FROM THE EDITOR
F
ooty season can be a little competitive in my household. Hubby and our five-yearold are fierce Gold Coast Titans supporters. To be fair, I’m not a huge follower of the game, but being a north Queenslander at heart, I can’t turn my back on the Cowboys (even after last weekend’s shocking game!). Each season we have a little fun, jesting about wins and losses. Sitting around the television as a family at grand final time always creates great memories too. Now, imagine if the Sunshine Coast secured its own NRL team. Wouldn’t that be something worth supporting? Next weekend thousands of people are expected to cheer on their team as the South Sydney Rabbitohs face off the New Zealand Warriors right here on our own Sunshine Coast Stadium field. In the lead-up to the highly-anticipated game, MWP journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane asks the question: will we secure our own professional team in the future? She even scored an interview with Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess in the process! You can read the story on page 10. From fans to fun, this edition we also share our quarterly holiday fun guide, which is packed full of ideas to keep the young, and young at heart, busy these school holidays. We also have travel (weekend getaway anyone?), news, beauty, fashion and the latest and greatest in the local property scene. Enjoy.

COUNTDOWN TO KICK-OFF Rugby league fans will flock to Sunshine Coast Stadium next Saturday for the Rabbitohs v Warriors clash. And it’s a sign of things to come, says the mayor, who hopes the region’s sporting credentials will draw even more big-name teams and events to the Coast. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

H
istory is set to be made this month when the South Sydney Rabbitohs run onto the Sunshine Coast Stadium field to take on the New Zealand Warriors in what will be the region’s first National Rugby League (NRL) round match. With two competition points on the line, the level of intensity tens of thousands of NRL fans have enjoyed in pre-season match-ups earlier this year will be cranked up. And, having missed a few opportunities in the past to train and play on the Coast, Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess is just as pumped about the game as we are. Speaking with My Weekly Preview on a rare day off from training, Mr Burgess says injury kept him away from a training camp on the Coast in 2015. He also missed the Rabbitohs’ promotional tour in October last year when the deal with the Sunshine Coast Stadium to play one NRL match on the Coast each year until 2021 was announced. “I want to break that drought this year,” he quips. “I’m looking forward to getting out there to showcase good rugby league. “There is something in the air when there are competition points up for grabs and typically the Warriors are a big, physical pack who have a bit of flair, so they always turn up for a great game.” Having played international games in both rugby league and rugby union, the six-foot-five forward has run onto the fields of some of the world’s biggest stadiums, but he says nothing compares to the

atmosphere of playing in front of a full house in a smaller stadium. “I prefer the smaller crowds in some cases – one of our trial games this season was in front of 10,000 people and the atmosphere was electric; there was so much excitement in the place,” he says. “My favourite is the Central Coast Stadium in Gosford (which has a capacity of 20,059) because while it’s not huge, you can feel the passion there and fans are close to the action. Where I grew up in England, the stadiums are usually 15,000 to 20,000 capacity, so I quite enjoy that size.” Under the guidance of coach Wayne Bennett, Mr Burgess says young guns like Cameron Murray and Braidon Burns will shine alongside team stalwarts Dane Gagai, Adam Reynolds and Greg Inglis during the round five match. Among a host of residents looking for a taste of NRL action, the match is expected to draw more than 3000 visitors from outside the region. It also looks set to rival, if not beat, the record crowd of 10,680 who turned up to watch the pre-season North Queensland Cowboys versus Gold Coast Titans game in February. Live TV coverage will beam the region to massive audiences around Australia and New Zealand, which Mayor Mark Jamieson says is a great outcome. “Council has worked hard for some time on increasing the awareness of our region by the NRL, whether it be through hosting trial matches or being a venue for pre-season
training,” he says. “We’ve shown our outstanding credentials, including providing a venue that can host NRL events.” With the success of the Sunshine Coast Lightning and the establishment of the Australian Cycling Academy, Mayor Jamieson says the sport and fitness industry is one of the region’s seven high-value industries, generating more than $440 million in economic activity each year. Sunshine Coast Falcons CEO Chris Flannery says the partnership with the
“TV coverage will beam the region to massive audiences around Australia and New Zealand” Melbourne Storm remains strong, with the Falcons continuing to be one of the NRL club’s feeder teams until at least 2020. “Having NRL games here is also great for our local players,” he says. “Our usual home games attract about 2000 spectators, so for them to be able to run on with more than five times that in the curtain-raiser game on April 13 will be a great experience for them. “The more NRL games we get, the better, and hopefully it will lead to our stadium getting bigger to increase our chances not only of an NRL team, but also to take
advantage of opportunities like hosting the QRL Intrust Super Cup grand final, which will be played at Redcliffe this year.” Mayor Jamieson says there are aspirations for the region to place itself in a position to be “the next cab off the rank if an NRL license became available in the future”. “Games like the Cowboys v Titans match held in February, and the upcoming season fixture between the Rabbitohs and the Warriors give the region a great opportunity to showcase what we have to offer, so the Sunshine Coast is well placed to host its own NRL team in the future,” he says. NRL head of government and community relations Jaymes Boland-Rudder agrees the region has “an established and strong connection with rugby league”. “The quality of the facilities is a major consideration for us when we are considering regional venues, and as such the facilities on the Sunshine Coast compare favourably with other regional venues we are using in 2019,” he says. However, he was quick to point out that there are “many more considerations for expansion than a region’s ability to host an NRL fixture”. “That said, our belief is that playing matches on the Sunshine Coast – as well as many other areas in 2019 – is a form of expansion itself,” he says. “We have been very clear recently that we will be looking at what is right for the future direction of the game. That includes the prospect of expansion. However, it is very early in that process.” myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has re-opened discussions about a possible NRL expansion to 18 teams, targeting Brisbane, Perth and New Zealand as possible destinations and more recently floated the idea of relocating the financially struggling West Tigers or Manly Sea Eagles north of the border. No matter what the future holds, there are plenty of pathways into the big leagues for Sunshine Coast players. Mr Flannery says a number of junior Coast players have signed contracts with the Storm and youngsters from Melbourne have the opportunity to be based on the Coast to “cut their teeth here before going on to play at NRL level. “The relationship is working really well. “The more our local guys see those elite players here and see the NRL players training and competing, the more that they realise it’s not out of their grasp to reach that level,’’ he says. Mr Burgess says he is particularly excited about the success of the inaugural Women’s Rugby League season last year and what it means for young players of any gender in the future. “We used to go and watch Mum [Julie Burgess] play every weekend and she represented Great Britain at one point, he says proudly. “My daughter is now two and she already loves rugby, screaming at the TV when a game is on, and she is growing up kicking soccer balls and rugby balls. “The little fella is three months [old], but he’ll be the same, no doubt. It is brilliant to know they will both be able to play professionally in the future if they want to.
WATCH THE GAME LIVE VIP and general admission tickets are still available to the South Sydney Rabbitohs v New Zealand Warriors round five NRL clash at the Sunshine Coast Stadium on April 13. Do you think the Sunshine Coast should have an NRL team? This is a question My Weekly Preview asked two years ago, and with the NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg ramping up talks of expansion or team relocation in the past few weeks, it has become more valid than ever. We asked some NRL greats, past and present, for their thoughts.

