From the editor This week, we feature a quintessential Sunshine Coast scene on our front cover. Our wonderful, clean beaches are just one of the reasons we live here and why we are happy to holiday in our own backyard. Yes, COVID conditions have certainly restricted our movements and we do not have the access to long distance travel we had, for so long, taken for granted. But these restrictions have also encouraged us to experience a staycation – in other words, a holiday on home ground. The word from tourism operators is that locals have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to enjoy a home away from home holiday from the Coast to the hinterland in a variety of accommodation styles, including B&Bs, boutique hotels and luxe resorts. The latest tourism figures are good news for the industry, and it is certainly
is a positive version of shopping local. On the other hand, Jane Stephens’ column regarding waste disposal is a timely reminder of how human beings also have a great capacity to ruin the things we love most. Take care my friends, the world is overloading with our waste and the natural environment just can’t stomach it. It was while I was contemplating the subject of the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty that I got thinking about the relevance of a floral emblem to symbolise our region’s natural environment. I have mooted the idea on the Letters page and wonder what you think about a flower or plant serving as an emblem of our area? I’m looking forward to hearing your views.

FUTURE TV Each year, big TV makers display the dazzling technology that could eventually come to your home TV set, though generally not soon. In addition to the yearly crop of ever-bigger, brighter and sharper TVs, LG Display will show off a ‘smart bed’ that includes a 55-inch transparent TV that rises from the bed frame. Another version of the transparent TV is designed for restaurants, so customers could browse the menu and watch a chef prepare food behind it at the same time. LG has also announced a bendable version of a 48-inch display that can curve on demand – a feature designed for gamers.
COVID has inspired the tech world to invent disinfecting robots, smart masks, touchless toilets and enhanced microphones for home office video conferencing. WORDS: Mae Anderson, AAP

ES, the annual gadget show that showcases the buzziest and brightest tech, looks different this year – less Vegas glitz, more internet efficiency. With no physical conference in Las Vegas due to the pandemic, 1800 companies are instead taking to streaming video to show off new products and technology to 150,000 attendees across the globe. Trends to watch reflect the tumultuous year that preceded it. These include COVID-related robots and gadgets, products that make it easier to work from home, more uses for 5G technology, AI infused in everything, and TVs that can bend or even become transparent.

Technology to battle the coronavirus will be big on the virtual show floor this year. Several companies are showcasing disinfecting robots. LG is introducing an autonomous UV-C light robot designed to irradiate viruses on heavily touched surfaces. (Largely unmentioned is the fact that COVID is largely transmitted by airborne vapor droplets, not viral smears on surfaces.) To that end, LG is promoting a wearable air purifier and a portable air purifier that you can use to purify air in a car or office. They both have fans and HEPA filters. A smaller company called AirPop debuted the Active+ Smart Mask,
After years of telecom companies promising new superfast 5G wireless networks, 5G will actually be here in 2021. Verizon chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg delivered the CES 2021 kickoff keynote all about 5G and what it can offer for telemedicine, distance learning, and other uses. He gave examples of projects Verizon has been working on, including virtual tours of Smithsonian exhibits, virtual reality science lessons for students, and drone deliveries by a UPS pilot program of medicine and other deliveries, all powered by Verizon’s 5G network. On the last day of CES, Samsung will debut its new 5G enabled iteration of its Samsung Galaxy phone – an event that isn’t affiliated with
CES but still likely to draw buzz. In between, expect plenty of demos and panels about uses for 5G in phones and beyond, such as in cars and smart cities.
FUTURE OF WORK Many of us have now had almost a year of experience adjusting our home office setup and are painfully aware what works and what doesn’t. Companies will be touting devices and accessories to improve working from home and help make people more productive. For example, Dell is offering a videoconferencing friendly monitor that is easy to adjust and swivel to get the optimum angle for video calls, complete with a high resolution webcam. A company called Shure is promoting a microphone for the home office designed to enhance speech audio quality for video conferencing. And Targus is offering a suite of products for remote or hybrid work: a UV-C LED light that sits on your desk to disinfect electronics, an antimicrobial backpack to carry around work tablets and laptops, a tablet cradle workstation and a universal phone dock.
SMARTER CARS CES will be a major showcase for the newest in electric cars and autonomous vehicles. GM CEO Mary Barra will deliver a keynote on the future of its car brands and electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz will show off its AI-infused ‘Hyperscreen’, a display that extends across the entire width of the dashboard. It can be voice activated and lets the driver and front seat passenger do everything from make calls to activate a seat massage. Fiat-Chrysler will offer interactive, 3D virtual tours of its cars and technology. It also worked with Google to create an augmented reality model of its Jeep Wrangler 4xe hybrid you can see on your phone.

Travelling locally in a COVID world Tourism has been one of the industries hardest hit by COVID-19 and its related restrictions. But those who are adapting are surviving as more Queenslanders choose to holiday in our region. WORDS: Gail Forrer. IMAGE: VISIT SUNSHINE COAST
I
t’s been more than 12 months since we first heard of a virus called COVID-19 and in that time the world as we know it has gone through considerable changes. The mind boggles when you start to name a few of the things that have become part of daily life – border closures, social distancing, crowd limitations, spontaneous lockdowns, working from home and wearing masks are now all so much a part of everyday life we call it the ‘new normal’. In many cases, government used financial payments as an economic instrument to ensure the survival of airline companies and through JobKeeper kept local businesses afloat. Yet there are other responses that just have to run their erratic course. For instance, random lockdowns due to virus clusters and the subsequent announcements of border closures without any hint of an opening time. Under these conditions, the tourism industry is, to say the least, working through a difficult and uncertain period. Nevertheless, despite the doom and gloom, a silver lining has been gathering around intrastate travel. In Queensland, the state boasting the lowest COVID rate in Australia, the locals are supporting each other, and to the joy and relief of accommodation operators, are holidaying locally.

