emories from a holiday to South-East Asia floated into my mind while sitting in our boat off Bribie Island recently. I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between water quality here and abroad. The beautiful aqua blue water of the Andaman Sea was sadly littered with plastic bottles and bags. At home, in the pristine Pumicestone Passage, it is rare to see rubbish bobbing in the water. The Passage was awarded a B+ or ‘good’ rating in the 2016 Healthy Waterways Report Card. This result comes from a combined effort of residents and the Sunshine Coast Council. The Coast’s waterways are a source of pride for many people, among them, Steph Gabriel, who fashions bikinis out of recycled plastic and Andrew Turton, co-creator of the Seabin. You can read more about their environmentally-focussed projects in this week’s cover story. Also this week, we talk with finance expert Cheryl McNaught ahead of her visit to the Coast for a workshop hosted by My Weekly Preview; and we have our regular beauty, travel and property sections. Originally from Geelong, Kelsey Browne now lives at Parrearra and plays wing attack/centre for the Sunshine Coast’s first national sports team, the Lightning. FIRST JOB?
FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST?
Ice-cream scooper at a milk bar and games arcade in Lorne, Victoria.
I haven’t had enough time yet to explore what this amazing place has to offer, but I already have a long list of adventures and places I’d love to tick off. I enjoy spending time at Point Cartwright for its magnificent views and long beach. It’s not too busy, it has a gorgeous walking track and often I go and watch the sunset there with the beach to myself.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? We are in the full swing of our training schedule for the Lightning at the moment, so with the limited spare time we get, I’m working on a few projects to shine a light on netball on the Coast and also towards completing my Bachelor of Media/ Communications. I’m a keen musician as well, so to keep the balance off the court, I love to create my own music and play my instruments a little every day.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Giving up piano lessons at age eight. I never practised and told my parents I hated it so much I would probably rather do my homework. I didn’t realise that trying to learn a new skill as an adult is much harder.

Mum (Chris) and Dad (Mark) who are my biggest supporters. Without their continued encouragement, sacrifice and love I wouldn’t be where I am today. My sister Madison, who also plays in the Suncorp Super Netball League with the Collingwood Magpies and has been my biggest motivator and my partner, Mitch, who has recently made the sea change from Melbourne to join me on the Coast. Moving states to play my sport means moving away from my loved ones, but I couldn’t be more grateful to have them in my life.
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Some of the girls call me Kevin but KB is probably the most common. My dad also calls me Wol.
FIRST CAR? A Nissan Pulsar that I named Percy Pulsar.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
FAVOURITE BOOK?
I moved to the Coast because I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity with the Sunshine Coast Lightning. I jumped at the chance because of the amazing beaches and wonderful lifestyle up here and the climate. Since moving I have realised the Coast is so much more than that. The community is full of passionate people who have got behind its first ever elite sporting team and for that reason I have fallen in love with this place even more.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Unleashing Greatness by David Galbraith. We were so fortunate to have DG fly over from NZ and spend some quality time with the team. I was in awe of his theories about psychology in sport and life.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Three months, nine days.
Moving states. I was quite comfortable in Melbourne and had a great support network down there so to step out of that comfort zone has allowed me to grow up and pursue some goals that I may never have had the chance to do if I didn’t take the plunge. Buying a block of land and being an inaugural member of the Sunny Coast Lightning are also two things I’m proud of achieving since living in Queensland.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m surrounded by family and friends, Playing music, driving down the Great Ocean Road in summer with awesome music and even better company.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Hang in there kid. Everything happens for a reason. Work hard, be thankful for what you have and make the most of whatever decisions you make. They won’t always be the right ones, but if they don’t work out they’ll teach you a lot. That’s the best part.
TEA OR COFFEE? I like both, but coffee definitely wins by a country mile. I take a flat white or a cappuccino if I’m feeling a little cheeky. No sugar though, I’m sweet enough.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
NRL OR AFL?
To ‘empty the tank’. Whatever it is you’re doing, put 100 per cent into it. If you continually do that you’ll never be disappointed with the result.
AFL every day of the week. I’m born and bred in Geelong and my dad played 87 games for the Catters so I’m a Cats girl through and through.

OUR LOCAL WASTE INNOVATORS Plastic is taking over the environment faster than Donald Trump can write executive orders, but there are Sunshine Coast innovators who are taking sustainability to a new level and saving our marine life in the process. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane shares their stories in the lead up to Clean Up Australia Day.

n the past 26 years, Australians have devoted more than 31 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected more than 331,000 tonnes of rubbish. With March 5 fast approaching, the call is once again going out to Sunshine Coast residents to set aside a morning to join a green army dedicated to cleaning up our public spaces. While all manner of weird items from false teeth to entire couches have been found by volunteers during past clean ups, Clean Up Australia Day statistics show plastic is by far the most common category of rubbish collected each year. About half a million plastic shopping bags, an average of 40 at each clean-up site, are collected around the country and as much as a third of all rubbish collected each year is plastic. Not only is it an unsightly blemish on our pristine green spaces, but plastic is killing off marine life and native wildlife at unprecedented rates. Ocean Crusaders estimate 100,000 marine creatures die each year from plastic entanglement and around one million sea birds die as a result of interactions with the material. It is a heartbreaking statistic for Alexandra Headland’s Steph Gabriel, who

