ullying in Australian schools is a serious problem. Research commissioned by the Federal Government shows that around one in four students report being bullied. The Centre of Adolescent Health states that these kids are three times more likely to show depressive symptoms and some studies indicate young victims are up to nine times more likely to have suicidal thoughts. These are disquieting statistics. Bullying is not new, but the rise of social media has created a new method – cyberbullying affects at least one in 10 students, and this figure is on the rise. Being an adolescent is not easy. My own teen years were lived without the added pressures of social media and texting – a time I wouldn’t trade with today. I believe that bullying should not be an acceptable part of ‘growing up’. We need to teach our kids the importance of self-respect and respect for others. This week, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw investigates this issue and speaks with self-esteem champion Marina Passalaris about the importance of empowering young girls. Also in the magazine, Roxanne McCartyO’Kane explores the Coast’s property growth.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I was privileged to be given an opportunity at the University of the Sunshine Coast to work on extending simulation learning opportunities for students. USC has a commitment to quality education that makes a difference to individuals and the greater community. It is quickly becoming recognised as a leader in simulation and the resources available are world class. The concept of engagement in authentic learning experiences provides the philosophical foundation for my teaching practice. I believe that exceptional teaching ignites desires, empowers and facilitates personal growth. My aim as a teacher is to capture students’ attention, create safe, active and collaborative learning environments to engage them in self-directed learning, and ignite a passion for lifelong learning. Simulation is a teaching approach that engenders a high level of engagement and provides students with close to real life experiences, helping them to translate theoretical concepts in practice and prepare for careers. In my position as Academic Director Simulation and Visualisation in the Faculty of Health, Education and Engineering I am able to work with staff to facilitate this.
Game-based simulation applications. I have been working with a team of academic staff, industry and developers to produce games that simulate real world situations and engage players in activities that require critical thinking to apply theoretical knowledge and develop confidence and competence. The USC Safe Environment apps teach aspiring nurses and health workers how to detect and manage environmental hazards in the homes or care settings of seniors and people with physical and mental health issues. The USC hazards app was a finalist in the Australasian Simulation Congress Serious Games showcase held in Melbourne this month. There has since been a great deal of interest in this nationally and internationally. With application across a wide range of degrees at USC and in the community (including health workers, family and clients), it is hoped that education arising from using this form of interactive media will provide new and engaging ways of learning and have a positive impact on the health and welfare of the community.

A senior nurse marched me down to see the matron and told her I was off the roster and would be reporting to the school of nursing the following Monday to start the Registered Nurse program. I was too scared to say no and so very lucky that someone identified my potential and put me on a career development path that has provided amazing opportunities to help others and fulfil my personal and professional dreams.

TEACHING TEEN GIRLS TO SOAR Marina Passalaris started her self-empowerment program for teenage girls on the Sunshine Coast – and now she’s going global. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

t the tender age of 11, Paige Gardner was having a rough time. She was copping daily bullying from girls at school and when she went home, the bullies continued to wrap their toxic tentacles around her through social media. It felt like there was no reprieve. “It wasn’t physical bullying but just the words they used,” says the Caloundra student. “They would always gang up on me, say mean things about my body and about me. I was quite upset at how these girls were treating me; they were stepping all over me and I didn’t know how to react. When they text you something mean, you just can’t ignore it.” Paige’s parents Michelle and Greg were concerned enough to send her on a three-day Beautiful Minds course in Maroochydore. Founded by Marina Passalaris on the Sunshine Coast in 2007, the self-empowerment and etiquette courses give girls aged 11 to 17 tools to help navigate the tumultuous years of adolescence. Word has spread and Beautiful Minds now runs programs nationally and overseas. Michelle and Greg sent their eldest daughter Saffron to a week-long Beautiful Minds course in Maroochydore four years ago at the age of 12 and now at 16, she’s a confident and happy teenager. Both girls say

the course changed their lives. “I feel a lot more confident now,” says Paige. “Marina told me to just let it go. To confront the bullies, but in a natural way, not in a rude way. She helped me to learn how to just ignore it and walk away, but also how to not put up with it. Marina told the girls if we’re being bullied on social media to just delete it. I deleted all my social media and ignored everyone, but now I have it back, but
cooking, fashion, makeup and did some yoga classes. Marina told us information we’ll never forget in our lifetime – she understood our girl problems.” Saffron says she loved the fun side of the course – like getting her makeup done and having professional photo shoots. But it’s the serious side of what she learnt that has stuck with her. “I guess at the time I was having a lot of

