The whales are back! The 2019 whale watching season kicked off with gusto last week with the official christening of the new-look Whale One boat, which has undergone a complete makeover. Sunreef Mooloolaba owner Dan Hart says, “Whale One has been an icon on the Sunshine Coast, so she totally deserved a complete makeover to bring her right up to date and we are super excited for everyone to come and see how she looks.” It is expected that 33,000 humpback whales will migrate through Sunshine Coast waters this year. And, you and a friend could be among the action. We have joined forces with Sunreef and Whale One to give one lucky reader the chance to win a whale watching double pass valued at $150. Enter now for your chance to enjoy a journey on the legendary 20-metre catamaran.

FROM THE EDITOR

I

have a confession. I’ve never really made time to listen to a podcast. Sure, I’ve heard bits and pieces, but I’ve never committed. This could be considered surprising given that 62 per cent of Australians have listened to a podcast, according to an ABC study. Obviously, I have a nose for news. I’m as curious as they come and love nothing more than taking the time to sit down and read an investigative piece. I love what good-quality, in-depth journalism can bring to the world. Given my news-seeking passion, my husband asks why I haven’t tuned into a podcast or two while on the work commute. Truthfully, I love the sound of silence and solitude my car can bring. It’s the one time of day where I can sit in the quiet. It’s great. However, after reading this week’s cover story about the rise of podcasts, I can sense that my quiet time is about to be invaded. And, I can’t wait. There are so many thought-provoking, inspiring and groundbreaking stories to hear. As media identity Mia Freedman says, “I think what people love about it is the intimacy of it.” Podcasting really is the perfect complement to traditional forms of media. I have also been inspired this week by our profile on Paralympian Karni Liddell, who is the single mother to an active two-year-old son. The inner strength she possesses is second to none. You can read her story on page 20. Until next week, happy reading.

ia Freedman has always been a media pioneer and her full-speed charge into the phenomenally popular world of podcasting is no exception. Her media company Mamamia produces 11 podcasts that attract two million downloads a month and with 65 million downloads across Mamamia’s suite of podcasts to date, something is clearly striking a chord. “It’s growing exponentially for us,” says Ms Freedman. “Podcasting is the fastest-growing part of our business in terms of revenue and audience.” But it took a while for Ms Freedman to persuade her team that podcasting was the next big thing. “About five years ago I had been on my summer holidays and I had really gotten into podcasts,” she says. “I was going on long walks on the beach and I loved the way podcasts would let me do things while retaining information. On holidays I wanted a break from reading things on my phone. “After that I came back and said to our management team here at Mamamia, ‘we all need to get into podcasts’. They all dismissed

10 My Weekly Preview | June 7, 2019

10.indd 1

it and pretty much ignored me. They said we had a lot of other priorities, so I just went off on my own and started making Mamamia Out Loud on an iPhone and we’ve built it from there.” Four Mamamia podcasts were finalists in this year’s Australian Podcast Awards, held on May 18, with Lady Startup – a hub for women entrepreneurs – winning Best Business & Marketing podcast. Mamamia podcasts cover everything from beauty to business, books to babies and a bunch of subjects in between and Ms Freedman says she could release a new one each week, such is the insatiable demand for new content. “I listen to podcasts literally everywhere,” she says. “In the shower, when I’m driving, when I’m getting ready, folding the washing, in the car with my kids, on the way to work, walking to the office – it’s also my favourite thing to do on weekends. “What I love both as a listener and a maker of podcasts is it’s the only truly mobile form of [on demand] media. With every other form of media, you can’t do something else while you’re consuming it. With a podcast, you can mow the lawn, walk the dog… “I think what people love about it is the intimacy of it. It’s so much more intimate being in someone’s ears. I love the ability to give nuance with tone of voice and I love the immediacy of it.” Ms Freedman’s popular No Filter podcast has her interviewing a host of fascinating people and she learnt early on that audio plus

visual doesn’t always equal a better interview. “Interestingly with No Filter, I did it out in the office and videoed it at first,” she says. “I quickly stopped doing that. I found the difference between people being filmed or just being recorded was that you get a much better quality of interview on a podcast. “People are much more open and honest and unguarded and that’s what I love about it. People feel safer. “The other thing I love as a podcaster is people don’t ‘hate’ listen to podcasts. People will hate read or hate watch, but people don’t listen to a podcast as background noise so it’s a real privilege to have their attention.” As an avid podcast listener and creator, Ms Freedman has her finger squarely on the pulse of podcasting and says its meteoric rise in popularity is due to a number of factors: it

deep and you’re hooked,” Ms Freedman says. “When I’m out with my girlfriends we’ll say, ‘have you heard this podcast?’ Everyone will have their phones out subscribing to new podcasts. People are really building communities around podcasts.” It’s a sentiment Jennifer Thompson from Sunshine Coast Libraries agrees with wholeheartedly. As the library programs and marketing officer, it’s her job to keep an eye on trends in book borrowing and as part of that, she’s at the coalface of societal trends in information consumption. “Libraries are ahead of the zeitgeist,” she says. “We know what our customers are asking for and there has been quite a bit of conversation around podcasting lately.” A podcast fan herself (her favourite is The Little Dum Dum Club), Ms Thompson on says