founded OceanZen Bikini after seeing first-hand how plastic is destroying the Earth. Gabriel has been involved with some incredible research projects around the world and went on to gain a degree in Environmental Marine Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast before she began designing and selling bikinis made from recycled plastic bottles and fishing nets that are collected from the ocean. The 27-year-old now splits her time between continuing her environmental awareness and conservation work with the successful bikini brand. “I wanted to have my own voice for sustainability and began to research ways I could create a sustainable brand that represented my lifestyle,” Gabriel tells My Weekly Preview. “Through my research, I had discovered a creative and innovative way of combining both of my passions; marine conservation and swimwear together. “The fishing nets and plastic bottles are cleaned, shredded and recreated into a very fine yarn, which is 100 per cent sustainable and then mixed with lycra to make a soft fabric. We then design and create amazing and sustainable bikinis from this.” The eye-catching bikinis were launched in Maroochydore in early 2014 and quickly
gained popularity. Gabriel now dispatches her bikinis internationally on a regular basis and describes bumping into a British woman wearing one of her bikinis in Bali as one of her favourite moments. Her profile was boosted last year after OceanZen Bikini received an Ethical and Sustainability Award at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival and Gabriel was also named a finalist for Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Gabriel says she is the first to admit her lifestyle is not 100 per cent plastic-free, but she hopes her stunning bikinis and OceanZen’s annual expeditions with groups of women to Tonga to swim with wild humpback whales will keep raising awareness about keeping our oceans clean, and to continue to encourage people to start saying no to plastic bags and plastic bottles. “I am a firm believer that the little things you do can help make a big difference for our environment,” she says. Another Sunshine Coast local making a huge environmental statement on the world stage is former Buddina Beach resident Andrew Turton and business partner Peter Ceglinski from Byron Bay. The pair has taken the world by storm
with their ingenious Seabin, an automated rubbish bin that pumps water into a basket, catching floating debris, oil, fuel and detergents without disturbing marine life. Now based in Spain, Turton and Ceglinski have secured agreements with the Port Adriano in Mallorca and Porto Montenegro to pilot the Seabin Project in the prestigious marinas in collaboration

Students will be able to see what is collected by the Seabin and use this information in conjunction with the lessons to learn more about plastic pollution and the effects on the environment. “It was a pretty crazy idea really,” Turton says of his invention. “I always thought it was such a simple thing. I’d never ever seen a rubbish bin in the water. “My whole thing with this Seabin is just trying to get it out there and letting people know we are all responsible for our waste. My ultimate goal is to see it all around the world, but I hope we’re not going to need them eventually – if we could create an environment where we didn’t need the Seabin, it would be really something.”

People can be selfish when it comes to the environment and think if it doesn’t directly affect them or their family, they don’t have to worry. “But there are micro particles of plastic in the ocean, which are ingested by the fish that we then eat, so we are all affected.” The next few years will be huge in terms of change when it comes to plastics for Queensland. SCEC has been working closely with the Boomerang Alliance and the State Government on the implementation of a container deposit scheme, which will see Queensland residents able to receive a small rebate for recycled items.

Hays says there are dozens of environmental groups across the Coast who were making a difference to our natural assets every day, but she is concerned the number of Coast residents participating in events like Clean Up Australia Day is not increasing in line with our population growth. “There were 1100 people participating across the Coast last year, and that is a tiny

WHEN PLASTIC BECOMES HIGH FASHION British actor Emma Watson used the 2016 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit Gala to highlight the pollution caused by plastics. How? By wearing a Calvin Klein and Eco Age dress made entirely from plastic bottles. “The body of the gown is crafted from three different fabrics, all woven from yarns made from recycled plastic bottles,” Watson explained on Facebook. “Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet. Being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the Met Gala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together.”
Beerburrum beekeepers Ann and Jeff Ross are perfecting a beehive design made from recycled plastic. They’ve chosen to manufacture their Hive Havens for native stingless bees from recycled plastic because it is hardy, low maintenance and is resistant to sporebased diseases, which are harmful to bees. They source the 100 per cent recycled materials from Brisbane company Dotmar and 3D print the accessories like the hive entrance, and pillars from polylactic acid. This biodegradable type of plastic is manufactured out of plant-based resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. The award-winning Hive Havens are not yet available for purchase, but are being tested to become market-ready.

LEARN ABOUT MONEY Coast2Bay Housing and the Salvation Army are hosting a free workshop to educate Sunshine Coast residents about financial planning and how to save money. This year’s Noosa Festival of Surfing will be the most attended festival in the event’s 26-year history. Around 850 surfers will flock to the beach at First Point, Noosa. Although spots in heats have been filling up fast, there are still a handful of spots in the senior men’s divisions, and both the Teams and Noosa Civic Family Challenge divisions are still open. This year’s line-up boasts a greater variety of divisions and a broader demographic than in previous years, making it easily the biggest surfing event in the world. The festival runs from March 4 to 11.
TIME FOR YOUTH TO SPEAK UP Young people from all walks of life have been invited to get involved in the Speak Up Engage program. Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says the 2017 program will offer project management experience, free formal professional and personal development training and mentoring opportunities to young people aged between 12 and 25. “One of the key benefits of being involved in this unique program will be working with council staff to create a new Youth Action Plan that will identify the needs, experiences and interests of young people and shape how we support young people in the future,” she says. FIRST STAGE OF BELLS CREEK ARTERIAL ROAD COMPLETE A ceremony to mark the completion of the first stage of the muchanticipated Bells Creek Arterial Road was held at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast last week. Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey, who attended the official opening of the 2.8-kilometre stretch, says the milestone marks the Stage 1 completion of access to Aura, Australia’s largest master-planned city. The $30 million road is the main access into Aura’s first suburb of Baringa and will provide a welcome second access for the existing communities of Bells Reach and Bellvista.
$4.2 MILLION ROUNDABOUT UPGRADES TO IMPROVE HOSPITAL ACCESS Works are underway to improve the capacity of four roundabouts on Kawana Way to improve traffic access to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Roundabouts at the intersections of Kawana Way with Jamaica Way, Kawana Island Boulevard and Premier Circuit have been upgraded, and work is underway at Metier Linkway, to include two through lanes for Kawana Way. The work is being delivered under a $22-million Palaszczuk Government funding package to improve access to the hospital before it opens in March.
Work has begun on a $4.2-million Caloundra social housing project. The housing development on Osterley Avenue will employ around 80 tradies including carpenters, block layers, concreters, plumbers, painters, landscapers and electricians, and will provide work for 10 apprentices until completion in December 2017. Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni says the 16 one-bedroom units will be serviced by a lift and built in line with the national liveable housing design guidelines to service seniors and people with a disability.
FIRST STAGE OF ACTVE THEME PARK APPROVED The Sunshine Coast is a step closer to a new tourist attraction after the Sunshine Coast Council approved the first stage of the ACTVE Waterpark. This will include the water park, The Cove main hub area and The Great Lawn multi-purpose area. Developer Sanad Capital is planning three more stages at the Steve Irwin Way site, including a hotel. The council’s approval includes conditions the park cannot open outside the hours of 9am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday and the development must implement the use of solar power or other non-polluting, renewable energy sources, to supply part or all of the park’s energy needs. It must also provide a minimum of 470 car parking spaces and nine bus parking spaces on site.

