The result is a generation where one in four Aussie kids qualify as overweight or obese. Experts say it may be time to take a radical approach to the problem and start taxing junk food – that’s our cover story. My first job was when I was 12, landscaping and laying turf.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
After high school I did a gap year and was screened and selected to go to Sri Lanka on a youth development exchange. A bomb blew up near the offices there, so they phoned to say it was cancelled and asked if I would be interested in going to Africa. I said yes. Sometimes we just need to say yes. This was a turning point for me, because by saying yes, I would go on to spend six years in different parts of Africa doing international development work, end up working for UNICEF and really expanding my world view.
I am currently working on being the best version of myself as a high school teacher. High school has never been easy and it is good to be there for the youth.

That is a tough one. I love music and to pick one is impossible. I have been listening to the Tragically Hip a lot lately so maybe Wheat Kings, a very cool song and true story of a wrongfully convicted man. Very Canadian.
One of my favourites is Cotton Tree beside The Boat Shed, because that is where I got married and we often go there and watch the sun set. I just love it.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
“Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.” I see this as a metaphor for being true to yourself and speaking out for what you believe in, even if it is unpopular or against the grain.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? I have been on the Coast now for 11 years.
When my mother comes to visit from Canada we usually hit all the great beach spots from Noosa to Caloundra and then cruise the hinterland with a stop in Montville or Kenilworth. The scenic beauty of the Coast is not to be taken for granted.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I am with my wife at the beach taking the dog for a walk. Simple stuff, little things, every day and mundane things make me happy. We are so lucky.

THE PLANNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE COASTAL VILLAGE Sekisui House invites the community to get the information and have their say. The Yaroomba Beach site is a disused former golf course and is recognised as one of only two key, undeveloped Tourism Focus Areas on the Sunshine Coast – specifically set aside as primary locations for tourism related activities, facilities and infrastructure. Establishing a 5 Star eco-tourism resort will generate hundreds of local jobs and inject millions of tourism dollars into local businesses every year. Importantly the 5 Star eco-tourism

TACKLING OUR CHILDHOOD OBESITY EPIDEMIC Drastic action is needed to reduce Australia’s childhood obesity rates – but who bears the responsibility? WORDS: Candice Holznagel

hildhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions. One in four Australian children are now overweight or obese. The outlook for adults is no better with more than 62 per cent of Australians tipping the scales. The fact that our nation has one of the highest rates of obesity has not escaped worldwide attention. Based on data for 2011, Australia’s rate of obesity is the fourth highest among the 34 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. With 28 per cent of the population aged 15 or over overweight, we place behind the United States (37 per cent), Mexico (30 per cent) and Hungary (29 per cent). The rate of childhood obesity doubled in the 10 years between 1985 and 1995. The number of children with obesity tripled in Australia during that same period, and the statistic continues to grow. Despite school guidelines and canteens stepping up to the battleline to limit or ban foods that are considered unhealthy, waistlines are expanding thanks to the increased marketing and availability of fast food, sugar and a sedentary lifestyle

thriving on digital technology. Unfortunately, this big issue goes far deeper than beauty and aesthetics. Studies have shown that once children become obese they are more likely to stay obese into adulthood. They also have an increased risk of developing health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and
children and adults, including health system costs, productivity and carers’ costs, was estimated to be around $58 billion. Meanwhile, the Fairfax-Lateral Economics Index of Australia’s Wellbeing reports that the cost now equates to $130 billion per year. It’s weighing heavily on government

cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia – one person develops the disease every five minutes. The epidemic also has major economic impacts on society. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2008 the total annual cost of obesity for both
coffers and the call for change is so great that it prompted the formation of the Obesity Policy Coalition in 2006. The organisation, developed in conjunction with Cancer Council Victoria, Diabetes Australia, VicHealth and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention, was established with
the aim of influencing change and policy to support obesity prevention in children. The fight has moved beyond education to politics, with experts realising knowledge is not power when it comes to this growing issue. The Australian Government has continued to tackle the growing issue and this year the debate to introduce a sugar tax has gained momentum. Not surprisingly the OPC has supported the motion, reporting that a 20 per cent tax on sugary drinks could save more than 1600 lives and raise $400 million per year for much-needed obesity prevention initiatives. A 12.6 per cent reduction in consumption could result in 16,000 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes in the next 25 years, in addition to 4400 fewer cases of heart disease and 1100 fewer cases of stroke. “Australians consume large quantities of sugary drinks. In fact, sugary drinks are the largest contributor of added sugar in our diets,’’ says OPC executive manager Jane Martin. “But with 16 teaspoons of sugar in a 600ml bottle of soft drink, regular consumption is directly linked with weight myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY gain and overweight and obesity, which are risk factors for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.’’ A ‘junk food’ tax is something leading Sunshine Coast psychologist, Dr Rachael Sharman supports. The USC lecturer, who specialises in child and adolescent health behaviours and development, has conducted research that is as shocking as the obesity statistics. She says years of research shows that education is not the key to overcoming the growing health issue. “We love education. We think it’s going to be a panacea for everything and we are seeing it is a lot more complicated than that. “Obviously we are feeding children highly processed, crappy foods and of course parents are not being particularly active themselves. “We’ve been educated to death and knowing what we shouldn’t be doing, but we are doing it anyway. “The art of cooking has gone out the window… that’s part of it. I don’t think people fully appreciate the dangers of professed food and that’s where we’ve lost.” Sharman says the core factor is nutrition, not medical factors. “It’s an influx of processed foods. If you are eating processed foods you need to ask yourself why, and second of course, is our increasing sedentary lifestyle. “One thing people don’t realise is if you eat rubbish it has a direct effect on psychological function. If anything it (the issue) is going to get worse.” According to the ABS research into Australia’s eating habits, teenagers and young adults consume more soft drinks, burgers and chips than any other age group. Results from the Australian Health Survey show that on a typical day one in four teenage males consume a burger, while one in five consume chips. The rate of fruit and vegetable consumption for teenagers was low. “We need to drill down to the motivation as to why parents are feeding their children this way,’’ Sharman says. “I think we’ve done our dash and it’s
pretty obvious (education) hasn’t worked. There is a range of complex motivations. The western world is so accustomed to taking a pill and having an immediate response and being vigilant around the diet, it’s not the culture we live in. “I think we need to come back to culture – all the fast food outlets getting approved by governments and councils left, right and centre. I’m hugely in favour of a junk food tax. We have got to treat it seriously like
century,’’ O’Meara says. “Research shows that the destruction of the microbiome as a result of herbicides like Roundup and overuse of antibiotics as well as poor food choices have created dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) which in turn causes changes in metabolism, which in turn may cause obesity.” O’Meara says the key is to detox before pregnancy and to focus on good health throughout. “It has been determined that in the first six months of life a baby is imprinted as to what foods he or she will eat for the rest of their life. If you eat junk food you imprint this on the child’s survival mechanism, if you eat real foods then the imprint is for real foods. If the microbiome is in dysbiosis then the child will only want to eat white, high carb, sugar foods – it’s the bugs wanting to survive.’’

Sunshine Coast personal trainer Jamie Milne has embarked on a charity cause with a difference and has put his body on the line in the name of dementia research. The gym owner is the founder of Many Miles for Mary – an ultra-endurance charitable awareness campaign – named in honour of his grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. Milne is now running 2000 kilometres across 17 days to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Australia’s Dementia Research Foundation. Twelve community organisations have shared in $65,000 worth of grants presented by the Buderim Foundation. Now into its 13th year of operations and its ninth year of awarding grants, funds raised by the Foundation are invested and then the interest earned is distributed to community organisations serving the 4556 postcode area each year. A total of $340,000 has been awarded to groups in the nine-year history. This year’s recipients included the Hear and Say, Alzheimer’s Australia and the Buderim Community Kindergarten and Preschool Association.
LED LIGHTING TO SWEEP THE COAST The Sunshine Coast will become a pioneer for public lighting under a new master plan endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council. The Urban Lighting Master Plan will see the council become the first local government in Australia to deploy LED lighting across its entire region. Councillor Stephen Robinson says the plan supports the council’s vision to be the most sustainable region in Australia: vibrant, green and diverse. “Sunshine Coast Council’s quest to become Australia’s first local government to offset its entire electricity consumption from renewable energy is powering ahead via our Sunshine Coast Solar Farm at Valdora,” Robinson says. “The 27,000 street lights on the Sunshine Coast cost council around $4.6 million last financial year.’’