“The more times we can fill the Sunshine Coast Stadium and show that the demand exceeds what we currently have here, that is always going to be positive for any future bid for [stadium] upgrades and our own team. “There has been a bit of talk over the last month by the NRL CEO Todd Greenberg in regards to expansion and Redcliffe is being touted as a possible inclusion to the NRL. They’re the frontrunners, but a lot of people who don’t want an extra team in Brisbane certainly think the Sunshine Coast would be a great location to have an extra NRL team. “A lot of things are being spoken about, but if we continue to improve the facilities here at Sunshine Coast Stadium and do everything possible to bring those crowds to the Sunshine Coast, who knows what’ll happen in the future.
“I have been to the Coast plenty of times and I love how passionate they are about the game. Having the NRL host round matches there will give the proper homage to rugby league that many want in that area, and the Coast has produced a number of great footballers over the years. “I know the Coast will attract consistent crowds. It reminds me a bit of Newcastle before the Knights. Every now and then an NRL trial match would come along and we used to absolutely love it. Further down the track, the Knights were formed and the community really got behind that ambition for us to have our own team. “Over a period of time, if it is strategically planned, the Sunshine Coast could definitely have a crack at getting their own team. Expansion is part of the game for the NRL and I would like to think the Coast would certainly, one day, be in the comp.
Visit our K-12 Open Day Sunday 28 April 12:30 - 3:30pm
“The round five match – where we will face up against the Warriors – is a step forward for the Sunshine Coast and maybe the NRL bosses will see the success that might come from having a permanent NRL team there. “I’m all for it; any expansion of the game is fantastic. There is heaps of talent around the country, so giving these players the opportunity to play professionally is only a positive thing. “I remember growing up as an eight-year-old kid and how it was so exciting to see a professional open training session. I remembered every player who stopped to interact with me after training and I have followed their careers. “The power of that is the more teams there are out there, interacting with young players, even if they inspire just one kid to pursue their dream, that’s what the NRL is about and it means we’re doing a good job.

COAST MUSOS, FESTIVALS WIN BIG AT STATE AWARDS Sunshine Coast’s Sahara Beck won the Regional Award for her big chorus pop anthem Here We Go Again at the Queensland Music Awards. In the People’s Choice Awards, which give the music-loving public an opportunity to celebrate the state’s finest festivals and venues, the Big Pineapple Music Festival was crowned Festival of the Year for the second year running. More than 8000 votes were received this year, making it the biggest People’s Choice Awards to date.
CASH FOR CANS TAKES OFF The introduction of the 10-cent refund on drinking containers across Queensland has opened up a number of new revenue-raising opportunities for not-for-profit organisations and many businesses are getting on board to give them an even bigger boost. The Beerwah Hotel and Palmwoods Hotel have decided to donate the cans and bottles from their bars to a different charity every six months. After an online poll, which attracted more than 12,000 votes, they will be donating to Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy and the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge.

$12 MILLION COUNCIL GRANT MAKES BOWLS ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE Club Kawana was delighted by the arrival of eight new bowling arms and a transport trolley, that was made possible due to a Sunshine Coast Council grant. The bowls club has been looking at numerous ways to further provide access to bowls facilities within the local community. Their newest project allowed the club to purchase eight devices, which allow those with disabilities and back issues to use free of charge so they can participate in the sport of lawn bowls both socially and competitively.
Wishlist has received $12 million in funding to put towards future emergency hospital accommodation to support the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Wishlist has been in discussions with Sunshine Coast Council and community organisations for more than 18 months about a proposal to build a multi-storey facility to fill the gap in subsidised accommodation at SCUH. The building will also provide space for services that support exceptional hospital care in the precinct. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the federal government funding will go a long way towards making the project a reality.
STUDENTS AWARDED ESTEEMED THOMPSON Six high-achieving first-year University of the Sunshine Coast students have received the university’s most prestigious scholarship – the Thompson Excellence Scholarships, valued at up to $32,000 each. The awards were first offered in 2015, made possible thanks to Roy and Nola Thompson’s $5-million gift towards the Sippy Downs campus multi-level carpark, which produces the scholarship funding. Recipients include Indy Burt, Eden Danielsen-Jensen, Tamika Francis, Tom Rosenthal, Joshua Dean and Oscar Noble. myweeklypreview.com.au

