Eric Blaich has turned an interest in the creative arts into a successful career that has seen him photograph famous faces and brands across the globe.

Now, the talented photographer is sharing his skills with students on the Sunshine Coast as a photography teacher at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus. Eric has always had a keen interest in the creative arts. Initially drawn to film, he completed a short course in directing after he finished university. However the more he studied the greats of cinema, the more Eric found himself intrigued by the iconic shots people associated with them. “I was always fond of movies and directing, but I became more interested in how a great director created such powerful imagery,” Eric said. Eric began studying photography in 1988 and became a photographic assistant to an advertising photographer in Melbourne, before freelancing his skills – first as an assistant, then eventually as an advertising photographer himself. From there he took a leap of faith and moved to Europe, where the plethora of opportunities saw his career take off. Basing himself in Milan, Eric had the chance to work with modelling agencies, advertising agencies and magazines in what was then hailed as the fashion capital of the world, travelling to other countries across Europe depending on the season and opportunities available. “I’ve been able to work with some very creative people throughout my career, from creative directors and production managers to stylists and make-up artists, so I was fortunate enough to work with people from all over the world from all kinds of different backgrounds. It’s definitely been an interesting life,” Mr Blaich said.

After returning to Australia in 1992, Eric and his partner (who is a successful production manager) started Daylight Studios, which went on to become one of Melbourne’s most prominent advertising photography studios. By the time they sold the business in 2005, Eric had a large roster of well-known national and international clients he photographed campaigns for, and Daylight Studios had hosted and produced shoots for a suite of big-name celebrities.

Having achieved his own success, Eric set his sights on skilling the next generation of photographers, and now teaches the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging in the new, purpose-built photography studio at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus.

“We gained a lot of exposure for our high end production values and experience in constructing sets and client liaison, hosting shoots for the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and even The Eagles while they visited Australia,” Eric said.

Eric encourages anyone interested in a career in photography to follow their passion and develop their skills to make the most of the opportunities available.

“We once spent a week building a set so a magazine could shoot in the bottom of a fully mosaic-tiled pool with Linda. There was never a dull moment.” In 2001, Eric and his partner moved to the Sunshine Coast to pursue a more relaxed lifestyle, and he has since continued to freelance his skills for national and international clients, commuting interstate for shoots.

“I really enjoy the enthusiasm of people at the start for their journey. It’s been really amazing seeing my students’ progression from the start of the year to now,” Eric said.

“With the way technology is evolving, it’s an exciting time to work in photography and the creative arts. With every new platform comes new opportunities,” Eric said. “It can be scary chasing a dream you are truly passionate about, but creative people who are good at their craft will always be in demand.”

“It’s become easier over the last few years, with technology enabling me to work remotely before COVID-19 had even hit,” Eric said. “The travel restrictions have impacted people in different ways depending on their requirements, but it has also provided opportunities for photographers to shoot to brief for clients interstate, as long as they can interpret the work.”

From the editor In writing this week’s cover story regarding Surf Life Saving Queensland’s call for volunteers, I was able to speak with Jess Appel. You couldn’t find a better proponent for the cause. As a surf lifesaver of just two years, Ms Appel’s cup overflows as she extols the benefits of joining the organisation. After speaking with Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving club volunteer Rob Flood, Ms Appel has a good chance of retaining her enthusiasm. Mr Flood has been involved with his club for 42 years and he is still enjoying every moment. Both of these lifesavers agree that surf clubs are real communities – or as Ms Appel explains, “a second family”. On a more sobering note, I have included statistics on the number of rescues performed each year. It certainly is a reminder of how much all swimmers rely on

the volunteer services. This week, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw follows up on the Coast’s Clegg triplets as they celebrate their 21st birthday. What a great story of love and care. It struck me how the parents, during the early days of childrearing, recall ignoring comments about how hard it was for them – instead addressing the comments with a heartfelt response of how lucky they felt. Additionally, we introduce new Sunshine Coast Council CEO Emma Thomas. Besides being a former aeronautical engineer, her various positions have led to developing an all-encompassing life philosophy (page 30). Reporter Caitlin Zerafa has been out and about giving recognition to people in our community. It’s a great read – enjoy. Gail Forrer

family Surf Life Saving Queensland is calling on Queenslanders to join the great Aussie tradition of surf lifesaving. It’s a great way to get involved in a healthy outdoor activity while feeling a sense of community and belonging. WORDS: Gail Forrer. Image: Aamie Cush, My Salty Life

oard rider turned surf lifesaver Jessica Appel couldn’t be happier with her sporting transformation. “I’m such a clubbie now,” she says with loads of enthusiasm. The young environmental scientist says she has always aspired to wearing the red and yellow lifesaving colours, but nothing had prepared her for the amount of absolutely fantastic opportunities and camaraderie that comes with the uniform. It was a move from Brisbane to Coolum some two years ago, that gave Ms Appel the opportunity to become a Coolum Beach surf club member. Living just a hop, skip and a jump away from the ocean, she spends every moment she can training on the boards in the mornings, upgrading her water skills and coaching Nippers. Besides that, she’s ready for weekend patrols. While she didn’t join as a nipper, she reckons the lifesaver’s calling was handed down from her grandfather, who was a volunteer at Kings Beach Met Club, Caloundra, starting from the 1940s. There’s no doubt he would be very proud to hear that his granddaughter has been nominated as Coolum Beach Surf Club’s Surf Woman of the Year entrant. Still, Ms Appel explains the impact of her involvement with the club, doesn’t nearly reflect what a really great experience being a club volunteer is. That’s something that Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is really hoping to get

