aving spent 14 years in the media industry, I have a respect for the delivery of news. I’m curious by nature. I love to be informed – my desk is piled high with magazines and reports. My social media accounts are filled with news feeds. This is why I was surprised to find myself switching off the morning news bulletin. It is a journalist’s job to deliver the good and the bad; to keep the public informed. On that particular day, there was too little good happening in the world. Sometimes we need to take the negative – the sad, the shocking – and turn it around into a positive. This is what the My Weekly Preview team aims to do. We work hard to relate to the community and share a balance of interesting, intelligent news features, community profiles and lifestyle news. We want to tell the stories of inspiring people. CRUNCH TIME Katie Barrett of Moffat Beach is a muesli entrepreneur who helps Sunshine Coast locals start their day on a healthy note. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
FIRST JOB? Nearly every school holidays I would help my Nan and Pa at their health food store in East St Kilda, Melbourne. I helped pack nuts, seeds and dried fruits in the early years – I loved it. My first real job was a checkout chick at my local supermarket.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Growing my little business, BRKFST. I make and distribute ready-to-eat bircher muesli bowls to espresso bars, cafes, gyms and food trucks up and down the Sunshine Coast. I make them to order on a Sunday and Thursday and then deliver them every Monday and Friday.
I came to the Sunshine Coast to relax for a little while, visit my dad. I loved it that much I ended up living here. I think making the decision to move here was a big turning point.

My dad lives here on the Coast, the rest of my family live in Melbourne. I have two brothers; one older, one younger – both found wonderful wives and both have a beautiful little girl each, Mia and Eve.
FIRST CAR? I saved up and bought myself a little red Mitsubishi Mirage. I loved it.
FAVOURITE BOOK? The Zahir by Paulo Coelho. I read this book when I was living in Japan around 10 years ago. I loved it then and I love it now. And I just love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich for a fun easy read.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? The Bees by Laline Paull. I just love this book. It’s so creative and so informative. I’ve learnt so much about bees but the clever way this story is written makes it so exciting.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Small minds and big mouths.

Cooking, wine, friends, music, sleep, gin.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
Sunrise walks along Moffat Beach, coffee at the Pocket, breakfast goodness from Beau’s at Kings Beach, more coffee at The Urban while we’re in Caloundra, brunch at Gainsbourg on the Mooloolaba Esplanade, a walk along Alex Headland, a cake or two at Tome on Ocean Street, a look around the Eumundi markets, lunch by the beach in Noosa, dinner at The Spirit House in Yandina.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
Making it to 30. (I joke). I think starting BRKFST – creating a business from the ground up has been pretty great. I’m pretty proud of my efforts so far.
It’s just beautiful. I miss the hustle and bustle of the city sometimes but there is just something about the Coast; it’s captured my heart.
Sweet Thing by Van Morrison. What’s the worst that can happen? I love reminding myself of this little gem. It’s never too late to start again.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Save more, worry less. I remember an old friend of mine telling me how time flies. I didn’t believe them. I couldn’t get out of high school fast enough. Now I hear myself saying it and realise how true it really is.

NRL OR AFL? AFL – Hawthorn. I haven’t quite figured out NRL yet.