“Podcasts are pretty much the biggest thing in the world outside of Brexit at the moment and people are fascinated with true-crime podcasts” Jennifer Thompson, Sunshine Coast Libraries

informs and entertains while you perform necessary but boring tasks and it’s a highly addictive medium that allows you to consume information while giving your eyes a rest from screens. But most importantly, through its inherently intimate nature, it taps into people’s emotions and unites them around salient issues. “Once you discover podcasts you dive

podcasts are so popular because they make you feel like you’re part of a conversation. “It’s like they’re speaking to you,” she says. “We’ve noticed a massive surge of interest in terms of not only podcasting but the massive rise of true-crime material.” True crime is one of the world’s most popular podcast genres and was the first to snare a devoted global audience with the myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

debut of smash-hit podcast Serial in 2014. Serial was the first podcast to unite people in online groups and forums and turn them into a bunch of Sherlock Holmes wannabees. The Serial subreddit (a discussion group on social media site Reddit) attracted 60,000 members and the first two seasons of Serial have been downloaded more than 340 million times. Season one of Serial is about the murder of a teenage girl and featured interviews over a prison phone line with Adnan Syed, who was convicted of her murder. It was incredibly addictive and spawned online communities of people eager to see Mr Syed, who professed his innocence, get a retrial. Thanks partly to evidence uncovered by the podcast, his conviction was overturned in 2016 and in 2018, Mr Syed was granted a new trial. However, this decision was overturned in March this year and Mr Syed’s conviction was reinstated. Since Serial, a host of true-crime podcasts have snared our attention and turned us into a community of amateur sleuths, from S-Town (which set a record of 10 million downloads after four days of availability) and Criminal, to Australian true-crime hits Who the Hell is Hamish and The Teacher’s Pet.

5 KEY POINTS More than half of Australians aged 18-75 have listened to a podcast (62 per cent) Women are driving the surge in podcast listening, with 65 per cent reporting they listened to more podcasts in 2018 as opposed to 51 per cent of men Most people listen to podcasts on smartphones (74 per cent) True-crime podcasts are growing in popularity each year, with 44 per cent of listeners saying they’ve listened to a true-crime podcast within the past month The average time spent listening to a podcast episode is 48 minutes. (SOURCE: ABC PODCAST RESEARCH 2018)

did you know? Sunshine Coast Libraries has plans to establish a dedicated podcast recording studio on the Coast. With the growing global popularity of podcasting, the Libraries team is keen to support the creation of local content. The State Library of Queensland has provided a grant of $19,000 to help create a soundproof recording studio that the whole community can access. The Teacher’s Pet investigated the disappearance of Lynette Dawson in 1982 and resulted in the arrest of her husband, former rugby league player Chris Dawson, in December 2018. Journalist Hedley Thomas and producer Slade Gibson won the Gold Walkley Award for their work. “Podcasts are pretty much the biggest thing in the world outside of Brexit at the moment and people are fascinated with true-crime podcasts,” Ms Thompson says. “With The Teacher’s Pet podcast, the amount of community recall, support and call-in guided Hedley Thomas heavily to the finish. He could have just worked in an office, but by doing a podcast, people had their memories jogged just by listening. People would think, I remember seeing something, I’m going to call him. “It’s the same deal with Rachael Brown’s true-crime podcast Trace. It’s one of the podcasts where she was able to get enough public support and evidence to get it back to the Victorian coroner, who is going to reopen the case. Now she’s written a book about what she did to investigate and how that translated into a podcast.” True-crime podcast Wrong Skin won Podcast of the Year at the Australian Podcast Awards. Wrong Skin is an investigation by The Age into the 1994 death of two Indigenous

