Here we go, just over a week away to Christmas Day and despite a wet start to the week, forecasters are advising a clear blue Christmas day. Fine weather on Christmas Day always feels like a gift – but after all we’ve been through this year, fine or damp, it’s not a big deal. Sami Muirhead puts Christmas 2020 into perspective, when she talks about the build-up to December 25 and how everything that’s happened this year has shaped the way she and her family will experience this Christmas day – which being Sami’s family, will be unlimited fun. However, we have been following up on the weather reports and this week our cover story provides the background and advice to dealing with this summer’s predicted weather events. NO MORE FREE RIDES Paid parking will be introduced to Mooloolaba’s new carpark but will remain free elsewhere.
P
aid parking will be introduced to Mooloolaba’s new 700-space multi-storey carpark but councillors have voted to ensure existing on-street parking spaces remain free of charge. After a four-hour debate in Sunshine Coast Council chambers, councillors agreed to move forward with a user-pays system after more than 20 years of traffic problems in the tourism hub. Paid parking will be charged at $2.50 per hour, capped at $12 per day, which many councillors said was a reasonable price for a parking facility one block back from the beach. Free parking spaces in other parts of Mooloolaba, including The Wharf, will have their time limits reduced to one or two hours. Councillor Ted Hungerford put forward an amendment to Mooloolaba’s Local Area Parking Plan to ensure paid parking was not extended onto the streets once paid parking came into force in the new tower on Brisbane Road. It was revealed during the meeting that Mooloolaba’s new ParkNGo carpark, opening in December, could be the first of many such multi-deck facilities on the

Coast, with at least one more possible in Mooloolaba and several in Maroochydore. The introduction of Mooloolaba’s user pays system could shape the future of parking at beach precincts, which are mostly free on the Sunshine Coast. Councillors were told there would still be some 2000 free spaces available in Mooloolaba when paid parking comes into effect. The decision was a blow to the area’s councillor Joe Natoli who referenced Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a Dream’ speech while lamenting the imminent introduction of paid parking in Mooloolaba. Cr Natoli said, like the civil right’s leader’s speech more than 50 years ago, people would “never forget” the day people had to start paying to park near the beach at Mooloolaba. He said it was a “very sad day” and that free parking was symbolic of the easygoing lifestyle of living near the Coast and enjoying the beach. Cr Natoli said the community supported his position against paid parking. Cr David Law raised offence at Cr Natoli’s comments, saying Martin Luther King drew 250,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 over civil rights.

The sport which evolved in the 1940s as “sidewalk surfing” is enjoying a massive resurgence around the globe, leading to year-long waits to buy skateboards in some cases. Coolum Beach instructor Mat ‘Chiggy’ Chigwidden told sunshinecoastnews.com.au that a combination of boredom during the pandemic and skateboarding’s upcoming Olympic debut had boosted its popularity. “It’s been a non-stop snowball of kids rolling in and everyone around the world is saying the skateboard boom in the pandemic is the biggest boom anyone has experienced,” Chiggy said. “The production line is struggling to keep up with the demand and there are huge delays.” Chiggy teaches all ages at his new indoor skate park at Coolum Beach which features half pipes, pool coping, flat bars, ledges, hubbas, vert walls, rails, wheel chair ramps, kickers and more. He offers three-hour sessions every day and has five coaches who instruct Micro Groms, Mixed, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced skateboarders. Wet and

L
iving in Australia comes with a guarantee of wild and extreme weather – scorching hot and dry one year, then unpredictable, severe storms and flooding the next. Living on the Sunshine Coast we are not immune from the impacts of harsh natural disasters. Cast your mind back to the tail-end of Cyclone Debbie in 2017, the devastating bushfires in 2019 and the recent storms that left a trail of destruction in late October. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has now declared Australia has entered a La Niña cycle, the official name given when equatorial trade winds – or easterly winds – become stronger, changing ocean surface currents and drawing cooler deep water up from below. According to the BOM, Australia’s weather is influenced by many climate drivers, with El Niño and its opposite La Niña having the strongest influence on year-to-year variables. They are part of a natural cycle known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which loosely operates on a timescale from one to eight years. The La Niña weather cycle typically brings higher rainfall, above-average flooding and an increase in the number of tropical cyclones. In eastern Australia, the BOM has recognised the average December to March rainfall during La Niña years is 20 per cent higher than the long-term average, with

eight of the ten wettest summers occurring during La Niña years. Of the 18 La Niña events since 1900, 12 have resulted in major flooding for parts of Australia, with the east coast experiencing twice as many severe floods during La Niña years than El Niño years. BOM data reveals the wettest years on record for Australia occurred during the strong 2010 to 2012 and 1974 La Niña events. So, what does the predicted weather cycle mean for the Sunshine Coast? Fourth-generation forecaster Hayden Walker is predicting several storms, heavy rains and at least four tropical cyclones – although they are likely to form in the far north. “Storm rains will be the highlight for December, severe at times,’’ Mr Walker says. Considered Australia’s most accurate long-range forecaster, the Bundabergbased research director and principal of Walker’s Weather has a strong association with the Sunshine Coast, with his family previously calling Peachester’s Crohamhurst Observatory home. Mr Walker has been successful in predicting many major weather events – such as cyclones Larry, Yasi, Marcia and Olwyn, flooding to the New South Wales coast during April 2015 and recent storm activity in Queensland and News South Wales. He was the only long-range weather forecaster to predict Cyclone Oswald that

Mr Walker says January will bring a series of “moderate to good” falls with heavier but isolated falls in February. “In January, the main event will be two cyclones predicted to the north, with associated strong winds and heavy rainfall. “Therefore, strong winds are indicated on the Queensland coastline,” Mr Walker says. “Severe storms are
indicated for the Sunshine Coast and southeast during the month.’’ Mr Walker predicts another two cyclones into early February, with associated flooding in the far north and continued thunderstorm activity in the southeast. As for the short-term, Mr Walker is expecting some storm-related rain from December 19 to 23, then a timely reprieve for Christmas Day, before more downpours in the days after. BOM senior meteorologist Laura Boekel says Queensland is facing a “different” La Niña event to the one that caused devastating flooding in 2011. “While I can’t comment on exactly what that will bring, I can say that last time we saw this big La Niña, in 2011, the flooding catchments were already very saturated and we were in a La Niña for a much longer period.” Ms Boekel says while she cannot give specific numbers or predict their severity, more than four cyclones are expected to form in the Coral Sea this season, as well as one or two in the Gulf of Carpentaria. “One to two of those (could) cross the coast … and with the La Niña , more likely than not, we’ll see an increase in those numbers.” She says while BOM “could not really rule anything out for this season” it urges all of Queensland to prepare for what the summer could bring. myweeklypreview.com.au

