BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Touring was my first job. Much to my parents’ dismay I hit the road at about 15 with my violin. I also worked at a coffee store and because I was touring a lot and mostly thinking about songs, I made horrid coffees, including leaving a bottle of cream out for the night and almost servings maggots on someone’s iced frappe… oops.

I had a moment last year – playing with Kasey Chambers at the Gympie Muster where I looked at the 25,000-plus crowd and thought “Sh*t, I do this for a living?”. When you’re playing music full-time, you’re so busy thinking about chords, notes and lyrics you forget to take the moment in.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? The Jesus Christ Superstar show of course. Oh and I’m still touring with Shane Nicholson, Sara Storer and a tribute for Jon English. I’m also working on my first full-length album.

I was playing folk/country music for a very long time until Jon came along. When I got the call to go on tour with Jon and the band it changed everything for me musically. I never thought I’d be in a musical until Jon encouraged me to look into it.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

My librarian, university lecturing dad. My strong, supportive mum and my little brother Lukey, who is studying at USC.

Getting through my life with anxiety and depression. Each day is hard but rewarding.

FIRST CAR?

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

A green 1997 Holden Commodore. It wasn’t much to look at but I got in it the other day and wow, it still goes pretty good.

When I’m with my loved ones (that includes my pug, Peanut) and of course when I’m performing on stage.

FAVOURITE BOOK?

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

I don’t have one favourite but I read a lot about mental health as I live with anxiety and depression. (I live well with it these days too). I also enjoy books on Buddhism.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? The Happiness Trap. It’s a great book about accepting bad times will happen and that’s OK, it’s part of being a human – they will pass and happiness will arrive once again.

FAVOURITE SONG?

People who lack compassion for others. Oh and people who don’t indicate on the roads. Damn that’s annoying.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I just had a holiday at Coolum Beach. It was the most beautiful break filled with beach walks, good coffee and song writing.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? By blogging and promoting positive mental health discussion wherever I can. Oh and in the car I deal with my frustrations by swearing more than any one ever should.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF?

The Real Thing by Russell Morris. I grew up on ‘60s music. Also the Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin (my fave band ever).

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

You can do everything you wish, don’t worry about the future.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

I’d usually go straight to the old faithful Noosa but I think Pomona is really coming into it’s own with more coffee, arts and indie stores – it’s something different from the beach.

Oh tea. If someone tells me they don’t drink tea and they don’t like dogs or cats – I’m very suspicious of them. Tea pot warmed, add black loose leaf tea, steep for five to eight minutes, pour and add oat milk and sugar if desired. Perfect. My dad makes the best tea; I just try to live up to his standard.

I can’t pinpoint one selected piece of advice. It’s a culmination of mostly things Jon told me while we were on tour. And that mostly consisted of “no matter how or what you feel, go on stage and give the best show you can possibly give.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? I grew up in Gympie from 13 to 18. I was so fortunate to spend my teenage years studying with some of the best teachers you’d find in this country.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’d love to see the music industry expand a little more. I can see it growing more and more with places like the Bison Bar in Nambour and Solbar in Maroochyodore, but maybe a few more spaces like that for live music and art would be great.

TEA OR COFFEE?

NRL OR AFL? Oh dear, I can’t lie I don’t watch much sport but for Jon I go for the Parramatta Eels and for myself in AFL I go for the Sydney Swans.

MAKING A LUNCH BOX THAT HITS THE MARK The perfect lunch box is one that’s healthy and gets gobbled up by hungry little mouths – and it’s not rocket science. Compiled by Candice Holznagel.

acking a lunch box can be a dreaded chore. Parents will know the feeling. Day after day, you struggle to come up with an innovative and nutritious offering, only to be faced with an uneaten lunch at the end of your child’s day. How can we make sure that not only are we providing the perfect palate pleaser, but meeting the recommended dietary guidelines? After all, eating healthy food helps children learn, develop and concentrate. The Australian Government’s dietary guidelines provide recommended serves from the five food groups for specific age groups and suggest limiting the foods that are high in saturated fat, sugar and added salts. This means eating plenty of fresh fruit,

vegetables, protein, grains and dairy. Eating the correct foods will assist in preventing chronic health conditions later in life, such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. As an added benefit, children will feel happier and healthier. With the final school term of the year kicking off recently, My Weekly Preview decided to find out a little more about what constitutes a healthy lunch box. University of the Sunshine Coast fourth year dietetics students Jessica English and Danica Warren-Amson are currently researching and creating a healthy school tuckshop program. Here, they share their tips with parents on how to successfully provide children with food that they will enjoy. Throughout the years, how have parents adapted to the changing school