across to anyone who loves the beach, because right now they seriously need more people to get involved. A national membership recruitment campaign, Our Club is Your Club, launched recently to engage a new generation of surf lifesavers to sign up to a surf lifesaving club. The campaign showcases the community and family feeling of being part of a surf club and the important work volunteers do each year in keeping beaches safe. With millions of visitors flocking to Queensland beaches every year, volunteer surf lifesavers are vital. Last season they saved more than 750 people, performed 78,748 preventative actions and 14,171 first aid treatments. SLSQ membership services manager Jamie Findlay says all clubs are more than open to welcoming new members. “Whether you’re a past member looking to get involved again or a completely new member, we are encouraging everyone to join,” he says. “There are plenty of opportunities on and off the beach for members of the community to get involved in their local surf lifesaving club. “It’s a great way to meet other people, gain new friends and become part of a family.” Surf lifesaving clubs are hubs for the community and deliver more than just an on-beach safety service, offering training, education, recreation, a place to socialise and give people a sense of

purpose and belonging. Surf lifesaver Rob Flood, a 43-year veteran of Dicky Beach Surf Club agrees. He says his opportunities have included, first aid, radio operator, IRB driver and crewperson, water safety, and more. He is currently the youth coach. The club was established in 1950 and throughout its history, the club’s vision of zero preventable deaths, has never altered. Additionally, he enjoys the diversity of club members. He says that no matter your job, status or age, once you are in uniform, everyone is the same. He also says there is a job for everyone there, even if you are not up for a patrol. “You can help out at carnivals,” he says. “Or do some fundraising – if you get your radio certificate, you can patrol from the tower.” Established in 1950, Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is a non-profit community service organisation. Besides emergency rescue and medical services, volunteer members provide the following community services: – Preventative programs to ensure beach visitors avoid danger (surveillance, safe swimming area, shark alarm, identification of rips, stinger sweep, and

first aid); – Surf safety information through community education programs; – Youth development programs; and – Healthy lifestyle programs. Mr Flood says the volunteer age range is from about six years to people in their eighties. As Ms Appel says: “If you are considering it – do it, give it a go. I guarantee you will find a place for yourself there.”

CLUB HISTORY From humble beginnings, when the first official rescue was recorded on a Queensland beach in1909, SLSQ, which was formally established in 1930, has developed into a groundbreaking and highly innovative organisation. SLSQ has 57 established surf lifesaving clubs with members patrolling 8000 kilometres of the Queensland coastline. More than 34,000 Queenslanders are volunteer members of a surf lifesaving club and more than 462,000 are a member of an affiliated supporters club.

SUNSHINE COAST LIFEGUARD TAKES OUT NATIONAL AWARD Local residents and visitors to Kings Beach can be rest assured one of the best lifeguards in the country will be keeping a watchful eye over them after Sunshine Coast lifeguard Corey Jones was crowned Lifeguard of the Year at the Surf Life Saving Australia National Awards of Excellence this month. Corey, 34, first became a lifeguard when he was 17. Now based full-time at Kings Beach and a crewman for the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, Mr Jones says he was thrilled to receive the award. “I’m pretty stoked because this is the first professional award I’ve won within my workplace,” he says.

“It’s really nice to know all my hard work and helping out with the young guards has paid off.” Corey first developed a passion for beach safety as a nipper and estimates he’s performed hundreds of thousands of preventative actions during his service. “Every day is different which is exciting and it’s a great job to keep fit and healthy,” Mr Jones says. “The Caloundra bar is a common place for the bigger rescues and we get everything from kite surfers to boat rollovers. “Working together as a team with all the emergency services is a good feeling and it’s great when everybody gets to safely go home at the end of the day.” Sunshine Coast Council economy portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the council’s $5.5-million investment in

A lifeguard is paid, usually by a local council or private entity, whereas a lifesaver comes through the tradition of the voluntary Surf Lifesaving Association, and does voluntary lifeguard duties on weekends and holidays. Lifesavers belong to clubs (they’re sometimes dubbed ‘clubbies’) and wear the red and yellow colours.

ESSENTIAL WATER SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

Nippers start at six years old, but water skills can be taught at a much earlier age. Royal Lifesaving Australia highlights the importance of children’s water safety with their Keep Watch campaign. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that drowning is the number one cause of death in one, two and three-year-old children (ABS 2019). Each year The John Wallace Swim School (Caloundra Aquatic Centre) hosts the National recognised SwimSAFER Week, where they provide lifesaving skills and rescue scenarios throughout November 16–21. The aim is to provide lifelong safety skills and water education to students and parents and to ensure to implement these vital skills all year round. Their learn to swim program caters for children as young as eight weeks of age through to the junior development squads. Mr Wallace says he was always delighted to hear how swimming lessons had saved a life from a mother whose family had attended lessons. “Sofie and her two-year-old daughter, Tilsa (pictured) were cleaning their home pool area fully clothed. Tilsa was at the other end of the pool and reached down to grab a leaf out of the pool and fell in head first. Her mother, Sofie was at the other end of the pool and by the time she got to her, Tilsa had already popped her head up a for a breath and had turned to face the wall and started swimming towards the wall,” Mr Wallace says. lifeguard services this financial year helped retain skilled lifeguards such as Mr Jones. “We are really fortunate to be able to recruit and maintain some of the very best lifeguards in Australia to ensure everyone can safely enjoy Sunshine Coast beaches and its surrounds throughout the year,” Cr O’Pray says. “Council also recently launched a new beaches page on our website, which features an interactive map highlighting the locality of both patrolled and unpatrolled beaches, which is crucial for people when deciding where they should swim, which at all times, should be between the red and yellow flags.” Division two councillor Terry Landsberg congratulated Mr Jones for his stellar achievements. “Corey is well regarded within both the local surf lifesaving and wider Caloundra community and we’re pretty fortunate to have someone of his calibre based right here on the Coast,” Cr Landsberg says. Life in aged care could become a lot cooler thanks to a new research project led by the University of the Sunshine Coast and Griffith University. Researchers will investigate the impacts of greenery, like shrubs and trees, on aged-care facilities and their residents, and use this information to develop a model Heat Adaptation Plan for partner UnitingCareâ€™s Queensland facilities. Researchers will use a $127,493 Queensland Department of Environment and Science grant for a joint research project named Green Infrastructure for Mitigating Heat Stress in Aged Care Facilities.