young adults in the Kimberley. The Age editor Alex Lavelle called it an “immensely challenging project which pushed the boundaries of storytelling and production”. “Wrong Skin is a wonderful, incredibly sophisticated podcast,” says Dave Gertler, founder of the Australian Podcast Awards. “True-crime podcasts not only affect and compel audiences in the same way a page-turning novel does, but lately they have also been a platform of community to form around discussion of unsolved crimes. Often a request by the podcast for any listener who might know something to contact them leads to the story itself taking a new turn in later episodes.” In 2015, Mr Gertler, an independent podcaster, felt the podcasting industry was starting to mature and would benefit from its own awards. In 2017 he launched the Cast Away Awards, rebranded in 2018 to become the Australian Podcast Awards. “My vision for the Australian Podcast Awards is that it grows and more and more people come along who aren’t even podcasters but just want to celebrate.” A podcast die-hard who first got hooked on the Radio Lab podcast in 2012, Mr Gertler says, “Once you like podcasts, you really, really like them a lot. Radio Lab just blew my mind – once that type of podcast gets under

your skin, you can’t go back from there. “I think that’s one of the essential ingredients of a podcast – the intimacy of the conversations people have. Ultimately it’s the simplicity of podcasting that makes it work so well. It’s easy once you find something you like, to consume as much as you want.” While binge-watching Netflix or spending hours on social media isn’t great for our brains or our eyes, bingeing on podcasts is one addiction that’s not likely to have negative side effects. “The only thing that happens if you listen to too many podcasts is that it becomes all you want to talk about, which can be a problem,” Mr Gertler laughs. “But I think it’s a very positive thing. It opens people up to worlds they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. They can learn new skills, they can learn about a new career or industry, they can get inspired to so something good with their life, they can learn how to make themselves more healthy and they can connect with people who are into the same things they’re into. “Pop culture, arts, literature – if no one else in your neighbourhood is into it, you can feel like you’re connecting with people who are on your level.”

HOT 91.1 LADIES OAKS DAY It was glitz and glamour all the way for the 15th annual Ladies Oaks Day. A total prize pool of $10,000 was up for grabs for the Billy J Boutiques Fashions on the Field. As punters sipped bubbles and placed their bets, live music was pumping on two stages. Sydney DJ duo Bombs Away and Sydney party band Furnace and the Fundamentals entertained the crowd. Proceeds from the day went to Jade’s Legacy, raising money and awareness for defensive driving courses for teenagers.

Local Bed Retailer Will Give Away Over One Million Dollars In Discounts On His Entire Inventory For The Month of June Because He Has A Tax Problem And Wants You To Be The Beneficiary Instead Of The Australian Tax Office My business has had a great year so far in 2019. In fact, we’ve done so well I’m probably going to pay double the tax I did last year. And the way it works in the retail trade is the more stock you have on hand. The more tax you pay. Herein lies my problem You see, without considering the tax consequences I just bought in a whole lot of stock and I must get rid of it to avoid being hit with a huge bill from the ATO. So my accountant’s told me to hold a massive clearance sale to get rid of my stock before the end of financial year. At up to 47% off all stock, I know I’m practically throwing away quality merchandise. I don’t care. I have to get rid of them.

AIR MUSEUM NEEDS SUPPORT TO SOAR The iconic Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra is fighting for its future. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he iconic Queensland Air Museum is poised to become a victim of its own success and the team of tireless volunteers who run the popular and unique tourism destination are calling for help to expand and ensure its future. The QAM, which is Australia’s largest and most diverse aviation museum, was founded in 1973 and now has 430 members, including 110 active members who dedicate a collective 60,000 volunteer hours a year working at the Pathfinder Drive attraction in Caloundra West. With an average of three aircraft acquisitions a year, the two-hectare site has reached critical mass and the QAM executive committee has been in talks since 2012 with the Sunshine Coast Council to lease a 3.8-hectare parcel of adjoining land with Caloundra Road frontage. QAM marketing manager Geoff Smith says there has been significant delay in a decision to allow the QAM to take on a 30-year peppercorn lease on the land due to several state government stakeholders also being involved. “We are caught up in a world of bureaucracy at the moment and while we have the support of the local council, the decision-making has been going on for seven

Proposed concept for new building years now, longer than the Vietnam War, and there’s no sign that it’s likely to be resolved any time soon,” Mr Smith says. “We have been working away quietly, but the harsh reality is that unless we can get increased land to ensure we can continue to acquire historical aircraft as they become available, we will lose our integrity as an historical aviation museum and this will impact the number of tourists who come to Caloundra to visit the museum.”