lunch trends? English: Parents are faced with many challenges and barriers when deciding what to pack their children for school lunches. Pre-packaged snack foods have become a large component to children’s lunches being quick, easy and cheap alternatives. Studies show parents want help selecting lunch box food and drinks that are nutritious, convenient, affordable and appealing for children to eat. Supporting families to choose a healthy lunch is important because we know that about 40 per cent of foods that children eat are not considered healthy. How have schools met changing dietary expectations? Warren-Amson: All state schools in Queensland must follow the Smart Choices Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy,

which is focused on offering students healthy food and drink choices in tuckshops and all school events, including fundraising. Food and drinks are classified in a traffic light system: green – have plenty; amber – select carefully; and red – occasional. Smart Choices is an important strategy for schools to create supportive environments for healthy eating, and encourage children to eat foods more in line with the Australian Dietary Guidelines. How can we make kids’ lunch boxes more exciting? Warren-Amson: Make kids’ lunch boxes exciting by getting them involved in the preparation and the packing. Mix it up by cutting foods into favourite shapes, go for lots of colour with fruit and vegies and make foods easy to eat – think vegie sticks like carrot, cucumber, capsicum, beans or celery myweeklypreview.com.au

Warren-Amson: What we don’t often realise is that there’s a lot more to food than just eating it; foods might have to be offered up to 20 times before it makes it to their mouth. Continue to offer different foods, let

them smell it, touch it and play with it. Present foods in different shapes – use a cookie cutter to cut their sandwiches. Offer them one of their favourite foods with something new – if they love peanut butter, put it on some celery sticks. How can we teach our children about good nutrition?

English: Children learn to like the foods they are repeatedly exposed to. The more children are exposed to trialling a food – the greater the chance of acceptance and likelihood of enjoying those foods later in life. Packing a healthy lunch box teaches children to enjoy a variety of fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods in preference to less desirable food choices, such as chips and sweets. Encouraging these preferences at a young age helps to support healthier food choices later in life. Good nutrition is an important part of ensuring healthy development and continued health into adulthood.

Stuck for ideas? Dress up your child’s lunch box with these helpful hints and snack ideas: • Mix it up – children will get bored eating the same thing every day. Think ahead and create a weekly food plan to ensure you are covering nutritional guidelines and providing interesting food • Fruit – fresh is best but packaged fruit is fine as a second option • Sandwiches – does your child like having a lunchtime sandwich? Change the fillings regularly to include things such as meat, fresh salad, dairy and healthy spreads. Also, try using different types of bread including multigrain, sourdough, chia-infused varieties,

Victoria Government’s Better Health suggests these food safety tips: • Choose an insulated lunch box or one with a freezer pack, or include a wrapped frozen water bottle to keep the lunch box cool • Follow hygienic food preparation methods • Prepare lunches the night before and store in the fridge or freezer • Perishable foods such as dairy products, eggs and sliced meats should be kept cool and eaten within about four hours of preparation. Don’t pack these foods if just cooked.

Children’s lunch boxes should be packed with one serve from each of the five food groups: a piece of fruit, some vegetables, a tub of low fat yoghurt or some cheese, a sandwich with lean meat or egg. Water is the best drink for children. Offering a range of foods in the lunch box, and ensuring a healthy breakfast and a well-rounded dinner is the easiest way to make sure that children are meeting their recommended serves in the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Children aged between two and three should have two-and-a-half serves of vegetables and legumes daily; one serve of fruit; four serves of grains; one serve of protein and one-and-a-half serves of dairy. Children aged four to eight should eat four-and-a-half serves of vegetables and legumes; one-and-a-half serves of fruit; four grain items; one-and-a-half serves of protein and two serves of dairy for boys and one-and-a-half for girls. For children aged between nine and 11 – five vegetable and legume serves; two serves of fruit; five serves of grains for boys and four for girls; two-and-ahalf serves of protein and two-and-a-half serves of dairy for boys and three for girls. A plan to build a $4.2 million Sunshine Coast Aquatic Exercise Facility next to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Olympic-standard pool is off the blocks after receiving a State Government grant. The USC Spartans Swim Club gained a $1.4 million grant to kickstart the next phase of development. USC Professor of Sport Science Brendan Burkett says the aquatic exercise facility will enable innovative training and recovery for all athletes, along with new research to guide rehabilitation and exercise programs for the broader community.