When disaster strikes, it is the hardworking and brave emergency service personal and volunteers who enter the danger zones to ensure the safety of the community. One such organisation is Queensland State Emergency Services, or SES, which is prepared for the upcoming storm season – already with some real-life experience under the belt this year. Acting regional manager for the north coast region, Peter Harkin, says locally there is a team of trained volunteers ready to go at a moment’s notice. “We’ve got teams that work in different areas all over the Sunshine Coast region, so they’re ready to go,” Mr Harkin says. “They’re trained, they’ve got their equipment ready and they’re keeping an eye on the weather.” In preparation for the season, the Kunda Park-based crew participated in a disaster exercise named Midnight Rain during November. “What we’ve been doing is training with a real focus around storm and flood
training,” Mr Harkin says. “That was … to make sure we have suitable planning in place should we need to respond to a major or a severe weather event. “It’s really around training, making sure our equipment is ready to go, exercising, planning and also too, we’re keeping a close eye on the bureau and the warnings that we’re getting.” With more than 30 years’ experience in disaster roles across Queensland Fire and Emergency and the police service, Mr Harkin has seen his fair share of storms. He says what the northern region of the Coast experienced when a major storm cell hit on October 31 proves just how important it is to be disaster ready. “We’ve had a number of storms that have moved over our region in the last couple of months,” Mr Harkin says. “That [October 31 event] has certainly been the main storm that we have experienced up here that has caused a significant amount of damage.
“We saw a number of call-outs during that Saturday night, Sunday and then the few days following that – mainly for trees down and damage that had resulted from trees down.” He says the Sunshine Coast team has also been called to several responses across wider southeast Queensland. “Our crew were also involved in the clean-up for that same storm on the 31st that struck the Ipswich, Springfield and Logan areas. “Our teams were deployed to go down once we finished our clean-up to assist with the clean-up down there, which was a huge effort. “There were teams from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and New South Wales that assisted in the eight-day clean-up of several thousand houses.” While the SES plan for a variety of situations, Mr Harkin says it is important residents do their bit to keep safe. “We encourage people to have an emergency plan and an emergency kit and even and evacuation kits. “For us at our house, we’ve got a bit of a plan of where we’d go to if things get too bad. “After storms we encourage the community, don’t go near floodwaters, don’t play in floodwaters, particularly if you’re driving – if it’s flooded forget it. “Stay away from storm dams, drains or weirs and if you come across any power lines down, stay away, warn others to stay away and call the energy company, if you know who it is, or call triple zero.” Mr Harkin says if after a storm you have damage to your roof or home, or trees down to call the SES on 132 500 or visit ses. qld.gov.au. SES is a not-for-profit, community, volunteer, emergency service organisation that is supported by state and local governments. The organisation has approximately 5000 active, unpaid members who perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR STORMS Sunshine Coast locals are being reminded to do their part to ensure their homes, properties and businesses are prepared this storm season. Local Disaster Management chair Mayor Mark Jamieson says in the wake of the October storm, locals should not be complacent. “Before the next severe storm hits, I urge you to ensure your household and/ or business are prepared. Please have plans in place to cope with the unexpected. No matter how accustomed to storm season you may feel – don’t become complacent.” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services deputy commissioner Mike Wassing says when it comes to storm preparedness, there are several simple steps everyone can take to minimise the impact on homes and properties. “Be sure to clear out backyards and gutters, prepare an emergency plan and educate your children on storm and floodwater safety,” he says. “You may be isolated by a severe storm, flood or cyclone for several days without electricity, food or water – make sure you have an emergency kit.” Emergency kits should include enough food and water for three days, medication, baby supplies, toiletries, a first aid kit, portable radio and torch with spare batteries, mobile phones and chargers and important documents and cash in waterproof bags. A mobile phone is a lifeline for victims of domestic violence, yet it’s often the first item to be destroyed to prevent the victim seeking help. A Mooloolaba man is calling on the community to donate their old, unused mobile phones and help save lives. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

n the lead-up to Christmas, a local initiative helping victims of domestic violence is calling for people to donate their old mobile phones. DV Safe Phone encourages people to dig unused mobile phones out of their bottom drawers and into the hands of domestic violence victims. The initiative launched in April when Mooloolaba man Ashton Wood found old mobiles during a COVID-inspired house clean after travel for his business IC3 solutions ceased. “I found that I had some spare time on my hands, which was usually spent going to airports and waiting for planes,” Mr Wood says. “My partner and I did a clean-up at home – we filled the car with items to donate to charity. “That night, in early April 2020, it was announced that all retail shops were shutting down, due to COVID-19 lockdowns, so we had a car-load of items to take to charity and no place to take it.” Unsure what to do, Mr Wood called Janine Lee from Domestic Violence Business Solutions to see if she knew of any