GREEN STATUS PROMISES A BRIGHT FUTURE The Sunshine Coast Council wants the region’s environmental credentials to be internationally recognised. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
IMAGE: J HILL
T
he Sunshine Coast Council area is 54 per cent native vegetation, has 81,900 hectares of open space and more than 460 recreational parks. Plus, our region boasts Australia’s largest Land for Wildlife program and 40 per cent of homes have solar power, almost double the national average of 21 per cent. These are just a few reasons why the council believes we should become a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) biosphere reserve. Biosphere status is internationally recognised and there are 686 biosphere reserves in 122 countries. Only nine of them are located in Australia, with the closest two in Noosa. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council will seek a biosphere declaration for “a large part” of the Coast and he believes it has the power to enhance the national and international reputation of the region. “Biospheres are areas where active conservation sits alongside responsible development and people living sustainably – just like our region,” he says.“Being recognised as a biosphere would reinforce our healthy, smart, creative objectives for the region, provide it with a particular value proposition and help enable us to preserve our outstanding natural assets for current and future generations. We would also seek to leverage the economic opportunities that came with that international recognition. “For example, biospheres create niche markets for products, services, facilities and practices – which will provide a significant point of difference for our agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism sectors.” Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says his organisation supports the proposal. “In a world that’s increasingly more compressed, with populations continuing to skyrocket, particularly across the northern hemisphere, our natural environment is increasingly becoming a drawcard for tourists,” he says. “They don’t get to drive over something like the Maroochy River, or … sit somewhere like Mooloolaba Beach, or sit on One Tree Hill and look at something like the Glass House Mountains. When they holiday, they don’t want to replicate where they live, these congested and stressful environments; what they want is right here and it’s becoming rarer on a global scale.
Mount Ngungun “To be able to offer such an extraordinary collection of natural experiences, physical green space and access to biospheres, in the years to come this is what will make us increasingly more valuable and we will attract a different type of visitor who is appreciative and respectful of what we have. This is only going to be an advantage.” Mr Latchford says having the status bestowed on the region will also be a vital reminder for residents and business owners to continue to maintain, respect and encourage appropriate and sustainable growth. “I think the community as a whole has reached a great point of maturity now where we can encourage appropriate growth, develop our industries and create better public transport in a way that is mindful and respectful for the environment, and we are lucky to be in a position where we can have our cake and eat it too. “The biosphere is the epitome of what we all stand for.” Mayor Jamieson says the process to nominate for biosphere status will be lengthy, starting with a three-month community consultation, which began on March 29.
ABOUT BIOSPHERES Biosphere reserves have three interrelated zones: • The core area – a strictly protected ecosystem that contributes to the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation. • The buffer zone – surrounds or adjoins the core areas and is used for activities compatible with sound ecological practices that can reinforce scientific research, monitoring, training and education. • The transition area – is the part of the reserve where the greatest activity is allowed, fostering economic and human development that is socio-culturally and ecologically sustainable. PROFILE
THE RIDE OF HIS LIFE
Australian para-cyclist Alistair Donohoe is on the Sunshine Coast preparing for his next big event. He took time out of his busy training schedule to chat to My Weekly Preview. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
A
listair Donohoe was like any 15-year-old growing up in Darwin. He loved sport and hoped to make a career out of it. He also loved hanging out with his friends at the creek during the school holidays. But one day as he went to jump out of a tree into the water, the rope swing caught his right arm and caused an injury that would change his life. “I wasn’t aiming for the rope but it caught my arm and got tangled,” he says. “It hit the knot at the bottom and that force was enough to sever 90 per cent of my tricep and 70 per cent of my bicep. There was also some radial nerve damage, which affected my hand and wrist. It was the single most painful experience of my life. I remember nearly passing out. I was overrun with shock and adrenaline and I was hanging by my arm at the time, trying to pull myself up. “When I went to the hospital, they didn’t really know what happened and how to treat it. With the internal bleeding my arm was huge and black. After a month the swelling had gone down and they could see the lasting injuries. There was nothing they could really do about it. I went to see a number of specialists in Melbourne over the next year and they considered possible muscle transplants.” The doctors told his parents he would lose his arm, but that prognosis was wisely kept from him. He was young and resilient, and went on to regain limited use of his arm. “All I was focused on was getting back to riding and as soon as I could, I did,” he says. “I learned to compensate. I did everything as a kid – athletics, rugby, mountain biking, BMX, road cycling and the velodrome. After my accident, I went more towards the velodrome than the road. In terms of an injury to get in a certain sport, I was lucky with bike riding.” Mr Donohoe’s father passed away in 2006 and his mother, with five children to raise, moved to Melbourne in 2010 to be near family. There, Mr Donohoe completed school and took advantage of the more competitive cycling scene. “Mum’s an absolute legend to be able to get through all that,” he says. “I’m the youngest of five kids and how she raised most of us on her own is just phenomenal. I probably got her mental resilience and drive. I’m sure she has a truckload. When she came to watch me in Rio, we had some pretty emotional moments and it was absolutely phenomenal to have her there and to dedicate some of my wins to my dad.” It was during the 2016 Rio Paralympics that Mr Donohoe was famously knocked off his bike when Ukraine’s Yehor
Dementyev collided with him as they sprinted towards the finish line of the 84-kilometre C4-5 road race, effectively robbing Mr Donohoe of possible gold. “He got disqualified,” says Mr Donohoe. “They couldn’t really reward me with the win. It was literally 20 metres before a gold medal.” While it was a devastating disappointment, Mr Donohoe looks back on the incident with a sense of humour. “It was a reverse Steve Bradbury,” he laughs. “It’s sport and you go with it. You win some, you lose some. You can’t really control those things. That really put the hunger in the belly for Tokyo and left something unfinished for me. In terms of the Paralympics, coming away with two silver but not getting gold was tough.” But Mr Donohoe, now 24, finally closed that chapter of his life recently when he beat Mr Dementyev at the 2019 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in the Netherlands, winning two gold medals in the Men’s Individual Pursuit C5 and Men’s Scratch Race C5, shaving six seconds of his personal best time. “It blew my expectations out of the water,” he says. “That’s the time I did before Rio and with the focus I’ve had on the road side of things, I haven’t been able to ride that quick for a few years and I didn’t think I was there yet.”
THIS IS MY SCHOOL
As a member of the Australian Cycling Academy’s Pro Racing Sunshine Coast team, based at the University of the Sunshine Coast, he’s spending a few weeks on the Coast training in preparation for the Tour de Langkawi in late March. “Pro Racing Sunshine Coast has the best interests of the riders at heart,” he says. “Cycling is a pretty cutthroat sport where quite often you find yourself a little bit used in the interests of the team. If the start of this year is anything to go by, being with them has made a huge impact. Having them in your corner and their advice goes a really long way.” Mr Donohoe has been enjoying the stunning Sunshine Coast scenery on his daily training rides, completing rides of between 100 and 160 kilometres six days a week. “This is what I’m loving about the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “There are so many new areas for me to explore. I rode to Noosa and back through Eumundi and the hinterland one day and up to Montville on another day. I’m doing lots of bunch rides with up to 50 people, which makes it a pretty exciting training environment. It’s a bit more motivating. There are a lot of older guys and younger guys and a lot of them are quite fast. It’s a really nice atmosphere.” After Langkawi, he’ll spend five months racing and training in Europe, all with one major goal in mind: gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “The goal is to become a professional cyclist, but at the moment my focus is pretty homed in on Tokyo.” Let’s hope the Olympic gold that had his name written all over it in Rio will finally hang around his neck in Tokyo, right beside the right arm that he has never allowed to hold him back.

