t’s interesting how a stranger can leave a lasting and positive imprint on your mind. A little over two years ago I had a brief encounter with a kindly woman at a shopping centre. She offered to take the trolley and return it for me. It was a small gesture. I was exhausted and struggling with a newborn baby. To be honest, she probably took one look at the dark circles, the unwashed hair, that scary look of a first-time mother and thought she had better do something. The gratitude and appreciation I felt as a result of her random act of kindness has stayed with me. November 13 is World Kindness Day and this week we chat with Michael Lloyd-White, the man who is building Kindness Cells throughout the nation. It’s a timely reminder of how easy it is to spread goodwill and bring a smile to someone’s face. Also this week, Leigh Robshaw speaks with another kind-hearted soul. Mark Forbes is raising awareness and funds for the establishment of the Coast’s first dedicated facility for sufferers of eating disorders. He bravely shares the story of his own daughters’ battle with bulimia. And in Home Style, we chat with the inspiring and beautiful Shaynna Blaze who imparts her design predictions for 2017. FROM THE BRONCOS TO THE BEACH Recently-retired Brisbane Broncos player Jack Reed has teamed up with Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club to run a new suite of community initiatives. BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

WHERE ON THE COAST DO YOU LIVE? I am currently looking for a new house on the Sunshine Coast after recently retiring from the Broncos. While I do have a property at Sippy Downs, I would love to get a little closer to the beach, so if anyone knows of good place, please let me know.

I would say it’s a flip of the coin between marrying my beautiful wife Karen and the day my daughter Quinn was born. Both days will sit with me forever.

FIRST JOB?

The day I came to the Broncos was pretty special and certainly was a big turning point for me. The Broncos is a great club with an outstanding culture and some wonderful mentors for young men.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

My first job was at Red Rooster Bribie Island. I was 15 years old and I loved it. Still remember taking the leftovers at the end of night shift and having them for lunch the next day at school.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I personally have no regrets in my life, I was told at a young age to live my life with no regrets and I have done that.

A key focus for me in the short term will be tackling my new role with the Broncos in game development, settling my family on the Sunshine Coast as well as finalising my Cert IV in small business management.

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? In rugby league I feel my greatest achievements were getting to play for my country of England, because I felt I was giving back to my parents for all the sacrifices they made when I was a child, and of course debuting for the Brisbane Broncos in 2011, a moment I’ll never forget as long as I live.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… Wife Karen, my nine-month-old daughter Quinn, my parents Joe and Kath and sister Emily. The rest of my family live over in England. I try to get back and visit as often as possible.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?

My father told me that if you commit to anything in life, give it your all, ‘cause that way you can walk away from it and know you’ve done your best. That has always stuck with me throughout my life.

Reedy or just Red (‘cause of the hair).

FIRST CAR? My first car was a little red Nissan Pulsar, which the old man bought for me once I got my licence. While it wasn’t the best wheels in the world, it did the job and got me around the roads of Bribie.

FAVOURITE BOOK? One that’s always stuck with me is Scar Tissue, the story of the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was an interesting insight into the life of a rock star.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? The sport section of the newspaper or Rugby League Week.

FAVOURITE SONG? I’m an old soul, so my favourite tune would have to be Hotel California by The Eagles. I love sitting on the back deck, throwing on my old vinyls and letting the classics roll.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I’m with my family and friends sitting down having a cold beer and a great feed that mum’s whipped up at home.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? When people don’t use their manners. I was taught at a young age by my parents that manners cost nothing and a large part of our role as rugby league players was to do community work and to see kids not using their manners eats me up.

FAVOURITE PLACE? My favourite place would have to be Mooloolaba – beautiful beaches, great weather, outstanding surf club and great variety of bars, restaurants and cafes.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? I normally go between three places: Mooloolaba Surf Club, the Beach Bar and Grill and in Marcoola I get out to the Surfair Beach Hotel. Good friends own the place there.

Don’t be so cheeky to your mother. I always had a quick comeback as a child because I was a lot smaller than everyone else, so I tended to be a lot cheekier.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

TEA OR COFFEE? Being English I’m a tea drinker and I have it white, no sugar.

I wouldn’t change a thing. I feel the Coast has the best bits of Queensland all mixed into one, with the amazing beaches and weather and it also being a popular tourist attraction, you can’t go wrong with keeping it much the same.

NRL OR AFL? NRL every day of the week and believe it or not, I’m a Broncos supporter.

THE PLANNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE COASTAL VILLAGE Sekisui House invites the community to get the information and have their say. Coolum Resort & Spa at Yaroomba Beach, and Starwood will bring its international tourism experience to the process of planning for the first 5 Star hotel on the Sunshine Coast in nearly 30 years. The Yaroomba Beach site is a disused former golf course and is recognised as one of only two key, undeveloped Tourism Focus Areas on the Sunshine Coast – specifically set aside as primary locations for tourism related activities, facilities and infrastructure. Establishing a 5 Star eco-tourism resort will generate hundreds of local jobs and inject millions of tourism dollars into local businesses every year. Importantly the 5 Star eco-tourism

resort will be developed in the 1st stage. The important parabolic and frontal dunes that adjoin the site are not owned by Sekisui House, not included in the project and will not be developed. Sekisui House is targeting world class sustainability outcomes for the site, maintaining some of the mature vegetation and reducing the amount of imported fill under the new framework. Sekisui House is highly awarded for sustainable development in Australia and overseas and these values will be applied to the Yaroomba Beach project.

