I
will never forget the desolate and dry, cracked earth that spread beneath my feet as far as the eye could see. I can also never forget the skeletal cow with its desperate eyes seemingly searching for shade, or the devastation in the eyes of the farmer as he blinked back tears. The millennium drought, which stretched from 1997 to 2009, is etched in my memory. The rain hadn’t come and this farmer’s pain was just one story among hundreds in the rural region where I lived and worked as a young journalist. Farm life is hard and hugely dependant on the weather – I learnt that from an early age as a farmer’s daughter. On a cane farm, rain can mean riches or ruin. On a cattle farm, rain is survival. Living here in such a beautiful region, we can easily turn our backs on the harsh drought that is once again eating away at Australia’s farming industries. As long as we can fill our refrigerators with fresh Australian produce and meat, we are happy. But, what happens when that food stops? And what of the livelihood of these farming families? I have always been hugely supportive of Australia’s foreign aid program. As a wealthy nation, it’s vital we support others. But, is it time our governments adjust the budget a little and give more towards our own to ensure the future of our vital industries and our people, who feed millions around the world? KEEP ON RUNNING Where do you live? I am blessed to live in Minyama and start and finish my day looking out over the water. It is very good for the soul. First job? Salad bar girl at Sizzler. What are you currently working on? I’m always working on being a better person. As a mum and teacher I am constantly encouraging my children and students to believe in themselves and their capabilities while instilling a love of exercise. Your family includes… My husband Paulo and two daughters Poppi (eight) and Maggie (seven). I am also lucky to have my parents and in-laws live on the Coast. We are a very close family. First car? Blue Nissan Pulsar.
Favourite song? Accidently Kelly Street by Frente. I just love how happy it makes me and I just want to dance and smile. What are you watching right now? I don’t watch a lot of TV. My nights are spent putting my girls to bed, prepping for the next day and chatting with my husband.

Anna Mendes is a mother of two girls, wife, primary school teacher and a passionate advocate of health and fitness. She was an elite national swimmer, has represented Australia in Ironman Triathlons and loves to challenge herself physically, whether it be stair climbs, marathons or ultramarathons. She will be competing in the Sunshine Coast Marathon on August 19.
Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Becoming a mother. Motherhood has made me want to be a better person and a positive role model to my daughters. What achievement are you most proud of? Being a mother is definitely my greatest achievement, and competing in the 2013 World Ironman Triathlon Championships in Hawaii while juggling motherhood. I am also proud of finishing my first 100-kilometre ultramarathon with Paulo. You are happiest when? I’m running with my two girls, my husband and our dog, Bindi. We regularly run from our home at Minyama to Mooloolaba Beach as a family. I love this time and being active together.

Best day in your life? The day my eyes locked on my husband. We were participating in the Charity Island Swim and it was love at first sight. The birth of my two beautiful girls were also the best days of my life.
When was the last time you played sport? I run every day because I just love it! I get up 4am most mornings and I am normally home before any of my family are even awake. I am training for the Sunshine Coast Marathon but even if I wasn’t I would still get up early and run. Mornings are the best time of day. Best advice you’ve been given? I love the book and movie Wonder and it’s simple message of ‘when given the choice of being right or being kind, choose kind’. If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Put lines on walking paths, especially from Cotton Tree to Mooloolaba. It really frustrates me that groups of people take up the whole path or don’t stick left when walking or running.
What frustrates you? Children on screens. So many children are addicted to technology and I get so frustrated when I see children on screens when they could be socialising, communicating and playing with their families and friends. Get off your screens kids! How do you deal with your frustrations? I am a passionate person about health and fitness, especially with children, so I try my best to encourage children to ditch their screens and get active. If you could have dinner with any three people, alive or dead, who would they be? Turia Pitt, Roger Federer and Michael Phelps. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would travel around the world with my family running in marathons in different countries. NRL or AFL? NRL. Let’s go Broncos!