FROM RIO TO GRASSROOTS SWIMMING LESSONS Two Sunshine Coast elite swimming coaches are taking their passion for swimming into the learn-to-swim arena. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I
t’s not often you get not one, but two Olympic swimming coaches running a learn-to-swim program. University of the Sunshine Coast Spartans swimming coaches Chris Mooney and Jan Cameron have 60 years of coaching experience between them and they’re now bringing their decades of experience to the Sunshine Coast community. The pair spent a year designing their Babies to Olympians program, which is now running at the newly renovated Matthew Flinders Anglican College aquatic centre. It’s open to the general public and offers free lessons for babies under six months of age. “We had a tragic Christmas with children drowning and that’s been sitting on my mind,� Mooney says. “For that six months and under group, it’s more about getting them introduced to the water so when they come of age they’re more compliant with skills and drills and it’s not such a shock. It’s not just teaching the baby, it’s teaching the parents at that stage as well. “We’re a little bit boutiquey in regards to the amount of sessions we offer for each level. We’re aware children who are 11 or 12 are in different sports, or doing music and dance. We have found if you neglect those, it

They’ll suffer burnout or just lose the love of the sport if we don’t progress them in a nurtured way. “I just really enjoy the fact that you get little Sammy three times a week and talk to him about his soccer game on the weekend or how he’s going with his guitar, talk to him about other interests but when we’re in the water, we have a technique focus and skills focus to create that quality control. Hopefully that makes my job a lot easier when they get older.� Mooney and Cameron aren’t teaching the lessons themselves, they instead employ staff

members to run the program, but Mooney says he’ll be popping in a few afternoons a week when he has time off from the high performance program at USC. Both coaches came back from the Rio Olympics and Paralymics with their swimmers brandishing medals, so is the new program about scouting for Australia’s next Olympic swimming star? “Having been down that track ourselves, we are always aware of talent but it’s about more than talent, it’s making sure every child in the program has the skills they need and they can make decisions about how far they
want to go,� says Paralympic coach Cameron. “We’re not starting from the top end, we’re starting from the bottom end. Making the babies to six months free – that’s a huge thing for us. We’re taking the hit on paying our staff and receiving no money, but we feel it’s very important for our contribution to safety in the community. “Chris and I have a similar concept of long-term athlete development and making sure children have really good skills and technique before they progress further.� The Sunshine Coast Sports Federation recently named Cameron Coach of the Year, an honour that came at an apt time. After 40 years as an on-deck coach, she’s moving into a role as a mentor coach for Paralympics Australia. Cameron hands the baton of head coach of the Spartans Paralympic team to Nathan Doyle, a Paralympic gold medallist. “He’ll bring a new energy to the program,� she says. “I still retain my coaching love and I’m very proud to be handing over a group of young men to Nathan. “That’s why it’s so exciting Chris and I are doing this venture, going from the top end and going right back down to babies and children. It’s a really exciting program.�

LOOKING AT THE YEAR AHEAD Chris Harris, from Ord Minnett in Buderim, examines the world economy and global growth for 2017.
I
n a recent article we outlined our view for the Australian stock exchange and Aussie dollar for 2017. Here, we discuss our view of the global economy. Following a brief bounce out of the 2008 global recession, growth has persistently disappointed forecasters’ expectations, failing to deliver on the normal cyclical pattern of downturns followed by sustained above-trend expansion in growth. At the same time, in the face of a multitude of threatening shocks, ranging from geopolitical (the Arab Spring, Russian incursions, Brexit), to credit (Euro sovereign crisis, EM credit), to commodities (an oil price collapse), global growth has remained remarkably stable.
From 2011 to 2016, global growth remained in a roughly two to three per cent range. We expect global growth to pick up modestly from the recent pace, but do not see it breaking the three per cent upper bound of recent years. Instead, the most significant action is expected to come from a normalisation of inflation and a narrowing of regional and sectoral divides. In particular: • Inflation rises close to a percentage point to 2.4 per cent in 2017. • A rebound in profits: Disinflation along with weaker productivity growth has depressed corporate profits, but as inflation re-emerges, profits should rebound. • A modest pickup in investment: Stronger GDP and profit growth are necessary conditions to deliver a recovery in business spending. • United States: We are looking for 2.1 per cent real GDP growth in a year that will be an interesting one. The first and most obvious reason it should be interesting is the election of Donald Trump, an outcome that could usher in sweeping changes to

tax, trade, immigration, and regulatory policies. However, there is another reason economic developments in 2017 should prove to be interesting: the economy is now operating at full employment in a negative real interest rate environment. Wage inflation, which has already begun to pick up, should accelerate further as a result. We are mindful that protectionist trade policies could spark retaliatory measures by other countries that could leave everyone worse off. For now, we are keeping that as a downside risk to growth, not part of our base case. • Emerging markets doing better, but not