CHEF ON A QUEST Sunshine Coast celebrity chef Matt Golinski is full of life and driven by his passion for good eating. He talks to My Weekly Preview about the childhood experiences that formed the man he is today and his insatiable desire to learn more about cooking. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
G
rowing up on a tropical fruit farm on the Sunshine Coast, Matt Golinski was surrounded by good produce from an early age and the seeds for what would become a successful career were sown in those fields. Golinski says the history behind every ingredient he works with is probably more important than what he can transform it into, so it is only fitting that we revisit the years when he discovered the world of cooking. “I don’t know whether being on the farm influenced me, but I found out that I could use ingredients to bake cakes and make lollies from a young age and I always enjoyed seeing the end product and eating it as well,” he says. “I guess my love of food has always been there and that love grew when I started cooking stuff for my friends and family and there was also the praise that you got heaped on you for creating something so delicious. I liked making people happy and I liked being told I’m clever.” Down-to-earth and quick-witted, Golinski has a real charisma that shines through and creates an instant rapport, so it is little wonder the renowned chef reached celebrity status after working in prestigious commercial kitchens and being scooped up by television executives to feature as a team leader on Channel 10 show Ready Steady Cook. Golinski went on to run a successful catering company in Noosa for six years before tragedy struck on Boxing Day, 2011. It is a day that is etched into the minds of Sunshine Coast residents as Golinski’s wife Rachel and daughters Willow, Sage and Starlia lost their lives when their Tewantin home caught fire early in the morning. Five years on, Golinski prefers not to speak about that life-changing moment and the harrowing physical and emotional recovery that followed, but instead focuses on what has become a busy life, with requests for his talents and expertise being sent in from all over the country. “My life is really just this succession of various dinners and events,” he says. “It’s a great life and I’m really enjoying being able to do a little bit of everything.” On the day of our interview, Golinski was headed to long-time friend and fellow chef Glen Barratt’s home to raid his vegie garden for warrigal greens to use in a dinner
he was cooking for Royal Australian Air Force officers. The themed dinner also featured lilly pilly, finger limes and bunya nuts and was presented after he spent time with the RAAF chefs, teaching them the tricks of the trade. It is just one of the events that fills Golinski’s calendar with a range of interesting cooking, presenting and teaching opportunities. Golinski continues to make his mark on the Coast as the chef behind the menu at Altitude on Montville and is a spokesperson and supporter of Noosa pizza shop called WtF? (Who’s the Farmer?). Both venues rely heavily on fresh, local produce, a concept that Golinski lives and breathes. Golinski says he is the most relaxed when speaking with farmers or foraging for wild produce to add that extra something to his dishes and relishes any opportunity to learn more about the origins of the ingredients he works with. The chef credits his role as Gympie Regions Food and Culinary Tourism ambassador, a position he has held for three years, for strengthening his understanding of food. “The more you understand how something is grown, the better equipped you are to actually cook it,” he says. “The role means I am going and seeing the produce and meeting people g the p p who grow it, which is really an

COVER STORY extension of what we do and is an important part of understanding what we do as well. “When I began actually farming and growing things, the better I became as a cook. It’s quite amazing that when you think you’ve got cooking nailed, you realise there are a lot of things to left to discover, so every day is a learning experience in a kitchen.” While working in a kitchen has always been second nature to Golinski, he says he gets a real kick out of getting back to nature and sourcing bush tucker for meals. “One of the things that’s really fun and rewarding is finding things that are out in the wild that you can just go and pick yourself,” he says. “It’s a trendy thing that cool chefs go and do, but I’ve always done it and I like knowing where there’s a lemon myrtle tree and where I can go to pick warrigal greens beside the beach, those sorts of things are kind of exciting… but I’ve never taken magic mushrooms or anything like that.” Golinski has fond memories of experimenting with Barratt by raiding a lilly pilly tree near a squash court in Kelvin Grove and going home to turn it into a sauce. “You learn as you go along what you can and can’t eat and then you build on that repertoire. Luckily, I haven’t had a nasty experience with trying the wrong thing yet,” he says. “It is also pretty economical to pick and eat your food for free.” Bush tucker and its links with Aboriginal culture is something Golinski says has always heavily influenced his cooking style. “It is very much about paying respects to the traditions and the history of food and largely, my style of cooking is very much produce-driven and is not about being flashy, but having respect for those ingredients, which are world-class in our region,” he says. “When I was in a Redcliffe botanic gardens, I was using alipinia ginger from their garden to cook with and one of their botanists told me they can actually follow the path the Aborigines used to walk from Redcliffe to the Bunya Mountains by where
Hello possums – see ‘Dame Edna’ at the festival the alpinia ginger grows, because the kids chewed on it as lollies on the way as they were walking to harvest the bunya nuts, which were in abundance every four years, and they’d discard the bits of ginger that they didn’t eat as they went. “It’s a lovely anecdote about the history of food and the pathways of food, that’s what interests me.” Golinski says he is pleased to see a return to natural and healthy eating habits and took particular pleasure in seeing kids get their hands dirty in vegie gardens at home and at school, but he admits could never go vegetarian or vegan. “I understand people who are healthconscious or morally and ethically looking at veganism, so I totally respect that, but I haven’t found a food in my life that I don’t love, all foods are amazing and I’d hate to deny myself any of it,” he says. That’s not to say Golinski doesn’t eat healthy. It’s almost a prerequisite to provide the necessary fuel for his passion for long distance running.
When he is not travelling the country presenting at festivals or being a guest chef, Golinski writes recipes and food columns for various publications and is engaged as a recipe developer by food producers around Australia to create original recipes to help promote their products. In the rare moments when food is not on his mind, Golinski likes to play music with his mates and is also a “mad keen” motorcyclist, enjoying rides along the winding hinterland roads. Golinski’s next local appearance will be at the Ginger Flower and Food Festival, an event he has presented at for the past three years. “I use a lot of ginger in my cooking, so it’s great to show people how versatile it is and how good it is for you, but the thing I love the most about the Ginger Festival is that the gingers are in flower at the time and from my gardener’s point of view, it just gets me into a frenzy and when I leave there, I have an entire boot full of ginger plants to bring home,” he says. More than 10,000 people are expected to flock to the Ginger Factory over three days from today, January 20, to see Golinski and Hungry Feel Eating House’s Chris White, Peter Wolfe from Cedar Creek Farm and The Spirit House’s Kelly Lord. Experienced horticulturist and popular keynote speaker Kim Taylor will also share her knowledge on creating colourful ginger gardens that are easy and fun and there will be plenty of entertainment and fun activities for the little ones. The Ginger Festival has had more than 130,000 visitors since 2002 and this year, guests can enjoy the most exquisite display of more than 3500 ornamental gingers and heliconias, which will also be available for purchase.