LUCKY SWIMS FREE Lucky the green sea turtle has been released back into the wild with the help of carers and Queensland water police. The one-year-old was found stranded and lifeless on Stradbroke Island and rushed to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to treat injuries to his flipper, shell and his head. After a few days in intensive care, he was transferred to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast to continue his recovery. Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital’s Dr Rosie Booth says it is incredibly rare to see a sea turtle of this size. “Little Lucky is a yearling green sea turtle that got left behind from last year’s hatchlings. Normally he would have caught the East Australian Current to South and Central America with all his brothers and sisters.” Due to his size and age, water police came in to help release Lucky offshore.

Students from Coolum State School, Buderim Mountain State School, Maroochydore State High School, Buddina State School, St John’s College, Immanuel Lutheran College, Chancellor State College and Pacific Paradise State School volunteered as part of the annual Schools Beach Clean Up between November 2 and 16. Single-use plastics – including plastic food packets, plastic straws and plastic takeaway drink cups – were the most common items found. Maroochydore State High School year seven student Scoute Myer (pictured) says she is surprised by the amount and variety of rubbish they found. “We found a huge bolt and we also found tissues and clothing items,” she adds.

Sunshine Coast Council is coming down hard on residents who illegally clear or damage trees in council-managed reserves. The council has received 123 complaints for illegal tree removal since January 2020, with six serious matters across the region. In October, a Mudjimba couple was fined $12,000 in Caloundra Magistrates Court and ordered to pay $9272 in restitution costs after illegally clearing native trees in the bushland reserve near their property. The council has also responded to an additional four matters in Pelican Waters, Bellvista, Little Mountain and Coolum. If you notice suspicious vegetation damage call 5745 7272.

HAPPY TRAVELLER Life has been quite an adventure for Buderim author Dr Christine Velde, which she shares in her latest book. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

hose were the days. While history records free education, cheap housing and big backyards as features defining the glory days of baby boomers, as always, there is another side to the story. Born in South Australia, Dr Christine Velde left school at 15 years old and married at 19. “That’s just what you did in those days,” she says. “You were encouraged to get married. Even so, Dr Velde says she has no regrets. “It’s just the way it was.” In quick succession, she birthed two boys. During this time she began the initial courses that ignited her journey into tertiary education. These days, Dr Velde has retired and settled into Buderim, but the determination that led her into the academic sector has provided her with a lifetime of global jobs and travel. With two PhDs under her belt, Dr Velde gained senior employment in the academic sector. She fondly recalls that in the early 2000s, she accepted the position as academic director of a post-secondary design and business college in Shanghai, China. Her responsibilities included directing the Singapore and Beijing college

sites. As her relationship with the people and the city grew, she put her basic Mandarin language skills to the test and negotiated to buy an apartment in downtown Shanghai. “It was an amazing apartment overlooking the harbour,” Dr Velde says.

She returned to Australia in 2007 but kept her Shanghai apartment and rented it out for another decade. Dr Velde says the job was a perfect fit for her temperament and work skills. “I’m quite strategic,” she says. “I look forward and I have a vision of how I would like things to be.” This job, together with additional travel to other Asian cities and European countries, underpinned her love of travel and delight in living in foreign countries and experiencing alternative cultures. As a deep thinker, she drilled down into her travel experiences, exploring the reasons expats leave their countries of origin and how they cope with new cultures. Her investigations resulted in her book Xenotropism and the Awakening of Literary Expatriatism through Writing Memoirs. Further travel experiences led Dr Velde to write Dragonflyers, comprising profiles of 14 prominent expatriates who contributed to the development and growth of Indonesia. It also details why these people were drawn to and became attached to Indonesia. In another part of the planet, Dr Velde and her husband feel a deep attraction

towards The Middle East. Her travel blog reveals the type of adventures she is drawn towards. “Whilst in Istanbul, David and I went to a Dervish dance performance. It is based on an interesting philosopher’s teachings, by the name of Rumi. Through their dancing, the dervishes aim to reach enlightenment to haunting music played throughout the ceremony.” Life in Buderim is a happy place for Dr Velde, her husband David and Bengal cat Rajah. She is enjoying watercolour painting and is busy promoting her latest book Into the Exotic. The book highlights major turning points in her life as she reflects on her long stay in Bali and journey back to Australia. Finally, she asks: “Life is safe if you do not take a risk, but are you really living?” Dr Velde has been invited to speak at the Moreton Bay Readers & Writers Festival on June 18 and July 4, 2021.

hree birthday cakes on the same day every year for two decades. It’s not the only thing Christine Clegg has done in threes while raising triplets Matt, Riley and Tayla, who turned 21 on November 15. Each birthday, Mrs Clegg has made three cakes in the shapes of animals, princesses, trains and cartoon characters, but this year their cakes will be a little more grown up. When the Clegg family celebrates the triplets’ 21st birthday, it will be another milestone for these well-known locals. From their premature birth in 1999, weighing slightly more than a kilo each, the media has reported on all the significant events in their lives, from their first birthday to graduating from Nambour Christian College. The community has always felt invested in the progress of the family, even to the point of commenting to Mr and Mrs

Then they’d say, ‘triple trouble’ and we’d go, ‘yeah, but triple treat too’. “If anyone said, ‘oh you poor thing’ near my mother-in-law, she’d say ‘these are wanted babies; you don’t know what they went through to have them’.” Mr and Mrs Clegg endured years of disappointment with IVF until Mrs Clegg finally fell pregnant. The triplets were born by emergency caesarean at 29.5 weeks at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and brought home to Selangor’s maternity unit, where they lived for the first two months of their lives.