CULTIVATING KINDNESS It costs nothing to be kind and a global kindness movement could be just the reboot our society needs. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

“Guess how many times you will find the word ‘kindness’ if you do a search online in the Naplan website? Zero”

he dictionary defines kindness as “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” It sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? And yet, when was the last time you took some time out of your day to make someone else smile? This is the question being posed by Sydneysider Michael Lloyd-White, the man who is on a mission to change Australian culture and embed the act of kindness into the wider community. “We are turning into a nation of bystanders,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “Kindness has gone MIA. It’s been mistaken for weakness, hearts and flowers, sugar and spice. Wellness and mindfulness seem to be peppered into HR documents and core values. “The message has been muddied and we need to clear that up, as kindness is an incredibly powerful word. “Guess how many times you will find the word ‘kindness’ if you do a search online in the Naplan website? Zero. This is the national standard testing for our children. “Kindness is the collaboration for change. It’s engagement and embedding it in the community. It’s about spreading change. We are subliminally educating our children to be mean-spirited. Whose fault

is that?” Lloyd-White is the General Secretary of the global organisation, The World Kindness Movement. He is the first Australian to sit on the executive committee of the not-for-profit group, which aims to foster goodwill on a local, national and international level. Speaking to My Weekly Preview on the eve of World Kindness Day on November 13, Lloyd-White says, in a somewhat surprising

Worldwide, there are 40 sub-branches working together under the global banner in America, Canada, Thailand, Israel, Korea, India and China. It’s a business model that works in a society that is tiring of digging deep into their pockets, Lloyd-White says. “Australia doesn’t have a not-for-profit sector; we have a not-for-profit industry. It turns over $107 billion a year. To put that

into perspective, our Defence Force budget and our public service budget combined are still smaller. “World Kindness doesn’t turn over half a billion dollars a year. We are self-funded and don’t accept grants or donations.” Instead, the organisation encourages people to volunteer, support community groups, positively influence each other and work with ambassadors to promote goodwill. “Guess how much that costs? Nothing,’’ the father of two says. “If you want to bring around change, you want it to last longer than a leader’s tenure; embed change. “We want people to join the campaign, form a Kindness Cell and become actively engaged wherever they may be by placing kindness on the agenda and having a conversation in kindness. This is always a great starting point.” Dr Rhiannon Bell from Mooloolaba’s Psychology Cafe says World Kindness Day is an excellent way to raise awareness of the importance of kindness and encourage people to be kind. She says it is important to remember that kindness should not be limited to one day, but be cultivated in small, everyday gestures. “Kindness can be much simpler and myweeklypreview.com.au

If we want kindness to become an enduring personal characteristic, and not just an occasional random act, we need to make the deliberate choice to engage in kind behaviours. “While massive gestures of kindness are indeed generous and impressive, perhaps what’s more remarkable is making kindness a way of life – consistently showing kindness to others each day, even when we don’t feel like it, even when no one else notices, and when we may not be affirmed for our kind gestures. “Small acts may include making lunch for your colleague, holding the door open for someone, letting the person behind you in line at the grocery store checkout before you, mowing your neighbour’s lawn, being nice to the telemarketer, making someone a meal and speaking affirming words to your spouse. “As Aesop wisely stated: ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted’.” Bell says kindness communicates an ‘I see you, I value you’ feeling for the recipient and cites scientific studies that have shown being kind can also have physical and mental benefits, such as reversing feelings of depression or isolation, reducing body inflammation, improving relationships, providing a feeling of euphoria and improving stress-related health problems.

Kindness comes in all forms. Take Monika Sprott for example. On any given day she can be found delivering a beautiful bouquet of plants and vegetables to businesses in Kawana. As a member of Buddina Community Garden, Sprott is one of 60 people who spend hours each week digging, planting and bringing new life to Kevin Asmus Park. The project, which was founded in 2011, acts as a village centre with a core focus of fostering community spirit. “People are free to come in and look around and enjoy seeing the food growing organically. We are all growing together, growing food and growing community spirit,” Sprott says. “Community spirit happens naturally when people come together in a garden. People of all ages…learn from and share with each other. At times there is more produce than we need; if we have too much basil, we make and share pesto. “It has the feel of a village where we all look out for each other. BRIDGE INTO THE CITY OF COLOUR OPENS A $5 million, 75-metre bridge from Bellvista into Aura’s first suburb, Baringa, has opened. The colourful bridge on Aura Boulevard includes the first stage of the new city’s Veloway, a dedicated two-way cycleway that will eventually join more than 200 kilometres of cycle paths. Stockland Sunshine Coast Regional Manager Ben Simpson says the unique wave effect of the bridge’s design reflects the vibrant City of Colour vision, with 75 different colour variations across 39 diamond facets. The bridge includes specialised fauna crossings, including a ‘frog highway’ under the bridge, ropes overhead for possums and native marsupials and a wide landscaped verge for fauna to safely navigate Lamerough Creek.

INAUGURAL KIDSFORKIDS CONCERT RAISES $20,000 The successful KidsFORKids concert attracted more than 500 people to Aussie World in September and more than $20,000 was raised thanks to the efforts of cofounders Tim and Sam Aitken. The Aitken brothers presented teenagers Bella Harry and Declan Walker and their families with just over $10,000 each last weekend. 744 HECTARES BOBSTOCK ROCKS THE SHED The Bob Irwin Wildlife and Conservation Foundation Inc received a huge lift following the inaugural Bobstock Music Festival. A dedicated group of supporters, dubbed Bob’s Army, joined forces with hundreds of fans to enjoy a conservationthemed rock music festival at The Shed at Aussie World. Buck Dean and the Green Lips, Whiskey And Me, DOSED, TOISOC, Mantra and Cameron Black entertained festivalgoers while 100 per cent of proceeds from ticket sales were given to the foundation to educate the community, support grassroots conservation groups and advocate for greater environmental protection.

Mooloolah River National Park will be 744 hectares bigger after the Queensland Government added forest containing habitat for threatened species. Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles says the addition will conserve biologically diverse old growth forest and wetlands. Miles says the 14 per cent expansion will mean the national park will cover a total of 1670 hectares. Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey says his department will minimise the impact of the $929.3 million Bruce Highway upgrade to Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway, which is adjacent to this area.

