have been lucky enough to call the Sunshine Coast home for the past 12 years. There are many wonderful things that make the Coast the celebrated region it is, from beautiful beaches to the stunning hinterland, right through to innovative industry and business. And yet, in my eyes, it is the sense of community that makes our little place on Earth so special. The My Weekly Preview team has decided to kick-start summer a little earlier this year and share all the reasons we love celebrating this season on the Coast. It got me thinking while on my early morning walk, and I realised it’s the simple things I love. I look forward to seeing the regular faces on my path – the lovely lady walking her dog and the two elderly men who wave enthusiastically and call out hello. These are the people who make up our community, the people I wish to connect with in my role as editor of this magazine. Life is all about connections – those special shared moments, no matter how brief, shape who we are not only as individuals, but as a region. HAT TRICKS Buderim’s Sandy Aslett is one of Australia’s leading milliners and is making 80 pieces of headwear for the Spring Racing Carnival. YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
FIRST JOB?
Not realising my millinery talents earlier in life. I only started my millinery eight years ago. I’ve always wanted to do millinery because I’ve always had a small head and couldn’t find anything. I had a milliner make a hat for me. I’ve always been good at fashion, always been good at sport, whatever I challenge myself at I end up being okay with. When I first started out, I’d bring tutors – international and Australian milliners – here to teach at my studio. I had a really great opportunity to help Neil Grigg in Sydney – that was great work experience. I find it difficult to break into the Melbourne market but I’ve done really well this year. I spent nearly all of September down in Melbourne and Sydney. I’m grounded in my studio preparing for Derby Day, Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup, Crown Oaks Day in Melbourne. I’m making 80 pieces for clients all over Australia. My hats go to Darwin, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne. It’s a lot of hard work. I’ve not been sitting on my butt and not marketing, I’ve been out there promoting my label, the invitations come hard and fast now.
I left school at age 15 and could not wait to join the workforce. I was lucky enough to gain a position in office administration at the local Datsun dealership in Bundaberg.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? At this time of year I am inundated with millinery orders for the Spring Racing Carnival. Loving all the latest trends in fashion that my clients bring to me for designer headwear to complete their total look.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… My husband Jeff and Maltese/Shitzu Max, who actually runs the house (don’t tell Jeff).
FIRST CAR? A second-hand 1960s vintage VW beetle that was of course called Herbie and was often crashed by my younger sister.
FAVOURITE BOOK? Bob Ansett’s An Autobiography, signed by Bob when I worked for him at Budget Rent A Car, he is a very inspirational person.

FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST? You would have to travel far and wide to surpass Mooloolaba Beach early morning or late afternoon.

I also played hockey for Queensland for 13 years and was picked as a shadow player for Australia. Summer starts early here on the Sunny Coast, so it’s time to get out and make the most of living in paradise. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

un, surf and sand. When it comes to summer living it doesn’t get much better than that. Unless, of course, you are one of the lucky 288,000 people who call the Sunshine Coast home. Although our beaches are celebrated the world over, there is so much more that makes this region wonderful. With the weather warming up and the fun-filled holiday season just around the corner, My Weekly Preview has decided to kick-start summer a little early this year. So – here are the top 20 reasons we love summer on the Sunshine Coast.

1 HIT THE BEACH
Foodies will attest to the fact that the Coast is home to some of Australia’s best restaurants. From Asian-fusion to Italian and modern Australian, the region caters to all palates. Earlier this week Yandina’s Spirit House was named number six in TripAdvisor’s 10 best Australian restaurants for 2016. Following closely on its heels was Mooloolaba’s Spice Bar, which placed seventh.
Wide stretches of white sand, blue water and clear skies make beach days a part of everyday life here on the Sunshine Coast. Whether you step foot on the sand regularly or not, it’s difficult to ignore the beauty of the coastline as you navigate through your day. The region is blessed with some of the world’s best beaches. Last summer Surf Life Saving Queensland unveiled its top 10 with Caloundra’s popular Kings Beach taking out the number one spot. Main Beach in Noosa also made the cut, selected in eighth position. However, as residents know, there are dozens of beautiful beaches to explore from

TIP: Be sure to check out Caloundra’s Ballinger Beach (Ann Street) during the busy holiday period. This is a favourite among locals. Located between two schools in a residential area, it is a great surf beach and is also an off-leash dog area. It’s located a short walk from Currimundi Lake.

OUR SUMMER FAVES? You can’t go past a summer’s night, with the moon reflecting off the Maroochy River, at The Boat Shed or Ebb Waterfront Restaurant. Also, be sure to head out for a night under the stars along Maroochydore’s Ocean Street and check out Orleans or La Canteena.