The QAM attracts 25,000 visitors a year, with 15 per cent of those being international visitors. Mr Smith says an expanded footprint with a new reception area creating a statement entrance on Caloundra Road has the potential to boost those numbers to 75,000 within a few years, providing a significant economic boost to not only the town, but the whole region. To strengthen its case, the QAM executive

committee has presented the council with a comprehensive future expansion report and Mr Smith hopes community support will encourage some action to be taken sooner rather than later. “This is a multi-layered situation because if we can no longer acquire new aircraft, we will lose visitors as well as the volunteers who work on the aircraft. If our volunteer base dries up, so does our capacity to do all of the other community events that we do,” he says. “When we first started this campaign seven years ago, we had the room to expand. “Now, the situation is critical, and we are at that stage where the next aircraft that comes to us will cause some serious decision-making.” Mr Smith says a split site was not an attractive option and having to relocate the museum to a larger site is “almost umimaginable,” but the committee is hopeful it will finally see some action to allow the museum to expand its highly successful facility in its current location.

ELECTION RESULT AND THE MARKET

T

he pollsters have yet again failed spectacularly – this time in their 2019 Australian federal election prognosis. Since the election, the S&P/ASX 200 Index’s performance in the year to date (YTD) is at its strongest in more than 25 years. However, further gains have ensued in light of the unexpected turn of events. Banks – The banks have done reasonably well in a global sector context, but they have undoubtedly been carrying some discount in anticipation of a more hostile political atmosphere. That’s not to say that banks are now in for an easy ride, but they will now escape a more draconian implementation of the final recommendations from the Royal Commission. In addition, negative gearing and capital gains discounts remaining in place should be supportive for housing

sentiment. In the YTD, the S&P/ASX 200 Banks sub-index has markedly underperformed the market as a whole. We remain cautious on the sector, but there is a risk that a sustained turn in sentiment could trigger a shift in positioning among domestic long-only funds, which would be exert considerable buying pressure Private health insurers – With an ALP win, we expected Medibank Private (MPL) and NIB Holdings (NHF) would face some pressure on margins from a constraint on premium rate increases of two per cent per annum for two years. There are also underlying wage pressures in private hospitals, which would have put pressure on claims costs. In addition, the ALP had committed to a productivity commission review into the private healthcare system, which would have exerted further pressure on the sector. Looking at the YTD performance of the two key stocks in the sector – Medibank and NIB – doesn’t suggest much of an ‘ALP discount’. But pushing back further in time points to Medibank possibly carrying some burden for the prospect of constrained premium rate increases. PROFILE

better times ahead Karni Liddell is speaking up for those who can’t always speak up for themselves. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

s the Queensland Ambassador for the NDIS, Paralympian Karni Liddell has a message for people finding it frustrating to navigate the system: things can only get better. Ms Liddell is a single mother of an active two-year-old son and being wheelchair bound, says she could never have fulfilled her dream of becoming a mother without the NDIS. “I certainly wouldn’t be able to work to the level I work, with a two-year-old, without the support workers I’ve access to through the NDIS,” she says. “We have to be mindful of the fact that the

last system was horrendous. With the last system people like me who worked and paid tax could never access services like I access now. I struggled and fumbled and my parents did everything. That’s no way to live. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to be a mother. I would have had to move home with my 60-year-old parents. It doesn’t take 24/7 care to keep me working. It’s not a big package – I’m talking a few hours a day – that enables my parents to be parents and grandparents and my friends to be friends. “I totally get there are people out there who are finding it really hard to access the

system and I’m really, really angry about that. “It was supposed to be a really open communication between a planner and a person with a disability and their families without having to prove they have a disability a thousand times. I’m in a wheelchair, so it wasn’t challenging to prove I’m disabled, but at the same time, it hasn’t been a smooth road, because of the system. “There has to be a market for us to use. If I get money for a carer but can’t find a carer, the system doesn’t work. There’s a lot more to this than meets the eye. Medicare didn’t work straight away. In 10 years’ time we’ll look back and realise why there were issues. “It comes down to the market; people out in the community need to start seeing us as customers in a multibillion-dollar market.” Ms Liddell was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at 12 months. Specialists told her parents she would not walk or crawl, and was unlikely to reach her teenage years. Defying all odds, she went on to become a champion swimmer, breaking her first world record at 14 and winning bronze medals in the Atlanta Paralympic Games in 1996 and the Sydney Paralympic Games in 2000. Ms Liddell is a sought-after speaker and received a standing ovation for her TED Talk in 2014. She’s visiting the Sunshine Coast on June 21 for In Conversation at Venue 114. “Personally, I believe the thing that has disabled me most in life is this belief we are the riskiest people in the room to work with or have as a customer,” she says. “That’s an incorrect belief. That’s why I have to fight to fly every week. Ninety-five per cent of my life as a speaker is travelling around the world in a wheelchair and I have to fight to get on a plane… Going to an airport is like going back in time.” She talks at length about the airlines that have two-wheelchair policies and says she is often refused entry to a plane if an ablebodied person arrives at the airport before her