A subdued expansion in developed markets and tight credit availability are factors limiting the expansion of these regions. • China: As in previous years, the government will aim to achieve a fine balance between stable growth, economic restructuring, and financial stability. Ongoing structural adjustment and cyclical downturn will produce 6.4 per cent annual growth. SIGNS OF THE TIMES Times Square is the ultimate sensory overload, says Michael Wayne – AAP.
M
y friend said she’d meet me at a cafe in Times Square in 20 minutes. “Meet me under the big sign,” she said. Thanks, that really narrows it down. And so I find a spot by one of Times Square’s many big signs, and I quickly drift into observation mode as life in New York City passes by in a non-stop parade. The streets that feed into the square are like arteries from hell, doomed to pump the
lifeblood of the city into its big, black heart for all eternity. That plasma is all around me, swearing, laughing, screaming, sweating, consuming and yapping away into phones. Just standing here is a sensory rush, and it doesn’t take long for my overwhelmed mind to retreat into the past. Back in the day, this was Longacre Square. It wouldn’t become ‘Times Square’ until the New York Times newspaper moved into No.1 Times Square in 1907. They didn’t stay long,
but like so much gum on the footpaths here, the name stuck. Years of glamour and unashamed commercialism preceded the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Art deco hotels and innovative advertising techniques thrust Times Square into the spotlight of the world. Since then the square has endured depressions, recessions, world wars and the age of terror, reinventing itself every few years. Times Square is the face of NYC: if it’s dirty, chances are the city itself has been playing in the mud. At the height of the square’s destitution, it was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. So when NYC began to clean up its image in the early 1990s, the work began in Times Square. There’s rising opposition to what’s been called the Disneyfication of the square since 9/11. How could they say that about this place, which is home to the world’s largest Disney store? I came here five years ago to eat at Planet Hollywood. Take a moment and think about that: I’m the first person ever to admit to wanting to go there. A friend and I had been dying to check out the movie memorabilia we’d heard so much about for so long, and we weren’t disappointed. Most of the props are from the films of the restaurant’s founders: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester
Stallone. It’s cliche to say, but until you’ve eaten middling chicken and broccoli pasta underneath a full-size rendering of a nude Sly Stallone frozen in ice (as seen in 1993’s Demolition Man), you haven’t lived. Walking the streets of Times Square is an exercise in frustration, hilarity and pure amazement. We’ve all heard of the Naked Cowboy and the endless parade of Marvel Comics characters, but it’s the everyday people who are the most fascinating. It’s easy to lose a few hours to people watching. Couples perpetually arguing in fluent Noo Yawk-speak, sightseers taking a hundred photos of the same Coke sign, cops eating pizza. So many walking cliches, but they’re so indelible that it’s clear why they became cliches in the first place. They’re all here in this astonishing place every day. It’s nothing to them. The bombardment of advertising, the overkill, the massive power bills… it’s just their city. Here more than anywhere on the planet, you’re not special; you’re just another grain of sand on the beach of life. Time stands still, even while nobody else here can. Nobody but me. Where is she? A tap on my shoulder pulls me out of the past. There’s my friend, sitting at the table behind me. “How long have you been here?” I ask. Twenty minutes is the answer. Amid all the blood and thunder, we’d missed each other.

Back in November, I was very proud to be able to partner with my friends at SunnyKids for the inaugural Sunshine Coast Mayoral Ball at our Events Centre, Caloundra. Overall we raised $64,000 thanks to the generosity of more than 300 guests who enjoyed a fabulous night which was all about looking good, feeling good and doing good. What made the evening even more special was that it fell on White Ribbon Day. I’m honoured to be both an ambassador for White Ribbon Day and a patron of Sunnykids – they share very similar values and objectives. White Ribbon has the vision that all women should be able to live in safety, free from violence and abuse, and highlights that women’s safety is a man’s issue too. They are important messages. Last week, thanks to the funds raised from the Mayoral Ball, we were able to make a $2500 donation to White Ribbon’s Sunshine Coast chapter. There will also be donations for STEMM, Riding for the Disabled and USC Bursary. My thanks go to everyone who played a role in making the inaugural Mayoral Ball such a success.

A BETTER BRIDGE The latest bridge constructed as part of council’s $253 million Capital Works Program is a concrete structure on Wegner Road in North Arm, which improves safety, reduces maintenance costs and minimises flooding risks. Around 70 metres of road on either side of the bridge was also sealed and new guardrails installed.

$605 MILLION DEAL FOR AIRPORT Palisade Investment Partners will be the Sunshine Coast Airport’s commercial operating partner in a deal worth more than half a billion dollars. Under the deal, the airport will continue to be owned by Sunshine Coast Council, with Palisade operating the asset under a 99-year lease. Palisade will be responsible for operating, investing and developing the airport and will oversee future negotiations with airlines to expand both domestic and international routes available from the Sunshine Coast. Under the terms of the deal, council will maintain responsibility for facilitating the proposed airport expansion project, which includes construction of a new runway, apron expansion and related infrastructure. The total value to the Sunshine Coast community is an estimated $605 million. “This reflects not only the fact that our airport is a high quality asset in one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, but also the enormous growth potential that it will deliver once the proposed airport expansion project is completed in 2020,” Mayor Mark Jamieson said.

The agreement includes $290 million to be paid for the construction of the new runway to be complete in 2022. Council will retain a financial interest in the operation of the Sunshine Coast Airport by way of an annual rental payment of five per cent of gross revenue, conservatively equating to about $205 million over the
99-year life of the lease starting in 2017/18. Palisade will also take responsibility for future terminal development, thereby reducing the projected cost to council of the airport expansion project by $28 million. A transition steering committee will be established, comprising representatives from both Palisade and council.

LEARN THE SECRETS OF FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE Money expert Cheryl Macnaught will visit the Coast in March for an event aimed at increasing financial security for women. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
E
ver since Cheryl Macnaught purchased her first block of land for $260 at the age of 16, she has been learning about money, a journey that led her to a long and esteemed career in the financial planning industry. The former director and co-founder of Whittaker Macnaught, a financial planning firm that had six branches across Queensland and 100 staff members, is looking forward to sharing her story and financial strategies with Sunshine Coast women at a one-off International Women’s Day event. “I saved up and bought a block at Birkdale in Brisbane,� she says of her first foray into investment. “It was a block of land behind where my Nan lived. She was retiring and was renting – she never owned her own home. My mother and I used to visit her most weekends. My mother was a very astute businesswoman and a wonderful role model for me over the years. “It was lovely at the age of 16 to think I owned something like that. Once I got a car when I was 17, I would go down there on a weekend and just sit outside this vacant block and work out in my mind what kind of house I was going to build.� As it turned out, that dream never eventuated. She got married a few years later, sold the block for $3000 around 10 years after buying it. She then moved to Western Australia, where her husband worked as a mechanic and she started her own businesses selling children’s clothing and furniture, and top-notch sewing machines, products that were hard to come by in Dampier. She also set up the first daycare centre in the Pilbara, which is still operating today. Macnaught and her husband planned to return to Brisbane after five years with $25,000, but it was ten years before they returned, with four children in tow and not quite the money they’d hoped for. “That’s something I’m going to talk about,� she says. “You can have plans but always make certain you’re flexible enough that if circumstances change you can change with them, as long as you’re still working towards your goal.� Macnaught wants to empower women to become financially independent and approaches the subject from a holistic perspective – she looks at the whole lifestyle, rather than giving straight investment advice. “It’s a matter of discipline and keeping a note of every cent you spend,� she says. “People think, I can’t be bothered, but if you’re not going to help yourself, how are
as children. I believe it’s our fault, to be honest. We’ve given them too much, too soon. We’ve not taught them the basics of budgeting. My children saw me budgeting every Saturday morning – I used to put the money in envelopes and then I opened up separate bank accounts. One was for holidays, one was for school expenses and so on. “Today, people are spending more than they’re earning and that’s where credit cards come in. Little children today see their parents pull out the plastic. They’re not seeing their parents budgeting. Money management should be one of the subjects taught in schools. I’ve been saying that for many years. When children are given pocket money they need to put away not 10 per cent, but 20 per cent. That’s what you need to save in order to have a comfortable retirement.�

