Dr Scott Lyons says the emotional impacts of the pandemic could be long-lasting

FEAR OF POST-VIRUS FATE FUELS RACIST HATE Experts warn of a dangerous wave of post-coronavirus paranoia, anger and violence towards other races, caused by ignorance, fear and uncertainty. WORDS: AAP.

he world is at risk of a second, insidious epidemic that could fray the fabric of Australia’s multicultural society as people are plagued by fear and uncertainty over life after the coronavirus pandemic. Most people will be happy to leave the virus lockdown behind, but some are afraid to abandon the security of isolation. That fear can turn to paranoia towards people not in our inner circle. New Yorker Scott Lyons has seen it all before. His first class at university was on September 11, 2001. In the weeks and months following that horrific day, he saw how people responded when they were robbed of

their sense of safety. “The fears, the terrors and emotions that went unacknowledged – we all saw how that then led to an act of violence on other people who weren’t even of the same culture as those responsible for the attacks,” says Dr Lyons, who is now a clinical psychologist. Academics name this phenomenon ‘othering’ but everyone else calls it racism. Or sexism and ableism. Us versus them, the spine of inequality. Dr Lyons says socialised trauma, like a global pandemic, can trigger these responses. “Otherness tends to be a reaction to several factors: the unknown and fear,

desensitisation, losing our empathic capacities, and projecting the feelings of uncertainty and anger on to other people,” he says. “Seeing it on a global scale – I would call that a second, dangerous epidemic.” He fears the effects of this crisis are going to be with us a long time. “It’s like being in a car accident. “How long does the accident itself last – 30 seconds, a minute? Cuts and bruises, a few weeks to heal. Broken bones – they take about three months. “But the trauma response, the unconscious fear, the layers of lack of safety, the projections, all of these things can last a lifetime.” Dr Lyons was in Australia for a training tour on stress and trauma when the first COVID-19 deaths occurred. He missed a brief window to fly home when his house-sitter caught coronavirus, stranding him in Byron Bay. But he has continued to treat his US patients remotely, which has enabled him to compare people’s responses to the pandemic in both nations. Despite New York’s deadlier and more drawn-out experience, the reactions to the outbreak have been similar at key moments on the infection timeline. Dr Lyons points to a spike of attacks against Chinese-Australians at the outbreak of the virus. The Australian Human Rights Commission reported more racism complaints in February than during the previous year, with a third of all complaints up to May 9 relating to COVID-19. Meanwhile, the New York Police Department has recorded a fall in overall hate crime in its latest city-wide statistics but “an increase in hate and bias incidents targeting individuals of Asian descent”.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has called for a global effort to end hate speech, warning the outbreak is unleashing a “tsunami of hate and xenophobia, scapegoating and scaremongering”. “Anti-foreigner sentiment has surged online and in the streets, anti-Semitic conspiracy theories have spread, and COVID-19-related anti-Muslim attacks have occurred,” Mr Guterres has said. Dr Lyons says if left unchecked, violence against Australia’s Chinese

Identifying who is at risk of this darker response to trauma is not easy as everyone is different, with their own experiences and emotional intelligence. On the other hand, shared trauma can also lead to changes for the better. Not long after the Twin Towers came down, Dr Lyons remembers sitting next to a woman on a bus. “She turned to me and said, ‘And how are you?’ That never happens. You never say hi in New York.” People must remind themselves what it means to be human, starting from a very basic level, he says. “When you see a stranger and think ‘this person could be infectious’ – well what if that’s what they’re thinking about you?” “We’re in this together, in this fear.”

Navigating Parenting during COVID19 and beyond As restrictions ease across the country, separated parents still have many questions and uncertainties. Here’s how to navigate the months ahead:

1. Changeover In recent months, with schools and contact centres closed, parents have had to come up with new changeover arrangements. As restrictions ease, you may need to reconsider these arrangements. Start thinking about this now. 2. Remain flexible Schools may be back, weekend sports and other activities may not. Remain flexible in terms of the time each parent spends with a child or children. When making any changes, document them even if it’s just by way of email or text message. 3. The Courts For now court appearances remain via telephone or online platforms. However, the courts will have a backlog of work as a result of COVID19 and delays will be inevitable even when things do return to ‘normal’. Try to settle your matter outside of the court system where possible. We can help. 4. Family Violence It’s been on the rise since COVID19 restrictions came into place. Reach out for help if you are experiencing family violence. Contact the police, our office or a trusted third party for help.