with, for example, a sore foot and takes the last wheelchair, despite Ms Liddell having booked the wheelchair when buying her ticket. She talks of her humiliation and embarrassment at having planes delayed while airport staff check the batteries in her motorised wheelchair for the umpteenth time. And she talks of the money lost when she was booked to deliver a $5000 speech for International Women’s Day in Sydney for the Macquarie Bank and didn’t make it due to airport staff losing her wheelchair. Ms Liddell is a passionate and outspoken advocate for people with a disability and can do up to five speaking engagements a week. Like any working mother, she finds balancing work and motherhood challenging, but she’s not complaining. “People certainly didn’t think I’d be a Paralympian or a mother,” she says. “I’ve never shocked as many people as I did when I said I was pregnant. I truly didn’t think it was going to happen for me. “I’m a changed person in every possible way. I’m happier, softer, better at my work, better at speaking. I’m very empathetic; I was pretty hardcore before. He’s a good kid and he loves other people. And – he’s very active. “I find it hardest when I’m sick, but I’m sure all mothers would say the same thing. We do the best we can and I do everything for Kai. A lot of work goes into organising my life and sometimes I’m late and things don’t get done, but I never thought I’d be a mum and I can’t believe it. I am so grateful.” The In Conversation event, which supports The Compass Institute, includes lunch, drinks and the inspiring speakers.

Karni Liddell will speak at In Conversation – Disability Vs Ability on Friday, June 21 at Venue 114, Bokarina. Tickets include lunch and are available through scvenuesandevents.com.au. Proudly supported by My Weekly Preview.

for vital Coast charity Spanning 20 years and raising $5 million, the 92.7 Mix FM Give Me 5 for Kids appeal has funded vital medical equipment, writes Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe.

U

nless you’ve visited a local hospital with a sick or injured child, you’ll never fully understand the effect 92.7 Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids has had on the health service we all rely on. Raising a staggering $5 million in 20 years, the annual appeal has funded vital medical equipment, free access to TV for patients at Nambour, and distractive therapy in waiting rooms, wards and clinics across the Coast. It’s funded special services like paediatric music, pet and yoga therapy and the local Clown Doctors. It’s also entirely responsible for growing the local Child Development Service to work with children with behavioural and developmental issues. Until 2014, this was not an option under the local public health system until $1.4 million was donated to Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids to establish the service on Wises Road, fit out the space and fund staff. Appeal proceeds helped young people

with eating disorders through equine-assisted therapy. And in 2018, it bought land for The House the Coast Built – helping families with accommodation needs in the years ahead. It’s built rooftop playgrounds and influenced the paediatric services on offer at Caloundra, Nambour and the Sunshine Coast University hospitals. During June, businesses on the Sunshine Coast do their bit for the cause. Families return year after year to hold fundraising events that add to the tally, giving up days and nights to make it happen. The Mix FM team attend every event. Every music trivia and poker night, golf day, art auction and Jessie’s Party in the park. Not because they have to, but because every member of the team is genuinely invested in the outcome. Tears are shed each year when the final tally is announced, and another record broken across the country. Last year’s $606,000 tally blew everyone out of the water.

The Southern Cross Austereo network holds Give Me 5 for Kids all over Australia – nowhere else has come close to the kind of money we raise here on the Coast. Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids is as real as it gets. It’s good people uniting for positive action in a community that we all know is a class of its own. That’s the magic of Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids to me. We all know we’re lucky to live on the Sunny Coast, and by ‘giving 5’ we can make things even better for our sick kids and so, by God, we do.

June 8: Live In The Park 2-6pm – Buderim Village Park This inaugural event will bring together the community for an afternoon of entertainment, food, wine and good company. MY OPINION

STYLE NEVER FADES

QUESTIONING DEMOCRACY

Sami Muirhead regrets giving her Sass & Bide leggings to an op shop as she does some serious fangirling over Heidi Middleton.

Kyle Kimball questions the assumption that democracy is a fair system and asks why we don’t consider the alternatives.