CASINO STUDY DIVIDES COAST LEADERS The State Government will investigate the desire for another Queensland casino and the Sunshine Coast is one of six areas being considered. It is news that has divided community leaders in the council, tourism and business sectors. Among the supporters is Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich, who says this is a rare opportunity and an integrated resort development will significantly enhance the region’s tourism offering, while also appealing to new markets visiting the area as a result of the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion. “An integrated resort development would likely include retail, dining and entertainment components, so basing it in the Sunshine Coast’s commercial centre is both logical and financially prudent, as well as the most family friendly option,” she says. TACKLING EATING DISORDERS HEAD ON Buddina man Mark Forbes is determined to open the Coast’s first dedicated facility for sufferers of eating disorders. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

ou wouldn’t know Mark Forbes had been through hell. As he openly discusses the difficulties he and his wife have been through as the parents of two daughters with bulimia, his positive demeanour belies the struggles he’s endured. Rather than fall prey to despondency, he has vowed to create more local support for those suffering from eating disorders and their families. Forbes founded EndED with his wife 20 months ago in order to support families of eating disorder sufferers and raise funds to open a purpose-built facility called EndED House. It will offer access to medical specialists, counselling, educational resources and ongoing support. With hospital beds in short supply, a dedicated facility for those battling eating disorders would be a first for the Coast and something that would have helped the Forbes family on their difficult journey. “We’ve got two daughters with bulimia – one is 36 and the other is 23,” says Forbes. “The eldest has had it since she was 16 and the youngest since she was 14. It’s an extremely hard road for the children and an extremely hard road for parents and families and anyone who’s attached to the family.” While Forbes’ eldest daughter is married with three children and stable, his youngest daughter Jorgia is still in the thick of it and through DNA testing, has been found to be genetically predisposed to the disease. “Every day is a blessing if she is still here with us,” says Forbes. “It’s very draining. Jorgia would get down to 38 kilos and go straight to hospital, get a tube down the throat to force feed her. That’s fine, it saves her life, but then within a week or two, she’s out and still dealing with it.” The way Forbes describes how the eating disorder snuck up on his family is frightening. “Eating disorders can be in your house before you even know their presence,” he says. “You put it down to your child going through teenage growth periods or mood changes and you just keep making excuses for their behaviour without understanding what is actually going on. This eating disorder can be in your house for a couple of years without you even knowing what it is. Unfortunately, by the time you discover it, it’s already got its claws deep into your child. “The psychologists always say it’s healthier to deal with the eating disorder (ED) as a separate entity to your child – you say ED has a hold of your child. You can see when ED is running freely throughout your child. They can have a different voice, there’s definitely a difference in the eyes – they are very angry and raging. It’s like a possession. It’s very scary and daunting and unless you’ve got support, it’s very difficult to deal with. “As a parent you feel like you’ve failed your child, you feel

guilt, you feel like you’ve let them down, you blame yourself, you question yourself, you keep going back in history thinking, what have I done wrong?” Forbes says it’s essential to have the support of other parents who understand the ordeal, which is why he and his wife have opened their home to run an EndED support group once a fortnight. “In our meetings, sometimes we run out of tissue boxes and have to get the toilet paper out because there’s so many tears,” he says. “People can walk away from these meetings and feel like they’re not alone.” Forbes wants EndED House to offer a day clinic and long-stay accommodation and he has his eye on a $6 million facility in Buderim. “It’s absolutely ideal for what we are trying to achieve…we need support from government, council and the community.” Forbes runs his own business, a self storage facility at Kunda Park, but says he devotes 95 per cent of his time to volunteering for EndED and his other passion, his role as president of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association. He has now combined his passions to help organise the

Sunshine Coast’s first triple-charity event, Waterlife. A day of outrigger canoeing and paddling races, it will raise money for Wishlist, EndED and No Limits Adapative Paddling and will be held at Lake Kawana on December 3. Forbes is also lobbying Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, to have government policy changed. “At the moment, when your child has turned 16, the medical profession locks you out of the discussion,” he says. “The medical profession takes over and you lose the right to have input into your child’s treatment. “When a child has an eating disorder the brain doesn’t get the nutrition it needs and that child cannot think straight. We need the policy changed; if a child has been diagnosed with an eating disorder, the system needs to include the parents.” It’s not only children with an eating disorder who can’t think straight – it’s their parents. Forbes says the issue consumes him and while he has channelled his distress into positive action, he has had many dark nights of the soul. “It’s a 24/7 thing, you go to bed thinking about it, you wake up through the night and it’s there, you wake up thinking about it. It’s always there and it takes a toll.”

EUROPE’S GRAPE ESCAPES Europe is overflowing with beautiful vineyards, wineries and holiday hideaways. Here are three wonderful regions to visit. DOURO VALLEY, PORTUGAL A calloused, sweaty foot would not be my cooking utensil of choice, but according to numerous Portuguese winemakers, human tootsies are the perfect tool for pummelling grapes. Far gentler (and with more personality) than a steel machine, treading softens the treasured ingredient without extracting any nasty tannins from seeds. Getting into the spirit of harvest season, I climb into a legare (wine vat) at Quinta da Pacheca and stomp alongside proudly professional old men as they rotate lower limbs in perfect harmony, accompanied by a cheerful accordionist. Sloshing through alcoholic gazpacho is one of the activities offered by Six Senses Douro Valley in late September, although year-round, there’s good reason to visit one of the world’s oldest wine regions. Traditionally known for port production, the Unesco World Heritage area has earned a reputation for award-winning table wines in the last 25 years - made mostly by a new generation of experimental winemakers who are breathing new life into old practices. Many are invited to lead tasting sessions and dinners at Six Senses, where Tiago Alves de Sousa, who works with his father at

Quinta da Gaivosa, introduces me to Abandonado, a wine he was responsible for producing from resurrected vines neglected by the family. “Diversity is what makes this place so wonderful,” he tells me, referring to the 90 grape varieties grown on a cascade of undulating hills that appear to billow like sails in the wind. Growing popularity of the Douro has done little to disturb a traditional way of life in villages such as Lamego, where I decline the traditional option to climb 686 steps to reach the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios shrine on my knees. A similar peacefulness pervades the forested grounds of Six Senses, where I enjoy a massage in the hotel’s spa overlooking the snaking Douro River, and hang in a wicker pod nestled between branches while listening to bird song.

meeting with a councillor back in the 1960s, in which the dignitary was asked about his thoughts on attracting more tourists to the small city in the Rhone-Alpes region. “Why should I want people coming here to drink our best wine?” was his response. He had a point, and as I end the trip, clutching a few bottles of Beaujolais red, I am grateful that they are now happy to share the wealth.