drop-off points. “Janine told me that domestic violence victims in Australia are in desperate need of working mobile phones right now,” he says. “When I offered up my spare phone, Janine said ‘Ashton, your old phone may save a life’.” Realising there was an opportunity to expand this idea, Mr Wood began DV Safe Phone, engaging local company King IT as a drop-off point and to test donated phones. Add to this the additional strain and increased domestic violence through COVID-19 and we have a perfect storm for a major increase in domestic violence and abuse through this 2020 Christmas period. “It’s such a simple idea with such a powerful outcome. Data from real estate group CBRE show that the Sunshine Coast’s median house price increased by 3.8 per cent in the year to June 2020; in comparison, the Gold Coast recorded a 3.1 per cent rise, while Brisbane saw 1.3 per cent growth.
“This is a really exciting time to be an investor. There’s never been a market quite like this,” he says.
The Coast is stealing the show but all of South East Queensland has proven remarkably resilient throughout COVID. In fact, Westpac and ANZ economists revised their early forecasts and, in September, Westpac issued new predictions of an unprecedented 20 per cent increase in property prices over the next two years – the highest in Australia.
So, why has the Coast fared so well? Dwyer says there are three reasons. “Firstly, it was already in strong growth mode: growth for houses has been tracking at seven per cent,” he says. “The region is also benefiting from major infrastructure funding, with projects such as Maroochydore’s new CBD, an international runway and the largest health precinct in the country.” And, of course, there’s the population boom, driven in part by interstate buyers who are leaving the big cities and embracing remote working. According to council forecasts, we can expect more than
8300 new residents every year for the next 20 years, adding pressure to a rental market that’s already incredibly tight. One of the worst traffic congestion spots in the heart of the Sunshine Coast could soon be eased. The state government is weeks away from finalising a business case to upgrade the Mooloolah River Interchange at Mountain Creek, used by 60,000 cars a day. The major convergence of the Nicklin Way, Kawana Way and Sunshine Coast Motorway is a notorious traffic bottleneck. After 18 years on the drawing board, a detailed business case will be finalised this month for the project, which is anticipated to cost about $430 million. Its key features include widening the Sunshine Coast Motorway from two lanes to four lanes between the interchange and Kawana Way.
DREDGE NEEDED ASAP Mooloolaba’s fishing industry is warning of job losses after raising increased concerns about boats running aground and dangerous access to the Mooloolaba Harbour due to a buildup of sand. “This should be safe harbour with safe access, but the sand bar has been allowed to grow at the entrance to the harbour and it’s putting lives and jobs at risk,” MP Fiona Simpson says. “The big dredge needs to be Fiona Simpson and Gary brought up from Brisbane to fix Heilmann with Neville and Helen this as a matter of urgency.” Rockliff

USC GRADUATE HELPING SHAPE THE COAST A top-achieving University of the Sunshine Coast civil engineering honours graduate who received one of the first Thompson Excellence scholarships to support her studies is now working with a global firm to upgrade railways and roads on the Coast. Palmwoods local and 2014 Suncoast Christian College OP1 student Naomi Joyce, is a graduate engineer with Arup, which has more than 15,000 professional and technical specialists working across 140 countries on built environments ranging from stadiums to renewable energy. “I’ve been working on several large local infrastructure projects such as the Beerburrum to Nambour Railway Upgrade Project and the design of pavement rehabilitations for the D’Aguilar Highway, Beerburrum Road and Caloundra Road,” she says. “In 2019 she studied in Fiji and interned in Vanuatu after receiving a prestigious Australian Government New Colombo Plan scholarship. “Recently, I have been able to continue my involvement in Engineers Without Borders projects in Vanuatu through Arup.”

Sunshine Coast start-up Leakster will receive $99,400 to help them scale up and grow their business. Leakster founder Sara Richardson will use the federal grant to establish a trial project for their new technology to help save water by identifying hidden, underground leaks in water pipes. The project will focus on deploying real-time autonomous water pipeline condition monitoring technology, providing utilities with accurate information on the location and size of pipeline leaks. “Leakster is trying to tackle one of the biggest global issues – reliable access to clean drinking water,” Ms Richardson says. “By identifying leaks before they develop into bursts, our technology helps to save thousands of litres of water.”
WHEN NAGA MET INDAH Australia Zoo has made great progress in its effort to breed endangered species, welcoming its latest, Naga the Komodo dragon, an adult male from Prague Zoo as part of the regional breeding program of the Australasian Species Management Program. “It is not breeding season until next winter, however, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce Indah [the zoo’s female adult Komodo dragon] to Naga in the hope that they will become familiar and Indah will be more receptive for mating when the time comes,” Robert Irwin with female Australia Zoo’s Nick Kuyper says. ACCIDENTS LEAVE FAMILY OF NINE HOMELESS, BABY BURNT It’s a tough time for one Sunshine Coast family after two accidents left them homeless, with dad and baby hospitalised. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
A
Sunshine Coast hinterland family of nine has been left homeless and camping at Maleny Showgrounds, with their baby badly burned, in two heartbreaking accidents only weeks before Christmas. The Todd family has lived in the Maleny area for 10 years and were about to set off on a dream trip around Australia with their seven children, ranging in age from 15 to one. They had spent years custom-building a motorhome, fitting it out with enough seating and bedding for their tribe of kids and were set to depart on October 14. David Todd was sitting in the driver’s seat arranging insurance with RACQ, when a truck allegedly smashed into the back of the motorhome and wrote it off, 30 minutes before they were due to depart. According to mum, Belinda Evans, the driver had neglected to close the tailgate on his truck and it swung open, smashing in the back of the $30,000 motorhome and causing significant damage. “We worked three-and-a-half years to custom build our motorhome,” she says. “You can’t buy motorhomes like that because we need so many seats. It took a
determined it would only pay $15,000 – not enough for a new motorhome – and they faced a long wait for the money. When My Weekly Preview sat down with the family at Maleny Showgrounds, they were clearly under a lot of stress, but welcomed the opportunity to share their story and photos of the incident.

NEWS unsettling series of moves for the children and say the promised generosity ran out after three weeks. They ended up at Maleny Showgrounds and had spent the previous three weeks weathering severe storms and living in a borrowed camper trailer, kindly offered by Mark Porter of Maleny hardware and rural supplies store Town and Country. “Mark from Town and Country gave us some mattresses and the trailer and came around first thing in the morning and set the whole thing up to get the kids off the ground,” Ms Evans says. Things went from bad to worse when little Vincent, who turned one on December 16, pulled a pan of hot oil onto himself while David was cooking breakfast for the family, suffering second-degree oil burns from his chin to his chest, down his left arm and on his right foot. “We were momentarily distracted, talking about the insurance,” Ms Evans says. “We would normally never take our eyes off him. I ripped his shirt off and threw him under the tap. His skin started peeling off and he was beside himself, crying and pulling at his skin. He didn’t know what was going on. We went straight up to Maleny Hospital and they put him in the shower, wrapped him in cling wrap and gave him pain relief. We were then taken by ambulance to the Mater in Brisbane.”
Vincent at the Mater Hospital, Brisbane For Mr Todd, it was one trauma too many. Suffering from a painful hematoma that had turned septic and left a gaping hole in his side, the loss of his home and now this, he broke down. “I’ve had seven kids and not one has ever been injured or burned,” he says, close to tears. “I blamed myself. I was trying to take a load off everyone by cooking breakfast. I’ve got PTSD and my body just started shutting down. It does certain things to save you because you’re under so
much stress. I have no recollection of things that day because I just shut down.” Mr Todd was admitted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for a week, while his mother travelled from Brisbane to camp with the remaining six children. “The whole time through all of this, the kids have been amazing,” Ms Evans says. “The kids go to the skate park and they’ve made friends with different kids that have come through. I’ve had people come up to me that have stayed here and they say, ‘your kids are so well-behaved, well-mannered and kind’.” And their kindness has been returned. An eight-year-old boy the children met camping at the showgrounds who had saved up his money to buy a new scooter decided to give it to the Todd children. “I gave him the biggest hug,” Ms Evans says. “I said, ‘that is the sweetest thing. That is what makes the world go ‘round’. He was so beautiful. He comes and plays with the kids often now.” It doesn’t take long for news of this kind to spread and donations have included a playpen for Vincent so he can stay off the dirt and keep his dressings clean, meals, a bar fridge, tables and a gazebo, which was unfortunately destroyed in a recent storm. Maleny Auto Spares temporarily lent the family a 4WD and on December 10,
they took a train to Brisbane for Vincent to spend a week at the Mater undergoing skin grafts. Four family members are staying at Ronald McDonald House, while the rest are with friends and family. Vincent spent his first birthday in hospital and sadly, the family will spend Christmas back at Maleny Showgrounds. “Our kids get one good present each at Christmas, but food is a really big thing for us,” Ms Evans says. “We always plan and bake and have a beautiful table spread out. Being in a big family, to have the privilege of being able to go to the table and eat what you like is a really big deal for the kids.” Community organisations are donating Christmas hampers for the family and while they don’t have a home, they say they are happy to have each other and will make it the best Christmas they can for the kids. “Christmas will be different this year – it’s like a mystery,” Ms Evans says. “It will be a mystery prize. They’re just going to get what’s given to us this year.”