my parents closely monitor it and I don’t engage in what’s happening as much and when I do, I don’t let it affect me like it did. “It was a really fun course. I was a bit nervous at first, but it was a really safe environment to be in. You could speak about any problems you had and the other girls understood you weren’t there to be judged, you were there to be open. We learnt about
self-doubt with the way I looked and what people thought about me. Most of the girls there had a lot of self-doubt and cared a lot about what people thought. Marina reassured us all that whatever we look like, skinny, fat, it’s just ourselves. Everyone’s beautiful no matter what they look like. One girl told us how she cared so much about what people thought, she literally changed everything
about herself and it still wasn’t good enough.” According to beyondblue, the top three issues of concern for young people in 2015 were coping with stress, school or study problems and body image, and this has not changed since 2013. Half of all lifetime cases of mental health disorders start by age 14, and one in six young Australians is currently experiencing an anxiety condition. Perhaps most shockingly, suicide is the biggest killer of our youth, according to research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In 2015, it was the leading cause of death of children between five and 17 years of age. “When I did the course, we had a lesson about suicide and a lady came in and told us her story and it really just opened our eyes,” says Saffron. “The stuff she had been through when she was 14 or 15 was horrible. She was in her mid-20s and told us she had thought about suicide and was scared to say something, but her parents and friends helped. She told us it’s not the only choice.” “Schools are scared to address it,” says Marina. “Our current education is not working, we need an overhaul. It’s not the teachers, they’re incredible. We need to look at changing the curriculum so it sets them up for life. There’s no point leaving Year 12 and knowing how to dissect a frog and not knowing how to read a bank statement or not myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY knowing anything about yourself.” While Saffron says she’s only experienced mild bullying, she knows what it’s like to want to shut down and shut people out. “When people say things about you, you really don’t want to tell anyone. But once you do, you feel so much better. When I was going to do the course, I did talk to a lot of my friends and they were just like, we don’t need it, we already know stuff. But I feel like everyone should do it, because you learn so many life lessons.” “The biggest thing right now is anxiety,” says Marina. “Currently with the new stats, the average eight-year-old girl experiences the same level of anxiety as a mental patient from the 1950s. It’s absolutely frightening. “It’s not just social anxiety, but young people suffering full-blown panic attacks and being medicated at the age of 12 and 13. We recently ran a program in Sydney and 90 per cent of the girls in the room were suffering from panic attacks on a regular basis. I put it down to the fact the girls are at the forefront of what’s happening in the world because of social media and there is an enormous amount of fear. You can say it’s far removed, but young people under the age of 18 can’t distance themselves from it. “The second biggest problem is their friendship groups. There’s a lot of bullying and breakdown of friendship groups at school. Girls are cruel to each other and it creates so much sadness and tension. The third is body image and how they see themselves and compare themselves to the images on social media. As much as they are very savvy and know the images are airbrushed and are so over talking about that topic, subconsciously it still seeps in.” Alexandra Headland nurse, Caroline Wallace, 22, did the program nine years ago. “We watched the videos of how the women on the front covers are manipulated,” says Caroline. “I was 13 and I’d been looking at magazines my entire life but I’d never once seen the video of what actually goes behind that one picture. I learnt not to try and look like the model on the cover of the magazine, because she doesn’t even look like that. It really put things into perspective. We were all
trying to strive for something that was completely unattainable. It was okay to be us with our little insignificant flaws we thought we had and go ahead with the things that made us happy.” Caroline’s parents sent her on the course hoping it would help with her anorexia, but it was too far advanced and she was admitted to hospital for seven months. “Unfortunately my anorexia was already

When I got admitted to hospital a couple of months after the course, my mum brought my photo in with my makeup done nicely and my portfolio from Beautiful Minds, which talked about getting from your head onto a piece of paper what makes you happy, good self-talk, the bullies from the outside and the bullies from within. Just having that support of a mentor was beyond helpful. “I had a particularly close relationship with Marina and she’s stayed in my life ever
since. I met her a decade ago and I’ve always known she would have my back, even now.” While Caroline and her sister Emma, who also did the course, loved the fun stuff like learning about hair and makeup, it was the more confronting parts of the course she has gained the most value from. “At one point we had to write down one thing we were self-conscious about. There were about seven girls and we all had to write something we were embarrassed about. It was really confronting at that age, to write it on a piece of paper and share it. Once we all shared, it was quite liberating.” Caroline’s mum Leonie says the diversity of life skills learnt made it money well spent. “As parents we can talk to our children about these things, but teenagers only listen to so much from their parents. They take it on board more when it comes from somebody else. Listening to Marina and the people she gets to come in has an impact on them.” Paige and Saffron’s mum Michelle agrees. “I would definitely recommend anybody putting their daughters through the course. It seems today that teenagers are looking for external validation, which social media perpetuates, for happiness and acceptance. What I love about Marina’s courses is that she is helping the girls to realise their own inner potential through loving and accepting themselves, and that this is what will lead to true happiness, not how many likes you get on a photo.” With Passalaris now educating 33,000 teens each year in NSW alone, she works non-stop, but says it’s not work, it’s a passion. “I would just love young girls to believe in themselves, to have much better friendships and relationships with each other, to support each other more and for young girls to just understand that life is really short. You’ve got to hit the ground running and do the best with what you have. Every single person out there has got something incredible to offer the community. That’s what they have to work out – what have they been put on this earth to do? If you approach life with an attitude of, how do I make the best of it and how do I give back, you find your passion and your life’s work and you become a happier person.”
SPREADING THE LOVE Originally from South Africa, Marina spent 14 years as a model and worked in South Africa and Europe before moving to Australia and spending 10 years on the Sunshine Coast, where she met young models who were experiencing difficulties in their personal lives. She developed her Beautiful Minds program in conjunction with experts from a variety of fields and ran them initially in Maroochydore, Noosa and Caloundra. “It was the perfect place to start a business like this, because the locals supported it,” says Marina. “I think if I had started it in a city I wouldn’t have been as successful. The Coast is home and it’s where it started and I love the fact that it’s gone from there to an international business.” While Marina still owns a home in Currimundi, she now lives in Sydney where her head office is based, and has 60 educators on board who run programs around Australia. The program has now run in Europe and is launching in Singapore in November. There are four arms of the business – a school program, signature weekend and school holiday courses, an online program called BU Online, which features celebrity videos and Be You Day, a one-day event which launched in Sydney three years ago and will go national in 2018. Marina has been inundated with requests to develop a program for boys and will trial a one-off event for boys next year.