5. Breaching Orders Just because COVID19 restrictions are easing, it does not mean the threat of infection has disappeared. If you are considering breaching an Order because of the risk of infection in another parent’s household, please speak to us first, as the courts treat breaches very seriously. 6. Child Support If you’ve lost your job or your work hours have been reduced you may be able to vary the amount of child support you need to pay. 7. Ask for help The last few months have been tough. The months ahead remain uncertain. Don’t let that uncertainty and your anxiety pave the way for litigation with the other parent. We can help you resolve the issue before you end up in court.

he Sunshine Coast’s beauty may be a visual feast, but the sound of crashing waves, its wilderness and everglades also evoke a taste for the region. These attractions are now being used in a new campaign to entice people to return to the Coast once travel restrictions relax on June 12. The Visit Sunshine Coast A Taste of Escape concept uses state-of-the-art autonomous sensory meridian response techniques to provide sensory sensations through a wide range of sounds that capture the essence of local experiences. Under the State Government’s staged roadmap to recovery, travellers will be able to visit the region from a 250-kilometre

radius, stretching from Bundaberg in the north, Toowoomba in the west and the Gold Coast in the south. Until then, day trips are permitted within a distance of 150 kilometres. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the campaign will help engage with people who are thinking about an escape after so much time in lockdown. “The A Taste of Escape microsite will feature an extensive collection of Sunshine Coast imagery as well as stories about the people and places that make our region special,’’ he says. “While we expect our wide-open spaces and natural attractions to be particular drawcards for future travellers, our campaign will be equally about encouraging visitors to support local businesses and tourism operators that will progressively open over the coming months. “It’s been an incredibly tough year for local tourism, but with the new campaign and the easing of travel restrictions, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.”

Connecting our kids Feeling isolated from her family overseas, student and au pair Monica Murray had an idea for a book that would help families in lockdown.

ne night, a few short months ago, borders were closing, and Monica Murray lay wide awake, pondering what the future would hold. As an international student she had many concerns, such as family overseas, the continuation of her studies

and the security of her part-time job (to name a few). Instead of scrolling mindlessly through social media until she felt sleepy, Ms Murray lay there thinking of the posts that had resonated with her since she decided to stay and continue her studies at the

University of the Sunshine Coast. “Use this time to do something you’ve always dreamt of doing,” was the overwhelming message. “My brain then went to ‘children’s book’, which is something I’ve wanted to do since I could write,” Ms Murray says. “Like magic, the rhymes started writing themselves in my head.” She grabbed a notebook and pen to capture the tale as it flowed seamlessly from her mind. Her inspiration? Coronavirus. “The world was going into lockdown, my university was going online and I knew I wanted to do something really productive in my spare time to make my dream of being an author come true and bring some joy back into people’s lives,” she says. “I hope this book will bring families together both for reading time and play.” The Isolation 100 for Kids is a beautifully written and illustrated eBook that gives families practical, whimsical and adventurous activities they can do together in their homes with things they already have. No trips to search through bare craft stores or having to spend hours creating something to play with. “As both an au pair and a pre-service teacher, I know how important it is for children to not only be physically safe, but emotionally safe in knowing they are being taken care of, they have someone to talk to and something to keep themselves busy with. This gives them security and a sense of purpose, similar to the needs of an adult,” Ms Murray says. With a background in advertising and digital design, Ms Murray was able to bring her vision to life in just a few short weeks. The stunning illustrations were the result of an online collaborative effort, with Ms Murray reaching out to international designers to bring her words to life. “I am tremendously grateful to my

illustrators, Ilkhom Kasimov and Muzaffar Yulchiboev, who had so much enthusiasm. “For both my writing and their illustrating, it was extremely important this book involve an array of multicultural characters – I want children experiencing isolation around the world to know they are not alone and that, through all the ups and downs, we are connected in staying safe and staying occupied at home.” Ms Murray says she misses her family terribly. They are enduring much more severe lockdown regulations in South Africa. “While thinking about whom I would dedicate this book to there was no better choice than the best friend I have