More than 500 members of the Sunshine Coast community converged on The Events Centre in Caloundra last Friday for the annual Wishlist Spring Carnival Lunch, raising more than $152,157 to buy life-saving equipment and to bring the Clown Doctors to the Sunshine Coast paediatric wards. Organising committee chairman Tim Ryan says the funds will assist in the purchase of a General Surgery Flex Focus 800 B-K Ultrasound – a vital piece of equipment to streamline surgical procedures for local cancer patients.
SECOND RESCUE HELICOPTER READY TO GO More lives will be potentially saved across Australia thanks to the work of Caloundra aviation firm Helimods, which last week completed the Emergency Medical Service fitout of a second RACQ LifeFlight rescue helicopter. LifeFlight general manager operations Brian Guthrie says the faster, high-tech AW139 helicopters Helimods’ Will Shrapnel with create real lifesaving benefits for the community. “The Sunshine Coast and LifeFlight’s Brian Guthrie Gympie regions have been well serviced by the AW139s, with 57 missions having been flown to and from the area in the past 10 months.” The Coast’s aviation and aerospace sector contributes around $124.6 million to the regional economy and provides more than 500 local jobs.

A STAR IS REBORN Former X Factor winner Altiyan Childs is drawing on deep personal pain to play the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar. Words: Leigh Robshaw

esus has returned in the form of Altiyan Childs, the captivating star who won The X Factor in 2010 and has attracted media attention with a string of personal and professional controversies that have sometimes overshadowed his undeniable charisma and musical talent. Now Childs has a chance to redeem himself, playing the role of Jesus Christ in the upcoming Sunshine Coast production of Jesus Christ Superstar, an opportunity that took him by surprise. “I was just doing my thing, I had moved to Melbourne, started a new band called The Risk and I was a few months into that. I get this email asking me if I’d be interested in playing either Judas or Jesus. I thought it was a practical joke. They wanted to meet me, have a face-to-face chat, see if I’m stable. We were all very happy with each other.” Childs has been playing guitar and singing since the age of nine and has fronted various rock bands, with a side interest in classical music. Musically, he’s comfortable singing a rock opera, but feels uneasy about playing the role of Jesus. “The whole thing is a slightly reluctant experience for me,” he says, with typical candour. “I have a deep love for the man or the character or the myth of Jesus and that’s some pretty messy sandals to walk in. I guess it’s just connected to how I feel about the world and how I’ve suffered personally. It’s not something I can take on lightly.” The son of a Croatian father and Serbian mother, Childs didn’t grow up in a Christian household, but says he formed his own relationship with God at an early age and has the Greek numerical value of Jesus, the number 3168, tattooed on his left knuckles. He also prays and reads from a 300-year-old Bible regularly. “I’m a deep lover of God,” he says. “Ever since I was really little I just felt this force, I just had this unquestionable knowledge of him, that he put us here for a distinct purpose. I spent about 10 years studying every religion, then my studies led me to Christianity. Jesus is speaking to me every day – it’s a pretty personal relationship I have with him. “I shed tears every day for the world. There’s no peace for me on this planet because there’s so much suffering and I can’t ignore it. I wish I could, I’d be further along in life. That’s okay with me, I’d rather be the way I am rather than living the good life and ignoring it all. I don’t really do happiness. My state of mind is really a state of glorious sadness. I have a hopelessly romantic relationship with the world and it makes life tough.” Childs is familiar with suffering. His father had a difficult life in the former Yugoslavia, where as a child he was
abandoned under a tree with his two-month-old baby sister, who was subsequently murdered. Altiyan and his sister Altiyana are named after the baby girl, Altijana. “My father had an extremely tough life, a sadistic father, fairly tragic circumstances. But the horror turned him into something beautiful. For every evil experience he’s had, he was determined to give his son the opposite. He’s my hero. He’s not a religious man, but when he realised I got this role, he just looked up into the sky and thought, maybe there is a God. “There are no words to convey how close we are and how much I love him. I did X Factor for him, my father on earth, and I’m doing Jesus Chris Superstar for my father in heaven.” Childs says he has no regrets about his X Factor experience, as it led him to meeting his girlfriend of three years, Samantha Greenland. He’s currently living with Greenland and two sarplaninacs (Yugoslavian wolf dogs) in a caravan at various sites around the Coast while he rehearses for the musical and plans to marry Greenland and spend time with his parents when the curtain falls on what has been a chapter of his life he’s thoroughly enjoyed, playing a role he seems born to play.