Sunshine Coast residents successfully stopped 101,296 tonnes of rubbish from ending up in landfill in 2015/2016, recycling 39 per cent of all waste generated. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says many residents believe they are recycling right, but there are still a number of questions and a lot of confusion in the mix. RECORD NUMBERS JOIN WALK FOR DANIEL Record numbers of people around the country donned red T-shirts to remember Daniel Morcombe on November 28. More than 2470 schools across the country were involved in the 12th annual Walk for Daniel and thousands walked the four kilometres from the Suncoast Christian College to the Morcombe’s home in Palmwoods alongside his parents Bruce and Denise and the latest addition to the family, Winston. Bruce Morcombe says the 30 per cent increase in participants will ensure Daniel’s legacy continues to make a positive difference to the safety of Australian children.
IT’S OFFICIAL: OUR AIRPORT IS NOW INTERNATIONAL Sunshine Coast Airport has been officially designated as Australia’s newest international airport. The designation means annual approvals for Trans-Tasman services between Auckland and Sunshine Coast Airport are no longer needed and border agency resourcing for these flights are assured. Mayor Mark Jamieson says this is an important alignment of plans for the development of the airport, and a win for international visitation to the region. Direct Air New Zealand flights between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast have injected more than $150 million in economic benefit to the region in the past five years.

$5 BILLION BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED Sunshine Coast Arts Advisory Board member Tracey Vieira is the 2016 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year. THE ROAD TO HAPPINESS
Sami Muirhead says we could all do with a bit of ‘hygge’ in our lives – a Danish concept that has captured the world’s attention.
Fed up with the state of our roads? A visit to Vietnam will put things in perspective, writes Bill Darby.
T
here is a new buzzword in town that both intrigues me and also makes me want to slam my head into my crayon-scribble-covered loungeroom wall. It is hygge. It’s a Danish philosophy and it is pronounced ‘hoo-ga’. Say it with me: form your lips really tightly and say ‘hoo-ga’. Now we both practically speak fluent Danish. This language skill could come in handy when we are hanging out with Mary and Fred and deciding which tiara to wear. Oh hang on, that is my private fantasy I just shared with the world. Back to hygge. It is the new concept that is spreading rapidly after the world of interiors embraced it. It translates to ‘cosiness.’ It is a lit fireplace. It is a snuggly blanket on a couch. It is also making the time to live in the moment and enjoy a sunset picnic. It supposedly makes your home nicer and makes you happier. To slobs like me who live in a cyclone of stress, it seems a pretty seductive concept. It also seems a fairly impossible goal to achieve. But there is a flicker of hope in me that imagines a clean house and actually enjoying a cup of tea guilt-free and just sitting and being in the moment. There are no less than nine new books being published about hygge.
No one gives good hygge like the perfect Danes. Living seemingly perfect lives is their superpower. Damn them and their incredible good looks and wealth and ability to speak 30,878 languages. Danish people are often number one on the lists of the happiest nations in the world. No wonder, if they are smugly lying under their cashmere blankets taking in the glow of candlelight and stuffing their faces with Danish pastries washed down with Carlsberg beer. Okay, that’s a stereotype, but you get the drift. I do find it interesting that hygge reflects our hunger for anything home-related and our craving to live in the moment. We are busier than ever and live on social media. I have been really stressed lately about my messy house. It is out of control. Every room seems to have mountains of toys or clothing or just bits and pieces that need sorting out. It is robbing me of spending quality time with my kids. So maybe I need to hug the hygge and sort out my messed up zones once and for all. I am not quite sure how to do this so instead I may just pour a wine and light my Ikea vanilla-scented candle and for a few hours forget about my squalor and dream of cycling around the Danish canals with Mez and Freddo. hile recently holidaying in Vietnam, one experience I will never forget is negotiating Hanoi’s mad peak hour traffic. We were on motorbikes and without the protection of a car’s metal chassis, avoiding buses, trucks and six million scooters became intensely relevant if we were to preserve our comparably insignificant lives. Upon tackling the seething roads of this heavily populated city, one wonders how everyone manages to get around without being in a state of constant stress and mayhem. There are hardly any traffic signals and seemingly no rules. Amid a landscape of poverty, pollution and congestion these people smile. They are happy and for them, life just goes on. It got me thinking about our attitude to traffic here on the Sunshine Coast. In contrast to Vietnam, we have a relatively low population, our vehicles are modern and our roads are well maintained. All this being said, we still manage to be largely dissatisfied with the capacity of our road network. We get impatient, we get stressed and sometimes we get angry that traffic congestion interferes with our daily schedule. And heaven forbid if someone cuts us off, that’s when some of us really fire up. We have so much and yet we complain. In my musings, I’ve been looking for the justification as to why our discontent with all things traffic defines us. Why do we
complain endlessly about the lack of road infrastructure? My first conclusion is to blame the government. There’s not enough money being spent on roads, we’ve got too many traffic lights and damn it, Australia is one big nanny state with too many rules. The truth of the matter is of course quite different. We Aussies are spoilt and we don’t even realise it. Considering the size of our continent, the roads we have in this country