We shared a wondrous childhood full of everything included in these pages and so much more,” she says. Ms Murray chose to release the Isolation 100 for Kids eBook in this format so it can reach people around the world now, when they need it most. Print copies will become available in the near future. THE WAY FORWARD

he Australian equity market’s rough ride has continued into May with the S&P/ASX 200 Index trading in a wide 450-point range over the past four weeks. Adding to the volatility, more than half of daily moves in that period have been one per cent or more. Policy stimulus in the form of interest rate cuts, central bank programs and government rescue packages have been aggressive and, so far, have reduced the risks of a credit crisis developing. Moreover, the sharp de-rating in stock markets has seen price-earnings premiums to long-term averages virtually evaporate. Also important is time – in our view, most of the drivers of the latest downturn will be temporary rather than prolonged, allowing economies to emerge from the

worst of the damage inflicted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) relatively quickly. That said, a full return to health will likely take several years, as evidenced in the latest economic growth forecasts from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which envisage a steep contraction of the economy in the rest of calendar year 2020 before a rebound in calendar year 2021. The RBA expects gross domestic product to shrink by eight per cent in the June quarter of 2020 before returning to growth of seven per cent in the June quarter of calendar year 2021, and then moderating to five per cent growth in June 2022. The central bank’s two key measures – unemployment and core inflation – however, will remain out of reach for some time. As of June 2022 – the bank’s forecast horizon – the RBA estimates the unemployment rate will still be 6.5 per cent (after peaking at 10 per cent in the June quarter of 2020), well short of its 4.5 per cent target. Meanwhile, core inflation in June 2022 is projected to be only 1.5 per cent (after bottoming at 1.25 per cent over the June quarter 2020 to December quarter 2021 period), also well short of the bank’s 2.5 per cent target. Nevertheless, policy stimulus and growing confidence that the spread of

COVID-19 is being managed have allowed equity markets to bounce back from their lows. Authorities will not expect to see COVID-19 eliminated; rather, they want to control the spread, and on this front, the good news continues. As further stimulus measures actually take effect – JobKeeper payments, for example, only started to land in people’s pockets in May – and cushion the economic impact, we can see the S&P/ASX 200 Index returning to a 5500-6000 level by the end of this year and see scope for the Australian equity market to then start outperforming. We are not as confident on the upside

for US equities yet, given they have outperformed in the year to date – the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite Index is now actually slightly firmer in calendar year 2020. Furthermore, we see the currency being less of a benefit to US dollar investments, given we forecast the Australian-US dollar exchange rate staying around $US0.65 this year. Queensland is refusing to open the border, but NSW and businesses are calling on the premier to reconsider. WORDS: My Weekly Preview and AAP.

ueenslanders are being urged to plan a winter holiday in their region during the upcoming school break, as borders remain closed to interstate travellers. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last week told reporters there had been confusion over the school holiday restrictions, but that Queenslanders would be permitted to travel up to 250 kilometres “They can holiday in Queensland in their regional areas so I really want to encourage people as much as possible to start planning those holidays and support our tourism industry,” she said.

The announcement came as she faces pressure from the tourism industry and other stakeholders to open the borders. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has repeatedly pushed for Queensland to relax the rules to allow interstate travellers to visit the Sunshine State for a holiday. But Queensland is holding firm, saying the borders will remain closed until the southern states can bring their COVID-19 cases under control. Queensland Transport Minister Mark Bailey has said the government won’t take health advice from New South Wales, which

has recorded 50 deaths from the virus and is still regularly recording new cases. “We won’t be lectured to by the worst performing state,” he said. “It’s time for Gladys and the New South Wales government to get their act together and start performing as well as Queensland has on the health front.” Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich has called on the State Government to reconsider its stance. “While we don’t underestimate the continued need to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that the immediate health crisis has abated thanks to Australians responding swiftly to the measures implemented over recent months,” Ms Zubrinich says. “We have placed our trust in our Prime Minister and his chief medical officer who have guided our nation through these unprecedented times, with strong support from the National Cabinet which includes the Queensland Government. This unified approach served us well, particularly in a time of crisis. “It is therefore disappointing that as the Federal Government prepares to shift its focus on the rebuilding of our economy,

the Queensland Government is set to contradict the advice from the federal chief medical officer by delaying the opening of our state borders. “We understand the need to protect Queenslanders from the pandemic, however, the impact of the virus on our economy is already apparent and over a further extended period may be the nail in the coffin for many in the private sector.” Ms Zubrinich says while COVID-19 will remain active in communities until a vaccine is found, hospitals have had adequate time to prepare for outbreaks. “We can’t forget about the 217,000 Queenslanders who are employed directly and indirectly by our tourism industry, which accounts for 9.1 per cent of all people employed in Queensland and contributes $12.8 billion directly into the state’s economy. “While we accept international tourism remains out of bounds for the foreseeable future, opening our state borders will bring much-needed domestic tourism. This will not only support tourism operators directly, but also the thousands of vulnerable part-time and casual workers who have lost their jobs due to this crisis.”

