this year,” he says. “With the players we’ve got I’m super confident that we can get that done if everything goes right.”
LIGHTNING BOAST DEFENSIVE VERSATILITY IN 2021 Sunshine Coast Lightning teased a potent new defensive combination in Ashlee Unie and Kate Shimmin in last week’s practice match against the Queensland Firebirds. The pair took to the court for the first time together in the trial match and immediately made an impact. Local Sunshine Coast product Unie, who was promoted to the senior list in 2021 after a long-serving apprenticeship as Training Partner, is not taking the added responsibility lightly. The 24-year-old has been working tirelessly throughout the pre-season with a focus on building her combination

with Shimmin while internationals Karla Pretorius and Phumza Maweni are still abroad. “Obviously I’m looking for consistency before we head into the season but there are foundations that we can build on,” says Unie. “It was the first time I’ve played with Kate Shimmin, so we were trying to figure out how each other moves – figuring that out for future games. “Without South African players Karla Pretorius and Phumza Maweni, we were a bit short on numbers in the circle, so Kate and I really got the opportunity to develop that combination.” The versatility that Lightning possesses in that area of the court will be a point of difference from the 2020 side and could prove highly dangerous. With two months to continue developing connections and combinations, Unie is excited to see how each player can play their role and compliment the team moving forward. “We are still focusing on the basics – what structures are we running, how can we swap between the different ones and what works best for us,” she says. “Kate and I are hoping to really solidify our connection so we have more options when the South African players do come back – in saying that of course we can’t wait to see them.” The output from both Unie and Shimmin impressed Head Coach Kylee Byrne who acknowledges that their combination will only strengthen and mature with time.