PROFILE take part in the Superstars of STEM program. Supported by the Australian government’s Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, the national program equips STEM experts with the communication skills they need to become role models. A senior lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, she is also a cofounder of USC’s Seaweed Research Group, which is working on ways to get the community interested in the restoration of seaweed forests and investigating the potential of growing seaweed at scale to feed to cattle to stop them burping methane. “Seaweeds are these amazing organisms that can do so many things for us and indeed do all the time, but are one of the least popular or least glamorous organisms,” she says. “Seaweed is something people don’t think of much, unless it’s annoying them by creating a smell on the beach or on a plate wrapped around their sushi,” she adds. Dr Campbell is concerned with the loss of seaweed forests around the world, and hopes to be able to work on ways to engage the community with their restoration. “We used to have quite extensive sargassum forests off the Sunshine Coast, but some time in the last 20 years, it has disappeared. It’s probably because of the development we’ve seen … and while sad, there is potential to develop them and future-proof them.” Like trees, seaweed absorbs Co2 and mops up pollution. It creates underwater ecoystems that provide food and shelter to fish and invertebrates and is an important habitat for many organisms. While our sargassum may have disappeared, we do have plentiful amounts of a seaweed called asparagopsis, a large fluffy seaweed that, when fed to cows,

M
arine scientist Dr Alexandra Campbell says she can see the disappointment on people’s faces when she tells them she doesn’t work with whales or dolphins. The University of the Sunshine
Coast lecturer has just been named one of Australia’s official Superstars of STEM and her mission is to get other people as excited about seaweed as she is. Based at Coolum, she is one of 60 women from around Australia selected to
stops them releasing methane gas. “We have lots of that one here,” Dr Campbell says. “I’m really interested in solutions-focused science – ways we can use our understanding of seaweed to address specific needs, particularly in the environmental and business spaces. “Seaweed has a huge potential to solve many big problems. By restoring seaweed forests, we can facilitate the restoration of other species in the sea and, because seaweed grows so rapidly, it is also a healthy option to help boost food security.” As a young girl, Dr Campbell didn’t necessarily dream of growing up to work with smelly, slimy green stuff, but she did show an early interest in all things oceanic. “I was born in the country, in Inverell,” she says. “It was a long way from the ocean. Most summers, the highlight of my year was going to the beach, having experiences with dolphins in the waves and looking at rockpools filled with crazy marine animals that stole my heart from an early age. I knew I would study marine science.” Dr Campbell began university studying environmental engineering. After six months she switched to marine science. Having completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of New South Wales, she moved to the Sunshine Coast with her husband and twin boys, who start school next year, to take on the job at USC. She could not be happier. Dr Campbell says the communication of science has never been more important. “This is a time in our history when we really need clear communication of STEM to combat misinformation,” she says. “Placing articulate experts in the spotlight will help us innovate our way out of the global catastrophes we are experiencing at the moment by making innovation and technologies more accessible to everyone.”

FUNKY NEW VENUE OPENS It has been a long time coming, and now that NightQuarter is finally open, what’s it like? WORDS: Bayley Olson.

t’s been a year of stops, starts, pauses and changes. NightQuarter, the award-winning street food, night market and entertainment destination, originally due to open in early 2020, has experienced all of that. But finally in November it opened, with arms up and out gifting us a vast flow of entertainment options. Inspired by European night markets,
NightQuarter combines culture, cuisine, arts, crafts, street performers and music, to deliver an entertainment experience for the local community and travellers to immerse themselves in. NightQuarter originally operated on the Gold Coast from 2015 to early 2019, as a renowned food and entertainment destination. After much anticipation and hard yards, a re-imagined NightQuarter

was birthed on new turf adjacent to the Stockland Birtinya Shopping Centre. It’s constructed mostly out of 40 up-cycled shipping containers. While there are some areas that are open air to take advantage of the beautiful Sunny Coast home, many areas are covered by large dome hangars and awnings so you can have a great night out whatever the weather. Once inside you are in the Enchanted Garden, a lush and leafy space adorned with fairy and party lights and intertwined with vine decorations around the area. It has a giant swing, a botanical cocktail bar and vendors that offer savoury eats and late-night sweet treats. A selfie booth, vintage arcade games and retail stalls are scattered about, but it doesn’t take long before your nostrils are hit by the magnificent aromas of food. Hawker Street hosts most of the vendors serving up global tastes under a giant hangar with light installations and faux palms dressed in strings of lights. There’s everything from burgers to pizza; gozleme to dumplings; and cronuts to caramel apples. The Wagyu beef burger with chorizo and chimichurri from the smokehouse stall was a highlight. At the top of the street is the Sirromet Wine Bar and Eumundi Backyard, with the latter having its own mini-stage with live music. On a recent Friday night, local band Forrest Run performed on the VIBES stage