MORE FUN TO COME The first major festival of the 2017 summer festival season is the Ginger Flower and Food Festival, which celebrates our rich agricultural profile and the international renown of Sunshine Coast ginger. RICHMOND TIGERS ARRIVE FOR TRAINING CAMP Richmond AFL team will be hoping the Sunshine Coast can be the lucky charm to break its 36-year premiership drought. The Tigers are set for their first trek to our region for a seven-day training camp from January 22, including a community session at the Maroochydore Multi-Sport Complex on Australia Day. RAIL DUPLICATION TOPS LIST OF REQUIRED PROJECTS Duplication of the North Coast rail line between Beerburrum and Nambour heads a list of big ticket projects for the Sunshine Coast, announced with the release of the second Building Queensland Infrastructure Pipeline report on Monday. The $780 million rail duplication now only awaits funding in the mid-year State Budget for work to start. Also in the pipeline, but requiring further study, is a major upgrade of 60 kilometres of the Bruce Highway between Pine Rivers and Caloundra.
COMPASS INSTITUTE TO RUN BOTANIC GARDENS CAFE The award-winning local charity The Compass Institute has secured the licence for the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden’s new cafe through the Sunshine Coast Council’s competitive tender process. The organisation, which provides support and on-the-job training for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, has employed budding baristas and is already serving up coffee and other treats at the gardens.

Unitywater has announced an upgrade of Kawana Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)worth $73.9 million. The upgrade is a significant step to address future population growth in the area, taking the current treatment capacity of the plant from about 90,000 people to 200,000 people. The plant services communities from the southern end of its catchment at Pelican Waters through to Buddina and the upgrade will mean sewage from South Buderim, Chancellor Park and Sippy Downs, which is currently treated at Maroochydore STP, will be sent to Kawana STP.

Their successful return to the wild also marked the launch of SEA LIFE Trust’s Ocean Youth Program for 2017, an initiative seeking to empower passionate youngsters to become marine advocates by defending and protecting the ocean for future generations. SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is looking for 20 young Queenslanders aged between 12 and 15 to join a 12-month program, which kicks off in early February.

eing alone, or feeling lonely affects most people at some time in their lives. Changes sometimes occur that bring sadness or anxiety, so slowly without your awareness, especially if voids are left where loved ones once were, leaving you feeling unhappy and lost. Social isolation is a common cause of depression or anxiety, and is incredibly important to be aware of not only for yourself but for those around you. Most commonly affecting the elderly, divorced couples, the children of divorce – as their lives change so suddenly often without warning – or simply moving away from family or friends, until a new social network is established. The biochemical response the body has in loneliness is firstly a feeling of anxiety, which raises your hormone cortisol, often keeping you awake at night, leading to tiredness by day, often shutting down your digestion, causing a loss of
appetite. If this sequence goes on long enough, another very important hormone, DHEA which is required for happiness and energy then begins to decline through lack of proper rest, too much stress, and poor nutrient absorption. The symptoms of anxiety, depression, sadness and fatigue can then continue, and can be very difficult to rebalance without some kind of intervention. Taking steps to integrate into social networks can change your life dramatically, and just as important is seeking help to rebalance hormones, counselling, being nutritionally sound through diet, exercise, downtime doing things you love, and a good work/life balance. Don’t wait to begin a healing process, make the changes and allow life to begin again.

MED SCHOOL AN URGENT MATTER
Sami Muirhead gives her take on the outrageous way women in TV are treated – not just by management, but by each other.