The Friends, Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc. are showcasing the artistic talent of the Sunshine Coast in the prestigious 2016 Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize exhibition. WIN FOR ENVIRONMENT The region’s greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced significantly in the past 12 months thanks to the introduction of innovative sustainable practices at three landfill facilities. The reduction equates to removing 11,000 vehicles off the roads. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says around 55,161 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent was abated through landfill gas flaring. “The increase of landfill gas flaring by 52 per cent at these landfills is the latest in a long list of projects aimed at achieving our vision to be the most sustainable region in Australia.’’

AN AUSTRALIAN ICON SPEAKS OUT Noni Hazlehurst was recently inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame. Only the second woman to receive the honour, her speech was thoughtful and hard-hitting. She spoke with My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to her Sunshine Coast appearance in the one-woman play, Mother. By Leigh Robshaw You really struck a chord with your Logies speech, were you surprised at its impact? I was a bit overwhelmed. I felt it was a risk – it could have brought the evening to a slow end. I think people aren’t used to seeing people talk about things from the heart on television, certainly not at any length. I was pleased to be given that opportunity and wanted it to be meaningful to me. It did resonate for a lot of people. I wrote it at nine o’clock on the morning of the Logies and had to be at rehearsal at 11. Anything like that is a risk, anyone who sticks their heads above the parapet risks being torn down in these days. You made a quip about almost being too old to play yourself – do you see that paradigm changing any time soon? I do see it shifting and I think it’s fantastic that the last gasps of capitalism – trying to make women powerless by insisting they only focus on the size of their bum or the height of their heels and focusing on vapid celebrities – I do think there’s a backlash against that.

Do you think Australia’s obsession with sport overshadows the arts in Australia? I’ve got nothing against sport but I do think the arts are an essential part of a well-rounded life. The studies have been done, we know the benefits of the arts, whether it’s children, prisoners, people who are depressed. We know the arts have value; all the talk of innovation, that’s OK as long as it’s not being innovative in the arts. Internationally we’re seen as great contributors to the arts, but then you see the rapidly shrinking arts budgets and particularly people in regional areas suffering. Every medal we won at the Olympics cost us $20 million and it

Does the massive following of celebrities like the Kardashians bother you? It distresses me. The things being written about these women have nothing to do with their achievements. When you conflate actors with celebrities, what you’re suggesting is the only thing interesting about these celebs is the way they look. We don’t talk about the work they do or what they’ve achieved, we talk about how they look. It’s very distressing. Women are having these women as role models who are famous for doing absolutely nothing rather than indulge themselves. There’s nothing wrong with fashion and wanting to look good, but there are other things in life. It cripples young women if they think that’s what’s important.

doesn’t have a trickle-down effect the way the arts do. Winning a bronze in an obscure sport doesn’t create a movement in sport, yet money invested in the arts has untold returns. The problem with the arts is a lot of the benefits are intangible – they help make life work living, but how do you measure that? If everything has to have a commercial value, everything is measured on return on investment, how do you quantify a life changing in response to the arts? The arts provide peace and respite from the noise and clamour. There are so many column inches devoted to sport, half the time the arts don’t have a page in the papers, it’s an entertainment page or a gossip page. You live in the Gold Coast hinterland, do you miss anything about the city? I’m working in a city more than I’m at home but I’ve been in Queensland for 15 years and my city phase is well and truly over. I feel like a rat on a treadmill in the city. The urban treadmill is out of control, pulling things down to create more units. I find nature really important in my life. Again, studies have been done to say if you’re exposed to greenery and things growing, you have more peace of mind.

You’re coming to the Coast for your play Mother. Is it the first time you’ve performed in a one-woman play? Yes – I really love it. I love the challenge of leaping into the void every night and seeing what we can do with the audience. Every night is different. I just love taking audiences on a journey. It has these light moments but incredibly intense moments. My job is to focus the audience’s attention, you’re fighting lolly wrappers, fighting phones, you have a very fragile hold on the audience. People think actors get lost in the role – they don’t. If I hear a cough, I think is that a prolonged cough? Did it go over an important line? You’re totally in tune with what’s going on. I’m not just there prancing about emotionally, I’m actually taking the audience on a journey, that’s part of the deal, to be in tune with the audience. You’re also offering an acting masterclass for Sunshine Coast actors. Do your students get starstruck? That lasts about five minutes. They soon realise there’s nothing to be starstruck about me. I’m no different to everybody else. I just happen to be in the public eye. I’m just a 63-year-old mum, just like a lot of people.