B

est part of the week? It was meeting fashion designer Heidi Middleton on a rare school night out with some of my girlfriends. There were bubbles. There was deep-fried food served with serviettes (always an instant party) and there was lots of laughter and chatter about sustainable fashion. I saved up for a pair of Sass and Bide Black Rats (fancy ruched leggings) for months in order to buy a slice of the clothing label’s cool factor. They cost around $200 and you had to scramble to secure a pair. I worshipped those Black Rats more than my boyfriend in 2006. I am kicking myself for recently giving away my leggings to an op shop. They had stretched and I stupidly thought they would never come back into fashion. You see, I have somewhat lost my way with my style and what I should/could/would wear on a daily basis. I am pretty comfy in jeans and Cons for work, but I am wondering at what age a middle-aged woman needs to grow up in her attire. I used to wear only dresses from op shops, but I do not seem to have the time these days to scour for vintage treasures and since having my babies, my outfits take second place. But life is perhaps going full circle as I feel my pull back to authentic and original clothing. Heidi Middleton is humble and kind and ethereal in real life. Cate Blanchett would play in her a movie. I could have

stared at her all night in my crazy fan-girl state. She’s the sort of woman who is uber warm to other women and super cool but also kind and makes you want to run home and start sewing your own clothing. The mum of two sold the Sass and Bide empire she founded with her best friend for a reported $80 million before setting up home in France. There, the idea of her new business came to her in the form of Artclub, a website that sells a curated fashion line and paintings. “After selling Sass and Bide and moving to France I had some time to consider carefully how I wanted to re-enter the market and I could not hold back on the fact I wanted to create again,” Heidi said, addressing the Sunshine Coast audience. “And this time around I have joined the fashion and the arts because I enjoy fashion and painting and working in other mediums so it is like my online atelier and I have also added my vintage items I have accumulated over the years.” Heidi uses a lot of fabrics she has sourced from Europe including old curtains and bolts of vintage fabrics found hidden away, saying no one can have their head in the sand when it comes to sustainability. Thanks Ms Middleton for being such a creative force and a kind soul. Meanwhile, if anyone finds a stretched pair of Black Rats at a local op shop please contact me – I need them back!

emocracy – what is it good for? “Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy, it is absolutely essential to it” – Howard Zinn. And so, the close of another election campaign. We are told there are winners and losers. This time, those that support the LNP are the winners. Followers of the Labor party, by definition, are thus the also-rans. Next time it may be the other way around. Winners and losers all the same. We are thus, despite trite commentary about the ‘peaceful’ handover of power reflected in the voting process, a nation divided. Divided at our core levels of self-interest and ideology. And constantly so, courtesy of regular elections at a variety of levels. So how did we get here? Why is ‘majority rule’ fait accomplice? Why is the mob’s decision any more valid than that of some autocrat? The majority rule is enforced, ultimately, in the very same manner as a dictatorship – threat (and imposition) of violence in the instance of disobedience toward the laws. Is it better because there’s more of them? By some quirk of fate (or perhaps the expert application of power and propaganda over time), the idea seems to have stuck with modern Western society that the majority can impose its will on society. Simply because of its numbers. Where is the thought as to alternatives?

The idea that democracy is the best form of government seems to have been put beyond question. Perhaps that is because it suits the powers that be (and those that yearn to be)? We all know the well-worn maxim, ‘divide and conquer’. Doesn’t it seem somewhat convenient that our ‘leaders’ (aka politicians) are the greatest fans of a process that perpetually ensures a divided nation? For all their talk of unity, and so-called plans for ‘our great [insert name of nation

Society is readily pit against itself by our political leaders… here]’, it is our politicians that benefit most from this thing called ‘democracy’ and its divisive effects. Society is readily pit against itself by our political leaders, forcing us to wrestle with the quaint (and ultimately distracting) notion of deciding ‘who shall lead this time’, all the while clueless that we are not being led (anywhere in any event) and at the same time being divided into our component parts for the benefit of others. And then there is the question of whether we need to be led in the first place.

TRAVEL

GLOWING STRONG Whichever way you view the Waitomo caves, these New Zealand natural wonders are worth exploring. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

I

never would have thought staring at the rear end of a moth pupa would be a magical way to spend a morning, but when you venture into the town of Waitomo, it is the thing to do. Glowworms and the caves they reside in are the major drawcards to the otherwise sleepy rural town in New Zealand’s north island. And there is nothing more magical than taking in the beauty of thousands upon thousands of little glowworms spread out

across the roof of a cave, reminiscent of a clear and crisp starry night sky. The Waitomo caves entice young and old, adventurous and not-so adventurous, able bodied and physically challenged. There is a cave experience that can be matched to any person. Travelling throughout the north island with a party that included adults, teenagers and children, it was a challenge to find daily activities that would engage everyone, but this was not an issue when we reached Waitomo.