I
have watched and read in disgust the headlines about female presenters in TV news. First there was white blazer-gate, where Amber Sherlock made a bit of a goose of herself in that titillating leaked footage showing her talking to an experienced colleague the way I talk to my two-year-old toddler if I am trying to coax him to eat his dinner. I do not like judging other females, but come on. Really? There is a way to talk to your co-workers and being passive aggressive and condescending is not acceptable. I worked in TV news for 12 years as a journalist before I switched to radio and made a decision to focus on positive stories. However before my ‘ah-ha’ moment, I loved my job. I wanted to report the news, not read the news. Presenters are born presenters. They are all stunning and they are all skinny. I know at least six readers who have been on a diet for 20 years. This industry places unreal expectations on women to never age and to remain skeletal thin. There are a hundred young women lined up at the door ready to pounce on the next job, even it the pay is peanuts. I have worked with many high profile presenters, including Yvonne Sampson who has just switched networks. The former
Palmwoods girl is just about the nicest person you could ever meet. That beautiful young woman would share her jackets with all of us reporters with such generosity. Yvonne would insist we all had a turn at wearing her designer threads because most of us were wearing Big W or Sportsgirl clothing. Other presenters I worked with would shut their lockers with actual padlocks to ensure their jackets were off limits to mere journalists. Word on the street is the bosses at a television network treated one of their most underrated stars, Yvonne, pretty badly. Go figure. I also worked with Talitha Cummins. The mum of one is also another woman who is stunning to look at, but her other talents are clearly abundant. Talitha is just a good egg. The last one to go home. The first one to shout you a coffee. Talitha has just launched an unfair dismissal case against the Seven Network claiming she was sacked from her role while on maternity leave. How outrageous. I wish the country was as fixated with this alleged decision as we are with white blazer-gate. Amber, all I can say is next time, ring Yvonne because she would have whipped out one of her own jackets faster than you can roll your eyes and flick your hair, all while texting the wardrobe department.

ver the past four years we have watched with pride as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital has emerged from its Birtinya birthplace. After years of planning and design and with construction completed, we can now fully appreciate the enormity of this $1.87 billion project. Yet at the eleventh hour, all is not as it should be. The hospital will open in April without the promised medical school – and unless the Federal Government allocates the 15 required medical student places by mid-February, the medical school is unlikely to be operational by 2019. What is worse is that this has been an issue for at least three years, and it is still not resolved. This is unacceptable. I have been raising this for over two years with current and previous federal and state health ministers and did so again with the Prime Minister and candidates at the start of the federal election campaign last May. Our council and our community only want what we were promised. We have been told there is a review underway of all medical student places across Australia – but the outcome won’t be known until April. We don’t have the luxury to wait that long. Nor should we have to, when this should have been resolved long before now.
This is not about creating new places or generating an oversupply of doctors. It is about reallocating student places from those areas where there is a known oversupply – Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania – to areas where there is an undersupply, such as the Sunshine Coast. Our council is standing with our residents to ensure our university hospital has a medical school. As a community, we have every right to question why the medical school places haven’t been allocated before now. For too long, the Sunshine Coast has gone without.
“Our council and our community only want what we were promised” It is time to send the Federal Government a message that we want the additional 15 medical school places allocated to the Sunshine Coast as a matter of urgency. NOKIA NOSTALGIA: ICONIC PHONE RETURNS The Nokia mobile phone is coming back. Finland-based HMD Global says it’s launching its first smartphone – the Nokia 6 – in China, under licence from the network provider, once the world’s top mobile phone maker. The aluminium handset, with a 5.5-inch screen, will be the first Nokia to run the Android operating system. HMD Global, the licensee of the Nokia brand for mobile phones and tablets, announced it chose to launch in China, with more than 550 million smartphone users, because of a “desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world.” The Nokia 6 will be available in early 2017 and cost around $335. An Australian release date is not yet confirmed. – AAP

We’re now less than a month away from one of our major highlights of 2017 – the arrival of the Sunshine Coast Lightning on the national sporting scene. And you can already see that our new netball team – our region’s first elite national sporting club – is being warmly embraced by our Sunshine Coast community. On February 18, our team will hit the court officially for the first time against the Queensland Firebirds at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and I encourage all Lightning fans to get their tickets to ensure we have a real presence for the Sunshine Coast’s debut match. Wouldn’t it be a great start if we can beat the reigning champions? Eight days later comes one of the biggest events ever in Coast sport history when the Lightning hosts the Melbourne Vixens at the upgraded USC Sports Stadium. If the trial games are any indication, we’re heading for a sellout and an enormous atmosphere in front of the Channel Nine cameras at what should be an intimidating venue for away teams. A SPECIAL DAY TO HELP OUR WILDLIFE As the first turtle hatchlings of the season begin to make their way from their nests to the ocean, TurtleCare groups and wildlife experts are calling on the Sunshine Coast community to join the effort to clear local beaches of rubbish and debris. You can join TurtleCare Sunshine Coast, ReefCheck Australia and SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast for an enormous land to sea clean-up event from Shelly Beach to Marcoola on Saturday, February 11. Last year’s event saw more than 500kg of debris removed from beaches and waterways and we’d like our Coast residents and visitors to roll up their sleeves again for 2017. DEDICATION SEES LOCAL TEEN RIDING A WAVE OF SUCCESS Coolum teenager Isabella Nichols is making waves on the international junior surfing circuit and is setting her sights on the open women’s category in 2017. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