STUDY: GIRLS GETTING RAW DEAL The survey of 600 girls aged 15 to 19, commissioned by women’s anti-violence group Our Watch and child rights’ agency Plan International Australia, found just eight per cent feel they are always treated the same as their male counterparts and a third think it would be easier to land their dream job if they were a man. The findings were included in a report about sexism, which also suggested initiatives for the equal representation of young women in Australia including direct consultation and investment in their education, safety, sexual health and relationship requirements. AIHW spokesman Tim Beard says the results suggest strategies such as increasing the price of alcohol and restricting trading hours have had a positive outcome in reducing the overall consumption levels of alcohol. In 2013–2014, the amount of alcohol consumed per person was 9.7 litres, down from 10.8 litres in 2008–09.

s Cynthia places the towering plate of nachos in front of me – onehandedly, no less, a dip of the table signals just how big a challenge this is going to be. Dripping with molten cheese, my nachos look like a mountain of gold. And that’s just the entree. Half an hour later, Cynthia comes to

check on me. “You didn’t warn me,” I manage. There’s still half a mountain to go. “You look like you’re doin’ just fine, honey,” she laughs. Before I can determine if that was a subtle insult, the main course arrives – a burrito. My jaw drops, and not because I’m still

hungry. How did they deliver this without a truck? Santa Fe wears its history proudly and colourfully – it looks like the natural evolution of an Old West town you see in the movies. I had expected New Mexico’s capital to be just another city of glass and steel. So imagine my surprise when I discover ‘the Santa Fe style’. The city’s buildings all feature Pueblo adobe-style architecture, making it look as if Santa Fe has been sculpted rather than built. Over the centuries, the territory that includes Santa Fe has been part of New Spain and Mexico. It then enjoyed a rare run of independence before finally ending up as part of the US – originally as a part of Texas. It wasn’t until 1912 that New Mexico became a state. Today, Santa Fe is a city of the arts, and one that strives to stand apart from other cities. Art galleries are everywhere; it’s hard to turn a corner without walking into another boutique gallery, with no two styles the same. The heavy grey storm clouds, which have followed me all day, cast a shadow over Santa Fe’s adobe-like buildings, and as the rain begins to fall it stains them heavily. It’s a remarkable sight. As an Australian, I feel like a total alien – more so than in any other American city I’ve visited. I’m heading up the main street when the clouds part and let the sun through. And a powerful sun it is. The light hits downtown’s Saint Francis Cathedral full force, and suddenly the secret brilliance of Santa Fe style is revealed. It looks like a mountain of gold.

arkets have been unsettled in the recent weeks by concerns of a shift in central bank rhetoric regarding interest rates, which in turn has seen bond yields rise. There’s no denying that markets are highly sensitive to what happens with rates given the significant expansion in multiples that has occurred against a backdrop of low interest rates and modest earnings growth. However, fears that the extended period of low interest rates will unravel, appears overstated given a pick-up in growth is still far from assured. On the other hand, markets had become too complacent on the risks and market valuations, particularly in Australia were stretched, so a correction was necessary. We continue to see the ASX200 oscillating between these periods of fear and complacency – which will keep the index range-bound, in our view. There’s still reasonable prospects central banks will aim to keep monetary policy accommodative. We believe that central banks in Europe, UK, Japan, Australia and China have scope to cut rates further should either growth or inflation disappoint. While the US Federal Reserve is on a path to raising rates, we don’t sense any urgency for them to do so until later this year. Even though this may cause some initial instabilities in the market, we have found, based on more recent Federal tightening cycles, equity investors can look through this. The communication by the US Federal Reserve around the future path of rate rises will also be important in how equities respond. However, if we are wrong, and bond

yields continue to escalate, then it may be too simplistic to assume the pain will only be felt by the bond sensitive sectors (like real estate investment trusts, telecoms and utilities). Cyclical sectors (like banks, materials and energy), will be caught up just as much in any market rout given higher interest rates are likely to heighten fears around global growth as well. We continue to see markets oscillating between periods of fear and complacency – which in our view, will keep the ASX200 index mainly within a range of 4900 to 5600. On the one hand, the upside is being limited by the range of risks in the market today around global growth and company earnings, and complacency becoming reflected in stretched valuations. Without stronger earnings growth, our market will fail to sustain a rally much beyond 16 times earnings at 5500 with the market having tested, and fallen from these levels a number of times since the global financial crisis. On the other hand, the downside can be curbed given our expectation that rates will stay low for longer, creating a lack of investment alternatives. We see better value as the index approaches 4900 – given the multiple will compress towards a more reasonable 14.5x earnings and the dividend yield on the ASX200 approaches five per cent. RETAIL LOOKING STRONG A solid rise in retail sales in August could be a signal that a slump in consumption growth is only temporary, economists say. Retail spending rose 0.4 per cent in August to $25.1 billion, better than market expectations of a 0.2 per cent rise. Department stores were the best performing sector of the retail industry, where sales leapt 3.5 per cent, while there was a 1.2 per cent lift in the value of cafe, restaurant and takeaway food sales. WEDDINGS GONE WILD