MY TIME METHOD Preheat oven to 160°C (fan forced), and oil a 10- to 12-hole muffin tin. In a large mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil, milk, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup and pure vanilla extract. Mash the bananas with a fork (but don’t puree – leave a few chunky banana pieces). Add mashed bananas into the wet mixture.

Add the wet mixture into the dry mixture and fold through until combined. Equally distribute the mixture into the prepared muffin tin. Break up the dark chocolate and add a good chunk into each of the muffins. Bake for around 20 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Serve while still warn to enjoy the lovely oozy melted dark chocolate. Enjoy!

DRY INGREDIENTS ½ cup buckwheat flour ½ cup almond meal 1½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 2 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp salt

2 eggs ¼ cup good-quality olive oil or coconut oil ¼ cup milk (full fat or nut milk) 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp 100% pure maple syrup 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 3 medium very ripe bananas Good quality 70% dark chocolate

INGREDIENTS • 4 cups self-raising flour • 300ml cream (I use thickened cream, however, any whipping cream will do) • 200-250ml water • Pinch salt • 1 cup sultanas (optional)

Serve with jam & cream

METHOD Sift flour into a large mixing bowl. Make a hole in the centre and add cream, water and salt. Mix with large knife (I use a dinner knife). Throw in the sultanas if desired. Mix well. Knead dough on a lightly floured board and pat down to make an oblong shape. Roughly divide into 12 rounds (the bigger the better) and brush tops with milk. Bake on a lightly floured baking tin (not greased) at 250°C for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden.

WELCOME BACK One visitor TurtleCare Volunteers were excited to see back on Caloundra’s Shelly Beach this season was Gai’ya’djin djinang which means Bite Foot in local Kabi Kabi language. She was fitted with a satellite tracker two years ago, and volunteers learned she lives off Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. This season our volunteers got lucky and managed to tag two new turtles with numbered titanium flipper tags. This tagging, research and monitoring could not be possible without our wonderful TurtleCare volunteers and community support.

FROM THE MAYOR Some say the sky’s the limit when it comes to improving our region’s facilities. For the past five years, Sunshine Coast Council inspections have gone airborne using drones to help with a range of maintenance activities where jobs are dangerous, difficult or too hard to access. While staff have their feet firmly on the ground, drones are being used as their second set of eyes – to expand the lifecycle of bridges and roads, better manage pest control, monitor habitats and fauna populations. Council is also investigating whether drones can be used to assist in natural disasters.

APPLY FOR COVID GRANTS Sunshine Coast Council has announced a new grant, COVID-19 Community Response Grants, and expanded its Emergency Grants with the Community Grants Program. Eligible not-for-profit groups can apply for a variety of grants to help clubs and organisations impacted by COVID-19. Categories include Operation and Maintenance, Continuity and Connectivity, Capacity Building and Facility Improvement. Grants between $3000 to $10,000 are available. Conditions apply. THREE CHEERS FOR TEACHERS

Sami Muirhead is pondering caveman chic, a look we’ve all been sporting of late – with varying degrees of success.

Like many parents, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane is home alone once again, and she’s reflecting on the dedication of our children’s teachers.

ow are you going heading back to the real world? Caveman chic days are ending as everything slowly returns to BC days (before corona days). My caveman chic was less chic and more hick as I had grey roots for months and legs as hairy at my favourite Wookiee, Chewbacca. The only family I saw rocking the caveman chic look was, of course, the Hemsworth clan. The most perfect family in Byron Bay and Australia, and potentially the world. One of my favourite pastimes is to Google photos of the blonde boho tribe as the gaggle of little kids traipse around Bryon Bay wearing their clay linen shorts and organic hemp tie-dye singlets with their fabulous little blonde tousled man buns on their heads. Thor (sorry, Chris) is always right next to them leading by example and refusing to wear shoes. Maybe the God of Thunder has some special sole powers because us mere mortals would walk on prickles and be crippled by the pain or we would splat fair into doggy doo and have to get that smelly business out from between our toes, or worse still we would land fairly on a used needle or something very unsavoury. Not the Hemsworth kids, or dad, or the hot Spanish mum who glides around barefoot in search of boho dresses and soy-milk lattes made by Nimbin slips of girls who look like a cross breed of