rought is ravaging our country like a cancer, slowly but surely eating away at the industry that is our country’s lifeblood. Drought-stricken farmers across Queensland and New South Wales are battling the biggest dry spell in living memory and these resilient men and women are at breaking point. In a good year, our farmers produce enough food for thousands of Australians. This year they are struggling to feed their own families. They are bankrupt – the 2017 Queensland Rural Debt Survey indicates that Queensland farmers are more than $17.2 billion in debt. Stockfeed availability is at an all-time low and subsequently an all-time high price. Chinchilla-based charity worker Tash Johnston says it can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 to purchase a truckload of hay, which can feed cattle and sheep from up to a couple of days to a couple of weeks at the most. As the co-founder of Drought Angels, Mrs Johnston has been on the ground battling the devastation for the past four-and-a-half years, raising much-needed funds to offer financial support to thousands of families. “We have grown men on the phone in tears, they don’t know what to do,” she tells My Weekly Preview. “They are doing their best to keep the stock alive. There is a massive shortage and

something has to be done. So many winter crops particularly in the Darling Downs region have failed because of no rain. These crops make our flour, our stockfeed. It effects every single one of us Australians. “The cost of feed has gone through the roof. Farmers have spent all their life savings, quite literally their life savings, to keep the stock alive.” But push has come to shove. Thousands of heads of cattle and sheep, who have

According to Queensland Government figures, almost 60 per cent of our state is drought declared, taking in the Toowoomba region, Southern Downs, Lockyer Valley and the majority of western Queensland. Ninety per cent of New South Wales is affected. According to the Bureau of

escaped the deadly claws of malnutrition, are now being slaughtered by devastated farmers. It’s cheaper to kill the stock than continue to farm. Animal bones litter the rain-deprived soil, which has cracks so wide that “you could almost lose a small child”, in Mrs Johnston’s words. It is a world away from the beauty of the Sunshine Coast. Here we celebrate our weather – the sunshine, the clear blue skies.
Meteorology, Australia has experienced its fourth-warmest autumn since records began in 1900 and rainfall was below average for most of the country. These dry conditions are expected to continue in Queensland into next year. The Federal Government has stepped up to the challenge and on Sunday announced a $190-million drought relief package. Producers eligible for the Farm Household Allowance will be given relief of
up to $12,000 for couples and $7200 for singles. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described some farmers’ situations as diabolical and tragic, as they battle bone-dry conditions across large swathes of eastern and southern Australia, AAP reported. “You put the food on our tables, the fibre that goes on our backs and we have your back,” Mr Turnbull said. Eligible farmers will receive the first payment on September 1, with another round of funding in March 2019. The Federal Government has now spent $576 million on relief for this drought. Meanwhile, the New South Wales government has been celebrated for coughing up a $1-billion package for their farmers, but at the time of writing, Queensland was yet to match the effort. In June, our government announced it would continue to maintain its existing relief arrangements with up to $34.6 million in 2018–19 for the whole-of-government Drought Assistance Package, up to $20 million of which will be available under the Drought Relief Assistance Scheme. Drought Angels’ Mrs Johnston says the government’s assistance is almost too late. “The governments need to take a long hard look at all the policies and procedures for our farmers. They can subsidise things for our farmers… they are the backbone of our country,” she says. “The Australian people have done more.” Big businesses and community groups myweeklypreview.com.au

are throwing their weight behind the issue. Last week Coles pledged to provide $5 million in grants and launched a fundraising appeal in more than 800 supermarkets. Commonwealth Bank has donated $2 million to help farmers and also announced it would not apply default interest rates on business term loans for customers experiencing difficulties from the drought. Locally, Sunshine Coast-based group Higgins Storm Chasing (HSC) has been a mouthpiece for farmers, working with the community to raise funds for Drought Angels. In the two weeks since launching the HSC Drought Appeal, almost $500,000 has been donated to the cause. HSC’s Thomas Hinterdorfer says the group is hoping to raise $1 million. They are encouraging schools to hold a gold coin donation day and have also launched a fundraising auction through the HSC Facebook page. “Being in the city myself, I go to the supermarket, buy meat and come home to green grass,’’ Mr Hinterdorfer says. “That’s how a lot of people are; it’s been a hidden crisis for so long. People were ignoring it. Get on board and support this.” Mrs Johnston says financial support is a necessity, but agrees those living in regional and metropolitan Queensland can do more. “As a nation, we don’t value them (farmers) enough. It’s our food bowl and who’s going to feed us?
“I encourage people to shop at IGA or independently-owned and family-owned stores. Buy Australian. When you are shopping, and I understand people are hurting everywhere, buy three or four items a week… that are Australian made and grown. “Let’s go back to shopping at the fruit market and local butcher. You know where it comes from, it’s Australian and hasn’t been sitting in a shed in the US for the last six months. We have to be more aware. “We are at risk of losing our farmers and eating imported food only. We need to act, and we need to act now. “I had a couple of men just this week in tears saying they don’t know what to do or who to turn to. It’s hard for these people to reach out and ask for help. We want them to ask for help rather than pull a trigger or tie a noose.”
The Australian Government has announced $11.4 million in funding to support the mental health of farmers and their families. Instead of three out of 10 Medicaresupported psychological consultations needing to be in person, all of them will now be able to held over the phone or through Skype under the changes. “These are bleak times and a lot of people find it very hard to cope,’’ Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told AAP. Eligible communities will be able to apply for grants up to $1 million to run mental health programs. Sunshine Coast counsellor Kerrie Atherton, who hosts a free monthly community support event called Stories of Hope, has heard reports of mental health concerns coming from western Queensland. “I have seen such farmers publicly open up on social media over the few months asking us to share their situation and campaign on their behalf for the government to give them greater financial assistance. “Their words are true words of desperation and hopelessness in the hope that people around Australia would come to the realisation that their plight is desperate.” Ms Atherton says while financial support is vital, so too is emotional support. “Everyone needs to know that they are not alone in their time of suffering. “What the community can do is share the plight of farmers on Facebook and on whatever platform they can and continue to get the word out that they need support. “Ideally, to create as many support networks as possible whether that be financial, such as teams like Drought Angels. “No matter how small we may think our contribution is, when we join it all together it turns into something huge. “Continuing to petition the government to create more funding to support them financially would be a very big step.” If you are in need of support, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.