to a packed dining hall. There were kids dancing and heads banging as people kicked back to enjoy the indie pop tunes with a drink or two. Delicious scents of barbecued meat and Asian spices filled the air and foreshadowed the range of food options. For the kiddies and young at heart, a mini sideshow alley awaits complete with carnival games, dodgem cars and a teacup ride. As the precinct filled, the air buzzed with chit chat, laughter and good times. People commented on the quality and variety of cuisine, the diversity of entertainment and the venue embellishments that showed attention to design detail, like the Hollywood gold stars painted on the asphalt. Adjacent to the entry is NightQuarter Live, with its main stage, the new place for regular events. This stage sits beneath a domed roof and hosts a Jack Daniels bar, old NightQuarter art and The Gallery, a private mezzanine and bar – all in a chilled atmosphere. Last Friday the area was free to enter and a three-piece band played Christmas carols in the style of classic rock to a small relaxed crowd and onlookers in the bars above. NightQuarter is an ever-evolving festival of culture, flavour and sound and it’s happening every weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Australia’s greenest council is being investigated for allegedly stockpiling and burning toxic material without approval. The Department of Environment and Science (DES) confirmed to sunshinecoastnews.com. au that Noosa Council was the subject of an “ongoing investigation’’ that could see it fined $3 million if found guilty. A DES spokesperson said the investigation concerned Noosa Council’s “alleged stockpiling and burning of treated timber and green waste and burying of ash at Pomona without appropriate permits’’. Council workers allegedly gathered redundant CCA-treated timber, commonly used in outdoor construction including fences, retaining walls, bollards and park equipment, and burnt it at its depot off Yurol Forest Drive at Pomona. Former pro surfer-turned coach Matt Clark says Sunshine Coast young gun Hunter Andersson is the most talented young boardrider he’s ever seen. The Moffat Beach 11-year-old has raised plenty of eyebrows with his ways on the waves. “His technique for his age is pretty flawless,” Mr Clark says. “And his decision-making is more what you’d expect from someone who is double his age. “For a young kid, he’s also got a good sense of tube riding, positioning himself in the right place to get numerous barrels. “His fear factor is pretty low too. WHY TEENAGE BRAINS COULD BE SHRINKING Sunshine Coast brain scientists have made a major breakthrough in a world-first study of local adolescents’ brains. Researchers uncovered that part of the brain may shrink in adolescents who experience psychological distress in their lives. The discovery could lead to new ways of diagnosing mental disorders, using scans to find physical changes in the brain. A SPORT FOR THE AGES The Alexandra Headland surfboat crew The Expendables have many decades under their collective belts, but that doesn’t stop them hitting the waves, competing against much younger crews. WORDS: Peter Hall. the ocean. “It’s a compact group that has to perform together. We all depend on one another,’’ he says. There’s only one place for adrenaline junkie Mr Peterson and that’s in the most dangerous position in the boat – the bow. He owns a motorcycle shop – Pro Motorcycles – in Brisbane and has a passion for adventure. “I love fast bikes and rowing boats in big surf,’’ Mr Peterson says. Crewmate Mr Watt, a senior engineer with Virgin based in Brisbane, says he

eet one of the nation’s oldest surfboat crews, a veteran oarsome foursome. The Alexandra Headland crew call themselves The Expendables but are anything but. The inspirational team competes against “the youngsters’’ in the over-240s (a collective age bracket), but qualify for the over-260s (average age 65) division. This will contain more depth once interstate crews are added at the Australian Championships, to be held on the Sunshine Coast next April. The Alex Expendables are John Lawrance, 75, John Peterson, 70, Pat Watt, 63, and the pup of the crew, Paul Campbell, 60. Their sweep on a recent weekend competition was champion helmsman Steve Davies. “John [Lawrance] is so old we don’t
know if he’s taking a stroke or having one,’’ his crewmates joked when they were asked their ages. The Expendables were among 92 crews from throughout Queensland to enjoy a massive day of racing in the Navy Series carnival at Mooloolaba recently where conditions were challenging due to choppy seas whipped up by strong north-easterly winds. They finished fourth in the final behind the Maroochydore Old Boys, Mooloolaba Wombats and Alexandra Headland 240 Brass Monkeys. Another pin-up for longevity in the sport, Coolum Beach (also over-260), competed in the earlier rounds. Mr Lawrance, a retired airport manager for Qantas, says he took up the sport at age 55 and loves the camaraderie built on a team ethic and excitement of

LEGO LEGENDS As part of robotics team ‘Primed Up’, Chancellor State College students have been crowned part of Australia’s best in the First LEGO League Challenge Competition. In the competition, students engage in real-life STEM experiences and grow their critical thinking, coding and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics. The all-girl group will go to the Australia Pacific Open Championships in Sydney next year. The girls and their families are fundraising to support the team’s Sydney trip. Thank you, Leigh Robshaw, for your profile on Vicky Meyer (MWP 10/12/20) I had no idea the extent of this work going on and that during the height of COVID the IFYS (Integrated Family and Youth Service) together with Department of Housing and Sunshine Coast Council delivered services for six weeks for 306 people at the Sunshine Coast Stadium. As Vicki Meyer said: “Homelessness is an issue on the Sunshine Coast that has remained fairly hidden until this year.” Thanks, MWP for revealing these ‘hidden’ social figures to us and to Vicky Meyer and her team for doing their best to support the people in need.
I’d like to remind cat owners of their obligations. Council laws state: “Keep your cat contained at all times – cats are not allowed to roam off your property”. Why is it that nearly every night we’re subjected to noises from cats fighting outside our home? They walk all over our cars, urinate and defecate all over the place and are a general nuisance. They also kill wildlife. During the COVID lockdown earlier this year, one of our family contracted a ringworm while exercising on our back patio. The doctor stated that it would be from a cat, as they are carriers. I know that there are responsible cat owners out there. What I don’t understand is why do some people even have a cat when they don’t care enough about them to keep them safe? Please do the right thing, lock up your cat and be a responsible pet owner.

I am writing in support of Rob from Caloundra (MWP 10/12/20) who asked if we couldn’t keep more green space in Caloundra CBD. I agree entirely with him. Caloundra has a lovely mix of old and new, something that, these days, makes it bit of a rarity and perhaps even, to use that overused word ‘iconic’. There are enough grey spaces here already and waiting to be developed – I vote for preserving the green spaces.