hippie-fairies. Nope! Their feet all seem to have superpowers when it comes to avoiding anything painful or gross. My two boys always want to go barefoot all the time because we live near the beach. This is fine for outdoor occasions but when we go to the shops, I like to pretend we are not the bogans that we probably really are at heart. So, I am a horrid mother and make them wear shoes. If I am extra cruel, I make them wear socks under their sneakers. This usually ends with tears and groans and crying. The five-year-old monkey asked me the other day: “Why do I have to wear shoes to go to get groceries?” He has been raised with me asking him 398 times a day to go and put some shoes on so I snapped and replied: “If you do not wear shoes you will certainly catch coronavirus!” The little guy turned white, but it did the trick. During lockdown I have resorted to some other little white lies. The tooth fairy is a lazy little bludger and has not been to visit my daughter despite the fact her tooth has sat next to her bed for two months. Of course, we all know that she cannot get into the country due to COVID-19 restrictions. That was a good one! And one of my best whoppers was telling the kids too much time on their iPads reduces their immunity system. I just hope they do not tell their teachers the porky pies I am telling them.

his week has been so quiet at my house. Eerily quiet. For the past five weeks, it has been a mad house. I have been a secretary, watching the clock to alert my little workers so they don’t miss their Zoom calls. I’ve been in active wear so I’m always prepared for compulsory exercise breaks. I’ve been sharpening pencils, searching underneath furniture for erasers and drawing up grid paper on demand. Of course, logistics have come into play in a major way, making sure the fridge and pantry are sufficiently stocked to ensure there isn’t a breakout of ‘hangry’ Gremlins. I count my lucky stars that my eldest is only in Year three, because I could handle fractions and shape symmetry. Anything more complicated and you probably would have found me in a corner in the foetal position. Has it been hectic? Yes. I also had to run a business in all of this craziness. Do I miss it? I never thought I would. I was counting down the days to when both of my children would be back at school. But I miss having them around. I don’t have a daytime table tennis buddy, or anyone to laugh at the silly songs I make up and I’m back to sitting for too long because there isn’t a break time to get me on my feet. One beautiful thing to come out of this short era is I know I will now be working my tail off while they are at school so I can down tools the moment I pick them up and

have that precious time together. I have realised how often I would continue working while they came home and how much time I was missing with them. On the flipside, my kids aren’t missing me. They are revelling in the fact they can see their friends and be taught by a real teacher who has oodles of patience. My eldest has said she’s happy for me to be ‘just mum’ once again. I would like to give a standing ovation to every teacher across the Coast, from day care to high school and even university.

“My eldest has said she’s happy for me to be ‘just mum’ again” Many of them have managed to juggle classrooms with some children still attending as well as ensuring students in their charge have been able to continue with remote learning. Zoom meetings, weekly workbooks, customised PE and music lessons – everything was thought of. I categorise teachers as frontline workers now and I tip my hat to each and every one of you. I definitely have a whole new level of appreciation for what you do for our kids and to see how you all adapted when faced with this pandemic has been nothing short of impressive.

ll year levels have returned to Queensland schools this week with the government recently giving the final green light for students in years two to 10 to head back to the classroom. “This latest step is only possible given the low transmission rates that Queensland has experienced and thanks to the efforts of all Queenslanders,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says. “Our decision to adopt a sensible and deliberate approach with this phased return has proven to be the right one as we progressively move to relax the range of COVID-19 restrictions in place across the state.” Students and staff have been given strict rules aimed at reducing the risk of new coronavirus infections. Adults must maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres and must not gather in groups in and around school

WHAT IF YOUR KIDS FEEL SICK? • They must stay home – that applies to teachers and staff as well. • If symptoms include acute respiratory infection, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fever or a history of fever, they must be tested for COVID-19. HELPING AND BEING HELPED: TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN Something special happened at Nambour Christian College (NCC) when the oldest and youngest grades returned to school last week. It was anticipated that when students re-connected, there would be a tangible boost in positive emotions, but what happened between the carpark and the classroom was beyond expectations. For the youngest prep and Year one students, and their parents, starting back at school was always going to bring a mix of emotions, including some apprehension. In communities like NCC, this would usually be alleviated through warm and friendly interactions between teachers, parents and children at the classroom door, but safety requirements prevented parents from leaving the carpark. And that is where the ‘big kids’ came to the rescue and, in so doing, also rescued themselves. The prep and Year one teachers, as