James Blundell and Brewn will perform at the Palmwoods Hotel and $1 from every steak sold during the day and $1 from every schooner of Carlton Dry will be donated to Aussie Helpers. The same donations will be made by the Beerwah Hotel for the next three country nights, on the second Saturday of every month.

DR KARL TO GIVE FREE PUBLIC LECTURE AT USC If there is a perfect time for Australian science guru Dr Karl Kruszelnicki to visit the University of the Sunshine Coast, it’s during National Science Week. The popular science communicator and author of 43 books will deliver a free public lecture on August 13, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the Innovation Centre at USC’s main campus at Sippy Downs. At the event, titled Game Changers and Change Makers, he will also sign books and greet fans as part of National Science Week, which runs from August 11 to 19. A study to find new ways to manage Australia’s changing coastlines will begin soon at the University of the Sunshine Coast after attracting $1 million in funding. The Australian Research Council has awarded Professor Tim Smith of USC’s Sustainability Research Centre a $998,000 Future Fellowship over four years to discover new approaches to coastal management. USC will contribute an additional $662,000 to the study. Professor Smith says current strategies to manage problems like urbanisation and sea level are not working, and short-term solutions like seawalls are simply delaying the inevitable.
STORIES OF HOPE SHARED Every month Kerrie Atherton hosts the free Stories of Hope event at the Sands Tavern in Maroochydore, featuring two guest speakers. The next event will be held on August 28 at 7pm and will include Hugh Butler, who lost his daughter to suicide three years ago. He wants to share his story to raise awareness around mental illness and suicide prevention, while bringing hope to any parent who has also had a child died. Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has brewed up a crafty new fundraising initiative to help support volunteer beach patrols across the state, teaming up with Newstead Brewing Co. to launch a new Coastal Ale, Nineteen 09. Proceeds from the sale of the brew will go back into supporting volunteer surf lifesavers. The craft beer pays tribute to the first recorded rescue in Queensland, on February 21, 1909, when a group of surf lifesavers pulled four women and a man from a treacherous rip at Greenmount Beach on the Gold Coast. WE LEAD THE NATION IN BEACH AND WATERWAY CLEAN-UPS Statistics from the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database have revealed the Sunshine Coast community is leading the nation in its goal to remove litter and debris from our oceans, beaches and waterways. Environment Portfolio councillor Jenny McKay praises the efforts of community volunteers and local schools, which she says has been bolstered with support from Sunshine Coast Council’s marine debris reduction program, which saw more than 2000 kilograms of marine debris removed over 35 beach clean-ups in 2016.