“This is a fresh company and they’re very good people,” he says. “The directors are quite beautiful. If it wasn’t for this role, being Jesus Christ, I probably wouldn’t have accepted any theatre work. One of their main criteria for hiring was a lack of ego. Not a non-existent ego, but just keeping that ego in check. I’ve found it really is a problem in this industry. The X Factor is a contrast to this. It’s a competition; no matter how nice people are to you, those fangs come out and they salivate at the idea of being a winner. Now I’m with a beautiful body of people and we all have our part to play. It’s coming together beautifully.” Gateway Theatre Productions executive producer Tracey Ferguson says Childs was always the first choice to play Jesus. “His name surfaced at our initial meeting and we weren’t prepared to budge from that,” she says. “This is a very personal role for Altiyan and his passion when he performs is incredible. Every time he opens his mouth to sing, you get goosebumps.” Childs agrees there’s something about this production, with him in the starring role, that’s meant to be. “There’s an incredible song called Gethsemane,” he says. “It’s an incredibly emotional track. I really feel like all the words are very personal and I really lived through those lyrics in my life. Just when everything around me feels broken – this has been throughout my life – there’s a door. Just as I’m crawling and I think I’m done, I see a door. That’s always been my creator saying now go this way. He’s been directing me all my life.”

However, I didn’t expect to have such close contact with my tutors and lecturers at USC. “Then, in February 2012, I gained casual work at the council through contact with its then Infrastructure Services manager Brian Peebles, who was also my tutor. a lecturer in Civil Infrastructure Design and Operation. That initial opportunity led to Keeshan winning the full-time council job when she graduated with Honours in early 2014. Her research had examined water infiltration in permeable pavement, which was part of a bigger, ongoing project by her supervisor, Associate Professor Terry Lucke, in collaboration with the council. Keeshan recalled her first lightbulb moment with Dr Lucke, who seemed to ask the right questions. “We were one week away from our exam in engineering statics, notorious as the ‘culling subject’, and Terry asked if we knew how to resolve force triangles. It was basic really, but he saw our blank faces,” she laughed. Force triangles were resolved. And Keeshan was obviously not culled.

eorgia Keeshan changed her life when she enrolled in civil engineering at USC in 2010. The then waitress from Victoria had been good at physics and maths at school and felt ready to knuckle down to study after travelling. “I had a passion for finding out how and why things work and I wanted to do a degree that guaranteed a job. I knew engineering had a range of employment and lifestyle opportunities and I listened to a talk about it at USC’s Open Day. I decided to do it,’’ she recalled. Keeshan is now a coastal engineer with Sunshine Coast Council, the local government authority serving a population of 285,000 and managing an area of 2291 square kilometres from Eumundi in the north to Beerburrum in the south. She works indoors and outdoors, contributing to the sustainable growth of the region she loves, coordinating projects and inspections of council infrastructure involving revetment walls, beach groynes, canal dredging, locks, weirs and sea walls. “As my work is usually in the tidal zone, where construction and maintenance are subject to approvals, I’m liaising with state and federal governmental agencies, council departments, community groups, customers and external contractors,” she said. “I’m exposed to a variety of jobs, such as the maintenance of the Cotton Tree sandbag groyne at the Maroochy River mouth to make the beach nice and help protect the caravan park (from erosion). ell, love has been all around of late. Not romantic love to inspire us and sweep us off our feet, but ugly love blowing up and unsettling me with the reminder that ‘happily ever after’ is something you have to work really hard at. First there was the shock that Richie picked Alex and left Nikki standing there on The Bachelor. The lady in red may have looked fabulous, but we could all see the exact moment her heart was cracked in two. Heartache. It really does suck. I sat there stunned, watching as I ate my chocolate rocky road ice-cream on our lounge with the soundtrack playing in my head to Poison’s unofficial anthem, Every Rose Has A Thorn. As Nikki stoically made her way to the black limo in slow motion with tears welling in her eyes the lyrics continued to blast in my mind: “Instead of making love, we both made our separate ways”. I was also sad and shocked to read about Wayne Bennett’s split from his wife of 42 years. I believe in that saying, no one knows what goes on in a relationship except the two people in the relationship. But to leave the marriage after 42 years to be with someone else is what I found intriguing and discombobulating. It staggers me that after four decades and three children, that you can imagine life without that person. Add to that equation two kids with special needs and it adds to the confusion,
because you form a special bond as a couple when one of your children has special needs. And then the news broke when I was already feeling fragile about Mel Gibson fathering a ninth child to a young lady who could be my child. Come on Mel. So I was feeling a bit disenchanted and my beautiful husband came to the rescue. To celebrate the start of school holidays, he bought me a bottle of champagne and the most unusual of romantic presents: a trifecta of condiments. Yes, he bought me a bottle of tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and sweet