SARDON DE DUERO, SPAIN Wine and wellbeing aren’t an obvious marriage, but as I sip and sniff my way through a flight of fine tipples, I’m easily convinced this could be the path to rude health. This innovative approach to choosing a treatment is part of the Spa Sommelier experience at award-winning winery and hotel Abadia Retuerta Le Domaine. Based on my wine preference, an appropriate oil fragrance is selected and I’m treated to a morning of massage and steam room sessions in the Santuario Spa, housed in the former stables of a 12th-century abbey. The main building of the property has been meticulously restored as a hotel, with one-Michelin starred restaurant, Refectorio, occupying a space once used as a dining room for monks. It’s possible to take bike rides through 200 hectares of vineyards or tour winemaking facilities a short walk down the road. But once settled into my garden room looking out to the vines, with a butler happy to attend every whim, I raise a glass in the knowledge the monks would approve.

Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball says effective communication relies on so much more than mere words.

he Big Pineapple is about as iconic to the Sunshine Coast as you can get. I have a photo standing in front of the massive pineapple when I am about two years old. This Christmas, our family is putting on Santa hats and getting the best Christmas card selfie in the world in front of the Big Pineapple. As Aussies, we are all a bit obsessed with building and visiting big things. We just had a holiday to South Australia where the big ticket tourist items include Coonawarra, Kangaroo Island and The Adelaide Zoo. But I was desperate to forget the well-known destinations and go and check out The Big Lobster. The big crustacean is found in Kingston in rural South Australia. He is massive. And bright orange. He even has a name: Larry the Lobster. Larry is 17 metres tall and made my kids scream in terror. You know why? Larry is missing his head, for crying out loud. Poor old Lazza has seen better days and is need of some massive plastic surgery. The weather has beaten him around for three decades and now his head has come off and is being repaired. My two-year-old is still screaming out in the middle of the night “Lobster! NO HEAD! Bad lobster”. The four-year-old thought the lobster had been decapitated by Ninja Turtles and my five-year-old girl (the serious child) just looked and scowled and shook her head. If any of my kids are being naughty, all I have

to do is threaten to call the ghostly headless lobster and they turn into angels. It’s estimated we have 150 big icons around our beautiful country. The first to be erected was the Big Scotsman in Adelaide, built in 1963. A few weeks ago, the Big Banana was crowned the best ‘big’ attraction in the nation by travel website wotif.com after it surveyed 2000 holidaymakers. Our Big Pineapple was pipped for the gold, but did pick up the silver medal. Personally, I think we were ripped off because a pineapple screams friendly and

The survey also found 52 per cent of us have taken a holiday snap with a big icon. My question is this: what on earth are the other 48 per cent thinking? You need to get yourselves to a big icon for a selfie, quick sticks. Now I am off to dig out more Christmas props for the family photo at Nambour. It is going to be a keeper. And we do not have to worry about the pineapple’s head rolling off and scaring the kids.

As someone who has spent almost 30 years earning a living as a paid communicator, I am amazed at how ineffective words can be. I truly believe that any problem between people can be resolved through effective communication. And communication is easier than at any time in history. Yet, despite living in a bountiful and amazing world, as I’ve recently opined, there seems to be more problems between people than ever before. Am I wrong? Is communication not the key to resolving disputes? Is something more required? Perhaps there’s something to what old Picasso had to say. Children, no matter their age, rarely have issues communicating among one another. Introduce an adult to the equation and that’s generally where the problems begin. As adults, we tend to focus so much on the spoken (or written) word, to the detriment of our other senses. Understanding a child then, is naturally problematic. Watch a young child talking on the phone for the first time and you’ll see what I mean. And in that is the basic assumption about language we are often not taught. There is something ‘lost in translation’

between delivery and receipt. The more basic the method of delivery, the more likely the intended message is not the one received (or, at the very least, understood). Words are symbols, no more. They are not magic, in and of themselves. They require context; delivery, tone, history, volume and so much more. Words necessitate an understanding by their recipient; her history, her context, her mood, her everything. The less you have of that, the less effective the message. So, it is no wonder that humanity has such affinity for the creation and appreciation of art. In all its forms. Effective communication requires so much more

“And communication is easier than at any time in history” than the mere symbols represented by the alphabet. We’ve all had that time when left speechless. Some things cannot be explained or felt in words. A child needs no vocabulary to get the message. A picture, a melody, a sculpture or even the simple act of making tea can say so much more. Come to think of it, in my next opening submission I will just roll out Blue Poles; though maybe Ride of the Valkyrie would work better.

The app also lets users create their own chat stories and share stories with others. It’s almost like your own chat diary, but the entire world can read it. There are new stories added daily.

An Australian-built antenna that will help in the journey to Mars and maybe Jupiter’s moon is officially ready for work. The latest spacecraft-tracking antenna, known as Deep Space Station 36 (DSS36), has been in the making since February 2010 at Canberra’s Deep Space Communication Complex – a NASA facility managed by the CSIRO – in Tidbinbilla. It is the second of two new 34-metre antennas. The first began operations in 2014. The DSS36 will help provide two-way communication for human and robotic missions, enabling data to be sent to and from earth. It will also likely assist in missions to Jupiter’s moon Europa and support the move towards a return to human spaceflight beyond Earth’s orbit in the next decade. AAP

INCREASE YOUR RECYCLING Our Sunshine Coast residents are getting very good at recycling. Last financial year, we successfully diverted 101,296 tonnes from landfill with 39 per cent of all waste generated recycled. That’s a massive help to our environment. But we know we can do even better. Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week is underway, highlighting the many opportunities for improvements in waste reduction and recycling for Sunshine Coast residents. To help out, we’re holding a free Recycle Right Open Day on Saturday, November 12 from 9.30 to 11.30am at the Waste2Resource Education Centre in Cooney Rd, Nambour, where everything there is to know about recycling will be revealed and some myths will be busted. We’ll provide some take-home tips and tricks and morning tea. Bookings are essential – visit council’s website or call 5475 7272 to secure your spot.