TURF CLUB’S BEST OF THE BEST NAMED With the 2017/18 local racing season complete, the Sunshine Coast Turf Club has announced the annual Caloundra RSL SCTC Premierships winners. Stuart Kendrick took out the trainer category for the fifth consecutive season, having finished with a dominant 20 wins clear of his nearest rival. Jockey Damian Browne clocked up his eighth title in nine years and apprentice jockey Stephanie Lacy took out the Lianne Crook Memorial Shield as the SCTC Apprentice of the Year after winning 23 races at the Turf Club.
A new directory providing support for the almost 900 people in need across the region has been launched by Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Network. Acting Mayor Tim Dwyer says the 2015 Sunshine Coast Social Strategy outlined the council’s social priorities that contribute to a strong community – one that is healthy, smart and creative with our people feeling included, resilient, engaged and treated with respect. The directory, which can be accessed via the council’s website, will also be used to build the knowledge and capacity of the council’s staff, so they can respond appropriately to people experiencing homelessness. COAST’S FIRST TRADE SCHOOL OPENS Sunshine Coast students can now start kickstart their career in Year 10, with the opening of the region’s first trade senior school, the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC). The school aims to give Year 10, 11 and 12 students the Kurt Kliene and Ryan Cotillard opportunity to complete their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) while starting a schoolbased apprenticeship in the trade of their choice. The AITC Sunshine Coast campus has opened with a small Year 10 cohort of 47 students and expects to grow to 200 to 250 students over the next four years.

CHANGE OF PACE For almost a decade, Min Swan has been the Sunshine Coast’s go-to events organiser, but the mum of two is planning a less sociable life in the future, as she aims to spend more quality time with her young family. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
N
ame a charity gala or a big event that’s happened on the Sunshine Coast in the past nine years and chances are, Min Swan has been involved in organising it. Well-known Coast charities and organisations like STEPS, LifeFlight, Cindy Mackenzie Foundation, SunnyKids and Coastline BMW have all benefited from Ms Swan’s magic touch in creating memorable events through her company, White House Celebrations. Ms Swan moved to the Sunshine Coast from Victoria at the age of 16 and went to Maroochydore High. After school, she ran a financial planning business in Brisbane with her partner, who became her husband, followed by three-year stint in Sydney’s corporate world where she “worked hard and played hard”. At the age of 33, she left her Sydney CBD apartment and big salary to return to the Coast and start a family, but was given the news she wouldn’t be able to have children. “We decided to separate for various reasons but we’re still good friends,” she says. “I started White House Celebrations – it was my version of my baby – in 2009. I didn’t really love financial services and decided events was going to be fun. “I threw everything into White House Celebrations, then met my partner when I was 36 and fell pregnant.” Ms Swan was surprised to discover she could have children after all and now has Smith, five, and Paige, one, with partner Grant Goodrem. She’s now trying to create a life that’s more family-friendly, which means slowing down at work. “It was crazy but manageable with Smith, but last year when I had Paige, that totally changed everything,” she says. “I’ve pulled back with White House this year and transferred a number of my clients over to other people. I’m returning to more of my business consulting background. “The majority of the business was large charity events and they’re the ones I don’t do as much of now. During the one I did in March for LifeFlight, Paige was really sick. There’s nothing you can do about it. I just had to offload her to her grandma. I didn’t want to do that anymore. “You just can’t move events. You have 600 people arriving, regardless if your little girl is ill. Now I’m planning to do more
corporate launches and that style of event. I’m in a change phase at the moment. “I haven’t travelled while I’ve been running White House, so our plan is to take the kids overseas every second year, if not every year. Instead of sending them to private schools, we’ll send them to a public school and put the money into educating them on the world.” Ms Swan is clearly a strategic thinker and a planner. She’s the person who has lists upon lists upon lists and loves leading people and helping them reach their goals. It’s one reason she volunteers her time for the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network, an organisation close to her heart. “When I returned to the Coast in 2008, that was the first
place I went to meet people again. I’ve met some of my best friends at the network. I’ve volunteered all sorts of time helping them run their events over the years,’’ she says. “I have mainly worked in male-dominated areas, so I was a bit scared about going into a women’s network. “I didn’t know if it was huge levels of feminists fighting against men – that isn’t something I believe in. I think we should all come together and we can achieve equality together. That’s always been my stance. “We had our strategy meeting recently and were all clear we want a unified approach. Many males support the network.” However, when asked whether it’s still considered necessary to have a business network aimed at women, the answer is a resounding yes. “We still feel there are women that are more comfortable when it’s predominantly women and therefore we can build their confidence,” she says. “If we completely removed the name and were just a business network, it would take the focus away. It needs to be comfortable and focused.” Ms Swan is getting ready to don a glamorous dress and heels for the 20th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards Gala, to be held at the Events Centre in Caloundra tomorrow night. She’s in charge of the events program and is the judging chair, two roles she is volunteering her time for. She says the standard of nominees is high every year, but there’s something different about this year. “What every judge commented on this year was the strength of the young business woman of the year,” she says. “We used to not attract a lot – this year was the most number of applicants. We’ve got eight finalists. It’s a very strong category. They’re all strong, but in comparison to previous years, the young category would be the one that would be really tough to work out who was going to take that home.”

FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR COAST VENUE Lake Kawana Community Centre has had a revamp, signalling a new era for one of the region’s most-loved performance and cultural centres.
W
ith a brand-new look and a brand-new name, Lake Kawana Community Centre is shedding its skin and boldly stepping into a bright future. Guests gathered on August 8 to celebrate the unveiling of the new name – Venue 114 – with a traditional welcome to country and smoking ceremony. They also got their first look at the stunning new murals that adorn the front and back walls as well as concrete seating near the venue entrance. Artists EJ Zyla, David W Houghton and Fuzeillear began work on the vibrant murals on July 25 and had to use scissor lifts to maximise their reach on the eight-metrehigh walls. Splitting into teams, Ms Zyla and Mr Houghton transformed the back wall and seating, while Fuzeillear concentrated on the front wall. Ms Zyla says they centred their artwork on the unique colours found in a naturally occurring pink seaweed that had been photographed by Mr Houghton and created interweaving ribbons of contrasting blue to represent the colour of the ocean and create the illusion of a current, adding energy and

Fuzeillear worked with layers of watereddown paint to create depth and shadows and designed a piece for Venue 114 that draws from the meaning of the aboriginal word Kawana, meaning wild flowers. “The wildflowers are such an important part of this area, so I wanted to ensure they are still preserved despite the amount of
development going on,” she says. “The new name is more dynamic and reflects the way this centre is inclusive of art forms and all people, which is why we wanted to create action and movement without it being connected to a single thing like singing, dancing, something the whole community could enjoy.” August 8 also signalled the opening of
a sustainably-focused espresso bar, aptly named Zest, which promotes healthy eating and healthy minds. Acting Mayor Tim Dwyer says performance and community venues are a valuable asset on the Sunshine Coast and it is important they remain contemporary, providing diverse spaces for diverse events. “Economically, performance and community venues are often seen as an attractor for surrounding investment, growth and economic development, and the renaming ensures the venue remains current and modern to a broader target audience,” he says. Councillor Peter Cox says since 2005 Lake Kawana Community Centre has brought a range of diverse performances to the region from Guy Sebastian to the Queensland Ballet and even Play School, as well as hosting a number of large events. “Socially and culturally, Venue 114 will continue to be a place for interaction and participation in community and cultural life,” he says. “There is no doubt experiencing a show extends beyond the stage, and communities can become invigorated by vibrant and diverse arts and cultural experiences.”

Richard O’Leary says the pretentious one-upmanship associated with selfies is a sign of the times – and not a good one.

than Hunt from Mission: Impossible was my main man crush in my late teens. Considering I was a serial single gal, Tom Cruise was pretty much my boyfriend. Well, in my mind at least. His black turtle necks, penchant for travelling the world as a secret assassin and his ability to complete impossible missions, meant he could cope with a quiet life with me at Caloundra, going to netball once a week and putting out the rubbish on a Monday night. It was also back when Tom Cruise (pre-couch jumping) was the hottest guy in the world and our Nicole snagged him, not just for a roast dinner on a Sunday night, but married him. For young players back in the day, Tom and Nicole were the Harry and Meghan of their era. Then Tom went all cray-cray and embraced Scientology. From there, he has been in the dark abyss of human scorn and some bad movie flops, including Vanilla Sky. Yep, remember that stinker? You may not, which just proves my point. Well, girls, I have exciting news: Tom is hot again after a spell in the not-so-hot camp with the release of the sixth Mission: Impossible movie. I replaced Tom in my twenties and thought Pat Rafter was perfection. In my thirties, my eye wandered to Daniel Craig and Channing Tatum. I have given my heart for most of my forties to any and all of those Hemsworth boys. There is a
bunch of them, can you believe, who all look like that? But forgive me Tom, because you are back in full force and looking mighty fine in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The man is 56 for crying out loud and looks about 36. While the rest of us have become wider and flabbier, he has done a Benjamin Button and looks better than ever. Perhaps the secret is wearing black turtlenecks, travelling the world as a secret assassin and completing those impossible missions. Tom Cruise movies are like the soundtrack to major parts of my life. I will never forget seeing Maverick pash on with Charlie against that wall in Top Gun when I was in Year 12 as Berlin belted out the love song. It was an education. The movie Cocktail was released and I thought it was super sophisticated to drink tequila shots off a stranger’s belly and dance the night away (sorry Mum). The classics rolled on, including Interview With A Vampire and Days Of Thunder (to me it was sort of a classic). Eyes Wide Shut gave me a different sort of education, as Tom and Nicole lost the plot and their clothing. And don’t we all remember watching Rainman and Jerry McGuire? The quote, “You had me at hello” is still part of pop culture vocabulary. Tom Cruise has infiltrated our lives on many levels for four decades. Now that is an impossible mission.