A year after Australia’s border closed, although vaccines are now well and truly on the horizon, there’s no predicting how COVID will run its course. At this stage, Victorians have been the most affected after living for six weeks under severe lockdown conditions and just when things started to look better, it was lockdown time again. Sydney’s Northern Beaches went into lockdown around Christmas time, followed by Greater Sydney CBD, and so it goes. In comparison, though not without its own clusters, Queensland’s COVID record is outstanding for its pandemic resistance. However, while the Sunshine state has long provided an easy-to-get-to sunny alternative for Southerners escaping the cold, three COVID-induced Queensland border closures have turned straightforward travel arrangements into a mad scramble often resulting in an unhappy ending. For Sydney couple Janice and Martin Alexander and their two teenage children, a Christmas visit to the Sunshine Coast to relax and visit close family is a regular event. With fingers crossed, they booked accommodation early, but were disappointed when Queensland closed its borders on December 21. They also had to disappoint the accommodation owners and cancel a 10-day booking over the lucrative Christmas period.

“However, we really appreciated the response from the accommodation manager when we cancelled,” Mr Alexander says. “They gave a couple of choices – either an immediate refund or holding onto our deposit and tentatively booking another date.
“We’re optimists, so we have booked another date, and with the Queensland border now open our arrival might be sooner rather than later,” he says. All in all, it is estimated the December 21 border closure cost JetStar and Qantas 1500 flights and 200,000 passenger bookings. Moving forward to February 1, the Queensland government lifted the restrictions on travel from New South Wales. Since then, border passes have no longer been required for anyone travelling from New South Wales, unless they have been in a declared hotspot or overseas in the last 14 days. The border opening coincides with the launch of a major tourism campaign, Good to Go, developed by Tourism & Events Queensland and aimed at attracting interstate travellers. The Good to Go campaign, said to cost around $1 million, comes days after Prime Minister Scott Morrison knocked back Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s request for an extension to JobKeeper (which ends on March 28) to keep the state’s $28-million tourism industry afloat. The tourism industry employs 234,000 Queenlanders. Fortuitously, considering the advent of COVID, the campaign was developed in response to declines from interstate and international sources and targeted the drive market, specifically the three million residents living within a 300-kilometre radius of the Sunshine Coast. Recently appointed Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel believes the campaign’s success is reflected in recently released figures. According to the latest National Visitor Survey released by Tourism Research Australia, there has been an almost 40 per cent increase in intrastate visitors to the Sunshine Coast for the third quarter of 2020. The figures show a total of 837,000 intrastate visitors travelled to the Sunshine Coast between July 1 and September 30 compared with 599,000 for the corresponding quarter in 2019. However, there was an overall decrease in domestic visitor numbers, which were down 3.7 per cent to 886,000 for the quarter. Mr Stoeckel says while many Sunshine Coast operators enjoyed a strong summer period, other operators were unable to pivot their business to cater for an intrastate market and there is lot more work to be done to support these operators. “It’s encouraging to hear that many of our Sunshine Coast operators have also enjoyed a strong summer period, with some operators even reporting aboveforecast results for the period,” he says. Aldy Johnston owner-operator of Secrets on the Lake – a hinterland boutique accommodation facility and restaurant located on Lake Baroon close to Montville town centre – is quietly confident. After 20 years in business, when COVID struck last March, rather than panic Ms Johnston and her partner took the opportunity to look at the ways to do things a bit differently, including renovations. During that time when cancellations phoned in, they offered

The Sunshine Coast tourism industry is reaping the benefits of of Queenslanders supporting Queenslanders during COVID-19 alternative bookings, so no one had to forfeit deposits. That said, Ms Johnston moved on to what is her best ever occupancy period. “For the last seven months, we’ve had a 100 per cent occupancy rate,” she says. In comparison, she says, the winter months usually had a 95 per cent occupancy rate, while November was 80 per cent. However, she has noted the change in clientele. “Many people are locals who are holidaying in their own backyard,” she says. “For some of them, instead of going to the Gold Coast, they’re coming here.” These people are spreading the word and more bookings are coming from that. Ms Johnston is also pleased to say she has been able to keep her staff. “Except for one chef, who left in July and we have only just been able to replace him,” she adds. This month Mr Stoeckel announced the launch of a new national campaign with travel partner Expedia Media Solutions under the Wotif booking site
to secure new bookings to the Sunshine Coast. The campaign focus of Sunshine Coast Real Deals is spearheaded by inspirational reasons to visit the region and special deals. Mr Stoeckel says the aim of the online campaign is simple: “To increase visitors, room nights and travel to the region post January and during the shoulder period. “This national campaign will educate visitors on the diversity of experiences and accommodation offerings on the Sunshine Coast and provide compelling deals for holidaymakers to book their next holiday to the Sunshine Coast in our shoulder period,” he says. “According to Wotif data, we know the Sunshine Coast is already the most popular school holiday destination in Queensland. This campaign looks to broaden this popularity and targets couples, empty nesters and families to visit outside our peak school holiday periods.”

NEW STORE PAYS HOMAGE TO HISTORY One of the largest independently operated and owned hardware suppliers in Queensland, Sunshine Mitre 10, is set to open a new flagship store in Nambour later this year, the same town where the business began 110 years ago. Sunshine Mitre 10 general manager Neil Hutchins (pictured) says the company, which has 18 locations throughout Queensland, is proud to announce the new site at 980 Nambour Connection Road has council approval and will open later this year. “The transformation of the 13,000 square-metre site is well underway, and the local community has already shown excitement and support for this endeavour. The new location in Nambour is important because it not only meets the increasing demand from our retail and trade customer base, but it also supports the town of Nambour and pays respect to the heritage where the company was started by Walter Lanham in 1910.”
Community groups on the Sunshine Coast can benefit from federal government grants up to $20,000 each for local infrastructure and essential community equipment under the latest round of the Stronger Communities Programme. Community organisations in the federal electorate of Fisher will share a total of $150,000 in this round. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says up to 20 projects in the southern and central Sunshine Coast will be funded, with grants between $2,500 and $20,000 available. Organisations can contact Mr Wallace’s office on 5493 5556 to request an Expression of Interest Form. EOI applications close on February 19.