PRECINCT PARKING GOES HI-TECH Hi-tech parking infrastructure including sensors and smart meters able to be paid and topped up with coins, credit cards and smartphones will be installed in the Sunshine Coast health precinct at Birtinya. From January 30, 2017, the new parking technology will make it easier and more convenient for those driving to the precinct to find a park, to pay and to top up. Passengers will be able to use an EasyPark app to locate parking spaces for their drivers and, if staying longer than planned, can top up via the app or by calling 1300 734 070 when away from their car for a maximum of two hours. This smart technology is being installed in the lead-up to the opening of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, next door to the already operational Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. Businesses in the area are also coming online and seeking high vehicle turnover to better service their customers and

increase patronage. To provide that turnover, two-hour parking limits will apply 24/7 on parking bays along Birtinya Boulevard, Eccles Boulevard, Bright Place and Shine Court from November 16. While the two-hour parking limits apply 24/7, drivers will only be charged for on-street parking between 8am to 5pm. The smart parking meters and sensors for the 127 on-street parking bays on those streets will be installed during the week beginning November 7, but they will not become operational until January 30. Long-term users such as patients, visitors and hospital staff will be encouraged to use the four secure parking lots located on the Sunshine Coast Health Campus and in the Oceanside Health Hub. First there was timber, then came dairies, rich and fertile orchards and cane farms – primary production was the backbone of the Sunshine Coast, writes Dot Whittington

hey called it “red gold” and timber cutters and hauliers – the first men to cut tracks up the slopes of the Blackall Range in search of cedar – were well rewarded. Timber getting was first recorded in the Government Gazette of 1864. In Maleny, cedar logs were taken down the range and hauled either to James Campbell’s sawmill at Coochin Creek and on to Brisbane or to Bribie Passage for transport to Sydney and Melbourne. In Montville, logging of cedar, beech and pine was its first industry. Timber was transported down the range by chutes. Logs were pushed from the escarpment and then transported by bullocks and later, when the Palmwoods line was completed, by train. In the early 1880s, men began arriving in Mapleton in search of softwood timber which would be rafted along the Maroochy River and milled in Brisbane.

On November 15, 1889, 20-year-old Thomas Smith lodged an application with the Lands Department for a 65 hectare selection on the western ridge of the Blackall Range near Mapleton. He and his 21-year-old brother William had been sent by their father, David, from Redland Bay to pursue land for banana growing on the summit of the range. The brothers took the train as far as it was constructed, to Caboolture, then Cobb and Co coach to Woombye where they stayed overnight. In the morning they set off carrying heavy swags up the rough, steep timber tracks to Dulong and then along snigging tracks to the foot of the range. From there it was straight up to the top, 427 metres above sea level. It took them two days to beat their way through the thick scrub to the top.

Smoke rises from a canefire, a regular scene during the harvest at the end of each year Red cedar, beech, hoop and bunya pines were hauled to the range edge, slid over the side and hauled by bullock teams to the Maroochy and other rivers for shipment to Brisbane. When timber stocks were exhausted, the cleared land soon produced bountiful fruit orchards. By the turn of the century, bananas, citrus and pineapples were being cultivated from the range to Buderim. The pineapple and citrus industries were the mainstay of the local economy for more than half of the 20th century. Bulk loading of fruit at Palmwoods and Woombye led the state between 1961 and 1972. Meanwhile, in Nambour, the Moreton Central Sugar Mill Company had been formed in December 1894. It opened for crushing in 1897, and a year later, the first cane tramline was built in Howard Street. Cane was brought in from Valdora through Bli Bli to Sippy Downs and the

canefires created a memorable spectacle during the harvesting season through spring and into December. Nambour became the lifeblood of the region and from a small settlement rose to become the capital of what would be the Sunshine Coast. The mill closed in 2003, the last of the sugar cane farms were turned over to real estate or other ventures and the hinterland conceded that the economy was now based on the commercial enterprises of the Coast.

The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. • A large cedar on Frank Dunlop’s selection at Maleny gained worldwide fame when it won a prize in the Franco-British Exhibition in London in 1908. The log had a circumference of 627 centimetres. A combined team of 60 bullocks hauled the log up the steep Walker’s Pinch. It was sent to London and cut lengthways into equal parts. One half was polished for exhibition and is still housed in a London museum. • In 1916, a fire broke out in shops at the corner of Currie and Howard Streets in Nambour. In a futile effort to stop the spread of blaze, the premises of the dentist Mr Nash were blown up with gelignite. In all, 16 buildings were lost.

or a while we’ve thought the Australian market would be range-bound for the rest of this year. Headwinds include stretched valuations, potential bond market volatility and a lack of conviction around global activity and earnings. Underpinning the market though is the attractive yield on offer in a world of low interest rates. The general sentiment among active institutional investors appears to be the need for more confirmation on earnings and events before adding further to positions in a market where many valuation measures remain stretched.

Investors are also weighing up the risks of disorderly shifts in central bank policies and the political landscape (including the US election). Outlined below is a checklist of items that addresses the question: what do we need to see to become more positive on the broader market? We’ll get to tick off many of these items in coming months, and if there’s good progress on the majority, then confidence would be bolstered. This would lead the way for the market to break free from its trading range. The checklist: Clarity from central banks – the economic and financial system is more sensitive to the direction of interest rates today given debt levels globally are higher, and ultra-low rates have stimulated asset prices. The risks and rewards on rate movements are becoming more finely balanced. Pushing rates too low has unintended consequences, including putting pressure on the banking system, while raising rates could shut growth off too

“Investors are also weighing up the risks of disorderly shifts in central bank policies and the political landscape” early. Markets need to be confident that central banks can avoid any major market disruption when communicating their

policy intentions. Reducing political gridlock – the political landscape has become more fractured, preventing policies that stimulate growth. A shift towards more protectionist policies also seems counter-productive. Improved confidence in banks – especially around capital adequacy. Economic activity and earnings – earnings forecasts seem out of sync with readings on economic activity, which leaves earnings forecasts prone to downside risks unless these indicators improve. As usual, there are many matters creating uncertainty. So focus on your asset allocation in the first place and thereafter where your funds are invested.