The majority of the grown-ups embarked on the thrilling Black Labyrinth tour in the belly of Ruakuri Cave while the two kids and I walked above them, exploring the intricate cave system of limestone stalactites, stalagmites and spotting glowworms. For Black Labyrinth you don a wetsuit (a must for these chilly underground waters) and grab a rubber tube to experience the rush of floating at pace with the underwater current in complete darkness through caves adorned with luminescent glowworms. This might seem a little too relaxing for an exploration tour, so they throw in some sections where you take a leap of faith, backwards off underground waterfalls. Those wanting to step it up even further can take on the Black Abyss, which is the ultimate cave tour that also includes a 35-metre abseil into Ruakuri Cave’s tomo (hole), an underground flying fox and waterfall climbs. My experience was much more leisurely. With the kids in tow, we first walked through lush native forest and took a short stroll through an underground cave system with a guided tour. We boarded a boat – the climax of the tour – for a silent, yet awe-inspiring journey under a glowworm ‘sky’. As the rest of the family were still underground by the time we resurfaced, we had time to venture on to Ruakuri, the longest cave in Waitomo. It is also the only wheelchair accessible cave in the southern hemisphere, with a grand spiral ramp winding deep into the earth making for a majestic and surreal entrance. We were even able to glimpse a group of explorers on the Labyrinth tour as they navigated the waterways below us. Above ground there are many walking tracks scattered around the hills that allow you to experience glowworms in the open air. Waitomo is a peaceful town to stay for a few days – one of those rare places that combines adventure and excitement with the ability to connect with nature in all of its glory.

Gary, Sam, Connor and Eilish McCarty join Chris Rawlins and the rest of the tour group to take on the Black Labyrinth

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS BLACK ABYSS The most comprehensive caving experience with an underground flying fox and waterfall climbs. Experienced, trained guides will take you safely through the stunning underworld BLACK LABYRINTH Float down the underground river in rubber tubes while admiring the glowworm displays above. Jump into cascading underground waterfalls.

FOR THE LESS ADVENTUROUS RUAKURI This cave is now an amazing example of engineering and natural cave structure. ARANUI Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo’s three main caves. WAITOMO The Waitomo Glowworm Caves tours are made up of two levels. The upper is dry and decorated with delicate formations. The lower level consists of stream passages, glowworms and the tallest chamber in the cave.

MOONSETS COME TO DUSK The Sunshine Coast trio is back. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

t’s not every day that you get to enjoy the dulcet tones of an electric harp, but self-taught harpist Kayt Wallace is front and centre of musical trio The Moonsets, who will delight crowds at the next DUSK concert. Ms Wallace artfully bends the organic tones of the harp with classic guitar effects as her smoky vocals sweep from whispers to roars, completed by the rich grooves of Stephan Beattie on bass and the playful rhythms of Andrea Joy Norden on skins. Mr Beattie says their self-titled album will be their first since the trio changed their moniker from The Flumes to The Moonsets in 2016. The six-track EP features a collaboration with John Goodson and new tunes with a mix of whimsical themes

A former Noosa River camping ground that for years was an unofficial refuge for those doing it tough is the focus of a photographic exhibition at the USC Art Gallery. River’s Edge presents 56 photos, taken by Sunshine Coast-based artist Kim Guthrie, of the Johns Landing Camping Ground and the various people who stayed there. Before the property was sold to Noosa Council in 2017, it had been run as a low-cost private camping ground since the 1950s. In addition to welcoming campers, it had many long-term residents and was a sanctuary for marginalised people and those at risk of homelessness. USC Art Gallery manager Megan Williams

With Mercury and Mars in your sign, you’re passionate about getting ahead. But the more you try to control and rush others, the more they will resist. Consultation and active listening will get you a lot further than bossy behaviour.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

The week commences in a confusing rush, so slow down and get your bearings before you proceed. Convivial cats – aim to get the balance right between socialising with others and spending some quality time on your own.

This week, expect some confusion between relationship responsibilities and work issues. Do your best to maintain strict boundaries between what is personal and what is professional. A relationship with a child or friend also looks frustrating.

With Mercury, Mars and your destiny point all activating your career zone, you’re keen to power ahead and achieve more at work. But annoying delays, low motivation levels and tricky timelines are a problem at the moment.

Prepare for a rather challenging week as circumstances or people frustrate your plans. When it comes to your aspirations, don’t let others hijack your dreams. No matter how difficult things become, you need to be the captain of your own ship.