6 ARTS AND CULTURE
When was the last time you grabbed a blanket, packed a basket and headed out to enjoy an afternoon in the sun? There are so many beautiful picnic spots around the Coast and summer is the perfect time to enjoy them.
One thing local artists and music lovers will agree on is that the Coast’s live music scene is alive and well. After a downturn in support for the industry, it is now back bigger and better than ever. Aussie World’s The Shed, Maroochydore’s Solbar, Nambour’s The Bison Bar and local surf clubs have event calendars worth checking out. Art lovers will enjoy visiting the art centres of Maleny and Montville or viewing the latest exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery.
4 NO TRAFFIC Anyone who is game enough to head south over the summer period is guaranteed to get caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Yes, our roads can also be busy through the holidays, but not in comparison to other popular tourist destinations. Free-flowing roads are a definite advantage.
5 SEASONAL PRODUCE Hit the market trail and spend a day under the sun sourcing local produce. The Big Pineapple comes alive on Saturday mornings with markets that are abundant with fresh, local fruit and vegetables. They are just one of about 25 markets across the Coast including the Noosa Farmers Markets, Caloundra Country and Farmers Market and Eumundi Markets. Alternatively, jump in the car and head to Maleny Dairies or to Kenilworth Country Foods to sample some of the locally made, and award-winning, cheese.
WHAT’S ON? Have you got your tickets to see Boy and Bear on stage at Lake Kawana Community Centre on November 19? Or, head to the Peregian Originals event on November 13 to see Sunshine Coast legends Dubarray headline supported by Jimmy Watts Band, Hailey Calvert Trio and Dan Horne Music. The barbecue will be sizzling and there will be plenty of fun in the park from 1pm.

8 PROXIMITY Before long the kids will be on summer holidays and let’s be honest, some days they need a change of scenery. Thankfully, the Coast is located a short drive from the quiet beaches of Bribie Island and the excitement of Brisbane city and all it has to offer.

In need of a mini-break? Escape everyday life and head outdoors. From camping to glamping, you’ll find a great hideaway only a stone’s throw from most Coast towns. Try Boreen Point, Noosa North Shore or the all-new Rivershore Resort, which boasts luxury safari tents. WHERE TO GO: If you haven’t heard of Borumba Deer Park, do yourself a favour and book a weekend away. Located on Yabba Creek, the camping park is great for families.
10 CHILD FRIENDLY We can’t think of another region that is as child friendly over summer as the Sunshine Coast. There are beaches, tourist attractions such as Sea Life, Top Shots and Aussie World, plus canoeing, children’s education and holiday programs, myriad parks and playgrounds. An added bonus is that the restaurants and cafes are kid-friendly, so if you feel like escaping the heat of your own kitchen, there are plenty of alternative options. OUR FAVOURITE? Beautiful Happy Valley has a great playground, plenty of shady trees, green space and lots of barbecues. Plus, it’s only a step away from Bulcock Beach.

annual YogaFest is on this weekend, leading into the coming weeks of entertainment. There will be lots of fun to be had at the various Christmas carol events, cricket lovers won’t want to miss the Sunshine Coast Smash, and the 21st annual Ginger Flower and Food Festival is on in January. Plus, the annual Woodford Folk Festival has a cracker line-up this December – around 400 artists.
If you haven’t yet visited this serene location, do yourself a favour and head up the range to the reserve. The canopy of the trees provides a welcome relief on hot days and it’s a great place to take some time out and enjoy the best nature has to offer.

What is the best thing about the Sunshine Coast? I love the holistic aspect of the region, how there are so many amazing and varied experiences, all within a small geographical area, the river systems, biospheres, villages, 25 million years of Glass House Mountains history, fantastic food choices, sensational beaches, rainforest, events, attractions. And, we have our own airport.
How would you spend your ideal day on the Coast? There are so many things to do and I like all of them. I really enjoy the beaches and water as I grew up with them, but I also have a big soft spot for the hinterland. My partner and I spend a lot of time exploring the countryside with Maleny and Montville being amongst our favourites – how good is the IGA in Maleny?

Lace up your shoes and take in the beauty of Sunshine Coast Council’s Coastal Pathway. Stretching from Pelican Waters up to Tewantin, it is the region’s longest shared pathway providing a scenic route for walking, jogging or cycling. Maps are available at council’s website.
Need we say more? Take in the sunshine, long days and beautiful evenings that summer in paradise has to offer.

Fishing, boating, surfing – need we say more. Rich in beauty, the internationally recognised Pumicestone Passage is a haven for recreational fisherman, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and swimming. Off-shore fishing from Mooloolaba is also a popular pastime through summer as the days become longer.
Summer screams ice-cream. Grab a gelato, head to the beach and celebrate the simple things in life.
FEELING ADVENTUROUS? Subtropical rainforest and picturesque waterfalls in secluded areas of the Blackall Range are highlights of the 58-kilometre, four-day Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk. There are bush campsites along the way, or you can opt for a short half-day or full-day walk within the route.

FIVE YEAR COMMITMENT TO DUNE RESEARCH National development company Sekisui House has committed to a medium-term sponsorship of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s world-leading marine and coastal research team to investigate the biodiversity and ecological function of coastal dunes and beaches of the Sunshine Coast region. As one of two major beachfront landowners in the region, Sekisui senior development manager Evan Aldridge says they are “vitally interested in how best to protect the irreplaceable ecological assets of sandy shore ecosystems, including surf zones, beaches, and dunes.” Professor Thomas Schlacher says the research funding allows the team to examine and map biodiversity across the region, which will provide better planning data.
LIGHTNING STRIKES COAST NETBALL TEAMS The Sunshine Coast Lightning team has began to build links with the community, with coach Noeline Taurua and several players on hand at the SunCoast Lynx netball trials recently. Taurua was joined by squad members Madeline McAuliffe, Cara Koenen, Stephanie Wood and Laura Scherian as more than 100 netball players from around the region took part in the tryouts. The players assisted the coaches with the training drills and offered advice on how to progress to netball’s elite level.