sabella Nichols was eight years old when she was pushed onto her first wave by her father, Ross. But the 2016 Ericeira Women’s World Junior Champion is the first to admit she was not instantly hooked on the sport. In fact, it wasn’t until she was 11 that she thought she could make a good go of competitive surfing. “I think it was the whole social scene that got me. All of my friends were doing it and in primary school we went to little comps from grade five to seven and we would all meet up at the beach and have a day off school and hang out. These are some of my best memories,” she says. The bright and bubbly Coolum 19-year-old says she entered her first competition when she was 12 years old without fully understanding the rules. “I didn’t do too well in my first couple of events because I had no idea how to surf a comp at all, I was getting pulled up for interferences on everybody, although I was the one who was having the most fun out on the water,” she quips. “I remember coming in and people asking me what I was doing. After that I learnt pretty quickly, but I didn’t take it seriously until I was 15.” Nichols took her first podium at a Coolum grom competition at the age of 14 and made the under 16s Australian team a year later, steadily rising through the ranks to junior champion and number 11 on the Women’s Qualifying Series last year. Not too bad for a young woman who just four years ago, had no idea how she would make her dream of becoming a professional surfer a reality. Nichols’ passport pages look pretty impressive, with visits to El Salvador, Mexico, LA, Spain, France, Portugal, Nicaragua, Ecuador, New Zealand, Japan, China and Indonesia in just one year of competition. Not bad for a young woman who has developed a fear of flying after a terrifying experience when flying home from Indonesia two years ago. Nichols says her plane “flipped sideways” just 200 metres off the ground when coming in to land in Sydney and she has been an uneasy flier ever since. Even though the thrill of exploring new countries and the adrenaline of competition is addictive, Nichols says finishing school was always a priority for her and Coolum High School devised a specialised program so she could complete Year 11 and 12 over three years. “It was difficult when I had to go overseas and didn’t do
anything when I was gone, so when I got back, I knuckled down because I always wanted to do well at school,” she says. “There is always life after surfing and you can only do it for so long, so I wanted to set myself up with a backup plan, otherwise you are not backing yourself fully.” While still completing Year 12, Nichols won the Women’s World Junior Champion and just missed out on a place on the world circuit by two rankings, something she hopes to begin to rectify as the open women’s qualifying series kicks off in Burleigh Heads later this month. It was also the time when Nichols also got a taste of the life of a Hollywood star after she won the role of stunt double for Blake Lively in The Shallows, which was released in Australia late last year. Nichols spent three weeks working closely with the Gossip Girl star, teaching her how to look authentic waxing a surfboard and paddling in the ocean on location at Lord Howe Island.
Action scenes and body movements that Nichols shot were mixed with Lively’s scenes to create a seamless transition between the pair in the $31 million production. “Before this movie, she was my favourite actress, so I was fangirling hard,” Nichols says. “By the end of it, she was pretty legit on a board. “It was pretty crazy getting thrown into the whole movie industry, it was so full on and hectic and I would bring my laptop with me and do school work while I was waiting for my shots to come up.” When she wasn’t required on set, Nichols says she revelled in having the surf at Lord Howe practically to herself. “It was one of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life,” she says. Nichols says she still has moments where she has to pinch herself and thanks her lucky stars for where she is today – she is a brand ambassador for Ken Mills Toyota and Sun Bum Sunscreen as well as being sponsored by Billabong, DHD Surfboards, Oakley, FCS, Brazen and Surf Dive ‘n’ Ski, just to name a few. “In the last two to three years, all of the girls I’ve looked up to I’m now surfing and travelling with, which is sick and it’s been a crazy experience,” she says. With the unwavering support of her parents, Ross and Lisbeth, Nichols will be one to watch this year on the surfing circuit.