FREE MUSIC IN THE PARK Dan Horne has a one-man show, which will mesmerise and entertain at the next instalment of the Peregian Originals. The Sunshine Coast-based performer has been musically influenced by diverse genres and has a distinct folk, roots and heavy blues sound. He picked up his first guitar at a young age and in his 20s, Horne travelled around the world and gigged and skied his way around the French Alps. He will be sure to get the toes tapping at the free family event alongside entertainer Jimmy Watts, who is completing a tour to promote his sixth independent release entitled 10 Years.

Now, The Black Sorrows will bring their eclectic show, featuring songs from the Faithful Satellite album, to the Sunshine Coast this weekend. The album has been described as “a glorious potpourri” that takes in gospel, zydeco, reggae, Texas swing, old-school R&B, soul, gospel and dub.

just returned from my annual check up at the doctors this week. Everyone relax, I wrote annual. Anyway, he reckons I need to break a sweat twice a day. I told him ‘no dramas. I’ll start lying to my wife’. Thing is I’ve been having severe stomach pains for the past week and he told me I have acute appendicitis. Compared to who? He then noted he’d seen my 83-year-old Mum earlier that day and told me she had acute angina.

I didn’t ask any more questions. Quick community service announcement to the person who lost a wad of 50 buck notes wrapped up in a rubber band at Buddina shops on Tuesday. Good news, I found the rubber band. You’re welcome. Sad news this week, my friend’s dog died so I bought her an identical dog. She was more upset, yelling: “what am I going to do with two dead dogs?”. I know right, some people. My wife and I celebrated our 19th year of being together as a couple. She said she didn’t care what I bought her as long as it had lots of diamonds in it. Sadly, as usual I misread that and bought her a deck of cards. Not the first time I’ve epically failed in the gift stakes. Last Christmas I bought her a fridge, she didn’t really like it to begin with, but when she opened the door at night, well you should have seen her face light up. Been thinking this week I’d love to know who the financial nut was who passed up the chance to call German currency Germoney. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

More good news from my bank this week. I’m clearly ace at managing my credit card because they sent me a letter saying my account was outstanding. Good on me. On that note, time for something slightly more refreshing – the latest incarnation of the full strength, low carb XXXX Summer Bright.

While I’m not a huge fan of infused brews, this is a definite step up from the lime, which isn’t too bad either. It’s a real ripper for the summer ahead when cracking a cold one before church on Christmas day isn’t frowned upon by Nan, it’s encouraged. I give the new XXXX Summer Bright Lager with Mango 3 out of 5 thumbs up.

Colour is still big and we are going for rich blues, purples and soft taupes. Grain and texture in timber is a big feature and lighting is the new artwork.

SETTING SOME NEW RULES AAP’s Peter Atkinson questions if Jaguar’s newest vehicle is a dynamic sports car or a beautiful SUV.

hey’ve become an icon by building some of the most desirable luxury sedans and sports cars the world has seen. So what the heck, you might ask, would the people at Jaguar know about building an SUV?

Well, quite a bit as it turns out. The grand old British brand is but the latest in a long line of unlikely recruits to the SUV revolution – a charge started by Porsche with its once controversial, now commonplace Cayenne and more recently

joined by the likes of Bentley, Maserati and even Lamborghini. Now Jaguar has entered the fray with its freshly-minted F-Pace. And they haven’t just joined the SUV club but set some new rules for it.

The F-Pace is dynamic, beautiful and plush. Not always what we’ve come to expect from an SUV, but definitely what we’ve come to expect from a Jag. This different Jag has been cleverly positioned in terms of size and price; brilliantly conceived in terms of design and functionality, and sweetly formed in its desirability and brand appeal. Considering it’s Jaguar’s first foray into the SUV market, the F-Pace is stunningly good. It’s a match for any in this league and brings features not previously seen in this type of car. Like the little side-steps that automatically emerge from beneath the car when you’re trying to climb in and out – and then just as cleverly retract again once you’ve finished using them. Or the ingenious Activity Key - a rubberised wrist band similar to a FitBit – that can be worn when you’re surfing, swimming, cycling, running or doing any of those outdoorsy things that SUV owners are supposed to do. It allows the user to leave their bulky Jaguar key inside the car – instead locking and unlocking the F-Pace via transponders in the band which are detected by sensors in the car’s rear hatch. It’s pretty thoughtful stuff – and a big improvement on the one-time surf trick of Continued over>

Jaguar’s claim that the F-Pace is “more Jag than SUV” is underpinned, literally, by the architecture beneath that slinky exterior. Most of the F-Pace’s running gear has been evolved from the highly successful XF sedan. And just as the XF is one of the better riding and handling machines on the market, so goes the F-Pace – albeit on a slightly more elevated level. That’s elevated in terms of distance above the ground. Jag claims much of the F-Pace design is inspired by the F-type two-seater – but there’s plenty more Jaguar DNA as well. The company’s commitment to aluminium construction is evident, with 80 percent of the F-Pace using the lightweight metal. As a result, its surprisingly low kerb weight of about 1700 kilograms in turn delivers that nimble handling and impressive fuel-efficiency. We tested the mid-range version of the F-Pace – the R-Sport model with 3-litre V6 turbo-diesel and an asking price of $90,304. That gets you 221kW of power, a thundering 700Nm or torque and eight-speed auto, driven through all four wheels. The F-Pace range starts with a smaller (but lighter) 2-litre turbo-diesel from

$74,340 – right up to the racy supercharged petrol V6 F-Pace S topping $120k. For the first year, Jag will offer a First Edition variant that brings additional equipment to the flagship models. The list of features is long and lavish, particularly in higher-spec variants. Interior highlights include a 10.2-inch colour touch screen which runs the InControl Touch Pro system. The instrument panel is virtual and configurable, supplemented by a useful head-up display of speed and turn-by-turn navigation instructions. The cockpit wants for nothing and will feel familiar to those who have sampled the XF, with its elegant, sweeping dashline and signature rotary gear change dial.