The first six months were a blur of feeding, bathing and nappy changing. Mrs Clegg says her husband Paul, who is head of primary at Sunshine Coast Grammar School, maintained a sense of calm and order in the house, while she rotated babies from breast to bottle and made sure the challenge of juggling all three didn’t stop her getting out of the house. “It was hard, but it was also just great,” she says. “It was really special watching them grow up and it’s special watching them hang out. They all have their interests and they’re quite different in what they like to do.” Matt, Riley and Tayla still live at home in Buderim. Tayla is studying nutrition and dietetics at the University of the Sunshine Coast and works part-time at Coles. Riley is studying a Bachelor of Business (Tourism, Leisure and Event Management) at USC and Matt has set up a mowing business and is working as a landscape gardener, with an eye to studying outdoor education. “I am the first-born triplet!” Matt says. “It’s pretty cool sharing my birthday with my siblings. We share some similar hobbies and it’s fun to do some things together, but

we’re also different in many ways. We get on well together and always enjoy finding new things to do.” Middle triplet Riley says growing up as a triplet has been amazing. “Being a triplet is reassuring,” he says. “My sister and brother were never far away, so we were never alone growing up. The three of us would always hang out and laugh together. Twenty-one years later, this hasn’t changed. We are now closer than ever.” Last-born triplet Tayla says turning 21 with her brothers is an exciting milestone. “From a young age, we always had a special bond, which I believe has helped me a lot growing up,” she says. “Growing up and presently, there was never a time where I felt alone being the only girl. We always did things together and continue to do so when we can. I don’t believe we can read each other’s minds, but I do believe a special triplet connection exists.” Mrs Clegg says the 21st birthday party will not only be a chance to celebrate, but also to honour those who were instrumental in the conception, birth and care of the triplets, such as the obstetrician/ gynaecologist who gave them the gift of their three babies and the “amazing staff” at the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit where they were cared for after their birth. “People ask if I miss them being babies and in some ways, I do, because I loved it. There was always something about each stage that I loved. Between Paul and I, I always felt there was enough of us to go around. Even those early times, when you’re just living one feed to the next and trying to survive, I’d say to Paul, ‘how lucky are we to have these kids?’”

MEET SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL’S NEW CEO New council CEO Emma Thomas is an aeronautical engineer who advocates for social justice, kindness and truth.

t’s 10am on a Thursday at Charles Clark Park on The Esplanade at Mooloolaba. The weather is warm, the sky is blue, the water is shimmering. Welcome to the Sunshine Coast, Emma Thomas. Ms Thomas decided corporate wear and makeup were not required for this photo shoot, as she wants to be herself and enjoy this beautiful spring day in comfortable clothes.

It’s an indication of the newly appointed Sunshine Coast Council CEO’s refreshing and authentic nature. Originally from Perth, Ms Thomas is taking it all in, pinching herself that her “dream job in Australia’s most beautiful location” will start on November 23. She is wasting no time learning everything she can about the region and its community. A qualified aeronautical engineer, she grew up sharing a fascination with space

and air travel with her father. That, combined with a love for maths and physics, led her to her chosen profession. Two years at university at Perth were followed by a move to Sydney University and then a job with the Royal Australian Air Force. Her first posting was at Tindal, south of Katherine in the Northern Territory where she worked on the then very new F/A-18 hornets and loved every moment. Keen to be part of the small local community, the former WA state gymnast, updated her coaching accreditations and spent many hours coaching at the YMCA. Gymnastics, she says, taught her resilience. “And it taught me courage because you have to do things, not knowing if they will work out,” she says. It was during her post at Tindal that Ms Thomas spent time in the real heartland of Australia, travelling to its remote communities and taking an interest in Indigenous culture. “Australia has the opportunity to have the conversation about history and truth-telling and understand what has happened in our country with our Indigenous people,” she says. “There are so many stories to be told and there is only benefit in learning about them.” Ms Thomas is driven by community togetherness and cooperation and high on her to-do list is ensuring accessibility and social inclusion for everyone living on, and visiting, the Sunshine Coast. As partner at PwC since May last year, Emma focused on regional economic development and inclusion and accessibility in communities, so is well qualified to lead the charge. “How we care for our community is important. We need to work together to solve this because when we all come together and do good for everyone, it makes everyone’s lives better.”

Ms Thomas has been with her husband, Peter, for almost 10 years. They share their home with toy poodles Molly and Grace. The couple love sport, especially netball and they’re keen to support Sunshine Coast Lightning. When asked if being the first female CEO at Sunshine Coast Council is newsworthy, she thinks for only a moment. “Yes it is, because it may inspire other women, especially young women starting out on their careers, to aim high. “The election of Kamala Harris, the first woman to be elected vice president of the United States, has also put the spotlight on women in leadership positions. “There’s a whole new generation of young women realising the possibilities and the opportunities open to them. And that’s a good thing.”