$530,000 MAYOR TAKES ON LGAQ TOP JOB Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has been elected president of the Local Government Association of Queensland for the next four years, replacing acting president Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill. The role will see Jamieson lead the state’s 77 councils. He says he will seek to improve productivity and financial sustainability in councils, help the sector gain access to innovative new markets and connect to the digital economy and foster stronger indigenous communities through the state.
Community organisations across the Sunshine Coast have more chances to receive council grants with more than $530,000 being approved for the region. Community Programs Portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says this round of grant funding will assist music and literature projects, a program to support children at risk, the establishment of a community garden, festive season events, community facility upgrades and much more. Applications for the next round of major grants in Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Grants Program will open on February 1, 2017 and grants information sessions will be held throughout February. GOLDEN GIRL COMES UP ROSES Coolum’s Chanelle Louise left a lucrative stockbroking career and is capturing global attention with her luxury beauty beverage. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
A
shocking accident four years ago ended 28-year-old Chanelle Louise’s international stockbroking career and brought her back home to the Sunshine Coast, where she has put her knowledge of business and finance to good use and reinvented herself as an entrepreneur in the lucrative health and beauty industry. In 2012, she was working as a derivatives analyst for the Bank of New York in London and aggressively climbing the corporate ladder. She’d been maintaining a long-distance relationship with her now husband, Darcy Higgins, and was looking forward to his impending visit to London. The day Higgins was due to fly out he was riding his motorbike in Coolum, buying supplies for his trip, when a van crossed to his side of the road and hit him head-on. He died at the scene but was later resuscitated and spent a month in a coma, followed by six months in a brain injury rehabilitation unit in Brisbane. “He had to learn to walk and talk again,” says Louise. “Due to his brain injury, he was told he’s not to drink alcohol again. We loved having a red wine on a Friday night and we loved fine dining, but I decided not to drink alcohol either. “Once he had got better, we felt that ritual was missing from our lives. I was drinking rose tea at the time and I loved how the rosebuds opened up in the warm water – I thought it was really beautiful. I started playing around with iced rose tea drinks – I wanted to replace that red wine experience, so I set up a distillation operation in my home kitchen and started playing around with rose oils and powders.” The result was Cilk Rose Water, a concentrated rosewater elixir you can add to sparkling water, champagne or smoothies. Louise launched the luxury product online in February and it has quickly captured global attention. “I just did a partnership with Alexander Wang for Paris Fashion Week,” she says. “He was serving it in his showroom and was gifting it to his clients and celebrities. “I received an email from Vogue on a Friday evening saying they wanted product for a photoshoot in Sydney on Monday and there were no couriers that could get it there on time, so I flew there myself on Monday morning and hand-delivered it. It featured in the beauty section of their June issue, alongside Elle Macpherson’s wellness product.” Louise now has stockists in Singapore and China, is looking at export opportunities in Korea and has been approached by a major premium department store in the US. “I had that very cliché lightbulb moment where I was in the bathroom one morning and realised a lot of my skincare had rosewater in it. I realised the rose drink I was working on could

be more than just a drink, that it could be a beauty product. So I delved into the beauty and health benefits and history of roses and rosewater and noticed there was a gap in the market for not only rose drinks, but beauty products you can consume.” After refining her formula, Louise had it tested for its nutrient value. She worked with the Southern Cross University’s plant science lab and discovered the product contained high antioxidant and vitamin properties. She’s now working with
naturopaths and dermatologists to determine its health benefits and effects on skin. Louise participated in the Spark Bureau’s first startup incubator in Maroochydore, graduating in June, and says the business just took off after that. “I didn’t do any advertising or pay influencers, I think it was just word of mouth,” she says. “A few beauty editors came across the Instagram page and wrote articles when I first launched and that’s what gained the traffic to the site and the sales, and I got a lot of write-ups in the US. “When I started the incubator I’d just officially launched the business and it did help in terms of support. When I pressed the go button, I wasn’t expecting to get worldwide sales so quickly. About two months ago we broke even, we made back the startup costs I put into it. Now we’re making a profit and I’ve got some interest from private investors who are quite influential business people. There’s a lot of opportunity at the moment.” Louise is happily married and living in Coolum with Higgins, who runs a cafe in Noosa. She hopes to one day have a daughter to pass her business down to. Or, she may just sell it to a company like Estée Lauder once the glitterati discover it as the latest must-have beauty product.

There will be 20,890 more seats to and from Sydney and 17,150 on the Melbourne–Sunshine Coast route, as well as the 23,400 seats on the new Adelaide service provided by Jetstar. The additional capacity is another great show of confidence and support from the airlines in our region and our local airport. As well as bringing more visitors to the Sunshine Coast in what is a very popular time for holidaymakers, it also gives our residents more options to travel south and see friends and family without having the hassle of travelling to Brisbane. Our airport’s growth figures continue to lead the country and that is encouraging the airlines to boost their Coast schedules. PARK PLAN FOR SIPPY DOWNS We know everyone loves our beautiful parks and we’re always looking to improve what we have to offer our community. A long-term project to guide the development of a draft Sippy Downs Parks Master Plan is underway and we want to hear what you think. Improving the quality of open space, addressing ageing park infrastructure and creating a park network for Sippy Downs will be the key focus of the consultation. Over the next few weeks, council officers will be conducting park user surveys at local parks and your feedback will let council know about the community’s desires and expectations for upgrades to these parks and the overall park network. Once the consultation is complete, a draft master plan will be put together and then made available for public feedback before seeking council’s approval to start a detailed planning phase. It is expected there will be a staged program of construction over future years, subject to funding.