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE Do you think you could learn to speak a new language by investing just five minutes
of your time each day? The creators of Scripts sure do. This app takes learning a language away from textbooks and CDs and into a new era of fast-paced mini games and tracing characters on your screen’s device. Scripts focuses on Japanese, Chinese and Korean due to the unique alphabet characters of those languages. You get to practice writing out the letters and as you progress, are tested to repeat the shape without a guide. These letters are directly linked to pronunciation, so you are learning how to read, write and say in one go. Users can download the app for free on Android devices through Google Play and can use the app for free for five minutes a day. If you want to spend more time learning each day, you can upgrade to an unlimited use subscription for $10.99 a month.
MINI MOVIE MARVEL Video projectors are a quick and easy way to convert homes and offices into mini theatres, and the desire for people to have this ability in a portable format was demonstrated by the massive support on Kickstarter for Docoy. The power-packed projector will offer users a 120-inch viewable screen size, multiple connectivity and dual audio with voluminous sound when it comes to market in April this year. Docoy was launched on Kickstarter seeking $14,050 to finalise production of the projector, which its makers claim will have the ability to cast video over short or longer distance and from different angles as well as allow screen mirroring and connectivity to Android and iOS devices. Three weeks before the makers’ crowdfunding time was up, they had raised more than $83,000. The device is only 10.6 centimetres wide and can be carried using its built-in strap or placed inside a bag for transportation.

CHANGES AFOOT FOR HOTEL PROPERTY INVESTMENTS
O
rd Minnett was involved in the float of Hotel Property Investments (HPI) back in 2014 and we have been positively disposed towards it for most of the period since. As the name suggests, it is a property trust that focuses solely on owning hotels (pubs). It has done well over the past five years – not only has it provided an income return of around six to seven per cent, but its share price has also grown from an issue price of $2 to about $3.40 today. The majority of the pubs in the portfolio are in Queensland and are leased to Coles. The reason Coles leases the pubs is because of the company’s ambition to grow its liquor store business, and in Queensland you can’t
run liquor stores if you don’t have the pub licences. There has recently been a significant announcement that Coles has entered into a joint venture with KKR-backed Australian Venue Co (AVC) in relation to its hotel operations. AVC will pay Coles $200 million to take over the day-to-day operations of the hotels, while Coles will retain the operation
“The majority of the pubs in the portfolio are in Queensland and are leased to Coles” of the liquor stores. Importantly, the lessee of the hotels remains unchanged. AVC is an experienced operator and already runs 60 hotels. We believe the introduction of such an experienced operator will be positive for HPI in that it should result in better financial performance of the hotels, and hence reduce the risk of the leases not being
renewed at expiry. This should lead to higher asset revaluations. Furthermore, we think that AVC will likely be more willing to partner with HPI in growth opportunities in hotels and accommodation over the longer term. The most immediate priority for HPI will be the 25 lease expiries coming up in 2021. Before the AVC deal, HPI had expected that six of the leases may not be renewed due to suboptimal hotel performance. HPI had been exploring options for those six assets including potentially rebuilding some of the pubs. With the AVC deal underway, we now believe it is much more likely the leases will be renewed. HPI is hoping to have clarity from AVC as to whether they will renew these leases by the third quarter of 2019. The shares have performed well recently, which has led Ord Minnett Research to reduce its investment rating from ‘accumulate’ to ‘hold’. Ord Minnett Research has maintained their price target unchanged at $3.20.