A STERLING CAREER Since leaving the Royal Australian Air Force over 20 years ago to join Boeing Australia, Ms Thomas has held a range of senior leadership roles working for the South Australia and Queensland governments. She has been involved in operations for aviation, rail and roads and has managed large public service organisations delivering major projects. She was director-general of Transport Canberra and City Services in the Australian Capital Territory – an organisation with responsibility for both the public transport network in Canberra and a wide range of municipal services ordinarily delivered by councils in Queensland. Ms Thomas has also been a partner at PwC since May 2019 focusing on regional economic development and inclusion and accessibility in communities.

he US election reminded me a bit of another really important election back in 1975, the great campaign for the election of prefects and school captains at Nambour State High School. Distinction by merit was its motto, but sadly there wasn’t too much distinction in my five years there. One was being made prefect in 1975. This was done by a secret ballot of the students, which probably had a bit of Donald Trump’s paranoia about its validity when I was elected. How I got elected was as big a mystery to me as most others, but I actually got up. I did wonder if maybe it was a donkey vote, a vote of protest by the masses about being made to participate so they voted for me just to show how flawed the system was. Nevertheless, I was one of the chosen ones, which meant different things to the other boys and girls who were anointed. What it meant to me was simply three things; the most important of them was morning tea with the headmistress every month. I was scared of her and I am pretty sure she wondered how and why I was there but the scones, cream and jam were

awesome. My next favourite thing was toilet duty, which I loved as I got to bust all the smokers in the toilets. Well, I never actually turned them in, but just sent them on their way as I hated smoking, not the kids. My other favourite thing was bridge duty, where we had to man the bridge over

hree things shocked me this week. It is five Fridays until Christmas. Let us just move on from this rather indigestible fact. Secondly, I found out about the most unlikely of habits from a famous singer. I interviewed Australian rock royalty, Jimmy Barnes, about his national tour next year and his new book. The tome is called Killing Time and is collection of over 40 yarns and anecdotes from Jimmy’s extraordinary life. But my big take away from this most wild and gorgeous man is the fact COVID-19 prompted Barnsey to learn some new skills, including playing the bagpipes and – wait for it – flower arranging. Okay, the Cold Chisel former bad boy is a Scotsman, so the bagpipe is not a huge surprise. But I was stunned to hear Jimmy is really good at arranging flowers in a beautiful way as a gift to give to his wife. “I put Jane through hell in our earlier years, it is the least I can do”, the rocker laughed. “But yes, I really enjoyed spending time in the garden during COVID-19 and they tell me I am really bloody good at arranging flowers so they look lovely in a vase.”

And the third piece of news that surprised me this week is the fact McDreamy is back on Grey’s Anatomy. I did not even know the medical drama was still on air. Back when it started in 2005, I watched every week religiously to see what Dr Meredith Grey and her hot doctor friends who somehow made scrubs look

Well apparently, Dr Meredith Grey has been slogging it out ever since as the show is about to release its 17th season. Why NAB would choose to close this particular branch is disturbing as many older clients don’t have necessary computer skills to use online banking and some don’t drive. As regular visitors to Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba, we were rather perturbed by Peter of Buderim’s letter (MWP, 5/11) about the proposed reduction in the number of disability parking places from 10 to four. We have disability parking permits and already experience not being able to park close to cafes. On our last visit, we had to park a long way from a cafe – if it hadn’t been an important occasion, we would have given up. Three of our group had disability permits and none of us could get a disabled parking spot. We will be sad not to visit Mooloolaba as often if parking becomes more difficult, so we hope the council reconsiders this proposal. Robyn, Bli Bli

TRANSIT CORRIDOR Why would an area that is second to none look back to an old, antique, costly tram system [light rail] that causes the Gold Coast so many problems – including environmental destruction – and discourages holiday visitors, when other options would preserve the area and increase tourism. This system also has safety issues connected with alighting on and off the trams and the intersecting with traffic. I suggest self-drive hydrogen/ electric buses could be trialled with ‘drivers’ present in the buses providing emotional and system security and acting as security guards for the patrons until the system proves itself, say in three to four years. This form of transport would also cause less inconvenience because it would be without the massive construction time the tram option would necessitate. Trams are the past; what we need is a seamless approach that people would look to, even come to the Sunshine Coast to see and want to use, to keep our beachfront as is, not wrecking our esplanades that attract so many visitors. “I’m not the sportiest person, but I’ve had a go at everything and I can hit a tennis ball and I can now bowl,” she says. “We used to play bowls on a Tuesday night and then have a social get-together afterwards, which is so much better than sitting inside watching TV every night.” Mr Feiner says they loved living at Halcyon Lakeside, but decided to take advantage of becoming one of B by Halcyon’s first homeowners “Coming in at ground level, you get the opportunity to form different groups and be a part of creating a community,” he says. He says they are looking forward to work starting on the community’s facilities, which are due to be built by April next year. Irene Baldwin made the solo move from Ireland to Australia in 1970, at the tender age of 18. With no friends or family waiting for her at her destination, she bravely boarded a ship bound for Australia, unsure of what lay ahead. “I really wanted to go to Canada because that’s where all my relations are, but in those days it cost ten pounds to travel and I was only earning five pounds per week, so I decided to go to Australia instead. But in the end, because I was under 21 the trip cost me nothing,” Ms Baldwin says. The journey to Australia was an

eventful one, and one that Ms Baldwin remembers vividly. “It was five weeks on a ship, the Fair Star, and I was seasick two-and-half of those weeks. It was terrible,” she says. Ms Baldwin became friends with a few girls on the ship and they ended up moving into an apartment together. In the most romantic and serendipitous of circumstances, just one month after her big move, Ms Baldwin met her husband. They married in 1971 and then in 1977 they spent six weeks abroad in England and Ireland visiting their families. After her husband tragically passed away in 2009, Ms Baldwin moved into Allora Gardens. Living at Allora Gardens allows her the opportunity to live the happy, productive and carefree lifestyle she so loves. n recognition of this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, students at Mountain Creek State High School (MCSHS) have been immersing themselves in the culture of the region’s Indigenous history. With a national theme of Always Was, Always Will Be, the week recognises the ongoing custodianship and close cultural