PARADISE ISLAND Orpheus Island Resort on the Great Barrier Reef is the epitome of exclusivity and luxury – prepare to be indulged.
I
t’s become a cliche that exclusive tropical resorts have the power to magically dismiss the stressful detritus that builds up on our souls throughout life. The Orpheus Island Resort, off the coast of north Queensland, is the reason why. As my helicopter soars over the Great Barrier Reef on our way to the resort, it occurs to me that I’m not escaping the proverbial grind of reality. I’m just trading one reality for another. And with views like these, I don’t want to trade back. If anything, Orpheus presents a heightened reality: drinks constantly on hand, decadent food, deep blue water and unspoiled beaches. Without overbearing waiters hovering around you all the time, this could easily be mistaken for a dream. Only 28 dreamers are allowed on Orpheus at a time. The resort’s 14 rooms accentuate the secluded atmosphere, while
the dining options, like the roomy verandah, where you can enjoy meals and a cheeky drop, underline it. There’s a distinctly un-hotel feel to the resort, and it’s clearly by design. It’s easier to unwind when you feel like you’re staying at a rich friend’s house. My room has eschewed the stale welcome mint approach for a complete cheeseboard and fruit platter partnered with a bottle of champagne, which I can enjoy on my own private terrace with ocean views. Make that a very rich friend.
The island’s agenda is firmly centred on relaxation: you’d think hammocks grew on palm trees here. I could get a lot of reading done, but there’s too much else to do. The enticing ocean views offered by just about every vantage point on Orpheus are a little too inviting: I want to get out on it or deep beneath it. Fortunately, both options are on the table. Snorkelling is a given at a place like this, but there’s nothing routine about the galaxy of aquatic life on parade beneath the waves. At one point, I’m surrounded by a cloud of fish, and the colours threaten to overwhelm me. I let them. Back on the shore, crabs and stingrays look on as I remove my mask and prepare for the cruise. The neighbouring island is accessible by boat, but the Orpheus resort wouldn’t just put you on a dinghy and hope for the best. That’s why I’m on a sunset cruise, enjoying a lychee martini and a grazing platter. The word spoiled comes to mind. Orpheus is home to bushwalks with eye-popping views from Picnic Bay. Again, I’m drawn to the water, so I grab a kayak and paddle into the mangrove forest. Stingrays languidly comb the shallows and tiny crabs scuttle along the mangrove roots as I drift by. The only sound is the gentle lapping of the water against my kayak. Up ahead, a deserted beach calls me over for a swim. Who am I to say no? It’s hard saying farewell to the tropes of

T
he typical framework for thinking about the year ahead is to identify what might be different relative to the previous year. In general, a number of familiar drivers are in play for AUD/USD in 2017; rate differentials between the two countries will compress, commodity prices could halt their run and the Chinese growth rate will continue to ease. What makes 2017 different from recent years are the risks around growth and inflation on the back of increased scope for fiscal stimulus in the US. In turn, this will mean that the narrowing of interest rate differentials will be a more powerful headwind for the AUD than has been the
case in recent years. In Australia, the economy’s gradual recovery in domestic demand should continue, with the mining capex drag fading, and non-mining business investment gathering more momentum. But more importantly, core inflation will stay weak, pressuring the Reserve Bank into a further 50 basis points of easing. In contrast, we expect the Federal Reserve to continue on its normalisation path with 50 basis points of hikes next year. And as the balance of risks around US growth and inflation shift, it is likely that the market will be keener to price in the prospect of higher rates than has been the case in the past. This means that rate spreads should compress by close to 100 basis points in 2017, taking the spread to the lows seen over the last 15 to 20 years. We expect a further slowing in Chinese growth next calendar year; 6.4 per cent versus 6.7 per cent in 2016 and 6.9 per cent in 2015. Our forecast expects more of the same, in the sense that the moderation in growth will be modest, but with AUD already looking rich vs. Chinese growth momentum and China’s leverage ratios
having risen further over the course of the year, it is hard to see the China narrative as supportive for the Australian dollar in coming quarters. And the outlook for commodities – while highly uncertain given the recent price action in both coal and iron ore – isn’t expected to deliver much in the way of support over the medium term, given that the recent momentum in commodity
prices is unlikely to be sustained. The key uncertainty, given the prospect of US fiscal stimulus and the expectation that much of this will be delivered via infrastructure spend, is not so much whether commodity prices fall from extremely elevated levels, but how far they fall. In terms of our forecasts, we forecast AUD/USD to USD0.71 by June 2017. We see a move below USD0.70c as more a story for the second half of the year, as compression in real rate spreads finally becomes a powerful drag on the currency, and target AUD to USD0.68 by year end. A more bearish profile for the currency would probably require a negative shock to Chinese growth or a more rampant inflation dynamic in the US, but this may well be a story for 2018 rather than 2017. FIRST LOCALS LIVED FROM SEA AND FOREST
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY On January 12, 1893, the Post Master General accepted the offer of Mr E.H. Biggs to operate a receiving office free of charge at his orchard, Lutonvale, which became the district name. At a meeting of residents in 1894, the name was changed to Mapleton, for a town in Canada. William Smith told the meeting of a book he was reading and read a sentence referring to “a pretty little place on top of a hill called Mapleton”. The receiving office became a post office in 1910. For thousands of years before Captain James Cook sailed the coastline in 1770, the Gubbi Gubbi were hunting, fishing and caring for their home on the Sunshine Coast, writes DOT WHITTINGTON.