In its 26th year, youth parliament offers Queenslanders aged 15 to 25 the opportunity to speak up for their communities and learn first-hand about parliamentary processes. The state government has revealed 18,600 consumer complaints were resolved in 2020, seeing more than $12 million returned to Queenslanders thanks to the efforts of the Office of Fair Trading. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman says consumer complaints in Queensland rose almost 20 per cent in 2020. On the Sunshine Coast 1298 complaints were made to the OFT with $962,329 in redress obtained. The top five complaints related to personal and household goods, travel agents, personal and household services, motor vehicle sales and motor vehicle service, repairs and parts.
VOLLIES PICK UP 500KG OF RUBBISH A reduction in the amount of rubbish collected on a clean-up for the hatchlings event in January has seen 495.5 kilograms of rubbish picked up by 697 volunteers across 19 Sunshine Coast locations. It is believed this is 100 kilograms less than last year, with organisers hopeful the littering message is sinking in. “Some of the top items picked up were cigarette butts, single use plastic items such as straws, cutlery and plastic food packaging,” event organiser Raeleen Draper says. “This year we also saw an extraordinary amount of microplastics – and unfortunately there were even two couches collected from Warana.” Councillor Peter Cox is thanking volunteers who joined in the clean-up effort for the many turtles who nest and hatch locally. “This season already, we’ve seen two clutches of turtle hatchlings emerge and make their way out to the ocean, and there are more to come over the next two to three months.”
FEMALE SURF LIFE SAVING LEADERS BACK-TO-SCHOOL ROAD SAFETY Police have been out and about for back-to-school travellers on patrolling 40-kilometre-per-hour school zones. Buderim Mountain State School had a visit from the local police and Department of Transport and Main Roads to remind children and parents to put road safety first. “Children can be impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why police are asking motorists to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school,” Acting Sergeant Sandy Atkinson says. “Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.”
Surf Life Saving Australia has launched its second Women’s Mentoring Program, with 42 women from across the country to take part in the 12-month program. The group of 21 mentors and 21 mentees will participate in the program designed to strengthen leadership skills and develop the next generation of female leaders within surf life saving. WHY IS LITTLE JONNY THE WAY HE IS? Sometimes children are unable to reach their potential, that’s when SunnyKids can step in and help. WORDS: Kathleen Hope.
J
onny is seven years old. Every weekday Jonny gets himself ready for school and walks the short 200 metres down the road to his primary school to see his friends. By the time he gets to school, his ankles are hurting, and his legs are sore. Jonny makes a plan today. He has decided he won’t get into trouble. He promises himself he will not whinge about his sore legs; he will behave so his teacher doesn’t get mad and his mum won’t get upset. This is a promise that Jonny will likely break. Every day is a challenge for Jonny as he tries to focus on his schoolwork. He wants to have fun with his friends in class and they think he is the ‘funny kid’, so he has to live up to his reputation. The classroom teacher is watching closely, anticipating the moment that Jonny loses control. In a short time, it becomes clear that Jonny is frustrated with his schoolwork and begins to play distractedly. When Jonny is challenged, he begins embracing his ‘class clown’ act and challenges the teacher. This disrupts other students in the class and inevitably leads to Jonny being told to go to the office. Sitting on a chair in the office, Jonny holds his head down low and tries
not to make eye contact with other adults in the office. He knows what’s coming. He knows he is in trouble again. No-one knows that Jonny hasn’t eaten yet today. His mum was sleeping when he left for school and Jonny didn’t pack lunch or eat breakfast. There is food in the house, but mum was so tired after caring for Jonny’s dad through the night. You see, Jonny’s dad was in a serious car accident and needs a full-time carer. He is in pain constantly and this affects his mood, which makes the family home tense to live in.
Jonny’s mum is working but earning just enough to keep a roof over their heads. Jonny had a hearing test last year and needs a hearing aid, but mum couldn’t afford to pay the full price, so Jonny continues to struggle with his learning. He feels left out and not important because mum has to focus on dad. Jonny is embarrassed to tell his teachers that he can’t understand the work or what they are asking of him and he continues to fall behind. Jonny knows he is the ‘bad’ kid in school, but he wants people to see that he
is trying. When the school calls mum for the third time that week, she knows they need support. This is the day she reaches out to SunnyKids and asks for help. Thanks to a child sponsorship, SunnyKids has been working with the family for two months now. As a result of that donation, within a few weeks Jonny has been to see a podiatrist and is now wearing orthotics (donated by the podiatrist). Jonny is no longer in pain. He will need to wear these for the next two years, but he doesn’t feel embarrassed because no one can see them inside of his shoes. Although the family situation is not perfect, Jonny is well on his way to reaching his potential in a safe and functional home. All names are fictitious to protect the family involved.

I
f you’re in the market for love but feel like you can only find single people in primary school or retirement villages, think again. There are plenty of eligible singles on the Coast and a new dating concept aims to match them up, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Krushology was created by a Peregian-based team of romantics who believe people have grown tired of the superficiality of online dating, but are also over trawling bars and clubs wondering whether fate will intervene. Launching on February 13 at Land & Sea Brewery in Noosa, it is a structured dating event for singles aged 35 to 55 who are sick of swiping, blind dates, singles parties and speed dating, yet struggle to meet Mr or Ms Right in conventional settings. “For our first event we’re inviting up to 70 people to come along and we’re trying our best to balance it out with a mix of ages,” co-organiser Erik Bigalk says. “The aim is to have 30 to 35 men and the same number of women who will have six to eight structured dates on the night, plus open mingling time where they can connect with people over food and drinks. “The women will choose who they want to date, then using queue cards we provide, they’re given about 10 to 15 minutes per date,” Mr Bigalk says. “We consider that to be enough time to create a meaningful conversation and know whether this is someone they’d like to get to know more. It’s not like a dinner date where it can take a couple of hours to get out of if it’s not going well, and it’s longer than a speed date.
“We’ll have ice-breakers and fun games that help break the ice and help bring people out of themselves without having to get excessively drunk. We have created a series of queue questions around ways to create meaningful conversations. It allows people to see who someone is as a person, what do they like, what are they passionate about. The questions aren’t too personal but can lead to an easy conversation.” Mr Bigalk says they tried out a similar concept in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, refining the idea to come up with what they believe will be a real winner for the Sunshine Coast dating scene. After the inaugural event, it’s hoped Krushology will become a monthly event and be extended to younger and older age brackets. “We’ve had interest expressed from the 19 to 21 age group and the over 55s,”
Mr Bigalk says. “People seem to be looking for meaningful connection, but don’t necessarily want to bar hop or swipe purely based on the first impressions of a badly taken selfie. “Most people have their heart in the right place and it doesn’t matter if you have blonde or dark hair, if you’re tall or short, if you really connect with someone, that’s what it’s really about, but we’re missing the point with online dating. “With this event, we really like the idea that you get to see whether there is chemistry right away. You see someone and think, ‘I like her’ or ‘he’s cute’. We thought an event where you meet people face-to-face would be a good way to facilitate that, but it’s so different to speed dating or singles parties. If someone needs a bit of moral support, we have hosts and facilitators who can help. We have more touch points on creating fun
and laughter. We all laugh about something together and it bonds us as a group and takes the nerves away. It’s all about chemistry and a new style of dating that’s fun, less pressurised and a lot safer.” According to event host Holly Davis, ticket sales are indicating women are beating men to the box office. So, all you single men out there – there are ample women awaiting to meet you on the night. Land & Sea Brewery has been chosen as it is a great venue to go for a drink and a bite to eat, socialise and meet, with a private back room complete with special gin bar playing host to the event. The venue will provide finger food and complimentary welcome drinks. Home distilled gin and ale will add a little social lubricant – just enough to feel at ease but not too much that people end up swinging from the chandeliers. The bar will be open for service throughout and there is scope to party on or dine after the event concludes. The Krushology team believes in making a positive difference and is contributing a portion of the ticket price towards the maintenance of a mobile eye clinic that provides sight restoration and blindness prevention in Indonesia.