THE SCOTS ARE COMING Up to 300 athletes and support staff from Team Scotland will call the Sunshine Coast home in the lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. The team will base their official overseas preparation camp at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort with the country’s best athletes, staying for up to three weeks before the Games begin on the Gold Coast on April 4. The 2014 Commonwealth Games hosts will be joined at Twin Waters by 32 athletes and officials from the Isle of Man in the lead-up to the Gold Coast Games, while up to 60 athletes and officials from Wales will be based in Brightwater for around two months leading into the event. Council is exploring avenues to maximise exposure for the Sunshine Coast during the Scottish team’s visit. One of those will be a commercial featuring Scottish judo champion Euan Burton who was a gold medallist and flag bearer for Scotland in the Glasgow 2014 Games.
The advertisement will showcase the Sunshine Coast for a competition that will offer a trip for two to the Sunshine Coast with accommodation at Twin Waters and VIP visits to our leading tourist attractions. There will also be opportunities to meet the Scottish Commonwealth Games athletes during their training camp. This week’s Scotland announcement was made at the University of Sunshine Coast Sports Centre, where a large number of Team Scotland athletes, along with those from Wales and the Isle of Man, will be spending much of their time during their stay. Scotland is coming off its most successful Commonwealth Games in 2014, where as hosts it won 19 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals to finish fourth on the medal table. STUDY: MELATONIN THE KEY FOR SLEEPYHEAD TEENS Teenagers often get a bad wrap for being lazy when they refuse to get out of bed for school because they’re too tired. However for some it’s not a bad attitude, it’s their body clock that’s to blame. Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSPD) is a physiological condition that affects a person’s ability to fall a sleep at night and is highly prevalent in adolescents. New Australian research, unveiled at the national sleep conference in Adelaide this week, has found melatonin to be effective in helping those with DSPD get better and more sleep. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that anticipates the daily onset of darkness. For people with DSPD the time melatonin is produced and secreted is significantly delayed. Separate research conducted at Flinders University showing a morning walk is beneficial for teenagers with DSPD was also presented at the The Sleep DownUnder 2016 conference. AAP

he Morcombes are walking with a very precious passenger at today’s Day For Daniel. Bruce and Denise will be clutching their first grandson during the walk. Denise is beaming with happiness over the birth of little Winston, who is nearly three months old and the son of Daniel’s twin brother Bradley and his wife Anna. “It will be very special having Winston at the walk and he already has his red Daniel Morcombe T-shirt,” says Denise. “It gives us fire in the belly to continue our precious work at the Foundation and it must go on. Daniel would be very proud,”she adds. Indeed, Daniel would be very proud. At last the Morcombes seem lighter. Those eyes of Denise’s finally do not look haunted with the terrors she has been through. They have a twinkle. While no one can bring their handsome little boy back, there is finally the joy a baby can bring a family. And all of Australia will no doubt be smiling to see the local family finally get some happiness. I know thousands of us on the Coast will be wearing red to support Daniel Morcombe’s family and to support the day that spreads the message about stranger danger. Tens of thousands will follow suit around Australia.
“We love Day For Daniel and we love seeing all the photos and images from people and schools around the country. We have 2400 schools registered around Australia,” says Denise. I met Bruce and Denise a day or two after Daniel went missing. I was a journalist at the time for Seven Local News. I watched Bruce address media scrums with dogged determination to get his message out when inside he must have been screaming in rage and desperation. I watched Denise and stared into those eyes so many times and wanted to just stop her agony. The constant coverage of stories about pedophiles and the depraved details I would hear were some of my reasons to leave news journalism. Four years ago I had a son born on the morning of Day For Daniel. I spoke to Denise on the phone and cried as I felt so thankful her and Bruce have worked so hard to protect our kids after losing their child. So please, wear red today. Join the walk if you can and show your support. Jump on social media and hashtag the day. And most importantly, talk to your children about stranger danger. And they don’t ask for this, but say a prayer for the Morcombes for them to continue to find happiness and peace in their private lives.