No exit fees No stamp duty RV homes now selling Resort-style facilities
Kieran and Des hit the road!
Loving the RV life! Caravanners Des and Kieran Stewart are thrilled to be moving into a dedicated RV home at Nature’s Edge Buderim, with room for them … and their shiny new van! A limited release of RV-friendly homes with extra large garages, perfect for caravans and RVs, makes Nature’s Edge Buderim the ideal home base for travel lovers like Des and Kieran. The couple’s caravanning life started with a ‘disastrous’ trip to Birdsville where just about anything that could go wrong did go wrong. Flat tyres, burst water pipes, fuel dramas and illness all threatened to quell their caravanning career from the get-go. Instead, they became hooked on the freedom of a travelling lifestyle and bought a van of their own. Now they’re busy ticking off a bucket list of adventures.
Downsizing and relaxing An icon in the local hospitality industry, Des owned the iconic Bridge Seafoods in Mooloolaba for 30 years. After selling the business, the couple decided it was time to downsize from their 26-acre property to embrace a more relaxed life. The couple is excited about moving into Nature’s Edge Buderim, where Des doesn’t have to mow the lawn and the beach is just 15 minutes away!

MY OPINION
FORGET AND FORGIVE
A HIGHER PERSPECTIVE
Sami Muirhead says while forgetfulness can be inconvenient – especially when you forget why you went to the shops – it’s actually a sign of intelligence.
Richard O’Leary continues his vertical exploration of the Sunshine Coast, this time taking on Mount Beerwah on the first cold day of the year.
S
cientists say being forgetful is a sign you are unusually intelligent. Phew! If forgetfulness is based on intelligence, then I am pretty much a genius. I attribute having babies for wiping out my memory for much of the past eight years of my life. I often joke that I have felt drunk for the best part of a decade, with many memories fuzzy to say the least. My youngest baby is now four years old, so I am not sure how much longer I can hang onto this as an excuse for my forgetfulness. Perhaps I am just really bad at keeping all the balls in the air. Before 8am, I have given hundreds of instructions and directed four lives (three kids, one husband) by making breakfast, ensuring each kid eats breakfast, begging each kid to take their bowl to the sink, repeating my request to take the dish to the sink, barking orders for teeth to be brushed teeth, hair to be combed and shoes to be found and put on the right feet. This is usually done while answering 235 questions. My day can include a varied schedule such as getting the kids to swimming lessons, paying bills, buying birthday party gifts, trying hard to act in control at work, remembering to phone mum, remembering to book that doctor’s appointment, remembering to phone back a friend who called me three weeks ago and kicking myself for forgetting to buy Glad Wrap. And do not get me started on how
many numbers and passwords are in our heads: the kids’ passwords, my work passwords and security codes and pin numbers for banking. No wonder I end up at the shops and I can’t remember what I’m meant to be buying. Last week I went to buy cheese for homemade pizzas and spent $300 on groceries, only to drive home without any cheese. Well, some relief. A new study by Neuron journal says forgetting is part of a brain process that might actually make you smarter by the time the day is over. Professors took part in the study and found a good memory does not actually reflect your level of intelligence. Even more exciting is the finding that when you forget details, it can even make you smarter. It all has to do with remembering the big picture as opposed to the little details. Remembering the big picture is better for our brain and for our safety. It is kind of like dumping a whole stack of photos and apps from your phone to help it work better. The hippocampus gets rid of small details. In my case, that usually means names or friends’ birthdays. The research shows when the brain becomes cluttered with too many memories, they tend to fight with each other and that slows down our ability to make important decisions. So rest easier tonight that if you are forgetful you are in an elite club of intelligent Coasties. Now. What was it again I was I meant to buy for dinner tonight?

S
ometimes you just need the wind whistling across your face. The thought came to me as I stood atop Mount Beerwah, the last mountain on my must-climbs of the Sunshine Coast. Only a few hours earlier I was trying to navigate the hot winds of debate in the family home. It was my birthday, but that didn’t stop my kids from trying it on, in particular the eldest as he pushed to change the rules for his hour of screen time each day of the weekend. He’d helpfully drawn up a contract. Knowing I was going for a walk, he wanted to have proof to show his mum if he won his way. Seeing the handwritten contract my youngest appointed himself as my lawyer, and although I consider him the best negotiator I’ve ever met, he wasn’t proving to be particularly helpful in what was already a difficult discussion. So I exercised my legal rights and dispensed of his counsel. My young lawyer didn’t appreciate his dismissal and showed his discontent in a rather colourful way, which I won’t detail for fear of future litigation. But I wasn’t deterred from my main goal of the day. I don’t know what it is about me and mountains but every time I drive to one my GPS sends me the wrong way – maybe it is a sign of artificial intelligence and with all the known inputs, it determines a
40-something, averagely fit man, with limited climbing experience would be better not arriving. Eventually I made it and wasted no time setting off. The early part was easy enough, a designated path leading to the climb proper, but once the slope became more vertical, the route was more discretionary than determined. Complicating matters, recent rain had made the surface more slippery, so I had to
“Sometimes you just need the wind whistling across your face” bush-bash a bit to ensure I had firm footholds – the only downside of that being the small paint blobs that guide you up disappeared from my path, which meant I really was going it alone. Halfway up I had to recalculate. Climbing can be like life – sometimes you must go back down and find a more suitable path before making it to the top to enjoy the view. But what a glorious sight it was on the first cold day of the year, everything calm and quiet, the sun bright despite the hint of a chill. And for a moment, total relaxation. Sometimes you just need the wind whistling across your face.