am thanking my lucky stars I am married. Not because I somehow tricked a genuinely nice and good looking bloke into marrying a spendaholic who cannot cook and is more than a little high maintenance. Nope. I am glad I am hitched because these days it is so expensive to say “I do”. Bride To Be magazine has stated the average price of a wedding in Australia is $66,000. I find this figure staggering. That is a lot of confetti. Of course no one has confetti anymore. That is so 2001. Nowadays everyone wants big brash ring bling, invitations printed on the finest linen, Jimmy Choos on their pedicured feet, flowers worth a house deposit, hipster photography sessions and deconstructed miniature beetroots served on fancy white plates. Five years ago, the average price of a wedding was $36,000. So what has happened? Apparently we want bigger and brighter and more extravagant than ever before. I blame Instagram. We all see how the other half are living and it plants expensive little seeds in our greedy minds. Kim Kardashian’s wedding to that basketball fellow just about broke the internet as the world hungrily consumed images of her over-the-top nuptials. Personally, I am bang up for a wedding,

so much so that I married the same bloke twice. Our first ceremony was an intimate affair in Tasmania with cold champagne and salty oysters on a rocky sea cliff. The second wedding was a Great Gatsby themed circus with 250 guests including a human dressed as a fairy swinging in a beautiful old tree in Buderim. We had 14 dogs in the wedding party. They were all dressed in theme, of course. We had croquet, a kissing cave, fireworks and the cake – it was a seven-tiered masterpiece of whimsy. But our bill was nowhere near $66,000. And who is paying for these weddings? I think the majority of couples no longer expect their parents to pay for the entire wedding. Another survey shows that on average, a couple has 100 guests at their wedding. So is it money well spent for memories of the best day of your life, or is it simply flushing cash down the drain? We only live once, so I say have the wedding but with compromises, so you are not starting this new chapter together poor and stressed. That is hardly wedded bliss. But it seems in true Aussie fashion we all agree on one thing where there can be no compromise: the honeymoon. Ninety-two per cent of newlyweds head off somewhere to seal the deal with a holiday.

n a recent weekend newspaper a group of economists were pretending to be Treasurer for a day, outlining their remedies for our national budget and debt problems. I’m guessing you haven’t the time or inclination to ponder Australia’s economic position. As a closet policy maker (in my dreams) I thought I would have a shot at this exercise. How hard can it be? You may also think this isn’t relevant to the Sunshine Coast. However, with our more cyclical economy, and the fact that downturns typically impact regional areas more than the capital cities, we have a pretty big interest in this. What I wouldn’t do is pander to party politics. Compromise upon compromise delivers ineffective medicine to a dying patient. I wouldn’t make up policy in thought bubbles. Lazy governing equals lazy results. I would avoid looking short term. Our debt legacy will take time to correct. I would start with principles. Yep, principles. These would include fiscal policies that are, in equal measure: genuine, fair, incentive-led, deliverable. Given budgets have both revenue and expenditure components, I would start with how can we get more people working, paying tax and contributing. In this category I would do five things: increase the GST to 12.5 per cent (this might make my imaginary re-election unlikely), reduce company tax to generate employment, look at workforce

participation policies to get the young and the mature back contributing fully, close the gaps for overseas companies in relation to tax, and bring forward major infrastructure programs to generate jobs. By incentivising productive work, we can share the burden of tax and deliver social benefits. The flipside of the equation is government expenditure. This is much harder, because the no-pain, no-gain pill is difficult to both sell and swallow. I would start by rightsizing all levels of government

I would address unproductive middle class welfare and means test many of the health care services we all lean on. I would more closely evaluate all claims for employment related welfare and re-introduce national service for those needing skills and an occupation. A pretty simple plan – a bit of carrot and a bit of stick – but it might be time for me to move to other dreams. Now, where is Eddie Vedder’s number? I’m sure he needs a new drummer.