MCSHS’s international student liaison officer Fiona Howett says the students were engaging in a range of activities, including a connect-to-country walk, to learn more about the land on which the school sits. “The land where the school is was

considered the refrigerator of the area because there is a lot of food sources in the area,” Ms Howett says. “Over the years we have been slowly learning more about it and the students are becoming more hungry [to learn more].” As part of NAIDOC Week, Ms Howett was successful in applying for a grant through the National Indigenous Australian Agency, using the money to commission local artist Lyndon Davis to paint a mural in the school grounds. The mural, located centrally near the school’s canteen, tells the story and history Buderim Mountain and some of the native wildlife. Ms Howett says NAIDOC Week is a wonderful opportunity to continue educating students on the rich Indigenous history of the area but is also just as important to help continue the stories into the future. “It’s really inclusive of everybody,” she says. “The students have really enjoyed learning the stories from Lyndon and it’s really important to help carrying it on and moving it to the next generation.” Postponed from July, this year NAIDOC Week ran from November 8 to 15, but Ms Howett says the school will continue educating students year-round. “We are excited about our future projects planned for 2021 connecting our school with the traditional custodians of this land Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi peoples.”

URBAN FARM HELPS COMMUNITY GROW The Urban Farm social enterprise in Cotton Tree is attracting a great deal of attention for its organic and chemicalfree methods, permaculture principles, biodynamics and regenerative agriculture. Community garden member Joan Fitzgerald says locals and cafe owners can buy produce and dispose of compostable waste on site. “The profit[s] from this social enterprise venture go to the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre and the community projects [it is] involved with,” she says. “This includes feeding the homeless who come to the community centre twice a week, free counselling, lockers, showers, medical examinations, haircuts, housing the homeless and family support.” The gardens are at Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre. prominent Sunshine Coast beauty academy is expanding its services in a bid to upskill locals and make them work-ready. Over the past 10 years, hundreds of graduates have come from Maroochydorebased Demi International.

Owner and director Ann Donnarumma says she now offers a certificate three in both hairdressing and barbering after opening a new salon in late October. “These two qualifications are the perfect fit for the courses we have been offering over the years and a great pathway

for students looking to upskill or complete a dual qualification,” she says. “For example hair and makeup. The salon will be fully functioning to the public towards the end of November, and like our beauty and remedial massage clinics, the public will be able to receive hair and barbering services for special prices.” She hopes the new offering will help create job opportunities in the sector. “We know there are great employment opportunities for young people particularly in these industries and we are passionate about graduating job-ready people, who get real job outcomes,” she says. “Hairdressing salons are screaming out for qualified hairdressers and apprentices at the moment. We saw a gap where we could really help both employers and those looking for work.” As part of the expansion, Demi International is also offering two scholarships for new students. “We felt we were in a position to give back to the community that has supported us so well over the last 10 years.” With a passion for beauty and health, Ms Donnarumma says she loves seeing her graduates find jobs they love. LOCAL NEWS her entry piece for the Creative Generation Excellence Awards for Queensland senior visual art students. “This year has definitely had its ups and downs,” Poppie says. “It was quite hard seeing everyone back at school once Queensland’s restrictions eased, especially because I was still stuck in a different country without my friends and had to do classes online. “The beginning of COVID and having to leave Australia for four months caused a lot of stress for me, which also influenced a part of my artwork. Poppie, who plans to study a Bachelor of Arts next year, says her work represents her personal experiences with anxiety and the feeling of being isolated from everyone around her. “Seeing other people struggle with the same thing all around the world also made me realise that what I was feeling was normal and that my artwork idea was more relevant than ever.” As an augmented reality piece of art, her work features an animation, audio and a printed digital illustration component, showcasing various symptoms of anxiety and how it impacts her personally. Poppie’s work will go on display in the central exhibition at GoMA in 2021.

COMMUNITY RALLIES TO CREATE A PARK WITH A DIFFERENCE Children and adults are passionate about Peachester Park. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Peachester Park is one with a difference, where children are encouraged to “get back to nature” and use their creativity to have fun. Thanks to the hard work of passionate locals forming the Park for Peachester community group, residents were able to save the land from being sold off last year. Community group member Melissa Driscoll says the unused, freehold land,

owned by the state government, has always been earmarked for a park and locals had been fighting on and off for 30 years to have it handed over to the council. “In April 2019, a ‘for sale’ sign went up and the state government were going to auction it off for residential land,” Ms Driscoll says. She says the group worked to lobby the government, engaging local politicians and stakeholders to fight for its intended use. “We were successful in having the

land taken off the market and handed over to council,” she says. “It’s a basic piece of land; just a big area of scrub with a mown area. “We like it like that.” Eighteen months later and the “non-typical” park is being recognised for its innovation in nature and loose park play. “There is a real movement in nature play and kids getting back into nature,” Ms Driscoll says. “Our ethos is to use the park in its natural state. “The kids build ridges with logs and use vines to swing off, and they play Quidditch games with pinecones.” The park is also actively used by community groups for activities such as yoga. Peachester Park was also the final stop off for the Loose Parts Play Regional tour, encouraging children to use “loose parts” when playing to ignite imagination and creativity while actively learning. “They were amazed by our park, which has nothing in it,”Ms Driscoll says. While there is no plan to have play equipment installed on the site, Ms Driscoll says the community group is working with Sunshine Coast Council to help make the park safer and more accessible. “We would like a fence and some toilets, and maybe some sandstone blocks for parents to sit on and watch their kids.”