Rebecca Grisman says the Sunshine Coast has so much going for it that we struggle to define ourselves under a united brand image.
I
think the Sunshine Coast as a region is lacking a brand image. I love living here but when asked why, I struggle to give a pithy reason – it’s partly the small city pace; partly the beautiful patchwork of beaches, farms and rainforest; partly the startup opportunities for business and cultural events; and mostly, my friends. I’ve asked visitors from France, Melbourne and Africa for their impressions and opinions of our local features and strengths versus weaknesses. Generally, visitors expect our great beaches – but they have beaches at home too, or were also awestruck by other Australian hotspots. We are more than just a string of beaches. I strongly support the efforts of tourism leaders to put us on the world map, but we are also more than just tourism. Some visitors remarked on the traffic congestion, our reliance on cars, and the poor public transport as a lasting impression. Some noted the lack of welcoming signage representing the region and offering a sense of arrival. Surely we are also more than our roads and signs. Our local seafood and produce rates highly, but not so much our dining out options, service or diversity – and don’t even mention kitchen closing times or the dearth of places open on a Monday. Locals know this well and so we keep a shortlist of reliably favourite restaurants and excitedly celebrate new openings, innovative chefs and inventive menus. We definitely must aim to
be more than our food scene. Every weekend it seems we are teeming with major events, festivals, markets and community gatherings dotted throughout the coast’s villages, when a decade ago our surf clubs and shopping centres were the social hubs. We also have many active charities and community organisations that provide an impressive safety net for us all. We are more than the things that a visitor’s eye can see. Several bodies and chambers of commerce are working to create an allied

It’s a good step towards a united front, look and feel. I don’t think it is the role or responsibility of one sector, or of councils, to frame our regional brand image and we don’t need another round of logo reviews. (Spare us the ubiquitous renditions of pandanus and sun graphics.) It seems perfect timing as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the naming of our region to come together as a unified voice and image, based on understanding who we are now and what our future could be.

OPEC CUTS A POSITIVE STEP Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) recent high level agreement to cut production is a positive step. As we await more details from the next OPEC meeting on November 30, much uncertainty remains as to how these cuts will be accomplished and whether members will actually agree on the required adjustments. After allowing for further volume recovery in Iran, Libya and Nigeria, the size of the cuts that members of OPEC may be asked to bear may be too great. Our energy analysts now assume more restrained OPEC production next year will help the market rebalance from the second quarter in 2017, which would aid a gradual recovery in the Brent oil price to around US$60 ($78) per barrel by the end of 2017. While short on detail, OPEC’s
announcement signals that current oil prices are a pressure point for them. In fact, according to data from the International Monetary Fund, for more than a year now, oil prices have been below the level required to see most OPEC members balance their budgets. Even if the bottom end of the targeted production range is not achieved, a move to keep production steady would still reflect a more conciliatory approach by OPEC helping to reduce supply burdens and improving the prospects of a rebalancing in oil markets in 2017. While oil inventories are elevated, the low oil price has been dragging on other supply drivers. The number of rigs has fallen 60 per cent globally, while non-OPEC crude oil production has started to moderate and is now down three per cent from its peak. It is estimated that global investment in upstream exploration and development declined by circa 20 per cent in 2015 and is expected to see a similar drop again in 2016. As such, the overall rate of growth in supply is starting to slow as is the inventory
build, creating prospects for an improvement in oil market fundamentals. Longer term, there remains headwinds for the oil price, including a structural shift towards renewable energy, uncertainties around US energy policy, and more cost effective technologies. However we believe, once inventories are worked down, a longer term oil price of US$75 per barrel is needed to induce investment back into the sector. Of the key commodities, oil, gold and iron ore are our preferred exposures with better price outlooks heading into 2017. Moreover, oil is one we are more constructive on, with our preferred exposures being OilSearch, Woodside and at the higher risk end, Origin.

The Sunshine Coast as we know it took shape in the 1980s, when there was a building frenzy to exploit this new pot of real estate and tourism gold, writes Dot Whittington.

T
he region had been gaining impetus during the 1970s, and by 1980 it was shucking off its veneer of country cousin and stepping on to the national stage as a beautiful but relatively undeveloped area on the brink of big things. It was finding its place on the map. The three local councils were swamped as applications flooded in to provide housing in all forms – subdivisions of all sizes, canal developments, and beachfront apartments from six-packs to medium and high-rise towers. Inevitably, there were growing pains and town planning was introduced to the landscape to cope with them. When Maroochy Shire gazetted its first town planning scheme in 1973, it was the first on the Sunshine Coast. After much to-ing and fro-ing it had 17 zones to cater for residents, business, industry and landholders. It also introduced height controls on tourist development in 1980, which led to bitter disputes between developers, councils and citizens fearing the consequences. The state government, if called in to override council decisions, usually came down on the side of the development industry with “ministerial rezonings”. It was the Bjelke-Petersen era and Russ Hinze was known as the Minister for Everything, Local Government among them.
The Gold Coaster who made little secret of his white shoes, wasn’t overly sympathetic to the cries of “no more high-rise” and “this is not the Gold Coast” that prevailed through the ‘80s. Land prices took off and Noosa became the real estate rocket. In 1981, Noosa Shire valuations showed an overall rise of 188 per cent with Noosa Heads accounting for the largest share. The total shire valuation from June 1981, was $193,659,570 compared with $64,225,100 in 1976. A 124 square-metre Hastings Street shop site went from $14,600 to $93,000 and a 2697square-metre site for apartments from $134,700 to $1.1 million. A Noosa Sound shop site jumped from $40,000 to $407,000 while a house site with canal frontage soared from $16,000 to $130,000. The story was similar although not quite as dramatic further south. The first lot at Mountain Creek was sold on October 4, 1982 for $20,000. The last lots were sold in 1987 for $70,000. The maxim “build it and they will come” prevailed and by 1996, the Sunshine Coast was the 12th largest community in Australia after growing at a rate well above the national average for more than 30 years.