Technology abounds. A stereo camera not only drives the adaptive cruise control and autonomous braking function, but also the lane departure and lane-keeping systems, intelligent speed limiter and pedestrian detection functions. Luxury features include heated and electrically reclining rear seats in the Portfolio models. There are four engine choices – the two diesels plus two versions of the petrol V6 (250kW and 280kW) plus four trim levels ranging from Prestige to R-Sport, Portfolio and First Edition. At every step point the Jag represents strong value. While it’s comparable in size to the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE (formerly the ML), it’s priced more closely to their little-brother mid-sized models like the X3 Beemer and GLC Benz. Dynamically, the F-Pace is a stand-out. The 3-litre diesel is a cracker with a huge reserve of low-down grunt and impressively smooth and quiet operation. Coupled with a beautifully mated eight-speed automatic, it will reach the speed limit in a touch over six

seconds, while delivering average fuel consumption of 6L/100km. That’s an extraordinary combination. Would I buy one? Well, put it this way. A mate of mine happens to be in the enviable position of shopping for a highend luxury SUV for his wife. Lucky him. My advice to him? Buy the Jag.

JAGUAR F-PACE 3.0 R-SPORT HOW BIG? It sits somewhere between full-sized rivals like the BMW X5 and its smaller-brother X3. But with room for five adults, 508 litres of cargo space (and enough width to lie golf clubs crossways), it’s amply-sized.

HOW FAST? The entry-level 2.0-litre diesel is the least powerful. Go for the bigger diesel or either of the petrol engines and you’re getting a very smart performer indeed. The quickest model will reach the speed limit in just over five seconds.

HOW THIRSTY? Again, that depends on your engine choice. The base model gets an impressive 5.3L/100km. We were more impressed by the 6L/100km thirst of our 3-litre, high-performance diesel test car.

HOW MUCH? Prices start in the mid-$70s, with flagship models costing almost twice that much.

MAKING SURE THE PRICE IS RIGHT As demand for Sunshine Coast properties grows, you might decide now is the right time to sell your home or unit. But where do you start when it comes to finding the right price to sell at? Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane talks to industry experts to find out in part three of a five-week series.

hen it comes to setting a price for the sale of your property, a number of factors come into play. The number of similar homes on the market, the price similar properties have sold for in your area and the demand for the style of house or lifestyle that your property affords are all critical aspects. So too, is the seller’s emotional connection to their beloved property, which may cause them to view it through rose-coloured glasses. This is where a real estate agent can provide you with the facts and figures, including the latest sales figures for homes nearby, to help you take a more realistic view of your castle. Real Estate Industry Queensland Sunshine Coast Zone Chair Amber Werchon says the property market is a delicate balancing act between the seller, who wants the best possible price for their property, and the buyer, who wants to pay the least amount possible.

“This is where the value of a good agent comes in. A good negotiator can help identify whether the buyer is in a position to move on price or conditions if necessary,” she says. “It’s important for an agent to treat every buyer like they are ‘the buyer’. The ability to represent the value of a home or location, including using thorough knowledge, to a buyer is a necessary skill for obtaining optimum price.” But time can often be a factor for some sellers, who may wish to relocate quickly. “For some sellers, it may be a case of getting the best price at a certain point in time. In some cases, this may mean losing any preconceptions of what they initially thought that they were going to achieve,” Werchon says. “Others may even wait until the market is better. “It really depends on the individual situation and objectives for selling. A good agent will be working with sellers to achieve the best outcome for them.” Setting the right price on a home can be a challenging process for both real estate agents and the sellers they are representing. For homeowners, their property represents memories and the blood, sweat and tears that may have been poured into renovations or landscaping to improve the look and feel of the home. Although they may achieve the goal of impressing homebuyers, investments may not translate dollar for dollar into a price rise for the property, and sellers who set the price too high can seriously damage their prospects for a quick sale. REIQ spokeswoman Felicity Moore says it is actually the buyer who will ultimately determine what your property is really worth. “They have hunted the open-home trail for months, researched their preferred

suburbs and compared homes upon homes,” she says. “An overpriced property not only discourages serious buyers, but when it remains on the market too long, it redirects interest to more realistically priced properties.” Sellers can request an appraisal from an agent, which Moore says will be provided at no charge. The agent will provide a comparative market analysis, which looks at three

properties of similar standard and style sold within a five-kilometre radius in the past six months. If they are unable to supply this due to lack of sales, they must supply a written statement outlining how they arrived at the suggested market price of your home. From that, sellers can begin to set a realistic price for their home. Next Property Group agent Karen Jones says there are plenty of buyers in the

market and there is demand to transact now, but sellers needed to take the time to tap into the knowledge of experienced professionals who can negotiate the best outcome for them. “You only get to sell your property once and all sellers want to know that they have achieved the best price possible at that point in time,” she says. Define Property principal Ross Cattle agrees and says there is a consistent stream of buyers “ready to pay that premium price”. “Its very critical who you choose to sell your home – you’re better off choosing an agent with a proven track record rather than the new kid on the block offering a discounted commission,” he says. “What you might see as a discount may end up being a costly mistake as they may not have the experience needed to create steady competition for your home, which will ultimately get you the best price. “Talk to your agent and ask for testimonials. The most important part of selling is having the right representative ensuring you get the price right and don’t undersell.”