You’ll think, I didn’t need to buy those six tomatoes, I only needed three, because I’ll probably end up throwing three away anyway.� Macnaught says managing money was easier in her younger years as there was no ‘buy now, pay later’ mentality. “In our day we couldn’t have it all at once, we had to save or you had lay-bys and had to pay them off before you got the goods. Today, young people get the goods and then have to pay off that horrible debt. Sometimes the goods are long gone by the time you pay off the debt; I think that’s sad. “Not all young people are like this – I’m generalising. But young people have been given more than we received
Macnaught is clearly passionate about the subject and aims to have people walking away from her talk feeling confident that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. “I would like them to think they could go away feeling a lot more confident about their future than when they arrived and hopefully they would go away with a few tips. To go away with some fire in their belly that they can do whatever they set out to do, provided they plan properly, have goals and get good advice along the way. “I have a wonderful analogy. If you go on a cruise ship – let’s say you’re going from Brisbane to Hawaii – the captain has the whole trip charted and he looks at that chart every hour maybe more. If he didn’t look at it for half a day he could find himself halfway to Japan and it’s going to take a long time to get back again. It’s the same with your financial planning.�

Sami Muirhead is planning to do her bit for the community by adopting a seeing eye puppy for a year – just don’t tell her husband.
Rebecca Grisman believes attending networking events is not a waste of time but a vital part of business success on the Sunshine Coast.

he older I get the more I feel that pull to give something back to society. I am mostly all talk and the whirlwind of life seems to just blow around me as I stumble about each day juggling the roles of wife, worker and mum. For the record, I am pretty much underachieving at all three roles most days. Admittedly I am time poor and have young children, so it does limit some options to giving back, but I just may have found a way to pour more love into our family and do something very worthwhile in the process: adopting a seeing eye puppy for 12 months. My husband does not know of my plan to apply to bring a bouncing puppy into our already hectic and crazy fold, but that is just a technicality. Seeing Eye Dogs Vision Australia has a wonderful local dog trainer, Brendan Ainsworth, who is searching to find a dozen Coasties to take on the task of sharing their homes with these lively bundles of fur for one year. “Labradors are the perfect dogs to train as seeing eye dogs as they are so smart and also they are accepted by the public, so you see a Labrador and everyone thinks how cute they are, and also most people are pretty aware Labradors are often working dogs,” Brendan says.
The trainer comes to your home once a week to check in and the dog’s food and vet bills are paid for by the organisation. It is a huge commitment as the pups need company most of the day and night to ensure they are socialised. Then of course you need to be able to emotionally let them go at the end of that year in order to fulfill their destiny. The dogs are then trained for a further six months before they are matched with their client. Pretty special dogs for some pretty special people and usually the bond between owner and canine is incredibly strong. Caloundra’s Peter Ryan is legally blind and has an 11-year-old Lab called Pebbles. “You have to experience it to believe it but I have been blessed, as Pebbles does exactly what I need her to do,” Peter says. “ I just have to say I am going to the IGA and she knows where to go.” “It is a permanent bonded friendship and she is with me all the time. She is well known by all the taxi drivers on the Coast and when we fly she even gets her own seat.” So if you think you can help please contact seda.visionaustralia.org. ’m often asked by other business owners, and people considering buying or starting a business on Sunshine Coast, about the value of local networking. I think it’s vital, whether you prefer small or large scale networking. There are many options and events for sharing business cards, contacts, leads, suppliers and feedback. The Sunshine Coast has a thriving group of chambers and associations across the region and their coordinators and members personally understand localised markets, impacts, viewpoints and issues. The small cost of membership is worth the investment to meet like minds. Chamber gatherings provide chances to share and compare experiences with customers, competitors and other stakeholders. There are a range of other options too as increasingly businesses, clubs, media and many venues host breakfasts, lunches, seminars, expos and more intensive opportunities to meet new faces, hear from expert speakers, discuss and debate topics, or simply socialise. You can find a range of event listings via Sunshine Coast Council’s website or by contacting chambers, dedicated business and tourism groups, or connecting with community, sporting, cultural, health and fitness, and music and arts groups that match your own interest. A simple Google search of my priorities turns up pages of opportunities to get out
and get involved from Gympie to Brisbane. It certainly requires taking time from your business to go along and join in events but the return on your investment can be manifold; one insight or lead can sometimes be groundbreaking. It can be reaffirming to just feel understood and inspiring to engage with other innovators and entrepreneurs. Other less obvious networking opportunities for business are regularly held by our region’s many schools and charities. They too host events and networking opportunities, not just for parents or clients but also their wider community of supporters. Some of the greatest concerts, dinners, fundraisers and workshops I’ve known were hosted at the university, school halls, local parks and community clubs. Our educational institutions are often seeking creative, innovative ways to build links with business for mutual benefits and can offer training, facilities and resources that few businesses can develop for themselves. Likewise, many regional charities host spectacular events and activities that bring all kinds of business leaders together for a common purpose; the in-built networking opportunities are a bonus. One of the greatest attributes we have is the many ways you and your business can genuinely be involved in our region’s economic, social and cultural growth. An old African proverb sums it up well: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.”

HOW TO FEEL GOOD WHEN YOU EAT OUT Jodi Chapman says eating out can be fraught with danger for those sensitive to additives.
E
ating out is part of daily life, and is a great way to socialise, though for some it can be a minefield, where picking carefully from the menu can become annoying but necessary to avoid feeling unwell later. Often it’s not the actual food, rather it’s the additives, preservatives, and flavour enhancers that leave the effect of being hungover, either immediately following the meal, or the next day. Some people experience bloating followed by headaches, migraines, low moods from irritability to severe depression and sadness, which can last up to 24 hours or longer. Others can feel well following the meal, so cannot make the connection, though suffer symptoms of chronic illness such as fatigue, flat mood, weight gain, fluid retention leading to heart conditions or low thyroid function. The reaction to these chemicals are
often the same as if we had consumed alcohol daily, and can be quite destructive not only to our mental health, but to our cardiovascular system, capillaries, arteries, and joints, leading to pain or arthritic conditions. Ask to hold the salad dressing or the sauce – if they come from a bottle most are preserved, such as balsamic glaze or vinegar. Beware of altered ingredients such as candied nuts, instead of raw or roasted, seasoning and bases such as soy or fish sauces. Instead choose olive oil and fresh lemon over your salad, fresh vegetables, meats and rice or pasta with salt, pepper, and pure herbs in an oil base instead of a pre-made seasoning. Keep it simple to look and feel your best, and get the best of both worlds.