FUNDING BOOST FOR HELIMODS Leading Caloundra aerospace company HeliMods is benefiting from $150,000 in federal funding to help it reach new opportunities in global markets. “HeliMods has used its funding to purchase plant and equipment to manufacture large machined components used in the modification and upgrade of military and paramilitary helicopters,” Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price says. “The grant will assist HeliMods in boosting its capacity to make components with shorter lead times, increasing export opportunities into North America and Europe.” The Australian Defence Export Office was set up to provide practical assistance to small businesses and help them become export-ready. POP BY THE PANTRY The Free Little Pantry in Wurtulla is asking for donations to help those in need. The pantry was set up four years ago to give a helping hand to locals who are short on money, homeless, on a pension or struggling to feed the family. MORE THAN A PRETTY PACKAGE Members of Caloundra’s Zonta Club are busy preparing gift boxes for women doing it tough. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

he Zonta Club of Caloundra’s Shoeboxes of Love project is nearing completion, with close to 200 boxes almost ready to be sent to Australian farming women affected by drought. A member for 21 years, Joan Fitzgerald says the club has been overwhelmed with community support for the boxes, which will be sent to Drought Angels for it to distribute where it is needed most. “The community, together with Zonta Club members, have put together nearly 200 boxes – tea lovers, coffee drinkers, pampering and general Christmas goodies have been filled,” she says. “The photo shows some of these boxes, 40 in total, at To Hold & To Have after being [labelled] by Zonta members Bev Barton and Shiree Pickering.” The themed boxes are made by filling repurposed shoe or gift boxes with hand or body cream, shampoo, conditioner, tea and coffee and other small products. “They are things [that] women that are struggling don’t buy for themselves.” This project is something Zonta Club does every two years for people in need.

POLICE BRIEFS Sunshine Coast police are reminding parents of the rules around school zone parking and drop off/pick up areas. Officers regularly patrol Sunshine Coast schools to promote general safety. Acting Sergeant Sandy Atkinson says police recognise that school drop-off and pick-up times can be hectic and stressful for both parents and children and want to remind parents that school zones are designed to maximise safety. “Officer would like to remind parents that loading zones are for dropping off and picking up only and the driver must remain in the car and leave within two minutes,” Snr Const Atkinson says. Parents are being encouraged to consider parking a few streets away and walk their children to school to help reduce school zone congestion and teach children road safety skills.

REPORT IS IN ON COAST WATERWAYS The Sunshine Coast’s waterways and wetlands have been rated among some of the best in southeast Queensland. The 2020 Healthy Land and Water Report Card has ranked the region’s three coastal catchments – the Maroochy River, Mooloolah River and Pumicestone Passage – among the highest in southeast Queensland for their social and economic benefits. The report card highlights Sunshine Coast catchments are highly or very highly valued by the community, and in ecological terms, are in fair to excellent condition. Healthy Land and Water CEO Julie McLellan says the 2020 Report Card results shows people in the Sunshine Coast region love their waterways. “This is important because waterways are seen as more important than ever,” Ms McLellan says. “They reportedly have a calming, therapeutic and restorative effect on people during challenging times – including drought, bushfires, and especially COVID-19 and its ensuing economic hardship.”

Glasshouse Christian College student has been busy clocking up kilometres on her bike to fundraise for children fighting cancer, after participating in the Great Cycle Challenge. At the beginning of the year, Naarah Harvey and her classmates had an opportunity to go mountain biking.

Enjoying the excursion so much and deciding she wanted to ride more often, Naarah’s father saw an opportunity to ride for children’s cancer and challenged her to ride 100 kilometres. Her original goal was to ride the set distance and raise $500; instead she rode an incredible 150.4 kilometres and raised $1428.55.

PRINT POWER STRONGER THAN EVER Despite the world embracing the wonders of the internet, the power of a marketing campaign that features glossy print is as powerful as ever. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ay White Caloundra principal Andrew Garlandâ€™s formula for residential selling in this growing market isnâ€™t a secret, but it is one he is quietly getting on with successfully. Mr Garland uses a mix of targeted print and online marketing, auctions and solid market knowledge. Close to 90 per cent of his sales are finding success through in-room auctions, which he has been running since 2007. â€œWe are the only people regularly doing them on the Sunshine Coast, as far as I am aware,â€? Mr Garland says. He finds the buyers attending these auctions are genuine and there to bid, not just to look. They tend to be focused on the selling process in the controlled environment and not distracted by what is happening around the home, the weather or neighborhood noises. Capturing these buyers takes more than an engaging agent and online advertising. It needs the added power of print advertising. This combination makes for a powerful campaign, otherwise your promotion is limited with subtle barriers. For instance, using online presentation only, buyers are not tempted to look further afield. â€œYou are then only finding buyers who are casting their eye over say, Moffat Beach, whereas with print media, it isnâ€™t geographically limited,â€? Mr Garland says. He argues the addition of print media to online provides a much broader reach. â€œYou can put people into real estate mode when they arenâ€™t really in that mode,â€? Mr Garland also says about the add-on value of print marketing. â€œIf youâ€™re not in that mode you are probably not looking online every day. â€œWhen we commit to a print and online advertising program, it creates more buyer competition than online campaigns alone. At the end of the day, itâ€™s all about multiple buyers competing for the property, this is what drives the price up.â€? He also says, â€œWe experience these sorts of results for properties of all price ranges when we use print and online combined, whether it be $700,000 or $1,400,000. Print and online brings the crowds and thatâ€™s what generates the competition.â€? An emotional connection can easily happen when people pick up a publication with big colour photos. Unexpectedly, an attractive property, interesting layout, pleasant pool or an attractive kitchen can enthuse a passive buyer to head out to attend the propertyâ€™s inspection. It is certainly easier than

Mr Muller and his wife had been semi-looking for a new home with the plan to move some time in the new year. â€œWe have looked through (My Weekly Preview) every week for years,â€? Mr Muller says. â€œIt keeps you in touch with values and what is available out there. â€œA couple of my Caloundra friends do the same thing, going through My Weekly Preview every week.â€? Previously, when Mr Muller has found interesting properties in My Weekly Preview, he has gone online to look at all the available photos. But when he saw one particular Buderim property advertised in a July edition of the magazine, he knew immediately he had to view it. â€œWe have family up there so we thought Saturday morning we would go up there and have a coffee with them, and while weâ€™re up there weâ€™ll duck around and have a look at this place,â€? Mr Muller recounts. â€œSix days later I bought it.â€?