WHY SUN BEARS STOLE SARAH PYE’S HEART Author and educator Dr Sarah Pye credits her adventurous childhood for putting her on the path of conservation, and her keen desire to raise awareness of the plight of the Asian sun bear. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A
uthor and conservationist Dr Sarah Pye had an unconventional childhood, one she believes helped foster her love for the environment. Originally from England, her parents took her out of school at the age of 13 and moved her and her brother onto a 32-foot yacht. They sailed from England to the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and on to the Americas. Dr Pye grew up holding night watches, trimming sails and hunkering down in raging storms. To say it was adventurous is an understatement. “We lived on the boat for eight years,” she says. “I went to university in America from the boat. My parents were quite courageous to take me and my brother out of school. They were both trained teachers and had had enough of the English school system. “The experience on the boat made me self-disciplined and self-reliant. It also gave me a wider view of the world and I got to learn from experiences rather than books. That was a big plus. It also connected me to the environment, which has definitely influenced what I’ve done.” She studied hospitality management in the US and in 1994, settled in the Whitsundays. There she opened an adventure tourism business, Ocean Rafting, with her then husband. Living her life from one adventure to another, she moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2002 and completed a Master of Communications degree, publishing a book called Kids Welcome to Queensland in 2009. But in 2012 she launched into the greatest adventure so far, one that has shaped the past 10 years of her life. “I went to Borneo to see orangutans and met Dr Wong Siew Te at his Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre,” she says. “I was moved by the fascinating, quirky bears and the dedication of Dr Wong, who was working to save them from extinction. The moment I saw sun bears climbing 40 metres in the trees and swinging on vines like orangutans, I was hooked. With Dr Wong’s charisma and commitment, I just felt I needed to help.” In the rainforests of Asia, sun bears are poached for body parts, which are thought to have medicinal properties. Orphaned cubs, with their small size and endearing
features, are kept illegally as pets. Malaysian ecologist Dr Wong Siew Te has dedicated his life to saving the world’s smallest bear from extinction. “My attraction was a combination of the animals and the man himself, who needed help to save a species. I asked him what I could do to help and he just said, ‘do what you do best’. It’s such a powerful thing to say. He wasn’t prescriptive; he left it up to me. It led me down the idea of introducing him to the University of the Sunshine Coast.” In 2014, she returned to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre with four public relations students from USC to design a sun bear adoption program, which was later launched at Australia Zoo. USC awarded Dr Wong an Honorary Doctorate for his conservation work in 2016.
Dr Pye’s book Saving Sun Bears was launched on World Environment Day last year and is a biography of Dr Wong’s life and work. For her book and accompanying thesis she was awarded a Doctorate in Creative Arts by USC last year. With her publishing company having been hit hard by COVID, she has taken back the rights to her book and is about to relaunch it. “We had over 3000 people at the global online launch last year,” she says. “It’s a global story that attracts a lot of people throughout the world who have a passion for conservation. Sun bears are an animal that share the forest with a million other species, many who are endangered. You save the rainforest, you save more than just sun bears.” Dr Pye is launching her second book based on Dr Wong’s work on March 2 at Voices on the Coast literary festival. “It’s called Wildlife Wong and the Sun Bear and it targets eight to 12-year-olds,” she says. “They’re moving Voices on the Coast online this year, which is good for me because I have a global audience. My book is part of a new series about different animals in the rainforest and it’s designed to connect children back to the earth. It’s a lofty goal. “The books will have three sections. It connects on a narrative level, a scientific level and an informational level. “It’s nice to sell books, but that’s not my primary aim. The most important thing is to build awareness. The more books we sell, the more we can build awareness about the rainforests and the need to save them.”

Heartily agree with Margaret-Anne’s letter (MWP February 4) about the need for an app, similar to CovidSafe or the QR code, to report offenders illegally using disability parking spots. She may be pleased to learn that there is already one available which we have only recently learnt about. It is called Snap Send Solve and is available free from the App Store or by doing an internet search. It can be used to alert authorities about many issues from illegal parking, dumped rubbish to trip hazards. So far, we haven’t used it, but they say Snap Send Solve makes reporting quick and easy. With only a few taps you can send the information to the responsible authority. Margaret-Anne is right, serial offenders do not care because they get away with it too often. If more people report them, sooner or later they may get the message – do not park in spots designated for those who genuinely need them.
Australia’s floral emblem is the golden wattle, Queensland claims the Cooktown orchid and Brisbane’s the red poincettia. Do you think we need one for the Sunshine Coast? Reading the article re the sale of Suncity Tenpin Bowling site (MWP February 4) and the much-deserved semi-retirement of owners, John Griffin and his wife, after 40 years of creating and running this wonderful community facility confirmed the rumours everyone had heard: that the centre will become another high-rise unit development. We’ll see the ever-growing flow of vehicles from Mari Street onto Alex Parade and beyond. We can’t stop progress – some would say that’s the problem with paradise: when you think you’ve found it, everyone wishes to move there. We have to hope that common sense prevails, that the developers, in conjunction with planning authorities, consider appropriate off-street parking, traffic flow and environmental impact before another high-rise apartment block is given the go-ahead.