haven’t had an angry old man yelling at clouds rant for a while (the meditation must be working), but did you read the story about the sunflower farm which had to close because more than 7000 selfie-seeking tourists descended on the property, trampling the plants and causing traffic chaos? Now, I love sunflowers as much as the next guy, whether they are planted in a field, come in a bunch or are hung on a wall with Van Gogh scribbled in the corner – but not in this lifetime will you see me drive hundreds of kilometres to take a selfie with them. But that’s what these crazy Canadians did in their thousands. Like zombies, they emerged from their suburban homes, got in their cars and arms outstretched to the steering wheels, found their way to the fields of yellow and that perfect pic to put on Facebook or Instagram, so all their friends could ooh and aah. What sort of a society do we live in where the pinnacle of artistic and personal achievement is taking a photo of yourself next to something amazing? Is the hope that you will become cool by association? (Sorry for the use of the word cool – I know it’s not really cool to say cool anymore, but this is an old man rant after all). I know some people will say this focus on self is just another form of selfexpression, but in reality, it is self-
indulgent, self-absorbing, self-important, self-abusing, self-deceiving, self-obsessed, self-flattering, self-defeating, selfgratifying, self-delusional, self-important, self-righteous, self-centred, selfcongratulating, self-seeking behaviour wrapped in self-loathing, and probably a form of self-medicating. Maybe those wanting to take selfies should consider some self-acceptance and some self-reflection. Sorry for this sounding a little like a sermon, but I think a society based on self at the expense of others is doomed to shallowness, insincerity and ultimately collapse. A focus on self is healthy if it is about being a better person, not showing everyone else why we are better than them. Do we fear that other people will think we are so boring and dull that we have to premeditate fabulous backdrops to make ourselves look more important and happy than we really are? Hemingway has this great quote which pre-dates selfies (obviously), but which I think perfectly fits this subject. “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility lies in being superior to your former self.” So rather than take another selfie, why don’t you go and take a good look in the mirror, and wake up to yourself?

A HEALTHY START TO THE YEAR
D
espite a modest year-to-date rise in the Australian market, major price benchmarks are inching closer to their record 2007 peak, which occurred just ahead of the tumultuous effects of the 2008 financial crisis. Importantly, though, accumulation indices – which measure total return by combining price movements and dividends – continue to set new records, having exceeded the previous 2007 peak in 2013. While two major sectors, financials and telecommunications, have struggled this year, large parts of the Australian market have forged ahead. The standout has been the healthcare sector, which has risen 28 per cent on an accumulation basis. The sector’s benchmark performance has largely been a function of one stock,
CSL, whose market capitalisation went from $63 billion to $89 billion, which means it is now the fourth-largest stock in the Australian market. Other healthcare stocks such as ResMed, Cochlear and Sonic have also performed admirably, but their market caps are less influential. At the other end of the scale, Ramsay Healthcare has fallen from grace as structural changes in the private hospital sector bite, including softening private health insurance coverage. IT is also travelling well, although it accounts for only a small fraction of the market’s overall capitalisation. Consumer staples, on the other hand, is a large sector with Woolworths and Wesfarmers showing nice gains as supermarket margins stabilise. The sector has also experienced strength from smaller food producers such as A2 Milk and Bellamy’s. Resources stocks are also doing well as commodity prices experience support, leading to meaningful profit upgrades by analysts. The sector has staged a strong recovery since the depths of the commodity cycle – at its low point in early 2016 resources represented just 11 per cent of the S&P/ASX 200’s market capitalisation, but today it stands at 19 per cent. The effects of rising bond yields are clearly evident in sectors with bond-like
characteristics, such as property and utilities. Threats of higher bond yields will continue to limit the performance of these sectors. Banks are facing numerous headwinds, including higher wholesale funding costs as US interest rates rise, greater regulatory oversight and a slowing credit market. While many point to the sector’s dividend yield as support, the sector remains soft nonetheless as profits struggle to grow. This leads us to the telecommunications sector, and Telstra in particular. After three years of weakening share prices, the outlook for the sector remains challenging, with the disruptive nature of the NBN rollout, ballooning capital expenditure and intense competition. This has led to contracting profits and dividends. It is difficult to assess what the sector will look like in the medium to longer term, and so it is difficult to promote the sector with conviction despite considerably lower share prices.