Mr Muller then had his Moffat Beach home to sell. It went to auction with Ray White Caloundra and sold for $2.275 million after 123 groups inspected the property and nine bidders tried to secure the beachfront home after a four-week online and print marketing campaign. â€œSome saw it online and in the Courier Mail, but plenty saw it in My Weekly Preview,â€? a delighted Mr Muller says. â€œI spent plenty of money on promotion, but it was well worth it.â€? REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella says there is not a â€œone size fits allâ€? marketing campaign. â€œWe know that we live in a digital world so searching for property online has become a very popular method of finding property and a convenient way, but I absolutely think there is still a need for print advertising,â€? she says. â€œHaving previously lived on the Sunshine Coast, that is how I came to find my property on the Coast while holidaying.â€? â€œI donâ€™t think print is dead by any means,â€? she adds. â€œI appreciate that the nature of the world we live in, that digital has become very popular, but ideally I think you would like to have a marketing campaign that is spread across a variety of channels to gain the maximum amount of attention.â€? Mr Garlandâ€™s extensive marketing strategy for the record-breaking auction sale of 31 Watson Street Currimundi at $4.85 million included four double-page colour spreads in My Weekly Preview. The beachfront property was originally expected to sell at around the mid to high $3-million mark. It attracted six bidders, with three willing to go the distance above the $4-million mark. The seller, Dr John Adkins, spent about $18,000 on marketing, which included both print and online. â€œThe overall interest from the campaign was surprising and ultimately very rewarding,â€? Dr Adkins says. â€œI was impressed by the outcome.â€? Provided there are people looking to sell, Mr Garland expects the market to continue accelerating. My Weekly Preview | November 19, 2020 49

ustralian fighter Chelsea Hackett knows a win in the upcoming Contender Series in Las Vegas won’t be enough to secure a UFC contract – she has to turn head honcho Dana White’s head. The 22-year-old will take on American Victoria Leonardo (7-2-0) in the flyweight division for a shot at the big time, with Mr White handing out contracts at his discretion through the series. Australian light heavyweight Jimmy Crute broke into the lucrative UFC in 2018 the same way. With a 3-0-1 record, Ms Hackett, from the Gold Coast, says she needed to impress White in Tuesday’s fight (early Wednesday AEDT). “It literally comes down to who he wants to give a contract to,” she told AAP. “Just winning isn’t going to do it for him and that’s what I’ve noticed that watching the last Contenders – you have to make a statement. “He wants a finish or he wants you to absolutely dominate so there’s no question about him giving you a contract.

“But I’m fully ready for it and I want to put on a show.” Ms Hackett started in taekwondo as an eight-year-old and then switched over to Muay Thai fighting, winning a world title. Turning to MMA, she had her first fight in May last year and was already eyeing the UFC before COVID-19 hit. Originally scheduled for July, the fight has been pushed back twice, while her opponent also changed. Training solidly under her father Geoff for almost eight months, Ms Hackett said she couldn’t be more ready. ‘Last year I was on such a roll with fights – I made my MMA debut at the start of last year and then the fights were rolling through,” she said. “In March I had my fourth fight and going into that I knew about Contender and we were ready to back up straight away and then COVID hit 10 days after my fight. Ms Hackett said drawcards like Rhonda Rousey, Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes had laid the platform for women to make a career in the sport. –AAP

Young gun Zac Woolfield believes he has the experience required to bring Coolum Football Club back to its former glory, after being named as head coach for the first division team in 2021. At just 20 years old Mr Woolfield is sure he holds the record for the youngest man in the job. “I’m pretty confident to say I hold the record at 20 years old which is really exciting,” says Woolfield. “It feels amazing to be given such an opportunity at such a big club, the facilities are outstanding so I’m confident I can turn it all around.” His selection comes after a troubling year for the club, where they juggled the impacts of COVID-19 and ultimately cancelled the senior men’s season. “COVID has been shocking for not only the world but coast football and Coolum in general, Coolum lost their entire senior team because of the pandemic so it was horrible to see that happen,” says Mr Woolfield. Before joining the Coolum outfit, Mr Woolfield worked as part of the coaching staff for the Sunshine Coast Fire which he believes has prepared him for this role. “Working with Gareth Thomson in this year’s Sunshine Coast Fire team has been a really good experience for myself to see the lows and highs of men’s football.” “The plan for next year is just simply to give the club an identity, we’re going to go out an attack and be a handful for every team we face next year, I’ve got some really exciting guys coming in so I’m confident we’ll be up there next year.” Mr Woolfield says.

Zac Woolfield The 20-year-old coach isn’t shy on ideas to shake up the club, planning on bringing an A-league feel to the local outfit. “I can change the club by bringing a little more structure than most Sunny Coast teams are used to, it’s very amateur so we are going to try and break that by integrating physiotherapy, injury prevention, sports science and more in-depth analysis and higher quality training sessions. There’s some really bright talent at Coolum so I’m confident we can turn them into great footballers.” Mr Woolfield has plans to start pre-season in early January.

Recent footage from Mullaghmore in Ireland on the Red Bull site suggests that wave is equal to Jaws Hawaii and Nazare Portugal. The footage of a surfer inside a barrel that looks 60–80 ft high beggars belief. Freezing cold water and MASSIVE waves. Absolute insanity for the hardcore few. The Sunshine Coast will have a huge day for waves on the weekend with buoys reading up to 2ft… yep be careful peeps. At least we are surfing in boardshorts. Enjoy what you can!