I mean, there is not much barbecue sauce cannot fix. Perhaps I should post a bottle to Nikki from The Bachelor. I guess none of us know the hurdles life is going to pop up in front of us when it comes to matters of our hearts. So let’s finish with hope that love can conquer all. I cannot sum it up better than a great poet: “Cos even when I dream of you, the sweetest dream will never do.” Yep. Rock band Aerosmith. Amen to that.

If it can be packaged and sold, we want as much as we can lay our grasping mitts on. From that very moment when, as children, we learned to identify ourselves, there seems an almost natural tendency for us to put our hand out. Even with our last breath, we yearn for another. Of course there’s an irony to this. We devote our lives trying to gather more of everything while at the same time frittering away the one thing we can never accumulate – our time on this planet. Every minute of every day, we have less time to spend with our ever increasing pile of hopes, needs and wants. And from that moment when we know our own name, we are the unwitting recipients of an incessant barrage of promotion. All of which is designed with a twofold purpose. Firstly, to encourage us to feel just that little bit dissatisfied with ourselves, or our lot. Then, by miracle of miracles, to present us with the very tool we need to scratch the itch we were just given. It is remarkably effective. From cradle to grave, we are educated to believe in an interminable need for things (most of which didn’t even exist a decade ago).
Overlaying all this is a constant stream of ‘information’ from, and about, those folk who have ‘made it’ in life. Icons, into which we can all, if we just try harder, magically transform ourselves. If I do this, I will get that and then I’ll be happy. And all the while, no matter what we do, it is never quite enough. Even our icons plainly suffer the day-to-day travails of mere humanity. Celebrity divorce anyone? Statistics (yes, those damned lies) regularly show that despite the fact we have never had more as a society, we

onic Healthcare is an international medical diagnostics company, offering laboratory medicine, pathology and radiology services to the medical community. It also conducts a number of smaller complementary businesses with a focus on the medical centre and occupational health businesses of Sonic’s subsidiary Independent Practitioner Network. Sonic provides its services in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. Sonic Healthcare’s 2016 financial year result met guidance with 20 per cent growth in operating earnings reflecting operational improvement – a relatively weak comparative number (especially in the United States) and supportive currency impact in equal measures. After facing regulatory and funding pressures and operational issues across major markets in 2015, Sonic has entered a period of relative stability. The domestic funding and regulatory environment remains uncertain, but we believe the risk is to the upside for the first time in many years. The pre-election agreement struck by the government and the pathology industry lays out a path to a more sustainable domestic industry. While the implementation will likely be challenging, we are confident that unilateral funding cuts are off the table unless accompanied by collection centre reforms. An unchanged environment is most likely in FY17, but we see upside risk if
collection centre reforms are implemented. Historically Sonic has delivered margin expansion and healthy earnings growth during periods of stable funding. The recovery in the United States business and the continued strength of the group’s European operations highlight the appeal of the group’s internationally diversified portfolio. Sonic Healthcare now earns the majority of its revenue offshore, with the international pathology business accounting for 59 per cent of 2016 revenue. Acquisitions, market share gains and favourable currency gains have underpinned the performance of the overseas pathology business. The weakening of the Australian dollar against other international revenue currencies has been a tailwind to the business during the past three financial periods. Around one-third of the 20 per cent growth in operating earnings in 2016 was due to currency movements. Our currency forecasts support further benefits in 2017. The potential for accretive acquisitions offers additional support for our positive view. With a war chest of around $600 million we believe Sonic is well positioned to take advantage of mergers and acquisition opportunities as they arise.