well as some school leaders, were in the carpark to greet and gather the little ones. Joining them was a group of Year 11 and 12 students who would then also greet them, carry their bag and lead them off to their classroom area. “It was heart-warming to see and feel the joy of both the younger and older students as they moved off in twos, threes and fours, chatting and connecting in a way that seemed so natural for the little ones, now with their new big friends,” says NCC College principal Geoff van der Vliet. “When we care for others, we simultaneously feel cared-for,” says David Hadley, NCC director of student wellbeing. “Looking after each other through acts of kindness and thoughtfulness provides a deep-felt sense of being seen, safe, soothed and secure.” And so the ‘scary’ re-start of the school year for both the little children and young adults was turned to a eudaemonic connection. White’s all right but colour is king Bringing colour into your home is an exciting first step for any DIY-er who wants to bring a feeling of warmth, character and depth to their space. However, choosing the right paint colour can be a challenge. Interior designer stylist and style editor at Inside Out magazine Jono Fleming shows you how to get colour confident with a transformative living room makeover.

Before

hen Jono Fleming originally designed his family’s farmhouse, every decision centred around the fireplace with the intention of creating a timeless space. All walls were painted white, acting like a blank canvas to create a feeling of grandness, magnified with the cathedral pitched ceiling and exposed timber beams. But in a room so expansive and white, the space felt cold and sterile despite the softness and textures in the furniture and decor. For inspiration, Mr Fleming reviewed Porter’s Paints’ Capsule Collection, which includes 32 colours. He chose a classic, deep and moody navy, Porter’s Yacht Race, to help make the living room feel more grounded, without downplaying the grandness of the room.

“It’s all about small steps when it comes to using colour throughout the home,” he says. “I recommend starting with the main colour you’d like to introduce and build out from there. “I used the dark kitchen and red Persian rugs that had deep blue patterning as my starting point for building the palette and was drawn to Porter’s Yacht Race because navy acts as a great neutral. “Blue hues are fantastic to use in living areas. They provide a feeling of comfort and understated elegance, plus there are endless colour pairings. Painting an entire wall navy might seem like a big jump from white, but when the rest of the decor and furniture are complementary, the colour is considered.” When it came to selecting finishing touches, Mr Fleming close an abstract artwork featuring deep blues, black and greys. It complements the wall colour, rugs and polished concrete floors. “To add some drama, we used natural ceramics and an abundance of luscious greenery,’’ he says. “I had always gone with the mindset that white walls are safe, timeless and anything else might date the space, but there was always something that felt missing. “I’ve entirely changed the feeling of the space and demarcated living zones, in what was once an expansive open-plan room,” he says.

• When choosing colours, think about what mood you want to create in the space. I wanted the living room to feel cosy and grounded and was therefore drawn to the moodiness of this colour. It’s a timeless navy, suits all architectural styles and will add character to any room. • Start with a rug or artwork. Take your colour cues from a key painting or rug to give your room’s scheme an intentional feel – work within this palette. Also, choose colours you love and that are liveable to you. • Open-plan spaces can be ‘zoned’ using colour. Approach the wall you’re considering adding colour to as less of a feature, but more of which wall will help ground and delineate the space – choose to paint the wall that all the attention is already around. • Have fun and experiment. Remember, if you change your mind about a colour, you can always paint over it. To feel confident with your choice, always start with using sample pots, painting large swatches in designated areas so you can live with the colour for a few days and see how it performs under ever-changing light conditions.

ne of the most common design challenges here on the Sunshine Coast is how to renovate the facade of a low-set brick and tile home from the ’80s. The type of brick you have will really dictate whether you can work with it or need to apply a finish to upgrade your homes facade. There are a number of finishes that can be applied, ranging from bagging and painting to rendering or simply painting with a plain or textured paint finish. Cladding and decorative work can add depth and interest. The addition of entry features such as awnings and pergolas can also add definition to the facade of a plain home. Many clients aren’t even sure of the style that would work with a simple brick and tile home. The short answer is quite a few different styles can be applied. Feature parts of weatherboard cladding can give a home a coastal or Hamptonsstyle look. Bagged brick can provide more of a homestead feel, and with the addition of some feature accents, a Tudor-style design can also be created. At the end of the day most renovators need to ask themselves the question, are

they renovating to live, to rent, or to sell? The answer to this question will then provide guidance on how much money they should spend on the renovation and what sort of style they should go for. Simple neutral design and style is always best when looking to resell a home, however, if this is your forever

Well, well my little surfing creatures, did we all get our fill on this last weekend? Damn it was good everywhere. I even heard of someone scoring First Point Noosa with a handful of guys in the water. You don’t get that often. You know it is big when you are paddling up the face and you cannot see the morning sun. On your stand-up! I’ve hear so many great stories of epic waves.