he Gubbi Gubbi language group was made up of a number of tribes. Among them, the Undanbi whose territory was on the coast, east of their pathway from Beerburrum to Cooran, and the Nalbo to the west. The Nalbo had been driven east by the Dallambara, who were also rainforest people. Tribal boundaries were often simply a mark carved into a tree. The Gubbi Gubbi (once spelt Kabi Kabi because the soft ‘G’ sounds more like a ‘K’) roamed the area from the north bank of the Pine River to the Johnson River north of Maryborough and along the eastern side of the ranges to Woodford. The Undanbi who lived near the mouth of the Mooloolah River (Mooloolaba) built huts and were among the few southeast Queensland people to leave examples of their art – pictures of kangaroos emus and dingo footprints in cave on Pt Cartwright. They had distinctive tribal markings and a well-planned society dependent on a strong spiritual and cultural life. John Matthew (1849-1929) who lived with the
people and had a strong grasp of their language, in 1910 recorded his observations in his book Two Representative Tribes of Queensland. This is accepted by the Gubbi Gubbi as the most authoritative account as there has been a lot of guesswork since. Matthews described the people and their habits in considerable detail: “The men were of low stature, the average would not exceed five foot, five. In rare cases a height of about six foot was attained. In proportion to the men, the women were rather tall. The people were light in bone. In walking the head was thrown well back. The hair was luxuriant and wavy.” The Gubbi Gubbi’s fishing techniques rival today’s best tips. They would use the sap extracted from a scrub vine to drug fish in waterholes. If placed in the upper section of a waterhole, the drug would permeate the hole leaving the fish helpless so they could be caught by hand. Around swampy areas, a reed called Smortweed grew. The natives found that by cutting small sections of the reed and

dropping them end-first into the water, the fish could be lured out and captured with relative ease. Another innovative method came from observation of the periodic occurrence of small white witchetty grubs which usually lived in the bark or sap of trees around creeks. For a few weeks each year, they would crawl upon the branches. In areas where the branches dropped over the creeks, it was noticed that any grubs, which fell into the water, became food for the Mary River codfish. This provided great fishing opportunities. When a cyclone or bad weather came, they could travel more than 100 miles west to feast on bunya nuts, a most valued food. They left little footprint on the environment but they did leave their stories of how the Coast’s geography was created. After at least 40,000 years, their fortunes changed in the 1800s when the first white men, escaped convicts, arrived and word got back to the Moreton Bay settlement of a rich and forested area to the north. The North Coast would never be the same again for these original locals.

In 1917, his son Robert Jr, a Landsborough Shire councillor, subdivided part of the holding and it became known as Bulcock Beach. Caloundra had a population of 271 by 1933.

KIDS WILL LOVE RED RIDING HOOD Words: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane Kennedy Fox has been gracing stages across the Sunshine Coast since 1970, taking on everything from the role of the dragon in The Reluctant Dragon to the pantomime hero. But the 69-year-old Buderim resident says he has reached a point in his life where playing the traditional dame role, an exaggerated comic female character, is now his calling. Fox has entertained many audiences as one of the ugly stepsisters in three different productions of Cinderella in the past 12 years, but his latest role sees him transform into Dame Trot in Red Riding Hood. “Dame Trot is Red’s grandmother who is very forgetful and has short-term memory loss,” Fox says. “She has to eat the leaf of a forget-me-not to bring her memory back and I ask the audience to help me remember to eat it.” Fox says he loves the thrill of the pantomime because there is a real interaction with the audience. “It gives the kids something different to do other than watching TV or playing computer games. They can be really connected and hiss and boo at the evil characters and shout out and get involved with others. You can’t do that when you go and watch a movie,” he says. The sportiest member of the Q5 model series embodies the emotional concept of the practical SUV featuring the latest technology. The turbocharged 3.0 TFSI V6 engine offers powerful performance combined with further enhanced efficiency. While a new combustion process developed by Audi makes the 3.0 TFSI particularly efficient. MG AWARDED SAFETY RATING Australia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate, ANCAP, has this week published safety ratings for the MG GS medium SUV. The latest offering from the Chinese MG stable fell shy of the top rating with a four-star ANCAP safety rating awarded. “The GS is a good car structurally, offering sound levels of occupant protection however its safety specification is lacking,” says ANCAP CEO James Goodwin. “Consumers have come to expect a higher standard of safety features and unfortunately it falls short of the top safety rating.” Autonomous emergency braking, lane support systems and intelligent seat belt reminders for second row occupants are not offered on the GS. “We are working with MG to see if a specification upgrade can be put in place in the hope the model can offer another five-star option for medium SUV buyers.”