I
thought this week I would share my opinion on a couple of big issues with you rather than some debacle that I got myself into, which I have a wealth of material on. Firstly, the tragedy of that poor family run down by an out-of-control youth has been on my mind since it happened and judging by media reports, it has been on everyone’s mind, including our Premier who had the hide to criticise the judicial system when in fact it sits squarely in the collective laps of those who govern. The part that is particularly sad is if you ask a first responder about this terrible behaviour and lack of consequences for out-of-control youth, they will likely tell you that it hasn’t just happened, it has been getting worse over the last four years and has just been highlighted because of what happened at Alexandra Hills. I think back to the previous state governments boot camps that were howled down by civil libertarians and shelved once the current government got in and if I remember correctly, they also lifted the age someone could be
prosecuted at the same time. There are no consequences and no respect for our police or anyone else. It is a bloody mess that we as a society now have to lie in and maybe, just maybe, it will take an awful bloody tragedy to institute some change. Margaret Court’s gong is another on everyone’s lips, with people handing back honours and an outpouring of rage over her honour because of her public thoughts on gay rights, which are hurtful and constant. I think she is way off the mark and I think she is a bitter woman. I find it hard to marry up her Christian beliefs to being an actual Christian and more importantly, a good person. But that is what she believes and should she be punished for it by our country and her amazing record as a tennis player forgotten? Certainly not. In my opinion, we are talking about tennis, nothing else. I would like to think I am a Christian but I don’t quote the Bible – well apart from John 8:7: “‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone…” If we all lived by that verse, we would be a much more tolerant society.

s beer better than wine? I was a member of a debating team pondering this question recently. I was team wine, of course. You see, wine is my favourite four-letter word. And you can use it to self-test for COVID-19, which is important given we need to stay vigilant and keep the lurgy at bay. It is a two-step simple self-test. You simply sniff your wine. If you can smell, there is a great chance you do not have COVID-19. Then you have a swig of your favourite merlot. If you can taste, then that is further proof you probably do not have COVID-19. I did this self-test 45 times during the debate, just to be vigilant. I waffled on with my winning wine facts. Wine is responsible for seductions, scandals and salacious stories. From the goon box to a bottle of Grange, we bottle our dreams, hopes and love and pour them out in the form of wine. We turn to wine to toast our special occasions in life and to punctuate the fact that we are alive. We toast with wine when we are getting married, engaged, getting a promotion, having a birthday or an anniversary. When my dad died, my
siblings drank a special bottle of red wine on the beach. I will always keep this cork. My point is that drinking wine separates us from animals. Anyone can slop water, barley and hops from a trough – but only humans can pour, ponder and pucker our lips at that first taste of the grapes from God. Jesus did

Man boobs are caused by excess beer consumption. Craft beer hipsters of today are the bra buyers of tomorrow. We gave it our best shot, but team wine lost to team beer in our debate. Perhaps I should have spent more time researching than drinking to prepare for the grape debate.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
T
hose who carelessly drop and go in our open spaces are as filthy as the rubbish they discard. We used to call them litterbugs, but that terms sounds too sweet, too childlike. They are grubs. They are a blight on our community and our landscape. And while they clearly don’t care, we are blessed that there are many who do and are prepared to get their hands dirty in cleaning up their mess. At the end of last month, almost 700 volunteers performed a massive emu parade across Sunshine Coast beaches to ready them for the pitter-patter of tiny flippers.
Turtle hatchlings are beginning to emerge from their sandy entombments and make their way seaward for the fight of their lives. The council holds a rubbish rally yearly to help clear the way. Turtles have become the surprise poster kids of the plastic-free push, because the tiny beggars confuse soft plastics for jellyfish, their preferred little hors d’oeuvres. So the council tries to help them out by getting volunteers to pick up as much garbage from the beaches as they can, so less of it ends up in the brine. This was the eighth year of the beach clean and the gathered throng rightly gave themselves a bit of a pat on the back at the free barbecue at the end, having done a good deed for all, and particularly the little shelled critters. But while the activity is to be lauded and should be continued year on year, one thing just doesn’t ring true to me. The council crowed that this year, across the 19 locations scoured, 100 kilograms less rubbish was found compared with last year. And last year was down on the year before that.
Environment portfolio chair Cr Peter Cox said the 500-odd kilos collected was a sign the community was being more responsible in how they process their waste. Maybe the emu parades were not held across sandy spaces I frequent, but I have one response to the notion we are getting better about our waste disposal: rubbish. Hooey. Bunkum. Garbage. Take a walk on any of our beaches as the tide recedes and look: there are fragments and shards galore, articles and items to burn. I am not suggesting we are reminiscent of Bali or Thailand. I am not saying our beaches look like rubbish tips. Places such as Teewah and Double Island Point are another matter, with larger items being picked up on sweeping stretches of beautiful beach. On a trip there last weekend, my beloved and I found items such as buckets, rope, a thong, a cast-off shirt and a Chinese food container with so many barnacles it looked like it could have been from China itself. But even popular Sunshine Coast beaches that are attended to by council cleaners and machine sand sifters have myriad little bits, and it is the little bits that cause great harm to the little flippered ones. Those who deliberately dump should be named, shamed and fined. And the rest of us are compelled to step up. On any walk in a community or open space, pick up any piece of rubbish you find directly in your path – even the little bits. Because every little bit counts.
COUNCIL SEEKS COMMUNITY FEEDBACK ON FUTURE OF WASTE
Sunshine Coast Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal to introduce an opt-out third bin for garden waste, which could transition to a food organics and garden organics bin service, also known as a FOGO bin. Residents are invited to complete a short online survey and have a say on the future of waste. Service delivery portfolio councillor Christian Dickson says, “Waste becomes a resource, we reduce our region’s greenhouse gas emissions and look after our environment for our children, and their children. I encourage all of our community to have their say. Let us know the changes you’d be willing to make for a sustainable future.” Cr Dickson says the introduction of a compulsory garden waste and FOGO bin would be another step towards Sunshine Coast Council’s goal to transition to a circular economy for waste, in line with its Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy 2015-2025. A
n initiative helping children improve their reading skills while surrounded by lovable dogs is looking for new volunteers for several schools across the region. Story Dogs began on the Sunshine Coast four years ago and was adopted from the United States program that
began in the early 2000s to make reading enjoyable for children. Buderim Region Story Dogs coordinator Carolyn Healy says the need for what they do is growing, and to grow, she needs more volunteers. Ms Healy and her seven-year-old Labrador-cross Molly have been part of the program for more than three years.