We prefer companies that have the balance sheet room to pursue growth options or return capital to shareholders, including ANZ Bank, Alumina and Service Stream. Inflation beneficiaries – Companies such as AGL Energy, Oil Search and Qube Holdings have the ability to offset global inflation and local disinflationary forces.
THEMES FOR 2018
Structural growth – These are companies that may not deliver earnings upside in the near term, but provide leverage to longer-term structural trends. Austal, a shipbuilder, provides exposure to increased defence spending, while Transurban, the world’s largest toll road operator, taps into the growing demand for infrastructure in major cities.
Global over local – Even though earnings forecasts in Australia have improved recently, global earnings and GDP continue to expand at a faster pace. Combining this with our currency outlook, having some globally exposed companies still makes sense. Our preferences in this category

A Sunshine Coast couple creates magical outdoor dinners that educate and inspire the diners who take part.

Launched by Elizabeth Craig-Holmes and Tony Holmes in March last year, People, Plates & Places offers foodies an experience for all of the senses, with a long table set up in the middle of a lush paddock, a five-course meal featuring produce sourced from local farmers and perfectly paired wines. Mrs Craig-Holmes says the only sounds you can hear during one of their popular events are conversation and laughter. The couple goes to great lengths to ensure the menu for each event is unique and crafted to suit the environment of the dinner rather than being a simple seasonal menu. They have hosted dinners on their Montville property as well as venturing to other stunning locations with the assistance of their purpose-built kitchen, which packs down flat and is assembled on site and contains everything a chef needs to prepare, cook and serve the delectable five-course meals on site. “We take absolutely everything with us from the kitchen trailer to the tables, water, seats, portaloos, generators, everything,” Mrs Craig-Holmes says. “Farmers are the key to our food chain. We put people together to enjoy good food, good wine and good company and in that process, they learn something from the farmer, or the wine-maker or the craft brewer. “It’s all underpinned with learning and it is one of the best learning environments

They’re hanging up mini macrame thingos called ‘dream catchers’ and getting about the place sprouting incredible mantras like ‘Stop saying I wish and start saying I will’, ‘If you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine’, ‘Turn your wounds into wisdom’, ‘When it rains, look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars’, ‘Every flower must grow through dirt’ and yadda yadda yadda, what a load of bollocks. Sure they’re all dreamy, wistful sayings that look great on a fancy calendar or a coffee shop sandwich board, but where are the everyday reality-check sayings that we can actually all relate to? Introducing Toddy’s ‘real-life mottos’ to help get you through the day. In an off-balance, selfie-obsessed world where we have even allowed someone to invent high-heel Crocs. Yes you read right, I think they’re called ‘Creels’ (just another
example of us stepping further away from the light of Jesus and into the darkness of hell). So we need to right ourselves with some everyday stabilising mantras that everyone can dig. The Wildflower Restaurant food, beverage and events manager says she’s always had a passion for both food and looking after people. “It will be three years this November when Best Western Plus Lake Kawana Hotel opened its doors on the Sunshine Coast. I actually got to assist in naming our now popular restaurant Wildflower,” Ms Bell says. “My lifelong passion for food, cooking and entertaining has shaped, and continues to shape, my career.” Ms Bell is a firm believer that if you can read, you can cook and encourages everyone to try new recipes.
Chad Fedele created this delectable dish and has been the head chef at Tides Waterfront Dining for three years. Mr Fedele found inspiration for this dish from his desire to keep things fresh and simple. The special technique is the mirror glaze, which is a super-reflective sweet coating over the mousse made from white chocolate and condensed milk. It provides the dish’s overall brightness and gives the dish its stunning imagery. The mousse dome is also hiding the blood orange jelly inside, which bursts upon cutting, revealing the full flavour of the blood orange. The dish will be available throughout winter while the blood orange and citrus fruits are in peak condition.