FOODIE FIND There are cocktails, and then there are barrel-aged cocktails. You will find plenty of the latter at Orleans, a Maroochydore venue that draws inspiration from the classics of New Orleans cuisine and finishes with a modern French Orleans twist. Barrel ageing cocktails adds depth, resulting in a cocktail with a bigger, richer personality and Orleans has two options on offer – Barrel Aged Negroni and Barrel Aged Old Fashioned, as well as a selection of other cocktails to excite the palate.

hen Laree Gadenne steps onto the red carpet next week, she will be realising a long-held dream to write, film and produce her own TV series. Ms Gadenne came up with the concept for the show, Hard Knock Life¸ several years ago and has been hard at work with a team of Sunshine Coast creatives and professionals since March last year. With final edits being completed last month, the show will premiere at a glamorous red carpet event on April 17. The six-part series, which is being pitched to Australian television companies and online streaming giants, explores the ups, downs and jaw-dropping moments of love, life and relationships through four main characters. “We have been able to use local professionals for every aspect of the show’s creation,” Ms Gadenne tells My Weekly Preview. “We definitely have a lot of talent on
the Coast, whether it is behind or in front of the camera.” Having spent two years in London featuring in movies and Netflix shows, Ms Gadenne’s drive for creating her own show was palpable and with the help of a Sunshine Coast Council Regional Arts Development Fund grant and her own savings, she was able to engage her own company, Karizmatik Productions, to direct the episodes. “It’s an unbelievable experience and feeling to see your work come to life,” she says. IN THE All scenes for the episodes were shot on the Coast, giving more than 100 local actors and crew members the opportunity to take part. Be the first to see two episodes. Tickets are $10 for the launch at Solbar’s Playhouse on April 17 at 6pm. Visit karizmatikproductions.com/ hardknocklife.

Scientists from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) are hoping a beer brewed with ‘sea lettuce’ from Moreton Bay will drive new interest in seaweed as a nutritious, tasty and locally-grown resource. USC Associate Professor of Aquaculture Dr Nick Paul has partnered with Newstead Brewing Co. in Brisbane to create what they believe is the first beer to feature Australian-farmed seaweed. They called it Moreton Bae Resalinated Gose and it’s made using desalinated water from Seqwater, using the seaweed to ‘resalinate’ it.

novel that introduces you to John Henry and Mary Davenport, a wealthy and influential couple who struggle to come to terms with the mysterious disappearance of their youngest son. Set in 1913, the Davenports are of a breed that command the respect and unwavering support of the community, but when they claim to have found their son in the company of a tramp and an unwed farm worker travels interstate to lay claim to the child, lines begin to be crossed in a bid to uphold the superiority of the Davenports. The tale is a little frustrating, especially in the way it ends, but it truly offers the reader the opportunity to place themselves in the shoes of both mothers to justify why they acted the way they did under the circumstances and given the societal restrictions that are placed on them.

Bats Theatre Inc is proud to present a madcap comedy loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Rear Window. The hilarious show is written by Billy Van Zandt and Jill Millmore, directed by Peta Beattie and features a cast of experienced local actors. The production has an original score and engaging audio/visual effects, including the use of live camera action. The story follows Marnie and Jeff and their friends from next door, Midge and Robbie, who think they spy their courtyard neighbour doing away with his wife. Is there another explanation behind her mysterious disappearance? Will Jeff overcome his fear of birds and will Marnie find the ultimate real-life script for her next bestselling book? Fans of Hitchcock, mystery and side-splitting comedy are encouraged to come along for an evening’s entertainment that promises to deliver thrills and fun. Shows are on April 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 7.30pm and matinees on April 6 and 13 at 2pm at the Buderim War Memorial Hall. Tickets are available at batstheatre.com.

REASONS TO VISIT THE GOLD COAST In need of a mini-vacay? Although our own piece of paradise offers everything and more, sometimes a getaway from home is just what you need. Located less than two-and-a-half hours away, the southern coast is a hive of food, fun and fashion where you can forget about work and housework, even if it is only for a brief period. 1. Beaches galore – From Coolangatta in the south to Main Beach in the north, there are plenty of sandy spots to relax. ge