“Molly and I started volunteering with Story Dogs early 2017 at Buderim Mountain State School where we work with four year two students for approximately 20 minutes each student one morning each week,” Ms Healy says. “Story Dogs is an Australia-wide literacy program where the students are encouraged to read to our dog in a non-threatening, non-judgemental environment. “This relaxed, fun way helps build confidence and self-esteem by having one-to-one contact for a short time each week.” The program is also proving particularly successful for children with literacy or behavioural problems. Ms Healy is desperate for more volunteers to help at state schools in Buderim, Brightwater, Chevallum, Montville and Mountain Creek. “We need people who have time, approximately 1.5 hours per week, on a set day each week who own a calm, happy child-friendly dog.” Ms Healy says since she began, Molly has become a crowd favourite with the students. “My dog Molly just loves the attention of the students at Buderim Mountain State School and perhaps the treats she gets for being such a good listener may help as well.” Buderim Story Dogs is also looking for corporate or private sponsors to help keep the program running.

uderim Craft Cottage patchworkers group is holding a clearance sale with a variety of quilts and handmade items up
for sale. The group’s Pat Reid says the sale will be the biggest clearance event to date, with many items available at “bargain” prices. “All quilts and other quality items are handmade right here in Buderim. These are items that have piled up in wardrobes and spare rooms over the years and are priced to sell.” The day will also be an opportunity for avid sewers to stock up on materials. “For any other patchworkers out there, members of the group will also be emptying drawers, cupboards and containers of excess fabric along with unwanted patterns, rulers and books,” Mrs Reid says. The sale will coincide with the cottage’s Atrium Gallery annual Autumn Open Day. The gallery is home to handmade gifts made by various crafts people who work out of the cottage. “Some of the artists will demonstrate their art and craft throughout the day for

A
Sippy Down teenager is hoping to extend the gift of love to children affected by domestic violence this Valentine’s Day through her charitable initiative Loving Hope Bears. Glasshouse Christian College Year 12 student Angelique Hallett began the project more than 18 months ago after being inspired at school to tap into her entrepreneurial mind to fix a problem. “The problem I could see is domestic violence in our area at the moment and I couldn’t fix that, so I looked at all the negative impacts and the one that I felt the hardest to swallow was all the children and how it was not their fault,” the 17-year-old says. So far, Angelique has helped 85 children across the Sunshine Coast with the gift of a teddy bear. “Customers come to me and they purchase the opportunity for teddy bears to be given to children. “They can choose to either donate the money to buy a bear for the children or

Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards 2021 It was a great pleasure to attend the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards on Friday, January 22. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the nominees and winners – all really deserved these accolades. Maroochydore Rugby Union Club In recent months, division four has seen some upgrades, including the new change rooms at the Maroochydore Rugby Union Club. These new change rooms are the result of many hours of hard work by club members passionate about women’s participation in rugby union. The Swans Committee has worked tirelessly since 2017 to secure funding and ensure the project’s overall success. Upcoming free events There are a number of exciting things happening in Mooloolaba during February including the Luna Celebration on February 12. Elvis impersonator Mark Andrew and his band will be performing at the Loo with View on February 20, while the Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Races are on February 27 and 28.
Angelique says she is currently in the process of delivering 300 sales to various shelters across the region. The young entrepreneur has also been named Young Citizen of the Year at Sunshine Coast Council’s 2021 Australia Day Awards for her efforts and hopes to continue Loving Hope Bears in a full-time capacity after graduating school this year. In the meantime, Angelique is encouraging locals to consider purchasing a bear this Valentine’s Day. “For Valentine’s Day you can buy one for yourselves and give one. “It’s a tangible gift, it’s a 30-centimetre, big fluffy teddy bear they know they are giving. “Most children who are temporarily in the shelters have not taken anything special with them. “These children will have something to cuddle through good times and bad, knowing someone cares and loves them enough to give a teddy bear.” To purchase a bear visit sharelovinghope.square.site.

People come up and talk to them in a way in which they won’t if they were sitting on a park bench. “We get the most lovely comments from our passengers. For some it’s the first time they have been out in some time or the best day they have had in four years. “It has great benefits in terms of mental health and wellbeing.” Currently Cycling Without Age visits various aged-care facilities, disability services and special schools in the Caloundra region but Mr Rogers is Cycling Without Age is celebrating one year on the Sunshine Coast and is hoping to continue expanding its invaluable community service

volunteer-run charity breaking the barriers of isolation is celebrating one year with hopes to grow its invaluable community service into the future. Cycling Without Age Sunshine Coast began on February 14, 2020 but community captain Tim Rogers says the organisation has been properly running for only six months. “We started in February last year and COVID shut us down within three weeks; we couldn’t even do training,” Mr Rogers says. “We didn’t start running again until very late July. We’ve really been building great momentum since August.” Cycling Without Age originated in Denmark in 2012 and is now in more
than 50 countries with more than 2200 community, or chapter, locations including the Sunshine Coast. Mr Rogers says volunteer pilots, or chauffeurs, offer rides on trishaw bikes for a variety of people with reduced mobility, with community and connection at the forefront of what they do. “Cycling Without Age on one level is as simple as taking people who have reduced mobility and taking them for rides out on our trishaws.” The service assists the elderly, those with a disability or people with a medical condition and Mr Rogers says the trishaws spark conversation, breaking the invisibility felt by some members of the community. “The trishaw has a real presence about