Vietnam has a population four times the size of Australia but their road toll is an estimated 16 times higher. Perhaps this is food for thought next time we find ourselves stuck at the lights. reat things can be accomplished over a couple of beers. When Mark Skinner dropped into 10 Toes Brewery for a cold one recently, he got chatting with owner, Rupert Hall. Skinner told Hall about his charity event, The Board Meeting, which is held every November on the Coast to raise money for children living with disabilities. Before the glass was empty, Hall had agreed to donate a keg of craft beer and had also entered a team from the brewery. “We’ve always had a desire to support local charities,” says Hall. “We have a monthly karma keg – the idea is once a month we will donate a keg of beer to a local charity. If they’re holding an event, they can serve the beer and all proceeds will go to the charity.” Hall has been an all-grain brewer for 12 years and in February, took the leap into opening his own craft brewery at Alexandra Headland. “I started off doing home brew and that’s grown into an obsession,” he says. “It’s been a dream for a long time to open our own brewery.” Hall is a mechanical engineer and worked all over Australia and for four years in a gold mine in Papua New Guinea as a FIFO worker. When gold prices went down, he was made redundant and with his wife, took the opportunity to realise his dream. “We’ve had really positive feedback and we’ve got 15 bars on the Sunshine Coast with our beer on tap,” he says. “We’ve been doing it ourselves seven days a week – we’ve only had six days off in the last 12 months. “I love craft beer, the diversity of flavours and the creative side. It’s an amazing industry which has been booming worldwide for 20 to 30 years. Just in the last five or six years it’s been moving up to the Coast from Brisbane and is just on the verge of taking off.” myweeklypreview.com.au

With the business doing well, Hall says it’s important to give back to the local community. “Supporting local is what the micro brewing movement is all about – drink local, support local. There’s also the opportunity to give back to the youth and disadvantaged on the Coast – there’s a moral responsibility to be part of that. To that end, Hall is planning to enter a team from 10 Toes Brewery into The Board Meeting event. “I’ll be there to make a fool of myself,” he laughs. “I really enjoy my surfing but I’m still fairly new, I’ve only been surfing for a few years. We’ll go in there and have a bit of fun – two of our team members are coming on board.” Board Meeting organiser Mark Skinner says it’s encouraging to see new supporters. “You probably have 20 regular teams every year, but it’s great when you get a new supporter who’s quite passionate about it from the start. “That’s sort of representative of the level of people we get, they don’t just say, here’s my team money I’ll have a surf and come along. Everybody wants to do that bit extra to make sure we raise quality funds.” Skinner says 32 teams have signed on for The Board Meeting and there are four team spots still available. “If there are any businesses out there with surfers on the management or staff who would like to come along and represent their business and do the right thing for disabled kids in the Sunshine Coast community, it’s a great way to do it. It’s a genuinely great day with more emphasis on fun than competitive surfing. It’s a great vibe and people really do enjoy being there.” The Board Meeting will be held on November 12.