START SOMETHING REMARKABLE Australia was an early adopter of the business incubator. Designed to help business founders determine the viability of their business idea and help guide them to success, they have received significant investment and support since the early 2000s. Sadly, creative businesses have mostly been overlooked in traditional incubator models. In response and to help cultivate a sophisticated and self-sustaining creative ecosystem on the Sunshine Coast, The Refinery was born. A joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council, SunCentral and Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance, The Refinery is the first creative incubator in the region designed for independent artists, early-stage entrepreneurs and creative industry practitioners. Conceived as a testing ground and training platform the program evolves annually; it is responsive to future trends, potential disruptions and global challenges, but most importantly takes into account how creatives practice and live in our region. Over eight weeks, The Refinery participants (known as Founders) access a network of inspiring industry leaders
through an intensive program that includes keynote speakers, workshops and mentoring sessions. The Refinery journey culminates in a public showcase where founders pitch their refined business to industry and future audiences. The first iteration was delivered at The Metropolitan (The MET); a temporary and ever-evolving space located at the new Maroochydore City Centre in 2019. In 2020, The Refinery faced disruption in the form of a COVID-19 and pivoted to online delivery. The Refinery’s visionary partners and supporters including the Regional Arts Development Fund and CQ University understand the contribution creatives and creative work makes socially, economically and culturally. Through The Refinery we support creatives to develop viable and sustainable businesses that feed the cultural capital of our region. Applications are open to individuals and groups from across the creative sector including the visual arts, screen, design, architecture, publishing, literature, advertising, media, podcasting, game development, fashion, performing arts, music, heritage and artisan craft. Over the last two years, 30 Refinery founders have graduated from the program. Business concepts have ranged from play-based learning experiences, ephemeral art and audio storytelling, to publishing and social enterprise. Ashley Robinson’s hospitality career usually sees him working through his birthday, but one year he was remembered with a big surprise.
Sami Muirhead reflects on the year that was and is more grateful for the little things – family, friends, fresh air and Mariah Carey’s Christmas carols.
ecember has always been a big month for me in my work life in hospitality but also because I am a December baby, so it has also meant a few things to me from my earliest memories. Holidays, food and transport are probably the three significant things as my birthday always fell in the last week of school, so holidays were always prominent. School break-ups, particularly in the early days at Eudlo, meant plums, watermelon and as much ham, prawns and Wimmer’s soft drinks I could inhale at Grandma’s house at Maroochydore over the holidays. Transport was always a December thing as well. I got my first pushbike in 1960, but the real highlight was a purple dragster in the mid-60s when they first came out – three gears and streamers. I thought it was Christmas on that birthday. I got my first racing bike from Turnbull’s sports store in 1970 and progressed to a motorbike around 1974 when everything changed. I got my licence in a 1961 VW to add to the dirt bike and a whole lot of new friends, as I was one of few that had a car and bike at the start of
senior high in 1975. My spending on petrol went up and my grades went down that year, but I did have a lot of fun. As I got older and became ensconced in the hospitality industry, birthdays and holidays became less significant, as I was always working and over the last few years old mate and I haven’t even exchanged presents for birthdays as it is just another day. This year though, she kept going on about getting me a present and I told her unless it was a Ducati not to worry about it. A couple of years ago I was going to buy a Ducati from my mates at Sunstate, but financial circumstances changed dramatically so that plan was canned, but occasionally I pretend to own one by borrowing one off them for a weekend. So as the big day got closer, she was still on about my present so I held a slim hope that come the big day there would be a red bike in the driveway. The day arrives and my present was a red Ducati in the driveway, unfortunately though it was actually a framed photo of one that I borrowed? Got to love her sense of humour – not. Hope you have happy holidays.

ave you seen the Christmas tree decoration getting around that is a roll of toilet paper and says ‘2020’? It sums up this strange year. I am joining that annoying trend and acknowledging we are #grateful. I am more thankful for the basics this year: family, friends and fresh air. I am cringing as I write that corny last line, as I am a greedy little pig who has usually melted her credit card by this stage of the season buying gifts, booze, and bucket loads of cranberry sauce. Anyway, my point is that 2020 has whipped my greedy backside. I will never forget police roaming my local beach at the height of coronavirus to check we were ‘allowed’ to be there. I never thought I would be fearful for my parents’ and kids’ health, as we all watched the pandemic spread. I never thought I would be homeschooling my children. Please never let that debacle happen again. I never thought I would be isolated for everyone’s safety at my radio job and we would be broadcasting by ourselves, doing our best to keep everyone’s spirits up when we were terrified ourselves.
I lost one of my best friends as well as my dad in the middle of the pandemic and we couldn’t give either of them their final send-offs. This was simply strange. Now we are grateful to be able to hold a funeral. Dad always wanted a big send-off. As I was putting a star on our Christmas tree with my Dad’s name on it, I realised I have not accepted the fact he is gone forever. Lex had chest pain so thought he would catch a bus to the hospital where he very sadly had a massive heart attack. I am still chuckling to myself that Dad caught a damn bus. Who does that? Plenty of us have similar stories of losing loved ones this year. Heaps of friends have lost their jobs this year. Others cancelled their wedding or their overseas trips. One Grandma I know has waited eight months to meet her first granddaughter. It has been a big year of emotions for everyone. So, sit back and suck in that fresh air this year. I will be suffocating my children with endless hugs as we wear our matching Christmas pyjamas and belt out Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You. I hope Christmas is special for all of you.

ith Christmas one of the busiest times of the year for animal refuge centres, it seems the Sunshine Coast is understanding the message to not gift pets for Christmas. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge president Penny Brischke says while this Christmas the organisation is seeing a high influx of animals, the majority of them are coming from regional and rural
town across Queensland. “We have the better part of 100 animals in our care at the moment; that’s a high number for us,” Ms Brischke says. “Christmas for SCARS looks like we are truly into the cat and kitten season. She says one of the biggest causes of these influxes is people not understanding the importance of responsible ownership. “The Sunshine Coast over the last couple of years seems to really have got the message about not gifting animals for Christmas, being really responsible,” Ms Brischke says. “The challenge is some of those other [regional] areas and that’s where we’re getting the influx now.”
She says another challenge locally is people needing to surrender animals due to the current housing shortage and lack of pet-friendly rentals. To help give each animal a happy Christmas, SCARS is running its All I Want for Christmas campaign. Ms Brischke says it is an opportunity for people who may not necessarily be able to adopt a pet to help do their part. “It’s basically about picking a gift off the wishing board for a certain cat or dog and then donating the money. “They start at $5, because we wanted them to be kid-friendly, and they go up to $150 for people who want to make bigger donations.” Gifts can be anything from toys to helping cover costs for heart worming or other medical care. Ms Brischke is hoping all locals can find a way to help this festive season, whether through donations, volunteering, foster caring or adopting an animal. She says handful of animals have been in care for more than 100 days, some up to a year. local politician is calling for residents to take the time to consider their mental health as 2020 draws to a close, no matter how “tough” they are. Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson is urging everyone to speak out about their feelings. The call comes after a recent community catch-up where she witnessed a particular theme in people’s response to the question “how are you?”. “It’s been a tough year for many, and I am seeing more and more people becoming increasingly vulnerable,” Ms Simpson says. “These are stories you may have heard as people share about the angst and grief they are experiencing of being separated from loved ones due to COVID restrictions or family breakdown or both. “There are also stories of job losses or even the pressure of work taking them a long, long way away from their family and home.” Ms Simpson is concerned about the stories people are not sharing and is hoping to encourage people not to be “too proud” to make contact. “Some of these stories of struggle and distress aren’t being spoken out loud as people suffer in silence