TOWN WITH A STORY TO TELL
Drive north from LA and you’ll reach Cholame, a town with one big claim to fame.
A
n eerie feeling strikes me as I clip along the long, lonely two-lane blacktop westbound toward Cholame, California. There’s no reason for it – just a sudden sense of unease. I’m currently on my way from Las Vegas to San Francisco. It’s a pretty straightforward and nondescript series of highways and national routes offering little in the way of visual stimulation, unless you’re a wheat enthusiast. That’s why it’s strange when I see a huge standee of a ‘50s greaser pointing to a petrol station in the middle of nowhere. He’s sporting a petulant smirk, and radiates an easy cool in his leather jacket and Levis 501s. There’s some text beside him, but I’m going too fast to read it. It’s a reminder that I’d better slow down. A few dozen wheat fields later comes another, more immediate reminder: a set of traffic lights. Give me a break. There’s nothing around. I’m literally miles from nowhere. It’s a 55mph highway, but I’m stopped at a red light. My impatient eyes drift to the big green sign beside the angry red eye that’s brought us to a standstill. James Dean Memorial Junction. Suddenly, it all makes sense. It’s been more than six decades since Dean, a rising Hollywood star, crashed his
cursed Porsche 550 Spyder and died aged just 24. Go and have a look at any picture of Dean. Does he look 24? They lived large back then, and nowhere did James Dean live larger than behind the wheel. An avid auto racer, Dean competed in professional racing events around California in the months before his death. Cholame, more the sound of a throat being cleared than a town, was meant to be just another cluster of lights in his rear view mirror on his way to victory. Instead, he made it immortal. Ooh, my soul. Once I get a green, I pull over to check out the memorial. Just past the sign, someone has collated a bunch of stuff along a fence: an American flag, some flowers, a note that reads “We love you, James”. I notice that it’s all fairly recent, and as I take another look around the desolate landscape, I get another chill. Someone’s coming out here regularly to maintain this. Further up the highway is the Jack Ranch Cafaace, which is a kind of de facto town hall for Cholame. Here, you can enjoy some damn good food and check out the bizarre tribute to Dean beneath the tree outside. In 1977, Japanese businessman and big James Dean fan Seita Ohnishi erected the

memorial, which includes a place to throw money and a plaque inscribed with the exact time of Dean’s death. I toss a five and dime onto it and head back to the car. There’s so little to Cholame that I wonder why they don’t name more things around here after the man. There’s the James Dean Memorial Tractor, the James Dean Memorial Hill, the James Dean Memorial Hay Bales. In fact, why not just rename the town James Dean? It’s easier to pronounce. I’d later learn that the traffic lights were put in to prevent the accident that claimed Dean’s life from ever happening again. That cacophony of honks I can hear in the distance are probably offered in thanks by grateful motorists.

gotta be honest, I wasn’t planning on giving any Christmas presents this year until I heard about those exploding Samsung phones. Seriously, I’ve got a list of people I’d happily gift those to. Number one would be the lady who keeps sending messages telling me how much she hates my radio show. Look everyone’s entitled to an opinion but this lady just goes on and on. If I’d wanted her opinion all the time, I would have married her. Apart from the fact she’s right (the show IS rubbish, you’ll get no arguments from me, I’m just hanging in there hoping my bosses haven’t noticed yet), I’m sure at some stage down the track she’ll be sorry for all the mean, awful

and accurate things she’s said. Fact is, opinions are just like orgasms – my wife’s is the only one that matters to me and I don’t care if this other lady has one or not. Another bloke keeps telling me I’m gay on the telly. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, because most gay fellas I know are very good looking, smart, funny and are exceptionally snazzy dressers. To me, it’s a compliment. Having said that, I’m not a gay man. In fact, I’m straighter than the pole this bloke’s mum dances on. Another fan of the show reckons I’m a complete d&%head. Sadly, this is inaccurate too. I’m not a complete d&%head, there’s definitely some parts missing. Then there’s the crew who when you’re out and about doing the radio show at a carpark sale for fridges, drive past yelling “Triple JJJ rules”. I’m never sure what these cool cats are hoping to achieve, it’s not like I walk past Big W and yell at the store greeter, “Kmart Rules”. Other classic messages I’ve received via social media are genuinely some of the best insults of all time. In the past I’ve been referred to as “the skid mark on the underpants of modern radio”. Then there was the awesome “please refrain from singing on the radio, you sound like an old lady being eaten by a shark”. Anyways, while all this has been going on I’ve managed to Google ‘who gives a rats?’ and funnily enough my name isn’t in the search results. It’s great people have opinions about stuff, I know I do. But as we all know in life, it only takes one person to ruin it for everyone right? My advice: be that person. Now onto matters of much greater importance. Beer.
This week we are tucking into a little something new from the Matilda Bay crew. The latest addition to their now world famous Yak family is the Wild Yak Pacific Ale. Now naturally in our Aussie craft beer market we all associate the words ‘Pacific Ale’ with the Byron Bay beer masters from Stone & Wood. But while it’s not quite as ace as the S&W Pac Ale, the Wild Yak is a pretty close second. The use of signature Galaxy and Melba hops creates a big fresh and fruity aroma matched with a fairly smooth, refreshing taste that while it’s easy to drink, probably doesn’t quite match the big excitement of my initial impression. I was expecting more of a flavour punch from the beer itself, but that said, it’s still tops and will easily become a summer favourite. Modelled on a classic American Pale Ale with a passionfruity vibe that seems to be the trend at the moment, the Wild Yak could potentially become a big ticket item for Matilda Bay and leapfrog the very average Lazy Yak to stand tall at the top of the Yak clan with its big brother the Fat Yak. My advice, give it a crack and unleash the tropical beast that is the Wild Yak this weekend. I give the Matilda Bay Wild Yak Pacific Ale 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