FROM NEGLECTED TO NEXT-LEVEL LUXE Robyn Hills has worked her magic on this penthouse apartment at Marcoola – get in quick when it goes to auction. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

R

enowned Sunshine Coast-based photographer Robyn Hills is no stranger to a good property renovation project, having completed at least one every year since she turned 22, but her latest challenge was very different to any she had tackled before. When another project she had her sights set on fell through following a building inspection, Ms Hills heard about 121/885 David Low Way, Marcoola a five-bedroom penthouse that was available through a bailiff auction after the former owners were four years in arrears on body corporate fees. The catch was, it needed to be bought site

unseen and sans building inspection. She was speechless when the bailiff opened the door and she finally got a look at her investment. There was furniture scattered throughout the apartment, holes in walls, the floors in some rooms had been stripped bare and there was patched plastering and half-painted walls. “The previous owner had started to do some renovations, but they didn’t finish anything,” Ms Hills recalls. “I’m an experienced renovator, so I’d seen worse. With this project, it was the sheer size of the place that was challenging. Five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a rooftop terrace, it was around 200 square metres and almost the size of three standard houses.” Ms Hills threw herself into the renovation project with her usual creative flair and gusto and called on fellow Coast creative and renowned interior designer Adrian Ramsay to collaborate on some ideas to transform the space over eight weeks. “This property was quite unique so Adrian helped me with some ideas to create the penthouse plush look I was going for,” she

says. “He helped me to push the boundaries and gave me a fresh perspective on ways to introduce new concepts to the space.” In a nod to the location close to the airport and Ms Hills’ own love of aviation, she incorporated bespoke removable wallpaper that is an aviation chart of the Sunshine Coast in matte black. “I love doing this because I use my creativity and my vision to create something that is beautiful and functional. Just as I capture the beauty in the people I photograph, I capture the personality of each property I work on,” she says. At 22 years old, Ms Hills’ first property investment was a block of four flats, which she renovated. Over the years, she has concentrated on blocks of units – including designing and building them. Some are renovated and held, others sold profitably. Her aim is to continue to accumulate property and supply the market with housing that is beautiful and functional. With eager potential buyers watching Ms Hills’ renovation progress photos on Facebook

with keen interest, listing agents Kai and Jill Lebens of McGrath Estate Agents knew before the property was officially listed that this would be a high-enquiry property. “It’s very unusual for a penthouse of this size to come up for sale on the Coast, especially one that has a rooftop as well,” Ms Lebens says. “This property is not in the flightpath, but has pristine views of the coastline, easy access to the beach and is located close to the airport for those who regularly travel or work in aviation. We are expecting enquiries rom a broad range of demographics from owner occupiers through to investors, Air BnB owners and also fly-in fly-out workers.” Ms Lebens says this listing will shine a spotlight on Marcoola, which offers great beach accessibility in a quiet and picturesque setting. The property will feature in a series of online videos and print marketing through My Property Preview with the aim of reaching as many potential buyers as possible for the June 22 auction on site at 10am.

LOCAL RESIDENTS EMBRACE THE REDEVELOPMENT OF ICONIC BUDERIM SITE From page 35

T

he redevelopment at the site previously home to the Buderim Motel has been receiving overwhelming praise from local residents that have visited the display unit that is now open for inspection. Marketing agent, Russell Dell from Place Projects, says Buderim residents have been

positive in their response to the new 32-townhouse development that has replaced the motel. “The feedback from locals has been fantastic. Many have recounted stories of the Buderim Motel when it was the place to have your wedding reception, but they are also pleased to see Buderim Central rise in

its place transforming the streetscape and delivering a project that embraces the lifestyle community that attracts buyers to Buderim,’’ he says. Visiting the display unit will certainly allow you to appreciate the success of the overall development that was designed to meet the demand from buyers looking for a downsizing option that is home to other like-minded residents and where you can feel part of a welcoming community. Buyers can select from four townhouse styles all with three bedrooms and priced from just $565,000. “The level of specification is significantly higher than buyers expect at this price which is attracting both local buyers and new residents ready to enjoy the lifestyle Buderim offers,” Mr Dell says.

“…Buyers can select from four townhouse styles all with three bedrooms and priced from just $565,000”

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Well, those who watched the Margaret River Pro got treated to some insane waves at the box. Worth watching Jack Robinson smash Toledo. He had absolutely no answers. Also, Conner Coffin dropping into a bomb with a school of dolphins – pretty insane footage. Had that experience just south of Byron a few years ago at a place called Flat Rock. So many dolphins it made it hard to paddle. Now for waves this weekend… ummm… looking average. Me? Yep, I am off to Indo to hopefully score four- to six-foot perfection for two weeks. Ill be thinking of you guys… said no one ever!