When Currimundi beauty therapist Janine Hill answered an online ad for free beauty products last year, she had no idea it was a Hollywood gifting service looking for products to give the top 40 Oscar nominees. In January 1870, Matthew Carroll took up the first selection near today’s Nambour Showground and that, writes Dot Whittington, was the beginning of what was to be the region’s major commercial centre for more than a century.

atthew Carroll first used his 40 hectare selection for timber but he later turned to farming and in 1884, opened the settlement’s first business, a hotel, on showground hill. Meanwhile, William Samwell had made his selection, a free choice of crown land to assist with settlement, two months after Carroll, in March 1870. He called it Naamba, an aboriginal word meaning red flowering tea-tree, or its bark. In 1872, Samwell referred to Nambour, an Anglicised version of Naamba, in a letter to the Lands Department. The first building for white settlers went up in 1870 when Samwell provided accommodation for workers he had contracted to fell scrub. It was near their work site, that the Nambour Railway Station now stands. The remainder of the Petrie Creek valley was selected during 1878-80, but it was the railway line that really sowed the seeds for a new town. When it opened in 1891, Petrie’s Creek
was officially re-named Nambour. Until then, despite its position at the centre of the most fertile part of the region, it had been competing with the Cobb and Co depots of Woombye and Yandina. Carroll built a new hotel where the Commercial Hotel now stands, and the town started to take shape. The Currie family, who in 1896 gave their name to the main street, were commission agents and owned the first general store, a butchery and later the pub. Its name was changed from Carroll’s Petrie Creek Hotel to Currie’s Nambour Hotel. John Currie, a member of the committee chosen to name the Nambour streets, called it after his father, Daniel, a native of Illinois in the US who had moved from Victoria when his luck ran out on the goldfields. The first post mistress was Ann Jones, whose husband George became the first clerk of the forerunner to the Maroochy Shire Council, the Maroochy Divisional Board, which was formed in July 1890. The sugar mill played a big part in Nambour’s development from the day the

company was formed in December 1894. The first cane crush followed three years later. In addition to its large staff, which greatly expanded the town, it formed the basis of a town-dwelling population. In 1895, Nambour had a population of 150, but this had doubled by 1899 and at the turn of the century, there were 350 people. This meant the introduction of services such as a doctor, pharmacy and a solicitor but more importantly, people came to Nambour to do business. The population reached 1000 in 1910, but slowed during World War I, then grew to 2800 by 1927. From then, about 1000 people a year moved to the thriving commercial centre, where people from Noosa and Kenilworth, to Palmwoods and Eudlo and the coastal centres, came to shop and bank. Once roads began to improve in the 1930s, the first chain stores and specialty shops also came to Nambour and with the hospital, shire chambers and major school, it was the commercial heart of the Sunshine Coast until the turn of the millennium.
The plan for Palmwoods township adjacent to Palmtree Siding was presented to the Surveyor General by government surveyor A.H.Burbank, on February 3, 1891. Blocks of land were auctioned in Brisbane, on September 15, 1891. The first white settlers had arrived a decade earlier and named the settlement Merrimans Flat. By 1894, Palmwoods had made its first appearance in the country section of the Queensland postal directory.

He was often called on to conduct surf rescues. In all, he rescued 43 people from the surf before there was a lifesaving club. • The population of the three Sunshine Coast local government authority areas reached 100,000 in 1981. MAKE YOUR OWN NIGIRI With the unrelenting heat making for some balmy nights, Michael Thomas from Point Cartwright Seafoods shares his recipe for Nigiri Rolls that he and his family have been enjoying. Nigiri Rolls SERVE WITH Serves 4 soy sauce, wasabi Ingredients: and Japanese • 3 cups of sushi rice mayonnaise • 3.5 cups of water • ½ cup of rice vinegar • 2 tablespoons white sugar • 2 teaspoon fine salt 1. Wash the rice (one cup = three rolls) with running water for one to two minutes until there is no more starch coming out of it. 2. After you are done washing, take the rice and place it gently in a pot, or rice cooker. Add water using a ratio of about 1.2 to one in favour of the water. 3. First cook rice on high heat, stir every minute or two, until the water boils. Then, reduce the heat to simmer and cover the pot for 8 to 10 minutes. 4. Once cooked, place the rice into a bowl and leave uncovered.
ITALIAN ARTHOUSE FILM TO SHOW AT FESTIVAL SEQUEL The overwhelming support for the inaugural movie to launch Caloundra Film Festival’s monthly arthouse initiative means another is already on its way. Festival director Murray Power says he has secured the Italian smash hit Perfect Strangers to follow up the success of French movie Rosalie Blum. Perfect Strangers swept the Italian Oscars and has won numerous awards throughout the festival world, including Tribeca. 5. In a separate pot, combine the rice vinegar, salt and sugar on a low heat until the salt and sugar has dissolved. If you like sweeter vinegar, add more sugar. 6. While the seasoning is still hot, pour evenly over the rice and gently stir with a wooden spoon so as not to damage the rice. Once seasoned, let the rice cool down naturally to room temperature with a damp cloth over it. 7. Using damp hands, arrange the rice into finger shapes. 8. Now the exciting part – dressing the rice with seafood. There is an endless possibility to what seafood you can use, though make sure you purchase from a reputable seafood outlet that processes on site and find fish that is cut specifically for sashimi. Once the seafood is selected, using a clean dry knife, slice the fish into thin bite-size pieces and place on top of your rice mould.