END OF AN ERA AS SUNCITY TENPIN TO CLOSE After 41 years, plenty of memories and a fair few strikes, Suncity Tenpin in Alexandra Headland is closing down. Owners John and Sue Griffin bought the block of land on Mari Street in 1979, building the venue which has become a Sunshine Coast tenpin bowling icon over the past four decades. The property has been sold to local company Cube Development, who will likely redevelop the space into a residential apartment block. No closing date has been set for the bowling alley at this stage, with the venue to remain open for now.

The Financial and Cyber Crime Group’s detective inspector Vince Byrnes says with most of us expecting parcels at this time of year, it is important to look out for phishing and website scams. “A type of phishing and fake website scam is where scammers use the name and
branding of well-known delivery companies to send fake ‘missed delivery’ notices to potential victims,” he says. “These can even appear in the same message stream as legitimate company messages as scammers can ‘spoof’ phone numbers. “Always think and check before you click a link. year’s worth of work has paid off for Maroochydore VIEW Club as it collected final donations at its last luncheon of 2020 recently. “As part of a network of about 500 clubs throughout Australia, we have been able to contribute to the education of many disadvantaged children,” the club’s Lorri Carroll says. “We collected final donations for the annual stationery appeal for the Learning for Life program and had a great response. “Our club members… have sorted out the donations and taken them a central point for packing then distribution to students on the program so that they can start the new year with confidence and on an equal footing to get the best out of their education. “In many cases this sponsorship of a child benefits the whole family.” Maroochydore View Club meets on the fourth Friday of each month and will resume in January 2021 at the Maroochydore Surf Club. “[We] will continue in their efforts to give many children a brighter future,” Ms Carroll says. TRIO’S WINNING PLAN TO SAVE LIVES

t all started with a simple video clip that became a major obsession. Now three St Andrew’s Anglican College students plan to revolutionise the use of shark nets after winning the national final of the young entrepreneurship program Future Anything. Year nine students Kiavesh, Ethan and Byron have developed Aquashield, a prototype and business model to replace shark nets with an alternative and sustainable design that is reliable, easy to maintain and built with quality materials to last a lifetime. “I’ve had a great passion for helping the environment ever since I watched my first David Attenborough documentary; it made me realise how amazing the planet is that we’re living in today,” Kiavesh says. “I was watching an episode of Shark Week on the TV and saw these terrible images of sharks, rays, turtles and dolphins tangled in shark nets. “I sat down with the team and discussed the problem with them and after doing loads of research and analysis we all agreed that this was going to be the more interesting [problem] to solve.” The innovative design of Aquashield uses magnets, similar to those used in

After researching, building a prototype and developing a business plan, the St Andrew’s team were one of more than 40 to pitch their idea in Future Anything’s Activate program. The team progressed through the rounds and semi-finals, eventually pitching their business idea in
the grand final live on YouTube, winning $2000 to help kickstart their business. “We plan to follow our proposed timeline by first receiving support from local conservation groups,” Kiavesh says. “We’re going to do a fair amount of work during the holidays, and hopefully install this product in Australia and eventually the world.”
After a year when even actors who don‘t want to be paid couldn’t get work, Coast live theatre is set to bounce back big time in 2021. As if to put paid to the year, The Lind at Nambour was packed with Coast theatre alumni for its 75th anniversary on Sunday, December 6. Included in the all-star knees-up were members of Caloundra Chorale and Theatre Company. While there’ll be plenty of dramas and comedies sprinkled throughout 2021, including BATS’ February one-act Edythe Brook Cooper finalists, there’ll also be at least a couple of blockbuster musicals in the first half year. Coolum Theatre Players will strap on their rollerskates for the April 16 opening of the sparkling Xanadu. Jenny Bowyer has won the lead part of Kira and as if the acting-singing demands of the role aren’t enough, Jenny spends about 90 per cent of the show zipping about on skates. With the cast of 13 skating their hearts out, the season at the Coolum Civic Centre will run until April 25. The musical will be codirected by the big talents of Jesse Hana Ellison and Chris McMahon.

value them as you expect or desire. Giving to your children is also fraught. Make sure that each child is given the same opportunity to make a claim on that which you are offering. Also make sure that your children do not feel they must take what you are offering in order to make you feel better. It is something of a phenomenon that when people retire or move house – often to downsize – a major clearing out of possessions occurs. It is also notable that as we age, we are usually keen to streamline and reduce belongings. You may have experienced this and acted to significantly minimise your possessions. However, life in a consumer-focused society, along with the pleasure of acquisition and the reluctance to let go of good quality or useable items, leads to a sneaky build-up of STUFF. An annual clear-out is a great idea and there is no better time than Christmas. It is the junction between the close of one year and the beginning of the next; an opportunity for a fresh start. Make this Christmas one of giving. Give away all the extra possessions in your life that are causing clutter and not giving you pleasure. Soon enough, after your “out with the old” there will be an “in with the new” starting with the bounty that Christmas brings. Happy clutter-free Christmas! Look into each cupboard category – linen cupboard, plastic containers drawer, gift wrapping box, elastic bands container (the ones on the bottom will have lost their stretch and recoil capacity!), the bookcase, the might-beuseful jar of nails, the tool box – and from each group remove and delete a minimum of one item. Remove three items if you believe you deserve your smugness as a hardline declutterer. I often quote Marie Kondo’s book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Her bottom line for keeping an item is that it must give you a sense of joy. If not, sell it or give it away. Beware of passing on your nowunwanted items to others. They may not

The quilts go to Wishlist and they supply the donations to hospitals, who are so grateful.” Although she is not entering the Christmas lights competition this year, Ms Appleton says the village is sparkling with the addition of everyone’s garden lights. “The village lights are looking beautiful and there is a lovely feeling of celebration here at the moment,” she says.