he US presidential election is upon us. Surprisingly, the candidates do have some similar policies, which if enacted, would favour infrastructure spending, but put downward pressure on pharmaceutical and oil prices. Furthermore they would increase barriers to free trade and add to public debt. The structure of Congress could be problematic. If predictions are correct, the Democrats will gain control of the Senate while the Republicans will control the House of Representatives, resulting in political gridlock, such that proposals outlined will be difficult to enact. At the least lengthy debates and significant compromises are likely. Still, a gridlock scenario has some benefits, ensuring sufficient checks and balances in developing policy, and an expectation of the status quo continuing, which should keep markets settled. Regardless of who wins, the next president enters office with national debt at its highest levels since World War II, and the policies pursued are likely to increase debt in the future. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that under existing laws, public debt will increase by US$9 trillion to US$23.1 trillion by the end of FY2026. Trump’s proposals would add an additional US$5.3 trillion to that estimate while Clinton’s proposals would add US$200 billion. At first glance, Trump’s policies appear more stimulatory, due to tax cuts for low income earners, a pledge to outspend Clinton on infrastructure, and fostering local industries (like energy). However, this may lead to higher debt, with limited detail on
how the measures will be funded, other than to cut non-defence spending by 1 per cent per year. These initiatives themselves may be undone by his more extreme stance on foreign trade. In some press interviews, Trump has suggested a 45 per cent tariff on Chinese imports. A backlash by trade partners, particularly China, would be negative for US exports and growth. Broadly speaking, Trump’s policies create more uncertainty for markets, and could escalate trade tensions. Australia will likely suffer given prospects of more punitive trade terms on key trading partners like China, leading to AUD weakness versus the USD. Clinton’s platform is perceived as being more specific and balanced in approach, and less inflammatory. Her plan is more focused on spending on a range of initiatives (infrastructure, alleviating student debt, enhancing paid family leave), and funding these by raising taxes on the wealthy. There is also a higher degree of policy continuity, while trade agreements will be re-assessed. A Clinton win would be associated with more certainty and therefore likely to be better received by equity markets. It should also create less instabilities for global growth, and therefore pave the way for the Federal Reserve to raise rates in December. THE MAKING OF A TOURIST MECCA
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY
The Sunshine Coast was busy building its name as a tourist destination during the 1970s, a time when bigger was better, writes Dot Whittington.

M
omentum had been building since the Sunshine Coast became an official destination in 1967, with various tourism delegations heading to Sydney and Melbourne extolling its virtues to travel agents, radio and television in a bid to tap into the southern market. There was a rivalry with the Gold Coast on the opposite side of Brisbane, which had already established itself as a glitzy coastal holiday destination. The difference, the Sunshine Coasters said, was while its southern cousin relied on its sophisticated image of high-rise towers and built attractions, they had natural beauty and family-friendly character. Nevertheless, there were clear opportunities to provide some man-made tourist attractions. The House of Bottles with a giant stubby out the front made from 35,000 beer bottles,
had opened in Tewantin in 1966 as Queensland’s first “big” attraction. It included a museum of 5000 bottles and a history of bottles. The Big Shell, originally built as a focal point for a coloured sands museum in Tewantin, also opened in the 1960s with a six metre concrete baler shell at its entrance. The biggest of the big though, was the Big Pineapple, which Bill and Lyn Taylor opened on the Bruce Highway at Woombye in 1971. Tourists came from miles around and the site soon became Australia’s most visited attraction. Visitors could climb the steps inside the 16 metre high fibreglass pineapple to a little balcony or ride a train around the attached pineapple plantation. Five years later, in 1976, Des and Barbara Scanlon opened the Big Cow, on the Bruce Highway at Kulangoor, north
of Nambour. It was a 10.8 metre long and 7.9 metre tall Ayrshire, a nod to the dairy industry. Trips around the farm were in trolleys hauled by a tractor with a horn that sounded moo. Times changed for both attractions when the Nambour bypass road opened, effectively cutting them off from the Bruce Highway to Brisbane. In 1973, Nambour pharmacist Ian Hayne and his wife Marcia, opened the Fairytale Castle on the coastal road at Bli Bli. Nostalgia Town on the David Low Way at Pacific Paradise had the theme A Laugh at the Past, train ride and mini-golf while the Super Bee at Tanawha focused on honey. There was also, briefly, a dinosaur park at Tanawha. Rounding off the big attractions was a Big Mower at Beerwah and a big strawberry at Doonan.
Late in the evening of Thursday, November 5, 1970, a primitive little raft with four men in tattered clothes and a cat named Minette, arrived at Mooloolaba Harbour. Alsar Vitale, Gabriel Salas, Marc Modena and Norman Tetreault had drifted 11,000 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean from Ecuador to prove a centuries-old theory that South Americans could have migrated to Australia. It was the biggest tourism bonanza in Sunshine Coast history as media around the nation and the world shouted about Mooloolaba, until then little more than a dot on a map of the southern Queensland coast.

By 1991, it was 28,509. • Caloundra City population grew from 8319 in 1961; to 11,314 in 1971 and 29,705 in 1981. By 1991, it was 53,434. • At the start of the decade, a land buying stampede near Noosa Junction netted Noosa Shire Council $550,000 “and amazed real estate agents” for 16 building blocks of between 600 and 700 square metres at auction. The proceeds were used to offset costs for the new council offices in Tewantin.