Applications close at the end of the month for a special, one-off 50th anniversary grant to celebrate our identity and engage our community. It is open to not-for-profit groups and organisations for projects, events and activities that support the 50th anniversary and its legacy. Round one closes October 31. Not-for-profit organisations that operate within the Sunshine Coast local government area or can demonstrate the project, activity or event will benefit residents of the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area are eligible to apply. There are two types of grants available, category A up to $2000 and category B up to $20,000. ’m in a reflective mood this week, friends. I reckon if I had my time again, I’d probably add cheese to more things. Seriously, think about it. There ain’t nothing that cannot be improved with the addition of tasty cheese. Speaking of which, here’s the best, most cheesiest joke of the year. Did you hear about the explosion at the cheese factory in France? There was nothing left but de Brie. If I had a dollar for every woman who told me I was unattractive, they’d eventually find me attractive. Seriously, a woman accosted me at the pub a coupla Fridays ago and gave it a bit of, “You know, I’ve seen you on the

telly, yeah I have… the TV makes you look good. But you do look skinnier in real life”. The fact is the camera puts on five kilograms lady. Maybe I should stop eating cameras. Worst part about it is my mate Nugget witnessed the whole exchange. I haven’t stopped hearing about it. Here’s a tip. If you’re ever wondering who the oldest James Bond is. Do not, repeat do NOT simply Google “Old man Bond age”. Trust me on this last one. Late 2016 realisation. There’s nothing I have learned from being a father of four that I couldn’t have just as easily worked out from setting all my money on fire. And finally, as I draw to a close my reflective mood friends, life and beer are very similar. Chill for best results. This week I’m stoked to bring you a cracking local brew from two lads from Moffat Beach. Matt Hepburn and Christen McGarry formed Your Mates Brewing Co just over a year ago and in that time they’ve made a significant impact on craft brewing, not just on the Coast but all over Queensland. I met the boys in Caloundra 12 months ago when they were starting out with a sweet as Pale Ale. Fast forward to today and the fellas now offer four beers, but it’s the original
that we’re looking at this week. And for the record, it’s a ripper. I’m a shameless bandit for a PA, there’s no secret there. I love the distinctive hop-driven fruity aromas, the perfect blend of passionfruit and citrus, along with the deep golden colour and the crisp refreshing finish you get from a well-brewed Pale. How did you become a cocktail expert? I worked and lived in San Diego, California. Being over there you’ve got the beer scene and the food scene. It’s like a smaller version of LA. It has boomed with culture and music. I worked at a brewery and got my beer knowledge from there. Coming here I dove a little bit further into it.
Tell us about Orleans Restaurant and Bar. During daytime you have the lunch crowd. When the sun goes down, the lights shine and it’s a cool little speakeasy kind of thing. You walk in and you just feel it. I have been

o you know who is entitled to view a will? The list may surprise you. It is quite common for people to keep the contents of their will private throughout their lives. This means that when they die, their family and others close to them are naturally curious to know what the will says. While the period immediately after someone dies is often an emotional time, it is important for those who hold the will to understand that there are a broad range of people entitled, by Queensland law, to inspect the will or be provided with a copy. These people include: • Any person mentioned in the will, even if not specifically named and even if they don’t actually stand to receive anything under the will • Any person who stood to receive
something under an earlier will of the deceased • Any parent, spouse, child (including a step child), grandchild or further descendant • The parents or guardians of a child mentioned in the will • A creditor or other person who has a legal claim on the estate. rinting definitely has its own vocabulary and also certain limitations. Not everyone has the same passion or desire to live and breathe the world of paper and ink or has the same understanding of print terms as the team at EPM, so if you want print to be a little less confusing, read on. Traditional offset printing is the most popular and involves artwork being transferred onto a metal plate and mounted onto a printing press, where it interacts with water and ink to achieve the required image. The image is then transferred onto a rubber blanket and finally onto the sheet of paper passing through the printing press. Offset is still the platform of choice for high quality, high volume print. It has a longer setup time than digital which means that the first sheet off the press costs more to produce but it becomes cheaper once the
press is running. You can achieve great colour control and consistency this way. Digital printing is a newer technology that has become popular over the past decade due to significant improvements in quality and reliability. Instead of printing plates, images are driven directly from the processor onto the press which allows for a different image to be produced with every impression. They are either toner based (a powdered form of ink) or electro-ink (a liquid more closely related to traditional ink) and are capable of being setup in a short amount of time so are favoured for short runs and fast turnaround work. The cost of producing a sheet remains consistent throughout the job, meaning there is a stage when digital becomes less economical than offset. For more information go to expressprintandmail.com.au.

t’s been a prime ministerial buzz word for months but if you don’t know what “innovation” actually means, you’re not alone. Almost half the Australian businesses who rate themselves as innovative actually aren’t, according to research from Commonwealth Bank. The financial institution says many firms are mistaking business improvements for innovation. The bank reports that 82 per cent of firms believe they are innovating, but only 44 per cent are actually doing so, according to standards recognised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. “For example, if you take a very highly innovative global firm like Apple, when they’re launching a new iPhone, launching a new colour range or changing the basic dimensions of the phone would be an improvement,” Commonwealth Bank business and private banking group executive Adam Bennett says. “But when you’re introducing Siri or a brand new operating system, that would be what we classify as an innovation.” Locally, the same applies - albeit on a smaller scale. “If you took an accounting firm, an