THE GOLDIE HAS THE GOODS If you need a change of scene without going too far, you can’t go past the Gold Coast. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.
W
hen it comes to holidays, I dream of clear skies and warm sunny days. So it’s a little surprising that while on a short getaway to the Gold Coast last month I found myself enjoying the wet weather. Why wouldn’t I, when given the opportunity to curl up in a beautiful hotel on a comfy lounge with a good book, warm cup of green tea in hand, and views of the rain falling softly over the twinkling lights of Surfers Paradise below? Not too mention indulging in a delightful sweet caramel popcorn dessert. Bliss. This evening certainly set the standard for what was to be a thoroughly relaxing and welcomed couple of days away. I’ve been asked why I enjoy weekend getaways to the Gold Coast. After all, the Sunshine Coast has just as much (if not more) to offer in the way of world-class beaches, lush hinterland and dining options. But, sometimes it’s just nice to switch off from work, forget the housework and laze around,
eating, shopping and swimming for a few days. Surfer’s Paradise is the ideal location given the short and easy drive from home. Of course, it’s a bonus when you get to experience a new upscale global hotel brand. In November, InterContinental Hotel Group launched voco with the first location in the heart of Surfer’s Paradise. As part of the rebrand from Watermark to voco, the hotel completed a multimillion-dollar renovation. The end result is luxe-modern meets sophisticated style. The vibe is reliably different and yet a little bit playful, while incorporating all the five-star amenities you could want. Whether it’s enjoying a drink in the Social House bar, or eating dinner at Clifford’s Grill & Lounge, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a chic Melbourne location. Voco is near the world-famous Cavill Avenue and beach, both of which we were able to enjoy once the weather cleared up. Rain, hail or shine – this is one getaway that certainly ticked all the mini-break boxes.
IF YOU GO: STAYING THERE Voco Gold Coast offers deluxe and deluxe ocean view rooms, as well as suites. All rooms feature modern bathrooms, Aveda amenities and a stylish interior design. Visit goldcoast.vocohotels.com. EATING THERE The hotel has the added benefit of three on-site restaurants including cocktail bar Social House, Waves Buffet restaurant and the signature Clifford’s Grill & Lounge. The enticing aromas of chargrilled steak will hit you from the moment you walk into this quirky, yet modern restaurant. Sit inside and watch the chefs at work through the glassedwall kitchen, or dine alfresco and take in street views outside. TIP: dive into the Tomahawk Black Angus Rib Eye. You won’t regret it! PLAYING THERE With two pools, a gym and day spa, there is plenty to keep you entertained. Or step outside and within minutes you will find yourself in the heart of Cavill Avenue.
2. The food – There are so many restaurants to discover. From Hatted restaurants serving up five-star fare, to street eats, no tummy will be left hungry. Be sure to check out Chop Chop, located on Surfer’s Paradise Boulevard. This Asian street food market, situated in a vibrant laneway, comes alive in the evenings. 3. The nightlife – We may be a little old for the club scene, but that’s one of the reasons the Goldie is so great for all generations. Surfer’s Paradise boasts many stylish and sophisticated bars away from the masses where you can enjoy a meal and mixologists’ creations. 4. Cafe culture – There is no shortage of cafes dishing out delicious coffee. Take a stroll around Surfer’s Paradise and you are sure to find a variety of spots including small, hole-in-the-wall type establishments to larger cafes. Just follow your nose. 5. The shopping – Pull out the credit card because the Gold Coast has no shortage of fashion retailers. From high-end European labels to casual beachwear, you will find it all between markets and centres. Be sure to explore Pacific Fair. It has to be seen to be believed.

HOLIDAY FUN GUIDE
STEP BACK IN TIME THROUGH THE MARY VALLEY Best seen from aboard the Mary Valley Rattler, the gentle rolling hills of the nearby Mary Valley are a patchwork of grazing properties and macadamia nut farms, providing a tantalising glimpse into life in rural Australia. With a fleet of heritage locomotives including the C17 steam engine, and a suite of restored carriages all with their own unique character, the Mary Valley Rattler offers several different services every week through one of the most beautiful parts of Queensland. The Classic Rattler Run is the attraction’s flagship service, a three-hour round trip from the historic Gympie Station on Tozer Street to Amamoor that runs morning and afternoon every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Guests can also board the Classic Rattler Run in Amamoor for a return journey with time to explore the Mary Valley before or after their rail journey. It’s here in this delightful historic town, best known as the home to the annual country music muster, where you can watch the fascinating process required to turn the engine around on the heritage turntable. On Thursdays, the Rattler’s Red Rocket travels that same route as the

Leave plenty of time to explore the beautifully restored Gympie Station, which is arguably one of the most stylish and elaborate in terms of timber railway architecture and home to a historical gift shop and the Platform No. 1 Café. LOCAL ADVENTURES YOU CAN HAVE WITH TRAINING WHEELS There are many places to explore in the region, with hidden gems even some locals are yet to discover. The team at Adventure Sunshine Coast (adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) shares some of the best places to go when you have little ones with training wheels. Skippy Park, Landsborough Tucked between Beerwah and Landsborough, Skippy Park has a cycle circuit around a green oval and playground area that is great for beginners to learn or for experienced cyclists to burn off some energy in a beautiful setting. Skippy Park has shaded gazebos, electric barbecues, drinking taps and clean toilets. Coastal Pathway: Maroochydore to Alex Surf Club This is a great section of the coastal pathway that is suitable for a family ride. There are many cafes (and places to duck in for a sneaky ice cream) along the route, so it is easy to take a break if little legs get tired. Maleny Boardwalk: Platypus Walk, Maleny Follow a flat boardwalk beside Obi Obi Creek through a subtropical rainforest to platypus myweeklypreview.com.au

viewing platforms. Try going around 7am or late in the day and you should get lucky. At times you can also see turtles, water dragons and azure kingfishers. Coolum Beach to Stumers Creek, Coolum Beach This coastal walk starts in the heart of Coolum and ends at Stumers Creek. It is an easy 2.5-kilometre journey with the option to travel through bushland or along the beach. Walk along David Low Way, past the caravan pack and you’ll find the large cement footpath that goes through Norrie Job Park and joins up with Stumers Creek Road. Gary Evans Walkway, Nambour This hidden green space right in the middle of town is complete with paved walkways, a creek, picnic areas and miniature trains. There are also a lot of water dragons to be found on the walk as they dive off their favourite sunny spot on the path. My Weekly Preview | April 5, 2019 39