Once real estate and tourism interests agreed they needed a common identity, the next problem was what to call the collection of coastal settlements between Caloundra and Noosa. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

ntil the name Sunshine Coast became official in the Government Gazette of August 1, 1967, the scattered collection of seaside towns that stretched across three shires and around 60km of coastline had been known by various hit and miss names. First there were just three local authorities. Most of them hinterland-based - Caloundra in Landsborough, Maroochy in Nambour and Noosa in Pomona - as that was where the resources were: timber and sawmills, orchards and canefields, a sugar mill and the railway line. Collectively they were referred to as the Near North Coast, with reference to its proximity to Brisbane. Tourism was an industry of the future – until the 1960s. In the late 1950s, a group of real estate investors, backed by the new local branch of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, began putting together a proposition for a united front to create a product image. The coastal strip needed something with real appeal and the obvious choice was Suncoast. It had the support of Noosa’s Peter Sharpe, a founding

father of the Sunshine Coast as a destination, who led the early push for a single identity. He surmised, correctly as history has occasionally found, that “Sunshine” Coast would have everyone who arrived on a rainy day making smart comments about the weather. Alas, a development company headed by Rex Testro of Melbourne had beaten them to the mark. His Suncoast Developments had acquired the leases to all land between Coolum and Mudjimba – and the rights to the name – at least five years earlier. No doubt inspired by the success of the Gold Coast, which in October 1958 was renamed from the South Coast, other suggestions flowed. All had the same theme of being a precious resource – not gold, how about the Silver Coast? Or, it’s a gem, let’s call it “Diamond Coast”? All were dismissed and the Sunshine Coast it would be – although there would be many more hurdles to be overcome before it would drop comfortably into the vernacular. It wasn’t all that long ago that Suncoast outpolled Sunshine Coast in the telephone directory and, much to the chagrin of tourism promoters, almost as many businesses still traded as North Coast. Today, almost half a century later, Sunshine Coast is the clear winner. Love it or hate it, the name stuck and is now affectionately abbreviated to simply the Coast and just as often, the friendly and familiar Sunny Coast.

The great toll road battle came up in parliament in October 1989, the month the Maroochydore bypass section of the Sunshine Motorway opened. Main Roads Minister David Hamill accused the Tollbusters group of “peddling the lie” that the Government was forcing motorists to use the new Sunshine Motorway. In his denial, he said “no-one has to use the Sunshine Motorway, and only those people who choose to use the road have to pay for it”. After a long campaign, tolls were finally lifted at midnight on March 8, 1996.

The hosting of the Games here on the Sunshine Coast allows us to highlight the outstanding work our police and emergency services workers and volunteers perform every day. They are a cherished part of our community. Without them, we wouldn’t enjoy the very enviable lifestyle that we have today.

My folks are visiting from Perth and my mum said the other day, “Your father and I have been thinking we’d like another child.” I was like, “That’s awesome, sure I’m 41 now but I’ve always wanted a sibling.” Then Mum was all, “Yeah that’s not what I meant.” You see I’ve always been my parents’ only child, their adopted only child, but even then I knew I wasn’t their favourite. Mum and Dad’s favourite was the fat kid from Hey Dad. “Funny little bugger that one…” my dad John used to say. never been prouder. Anyway, as if parental rejection wasn’t a bad enough way to start the week, the local lifeguard dude at the pool yelled at me for peeing in the pool. He yelled so loud it startled me and I nearly fell in the pool. Having said that, one thing’s for sure everybody, when the chips are down you can always count on me because I love chips. One of my favourite hot chip dishes is what I call the Benedict Cumberchip. It’s essentially eggs benedict in all its sultry buttery hollandaise with crispy ham and egg glory, served on a bed of hot chips. It’s the perfect afternoon dee-light. You’re welcome. I’ve re-read the above bollocks and I’m trying desperately to avoid mentioning the stupid US presidential election that everybody’s talking about. How long has this been going on? Seriously who’s directing the election, Baz Luhrmann? When will it end? On the upside, those presidential debates have been hilarious and a fun game to play while they’re on is the Trump Sniff and Skull. The Don averages 21 sniffs per minute in an hour-long debate, almost as many sniffs as Robert Downey Jnr averaged in the ‘90s. If you’re planning on a round of Trump Sniff and Skull this weekend, might I

recommend a low alcohol frothy one. The world famous master brewers at Heineken have done something I never thought would be successful, let alone needed in the world – a lower calorie, low carb, mid-strength version of one of the greatest beers in the galaxy. PARTLY CUTE, PARTLY A HOOT Good things can come in tiny packages, and this little Italian firecracker is proof. By Peter Atkinson