STYLISH ENTERTAINING Australia has undergone somewhat of a kitchen revolution with many of us opting to stay in and entertain from home on a more regular basis. WHEN FOOD MEETS INTERIOR DESIGN When hosting a dinner party, the table setting can be almost as important as the food. Tick off this design list to ensure your night is one to remember.
PRETTY POSIES
THEME Choose dishes that complement each other as well as the linen. Sharp, angular plates will soften against natural materials such as linen in blush or peach tones. It is also wise to choose a colour theme for the overall style. It’s fun to theme your table setting around the food. Dishing out Mexican? Then choose design elements to suit. Serving classic cocktails and canapes? Opt for a classic 1920s-themed setting.
Do you feel as though you haven’t got that creative touch that all florists seem to have mastered? That’s okay, because almost anyone can create a beautiful, yet simple table centrepiece. Invest in a vase – vintage or modern, depending on your theme – and arrange soft pastel-coloured flowers such as hydrangeas, peonies or roses. EXPERT ADVICE Sunshine Coast real estate agent and auctioneer Grant Smith adds another feather in his cap after winning a major auctioneering award.

uderim real estate agent Grant Smith has just been announced as the number one Century 21 auctioneer in Australasia. The award was highly contested and judged by an expert panel who were looking for style, confidence, engagement, sincerity and knowledge. Mr Smith will add the award to his already long list of industry achievements. Here, he talks to My Property Preview about the win and what he sees happening in the Sunshine Coast property market. How did it feel to be named number one auctioneer in Australasia for the Century 21 organisation? It was an honour. When I submitted my application I knew it would be a strong competition across the entire Australasian network. There are so many great auctioneers across Australia and New Zealand alone, so to receive the award as voted by an independent panel was a great surprise. Can you hazard a guess as to how many auctions you have called? This one has me thinking. I would have to say it would be over 300 auctions, I became an auctioneer when I was 19. I would also say I have called over 100 auctions for charity. It’s a skill that can be
shared to assist in raising money for some wonderful local causes. My most memorable auctions would be one I did for charity at Parliament House Brisbane. In your opinion, what are the key ingredients for a successful auction? It’s definitely honesty, rapport and communication. Every auction is different so in the lead-up, it’s important to explain to both buyers and sellers what to expect on the day and how to go about the process. Do you think auctions are embraced by more property sellers and buyers? I think more sellers are understanding why it can be
the best method. The market is always changing and as real estate agents, even with 14 years’ selling experience, there are still a lot of homes you can’t pick the exact sale price for. How would you describe the property market climate on the Coast? The market is always changing. The first quarter was the peak of the market in the past 18 months. As we are currently at the end of financial year and winter, we are seeing less heat in the market and buyers are not reacting as quickly. As tradition has it, this is no surprise as June and July are generally the quietest
times of year. Activity tends to increase as we roll into spring over August and September. Where do you see the property market going in the next 12 months? It is always the million-dollar question. However, I think we see stability for the balance of the year. Our region is experiencing so much growth and a consistent demand. What is your advice to sellers considering an auction? Don’t dismiss the process before understanding the benefits it could relay in your property sale. I don’t believe every sale is suitable to an auction but if I feel it will generate the best result for a seller I will certainly advocate and explain the process. Most importantly, not every agent is experienced in the auction process so make sure you engage an agent who is confident and understands the process. What is your advice to buyers who might be new to the auction process? Request a building and pest and a contract. Make yourself known to the agent, so you can discuss the process. As agents we want to assist you in purchasing a property. It is a very transparent way to purchase a property as you know what you are bidding against. Most of all, bid with confidence by going in knowing what your limit is.

MARKETING CREATES SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN The auction of a Yaroomba four-bedroom home has been hailed as a huge success after attracting 150 people.
T
he number of cars lined up outside 1 Yinneburra Street, Yaroomba may have had neighbours thinking there was a major family reunion of sorts going on. Instead, it was the culmination of a three-week marketing campaign that attracted 150 people to the auction of the property, which was sold under the hammer for almost $200,000 over the reserve price. Agent Greg Moore from North Shore Realty says the 10 registered bidders came from a range of areas and consisted of nine Sunshine Coast locals and one person vying for the property from Hong Kong. In the end, it was a Coast resident who, while holidaying in New Zealand and bidding over the phone, purchased the property for $1.93 million. “Bidding was somewhat slow to start, with four parties bidding until declared that it was on the market,” Mr Moore says. “It ended with two bidders fighting it out for the last few hundred thousand.” He says the successful combination of half-page ads in My Property Preview and an online listing cast the net far and wide, resulting in more than 26 groups coming along to the first open home and a total of