THE BLUES BROTHERS ARE BACK It seems like yesterday that brothers, Jake and Elwood Blues, played by John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, invited the world to join them on a ‘mission from God’. The hit movie, The Blues Brothers, was a loveable tale of redemption about the pair of paroled convicts, who set out to save the Catholic orphanage in which they grew up, from the taxation department. As the story goes, they re-formed their rhythm and blues band, The Blues Brothers, and organised a concert to raise $5000 to pay off the debt and save the day. Now, 30 years on, the Blues Brothers live on in the Official Blues Brothers Revue, and Sunshine Coast fans are set to get a nostalgic musical fix when the show comes to our region in March. Starring Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood, the Blues Brothers Revue is the only Blues Brothers show to be officially sanctioned by Ackroyd and Judith, the wife of the late Belushi. After auditioning over 200 Blues Brothers teams for the world premiere of their musical, Catania and Lafferty were immediately cast in the lead roles. The show combines comedy, music and mayhem, as well as songs from the five albums put out by Belushi and Aykroyd. The Blues Brothers will be at The Events Centre, Caloundra on March 9 at 7.30pm. etirement has given Dave Henry the gift of a passion and talent he never knew he had. All it took was making time to stop and smell the roses or, in his case, the timber. For this former workaholic, it is reason to celebrate this exciting new phase of his life. Working in managerial roles within the mining industry, Henry was so busy he didn’t have time for anything else. Henry says it took him about six months of retirement to fully realise there was more to life than working. “I had to get away from that attitude of
waking up and thinking ‘What do I need to do today?’ and always being busy,” he says. “I found myself sitting around with nothing to do. That’s when I picked up a piece of timber.” Without any drawings or plans, Henry has found himself able to build some impressive pieces out of wood from old pallets. He started with birdhouses and quickly moved on to creating coffee tables, dining tables and plant stands. With a new project always on the go, and two sons and three grandchildren close by, Henry says he is celebrating the freedom of the lifestyle he has created for himself.
“It’s a very relaxed atmosphere here,” says the Buderim Gardens resident. He often finds himself wandering down to the waterfront for a coffee, or spending an afternoon working on his garden. “I always wanted to be here on the Sunshine Coast and I’m so happy – I should have done the move years ago.”

tay in your lane. It’s probably the most fundamental principle of driving a motor car. But it’s also a very good rule to follow when you’re building cars, as well.

evolve, along the way becoming one of the world’s most awarded cars. No radical redesigns or switches of direction. Just a bit better with every successive model. VW seems to be following precisely the same approach with its compact SUV – the Tiguan – effectively a Golf in disguise. Now into its second generation, the Tiguan has adopted the Golf philosophy – as well as much of its running gear and interior features – and has taken an impressive evolutionary step in the process. Just a few months after being launched in Australia, the Tiguan has already swept many of the nation’s top motoring awards. And it’s not only the motoring writers who are impressed. In its first full month on sale, the Tiguan attracted almost 1200 Aussie buyers during November – more than any sales month in the model’s history. And VW claims buyers continue to line up – with record waiting lists for laterelease, upscale versions of the Tiguan. It’s not hard to see why, on either account. Just like the Golf, it’s a brilliantly targeted, brilliantly executed piece of automotive engineering. Not particularly outstanding in any single way – but terrific by the sum of its parts. MOTORING that much – yet everything about it is new and better. It’s still instantly recognisable as the progeny of the original, first-generation Tiguan it replaces, yet it’s bigger, bolder and more athletic than ever before. It’s got more equipment, more power, more refinement and more space. Yet despite all the improvements, the entry-level Tiguan costs $2000 less than the equivalent model of the original car when it was launched more than eight years ago. It will be offered in three trim levels with the choice of five engines – two of them turbo-diesel, three turbocharged petrol – all with four cylinders – and a choice of six-speed or seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions – plus a six-speed manual. Phew. Enough choice? Prices will start from $31,990 for the entry-level, six-speed manual Trendline with a 110kW turbo petrol engine. An auto transmission will add $3000 to that package – while for $2000 more you could step up to the mid-range Comfortline with a swag of extra kit. The flagship Highline trim ups the ante to a hefty $48,490 with petrol power or $1500 more with a diesel engine. The sporty R-Line package, a $4000 option, will top the range in the 162TSI Highline – a Tiguan that, for the first time, offers the same mechanical package as the
legendary Golf GTI. We tested the mid-range Comfortline model with the second-most powerful 132kW TSI petrol engine with seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It impressed as a beautifully balanced, smartly-performed and amply specified little machine. It’s not massively big, even for its class, although it will swallow up five adults and a decent chunk of luggage if it needs to. Reclining and sliding rear seats will make sure everybody can get comfy. It’s not particularly quick – although once again, even with a decent load on board – it was never found wanting for power. And it won’t turn heads like some of its Korean or Japanese rivals will do. The Germans are far too sensible for that.
navigation, chrome trim and folding tables for rear-seat passengers. Additional Highline gadgets include leather trim, LED headlights, gearshift paddles, auto-folding mirrors and electric sports seats. Even in its most basic form, though, the Tiguan simply does everything well – ride, handling, performance and fuel.
But in its ultimate trim, with 20-inch wheels and the R-Line styling package, it’s a gorgeous thing to look at. That model had a waiting list of more than 700 buyers at last count – although those orders are now starting to be filled. Inside, it’s typical VW efficiency – with many of the interior features quickly recognisable as having the same heritage as just about every other VW model. Again, no need to reinvent the wheel here. However, it does add some impressive kit including an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system across the range; plus a active information display (similar to corporate cousin Audi’s “Virtual Cockpit” in high-spec models). There’s also all-round Area View parking radar, three-zone climate control and electric tailgate. Even more impressive are the features you don’t see – like city emergency braking, lane departure assist, driver fatigue detection and adaptive cruise control – included on all models. THE PROS AND CONS OF GOING TO AUCTION
Queensland had almost four times the number of auctions as Victoria and New South Wales in January, with the Sunshine Coast a large contributor to the final figure. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
T
he stars have aligned for the Sunshine Coast property market and sellers are reaping the benefits of looking at auction to get the best possible price for their properties. Demand for Coast property is far outweighing market supply, creating a sense of urgency for buyers, and when you combine this with the forecast growth for the region and factors like fear of loss and social proof, which are unique to an auction sale, sellers are enjoying the perfect storm. Usually associated with the realm of big city property markets, the Coast heavily contributed to Queensland taking out the largest number of auctions for January. The high number of visitors to our region from the southern capitals and their willingness to buy property via the auction process was a contributing factor in Queensland, at times, attracting more than double the number of auctions of Victoria and New South Wales last month. In the last week of January, there were 433 auctions throughout the state, while Victoria held 147 and NSW 144. The Auction Group principal Gordon Macdonald says there is building curiosity around auctions at the moment. “Auctions are really the only public forum for real estate as private treaty deals are done without the local community knowing about it, until the information becomes available on data websites months down the track, and that’s why auctions have a pull – they are in real time,” Macdonald says. “Auctions have always been quite prominent on the Coast, but the higher clearance that we are getting at the moment is fuelled by the positivity in the market. Macdonald says if an auction marketing campaign is run efficiently, there can be a good field of bidding competition when auction day arrives. “Auctions require serious consideration at the moment as for a small investment, you can be satisfied that you have done all you can to invite the whole market in,” he says. “There is nothing like the bidding of two or more emotional purchasers to enable a premium price, especially now there is that sense of urgency to purchase with the supply and demand imbalance. “Fear of loss is a very powerful human emotion and people step up to the plate when it kicks in and it is accompanied by social proof. Unlike private treaty sales, auction sales are immediately unconditional, so any potential buyers need to have their finance pre-approved and have carried out any pest and building inspections beforehand.
“There is nothing like the bidding of two or more emotional purchasers to enable a premium price” A Real Estate Industry Queensland spokesperson says auction is an increasingly popular method of sale, which requires buyers to fully understand the process. “A very important part of the auction process is that the successful bidder on auction day will be required to sign the Contract of Sale and pay the required deposit on the spot and there is no cooling
off period when you buy a residential property at auction in Queensland,” the spokesperson says. “Open house days and inspections by appointment are the best time to make enquiries, get a copy of the Contract of Sale, take a good look around the property and clarify particulars. “It is also the time when building and pest inspections should be conducted. A reminder though – inspections can only be carried out with the permission of the owners and will be at the prospective buyer’s cost.” The REIQ spokesperson says it is important to arrive early on auction day to review the terms and conditions of auction and make sure there are no late changes to the Contract of Sale. “Legislation requires all people bidding at auction to provide their names, addresses and proof of identity prior to bidding,” the spokesperson says. “The bidder will be provided with a number, which must be displayed if you make a bid during the course of the auction. It is important to remember that you don’t have to bid just because you have registered, but you must be registered if you intend to bid. “It is also important to keep to your budget during the auction because if you are the successful bidder, you will be the new owner of the property.” There is an abundance of information about the auction process at reiq.com.au to help you dispel any misconceptions.
CONS • Often when a premium price is achieved that is subject to finance, the contract can fall over due to the valuation not coming in at a level the banks are satisfied with, despite the preparedness of the buyer to pay that amount.