iche markets don’t come much smaller than this. Literally. The appetite for high-performance, micro-sized city cars must surely be as minuscule as

the cars themselves. So finding yourself behind the wheel of a Fiat 500 Bambino with 103 kilowatts beneath the bonnet is a rare opportunity. So rare, in fact, that the car isn’t even

built by Fiat – instead it arrives in Australia via Italian performance house Abarth. So, why are we even driving this machine, known as the Abarth 595? Well, because it’s a Fiat 500 with 103

kilowatts beneath the bonnet, I suppose. That might not sound like a particularly awesome power output. But considering it’s tasked with pushing around a car not much bigger than a basketball shoe, the results are impressive. This is not our first time testing an Abarth-tuned Fiat Bambino. Our previous experience a couple of years back left us comparing the car to Chuckie – that sweet-faced doll with an evil streak. That one – known as the Esseesse - was even more potent – with 118 turbocharged kilowatts and a zero to 100km/h sprint of about seven seconds. This new model, the 595, sits somewhere between that more potent version and the standard 500 – and with a pricetag of $27,500 it represents the new “entry point” for Abarth in the Australian market. The Abarth brand is to Fiat what AMG is to Mercedes-Benz, or HSV is to Holden – a specialist tuning house that works in tandem with the parent company to deliver performance-enhanced variant. It’s a brand worth watching – we’re told that in the not-too-distant future they’ll be bringing another model to the Aussie market – the Abarth 124 Spider, based on the latest Mazda MX-5 but wearing a Fiat badge – which promises to be quite a thing. Abarth – founded about 60 years ago

MOTORING and with a Scorpion as its logo – describes its cars as “small but wicked”, which pretty much sums them up. To be honest, the 595 is probably a car that only the Italians could get away with. Try to pimp up a Toyota Yaris or Nissan Micra in the same way and you’d most likely get laughed out of the joint – but somehow the Italians manage to keep a straight face about this angry little Bambino. It’s partly cute – and partly a hoot – and is an easy car to enjoy with its responsive performance, razor-sharp handling and surprising driveability. The chassis is stiff but the ride is still reasonably compliant. It scoots around corners adeptly but doesn’t crash unnecessarily over road imperfections. The 595 uses a five-speed manual transmission, rather than more customary six-speeder found in most vehicles like this. But the ratios are well-spaced and seem to keep the engine in its sweet spot most of the time. Small, revvy engines like this tend to be a bit temperamental and easily stalled. That’s not the case with the Abarth which has a nice, progressive clutch and is relatively easy to drive in stop-start situations. That probably fits well with its target market – which falls somewhere just short of the hard-core buyers who’ll be attracted to the fully-fledged Abarth model

we’ve driven previously. Despite its minute size, it has a sturdy, assured road presence. In fact you sometimes have to remind yourself what a tiny car this is. The cockpit is barely bigger than a shower cubicle yet it can, at a pinch, squeeze in four occupants – at least two of those in relative comfort. If you need to accommodate a set of golf clubs or two, it

But for someone my size, that means driving with knees bent and occasionally knocking into the dash. Hey, I guess there have to be some compromises in a car of these dimensions. Its makers have been reasonably generous with the equipment – as you

Seven airbags, reverse parking sensors and a suite of electronic handling aides keep it safe; a seven-inch TFT instrument cluster delivers the relevant information to the driver and there’s a also a turbo boost gauge. Cockpit functions are reasonably user-friendly and, it goes without saying, within easy reach. There were few complaints about this impish little machine that delivers plenty of fun for your money.

FIAT ABARTH 595 HOW BIG? Not very. Remember those dodge ‘em cars at the show? About that size, but with heaps more power.

HOW FAST? Its acceleration numbers aren’t dazzling but it feels much quicker when you’re behind the wheel. Acceleration is willing and its nimble handling and low-slung ride mean you feel like you’re going fast, even when you’re not.

HOW THIRSTY? will handle that task with the rear seats folded forward (although unfortunately they don’t fold completely flat). Yet for the most part, it works well. The exception was my difficulty in finding an ideal driving position. Because the steering wheel does not adjust for reach, it’s

might expect in a tiny car costing the best part of $30-grand. On the performance front, as well as the tweaked-up engine it enjoys bigger brakes, beefier suspension and wider tyres than a standard 500 – as well as a sports exhaust that delivers a pleasing engine note.