TAKE A BITE OUT OF ADELAIDE Now it’s easy for Sunny Coasters to nip down to Adelaide for a food and wine weekend. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

ellowing laughter, acoustic guitar and animated chatter swirl around us as we feast on fat pizza and fresh pasta at the Adelaide Central Market, buzzing on a busy Friday afternoon. We’ve arrived in Adelaide on one of Jetstar’s new direct flights from the Sunshine Coast for a weekend food and wine tour and waste no time expanding our waistlines by diving headfirst into a decadent two days. We order lunch at the iconic Lucia’s Pizza & Spaghetti Bar. It was here, in 1957, that Lucia Rosella, the mother of current owners Nicci Bugeja and Maria Rosella, first served pizza in Adelaide. It’s a busy cafe and the food takes a while to come out, but we’re not in a hurry and chat over a drink as we soak up the vibrant market life. The Adelaide Central Market is the beating heart of the city and a foodie’s dream. Without a single fast food franchise in sight, colourful paper lanterns dangle brightly above the bustling market, which is all about
fresh produce – artisan cheeses, feather-light pavlovas and decadent pastries like those you’ll drool over at Poh Ling Yeow’s new project, the eclectic Jamface. We fill up on Lucia’s homecooked fare, but leave just enough room in our stomachs for Mark Gleeson’s famous Adelaide Central Market Tours, an institution after 15 years. Gleeson is a chef who’s owned Providore at Stall 66 for 30 years, one of the longest running stalls at the market. Gleeson and his team take up to 200 people a week in small groups of up to 10 on taste testing tours through the market – an absolute must if it’s your first visit. We begin at Gleeson’s stall, where he holds out a large slice of pavlova on a paper plate and we swoop in like seagulls with forks squawking, mine, mine, mine. “Let’s go!” he says, and zips off through the alleyways, dipping in and out of stalls and emerging with delicacies like silky prosciutto and fluffy Korean pancakes.
But market is not just about the food, it’s about the people. Gleeson knows all their stories, like Stefan Oulianoff, who has been in the same spot for 40 years and reckons his certified organic apples are the crispiest we’ll ever taste. To end the tour, Gleeson grabs some Langres cheese from the Smelly Cheese Shop before whisking us upstairs to his cooking school, where he pulls out a nicely chilled bottle of Croser bubbles from the freezer and waxes lyrical about the outer crustiness and inner silkiness of the cheese, as he explains what he loves about the market. “People have businesses here because they connect with people,” he says. “Being a shopkeeper is amazing, you have a relationship with these people for 30 years and you don’t even know their name. You give them a bit of cheek, have a joke and it’s just a great place to work. It’s reflected in the feel of the place.” Originally from Sydney, Gleeson has been
here long enough to have inherited the infectious passion for good food and wine that seems bred into the DNA of everyone you meet in Adelaide. Make sure you bring your stretchy pants, because just when you think you can’t eat or drink another thing, you’ll be met with looks of disappointment if you decline dessert. We’re met outside the market by the cheerful Toby from Eco Caddy. These nifty hybrid electric and pedal powered rickshaws take you anywhere in the CBD for $10 and are a fun way to get your bearings in the city. Toby likes a chat and gives us a running commentary as he cruises along the main arterial roads, up footpaths, past iconic buildings and landmarks and down back alleyways concealing groovy cafes and wine bars. He delivers us to the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel, which is well located near the shopping and entertainment hub of Rundle Street and boasts a fab rooftop bar with sweeping views of the city. Dinner that evening is at Blackwood Restaurant, which specialises in locally

Meet market: The Adelaide Central Market is a popular social hub sourced produce with native and wild ingredients foraged from the land. The paddock-to-plate focus is communicated through a wall decorated with arty photos of what you’re eating – a cow, a pig, potatoes in the earth, a handful of herbs – telling your eyes what your tastebuds already know: it’s seriously fresh food produced with love and care, paired with exceptional boutique wines. Day two begins with a tour of the famous Haigh’s Chocolate factory, where we learn every step in the process of chocolate making. Watching through a viewing window, we’re mesmerised by two ladies meticulously rolling each chocolate by hand like Oompa Loompas, and are given ample opportunity to sample the merchandise. The lady at the checkout tells us the staff members are allowed to eat as much chocolate as they like while they’re at work, just in case you’re pondering a career change. Our chauffeur for the day is the charismatic Ralf Hadzic, who runs Life is a Cabernet tours around Adelaide and into the hills. Hadzic was born in Adelaide but grew up in Ohio, then lived in Texas. After returning to Australia, he spent 10 years playing the big orange furry feline in the TV show Fat Cat and Friends. He has worked