A WELCOME FRESHEN UP Once a class leader, Honda’s latest Accord V6 is a plush but compromised example of the long-standing model. By Peter Atkinson.
C
all it the Tiger Woods syndrome: being too good for your own good. It happens when you set the bar so high, for so long, that even just coming back to the field is viewed as a failure. Excellence can be a harsh master. So when someone, or something, achieves it for a sustained period, we tend to be rather unforgiving when the halo slips. So it is for Japanese car maker Honda, which has copped a few bruises in the recent years.
Having enjoyed its status as the Mercedes-Benz of Japan for a decade or more, Honda slipped back to the pack a few years ago and has struggled recently to regain its mojo. Honda, having been the Japanese benchmark for quality, stylish design and product innovation through the early 2000s, has watched rival Mazda grab that mantle and run with it. Happily, there have been recent signs of a Honda revival – including the relaunch of its halo model, the NSX supercar.
But there’s still a way to go if the car we’ve just driven – the recently-refreshed Honda Accord, is any example. The iconic Accord nameplate celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and as recently as a few years ago was an unequivocal leader in its class. The model has returned to a single body style these days – albeit it with the option of a four-cylinder or six-cylinder powerplant – as tested here. Now into its ninth generation, the Accord is still a good car, but probably sits somewhere in the middle of the pack. A recent facelift has given the Accord a welcome freshen up, with new technology and electronic aides added to the mix. Those features include adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking system and lane-keeping assist system; multi-angle reversing camera and trailer stability assist. Luxury features include satellite navigation, leather trim, electric rear sun blind and colour touchscreen display. One feature we particularly liked was a camera, mounted in the passenger side mirror, which is activated when the left-hand indicator is pressed. We weren’t as keen on the Accord’s lane departure system that wobbles the steering wheel gently from side to side when you inadvertently cross a solid lane. It’s much more intrusive than other similar systems
that merely vibrate the steering wheel or give an audible warning. The Accord’s finishes are first class and the cockpit nicely thought out with vivid colour display screens and easy-to-read, attractive instruments. Dynamically though, the Accord seems to have been left behind by its rivals. The 3.5-litre V6 is punchy and smooth enough but at 9.2L/100km is a bit thirsty. That’s partly because it is coupled to six-speed auto that falls short of best-inclass when compared to the eight and nine-speed options available elsewhere. Still, the Accord is handsome, comfortable and otherwise refined.
HONDA ACCORD V6L HOW BIG? Once a smallish hatchback, the Accord these days is a full-sized family sedan with room for five adults, plus a decent boot.
HOW FAST? Despite its impressive 206kW, the Honda’s V6 delivers only average performance.
HOW THIRSTY? Its average thirst of 9.2L/100km is, once again, a bit disappointing. HOW MUCH? We tested the flagship V6L model listed at $52,590 plus onroads. However the four-cylinder Vti starts as low as $32,990.

COAST PROPERTY MARKET HEATING UP Despite reports that Brisbane is facing an oversupply of units, Coast agents are calling for more stock to feed the growing buyer demand. Journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane explores in part one of a five week series.
W
hile reports suggest that Brisbane’s property market is in oversupply of apartments, the Sunshine Coast is facing a different issue – real estate agents can’t get their hands on enough houses to meet increasing demand. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s Market Monitor report for the June Quarter shows there were 328 less sales in the Sunshine Coast local government area in the last quarter than there were at the same time in 2015. Of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa suburbs listed in the report, just 24 had the same number of sales or outperformed last year, while 43 experienced a drop in year-on-year sales. According to the experts, it is not due to lack of interest from buyers, or a struggling property market. CoreLogic’s Highest and Lowest Turnover of Housing Stock report, which was released earlier this month, shows the number of residential properties sold in the past year has reduced across the nation. “One of the main reasons behind the decline in sales has been a reduction in

The days of thinking about it for a week are over” stock becoming available for sale,” the report states. “In addition to fewer homes being available for sale, lending conditions have also tightened and affordability constraints are preventing some market segments from being more active.” According to CoreLogic, just 4.9 per cent of the total national dwelling stock transacted in the 12 months to June 2016. In comparison, the Sunshine Coast had a comfortable 6.9 per cent turnover, with 8468 homes sold from a possible 122,209. This placed it equal ninth on the table of top 25 turnover council areas, which included a majority of regions in coastal markets and also a number of council areas in which there has been significant housing supply additions during the year. “The heightened level of turnover in lifestyle markets indicates that the

popularity of purchases in these markets has returned after many years in the doldrums,” the report concludes. Day & Grimes Real Estate principal agent Ian Black, who specialises in property within a 20 kilometre radius of Nambour, says house and land, both new and established, up to $450,000 is in undersupply. “Quality level land for slab on ground construction up to $230,000 is virtually non-existent,” he says. “There has been a lot of new units built in the inner Brisbane precinct. A lot of the stock has been sold to investors. Both sale and rental oversupply is coming. “In comparison, sales on the Coast are occurring at an excellent rate, but again in the bottom end where high rents and low interest rates are the two factors in play attracting buyers to the market both as owner occupiers and investors. “Positive gearing is the new paradigm for investors taking the place of capital growth and tax concessions as the way to get value from property in a low inflationary climate.” Up the hill, Maleny Real Estate’s Jess Luthje says they have only one-third of the stock for sale they had two years ago, with the same number of buyers wanting to move to the hinterland. “The hinterland market is buoyant at the moment with well-priced, well presented property selling very quickly,” she says “It means if buyers see a property they