hoping more people who live at home can benefit from using the service. “We know there are plenty of people who just live at home and are with a loved one who is their carer, and we want to make sure they can access our services too,” he says. “It’s about keeping people connected to places they can’t get to themselves and carers can join as passengers or enjoy

some time off knowing their loved one is being looked after.” The organisation currently has four trishaws, two purchased with a Sunshine Coast Council grant and two recently added thanks to the generosity of the community, and two of Australia’s biggest stars. Mr Rogers says the charity held a crowdfunding campaign last year to purchase a wheelchair-friendly trishaw, expanding its ability to cater for a wider range of passengers. The charity also holds a claim to fame after Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman donated a third trishaw to the collection. “The connection there is that Keith’s mum is one of our volunteers.” Cycling Without Age is now hoping to raise enough money to purchase a trailer large enough to transport the trishaws and ultimately expand its service area. Mr Rogers says a community event happens every Wednesday from 2pm at Happy Valley for locals with reduced mobility to experience a trishaw ride. So far, the Sippy Downs local has helped 85 children across region. “Customers come to me and they purchase the opportunity for teddy bears to be given to children. “They can choose to either donate the money to buy a bear for the children or they can ‘buy one give one’ – so buy one for themselves and one for a child. “I will go and transfer those teddy bears to the local shelters and the shelters will pass them on to the children they are looking after.” Angelique says she is currently in the process of delivering 300 sales to various shelters across the region. The young entrepreneur has also been named Young Citizen of the Year at Sunshine Coast Council’s 2021 Australia Day Awards for her efforts and hopes to continue Loving Hope Bears in a full-time capacity after graduating school this year. In the meantime, Angelique is encouraging locals to consider purchasing a bear this Valentine’s Day. “Most children who are temporarily in the shelters have not taken anything special with them. Year 12 student is hoping to extend the gift of love to children impacted by domestic violence this Valentine’s Day through her charitable initiative Loving Hope Bears. Glasshouse Christian College student Angelique Hallett began the project more than 18 months ago after being inspired at school to tap into her entrepreneurial mind to fix a problem. “The problem I could see is domestic violence in our area at the moment and I couldn’t fix that, so I looked at all the negative impacts and the one that I felt the hardest to swallow was all the children and how it was not their fault,” the 17-year-old says.

POTENTIAL Painting your existing furniture is a chance to individualise your interior space. Perhaps you have some quality older furniture that’s in need of a little TLC. Whether it’s a dated piece or a vintage gem, you can revitalise it with a modern vision and some handiwork. There’s plenty of choice. Distressed or block colour? Glossy or matte? Once you have these starting blocks, it’s time to pinpoint the right paint for the project.
This squiggle line was created using Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Antoinette,. A large brush was used and dragged along the furniture to make the lines. The edges were neatened up using a detail brush. The colour Florence was added to the interior of the piece to give a joyous colour pop. Hot pink has depth and energy. Use it as an accent colour alongside cool-toned brights, with reds and pinks for a tonal symphony, or buffer with warm cocoa tones for sophisticated elegance. This shade injects glamour and joy to any room and is called Capri Pink by Annie Sloan.

Australians won’t get subsidies to make electric vehicles more affordable, with the federal government instead flagging support for businesses to help switch company cars. Energy Minister Angus Taylor this month released his long-awaited future fuels strategy, which outlines five priority areas. It includes helping commercial fleets become electrics and hybrids, given 40 per cent of light vehicles were bought by businesses last year. The government believes helping firms switch to electric and hybrid vehicles will result in them being sold second-hand, reducing the cost for individuals and increasing uptake. Subsidies have been ruled out. Mr Taylor argues the government gets a better deal for taxpayers if companies are paid to reduce their emissions through the Emissions Reduction Fund, which has a lower price on carbon. The government predicts 26 per cent of new car sales will be electric by 2030. The strategy is open to feedback until April 2. The transport sector makes up 18 per cent of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions and is expected to rise through to 2030. The automobile association has welcomed the general direction of the strategy but says tax reforms need to be looked at to incentivise the uptake of cleaner vehicles.

Who gets your super when you die?
Understandably, one of the main concerns people have in engaging a lawyer revolves around cost. When you engage a lawyer, they have obligations they must follow and one of the most important documents you will receive is called a “cost agreement”. This document, at a minimum will cover: The scope of work the lawyer has been engaged to do. This will include an outline of the specific dispute that needs to be resolved, what processes will be used to negotiate and whether court will or may be involved. What is not included in the scope of work. For example, the work is limited to only the area of law and scope you have agreed upon. The estimate of fees, and if this estimate is subject to any contingencies, what those are and when the estimate might need to be reviewed. How fees are charged. This will specify if you are paying on a time basis, under a scale for items of work, on completion of steps, for a fixed fee or as otherwise agreed. It is also important to know that generally all the work your lawyer does for you will be chargeable and that different types of work may result in different fees.
People are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of a Binding Death Benefit Nomination (BDBN) to dictate who receives their superannuation on death. Your superannuation is not an asset of your estate. The Trustee of your superannuation fund will determine how benefits are paid on your death – unless you have prepared a BDBN to override any discretion of the Trustee. Recently, the Queensland Supreme Court had to consider the ability for an Attorney (under an Enduring Power of Attorney) to prepare a new BDBN where the member had lost their mental capacity. The Court examined: 1. the superannuation fund’s Trust Deed; and 2. whether there was any specific authority allowing the Attorney to take steps with respect to a BDBN. The Court found that the Attorney was authorised to prepare a BDBN for the incapacitated member. It is important that you regularly review and update your estate planning and consider whether your Enduring Power of Attorney should enable your Attorney to make a BDBN to ensure that your best laid plans are not disrupted.