in the entertainment industry in Australia and the United States for years and is a chauffeur with pizzazz, full of fascinating stories about everyone from Beyoncé and Jay Z to his good friend Julia Gillard. Hadzic delivers us from one chocolate heaven to another – from Haigh’s to the sublime ChocoVino experience at Hahndorf Hill Winery. Here, we are treated to worldclass chocolates delicately matched to Hahndorf Hill wines. The experience focuses more on quality than quantity, which is just as well because our next stop is a wine tasting followed by lunch at Pike & Joyce Wines. The rather handsome Craig Vanstone’s enthusiasm for the wine he pours us in the tasting room of Pike & Joyce is even more intoxicating than the wine itself. Very little is ending up in the spit bucket as we sip each new wine and cast our eyes through floor to ceiling windows, overlooking resplendent vineyards stretching off into the distance. Set high in the Adelaide Hills, 40 minutes from the CBD, the single estate winery is a partnership between two families – the Joyce family, fifth generation horticulturists and the Pike family, long established in winemaking and viticulture. Here at Lenswood, their 25 hectares of sloping land, 593 metres above
sea level, has been producing some of the finest cool climate wine grapes since they joined epicurean forces in 1998. We begin with a Method Cuvee Pinot Noir Rose, a light-bodied drop with fresh aromas of strawberry, cranberry and watermelon. Next up is a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, followed by a medium-bodied ‘Separe’ Gruner Veltiner with a bright palate and subtle pear scents, then we progress to a Pinot Gris with subtle notes of nashi pear, nectarine and musk. . . and the rest is a blur, but I know I enjoyed it. For lunch we feast on pan-seared fillet of ocean trout, white bean puree and preserved lemon with a shaved fennel, mint and pomegranate salad, paired with the 2015 ‘Separe’ Gruner Veltiner. We say no to dessert but are talked into “just a little try” of a lavish cheese plate and a plate of bite-size sweets. Bursting at the seams, we walk off the calories in the pretty village of Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, before Hadzic delivers us to The Crafers Hotel. Established in 1839, it’s one of Adelaide’s first pubs and offers stunning rooms upstairs that combine an oldeworlde elegance with contemporary style. Our last stop is dinner at Lost in a Forest, a groovy wood oven pizza and wine lounge housed in an atmospheric old chapel. These pizzas are the business – a far cry from ham and pineapple. We order the Bánh Mi with a bianco base, 12-hour cider braised pulled pork, trecce mozzarella, picked vegetables, coriander, parmesan, crackling and sriracha mayonnaise, and a fantastic mushroom pizza with a trio of mushrooms, blue cheese, truffle salt and fresh sage. Buonissima. Any story that starts and ends with pizza and is fleshed out with a central plotline of chocolate, wine and more chocolate is pretty good in my book. SAVOUR THE DELIGHTS Getting a taste of BMW’s legendary M-Sport high-performance brand just got a whole lot easier. By Peter Atkinson.
W
ant to save yourself a quick $60-grand? Take a look at this. It’s called the BMW M2. It’s fast, fun and rather fabulous. Best of all, it’s the cheapest way you’re ever going to get behind the wheel of a BMW M model – the Bavarian brand’s exclusive, high-performance stable. The M2 is the latest, smallest and easily most affordable member of this exclusive club. Until now, you faced a spend of at least
$150,000 to savour the delights of BMW’s most powerful, driver-focused machines. This one can be had for less than $90,000 thanks to a pared-back Pure version aimed at the pricetags of its arch-rivals. Based upon BMW’s new 2-Series coupe, it brings a 272 kilowatt, turbocharged sixcylinder engine to a car that, in normal guise, makes do with four cylinders and less than half as much power. But the M2 is much more than just a little
car with a big, powerful engine. The M2 does just about everything the mighty M3 sedan and M4 coupe will do, but wraps it into a smaller, more affordable package. Okay, at $89,900 plus onroads for the entry-level M2 Pure, it’s not exactly cheap for a two-door compact. But, does it go. The official numbers say its 272 kilowatts and 465Nm will hurl you toward the speed limit in 4.5 seconds – that’s for the six-speed manual version we tested – while the dual-clutch auto shaves a couple of tenths off that. The M3, by comparison, does the same journey in a blurry 4.1 seconds. But the M2 feels even faster than its raw numbers suggest. It launches with staggering urgency and keeps pulling furiously, forcing the big, fat rear tyres to struggle for grip – all the way to its electronically-governed 250km/h top speed. BMW offers a manual transmission and has managed to include a bit of tech magic. That comes in the form of an engagement speed control feature that automatically blips the throttle whenever you’re downshifting. Some hard-core drivers have criticised this as interfering with the purity of the drive. For mine, it’s brilliant – allowing you to brake, shift and accelerate seamlessly without the need to quickly shuffle your two feet between the three pedals. Both M2 variants are nicely equipped, as you might expect. The Pure gets climate
control air, active cruise control with city braking function, rear park assist plus reversing camera, digital audio, satellite navigation plus lane departure and collision avoidance warning systems. The full-fat version of the M2 – costing $98,900 plus onroads – adds an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system, adaptive headlights, keyless access and heated front sports seats. All that while you’re saving sixty grand. Now that’s a bargain.
BMW M2 PURE HOW BIG? Based on the compact 2-Series coupe – albeit with some increased dimensions to improve handling and performance – it’s a snug fit for two. There’s also good space in the boot.
HOW FAST? Impressively. While we drove the manual, the faster, more efficient and more convenient seven-speed dual-clutch auto is the pick with its 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.3 seconds.
HOW THIRSTY? With an auto stop-start function, energy regeneration system and fuel-saving features, it manages a 7.9L/100km average. HOW MUCH? The fully-equipped version barely scrapes under the $100k mark, while the Pure version – scaled back in price to compete with its German rivals – can be had for $89,900, plus onroad costs.