<from page 38 because if you don’t, you’re going to miss out on the property you want as it’s a very competitive market for buyers.” Further south in Caloundra, Next Property Group agent Kerri Johnston, who specialises in Pelican Waters real estate, says a tightening of stock a few months ago has relaxed. “There seems to be more confidence in the market and more listings are coming on the market,” she says. “Stock is moving in the lower price ranges, however, in the million-plus range, it still is taking a lot of work and longer days on the market. “Of course, sometimes I may have the buyer just waiting for a particular house to come on the market and it sells in a week, but generally in the higher end of the market, it’s a few months.” Johnston says local buyers are up against stiff competition from cashed-up southerners, who sell their homes for a motser to capitalise on undersupply and then look for their dream home on the Coast to get more bang for their buck. “They are buying a house they could never afford in Sydney or Melbourne and these sales are pushing our market up, which is great,” she says.
WATERFRONT PROPERTIES IN PEAK DEMAND Next Property Group’s Karen Jones has seen a lot of trends ebb and flow in the property market since she entered real estate in 2001, but what she is experiencing now is peak demand for waterfront property. “The demand in the areas I am selling is increasing and properties are selling quickly with a limited number of new properties coming on the market,” Jones says.
“In the sub $2 million bracket, the supply of waterfront property is very low. In August and September, I sold 10 waterfront properties from Mooloolaba to Wurtulla. The demand is very strong.” While some areas of the Brisbane market are experiencing an oversupply, Jones says we are seeing the opposite when it comes to waterfront property on the Sunshine Coast.
Buyers will be faced with buying older property and refurbishing or even demolishing and rebuilding once the last couple of blocks of land have sold, she says. And the competition is fierce as interstate retirees and investors have cottoned on to the value of buying waterfront property on the Sunshine Coast. “Most of the buyers I am now dealing with are not local buyers and they have sold in southern markets and are keen to buy. They think our waterfront market offers great value and are jumping in.’’ “If I were buying in the current market, I would be decisive. I believe that if you wait longer or deliberate it could mean that you are paying more for the property. “The prime positioned properties in the $1 million plus bracket have only experienced minimal price growth in the last couple of years, but that looks like it is about to change.”

Okay, I may or may not have found some rather large fire crackers recently – just sayin’. With my nine-year-old in hand we proceeded to place and light in fresh, rather large cow poo. Man, that is so much fun, running away from an exploding poo. Still waiting on a result from Portugal. Will John John win the world title? Let’s hope so. This weekend, not so much in the way of waves, but enjoy all the same. And, watch out for exploding poo.

ESTUARY: Flathead working across Maroochy Bar on the bigger tides this week with quality fish taken on live whiting and gold or pink lures. Whiting feeding on the yabby banks of Goat and Channel Islands on the rising night tides. Sand crabs in the deeper water around Twin Waters and up to the motorway bridge with mullet frames producing the better quality. A few trevally on the top of the tide. SURF: Quality dart and whiting along Maroochy North Shore with worms and pippies best. Still a few chopper tailor and bream taking pilly pieces at Pincushion about an hour after dark. OFFSHORE: The Blinker being a perfect fish attracting device has been returning amberjack and kingies on jigged lures and live bait. Snapper and pearl perch taking pilchards, squid and plastics in the deeper water just beyond the north eastern point of the Barwon Banks with conditions allow. FRESHWATER: Lake Borumba returning bass and spangled perch and jew on shrimps and lures. Bjelke Petersen Dam returning quality golden perch while trolling deep diving lures over humps just near the boat ramp. Lake Boondooma has had plenty of fishing pressure lately and is still returning bass and golden perch on fly, lures and live shrimps.

s I lie in bed at 2.30 in the morning I start to catalogue the differences between living in a CBD apartment in Darwin and residing in a house on acreage in Mooloolah. We have only made the switch to the smaller abode in the last week or so, but it’s already a significant shock to the system. The reason I am awake at this hour on a weeknight has nothing to do with hard living at an age when I should know better. “The reason I am awake at this hour on a weeknight has nothing to do with hard living…” by a car as we negotiate the road verges around my old place in the hills. If I forget an ingredient for dinner, I can just run across the road to get it. Even better, most nights we don’t cook at all. Instead we duck out to one of many restaurants that are stumbling distance from our communal security door. But that creates its own challenges.
Before the move I bought three new business shirts. The saleswoman at Myer said I should get the European style – the Classic fit would look like a parachute on me. Two weeks later I tried on one of those shirts, and it was tighter than the car park below my apartment building. Alas, all that rich food has turned me into a Classic sort of guy, and now I really do need a parachute to prevent my self-esteem from free falling. I ponder all this, wondering whether or not the saleswoman was just being polite to get a sale, and chastising myself for not trying the shirts on, when a song comes on upstairs that I know, and like. I sing along with the chorus until the music suddenly stops. Would it be rude to knock on my neighbour’s door at this time of the night to request just one more tune? rolearylastword@gmail.com