CREATING COMPETITION Most home purchasers begin their search in publications like My Weekly Preview, so this is the first area where your home must stand out and be a cut above the rest. The REIQ suggests investing in the best when it comes to photography and marketing to make sure the words and photos are of the highest quality. Neither of these are a huge expense, but this simple investment at the beginning will pay dividends at the end, with more potential buyers being attracted to your property. After all, the more potential buyers you attract, the more competition that will be created. This can subsequently result in a favourable sale price for the seller.

ore than 150 people attended the event at the Maroochy Surf Club and Next Property Group marketing officer Alivia Prattas says there is every indication they will exceed their $60,000 fundraising goal, with all money being donated to Bloomhill Cancer Care. “What wasn’t donated or sponsored by the community, we donated as a company, so the profit that comes out of it goes straight to Bloomhill,” she says. The Sunshine Coast-based charity is close to the heart of Next Property Group owner and founder Loren Wimhurst, who is a two-time cancer survivor. With the inaugural event raising more than $40,000, this year’s event was poised to be bigger and better right from the start, as swimming legend Raelene Boyle kicked off the event and body language guru Allan Pease shared some insights. While Jason Daniels entertained the crowd with live music, auctioneer David Holmes took charge of the business end of the evening and Prattas says many items were selling above their value. “We had such an outpouring of love and support as everyone knew the money was going to a good cause,” she says. “One woman spent $8000 on items and then donated about $4500 items back to Bloomhill, which is so generous. Another private individual has come forward and donated $7400 since the evening.”

Loren Wimhurst and Raelene Boyle NY2K chose not to put a reserve price on the stunning diamond, which owner Paul New says they donated to add something special to the event. “Loren has been a customer of ours and we wanted to do something a bit different to a piece of jewellery or a white diamond, so we thought a pink diamond would be more fitting for a cancer fundraiser,” he says. “We are a stockist of pink Argyle diamonds and they can be 30 to 40 times the cost of a white diamond because they are rare.” New says they have supported Sunshine Coast charities in the past and looked forward to being a part of the Next Property Group Charity Auction in the future.

INDUSTRY NEWS Stockland’s Brightwater community at Mountain Creek has been named Queensland’s best masterplanned community in the 2016 Queensland UDIA Awards for Excellence. The 1500-lot community launched in 2008 and reached completion this year Stockland’s Sunshine Coast regional manager Ben Simpson says innovation has been a hallmark of Brightwater since well before the first home was built and the community’s first residents moved in. He says a relocation of high value heathland from the site to a new reserve at the University of the Sunshine Coast has been one of the largest environmental initiatives of its type ever undertaken in the southern hemisphere. “We followed this up with the on-site the preservation of more than 48 hectares of bushland and pockets of threatened species rehabilitation. “The construction of Brightwater’s signature 12-hectare lake was another substantial feat of planning, design and engineering – creating both a recreational centrepiece for the community and has now been integrated as a key component in its stormwater management system.” Recent additions to Brightwater have included a boat ramp, new parks and a half-court basketball court.

As for you? I’m going to be honest – not that great. Maybe early next week you might get a few but let’s be honest, it’s going to be ordinary. Well, that is what we will all be saying on the boat trip, while drinking Bintangs after surfing all day. Met some surfing royalty on the weekend – Mr Tom Carroll was lurking around with a few crew. ESTUARY: Quality whiting taking yabbies opposite the Bli Bli banks on the rising tide with the bigger tides this week suiting better. Trevally and flathead on plastics at the mouths of Petrie and Eudlo creeks. Mangrove jack are starting to show up in numbers with the steamy weather. Mud crabs are on the move down the Maroochy River. SURF: Bream at Mudjimba on the night high tide using mullet fillet and flathead in the low tide gutters during the day. Whiting along Maroochy Beach with pippies best the best bait. Tailor are at Pincushion with the better quality just after dark using WA pillies on ganged hooks. OFFSHORE: Spanish mackerel are due to make an appearance with the warmer water temperatures and will be best caught on trolled lures near the Gneerings in the early morning. Most reef areas are returning squire, sweetlip and parrot with jigging plastic baits returning the bigger fish. Micro jigs are worth a try for something different. FRESHWATER: One of the best starts to the bass season with lures trolled along the weed line in almost any impoundment returning fish. Somerset also has golden and silver perch with baits and lures working, but varies with each location.

HOW TO RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN Don’t want to become set in your ways? Try brushing your teeth left-handed, writes Richard O’Leary.

o I’ve started brushing my teeth left-handed, which goes against four decades of experience as I’m naturally a ‘rightie’. There is method in my madness. My intentional cack-handedness is a one-man trial of a theory which was posited to me, and a roomful of others, by Todd Sampson. You know the guy – good looking, cool but not in a try-hard way, consistently named in the lists of top 10 innovators and creative thinkers. And he’s on TV. I know, I hated him too, just on principle. But I have to say, during his hour-long presentation at a recent business event his smarts, success and total lack of smarminess won me over. But it was his insights into the human brain that really impressed me (apparently he hosted a really successful documentary series called Redesign My Brain – something I can add to the rapidly growing blind spot I have developed since restricting my TV

viewing to family movie nights each Friday). Which brings me back to brushing my teeth left-handed. According to Todd (or the doctors and scientists he was quoting) the secret to maintaining your memory and other brain functions – and even improving them – is forced adaptation. Apparently, once you’re over 40, your brain doesn’t make as many new neural pathways as it used to. Instead it makes the existing ones thicker and more rigid, which is one of the reasons we become set in our ways. The solution is to challenge your brain with new activities. The example he gave was the mountain climb he undertook as part of his abovementioned TV show, where he scaled a cliff face in Utah – blindfolded. The six-hour ordeal heightened his sense of smell, touch, and hearing, which helped him to overcome the handicap of not being able to see.

But forced adaptation does not have to be so extreme. You can learn a language or a musical instrument. Still too much effort? You can drive home a different way each day. I walk my dog Truman every night after the boys go to bed. Until this week I have always, more or less, followed the same route. But since Todd’s speech I have mixed it up to test out his theory. I don’t know if it’s changed my brain, but my nights have now become little excursions of discovery; the hubbub of homeless people, the crackle of road workers’ walkie-talkies, and the foreboding sound of sirens. Don’t have a dog? Try brushing your teeth left-handed (if you are a ‘rightie’). If the experts are correct, you will rewire your brain in just eight weeks and will become just as proficient with your unnatural hand.