TOP 10 COAST SUBURBS FOR HOME SALES In part two of a series investigating Sunshine Coast property stock levels, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane looks into the impact of supply and demand and which suburbs are hot right now.

upply and demand is one of the big drivers in the property market. It can push property prices up as more people seek to buy in a particular area, or it can have the opposite effect as buyers turn their attention to other suburbs to look for a property that better meets their needs. My Property Preview has joined forces with realestate.com.au to find out where the most desirable suburbs were from September 1 to October 1 this year and compared that to last year, to see where the demand is greatest for Coast properties. An REA Group spokesperson says to determine whether a suburb is in higher demand than others, they look at the total number of visits to the suburb during the selected time period and divide that by the number of properties listed on realestate.com.au during that time. “In order for a suburb to make the list, there needed to be a minimum of 15
properties listed in the suburb on realestate.com.au during the time period,” the spokesperson says. The top three suburbs in demand for homebuyers last month were Mooloolaba, Coolum Beach and Noosa Heads, while Dicky Beach, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore topped the list for the same period in 2015. The Auction Group director Gordon Macdonald conducts on average 20 auctions per week and describes the current local market climate as “smart and sustainable”. “Traditionally we will follow the bigger marketplaces, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, but I think we have, in terms of capital growth, laid dormant for some time and now there is potential for some catch-up,” he says. Macdonald says at the end of October, registered bidders per auction rose from 1.7 to 2.5 and in the week of October 17, their properties sold an average of $19,000

in excess of the reserve. “That’s the first time that’s happened in a long time. Over the last couple of years, we have seen shifts on auction from anywhere between five to seven per cent less than the reserve price to achieve a sale, that was what we used to call the average shift to sell,” he says. “There are now two factors in play; there is a slight increase in demand at the moment and this is also a reflection on buyers having less choice, but the good properties really stand out and it’s not
uncommon to have between five and nine registered bidders at auction vying for quality stock.” Macdonald agrees Mooloolaba is a hot location at the moment. He auctioned a Mooloolaba property 12 months ago and it sold for $670,000 and it is back on the market with a $769,000 price tag. “Property options for buyers are limited, people who bought property in 2007–2008 have been challenged if they have been wanting to sell since, because the market hasn’t been there, until now,” he says.

SURF REPORT
So John John wins the world title. Great to see a Hawaiian back with a world title. Mr Slater has stated he is going to have a serious crack at a 12th world title at the age of 45. Anyone else and you would laugh, but with him it’s a whole new ball game and, if they have a year of big swells, I reckon he will go close. Monday looks good for waves as the weekend may be a little windy. The following week I am off to North Sumatra to chase the end of season swells. This time last year was perfection. At one stage I was getting backhand barrels on Asu by myself. Have fun peeps.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: A few sand crabs showing up in the deeper channel from the motorway bridge to Bli Bli. Flathead on the drift along Twin Waters shoreline casting lures and using live baits. Whiting taking yabbies off the banks at Goat and Channel Islands. SURF: Sea bream and a few tailor at Pincushion and along North Shore Maroochy with pillies and mullet fillet best baits. Sharks and jew at the Maroochy bar on big baits. Dart, whiting and tarwhine taking pippies and pilly fillet on early morning tides. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, rat kingies providing sport for fishers at The Blinker, trolling lures. Mixed reef fish at Murphy’s using squid on bottom rigs. Keep in mind this is a heavily fished area so patience and a good sounder are a necessity. Moses perch, underside red emperor and parrot at The Gneerings with squid and pillies working. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam returning some quality bass and golden perch on deep divers, plastics and live shrimps. Both Bjelke Petersen and Boondooma Dams working well for bass, golden and silver perch with great results in recent weeks. Borumba worth a visit for saratoga on fly and bass on trolled deep divers.

ne of the worst punishments you could be given at my school was ‘scab duty’ – picking up rubbish at lunchtime to make amends for one indiscretion or another. Now, I’m not going to debate the wisdom of shaming a student into good behaviour – as much as I am tempted to do so. But I would like to talk about the benefits of ‘doing the right thing’, as the anti-litter campaigns put it in the ‘80s. The subject came to me on a recent Saturday morning when my boys spotted a couple of beer bottles, a wine bottle and a newspaper under a bush in a park where they’d been playing. My eldest told me with the certainty that only an eight-year-old can muster that spies communicate with each other by leaving messages in bottles under bushes – and we needed to check

I actually found the habit quite endearing – I still do. Hopefully, when people saw her, they too would decide that a community can be made better one empty iced coffee container at time. In the years since, I have followed her lead and find it difficult to walk past rubbish without scooping it up and putting it in the nearest bin. It lifts my spirits and is so much more effective than complaining about other people’s bad habits. So these days I’m happy to volunteer for ‘scab duty’ and who knows – maybe one day I’ll find a secret message from a spy.