Varicose veins are common. They can be unsightly and may ache. Sometimes they cause bleeding, blood clots or skin ulcers. Smaller varicose veins can be treated with a process called sclerotherapy. Larger varicose veins require ablation or surgery. Thermal ablation is a keyhole technique that heats the main superficial vein using radiofrequency energy. At the same time the varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. The technique is undertaken as a day procedure in hospital under a light general aneasthetic. Bandages, which are applied at the conclusion of the procedure, are removed the next day and compression stockings fitted. Time off normal activities is usually three days. Walking is important after treatment and the stocking is worn for 10 days. Discomfort is minimal. The procedure has been used by many thousands of people Australia-wide as away to treat unsightly, problematic varicose veins. Compressed nerves in the spine can often cause the feeling of an ‘electric shock’ in the arm or leg. My patients also use words like ‘burning’, ‘pins and needles’, ‘numb, and ‘dead’ to describe nerve pain. Usually the symptoms settle with time and often a trip to your GP, physio and perhaps some simple painkillers are often all that are required. Lifestyle changes such as optimising your weight, being active and giving up smoking can reduce the chances of having back and neck problems later in life. If these symptoms persist for more than six weeks, it could be a sign that things aren’t going to resolve on their own and a CT or MRI scan may pinpoint the problem. You should always do your own research into the most appropriate specialist for your condition and consult with your GP or physio. Check the internet for news and background about your spine surgeon and remember that you have the right to choose your treating specialist.

There is a new orthopaedic robot at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. I am pleased to be incorporating this technology into my practice for appropriate patients. Although robotic surgery is still an emerging technology, it is not new to orthopaedics and has been performed on the Coast for more than two years. While there are a number of potential benefits with robotic surgery, there are also potential risks. These must all be weighed up for each individual patient. There are many cutting-edge technologies that assist orthopaedic surgeons in the operating room. The use of these technologies is only a small component of what delivers a successful joint replacement surgery. There is a lot of hype in the media about the robot currently and this must be interpreted with caution. When choosing your surgeon, patients would be well advised to speak with their general practitioner or other health professionals. Also, do your own research. Keep in mind that as the patient, YOU are the customer, and you have the right to choose the surgeon you are most comfortable with.

COAST LOCALS SNAPPING UP PROPERTY BEFORE SOUTHERNERS New research reveals Sunshine Coast locals are in the best position to buy local residential property and are getting in well before the expected southern migration. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.
T
here is a perception that interstaters, lured by value, lifestyle and modern infrastructure, are already invading our residential market region, but the latest numbers from around the Coast tell a different story. The largest number of buyers are Coast residents. They’re selling and buying in the local market in droves. My Weekly Preview’s market research across 12 of the Coast’s top real estate agencies reveals that of the 477 contracts completed during the period July 1 to October 30 this year, 311 or about seven out of 10 houses, units and land sold were to Coast residents. The most active buyers came from Nambour (10.6 per cent), Caloundra (9.83 per cent), Maroochydore (8.58 per cent), Kawana (8.37 per cent), Coolum (7.32 per cent) and Buderim (5.86 per cent). Outside of the Coast, residents from 50 suburbs south and into Brisbane made up 19.2 per cent of sales while 4.2 per cent were to people living in other parts of Queensland. When you combine local residents and those within a one-and-a-half-hour drive radius, that equates to about nine out of 10 buyers. As to the interstate invaders, they made up only 11 per cent with New South Wales the largest at 5.45 per cent, followed by Victoria with 3.35 per cent. My Weekly Preview conducted a similar survey several years ago. Noel Olson, a Sunshine Coast resident since 1988 and one of the MWP’s publishers says that survey revealed virtually the same outcome. “What the data doesn’t reveal is that while the vast majority of buyers are local, many of them may have originated from outside the region but when they purchased, they would have already been living and renting on the Coast,” Mr Olson says. “Our region has and always will, and now more than ever post-COVID, appeal to our southern cousins, but most will move to the area via a rental property first.” Home Sunshine Coast principal Kate Jewry says most of the people her agency has been dealing with are already on the Coast. “We have been hearing in the media that people have been buying sight unseen, and yes, there has been some of that, but it was certainly not as prolific as what people have been led to believe,” she adds. has been dealing with several very frustrated southerners. It’s not that they aren’t eyeing off the Coast as an ideal location he says, it’s more that they can’t seem to secure a property. Locals, who know the market are right here, right now and are winning this game. “I wouldn’t say the southerners aren’t buying,” Mr Cattle says. “There is definitely strong interest from interstate buyers, but they probably transact a bit
slower as they get to know the market, where active locals are making decisions faster and seeing value because they know the market better and they are kind of beating the interstaters to the punch.” In the meantime, for unlucky new Coast residents, renting, when they can secure a place, is the go while they wait to buy. Mr Cattle has also found that some southerners, who would normally travel overseas for their family holidays, are buying into holiday-let properties. “We have seen an influx in holiday-style property; it’s a really strong part of our market,” he says. For locals, “renters are buying” Mr Cattle adds. Astute Financial’s Steve Panebiango says the government incentives are adding to the market pressure as Coast residents, who previously couldn’t get in the market, are finding now they can. “They are buying land and building because of the builders boost which has really lifted the market,” he says. “The other incentive is for first-home buyers, which for the majority are renters, and

Kate Jewry with no mortgage insurance, it’s saving them 15 to 20 grand.” Other drivers are the affordable money and the worry of getting ahead of the influx of people expected to be moving to the Coast, Ms Jewry says. “I heard from one client that one school alone has 40 new enrolments from Victoria for next year,” Ms Jewry adds. “There has been a thought pattern out there about buying before the bulk of the southern migration arrives, if they are to arrive,” Ms Jewry adds. “If COVID has taught us anything and I have experienced this with lots of clients, is that with family already here other family members are coming to the Coast as if they ever go through the whole traumatic lockdown time again, they certainly don’t want to being doing it separated from family.” My Weekly Preview | December 17, 2020 51