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
Prepare for an exasperating time mid-week when serious Saturn trims your fiery wings, curbs your cat creativity and stymies your natural Leo ebullience. The universe is teaching you to be less demanding and much more patient.
This week, be extra careful what you say to a stressed loved one. Criticism definitely won’t be appreciated – no matter how ‘constructive’ it is. On Wednesday, strive to get the balance right between being romantic and being realistic.
You prefer life to be all beauty, comfort and ease with minimum effort and elbow grease involved. Not this week! Saturn stirs up your home zone as a family member causes problems or a domestic matter demands to be fixed.
This week, strive to be firm yet flexible with a stressed relative or neighbour and avoid getting drawn into futile arguments. Love is in the air on Wednesday, when Venus and Neptune rev up your Scorpio passions and romantic nature.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Mid-week looks rather stressful as something (or someone) irritates you and tests your limited patience, so avoid the temptation to play pointless power games. Venus and Neptune encourage you to communicate in a much more diplomatic fashion.
Avoid being too brisk and brusque with loved ones this week as your business side goes into overdrive. Family, friends and colleagues respect your professional approach and your multi-tasking skills, but they can also be overwhelmed by them.
You’re keen to make the world a better place in your own humanitarian Aquarian way. Don’t get so carried away that you forget your nearest and dearest, though. Sometimes it’s best to start your charitable work in your own backyard!
With Venus vamping through your sign until April 20, you’ve got the power this week, Pisces! Charm and confidence will take you places. Love, romance, creativity, kindness and compassion are all on the radar as you enjoy yourself to the max.

INDUSTRY WRAP
We look at what’s happening in Sunshine Coast property.
AWARDS BOOST CONFIDENCE
First National Coastal’s general manager Shane Dawes, and principals Lisa and Paul Angell with their Top Ten Office award Sunshine Coast First National Real Estate offices were recognised for outstanding achievement at the General Excellence and Marketing Awards, held in Brisbane recently. The awards recognised the best of First National’s Queensland agents throughout 2018, with the top 10 individuals and offices now vying for a national GEM Award, which includes a trip to the National Association of Realtors conference in San Francisco. First National Coastal principal Paul Angell says the results show how successfully their staff leveraged the network’s customer acquisition strategy to overcome a changing
market in 2018. “Nothing beats hard work and a solid commitment to delivering for customers. That is exactly what our staff did in 2018,” he says. First National Coastal’s Mooloolaba office placed in the Top Ten offices in Queensland for their achievements across all departments. First National Carolans placed in the Top Ten offices in Queensland for the performance of their property management department. First National Coastal’s Maroochydore office achieved the highest number of commercial exclusive listings, settled sales, gross sales and leasing commission for a medium-sized office. Key staff members were recognised for their individual performances, including Narelle Filmer and Michael Kettle. Silver awards in residential sales were given to Andy Sharma of First National Carolans, Shane Purssell of First National Coastal and Vanessa Brunton of First National Carolans. Amber Hackworthy of First National Coastal received a silver award for her performance in commercial sales. A charity fundraising auction raised $10,500 towards Kids Helpline, a major new sponsorship initiative for First National Real Estate nationally in 2019.
RECORD-BREAKING SALES AT AVALON
Mosaic Property Group has achieved record-breaking sales across its showpiece award-winning, $103-million Avalon development on Duporth Avenue in Maroochydore, smashing its own $5.65-million record previously set for the same project. Two whole-floor luxury penthouse residences on levels seven and eight have achieved between $5.65 million and $6 million, along with eight other sales for half-floor luxury apartments, ranging in price between $2.6 million and just under $3 million. Officially launched in late 2018, the boutique luxury Avalon has already realised over $50 million in sales, with strong ongoing
interest from local and interstate buyers and was recognised for setting a new benchmark in residential design, winning the inaugural Design Excellence award late last year from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (Queensland). Mosaic Property Group managing director Brook Monahan says the market sees this as an extremely special and very rare opportunity to secure brand-new product in “the dress circle” of Maroochydore. “The site itself is rich in local history and we have spared no expense in ensuring we produce nothing but extraordinary for it,” he says. Construction on Avalon is scheduled to commence in May this year.

NEIGHBOURS MAKE FRIENDS FOR LIFE AT HARMONY
A
VID Property Group (AVID) believes that food and community go hand-in-hand. That’s why the developer of Palmview’s largest masterplanned community, Harmony, has created its now-famous Long Table Dinner series – an event held exclusively for new residents in a bid to celebrate and bring together the growing Harmony community.
On Saturday, March 16, Harmony hosted its third Long Table Dinner – the first for 2019 – and the team was thrilled to welcome more than 250 new residents to the event and the Harmony community. There was an incredible array of food on offer and community spirit was high as everyone got to know their new neighbours.
“This is now my third Long Table Dinner that I’ve come to, Harmony is just top notch. I’m loving it” Brendan Tobin, Harmony resident

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Ding, ding as the bell sounds on the opening event of WSL at Snapper on the Gold Coast. Small waves are predicted, so sadly will suit the Brazilian contingent. Let’s hope Mikey Wright and Ryan Callinan can act as a spoiler. Nonetheless, I think it will be live streamed after the Facebook disaster last year. Locally, it looks like there will be waves to be found early before the wind gets up, so get what you can or head to the points. Maybe it’s time to look at a new board or wetsuit from the crew at Beach Beat. Laters.