For a tiny machine with a 1.4-litre engine, its thirst 5.8L/100km is nothing to write home about – although in day to day running you’ll hardly blow your budget.

HOW MUCH? The standard hardtop version is $27,500 plus onroad costs – or for an additional $4000 there’s a convertible model with a sliding soft-top roof.

What was the first property you sold? There was a Burnside owner who did not want to have a sign and all I wanted was my name on my first listing. Eventually, I convinced the seller and the day I banged in the sign, we had an enquiry and it sold. What was your most recent sale? It was a property at 65 Reids Road in Woombye. It was an auction campaign with four registered bidders and 40 inspections in three weeks. It passed in at $1.26 million and sold later that week for $1.28 million. What do you love the most about your job? Connectivity and achieving great results. What is the most difficult thing about your job? Seller’s expectations.

What’s best – auction or private treaty? It depends on the property. How have you seen the property market change in the past 12 months? Buyer enquiry is great. How will it change in the next 12 months? I think the steady and realistic sellers will get great results.

While we have been having a dry spell of late I saw some pictures of Stradbroke Island last week with pumping 3 to 4ft peelers. To think I nearly forgot about how good it can be. This weekend is bitter sweet – increased swell with onshore conditions. Yippee, says no one ever. As I write this, I’m not sure if Tyler Wright is the new world champ as competition was postponed. Full credit to the quality of surfing by the ladies. Almost makes you want to give up – almost. In the meantime, watch Alec Baldwin’s impersonation of Donald Trump. It might give you a laugh and take your mind off the bad surf.

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack are showing up on the high tides with Eudlo, Petrie and Coolum Creeks returning quality fish on live bait and rattling lures. Flathead up to 85cm on the drift past the cod hole area jigging plastics. Remember, flathead sized over 75cm must be returned to the water as these are breeding. You’ll find trevally and tailor around at Cotton Tree. SURF: Tailor are biting just on dusk at Pincushion with Western Australia pillies the best. Sand whiting are in the low tide gutters from Maroochy Bar to Alex. A few bream are taking pilly pieces off the Mooloolah rock walls. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the close-in reefs are working well for mixed reef fish with the lead up to the full moon bringing in the bait. Spotty mackerel are working the bait, but in the last week they have been especially shy, so anchor and berley for the best results. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is returning bass along the weed edges. Borumba Dam is also firing for bass and golden perch on either live shrimps or deep diving lures with some anglers nailing fish just as they push off from the boat ramp. Don’t forget your impoundment license.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS Our focus on frivolous events are distracting us from what’s truly incredible in our world, says Richard O’Leary.

o you think we have lost our sense of wonder? The author Tim Winton does, and I tend to agree with him. I was lucky enough to see one of Australia’s greatest authors at a talk in Maleny recently and it was this comment about our blasé attitude to the world around us that has stuck with me. I’ll give you one example of how I think we have lost our sense of awe. Have you heard of Jean-Pierre Sauvage, J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa? I hadn’t either until last week – but those three guys have just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Between them they have pioneered the development of nanomachines. These contraptions, built at the molecular level, are the world’s smallest mechanical devices – and it’s believed in the not too distant future they will revolutionise the way we live – especially

in the field of medicine. How? Well these structures are created on the scale of a nanometer which is a billionth of a metre, or to put it another way, one-thousandth the width of a strand of human hair. In fact, nanomachines are so small they can fit inside human cells and do everything from repairing damaged tissues to destroying bad cells. There are even bandages now that soak into the patient’s skin to carry out repairs on tissue caused by infection or stab wounds. And all of these advancements are due in some way to the inspirational work of these three new Nobel Prize winners. Wow – right? But it’s early days as the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which hands out the Nobel prizes, points out. “In terms of development, the molecular motor is at the same stage as the electric motor was in the 1830s, when scientists displayed various spinning cranks and

wheels, unaware that they would lead to electric trains, washing machines, fans and food processors.” Which in my opinion makes this technology even more amazing because we simply do not know where it could lead us. I think it’s fair to say the person who invented the first electric motor (probably Prussian Moritz Jacobi – but that’s not without conjecture) couldn’t possibly have dreamt of the full ramifications of their breakthrough. But we already take nanomachines for granted. How do I know? In the week the Nobel prizes were handed out were Sauvage, Stoddart and Feringa the centre of our conversations? No, most of us were too busy chatting about Kim being robbed, and the arrest of nine Aussies who bared their budgie smugglers in Malaysia.