DIGGING DEEPER INTO COAST RENTAL STRESS COVID conditions has seen people to flocking to the Coast, resulting in a housing shortage. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.
I
t’s no wonder there is residential rental stress occurring on the Sunshine Coast as several obvious, and not so obvious, factors are putting significant pressure on the market. Available rental properties are at a low of 0.3 per cent. What does become available is more expensive. In some cases, people are paying over the advertised rate or paying several months in advance to secure a place. Then there is the median cost increase in rents across the Coast, which have risen $70 per week since January 2020. Adams & Jones agency owner Scott Gooderham, who runs a rental book of over 1000 properties, says there has been a lot of sensationalism around the lack of stock in the rental market. “There isn’t 50-odd families not living somewhere,” he says. “There’s no panic,” he adds when discussing the competitive environment. “It’s human nature at play with people saying ‘I want this property’. If anything, they are wanting to have security about their home and their living in a time when there is no security.” Mr Gooderham is however experiencing homebuyers being caught between the sale of their old home and the purchase of a replacement. In some cases, the replacement cost looks a lot greater than some buyers expected. “I am seeing people who are selling their houses because they are getting really good money and then thinking that they can go get a rental while they work out what they are going to do next,” he says. “And then they don’t get (the rental) and then go into a frenzy, offering more money because they are cashed up. I have seen that a lot.” Population growth on the Coast is another key market pressure says

CoreLogic’s head of residential research Eliza Owen. “It is one of the most popular areas in Australia in terms of internal migration,” she says. Mr Gooderham concurs: “Out of so much uncertainty across the world, people have confidence and certainty about this region,” he says. That attraction is creating some ‘frenzy’ in the rental market, continues Mr Gooderham. It’s being driven by a sense of urgency which is resulting in a competitive market. With the increasing cost of living and buying in the major cities and working from home (WFH) now part of the ‘new normal’ for many businesses, moving to live on the Coast is being seen as an affordable and viable choice. Even though Ms Owen thinks there may be some correction in the WFH approach, “the fact that the economy is starting to improve will probably only make people more mobile and more confident in uprooting and moving home” she says. Another market pressure is the decrease in investor numbers. Over the last 12 months, Ms Owen says CoreLogic’s

data is showing there are fewer investor loans being taken out. “They make up only about one-fifth of the market at the moment versus a historic average of 35 per cent of housing
finance commitments,” she says. “It’s down to about 20 per cent.” She expects that while investors will start gradually returning in 2021, for the Coast the supply of inactivated residential land will hamper investment opportunities. Mr Gooderham says that in the early months of COVID, many major developers were preparing for a potential market slow down as uncertainty abounded. Nobody really knew what was going to happen. “The thought of that stopped stock becoming available,” he added. By July developers started to regain their confidence and move towards developing new projects. “We are going to have a lot of stock come onto the market again, which I believe will slow down this initial hit.” Another pressure point has been the lag in the construction of the HomeBuilder supported new homes due to land release and availability of builders, which is keeping renters in place. The builders have their hands full due to the government stimulation packages and many grant applicants leaving it to the last minute to submit their applications. “The other relief in this rental market in the future will be when people take up the owner-occupied properties,” Ms Owen says. “But while there is a lag for owner-occupiers who are waiting for their new homes to build, they are still sitting in the rental market.” Mr Gooderham remains upbeat about the future of the Coast’s rental market because of the “very low impact of COVID” in Queensland. “I don’t think we have a drama here; we have a good problem to have and it’s created out of the demand to live in this area – and well why wouldn’t you?” he says. “It will find its own feet and we will work through it.”

ith an ambitious recruitment program underway, the Mountain Creek Junior AFC is looking forward to another fun year of Australian Rules footy with more teams and more footy-loving families joining their growing club. This emerging club has experienced exciting growth over the past two years and this year is actively looking to field three teams just for girls – U9s, U11s and U13s. “We’re excited to be launching the program for girls this year, with an opportunity for a broad age group to play
Australian Rules and achieve skills development. More girls are showing interest in this great sport and their participation is growing across the Sunshine Coast,” says club president, Steve Curnow. “Our campaign ‘Girls love footy too’ is catering for girls between the ages of eight to 13 and these teams are an important part of our club’s future. The AFL are doing a great job supporting this development for girls’ participation and we support it whole-heartedly.” Mountain Creek Junior AFC is an inclusive club that encourages boys and girls of all abilities to try Australian Rules,
make new friends and learn skills for life. With a trademark of ‘fun and friendly’, the club aims to provide an environment where families come together to enjoy junior sport, get involved and be part of their community. The football program at Mountain Creek starts with Auskick for girls and boys from age five and is run at Mountain Creek State School. Auskick ‘graduates’ or any five-six-year-olds can then join the Superstars U6s program, where they begin to learn team and game-play skills. They can then join the U8s teams with modified rules which are mixed teams for boys and girls. The boys then move into U10s and this year for the first time girls have the option to be part of a dedicated U9 girls team. Mountain Creek Junior AFC will also aim to field U12s and U14s boys’ teams this year. This is a well-structured pathway but kids can join the club at any time and participate based on their age. FORMER COAST JUNIOR NOW COACHING GOLF IN US UNIVERSITY Former Horton Park junior Lauren Mason has begun her second season as head golf coach at one of the United States’ most respected universities. After being appointed assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2018, Lauren was named head coach in August 2019. Since then the college has had one of its best seasons on record – the women placing in the top five of their six tournaments, and the men claiming two
top six finishes. Two of the women were named in the second team of the All-Lone Star Conference. “Lauren Mason embodies exactly what you want in a coach and leader,” says Judy Sackfield, the deputy director of athletics at the university. “She understands what it takes to be successful on and off the course, and can show players on the men’s and women’s teams how to do it the right way.”

Suncorp Super Netball, in consultation with Sunshine Coast Lightning and competing clubs, has announced a framework for the 2021 season. The SSN season will commence on Saturday May 1, with the league stating its intention to complete a full 14-round home and away format. The grand final will be held on Sunday August 29 at the completion of a regular three-week finals campaign. A full fixture will be released next month, with detailed match information provided for the first month of competition, allowing for the flexibility to adapt to a COVID environment. Lightning CEO Danielle Smith praised the league’s transparency. “There’s a real excitement around the club now that we have a tangible date and format to work towards,” Ms Smith says. “We appreciate the contingency planning and work involved behind the scenes to counter the disruption of the ongoing COVID pandemic, and the additional precautions needed to keep our people and the community safe.”