wo-door Mercedes-Benz. Surely the most alluring set of hyphenated words in the English language. They conjure up images of iconic cars like the famous Benz SL Gullwing or those big, elegant S-Class
coupes of the 80s and 90s. Somehow, though, two-door machines wearing the famous three-point star have always seemed out of reach – the kind of cars driven only by movie stars, corporate bankers and professional sportsmen.
But times have changed in that rarefied Mercedes-Benz world. You no longer need to have a six-figure bank account or a medical degree to get behind the wheel of a two-door Benz. These days, it’s a privilege that won’t cost
you more than a premium family sedan – give or take a few grand. Benz’s latest two-door, the gorgeous looking C-Class coupe, can be secured for a spend of roughly $65,000. That doesn’t make it quite an everyday machine – but it’s one that is within the reach of a fast-growing market of aspirational owners. Not surprisingly, they’re snapping up this C-Class coupe in rapid time – as they have with its allconquering four-door sibling. While it might lack some of the spacious luxury of two-door Benzes from the past, it still has the required components – two doors, four seats and that famous threepointed star on the bonnet. The C-Class sedan, upon which this car is based, could scarcely have garnered more praise in the two years since its launch – just about every award imaginable. The coupe retains virtually all of those traits (except for back-seat accessibility, of course) and adds some virtues of its own. For a start it’s beautifully designed – featuring perfect proportions, elegant lines and the most pert of rear ends – and it’s very clearly a coupe by birth, rather than a converted sedan. MOTORING stonking C63 AMG – with a twin-turbo V8 and a 0-100km/h sprint of 3.9 seconds – at the top of the tree. That car will cost you almost three times the price of the entry-level model – with almost three times the power. That’s a car that takes the two-door Mercedes-Benz to an entirely new place.
<from previous page seats and, with more moving parts, must surely cost more to make. But coupe buyers are invariably happy to pay a premium and, looking at this car, it’s no wonder. Boy, is it pretty. The coupe is bigger than the model it replaces – about 95mm longer and 40mm wider, meaning more space inside that beautiful cockpit. Even at entry level it’s well equipped including AMG trim and wheels, automated seat-belt feeders, integrated sports seats with memory function and a 360-degree parking camera. You’ll also enjoy satellite navigation, digital DAB radio with premium speakers plus an active park assist – and on the safety side, nine airbags and radar cruise control with autonomous braking. That’s quite a package for a car costing less than $70 grand. We tested the coupe in its most basic form – the entry-level C200 with its 135kW, 300Nm, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Lesser-powered versions like this one sometimes tend to be more show than go – but the C200 didn’t disappoint. Its power numbers might sound modest for a substantial car but, in reality, it’s still an impressively sharp and engaging device. Acceleration is particularly smart in the mid-range, where it’s surprisingly torquey

HOW FAST? and, as it gathers pace, the engine spins willingly with a rorty exhaust note. Its compliant ride characteristics don’t detract from its sturdy, sure-footed handling, with taut, direct steering and impressive balance when asked to change direction quickly. Not quite as sporty as it looks, but certainly capable of pleasing those who will typically buy this machine. Anyway, most buyers will be less worried about going fast – rather, they’ll be cruising
past slowly enough so that everybody gets a good look at who’s behind the wheel. The C200 makes do with Benz’s outgoing seven-speed auto – models further up the family tree get an all-new 9G-Tronic nine-speeder that improves performance and fuel efficiency. The range stretches from the base-model C200 to a frugal C250D turbo-diesel ($74,900), a C300 turbo petrol variant ($83,400) that squeezes 180kW out of its two-litre turbo four; topped off by the