ousing Industry Association figures released this month show the volume of approvals for new dwellings bounced back strongly during the month of November. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett says new dwelling approvals rose by seven per cent compared with the previous month, but were 4.8 per cent lower than in November 2015. “November was a particularly good month on the multi-unit side of the market with approvals increasing by 17.3 per cent during the month following a big fall in October,” Garrett says. “Detached house approvals declined slightly by 0.4 per cent during November. However, over recent months the detached house side of the market has been considerably more stable than multi-units. “The year 2016 was a record one for new dwelling commencements and this will ensure that the volume of residential building activity remains elevated over much of 2017.” Despite the largest increase in seasonally-adjusted dwelling approvals occurring in Western Australia, which

Despite the trend, Garrett says the HIA anticipates new dwelling approvals will decline nationwide over the next 12 months, with this likely to “be felt on the ground” towards the end of this year. With several greenfield sites, including Aura, Harmony at Palmview and Oceanside at Kawana, coming online this year, the Sunshine Coast will be sure to buck the state and national trend and continue to attract new homebuyers and investors, boosting the new dwelling approvals across the region.

Surfing without a leg rope? I know the hipsters love to do it, as do the traditional loggers, but I recently witnessed stupidity at the highest level while in Byron. There were packed waves with quite a few people not wearing leg ropes. I witnessed an unskilled surfer trying to be cool. the outcome? A runaway board smashed into the face of a three-year-old who has having fun in the white water. A logger board with a wave behind it could easily smash a child’s head. What if your board kills a child and you know you could have placed a leg rope on but did not? Manslaughter charge? Negligence causing death? It’s food for thought. I wouldn’t want that on my conscience. I grew up dodging carnage, but seeing an innocent child get smacked got me thinking.

Mud crabs working up in Eudlo and Petrie Creeks. Grunter bream taking prawns at Bli Bli. SURF: Tarwhine and bream off the rocks at Pincushion on the high tide. Chopper tailor are working both Maroochy and Mooloolah bar entrances right on dusk using pillies. OFFSHORE: Parrot, scorpion cod and sweetlip between the Gneerings and Murphy’s Reef, using squid and mullet fillet. The Barwon banks for snapper, pearlies and mixed reef fish with pillies and squid best. Night tides are better on the full moon. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning golden perch, bass and saratoga this week on a variety of lures and flies with a few silver perch being caught on earthworms. Lake Baroon has been active for bass with dawn and dusk best. This is one impoundment where even the kids will catch a few spangled perch. Don’t forget your stocked impoundment license.

A LOST CAUSE Richard O’Leary says mental maps and mindfulness can give us a better sense of direction than Google Maps.
I
t’s been scientifically proven that men have a better sense of direction than women.* Just for the record, I am not one of those men. When they were dishing out the sense of direction I was badly lost between the lines for self-deprecating humour and multiple neuroses. Which means I am one of the few blokes you may know who isn’t afraid of asking for directions. Wanderlust for me usually ends up with aimless trudging through the back streets of some foreign city while muttering ‘I wonder why I’m lost?’ But help is at hand. A new, improved technological device? No, the opposite in fact. Experts say the more we rely on GPS devices or apps on smartphones, the less we try and develop a better sense of direction, the downward spiral continuing until we can’t find our way out of a closet. So what are the solutions? Let’s start with mental maps.
Study the route before you set off, trace it with your finger and picture yourself walking, cycling, or driving down that path. When you arrive (the word ‘when’ may be replaced with ‘if’ depending upon the seriousness of your spatial deficiencies), review the route you have taken to reinforce the memory of your journey.

Take in everything that you are walking or driving past. Make a mental note of landmarks, large buildings, unusual trees, traffic lights and signs.