Wow, we actually had some head-high to overhead waves across the Coast last week and into the weekend. How hot was Sunday? Just crazy. This week we’ve had plenty of southerlies so we should have some east, southeast swell. A bit similar to last weekend with light winds on Saturday early with a stronger onshore later, so get to the open beaches as early as you can for waves around two-foot plus at the south facing beaches. Sunday will see winds swing around from the north with potential for the swell to be a bit bigger than Saturday so if you scored a few last Sunday, you know where to go to avoid the wind.

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack about in numbers up in Coolum, Petrie and Eudlo Creeks with lures and live bait the go. Some honker whiting taking yabbies on the drift past Goat Island and down to Cotton Tree. Mud crabs working down from Bli Bli requiring some rain to flush them out of their holes. Flathead under the high rise apartments along Duporth Avenue. SURF: Low tide gutters producing tarwhine, sand whiting and flathead from Mudjimba to Pincushion using yabbies, pippies and worms. A few tailor around the Maroochy Bar just after dark. OFFSHORE: The close in reefs of Coolum, Gneerings and Currimundi working well for mixed reef fish with dawn and dusk the best. Pillies or squid returning the better quality. The Barwon Banks for pearlies, rosy job fish and squire. If you are anchoring berleying is a must. Mackeral are here one day, gone the next, with plenty of bait schools moving around. FRESHWATER: Water levels down at both Lake Baroon and Lake McDonald but these spots are popular for families having a BBQ and a quiet fish. These impoundments always return a bass or golden perch on medium diving lures with red and black preferred. Ewan Maddock Dam is also a lovely spot and is now part of the Qld Stocking Program.

A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN Richard O’Leary pits the tennis against the boxing and finds a surprising winner.
A
t face value the recent Federer-Nadal match up and the Mundine-Green fight share some similarities – age-old, and ageing foes battling it out one last time. But one of these events left me cold, while the other warmed my heart. By temperament, I should have been excited by the boxing, and bored by the tennis. I’ve always been fascinated with pugilism – this primitive sport (if you can even call it a sport) where two men are pitted against each other with nowhere to hide. I know it’s not politically correct, and I know eventually it will be waylaid like many of my other youthful passions, but it’s been there since I was a kid listening to the radio out the back of my house in a

rough and tumble Aussie country town, as Jeff Fenech punched his way to glory with broken hands. I would later watch Kostya Tszyu fight in Newcastle, where I worked as a television reporter. I remember three things about that week: the boxer’s shyness, my belief Tszyu would go on to become a world beater, and every reporter trying not to stare at his beautiful wife Natasha during the media conference. Both Fenech and Tszyu were at different times in their careers considered the best pound for pound boxers in the world. I admired their skill, tenacity and toughness. And tennis, well I’ve always been able to take it or leave it. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what they do, it just doesn’t move me. The consequences of losing a tennis match are
benign, while a similar result in boxing can be brutal. So theoretically the Mundine-Green fight should have been my thing, but, that’s not how it turned out. While the tennis provided the clash of two champs who had fought back after recently being cruelled by injury, the boxing was just two has-beens lining up for one last pay day. While Federer and Nadal fans could appreciate and acknowledge the wonderful abilities of the other player – many Mundine and Green fans were split down racial lines. While the class of the Swiss ace and the Spanish gladiator delivered a match full of twists and turns, Mundine and Green could only counterpunch with cheap shots and a controversial decision. While one contest will never be forgotten, the other we already wish we could forget. Unfortunately we may never see Federer and Nadal in another major final – tragically, we probably will see another farce by Mundine and Green. olearylastword@gmail.com