OVERCOMING THE STRUGGLE Coping with empty nest syndrome can be a difficult thing. First National Real Estate provides some useful tips on how to adjust.

ictoria’s Better Health Channel says empty nest syndrome is a real thing. Empty nest syndrome, most simply, is a change in lifestyle and routine which occurs after a family’s children have grown up and left the ‘nest’ to live by themselves. This can leave a family with real estate, which can be impracticably large. So what are the options? Many people choose to sell the family home, which is likely to have increased significantly in value over the years, to invest the profit in a retirement unit or a smaller home. Choosing a new home of a different size is known as downsizing. Homes come with a lot of attachment and dependence. Selling your home can be an emotional time. Better Health reports that empty nest syndrome is more common in women because women “are more likely to have had the role of primary carer.” First National reports that it is recommended that empty-nesters take the time to adjust to their new circumstances, and then sell up and move to a smaller property once they have adapted.
The data indicates that 22.5 per cent of people in that category moved because they wanted to downsize, far outstripping the seven per cent of people who wanted a bigger and better home at that stage in their life. In fact, moving to a smaller home was more common than any other reason cited for selling the family home.
TIPS FOR DOWNSIZING: • If downsizing for retirement, consider only properties with at least one downstairs bathroom so stairs don’t become a problem and force you to move again • Choose a location that is central to where your children and friends live, if possible • Check the closet and storage space in smaller residences and be sure you have enough room

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows the desire for sea change after children leave home is real. The ABS 2007-08 survey asked people in the category of ‘older households without children,’ who had recently moved house, the reason behind the move.

ESTUARY: Bream and flathead taken on plastics this week with the cod hole area near the entrance to Eudlo Creek and down to Chambers Island the perfect drift. Sea bream moving over both Mooloolah and Maroochy bars on the night high tide with herring and mullet gut for better results. SURF: A great time of the year for beach anglers with bream, tailor and dart working into holes from Pincushion to Mudjimba with some gutters deeper than usual, so jewfish and sharks have moved in. Big baits the go. OFFSHORE: Spanner crabs east of the Blinker. Close-in reefs are firing for mixed reef fish, but snapper up to five kilos are also working baits from Murphy’s to Currimundi. The top end of the Barwon Banks are also a hot spot with dawn and dusk producing quality fish on whole pillies and squid for squire, snapper and pearlies. Wide Caloundra for trag jew and pearl perch. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon for bass with kayaks and canoes able to work in close to weeded areas without spooking fish. Spinner baits and plastics work just as well as live shrimps. Lake Borumba and McDonald have been providing plenty of action for fly fishers. Saratoga are taking up the challenge with fish winning most of the battles amongst the water lilies.

FORGOTTEN FRIENDSHIPS A phone call with a dying friend reminds Richard O’Leary about the importance of keeping in touch.
I
have just got off the phone with an old mate of mine, a bloke I used to work with when I was just starting out in television news. It was a tough call. He’s recently been told he’s dying from lung cancer. It’s not a matter of if the disease will kill him, it’s a matter of when. I asked this guy, who had never smoked in his life and who was dedicated to keeping fit, the obvious questions – How? Why? “You know how some people win the lotto – the doctors told me I’ve done the opposite,” he said. Back in the day I was a reporter and he was a cameraman. For those who have never worked in those roles, it’s hard to appreciate how close you get. Two people stuck in a car for most of the day end up talking about just about everything; life, love and the meaning of it all. We were at different stages of our lives. I was quite wild (I look back at my 20s with some fondness and my fair
share of regrets). He was relatively mild, about 10 years older than me with a wife and two kids. But we always got on. Despite me pushing the limits in the pursuit of a story as I tried to prove I was tougher, harder and edgier than everyone

Someone who was confident about who he was, what he stood for. Someone whose actions I would think about when I pondered how to raise my own kids. Today was the first time I’d called him in at least a decade. It’s probably closer to two. It was like resuming a conversation from last week. What a waste to not keep in touch over all those years. Why not try and call a friend you have lost contact with for no good reason? You’ll have a lot to talk about.
